Editor’s Letter
I
can’t believe it’s the end of 2016! It feels like yesterday that I was writing my first Ed’s Letter of the year. It has been a year of ups and downs, and I know there are many people who are happy to say goodbye to the year that was. From the US elections to our very own State Capture Report, things seem rather bleak, however there have been positives too, like the fact that Joburg remains Africa’s most visited city, according to the 2016 Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index. We love happy local news! For me, 2017 holds many big changes. I have a baby on the way, so there’s that… We end the year off with a bang at Joburg Style with our Best Of issue and bonus 48-page Shopping Annual featuring
Joburg’s top malls as well as great yearround gift ideas. Our cover star, rap sensation Cassper Nyovest, talks about the importance of staying humble, and what he’s had to sacrifice to get where he is today. Our Subculture takes an energetic turn with a focus on the dance style, Pantsula and our Photo Essay, In Search Of, looks at Joburg’s partying youth culture (warning: not for sensitive viewers). We take a look at fashion designer extraordinaire Marianne Fassler’s latest collection, Tropic Thunder, at its best and we partnered with By Word of Mouth for our food feature to showcase the best of their three festive season menus. Mouthwatering to say the least. Photographer Channay Harvey captures the vibe of Maboneng for Cool District absolutely perfectly. In my opinion, it is one of our best yet. International Travel is a whirlwind 48-hour visit of the bustling city of Singapore and Eric Bornman writes about the joy of getting away from it all in Local Travel, Fly Where the Fishing Takes You. Travel Snippets provide you with some of the best festivals to attend around the country and where to stay while you’re there. As always, JList offers a comprehensive guide of what to do and where to go in the city, starting with our three-page Diary of events. Silly season is upon us and we’ve got the best hangover and long, boozy lunch spots. Feel like indulging? Visit one (or all) of the top
milkshake spots in Joburg and, if you’re looking for a fine meal in a fine spot, head to our pick of beautifully designed restaurants. Then, there are two pages filled with activities for you to do with the kids these holidays. So, until next year, have an amazing holiday and rest, you deserve it. Come back ready for an exciting 2017. Keep safe.

Cover Profile
Rapping and hip hop are synonymous with being a badass. Have you ever seen Ice-T smile? Nah. And I don’t think you ever will. Kanye West, despite being from a fairly privileged and educated background has achieved astonishing success and has a smoking hot wife but walks around like little Johnny Thundercloud OUR MAN CASSPER NYOVEST over here is one of the hottest artists on the continent right now, has an almost angelic smile, approaches life through faith and prayer and just won the MTV Africa Music Award for Best Live Performer. Yet, every now and again, they all feel the need to go walkabout over to the dark side and show us what the world expects from its rappers. Born Refiloe Maele Phoolo on the 16th of December 1990, Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ was #1 on the UK charts. It was the golden age of hip hop and the year it made its commercial breakthrough. His birthplace Montshiwa, Mafikeng is about 7,837 miles from the Bronx (New York) where the genre was born and was popularised by the gangster rappers of N.W.A, Public Enemy and many others. JOBURG STYLE: You’re building your career around the fact that your live performances attract sell-out crowds so this must be a significant award to win. What is it about performing live that gets you going? CASSPER NYOVEST: The crowd. I just love their reaction when they see me perform a certain song or do a certain dance move. I feed off the crowd’s energy when I perform. The more energetic they are, the more I give myself to them. How do you deal with recognition in public, fans who overstep personal boundaries, being scrutinised for things you say or do? Regarding recognition in public I just keep it cool. I keep it calm and I keep it moving. Fans who overstep boundaries are usually are dealt with by my team members who I am with. But when I am alone, I try to explain to them as calmly as possible that I am a human being before anything else. Over the years, I have learnt that the best way to deal with the media is to ignore them. I pay no mind to the media because it is not worth it. You started rapping in 2002, which was a huge year for guys like Eminem. HHP was recording his third album. Your genre was pumping. Who was your inspiration back then? HHP. Coming from the same neighbourhood and seeing him on TV and hearing him on radio to watching him perform to large crowds made me realise that it was possible for me to achieve the same too. Why did you choose Motswako as your genre? It was the genre that HHP chose and I followed suit. Back home it was the most popular genre. What is the deal behind your stage name? Casper the Friendly Ghost was my favourite cartoon when I was younger. I could relate so much to his character. The name Nyovest I made up when I was creating an account for Facebook. They required a name and surname to register.
How did you meet HHP? What was it like in the days of touring around with him learning the game? I met him at a show and he told me that he knew of me from his sister who I was working with. Touring with him was very insightful, I learnt a lot. What most artists learn in five years, I managed to learn in one year under the guidance of HHP. And now that you’ve achieved relative success here on the continent in a short space of time, won yourself a few awards and are now becoming an inspiration to the next wave of youngsters, anyone you’d like to single out who remains an inspiration? (Anyone doing some really groundbreaking things? Anyone you’d like to collaborate with?) Kanye West. He has been a great inspiration for my work for several years now. He is an artist who I would also like to collaborate with.
WHAT MOST ARTISTS LEARN IN FIVE YEARS, I MANAGED TO LEARN IN ONE YEAR UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF HHP
Hip hop history has its fair share of people not seeing eye to eye. Public taunts, rants, emotional reactions etc. Is that just show business or is it real? Any words of encouragement for your detractors? I will speak for myself. My situation was real, but I do not want to dwell too much on this topic as it’s in the past. You’ve said that you are overtaking those who went before you and those facts can’t be ignored. What will you

