From the editor Glimpse section for this issue (pages 15 to 24). She compares the two cities and what she loves about both, and gives us a peek into her champagne lifestyle – where she goes, what she does, the products she can’t live without and her favourite floral designer on home turf. On a more serious note, our Big Read tackles the topic of MBAs, those coveted Master’s degrees that only the brave and the brilliant are prepared to tackle. We find out what’s involved in signing up, what you’re really signing up for and how this prestigious degree can set you up for the future. You’ll find the story on page 32. Our photo essay (page 38) is also on a serious note… In his evocative photographs, Graham de Lacy ponders the subject of ‘Toxic Nostalgia’. His pictures of Joburg’s mine dumps are remnants of a disappearing past, a time when gold was the basis upon which the city was built. Today they are disappearing, mostly because the dumps are hazardous to the health of those who work in them and who live nearby. Graham takes a nostalgic

look at the dumps, where he spent his childhood when he lived on the mines. In our Cool District, we tackle not one, but three different neighbourhoods that spread along what we call The Golden Triangle – Dunkeld, Hyde Park and Craighall Park. This triangle of northern suburbs is home to some of the best stores, coffee shops and restaurants in Joburg – and we tell you where to find them, starting on page 64. But that’s not all that’s in store for you. There’s London in all its glory, and Dullstroom, Durban and Cape Town closer to home. New restaurants, old favourites and Greek eateries, not necessarily in that order, followed by great teatime recipes from cookery expert Leila Saffarian and an entire warming section on rum. There are also bicycle shops, escape rooms, Haarties for kids, a look at alternative fashion in our Kulcha section and a diary section full of things to do in the winter months. Sit back, relax and enjoy. Until next time…

SINEAD MARTIN Lifestyle Journalist & Social Media Strategist Sinead has a passion for all things beauty and health, and specialises in lifestyle writing while navigating through the popular hashtags of social media (@Sinead_Martin). This issue, she delved into the world of MBAs to give the rest of us an idea of what these prestigious degrees entail.

Urban jungles abound in this issue – we’re talking Joburg, of course, but have added both cosmopolitan London and incomparable New York City to the mix. In complete contrast, we’ve included the paradise island of Medjumbe in Mozambique, the best spot to get away from any city bustle – but that’s another story altogether and you’ll find it on page 60. Then it’s back to big cities, the Big Apple in particular, which Trevor Noah now calls home. He’s our cover star this issue, and we ask him, with tears in our eyes, to stop being serious and return to the funny man we love so much. We also find out what the dog on the cover has to do with it… see page 26 for all the info. A TALE OF TWO CITIES GENEVIEVE BEYLEVELD SPENDS HALF HER LIFE IN JOBURG, AND THE OTHER IN NEW YORK. SHE TAKES US ON A ROLLER COASTER 24 HOURS IN EACH CITY

When it comes to an evening out on the town, Marble is my go-to. Right from the moment the lift doors open into this sleek nightspot, you’re surrounded by Joburg’s elite – models, actors and Springbok rugby players. Star chef David Higgs doesn’t disappoint either – from the kudu starter to mains of prawns and steak, the cuisine is delicious and the presentation even better. A great spot to have dinner with your girlfriends, followed by Instagram-worthy cocktails. Oh, and, darling, you’ll want to wear your slinkiest black dress for this one.

JOBURG BREAKFAST

The thing I miss most about Joburg when I am away is, without a doubt, Tasha’s! There is nothing better than having breakfast with friends at Tasha’s in Hyde Park (that’s where you will most likely find me when I’m in South Africa). A decaf cappuccino and scrambled eggs are my faves. Sometimes I even order them as a takeout so I can enjoy them while having a blow wave at Carlton Hair around the corner. (I take full advantage of their Blow Dry Bar because in New York a blow wave is R700!). Mid mornings are spent at Lightsculpt Aesthetics Clinic in Rosebank (it is the only place I will trust with my Dermapen, Botox or lip fillers). There is nothing more relaxing than a Dermapen facial after weeks of travelling (and it rejuvenates my skin immediately). MIDDAY

Afternoons (winter sun or scorching summer) were made for spending in Westcliff. I like to start at Princess Alice Adoption home, where I spend time playing with the babies I have missed so much while being away. After this, I often head to the Four Seasons at The Westcliff deck for another decaf cappuccino where I sit and write or reply to emails (tough life, right?). I love the views of the urban forest from the deck and long for this during the dreary New York winter days. My mani and pedi haunt is Grace Skin and Wellness in Parkmore. This pretty pink salon is my favourite place to make myself a cup 18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

PASSPORTS & PERIGNON “Never ever apologise for living an absolutely ridiculous life.” That’s Genevieve Beyleveld’s mantra on her website, and she describes her hedonistic lifestyle with so much humour and aplomb, one can’t help but forgive her for having it all. NEW YORK CITY Many people ask me if I miss home when I’m in NYC, and while I love Johannesburg, there is something oddly comforting and familiar between splitting my time between the two cities. The energy of this city is palpable and, like Joburg, the people are the heart of it all. BREAKFAST

There are plenty of fancy brunch spots that attracted the biggest celebrities in Hollywood, but this girl is all about starting her day with one of the world’s best bagels! It is no exaggeration that New York has the best bagels in the world. My favourite spot is Daily Bagel on the Upper East Side. These are the bagels dreams are made of – the perfect mound of calories and cream cheese. I stumbled across this little pit stop by accident and I’m so glad I did. Every morning I debate whether I should try a new bagel place or whether I should just head back to Daily Bagel. Let’s just say I’m a morning regular! MIDDAY

There is nothing like mid morning in New York City. My favourite thing to do in the summer is to make my way to one of the famous parks (Central Park or Bryant Park are my favourites) and read my book or catch up on emails (the parks have free Wi-Fi, so

Four Seasons The Westcliff www.fourseasons.com

“My favourite spot is Daily Bagel on the Upper East Side. These are the bagels dreams are made of” why would I bother working from an office?). After catching up on Vitamin D and emails, I would recommend going for a traditional New York minute manicure. Not only are they the fastest and best manicures imaginable, they are ridiculously cheap. EVENING

Evenings in New York are the most magical time of the day. If I only had one day in the city, I would start off by having an evening drink on a rooftop overlooking the iconic skyline. My favourite is New York’s most fabulous members-only club. This particular rooftop has views of downtown Manhattan and the Hudson River. After this, I recommend a Broadway show (because this is New York, right?). My current favourites are the Book of Mormon and Miss Saigon. If you’re lucky you might be able to secure tickets, at the price of an arm and a leg, to Broadway’s famous Hamilton. There’s a three-month waiting list, so it’s best you book in advance! End your evening with dinner at CAFÉ MEDI, located in the Lower East Side, which serves fresh and seasonal contemporary Mediterranean cuisine inspired by traditional coastal dishes of Spain, Italy and France. The expansive 20-feet high, floor-to-ceiling, colourful tile mural was designed and created by a Spanish artist who was inspired by a Peruvian myth. This is the signature décor piece and perfect for snapping selfies!

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL GENEVIEVE BEYLEVELD CHATS TO KATE ARGO, OWNER OF BLOOMFIELD BESPOKE FLOWERS, ABOUT TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH AND OPENING HER OWN BUSINESS

“Floral design is something I love doing and to do it full time is an absolute treat” Tell us about yourself and your business? I have spent the last four years working as an event and promotions manager for a lifestyle magazine as well as an editorial stylist. I initially concentrated on décor, beauty and food styling, but I began to

enjoy the gardening pages and floral styling more and more, and decided to concentrate solely on those. Moving over to work for myself as a florist was an easy decision – it’s something I love doing and to do it full time is an absolute treat.

What makes Bloomfield Bespoke Flowers stand out from the crowd? I have a definite look – very clean, very uncluttered, but still soft and feminine. I started off with a very specific rose box look, but within months other florists in Joburg started offering the

same. So, although I will still oblige if a customer requests one, I have moved over to doing arrangements and bunches using a collection of my favourite flowers. I adore dahlias and peonies, ranunculus and hydrangeas, and love orchids, anemones and tulips. I also make up a really lovely herb box, which no one else does, a magnificent alternative to an ordinary arrangement if you’re looking to spoil a foodie. Tell us about your clients… I hear many are celebrities who hire you to make their homes beautiful. I’m more than happy – hell, I’m delighted – when people acknowledge that I’ve supplied the flowers in their

GLIMPSE | INTERVIEW

businessmen – I found that very exciting. What inspires you to follow your passion? A love of cut flowers. A belief that every day is special and should include something that makes you feel

homes. But I do feel it’s up to them to decide if they want to share that information. There is one exception, however – there’s the marvelous Genevieve Beyleveld, who is generous enough to boast on her blog that her home is filled with flowers from Bloomfields!

Any amusing or unusual experiences you’ve had in your career? One of my first exciting orders was for Valentine’s Day – luxury jewellery brand Cartier ordered a number of rose boxes for their top customers. I also got asked to do flowers for a private dinner hosted by a member of HSBC for 16 incredibly successful

special – and flowers are an affordable way of doing this. Also, I’m incredibly inspired by the joy someone shows when they are given (or buy themselves) an arrangement that just takes their breath away.

