THEGARDENROUTE
O
Your one-stop guide to the country’s most spectacular region
ne of the most popular locations in southern Africa, the spectacular Garden Route stretches all the way from Mossel Bay on the Western Cape coastline to the Eastern Cape, covering a vast region of vegetation, from lagoons and lakes to golden sand beaches. One of the most magical aspects of this scenic region is its diversity, which 2
includes desert plains, subtropical wilderness, beautiful long stretches of beach and seaside towns. You can enjoy frolicking in the waves of the Indian Ocean with a pod of dolphins one morning, and within half an hour you can drive to the arid Klein Karoo to marvel at giant red rock formations, or explore ancient caves that date back centuries.
From a social perspective, the Garden Route has it all, for every type of person. Whether you’re looking for a simple camping holiday, or prefer five-star luxury, you’ll find it in this magnificent slice of paradise in the southern part of the Cape. Garden Route Style covers the most popular areas to visit, including Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn, George, Mossel Bay, the Wilderness and Knysna.

Responsible tourism The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) has three sanctuaries in The Crags, Plettenberg Bay, namely Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. SAASA takes the welfare of the animals and birds in their care very seriously and without exception. Therefore Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani all abide by very exacting standards, ensuring the
Monkeyland The first primate sanctuary of its kind in the world. Over 500 previously captive primates of 11 different species roam freely together in 12 hectares of indigenous forest. Experience gibbons, langurs, sakis, howlers, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, vervets and spider monkeys together with ring-tailed and black and white ruffed lemurs all living the high life in the trees or foraging in the undergrowth. Their experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m-long suspension bridge, which stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests. www.monkeyland.co.za 6
utmost quality of care together with promoting responsible tourism. It is not only the animals that benefit from SAASA’s approach, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani are all Fairtrade accredited which means that they also take great care of the environment and their staff. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden are the only primate and bird sanctuaries to receive this accreditation
and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary is the only apex cat sanctuary to receive it. Responsible tourism means, amongst other things, that they do not allow any human interaction with any of the animals or birds at the sanctuaries; they all live wild and free in natural environments where the only interactions that take place are with their own kind.
Birds of Eden The largest single-dome free flight aviary in the world, spanning 2.3 hectares of natural forests, streams and dams. With over a kilometre of walkways, visitors can experience the thrill of spotting almost 3,500 previously captive birds from over 200 different species flying free and living natural lives. The scenery alone warrants a visit with hundreds of different plant and tree species, plus there are giant fruit bats, golden-handed tamarins and the smallest of the antelopes, the blue duiker. Visits to Birds of Eden are selfguided and you are free to wander for as long as you wish at your own pace. Guided tours for group bookings can also be arranged on request. www.birdsofeden.co.za
Jukani Here you can experience all of the big cats; lions (white and tawny), tigers, jaguars and leopards together with cheetahs, cougars and caracals. Other apex predators include African painted dogs, hyenas, jackals and the notoriously fearless honey badger. All of the animals have been rescued from human exploitation and this includes a pair of white Bengal tigers who, without Jukani’s intervention, would surely have ended up being shot by trophy hunters. ‘Spirit’, the black leopard, has achieved significant fame having found peace at last after the trauma of living in the confines of a zoo. All of the animals at Jukani live in very large natural enclosures, each species with their own private dam or water hole and shelters that blend in with the environment. Tours are led by expert rangers and the focus is primarily on conservation education. www.jukani.co.za

MEADE CAFE Situated in a newly renovated 18th century townhouse, this charming restaurant and gift shop boasts a tranquil courtyard garden. Though it serves breakfasts all day, its delectable lunchtime harvest table takes some
beating. In fact, Meade Café has won numerous accolades, including being named as one of the Top Ten Garden Route Restaurants. The menu features fresh bistro-style dishes with a European feel. It’s often booked out for special occasions for up to 16 guests. www.meadecafe.co.za KAFE SEREFÉ A rarity in a town that has conservative culinary tastes, Kafe Serefé lends a Turkish charm to George. The word Serefé means ‘Cheers to good health’ and, since the restaurant was opened in 2005 by Carolien van Rensburg as a Turkish coffee shop (above the family’s meat retailing business), a steady stream of locals clearly agree with this sentiment. www.kafeserefe.co.za LA CAPANNINA Situated in York Street, George, this is the go-to venue for many families seeking a relaxed dining experience and some good Italian food. www.lacapanninageorge.co.za 31