please. I want to thank every single one of my fans. Having made a bigger impact on South African music in the shortest space of time than arguably any other artist before him, Cassper is about seven and a half minutes into his 15 minutes of fame. A lot of talent comes unstuck at this point and, as we’ve seen, fame can be a real bitch. Keep it real Cassper, keep it friendly, perform your heart out and we’ll be rooting for you to go the full 15 and beyond.
do to stay on top? Keep working. Keep focused. Keep humble. Keep learning. Keep praying.
So what is it about your music that is different? I try and keep my music as authentic as possible. Do you think that coming from a rural town, having the balls to pursue your dream, coming to Joburg to make it big gives you more of a persona in the hip hop culture? In comparison to lets say a guy who lived in the burbs, went to top schools, colleges etc? Definitely. Rap music makes a big deal of money, women and flaunting success. Obviously its a huge business and you’re not going to last if you’re an idiot. What is this about for you? Its not only rap music. All genres around the world are like this. So, as for me, I take each day as it comes with new challenges. The media is going to report on your successes, but can turn on you in an instant when the shit hits the fan. What do you think of the media? I pay no attention to the media. What is your take on the fans? Do you exist because of them or are they here because of you? I exist fully because of them. They are the ones consuming the music on all platforms, they are the ones buying tickets to the shows. And they are the ones we try so hard to 18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

usa’s photographs focus on the social phenomena of black youths who identify with the predominantly white alternative culture and the parties that these groups attend. Through first-hand observation and intuitive documentation, Musa repositions his peers to negate the prevailing social stereotyping and inherent cultural preconceptions. Art writer and journalist Sean O’Toole describes Musa’s subjects as: “Soweto’s skinny jeans crowd; twenty-something black kids sloughing off the constraints of their assigned identities – Zulu, Xhosa, kwaito, hip hop, BEE, choose your prejudice – and doing things differently.”

Photo Essay
Arts correspondent Mary Corrigall links his photographs to ‘Generation Disappointment’, an age group whose raised and then unfulfilled expectations have left them disgruntled and confused, torn between the promise of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and the harsh reality of everyday life, as well as an increasing sense of abandonment and disillusionment with government and authority in general. Musa is both voyeur and participant, providing a unique and intimate view of his world. Collectively, these photographs reflect elements of self-portraiture and a singular view of a world in which the artist is personally immersed. Despite the subjective nature of these portraits, they remain distant and restrained – extending the reach and appeal of these

enigmatic images far beyond their local context. Musa is not a documentary photographer per se and his photographs tie in with the aesthetic and new generational trend of ‘wrong’ photography. Similar to the evolution of other art forms such as sculpture and painting, photography has moved on and strategies such as cropped images, blurred focus, off centre composition and other elements of amateur photography are commonplace today. These strategies add directly to the mood, mystery and intensity of his work. The attitude and spirit of youth culture almost demands an anti-formalist and laid-back approach. Informal snapshot photography has become part of everyday life and it is clearly affecting and challenging conventional views of fine art photography. 30 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