“A herb box is a magnificent alternative to an ordinary arrangement if you’re looking to spoil a foodie”

ALL ABOUT KATE You’ll find Bloomfield Bespoke Flowers in Glenda’s at Hutton Court, Hyde Park. There is a limited amount of fresh arrangements daily (this isn’t an always available, 20-of-the-same kind of florist), so it’s best to order a day or two in advance if you’re looking for something in particular. Kate offers bespoke arrangements, and, on request, the increasingly popular hat boxes, including rose and orchid boxes, as well as one filled with herbs that you can replant in pots – a wonderful gift that keeps on growing. Besides being able to tuck into Glenda’s amazingly fabulous fare or a sexy cocktail after you’re all bloomed out, Bloomfield Bespoke Flowers also stocks a small, ever-changing selection of things Kate loves, such as bags from Bali and pretty pots with indoor plants, limited edition swimwear and jewellery. There’s always a new reason to pop in. 078 309 3557 | @bloomfieldbespokeflowers

WHERE+WEAR GENEVIEVE BEYLEVELD’S NEW YORK-BASED BOYFRIEND DANIEL ROSS SHARES SOME OF HIS GROOMING TIPS

1

DAVIDOFF COOL WATER MAN EAU DE TOILETTE SPRAY

This is my staple fragrance. I’ve been using it since I was in my teens and have been hooked ever since. I really like its fresh, sharp, clean scent. It’s a masculine scent with mint and green nuances, as well as coriander, lavender and rosemary. A true classic – it was first created in 1988!

2

ADIDAS ULTRA BOOST

These are my go-to standard sneakers that I wear with everything. They’re versatile, comfortable, perfect for gym, running around or even a casual date night. This is my second pair, and I’m about to order another pair from Amazon soon. Apparently they’re easily available in South Africa.

3

AXE WHATEVER MESSY LOOK PASTE

My hair was the bane of my life until Genevieve found this excellent product for me. I like it because it’s not thick and oily like many hair grooming products and it works on my hair. It’s available in the US, but if you can’t get it in South Africa, you can always order it off Amazon.

24 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

4

PAUL MITCHELL TEA TREE SPECIAL SHAMPOO

I have to admit to stealing Genevieve’s shampoo until she found this one for me. What I love about this particular shampoo is that the formula of natural tea tree oil, peppermint and lavender removes excess oil, dirt and impurities without stripping moisture.

5

SORBET MAN 2-IN-1 FACE WASH & SCRUB

After this product had been sitting in the bathroom cupboard for two months, I finally succumbed to Genevieve’s pleas and gave it a try. And now I kind of like this cool 2-in-1 face wash & scrub… perhaps a little more than that, but she’s blissfully unaware. I especially like the biodegradable beads that invigorate tired, lacklustre skin. As it’s a South African product, she has to bring it over for me.

6

MONTHLY PEDICURES

I’m embarrassed to admit that I am hooked on monthly pedicures and refuse to miss my monthly appointment. When she’s in New York, Genevieve comes with me – it’s a standing date that includes brunch and a movie.

7

On Trend

FITBIT ALTA BLACK AND GOLD

Genevieve bought one recently to monitor her steps and increase her activity level. I followed suit and bought the identical Fitbit. It’s a great way of monitoring one’s fitness level, particularly as we both are quite lazy when it comes to exercise. We have joined a family account and now challenge each other – every day is a competition to see who can do the most steps.

ALL ABOUT DANIEL Daniel Ross is a real estate investor. He and Genevieve met when she studied in New York in 2016. As a freelance journalist at the time, she wrote an article titled 100 dates in the city. Daniel was her first date. And, as they say, the rest is history...

Seriously Trevor?

Currently coining it as the host of The Daily Show, one of the most coveted comedy roles in the US, funnyman Trevor Noah tackles every imaginable issue head-on with his inimitable style and famous dimpled grin. Joburg Style features an excerpt from his bestselling autobiography, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, which is currently being transformed into a movie starring Lupita Nyong’o as his mother when she was young

T

revor is writing a follow-up to his autobiography as well as filming his bestseller here in Joburg with Cape Town-born Liesl Tommy as lead director. Although we’re hearing more and more about the movie, it has not yet been announced who will play Trevor. There’s no doubt that the best person to play the role is the comedian himself. We’ll just have to wait and see. The following excerpt from his autobiography illustrates Trevor’s take on betrayal, and begs the question: Why do we feel so betrayed when one of our own leaves the country to further their career?

WHAT’S THE DOG GOT TO DO WITH IT?

You’ll be surprised to find out the answer. Here, in his own words, Trevor Noah tells us… Friend, let me tell you the story about Fufi We’d never had dogs in Soweto. Then one day some lady at my mom’s work offered us two puppies. This woman’s Maltese had been impregnated by the bull terrier from next door, a strange mix. My mom said she’d take them both. She brought them home, and I was the happiest kid on earth. My mom named them Fufi and Panther. I don’t know where Fufi’s name came from. Panther had a pink nose, so she was Pink Panther and eventually just Panther. Panther was my mom’s dog; Fufi was mine. Fufi was beautiful. Clean lines, happy face. She looked like a perfect bull terrier, only skinnier because of the Maltese mixed in. Panther was smart. Fufi was dumb as shit. At least we always thought she was. Whenever we called them, Panther would come right away, but Fufi wouldn’t do anything. Panther would run back and get Fufi and then they’d both come. It turned out that Fufi was deaf. Years later, when a burglar was trying to break into our house, he pushed the gate over and it fell on her back and broke her spine. We took her to the vet and she had to be put down. After examining her, the vet came over and told us she was deaf. That’s when we realised that their whole lives Panther had been telling Fufi what to do. Fufi was the love of my life. Beautiful, but stupid. I raised her. I potty-trained her. She slept in my bed. A dog is a great thing for a kid to have. It’s like a bicycle but with emotions. Fufi could do all sorts of tricks. If YouTube had been around, Fufi would have been a star. Fufi was a little rascal as well. During the day we kept the dogs in the backyard, which was enclosed by a wall at least five feet high. After a while, every day we’d come home and Fufi would be sitting outside the gate, waiting for us. We were confused. Was someone opening the gate? It never occurred to us that she could actually scale a five-foot wall. Every morning, Fufi would wait for us to leave, jump over the wall, and go roaming around the

neighbourhood. I caught her one day when I was home for the school holidays. My mom had left for work and I was in the living room. Fufi didn’t know I was there; she thought I was gone because the car was gone. I heard Panther barking, looked out into the backyard, and there was Fufi, scaling the wall. She’d jumped, scampered up the last couple of feet, and then she was gone. I ran out front, grabbed my bicycle, and followed her to see where she was going. She went a long way, to another part of the neighbourhood. Then she went up to this other house and jumped over their wall and into their back yard. What the hell was she doing? I went up to the gate and rang the doorbell. This kid answered. “May I help you?” he said. “Yeah. My dog is in your yard.” “What?” “My dog. She’s in your yard.” Fufi walked up and stood between us. “Fufi, come!” I said. “Let’s go!” This kid looked at Fufi and called her by some other stupid name, Spotty or some bullshit like that. “Spotty, go back inside the house.” “Whoa, whoa,” I said. “Spotty? That’s Fufi!” “No, that’s my dog, Spotty.” “No, that’s Fufi, my friend.” “No, this is Spotty.” “Fufi!” “Spotty!” “Fufi!” Of course, since Fufi was deaf she didn’t respond to ‘Spotty’ or ‘Fufi’. She just stood there. I started swearing. “Give me back my dog!” He went into the house and got his mom and she came out. “What do you want?” she said. “This is our dog. Go away.” I started crying. I turned to Fufi. “Why are you doing this to me? Why, Fufi? Why?” I called to her. I begged her to come. Fufi was deaf to my pleas. And everything else. I jumped onto my bike and raced home, tears running down my face. I loved Fufi so much. To see her with another boy, acting like she didn’t know me, after I raised her, after all the nights we spent together. I was heartbroken. That evening Fufi didn’t come home. The other family had decided to lock her inside, so she couldn’t make it back the way she normally did. My mom got home from work. I was in tears. I told her Fufi had been kidnapped. We went back to the house. My mom rang the bell and confronted the mom. “Look, this is our dog.” This lady lied to my mom’s face. “This is not your dog. We bought it.” “You didn’t buy the dog. It’s our dog.” This woman wasn’t budging, so we went home to get pictures of us with the dogs, certificates from the vet. I was crying the whole time, and my mom was losing her patience with me. “Stop crying! We’ll get the dog! Calm down!” We went back to the house and brought Panther

NOT SO FUNNY ANYMORE… South Africans love Trevor Noah because he has a unique way of making us laugh. But, since he’s taken on The Today Show, he’s had to follow the show format, which is often very political. His predecessor, Jon Stewart, was an exceptionally sharp commentator, and there’s no doubt he’s following suit. America sees Trevor as an expert, because he’s a product of apartheid. These days, his rhetoric revolves around American politics, and often compares South Africa to the US when it comes to politics and racism. “Racism exists. People are getting hurt. And just because it’s not happening to you, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. And, at some point, you have to choose; black or white, pick a side. You can try to hide from it. You can say, ‘Oh I don’t take sides,’ but at some point, life will force you to pick a side,” he writes in his autobiography. He talks from his own experience, as a person of mixed race living through apartheid, which makes what he says even more poignant. “Nearly one million people lived in Soweto. Ninety-nine point nine percent of them were black – and then there was me. I was famous in my neighbourhood just because of the colour of my skin. I was so unique people would give directions using me as a landmark. “The house on Makhalima Street. At the corner you’ll see a light-skinned boy. Take a right there.” There’s a touch of the Trevor humour we all love so much, but it’s become lost in translation. Where he lives now, Trump is the House of Cards, Zuma a Joker he pokes fun at when the opportunity arises. “Comedy is a great tool,” he has admitted. “We [comics] are trying to find ways to use humour to enlighten people without preaching to them.” There’s no doubt that in the past, Trevor was one of the best at doing that. But sadly, in his new role, he is starting to preach. Somewhere along the line, he’s losing that South African touch we love so much.

BETRAYAL, ACCORDING TO SOUTH AFRICANS

with us. My mom showed this lady the pictures and the information from the vet. She still wouldn’t give us Fufi. My mom threatened to call the police. Finally, my mom said, “Okay, I’ll give you a hundred rand.” “Fine,” the lady said. My mom gave her some money and she brought Fufi out. The other kid had to watch his mother sell the dog he thought was his. He started crying. Once Fufi saw Panther, she came right away. The dogs left with us. I sobbed the whole way home, still heartbroken. My mom had no time for my whining. “Why are you crying?” “Because Fufi loves another boy.” “So? Why would that hurt you? It didn’t cost you anything. Fufi’s here. She still loves you. She’s still your dog. So get over it.” Fufi was my first heartbreak. No one has ever betrayed me more than Fufi. It was a valuable lesson for me. The hard thing was understanding that Fufi wasn’t cheating on me. She was merely living her life to the fullest. Until I knew she was going out on her own during the day, her other relationship hadn’t affected me at all. Fufi had no malicious intent. That experience shaped what I felt about relationships for the rest of my life: you do not own the thing that you love. Note: This is an excerpt from Trevor Noah’s bestselling autobiography, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood. The edited copy is from Chapter 7 and is entitled ‘Fufi’.

Like his story of Fufi, betrayal is something that doesn’t sit well with Trevor Noah – or his followers. South Africans have a hard time coping with superstars and celebrities who make it into the big league overseas. Whoever they are, whether it’s a sports star (SA golfer Ernie Els, who now resides in Florida in the US), film star and movie producer (Charlize Theron), musicians (rapsters Die Antwoord spend more time in the US than they do here in South Africa), or a comedian like Trevor who moved to the US to take over as host of the popular late night US TV news and talk show, The Today Show, we feel betrayed. These people are just following their dreams of making it big, whatever it takes. They’re not really deserting us. They’re still South African. Like Fufi, they just have two homes. As Trevor says himself, “I live in South Africa. I’m proud to live there. I’ve always said I want to be a comedian from South Africa in the world. I will stay in places for a bit here and there and pop into New York for a while, maybe stay in London for a year, but my home will always be South Africa. I enjoy it too much.” Charlize Theron will always be Benoni’s sweetheart, but that’s according to us. She’s lived longer in the US than she ever lived in Gauteng. Tennis star Roger Federer, who is half South African (his mom was born in Kempton Park), embraces his roots although he wasn’t born here – he supports an NGO based in the Eastern Cape but you’ll never hear him say he’s South African. Elon Musk is South African-born, but the Tesla/SpaceX/Neuralink billionaire is Canadian American, and proud of it. We like to lay claim to these people, but in effect, we’re laying claim to the most fickle attachment. Do they really identify as South Africans any more? And if they don’t lay claim to being South African, so what? Even if they were deserting us, let’s be honest – we don’t own them.

dvances in technology, shifts in the economic climate, new legislation and the constant change in consumer needs are putting businesses under immense pressure. With all this change happening at such a rapid pace, these organisations rely more and more on their staff to switch things up and keep them afloat – it’s adapt, or sink. Survival in the current economic climate can only come from innovative solutions. Who do these organisations turn to for creative results? Managers. But the managerial role in itself has changed too. It’s no longer about who clocks in first or puts in the most effort. Today’s executives are looking for managers who can come up with the most effective new methods and solutions in the shortest time possible. As a result, managers are looking to upskill – and what better way to become a Master of Business Administration than by studying an MBA? While the Wall Street Journal has labelled the MBA as a ‘nice to have’ as opposed to a ‘must-have’ qualification, things are very different here in South Africa and, in fact, Africa as a whole. It is proposed that Africa will need to generate a million new managers in order to achieve sustainable growth – proving that there’s an immense amount of training to still be done. Unfortunately, studying an MBA isn’t a quick solution, nor is it an easy one. “The MBA is a very demanding degree. The taught component places students under immense pressure to perform over a period of approximately 18 months, and at the same time they have to start working on their independent projects,” says Conrad Viedge, Director of the MBA at Wits Business School. However, “An MBA provides the ideal groundwork in the disciplines of leadership and business management. It’s the ultimate ‘stress test’ for someone wanting to reach their potential. It provides a rare opportunity to think deeply and critically, and also to engage

in problem solving in the face of complex realities,” Viedge explains. Traditionally, an MBA is seen as one of the most effective ways to boost your career, but it involves a lot of time and money. It’s important to know exactly what you’re getting into before you apply. You need to consider which business school will be the right fit for you. Will online courses suit you better? Do you need to do it part time or could you put your career on hold and study full time? And the kicker… how much is it actually going to cost you? Here’s the lowdown on the top four MBAs you can do, right here in the City of Gold.

WITS BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA

The first thing you should know about WBS’s MBA is that its curriculum revolves around five key themes: Context in Africa, Context in South Africa, Sustainability, Entrepreneurial Action and Critical Engagement. The curriculum has been designed specifically to reflect the changing and challenging business landscape in Africa, and thus to provide its students with a degree that is globally relevant. This global outlook is further emphasised by the compulsory global study tour, in which students are offered the choice of 12 global destinations including Dubai, New York, Seattle, China, Russia and Brazil. “The tours provide invaluable exposure to international business practices and different cultures, and for many of our students this is the highlight of their MBA,” says Viedge. WBS is the only business school in South Africa to be a member of the Partnership in International Management (PIM), which means that a wide choice of specialist programmes is available to students at one of 30 highly rated business schools around the world. Furthermore, WBS boasts the largest case study centre in Africa with well over 200 case studies on dilemmas facing local companies and well-known businesspeople. “Using this case study method of learning is effective in putting our students in a position where they have to tackle real-life business challenges and seek viable solutions,” continues Viedge. Currently, the WITS Business School has the highest number of MBA Alumni in Africa, so if you’re studying here, you know you’re in good company.

GORDON INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS SCIENCE (GIBS) MBA

“An MBA empowers students to be able to grow and develop their professional careers, launch their own businesses as well as launch a global career,” explains Luleka Mtongana, Communications Manager for The University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science. “Our programme is designed in a way that helps students to build diverse networks and friendships that will prove invaluable on a professional and personal level,” Mtongana continues. “An MBA is about building general business knowledge to enable graduates to either run or start their own businesses. With the GIBS MBA, students are not only able to run businesses, but they are also able to make various choices throughout their MBA journey to help craft the future they want and realise the impact that they have on society.” Broken down, the GIBS MBA consists of a potent mix of classroom lectures, case studies, business simulations, company visits and syndicate group projects (working/learning groups within a class context), as well as relevant exposure to the best practices of South African and global leadership. GIBS also offers a compulsory global module designed to “provide students with international exposure in destinations that are linked to global best practice and allow them to study first-hand how their peers in diverse markets operate,” says Mtongana. The GIBS MBA Programme is best suited to the student looking for choices. Some of the choices available to students include the format of their study, their electives, the Business Research Report and the international immersion. Firstly, it’s up to the individual as to whether they choose one of two part-time class options or to format their studies full time and attend classes Monday to Friday for the first six months. This is an option that’s really only viable to those able to leave their current employment for the given time. However, after this period the programme is more flexible, allowing students to go back to work or start their own businesses. When it comes to electives, GIBS offers the most extensive portfolio

36 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

in the country with more than 60 options. Each student must select five electives. It’s this level of customisation that allows either a focus on one specific area or to test the waters with a broader and more varied selection. Then each student has to produce a Business Research Report in their particular industry of interest. “Some of our students use the integrated research report to learn more about a problem, which would give them the expertise needed to consult in that area post the MBA. For others, the integrated research report results in new careers,” reveals Mtongana. Finally, the international immersion, one of the highlights of the GIBS MBA journey, allows an exchange opportunity in countries such as Chile, Brazil, The Netherlands, China, France and Russia. Students spend a few weeks at the international business school attending lectures, networking and absorbing new cultural aspects. With such a wide range of choice available to each student, it’s not difficult to understand why the GIBS Executive MBA is ranked number one in Africa and South Africa according to the prestigious UK Financial Times Executive MBA Ranking 2017.