NOSTALGIA AND THE STORIES WE WANT TO TELL We all have a story we like to tell, like how I met Michael* at one of my favourite bars in town… Words Harvey Khumalo
hree years ago, to be precise. I was about to call one of the barmen to place my order using the last cents I had gathered when a man three times my size leaned over the bar table next to me. Quiet, massive and observant. The startling combination condemned me to silence.I was a fresh matriculant who had never endured the admiring eyes of another male. “Is this what courtship feels like?” I pondered, trying not to feel as though he could read my thoughts. He asked what I wanted to drink. “A glass of wine. White wine,” I responded with feigned confidence. I had never had a man buy me a drink before, but I instinctively knew that Michael had something to prove. He’s a popular businessman who doesn’t mind impressing teenagers like me. But, he says that I’m already too bright and cultured to fall for his charm. The barman slid a metallic bucket in front of me. A full bottle of sauvignon and a glass buried in ice. “I just never want you to worry about having a great time when I’m around. I’m Michael. Abuse my name at any moment you can find me,” he said as he walked away as though he never intended to know me. He has been blessing me ever since.
Big Read
What about the story about how I met Ayanda*? He was a little more gracious when he approached me not too long after I met Michael. “I think I might want to ask for your hand in marriage,” he said when he first introduced himself to me. Rather forward and ambitious, I thought to my annoyed, yet flattered self. We met on an infamous dating site after all. With not much faith to begin with, I watched our first dinner date turn into biweekly dining experiences all over Johannesburg. “I’ll pick you up,” gradually escalated to “I’ll send an Uber.” It was only a matter of time before swiping for exquisite meals graduated to running his platinum card to purchase for me what he called “fine” pieces of clothing. I recall speaking to him about the guilt and trepidation of our relationship. Well, at least I tried. “You’re right, babe. I have been taking advantage of the familiarity between us. I should let you do your shopping in peace without me,” he said. He’s been blessing me ever since. The story of Clive* and me is my favourite. He was an overwhelmingly simple boy who went to my rival school. We met during a chess tournament where I was paired with him during the final round. He was four years my senior, but age was nothing more than just a number to me. I beat him and I thought he would hate me. Instead, he congratulated me and asked that we stay in contact. I reinvented his sense of style, taught him how to court women, I encouraged him to get his driver’s licence before applying for any job and I taught him how to use his imagination as a way to deal with his depression. He has come so far. We’ve built a friendship out of enjoying each other’s achievements. He got a job at an accounting firm in the heart of Sandton last year. Since then, he has been splitting a small portion of his significant pay cheque with me
"IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SWIPING FOR EXQUISITE MEALS GRADUATED TO RUNNING HIS PLATINUM CARD TO PURCHASE FOR ME WHAT HE CALLED “FINE” PIECES OF CLOTHING"

every month. “I do not need financial support from you. I’m not your spouse or child, Clive,” I retaliate often. “But my joy is your joy, for you are like the brother I have never had,” he responds just as often. Clive has been blessing me ever since. I have three men who provide me with alcohol of my choice, exquisite food and clothes, and money each month. I have not been emotionally manipulated or sexually exploited by any of these three men. Yet, what do I call them? Are they my sugar daddies? Are they my blessers? Or did the divine universe bestow upon me three men who just want to see me happy and glowing? Should it offend someone that my army of materialistic donors and I could not be bothered about the moral mathematics of our respective relationships? The truth of the matter is that all relationships are transactional, regardless of what is being brought to the table by both parties. My intellect and emotional intelligence, empathetic nature and strong sense of self represent the currencies I use to negotiate relationships of these kinds. Their autonomous decisions to share their material gains with me is merely the cherry on top of the special bonds I have developed with Michael, Ayanda and Clive. These men are beautiful, scary and strange. These men simultaneously love from spaces of appreciation, lack and gratitude. These men dream, wish and fear. Most importantly, these are men who just want their stories to be heard. To be caught between the crossroads of human affection and material luxuries is a strange place to be. When the sun sets, we are merely human beings who love differently. * Names have been changed