“QUALITY MBA PROGRAMMES ARE ONE SOLUTION TO BUILDING AND SUSTAINING THE LEVEL OF MANAGEMENT EXPERTISE THAT OUR BUSINESSES, GOVERNMENT AND SOCIETY ARE LOOKING FOR”

MONASH SOUTH AFRICA MBA

The Monash South Africa MBA is the new kid on the block, having launched in 2016. Enrolments have continued to grow year on year, apparently due to the fact that Monash understands the magnitude of both the time and cost investment that is laid out by professionals to complete their MBA. It’s no secret that balancing work and family life are difficult as it is. Adding the extra element of an MBA study can be a tricky task. However, the Monash South Africa MBA has been designed to allow the professionals who want to advance their careers to do so, despite demanding schedules, by offering them maximum study flexibility. Firstly, professionals are given the freedom to enrol in the MBA programme at any time during the year, which ultimately sets the tone for studying on their own terms. Subjects are structured into five-week blocks, where students are required to complete one subject at a time. This accommodating factor means that should a student anticipate a time-sensitive project coming up at work, or even a major family event, they have the option to skip the next five-week block and then pick it back up again when it’s more suitable. This allows for the MBA degree to be completed in 18, 24 or 36 months. “Innovation is key to our MBA, and it is one reason why, instead of a standard dissertation at the end of the programme, we ask for an innovation project that incorporates both business theory and application of practical creative intelligence that is taught throughout the course. It helps students to discover their own creative potential and apply it in real-world situations.” Besides offering students a high level of theoretical engagement, intellectual independence and the ability to solve complex business 38 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

problems, the ‘use it now’ concept, where students are taught to apply all they have learnt immediately, is considered the real Monash way.

HENLEY BUSINESS SCHOOL AFRICA

Henley Business School Africa is the African arm of the Henley Business School UK, which is the oldest business school in Europe and exists as part of the University of Reading UK. It was founded in 1946 and now operates in 16 countries, boasting an impressive 70 years of global experience in executive education. The campus in South Africa is now 25 years old, which makes it one of the oldest business schools in the country. The Flexible Executive MBA offered through Henley Business School is known as the ‘family-friendly MBA’ as it adapts to the other commitments in one’s life, and still allows its students to work full time. “Our flexible executive MBA is delivered through a balance of face-toface workshops, teamwork and virtual learning, and is excellent for midcareer managers who are looking to develop their international management competencies,” explains Dr Adri Drotskie, Henley MBA Director. “It’s been specifically designed to have a work, family and study balance,” she says. “Every student has a total support system around them from the start. So much so that most become loyal advocates of Henley as they become part of the Henley family and the ‘Henley way’.” The Henley programme is structured into three stages. Stage one looks at Fundamental Business Foundations – leadership and

personal development, managing processes and systems, managing financial resources and managing people. Stage two focuses on Strategy and Context and managing stakeholders by covering topics such as strategy, international business and reputation and responsibility. Finally, stage three aims to take leadership to a higher level and requires completion of either a dissertation or an integrated business project, as well as current elective modules. “At Henley we believe in the power of learning, or progressive, disciplined, empathetic business education, to build people, organisations and society. When you leave Henley, you do so with the confidence that you have reached a global level of achievement that will be the base of your future and career contributions,” states John Foster-Pedly, Dean and Director Henley Africa confidently. It’s no secret that as a nation we have a strong demand for management skills. Quality MBA and executive programmes are certainly one solution to building and sustaining the level of management expertise that our businesses, government and society are looking for. But it’s the most sought-after leaders who know this is a degree that is about much more than gaining knowledge as traditionally expected – this is an exercise that is also about experiences and relationships, and it’s those who will truly enhance their management practice.

xcept for two years, I’ve lived all my life in Johannesburg. In fact, my father worked as a draughtsman for Crown Mines and we lived there. So mine dumps have always been a part of my life. My late father related a story to me that on returning from the war by train, a loud cheer went up when the troops saw the first mine dump. That’s when they knew they were home. This is a documentation of these landmarks. A strong gold price, a weak rand, a drying up gold reef and advanced gold-extraction technology have all conspired to cause the dumps to start disappearing. The Top Star drive-in is no more.

It’s kind of bitter-sweet. On the one hand it’s a great thing for the environment as these dumps are extremely toxic and contain chemicals such as cyanide. I have come across people living in the vicinity of the dumps who suffer from serious bronchial disorders. On the other hand, there’s that little part of me that will miss the dumps. Because they have always been a part of my life and were my playground as a child. A toxic nostalgia if you will.

e’re loud and proud,” says Maitele Wawe, founder of the Fashion Rebels and The Social Market in Pretoria. The Fashion Rebels started in 2012 with two members – Maitele and partner Thifhe Mudau. Sizo Dlezi joined them a little while later, completing the formidable trio that rules the roost today. “Our name was inspired by our style, which, being very difficult to explain or understand by society, felt like a rebellion against what’s considered ‘normal’ in the fashion industry,” explains Sizo. They’re breaking boundaries in the fashion scene, so the name couldn’t be a more perfect fit. “We were simply a team of creatives who loved and strived for very alternative fashion looks. It wasn’t necessarily our intention to come out as a public fashion trio, but people noticed something unique, and although many didn’t understand it, those who did were drawn to us because we were bold enough to express our creativity through the way we looked,” Sizo adds. Then came the Social Market that launched in 2014 and has grown and developed at a fast pace. “The Social Market is a creative hub where

“As fashion rebels and people who appreciate the arts, we decided to start a market where like-minded people are given a chance to exhibit their work and make money while doing it” we provide a platform for young and upcoming talent in and around Pretoria. The focus is on four elements: fashion, food, art and music. As fashion rebels and people who appreciate the arts, we decided to start a market where like-minded people are given a chance to exhibit their work and make money while doing it, and also to create a space where people can come together, network and collaborate with one another. “Since its launch, the Social Market has moved around the city, from Mushroom Lounge in Central to Hatfield Plaza. We’re currently at 012 Central. The Social Market is held on the first Sunday of every month from 11am to 5pm,” says Thifhe. “Many youngsters were inspired by our confidence and the way we looked. We create a lot of hype by posting pictures of ourselves and the market on social media, and create different looks and trends to follow,” explains Maitele with a grin. And people followed. “It came down to trusting the vision and goal we had and the subculture waiting for us to nourish,” he adds. The Fashion Rebels never expected to create as huge a hype as 48 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

they have. “Initially, we anticipated a bit of a following, but definitely not as much and not at the rate it’s happening. What we predicted would probably take five years to accomplish took much less than that. It still blows our minds how well we are being received by the public,” says Sizo. The key elements that make up the Fashion Rebels include, but are not limited to, their individuality, pride, belief in what they do, and their originality and setting new trends in a creative way. When they’re not turning heads (actually, wait… they’re always turning heads), the trio are students and employees, so their weekdays are filled with a different kind of work. We have to ask: Where does this trio’s inspiration come from? “First and foremost at home, and right in the centre of it all, from each other,” says Maitele. What makes them so influential? They’re fashionable and still appreciate the history and art of fashion without conforming to the rules. As Maitele says, “The sky’s the limit and the only way from here is up.”

THE SOCIAL MARKET Its founders, Maitele Wawe, Thifhelimbilu Mudai and Sizophila Dlezi, call themselves the Fashion Rebels. They started a pilot project in 2014, a social market for Pretoria residents who were interested in growing the city in terms of underground art, fashion, food and music. Since then The Social Market has grown exponentially into a social space where like-minded young people from all over Gauteng get together on the first Sunday of every month to meet, network and create a platform for entrepreneurs to market their unique products. Located at The Mushroom Lounge in Francis Baard Street in Pretoria, the market features dozens of stalls offering everything from vintage and punk jewellery to Afro-chic garments. There’s a party atmosphere with food, drinks, DJs and even live music occasionally. www.facebook.com/TheSocialMarketPretoria

There’s also the Thames, with plenty of exciting places to explore on both riverbanks, including museums, historic pubs, the changing of the guard, reminiscences of Harry Potter – you name it. Whilst there are plenty of places to go and things to do, I managed to find some hidden treasures, especially things to enthrall the kids (a trip to London with kids aged six and seven is another story entirely, especially over the festive season). For starters we headed for Greenwich to explore Cutty Sark, one of London’s most inventive museums, a celebrated Victorian sailing ship that was the fastest in its time, now an award-winning attraction. We climbed on board and met colourful characters from the ship’s past. The kids loved learning about life at sea, walking beneath the original hull and also the spectacular city views from this historic ship. In Greenwich, we also visited the National Maritime Museum, probably the largest of its kind in the world – and entrance is free. With action-packed adventure for kids, it’s a dream come true in the free AHOY! Gallery where under sevens reign supreme, or at All Hands for six-to12year-olds.