LIGHT IT UP Joburg has always been a city for dreamers, entrepreneurs and rebels, and 130 years after the discovery of gold, nowhere is this more evident than in the downtown urban renewal. One such development is the ultra-trendy Maboneng precinct Words Jo Buitendach Photographs Channay Harvey

M
aboneng, which means ‘Place of Light’ in Sotho, is the brainchild of property company Propertuity and Joburg mogul Jonathan Liebmann. Opened in 2010, the area has grown rapidly and is now home to a vibrant array of art galleries, restaurants, bars, a hotel, offices and living space. Located on the eastern edge of the city in historic Jeppestown, the environs once housed a mine, later a residential neighbourhood and were more recently home to a number of car workshops and small factories. That is until Jonathan saw the undiscovered potential. Fast forward a few years and it’s now a fashionable precinct of converted industrial buildings, slick design, an artisanal market, quirky shops and stylish downtown living. Maboneng has so much on offer, and you will definitely need a few repeat visits to take it all in, but to get you started here’s a list of some favourite spots.
For foodies
Planning a Maboneng adventure? Go hungry and get ready to eat, eat, eat. We are huge fans of James XVI Ethiopian Restaurant. Set among olive trees, it’s the kind of place where even first time visitors are met with a warm hug. The local Ethiopian community can be found enjoying delicious injera flat bread and spicy wot stew. Make sure you don’t leave without trying a seriously potent Ethiopian coffee. Next stop on the culinary journey is Soul Souvlaki, which serves the most scrumptious lamb, chicken or bifteki in a pita, all from a converted shipping container. We also recommend the grilled haloumi plate; some of the best haloumi you’ll taste in the city.

MABONENG HAS SO MUCH ON OFFER, AND YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED A FEW REPEAT VISITS TO TAKE IT ALL IN, BUT TO GET YOU STARTED HERE’S A LIST OF SOME FAVOURITE SPOTS Looking for a quick bite? Try Eat Your Heart Out. This quirky little diner has fresh juices on offer and some really lovely Jewish-inspired food. Think kitka, bagels and totally indulgent latkes. Set in an old industrial building with exposed brick and roaring fires, Che Argentine Grill is the sort of place where you reserve a big table and plan a huge celebration with your nearest and dearest. The empanadas (traditional Argentinian pastries) are the perfect way to start your meal followed by some ojo di bife cooked on the grill. Canteen is casual, contemporary and has an extensive menu, perfect for a lazy Sunday lunch. Cocobel is a delightful old dessert truck, decorated with bright and cheerful hanging plants. Calling all coffee addicts
You won’t struggle to find a decent cup of coffee in Maboneng, but we recommend you start at Origin Coffee. Part of celebrated Cape Town coffee brand Origin, these guys take their coffee seriously. Revelry and fun
On a Sunday, Maboneng plays host to Market on Main, a bustling market that specialises in carefully curated local food and design
stalls. Joburg inhabitants flock to the area en masse to see and be seen, do a little shopping and taste the delicacies on offer. Joburg residents love a good rooftop, particularly if that rooftop includes some sundowners and a picturesque view. Maboneng’s top choice is The Living Room. This plant-filled, eco-friendly venue has great DJs and cocktails, and is the perfect place to enjoy a fun filled Sunday afternoon. Lenin’s Vodka Bar has a vast selection of vodka and vodka-based cocktails, suitably named after the KGB, the Kremlin and Chernobyl. This ‘revolutionary drinking joint’ (as it labels itself) also serves up delicious frozen vodka, which regulars can’t get enough of. Newly opened AGOG