SOMETHING FISHY

AFTER SPENDING A FEW DAYS IN DULLSTROOM, LIZ FERRETT OFFERS AN INSIGHT INTO WHERE TO GO, WHAT TO DO AND HER CHOICE OF PLACE TO STAY

T

his small town in Mpumalanga is one of the country’s premier fly fishing destinations – but there’s plenty to do in Dullstroom even if you don’t want to fish. Located en route to the Kruger National Park, Dullstroom is a popular winter destination. If you don’t fish, don’t despair – there are numerous activities to choose from as well as great restaurants to visit offering excellent local dishes, and the shops selling arts, crafts and other items are a joy to explore. The scenery is beautiful, and there’s nothing quite like sitting by the fireside with something delicious to drink, reminiscing over your day’s adventures. Whether or not fishing is your passion, it’s worth having a private lesson, like I did, at Walkersons, the stunning old-world establishment where we stayed for a few days. I have to admit, it is far more difficult than it looks. You have to be patient and concentrate hard if you’re going to make this a favourite pastime. Not my idea of fun, but many others have found fly fishing a dream and the perfect way to relax. So, what did I do while everyone else went fishing? For starters, there’s horse riding, mountain biking and walking trails (we went for a long walk one morning, which we all enjoyed, exploring the scenic countryside with its rolling hills and huge dams). I also enjoyed

discovering the little village, which is an absolute treat. I visited the Shop @ 67 Centre, which is like a tiny village mall with shops, art galleries and a restaurant. The boutique stores offer everything from designer jewellery and fashion to leather accessories, ceramics, glassware, décor pieces and more. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Wild About Whisky, a small but extremely well-stocked bar in the village that’s filled with American, Irish and Scotch whiskies just waiting to be tasted. Our tasting included half a dozen half tots of carefully chosen nectars. We learned a lot about this popular drink. One of the members of our group chose to do a gin sampling instead of a whisky tasting; it was accompanied by various garnishes, everything from strawberry and pepper to lemon and thyme. Hidden on a side road in the village is one of Dullstroom’s landmarks, Mrs Simpson’s Restaurant. Owners Bryan Wolmarans and Stephen De Meyer have lived here for over 22 years. They opened this

SPA In Dullstroom I stayed at the charming Walkersons Hotel & Spa which offers scenic views of hills and well-stocked trout dams, stunning accommodation and fine country dining. A highlight of my visit was the stunning spa that offers a range of indulgent treatments, including massages, facials or just a mani and pedi. There’s no better way to relax.

restaurant in 2005, and it soon gained a reputation for its excellent cuisine. It has won numerous awards over the years, but has another claim to fame – it is a mini museum, with handbags, gloves and shoes decorating the walls. The reason? The restaurant is named after Mrs Wallis Simpson, the late Duchess of Windsor, who was famous for her vast collection of these accessories. The items on display are gifts from patrons and villagers… what a treat! The food is hearty and delicious and the service is excellent. My favourites were the yummy tomato soup followed by the bobotie; just what I needed on a misty and chilly evening. Mrs Simpson’s ticks all the boxes; it is important to book ahead, though, as it is very popular.

his triangle of northern suburbs is home to some of the best stores, coffee shops and restaurants in the city. Hyde Park is all glitter and glam, Dunkeld is old money – a tad shabby in spots, but with a special cachet – and Craighall Park is up and coming, a blend of ontrend and a little bit country. These are busy suburbs, each with its own special charm. In peak hour traffic in Dunkeld, the taxis drive up Bompas on the wrong side of the road. In peak hour traffic in Craighall Park, you can take a detour past the Delta and cool off. And in peak hour traffic in Hyde Park, nothing much changes at all. Jan Smuts is a nightmare any time of the day as cars head on and off the Nicol Highway.

COFFEE

Motherland and Fournos in Dunkeld West are favourites, and at Glenda’s in Hyde Park Square, coffee drinkers spill out into the courtyard to catch the sun. In Hyde Park Corner, you are spoilt for choice between Exclusive Books Café, Tasha’s, Woolworths Café and JB Rivers, while Hodges in The Colony is renowned for great coffee to wash down the humungous muffins. Cnr Café is another contender in the morning coffee stakes. On weekends, Delta Café is packed, and young mothers and stay-at-homers frequent it every morning. Another popular coffee spot is Dolci Café around the corner from The Spar in Craighall; it offers great coffee to wash down its decadent pastries.

DINING

DW eleven-13 in Dunkeld West Centre is renowned for its fine dining experience; read our review in the Fine Dining Section of Eat.Drink on page 96. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In Hyde Park Square next door is Glenda’s, everybody’s favourite spot for great cakes and a menu of constantly changing, always delicious meals. There’s also a takeaway patisserie counter called Dotty Choux for owner Glenda Lederle’s famous cakes and pastries. In Hutton Court, there’s traditional Italian fine dining at Il Tartufo, famous for its soups and fresh, home-made pasta. There’s also Andiccio 24, which delivers pizzas 24/7. Shepherd’s Market is literally a parking lot, but it’s home to three restaurants, Yung Chen, which offers authentic Chinese that most people

BEST KEPT SECRET We all know Hyde Park’s boutiques are some of the best in the city, but only those in the know can exchange pleasantries with the likes of Mirriam, whose business, Mirriam’s Alterations, is run from the shopping centre parking lot. She initially started in a storeroom, doing alterations for the clients of the upmarket boutiques upstairs. Now Miriam has a little store on the fifth-floor parking lot, where she and her team sew beautiful African-style outfits, school and business uniforms, and offer an exceptional tailoring service.

take away, Italian favourite Modo Mio and Soul Souvlaki, an absolute joy when it comes to Greek dishes. It features two tiny tables and an outside area, or you can take your souvlaki and other delights home. In The Colony, you’ll find Pronto, whose unique Italian dishes are a cut above. It also offers frozen meals to take home. The Chinese restaurant in the centre, Sing Fei, offers great traditional dishes; in fact, buses full of Chinese tourists descend here to have a taste of home cooking. Hyde Park Shopping’s Red Chamber is legendary. Emma Chen’s five spice chicken wings and dumplings are the reason many people return time and again. EB Social Kitchen & Bar offers another great dining experience tucked away at the back of Exclusive Books, and there’s also the standout Willoughby & Co, and the ever popular So Yum. Further down Jan Smuts you’ll find The Royale, owned by the guys who opened Brian Lara in Linden. With a Cuban menu and plenty to drink, it’s the place to see and be seen right now. On Buckingham Avenue, you’ll find another great favourite, the Cnr Café. Owner and chef Greig Walker is a master of his craft; he changes the menu regularly to incorporate seasonal and healthy options. Just up the road is another well-kept secret, Dolci, a patisserie and Italian restaurant run by pastry chef Jackie Righi-Boyd. The food is delicious and the pastries have their own fan club. For a far more casual dining experience, there’s AJ’s in the Park, a family-friendly, chilled, countrysidestyle eatery offering great food at affordable prices. And let’s not forget Possums on Burnside, a little world on its own offering some of the best food this side of Rosebank.

NIGHTLIFE

The Colony’s latest hotspot is the Hashtag Kitchen & Bar, which boasts a restaurant as well as three bars where the young and restless come to party on excellent cocktails, drinks and milkshakes. The Royale is another favourite with the under 35s (its cocktails are worth writing home about). And then there’s the Island Bar at Tsogo Sun Hyde Park, where you can sip sundowners and cocktails on the pool deck with a view of the lush northern suburbs. Possums on Burnside has a fabulous wine, beer and cocktail menu, making it a great choice for a sundowner or pre-dinner drinks. For a raucous time, head for the Colony Arms for a beer or two or three... There’s also Giles, where business deals 68 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

are made and romances are kindled. Come big sports events, you’ll find revellers cheering on their favourite teams as they watch the game on a big screen TV. This upmarket pub/restaurant is busy every evening, because of its great food and spectacular sunset views over Craighall Park from the deck. For those who prefer a quieter evening that doesn’t involve dining out, there’s always NuMetro Hyde Park where you can lie back in your leather recliner with popcorn and a cold drink, and watch a choice of regular, 3D or 4D movies.

THE DELTA EXPERIENCE

Tucked away in Craighall Park, the Delta is the neighbourhood’s best kept secret, the spot to take your dog for some fun or the place to go to jog, saunter or stroll along. Colourful Splendour Nursery offers great plants and a country atmosphere, while right next door is a small stable yard called Ranger Stables, offering horse riding,

pony rides, pony parties and lessons, too. Also here is the popular Delta Café where you can have a bite to eat, let the kids run riot and purchase organic veg on Saturday mornings. PAMPER

Il Barbiere in Dunkeld has been offering old-fashioned barber services for decades and is still the go-to place for those who want the real McCoy. Also in Dunkeld West centre is Sorbet Dry Bar, recently revamped to offer more than just the blowdries, manis and pedis it has become famous for. The place is always packed to the rafters. In Hyde Park, there’s Carlton Hair, base for celebrity hairstylist and travel writer David Gillson, whose travel escapades often grace our pages. Its Blowdry Bar is equally renowned and the colourists are legendary, David especially. In Craighall Park, there’s Toast, a luxury nail bar and beauty salon. Its treatments are luxurious, and it also offers a selection of shoes and handbags.

SHOPPING

Like restaurants, shops in this area abound. Along with upmarket fashion chains such as Scotch & Soda and Superdry, Hyde Park Corner is home to designer stores including Armani, Versace and Burberry as well as exclusive boutique 2A. There’s also Charles Greig Jewellers, Luminance, Fabiani, Longchamp, Paul Smith… the list is endless. Other great stores in the centre include Generation Furniture for exclusive furniture and

Head Interiors in the same square is one of the country’s oldest and most acclaimed architecture and design firms. In the Colony, the Video Spot is where those who don’t download head for the latest movies and TV series. And next door to the Cnr Cafe is artist Yiull Damaso’s studio which hosts regular exhibitions.