Nine Barrels can be found on the ground floor and has a wide selection of wine and sparkling wine as well as a private tasting room. One floor up, AGOG Gallery is passionate about art and aims to connect artists and collectors. Art is everywhere in Maboneng, be it street art, public art or graffiti. Many top international and local artists have created

masterpieces on walls in the precinct, including American artist Shepard Fairey and Joburg local Nelson Makamo. The Cosmopolitan Hotel (est. 1899), one of Maboneng’s most iconic buildings, has recently been renovated and reopened. It is now home to HAZARD, a gallery that aims to showcase pan-African artists alongside international talent. he ground in Orange Farm is red, iron in the soil, and it’s everywhere. Right now it’s being kicked up into the air by a donkey cart carrying scrap metal; the men steering the carriage stop in the middle of the road to watch the pantsula dancers posed on the roof of the old taxi office building. The Hlaks Pantsula crew. In the 12 years they’ve been dancing, participating in the Red Bull Beat Battle was easily the biggest opportunity that they’ve had. The thing is, isipantsula’s glory days seem to be fading. To be fair, pantsula enjoyed a long run in the limelight. In the ‘90s, when the whole country was gripped by kwaito, pantsula dancing became an accessory to the mania. But the lineage and pedigree of isipantsula stretches way back, and you can trace its roots to the Drum generation of the 1950s and the first wave of African urbanisation.
GAINING DOMINANCE IN THE ‘70S, PANTSULA MADE A STEADY ASCENT FROM THE STREET STUDIOS OF DUST AND TAR INTO THE GLOBAL DANCE CULTURE Pantsula has been a major part of South Africa’s dance scene for several decades now. Gaining dominance in the ‘70s, it made a steady ascent from the street studios of dust and tar into the global dance culture. Its origins are difficult to trace. In the true nature of dance, it has appeared and reappeared over time as mutated versions of itself, found in the streets of many

Subculture sub-Saharan townships. Some say it’s a fusion of many traditional dance styles developed over time by migrant workers who laboured in the big cities of South Africa. Some say it sprang forth as a younger, more vibrant form of gumboot dancing. Some say it’s a traditional Mozambican dance, corrupted by the youth. Visibly, Orange Farm hasn’t moved too far from those days. Untarred roads. Hand built shacks. A lack of basic services. Still, a four-roomed RDP house booms house and kwaito into its surrounds, infecting innocent passersby with the groove. A crowd quickly gathers. Hlaks crew members Boyza, Khosie and Sipho shift the earth with hard tapping, heel-to-toe movements. Stomping the red dirt with synchronised tenacity. A ripple effect from crazy shuffling footwork, up to their hips, waists, shoulders and heads. Essentially, pantsula is non-verbal storytelling. Street sign language. S’camto body poetry. Very often, the crews will enact a funeral procession, a wedding party, a mugging on an unpoliced road, an arrest. These, unfortunately, are staples in the hood, conveyed satirically by the dancers. At times manic in pace, it’s all reckless swaying and schizophrenic stomping, crouching, spinning, and then, as if it were a completely different character, it slows into a lethargic legato. Tight. Leady. Rooted into the ground. Controlled. It is a tenuous balance between complete arrogance and shy naivety. A struggle between earthy heel-taps driven from the waist, and smooth shuffles and toe slides. A quiet shift, so subtle, but impossible to miss. “People think pantsula is dead, but we’ve been in the game for a long time now,” says Khosie. “It’s not the same though; all the kids want to dance to is isibujwa and hip hop. Pantsula is not fashionable anymore, but we love it. It’s what we know. It’s a classic.” Orange Farm, geographically, is a dry sliver of land between the south of Joburg and the Vaal. A no man’s land where the cultures of both 56 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
Subculture
the Vaal and Soweto fuse into something unique. Part urban, part rural. Hlaks uses this fusion and interprets it through their dance. “You see, the base of pantsula is is’pharaphara,” explains Sipho. “Wherever you go, whatever style of pantsula you see, the base element of is’pharaphara will always be there.” Is’pharaphara is a three-beat stomping and tapping motion that many believe evolved from the showy stylistics of Soweto’s train surfers. “Dancers then build their own identities around the base; we call these signatures,” adds Boyza. “The signatures that are popular in Soweto are different from those in the Vaal. We combine these signatures and create something new.” Many of the signatures are a depiction of everyday life: Galloping horse carts, chugging trains, stumbling drunks and kung fu movies. But pantsula gives as much as it takes. It has influenced local dance culture, with many of the easier signatures becoming dance staples on the street and in the clubs. Remember the twalatsa? It was an old popular street dance that looks exactly like the now famous Dougie – well, the twalatsa (and ergo the Dougie) was ripped wholesale from a pantsula signature, like ‘Roba letheka’ and ‘Sika lekhekhe’. And because of this influence on contemporary Mzansi dance culture, crews like Hlaks refuse to let pantsula die. They fully embrace their role as a bridge; connecting the Vaal and Soweto, the street and the studio. The retro and the new. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 59

T
hat’s Durban, bru. Buckle up. I’ll drive. For the next 48 hours, you’re doing Durban with me.
Day 1
6:30AM You’re refreshed. Having watched an epic sunrise on the inimitable Umhlanga Beach, you’ve downward-dogged and cobraposed your backaches away on those biscuittoned shores. A popular tidal pool and one of my favourite chill spots at Umhlanga Beach is Granny’s Pool. 8AM – 9AM You’re quite chuffed at the Vitality points you’ve earned after hitting the 5km Park Run at 8am, departing from the architectural beauté that is the Umhlanga Pier. It was voted ‘most beautiful pier in the world’ by CNN after being ‘discovered’ by one of its freelance writers. You’ve earned yourself the most delectable cappuccino and an even better view. 9AM – 10:30AM I’ve reserved our table at Lighthouse Café on the Umhlanga Promenade. Mosey on over to our spot on its raised terrace, soak in some rays and wait for your choice of brekkie and a cuppa. Lighthouse Café offers a variety of breakfast options, but I absolutely adore its avocado and chicken wrap with a side of shoestring fries. 10:30AM – 2:30PM What would you prefer? A hike through the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve? Strolling across a seemingly precarious but really quite stable wooden
bridge over the Ohlanga River, this hour-long hike will see you surrounded by lush greenery, birds and duikers. Or shall we go whaleand dolphin-watching? Let’s do both. The Umhlanga Ocean Charters (UOC) speedboat launches into prime dolphin- and whalewatching waters and is situated at Granny’s Pool. UOC is almost directly opposite the ever-so-posh Pearls of Umhlanga. 2:30PM – 4PM Famished after our hike and ocean-top safari, let’s grab a late lunch. I’m partial to fresh Asian flavours so Kung Thai, just a little walk up the road from the Promenade into the Umhlanga Village strip, is my choice. But maybe you’d prefer Greek? I have just the spot – Gazi! Traditional Greek fare that is absolutely divine. It’s right next to Kung Thai and you can enjoy al fresco lunching on the sidewalk at both places. Tip: You should order the mezze platter for two as a starter if you’re in a group of three to four people. 4:15PM Dessert is on Meridian Drive at Old Town Italy. It’s just up the road from Umhlanga Village, behind Gateway. We’re going for their ‘conuts’. You know, those popular sugar-coated ring doughnuts? Well these guys have taken the ring doughnut, re-shaped it into an ice cream cone and then serve it topped with your choice of ice cream. You’re welcome. 5PM - 7:30PM By this time you can choose to have a nap OR you can visit one of my
favourite and most reasonably priced spas in Durban - Fleur De Lis Spa situated at the Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga. Nothing sounds better than a full body massage after an action-packed morning. I especially enjoy its spa bath to drift away and relax. 7:30PM – 9:30PM Dinner is at Ile Maurice, a multi award-winning little French-Mauritian spot at McCausland Crescent in Umhlanga. It offers an elegant setting with a stunning view. Ask to be seated outside – it’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the Durban evening warmth. My favourite starter is their gratin de crabe. It is fresh crab meat
simmered in a light béchamel sauce served in its shell with chapelure (which is essentially bread crumbs) - I assure you, this simplesounding dish is divine. 11PM Sugar Reef social club at the Point Waterfront is a hot, stunning, brand new spot to channel your inner Tony Manero and dance the night away. (C’mon? Saturday Night Fever? John Travolta? Tough crowd.)
Day 2
8AM – 10AM I like to keep my options open and play it by ear – the key for me on a Durban Sunday is to go with the flow. I like to start my day with a gym session at the Virgin Active Kings Park or with a jog on the North Beach Promenade. Also known as the Golden Mile, the Promenade spans all the way from Suncoast Casino and stretches to uShaka Marine World. Breakfast when I’m in this neck of the woods is almost always at California Dreaming. 10:30AM – 12PM I love the outdoors, which is why I adore the Durban Botanical Gardens. The orchid garden is one of my favourite places and there is definitely a therapeutic magic about strolling on these lawns. I highly recommend you stop for a bite at the tea garden. 12:30PM – 3PM Lunchtime, and there are options galore! Mutton bunnies at Hollywood on Argyle Road; even their broad bean roti roll is sublime. Try Ethiopian food at Café Abyssinia on the old Cowey Road (now Problem Mkhize Road). Let your taste buds be transported to the land of injere (a traditional Ethiopian bread) and use it to soak up a delectable mix of bebere (spices) in various forms. You really should wash your food down with some traditional Ethiopian coffee. If you’re craving south Indian delights, do yourself a favour and pop into Mali’s Indian Restaurant on Goble Road. Order the chicken chettinad. It’s spicy and delectable in all the right places. Enjoy. Then you need the bee sting cake at Antique Café on Churchill Road in your life. It is heavensent and the best you’ll ever have. 3:30PM – 4PM Yes, yes the Rand to Euro is at an all-time low, and a trip to Italy may be a bit out of reach for most of us. But, I come bearing good news – the next best thing! A gondola ride in Durban with Zulumoon Gondolas at the Point Waterfront Canal. You can park at uShaka. 4:30PM I adore sundowners at the Panorama Bar at the Elangeni Hotel. It overlooks the Durban beachfront and they make an amazing mojito. This is THE PLACE to watch the sunset and wind down the day.
ALSO CONSIDER THE ROOF TOP NIGHT MARKET At Musgrave Centre takes place on 2 and 16 December. Enjoy delicious food, fabulous crafts and live music. How you define what recreation means to you is your business entirely. So are your travel preferences, how you like to rest and relax and blow off steam. Fly fishing adventures, particularly for trout, have become a favourite choice for vacationing and letting loose, as Eric Bornman recently found out