TELL NO ONE…

Dunkeld West Shopping Centre is full of surprises. Dunkeld Fruit & Flowers was the first fruit and veggie store in town to offer beautifully put together bouquets, but it is famous for another reason, too. If you need an unusual fruit or vegetable ingredient, or a particular type of flower, they will source it for you at the market if it’s in season and not in-store. Petite Jewellers changes watch batteries while you wait. There’s nowhere better to get a dog or cat tag engraved than from Fanie, whose little stand is located just outside Stax, or a gift than from eclectic store Firehouse. 48 hours IN THE 021 PR IS THEIR GAME, BUT TRAVEL IS THEIR PASSION. IAN AND LISE MANLEY LIVE OUTSIDE CAPE TOWN, BUT ENJOY TAKING THEIR TWO SONS, LUKE AND GUY, TO SPEND A FUN WEEKEND IN THE MOTHER CITY 11AM As we live in the beautiful Riebeek Valley, around 88km from Cape Town (a drive that takes just over an hour), it’s always a treat for us to take our two boys, Guy and Luke, for a weekend in the Mother City. Affordable luxury comes in the form of the newly renovated and iconic Cape Town Ritz Hotel in Sea Point. The hotel opened its doors in December after a R120 million renovation, and the new iteration is quite spectacular.

Day 1

12PM After checking in at The Ritz, we head for the hotel’s vibey CASA Restaurant where delicious sushi and pizzas are served with the obligatory glass of chilled rosé at this glam restaurant on the hotel pool deck. The atmosphere and the menu offer a taste of the Miami lifestyle, with an all-day menu featuring everything from pizzas to sushi and burgers, as well as old classics like a club sandwich. After that we roll onto the pool cabanas to catch a few sun rays with a good book whilst the boys swim and play a few board games. 74 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

3PM Time to head for an ice cream and a cup of coffee, and not necessarily in that order. Venezia Ice Cream on Sea Point’s Main Road has been around for a long time, and for good reason. Their ice cream is delicious, and reasonably priced, too. Coffee isn’t far away, in Regent Road, at mischu, an award-winning little gem that serves arguably the best cappuccino in town. The team is not only made up of talented barristas – these people are serious about their coffee, but the espresso-based offerings on order are all delicious. 4.30pm After a lazy afternoon at the pool and some refreshments, we like to head for the stunning Sea Point promenade to walk or cycle, people watch and smell the sea air. Very few places offer such an ideal, breathtaking setting and it’s great to get some exercise.. 6PM Some

and

entertainment at the V&A Waterfront is always fun. There’s plenty to do there – the boys enjoy exploring, or watching the ships in the harbour, and we take the opportunity to sit down and watch the sunset with a sundowner in hand. 8PM Dinner has to be at Top of The Ritz, the hotel’s newly updated revolving restaurant. This retro classic has had a complete overhaul, but still offers those exquisite 360° views of the city and its menu is even better than it ever was. There’s nothing like having a great dinner while the restaurant revolves; it’s a huge treat for the whole family, and a favourite with locals and tourists alike who enjoy coming here to celebrate special occasions.

We enjoy a special eco tour of the farm, complete with ducks and a chicken mobile, and enjoy the peace and beautiful scenery.

9AM Breakfast is at one of our favourite spots, the iconic Coco Safar Café in Sea Point. This ridiculously luxurious café is the type of place you would find on a stylish Paris boulevard. Offering decadent and feather light pastries, jewel-coloured macaroons and a couture coffee experience, it’s the perfect spot for breakfast washed down with worldclass coffee. We always find it’s difficult to leave! Before you do leave, make sure to check out the café’s exceptional coffee beans and compostable Rooibos and Rooibos capsules (Nespresso compatible, by the way) that are all freshly roasted on site.

Day 2

10.30AM If there’s time, or if the weather is glorious, we head for Muizenburg to enjoy the sun, sea and sand. 12PM As we head back toward home in the Riebeek Valley, we take a leisurely drive out to the Winelands, to Avondale wine estate in Paarl. The place ticks all the boxes for a Sunday adventure.

12.30PM Lunch is at Avondale’s famous FABER restaurant, acclaimed for handcrafting food and wine that is authentic and evocative. Chef Dale Stevens sources the majority of his produce from the farm, making the whole experience a healthy, delicious farm to table experience. We never miss the opportunity to do a special tasting of Avondale’s magnificent wines, which we pair with our lunch. 4PM Once back in Riebeek-Kasteel, we take a walk around the village with the dogs to prepare us for the week ahead with a stop at the town’s famous Royal Hotel, the oldest hotel in South Africa. Visitors enjoy spectacular views of the valley and the Kasteelberg from the garden, pool and pool deck. Then a drink in the 150-year-old Colonial bar next to the restaurant. This is where we go to savour one of its legendary gin & tonics and complete the perfect family weekend.

MR & MRS M Ian and Lise Manley own PR agency Manley Communications, which specialises in luxury travel, wine and the lifestyle industry. They have lived and worked in the heart of the Swartland, in Riebeek Kasteel, for 14 years. The town, which is one of the oldest in the country, is located 80km north-west of Cape Town. They have two sons, Luke and Guy.

48 hours IN THE 031 DURBAN RESIDENT AND PR CONSULTANT JOANNE HAYES OFFERS A COLLECTION OF HIDDEN GEMS TO EXPLORE IN HER HOME CITY

8.30AM Start your itinerary on a Friday, because some of the places aren’t easily accessible on weekends and I don’t want you to miss out. Head for the Durban beachfront, the best spot to get some exercise first thing in the morning. If you don’t feel like walking you can hire a bike at Bike & Bean on the Snell Parade at North Beach. After breathing in the sea air and working up a sweat, have breakfast at Surf Riders Café on the beach at Addington, where you can enjoy some delicious food overlooking the beach. It’s a great way to start the day.

Day 1

10.30AM Drive to the Phansi Museum in Glenwood, which is one of Durban’s best-kept secrets. The museum is a community art centre set in a British Colonialstyle villa that has become a National Monument. The museum offers many exciting features, including special exhibitions, education and outreach programmes, as well as travelling exhibitions. It celebrates individual genius as it is

expressed through works of art, and the items on display portray the creative talent of the people who live in and around Durban. Then, if you have time, head for the butterfly habitat garden at the Durban Botanic Gardens, the city’s oldest public institution. The gardens cover 15 hectares of subtropical beauty. 1PM Time for lunch – I suggest you head for Florida Road, which is Durban’s restaurant-cum-party street. My favourite is Afro’s Chicken Shop, a Durban institution for chicken ‘n chips, which also has a branch on the beachfront. Bring your own wine and sit outside under the fever trees for a stunning al fresco experience. 2.30PM Spend the afternoon in the burgeoning Station Drive

Precinct, which abounds with art, culture and great artisanal food. A regentrified, previously shabby area, it offers some great options, including the African Art Centre, which recently moved there from another location, plenty of African crafts, a brewery called That Brewing Company and the S43 restaurant. Sample some beer at the brewery and explore the area. It’s a treat. If you prefer, you could contact Jonas from BESETdurban to take you on the most amazing curated walking tour of the area. 6PM Drive to Umhlanga to enjoy sundowners on The Ocean Terrace of The Oyster Box, overlooking the sea. My ideal dinner would be the amazing sushi at The Oyster Bar, which is freshly made and accompanied by fabulous live music.

JOANNE HAYES

“Visit Abingdon, the only wine estate in KZN” 8.30am Today’s morning stroll or jog should be an adventure on the Umhlanga promenade. Then head up the hill for a hearty breakfast at Old Town Italy in Gateway. It’s a restaurant and deli offering scrumptious Italian fare.

Day 2

10am Head off in a northerly direction for Ballito to enjoy an active morning on a microlight flight down the East Coast and Durban’s Golden Mile. It’s not only fun, but gives a completely different perspective of the KZN coastline from above. 12.30pm Now that you’ve seen Durban from every perspective, take off for the Midlands to visit the only wine estate in KZN, the Abingdon Wine Estate. Enjoy winetasting in the tasting room overlooking the vineyard, followed by a late lunch either overlooking the estate or by the fireside. The estate is a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer. The entire experience is great fun in a very scenic setting.

5.30pm Take a leisurely drive back to Durban. There’s only one way to spend your last night in our glorious city and that’s at The Chairman at the Point, a sophisticated world-class jazz club that offers live jazz performances and food that’s not half bad either. Make sure you have a very late dinner, as the jazz only starts at 10pm. If jazz isn’t your passion, why not try La Vue, a floating restaurant that offers fine dining and beautiful night views of the city from the water. There are two bars, a dance floor and the restaurant itself, making it a great way to spend an evening. It leaves from Wilson’s Wharf.

Joanne Hayes is the sum of her diverse parts… and they are many. She lives to travel, eat and drink rosé, bubbly and the odd single malt whisky, wherever in the world her travels take her. This winter, La Petite Ferme in Franschhoek is warming up for a grand season of gastronomic delights. In a collaboration between winemaker Wikus Pretorius and La Petite Ferme’s enthusiastic chefs, the estate’s ‘Chefs and the Vine’ experience, which takes place from May through to the end of August, is sure to be an unforgettable event. Each soirée will be presented by Wikus and includes a special tutored pre-dinner tasting of handcrafted wines from the estate’s cellar. These wines are compared with others from nearby terroirs as well as from afar. Each evening, the wines will be of the same cultivar, offering a unique opportunity to compare different expressions and the effect of the terroirs and winemaking techniques.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RUM There are three main types of rum – white rum, dark rum and spiced rum. The alcoholic content differs in each of the three types. For instance, Coconut rum has 20 percent alcohol, while others can have up to 75.5 percent.