T
he new world since social media, more so than ever, is filled with opinion (called for or not), so whilst I cringe at how judgemental this sounds, I find the many ways of fishing quite boring (traditional static gear angling from the dusty shore of a dam), downright brutish (noodling – the primal act of wrestling giant flathead catfish out of muddy shallows with your bare hands) and, in many other cases, utterly laborious and just plain hard work. But before I upset a vast number of passionate vissermanne, let me at least offer an explanation. I say that if you are going to embark on the exercise of trying (against fairly stacked odds) to catch a fish, you might as well do it with a bit of style and pizzazz – unless you’re a subsistence fisherman and have to do it in order to live. So, for starters, as far as fly fishing ticks these boxes, history is on my side. The angling method of casting a fly was first documented in a 1613 poetical treatise by one of Shakespeare’s fishing buddies. As such, it is more than a technique; it is, in fact, so elegant that it incites prose. Fly fishing was also a major interest of the English nobility. I’m no snob but those old farts knew how to live it up and, along the way, invented a bunch of other things that totally changed the world: the telephone, the television, almost every modern sport including soccer, rugby and cricket, the steam locomotive and the World Wide Web. Based on
their innovative prowess, you argue against their choice of fishing technique at your own peril. Secondly, fly fishing for trout in particular (and the salmonid family as a whole) is part and parcel of a travel experience that takes you to regions where they prefer to live, generally speaking the most eyewateringly beautiful locations in the world. Think beautiful clear lakes on snow-capped mountains, little streams in wide open highland expanses and, a bit more artificially, the dams specifically stocked for the purpose. Even the most awful day wading up a clear mountain stream or rhythmically casting a fly looking out over a highland escarpment beats the best day at the bottom of a muddy bayou. I suspect that anglers, fly fishermen or otherwise, always enjoy the fishing, even more so when the catching is good, but it is the surroundings that feed the soul and rejuvenate the body. Furthermore, trout fishing has as its associated activities the enjoyment of a cosy lodge environment, in front of a warm fire after a day out in the water. There are some top-class establishments out there that play perfectly into the rich heritage and ambience of this pastime. And, based on my personal experiences, it’s great for the family too, especially if you’re after generating some Kodak moments with your kids. Landing a nice big one with my son or watching him catch his first one rates up there with my most memorable experiences.