RUM-BLE IN THE (CONCRETE) JUNGLE YES, RUM IS A POPULAR TIPPLE IN JOBURG. WHETHER SERVED IN A REFRESHING COCKTAIL OR A HOT DRINK BY THE FIRESIDE, THIS VERSATILE SPIRIT IS WORTH SAVOURING

S

o you thought rum was an ingredient used to create a refreshing cocktail? The type you sip while soaking up the sun on a tropical island? Well, you’re right. But it’s also a great drink to enjoy by the fireside, if you have a predilection for a hot toddy, or a ridiculously decadent hot chocolate. Whichever way you look at it, rum conjures up images of warmth. Whether it’s that tropical island or a welcoming hearth, no matter. The spirit itself can be made anywhere in the world (it’s even made here in South Africa).

It hails from the tropical Caribbean islands where sugar cane grew in profusion. In fact, it was created by plantation slaves on the islands in the 17th century, when they discovered that molasses, which is a by-product of refining sugar cane until it becomes sugar, could be fermented and transformed into alcohol. Of course, there’s more. Distilling these alcoholic byproducts actually removed impurities in the alcohol, and this is how rum was first made. Apparently, the island of Barbados lays claim to being the place where

Cuba Libre was created in Cuba in the early 1900s, but its exact origins are not known. It became popular shortly after 1900.

rum originated. To this day, rum is still produced from sugar cane. The cane is pressed to remove any excess water, and fermented immediately to create ‘rhum agricole’ or boiled to make a molasses by-product, from which various types of rum are made. Like many other spirits, rum does benefit from aging. In Jamaica and Barbados the rum is distilled in a pot, while in Cuba it’s distilled in a column. The rum is aged for a brief amount of time, often in previously used wooden casks. The reason for aging the spirit is the climate. As rum is made where it’s hot, the reaction that takes place while it’s being aged in the cask takes place quite quickly. What type of cask the rum is aged in creates its particular flavour, along with a recipe of exotic ingredients such as spice, tropical fruit, caramel and vanilla. Yeast is often added (Bacardi, for instance, known for its very light rums, breeds yeast specifically to ferment molasses even faster than it normally takes).

Rums are distinguished mainly by colour White rum This rum is clear and lighterbodied. It is aged very briefly and then filtered. Gold rum It’s slightly more complex than white rum as it is aged in oak barrels. It is popular as an ingredient in cocktails. Dark rum This rum is aged for longer periods than the others. It features darker, fuller flavours. Drink it neat. Demerara rum Made from sugar cane grown in Guyana, it has a rich, dark flavour. Similar to Jamaican rum. Spiced rum This is a distilled rum that has been flavoured with spices. Rhum agricole Made with sugar cane instead of molasses, it can be either white, gold or dark.

Located inside the Mad Giant Brewery in the 1 Fox Precinct, Urbanologi is always searching for new flavours, ingredients, processes and techniques. Combining fresh local and Asian ingredients, the kitchen produces an avant-garde selection of dishes that harness the character of street food and are quite unique. Dining here offers a unique experience in a most innovative environment.

MYTHOS

www.mythos.co.za The Design Quarter boasts numerous excellent restaurants, but Mythos remains our favourite, not least because the food is so authentically, deliciously Greek. The menu is filled with family recipes passed down through generations, with imported ingredients to ensure this eatery is the closest you can get to parking off on a Greek island. The meze portions are generous as well as moreish, and the fish options are extremely popular.

Mezepoli is the sort of place you come to when you want a great night out with friends, to celebrate an occasion or just tuck in to some of the best Mediterranean food this side of Europe. Whatever you order will be delicious. Whatever you don’t order will be there waiting when you return.

NIKOS

As Nikos is becomingly increasingly popular, it’s best to get there early, even on weekdays, as the restaurant doesn’t take bookings.

The food is legendary, the meze, salads, dips and main meals pictureperfect on the plate – and they taste as good as they look. Portions are generous, service is good and the experience is, as the restaurant’s name implies, like sitting at the Plaka in Athens.

THUNDER GUN STEAKHOUSE www.thundergun.co.za

Generations of families have piled into the car to enjoy steakhouse evenings at the Thunder Gun in Northcliff. And to this day, nothing quite compares. It’s a step back in time to when chips were extra crispy, the steaks melt-inthe-mouth and the ribs to die for. The sauces are the same as they were way back when, the coke floats a step back in time to a bygone era and the milkshakes… we could go on and on. Best you visit it yourself for a nostalgic meal that is as good as it was the last time you were there.

BELLINIS

www.bellinis.co.za That cachet is still there, the tables are still full and the food is as delicious as ever at Bellinis in Illovo. The menu is small, the food street-style with that extra panache (we’re talking fillet four different ways, prego, baked potatoes, chicken peri peri and potato rosti, all very French and very delicious). You’ll see some old faces, a smattering of new ones, but one thing is certain – the wine flows, the atmosphere is electric and this is the place to see and be seen, especially on Thursday nights and weekends.

Tried & tested

www.fullstopcafe.co.za

Parktown North is Full Stop Café’s second home – it was originally in Parkhurst, on the corner where Vovo Telo is located. The first iteration was edgy, but lots of fun, with great snacks and dishes. The newer location has become everybody’s favourite spot to get away from it all, to enjoy good food, good booze and great company, in no particular order. Located in what was once a house on Seventh Avenue, the restaurant spreads out into the garden, offering al fresco dining and relaxation.

MASTRANTONIO www.mastrantonio.com

This Illovo restaurant is a firm favourite with Joburg’s who’s who. It’s always packed to the rafters in the evenings, offering those signature Italian delights that have patrons coming back time and again for more. There’s a homely atmosphere here, especially if you’re one of the regulars, and the food at this exceptional restaurant never disappoints. Portions have remained generous and service is excellent. A must-visit if you haven’t been here yet.

SWALLOWS INN 011 838 2946

The other night I ate at a really nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going – George Carlin

The oldest Chinese restaurant in Joburg, Swallows Inn at Number 1 Commissioner Street is still the only place to go if you want truly authentic fare. Step through the doors and you step into another time, another place entirely, a restaurant that offers all the pomp and splendour that a true Chinese meal entails. Your set menu brings one delightful taste sensation after another and there’s always room for just a little bit more, just another bite. The tea, the sweetmeats, the delicious decadence… 60 years on and Swallows Inn never ceases to delight.

The place is always bustling, the décor a quirky mix of simple and silly, with a variety of neckties adorning every corner. The beer and wine flow and the prawns will linger in your memory long after you’re tucked up in bed. No wonder the place is still going after all these years. It’s an institution. Little Portugal just like the old days. You can’t get better than that.

For a real taste of the past, head to Jacksons Food Market in Bryanston and stock up on some of the delicious dishes that used to be served at the iconic Le Canard Restaurant in Sandown. The restaurant may have closed its doors a few years ago, but owner and master chef Freda Appelbaum set up her staff in a small business that produces the classic French dishes Le Canard was so famous for. In addition, the Le Canard team, which comprises chefs John Ndlovu and Godfrey Matsepe as well as Frans Ditshego, will offer dishes from the award-winning menu for catered dinners and lunches.

SCHWABINGER STUBEN

BISMILLAH RESTAURANT

You can’t eat typically German food without washing it down with a beer. And at Schwabinger Stuben in Randburg, the food and the beer are as good as it gets. This restaurant and beer garden is one of Joburg’s top and best-known German establishments, offering a menu of traditional dishes like Stubenbrett and Eisbein, Schnitzel and Wurst, and everything in-between. Schwabinger is all about the truly German experience. There’s an exuberance, a sense of festivity that keeps the crowds coming back for more.

Fordsburg is Joburg’s Little India, home to a long established Indian restaurant that offers a taste of three different cuisines – traditional dishes from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. Bismillah’s authentic delicacies are made extra special because of the chefs’ culinary talent; they are a kaleidoscope of colourful dishes with aromas to match, a cultural experience more than just a meal.

THE RADIUM BEERHALL www.theradium.co.za

Music and mayhem, with some great Portuguese dishes thrown in for good measure. That’s The Radium in a nutshell. And the place hasn’t changed a bit since you last entered its portals. The beer is always in demand, it’s hard to get to the counter and, if you’re lucky enough to find a table and sit down, you’ll find yourself in heaven when the food arrives. It’s that good. Everybody’s favourite spot to let loose is one of the only places to visit in Orange Grove these days – but it’s a good reason to head there.

www.braesidebutchery.co.za Those in the know have been heading for Braeside in Greenside for years now, to stock up on great meat – and biltong. The meat is 100 percent certified grass-fed and free range, making it even more appealing. The products are also available to order online. Biltong-wise, you can enjoy venison biltong, plain or chilli, bacon biltong and biltong pre-packs in different sizes. If you go in store, you can also pick up fresh dairy products, free range eggs, stone-ground flour and various vegan-friendly, gluten- and sugar-free goodies as well.

STEVE’S BILTONG 011 327 6298

Yes, Fourth Avenue has everything – pubs, restaurants, coffee shops – even a biltong bars. Next to the boxing gym is biltong paradise – every flavour imaginable (chilli is very popular), even chicken biltong. And biltong sticks of course. A veritable treasure trove when it comes to good biltong.

OAKLANDS BUTCHERY www.oaklandsbutchery.co.za

A landmark in the neighbourhood for almost 50 years, Oaklands Butchery offers a wide selection of specialty meats and poultry including free range and Wagyu grass-fed beef, veal, venison, quail, Italian delicacies and cold meats. The biltong and dry wors, both beef and game, is legendary, and the staff will gladly vacuum-pack it for you if you’re hand-delivering to friends and family overseas. For those who don’t eat red meat, it offers a delicious alternative – chicken or turkey biltong!

Best bil tong

www.sloanemeat.co.za Bryanston’s best biltong is found in the Sloane Park Shopping Centre at this popular butchery, which also offers a wide selection of quality meats. It has long been renowned for having some of the best biltong in town – but that’s not all you can pick up there. It also offers local and imported cheeses, wines, dairy products, fruit and veg, a hot lunch counter and imported goodies to tempt your taste buds.

BEST BILTONG BAR 011 161 7301

Bedford Centre’s best-kept secret, this little store is a treasure house filled with every type of meat you can imagine, all dried to biltong perfection. We’re talking bacon, beef, ostrich, kudu and dry wors. There’s even pork crackling and Cabanossi. Sample it every which way – cubes, shavings, slices or strips and think long and hard before choosing your flavour, which can vary from chutney and chilli to barbecue, peri peri and garlic.

R&M MEATS 011 341-0170

Biltong is a feature in many cultures and cuisines around the world. There’s kilishi, a version of biltong that originated in Nigeria, and kuivaliha, salted and dried reindeer meat, which is a traditional delicacy of Northern Finland

Dunkeld West’s butchery is as renowned for its meat as it is for its great biltong. And not only is the biltong good, it also has fabulous flavour. The owners take great pride in their product, which is evident by the queues on weekends. Most of those waiting in line aren’t there only for the biltong; they are also there to stock up on meat for the weekend.

KOMATIE BUTCHERY 011 646 1008

Emmarentia is home to one of Joburg’s best butchers, which also just happens to make legendary biltong as well. So double up next time you’re in the neighbourhood, with excellent cuts of meat plus some of the best biltong you’ll taste in the city.

CNR CAFÉ

www.cnrcafe.com Craighall Park’s fabulous all-day restaurant offers its fair share of sweet offerings as well as healthy items to keep everybody happy. If it’s cheesecake you’re after, you’ll find it in the glass display cabinet where all the treats are displayed, wedged between a heavenly rainbow cake and a lemon meringue pie that is a slice of heaven.

Say cheese

www.goliathcomedyclub.com

44 Stanley’s stunning Salvation Café is famous for its sweet offerings, and the baked cheesecake with a berry coulis is one of the reasons it’s so popular. Find a spot in the sun at this busy little café and you won’t want to leave. Add that perfect slice (less is more) of cheesecake to your order and you’ll be back for another taste, sooner rather than later.

BELLE’S PATISSERIE www.bellespatisserie.co.za

Birdhaven’s branch of Belle’s boasts the best cheesecake that side of Joburg. Another must-order, must-try cheesecake that has you begging for just another sliver. We’re not sure how they do it. Perhaps it’s the cream cheese, maybe it’s the recipe. Whatever, it’s one of the most moreish cheesecakes we’ve had the privilege of tasting. Order a slice if you have the discipline to have just one. Or throw caution to the wind and order an entire cake. It’s that good. If you really are a sucker for punishment and on a diet, don’t despair – the skinny cheesecake is to die for.

106 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Cheesecake apparently originated in Greece. In fact, it was even served to athletes at the first-ever Olympic Games in 776 BC

When you visit the Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch, you’re there for the laughs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stop at the club’s Roast Café and have a mean slice of cheesecake. The café’s offering is paired with Nutella, a match made in heaven and one that is unbeatable. It’s a baked cheesecake, and the blend of chocolate nuttiness that Nutella has perfected with cheesy yumminess is heaven personified.

THE MARKETPLACE 011 447 4436

This unique little deli in Craighall, next to Giles, offers home-fromhome cooked meals as well as a selection of cakes, ice cream and biscuits. But the one item that people have to queue up for is the cheesecake. You can preorder, or take your chances, but we suggest the former. The cake comes in small (enough for three, we think) or large (normal size). It’s unmatched.

THE WHIPPET COFFEE

www.thewhippetcoffee.com Linden’s best cake shop has a delectable cheesecake on the menu – it’s New York style, with a sour cream topping that takes the edge off the sweetness and makes you keep going back for more.

Many of these animals were originally pets or bred for the pet trade, and it is heartening to see them so happy in their natural habitat. Informative tours are on offer to enlighten adults and kids about these primates and to create awareness of the benefit of releasing them into the wild. There’s also a full- or half-day Guided Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary Programme where kids aged eight to 14 can get up close with elephants and monkeys in a safe learning environment.

NOT A SINGLE STORY - WINTER SCULPTURE EXHIBITION 2018

NIROX SCULPTURE PARK 2018 The NIROX Foundation’s annual winter sculpture exhibition takes place this year in collaboration with the Swedish Sculpture Park, Wanås Konst/The Wanås Foundation, making it a bi-continental exchange between two of the world’s leading sculpture parks. The exhibition is supported by The Swedish Postcode Foundation. Its title, Not a Single Story, is inspired by a piece written by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who discusses how diversity strengthens rather than divides us. The selected artists are both forerunners and emerging artists from various backgrounds, representing a rich diversity of perspectives and influences. By looking at overlapping dialogues through concurrent individual practices, contemporary concerns fuse together to form an open topography of viewpoints. The NIROX Winter Programme includes educational exchanges, a performance programme, talks, tours and workshops, as well as concerts and pop-up restaurants.

AFTERLIFE

WITS ART MUSEUM www.wits.ac.za

Multi-disciplinary artist Ross Passmoor’s exhibition, Afterlife, is a fragment of his creative Ph.D. The doctoral degree examines some of the ongoing moments of making that constitute an artistic practice. Building on Tunnel Vision, a solo exhibition held at the Point of Order in 2017, he continues to explore some of the ways in which discarded materials found near his home can be worked with. A sense of history is thus generated through the material, as well as a rootedness to the spaces he frequents.

THE ABSTRACT COLLECTION – MICHAEL MEYERSFELD

GALLERY 2, PARKWOOD www.gallery2.co.za

Michael Meyersfeld is known for his stark, sometimes sombre, lonely and edgy imagery presented as social commentary, for images with subtle nuances such as fear, titillation and humour designed to portray emotional and behavioural patterns. His recent photographs require an eye that is alerted to a deeper sense of awareness, one that employs more faculties other than just the cerebral, to sense and experience form, shape, texture, play of light, distance, connections and conversations between the photographs. Inner dialogue has taken over the role that commentary played in his previous work. In this recent collection of images entitled The Abstract Collection, the volume of the external world has been turned down in order that both the artist and the viewer can hear and feel the silence – a silence and stillness that have always been characteristic of Meyersfeld’s sensibility and aesthetic.

www.arts.uj.ac.za

This Market Photo Workshop Alumni project is a group exhibition that explores the public space in the city of Joburg through the lenses of migration, commuting and health. These dynamics showcase the transformation of this diverse city towards a socially integrated African city. The photographs represent a selection of images produced by students of the Market Photo Workshop during their classrelated projects between 2012 and 2016. Through U-Collaboration, the Market Photo Workshop partners with U-Care Medical Centre to promote emerging photographers and to give them the opportunity to exhibit to a larger public. The exhibition is being held at the U-Care Medical Centre at Park Station in Rissik Street.

This year’s Alumni Exhibition at the FADA Gallery honours artist and doctor Carol Hofmeyr, the founder of the Keiskamma Art Project Trust, a community organisation based in Hamburg that works to foster hope and offer support for vulnerable families, many of whom are affected by HIV/AIDS, in a rural area in the Eastern Cape. The Trust strives to address the challenges of widespread poverty and disease through holistic and creative programmes and partnerships. The Keiskamma Art Project later became the Keiskamma Trust inclusive of an Art, Health and Education Programme. In 2006 Helen Vosloo, one of the country’s foremost classical musicians, founded the Keiskamma Music Academy as the fourth Trust programme.

silver, gold, diamonds, pearls and other precious stones – as well as less traditional materials such as plastics and ivory. Craftsmanship is very important to me, and I handmake my pieces using traditional goldsmithing techniques. What is your inspiration? What inspires me is history: I love jewellery and other objects of material culture from all over the world and over the last few thousand years of civilisation. I particularly love ancient carved gemstones and the sentimental jewellery of the Victorian period – the more figurative, the better.

10 minutes WITH GERALDINE FENN Joburg contemporary jeweller Geraldine Fenn runs a successful studio and gallery called Tinsel in Risidale, where she creates and sells her eclectic pieces. We spoke to her about her passions, her inspiration and her jewellery Tell us about yourself. After completing a BA in Archaeology at Wits, I studied jewellery design at the tech in Durban. Then a few years ago I went back to Wits to

Tell us about your first jewellery collection. I’ve been making the pieces in my Gothic Collection since the start of my career: some pieces have a lot thrown at them and are fairly

kitsch – in the best way – while others are more restrained. Any other collections? There’s my Archaeology Series. For this I draw inspiration from ancient jewellery forms and motifs, taking impressions from old carved stones and cameos and casting them in silver to make jewellery that is richly figurative with a historical feel. What are you currently working on? My current work is all about construction: in the Rough Range I use sheets of wax to build the piece, which is then cast into silver, and I leave the surfaces quite rough. I’m playing around with very traditional forms in terms of the design, but reinterpreting them quite radically by using non-traditional ways of making the pieces. www.tinsel.co.za