remote spots in-between the reeds or those mysterious unreachable spots where the big fish hide. A simply magical area a couple of kilometres downstream is a picnic spot where your cares can melt away. No visit is complete without spending a day there chilling out. There is a section of river below the dam for the purist fly fishermen where frisky wild trout outwit even the most experienced campaigners as they wade their way upstream. A night sky this vivid is something us city folk rarely get to see in all its glory. Stargazers are, in fact, able to see (with the help of their equipment) neighbouring galaxies and other rare constellations. Conclusion: Nooitgedacht ticks all the boxes of a stylish adventure and is highly recommended. 013235 3185/ 1682 | www.nooitgedachttroutlodge.co.za
The trout fishing hotspots in South Africa include the well-known locations of the Mpumalanga Highveld towns of Dullstroom and Lydenburg, the eastern Free State gem of Clarens, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the lesser known (to ordinary South Africans) Griqualand East (Underberg region), which is considered big-trout country. We will eventually cover them all, but for now we’ll keep it close to home and hit the Highveld. Spekboom Valley in the Drakensberg Mountains of Mpumalanga, on the Finsbury Road outside Lydenburg, is a famous location and home to two of our featured destinations. If you want to be properly removed from civilisation, this is the spot, but if you melt down when there’s no network, beware.
Nooitgedacht Trout Lodge
The 1,200-hectare reserve houses a five-star lodge and a trout hatchery, which is handy because they stock their dams liberally. Tours of the hatchery offer something of educational interest for all ages amidst all the leisure. Nooitgedacht is the epitome of doing it style. The accommodation is plush, 10 spacious suites, including singles and family rooms. It offers full board inclusive of first class, hearty, home-cooked meals served in a beautiful, sunny dining room. Virtually every room has its own fireplace and the loungy nooks, huge farmhouse-style porch, library and pub are cosy. The entertainment lounge houses a rare, full size snooker table, giant wood-burning fireplace and another bar area for a couple of after-dinner drinks, a few tall tales and a large couch where you will happily fall asleep given half a chance. The fishing, of course, is simply fantastic. You enter the property by crossing a low-water bridge, a cascading weir and a couple of dams (that look big until you actually see their big one) on either side. Four kilometres of Spekboom River twines through the surrounding hills and cliffs, finally running into the big Nooitgedacht Dam where you can take a small boat out to the most amazingly 78 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Run. What a rare privilege to spend time in such a place. It has been designed with the single objective of experiencing exactly the type of rugged authenticity for which real travellers hunger. The two eight-sleeper pine cottages are homely and comfortable, serviced daily and allow for the freedom to live, roam, eat and drink unencumbered and on your own time. The Highveld can get bitterly chilly, even in summer, so whether you choose to relax and read beside it, or as night falls cook beside it, the fire is often at the centre of it all. The five subtly manicured kilometres of river frontage is the most beautiful I have ever seen, allowing generous access to stream runs, krantz pools, tight spots, deep water and rapids, but also areas anyone can get to. There are pools downstream where you would be forgiven for thinking you’re in another world altogether. Sitting beside one of these pools, deep and safe enough to swim in during summer, with a basket of goodies (and you know I’m thinking Champagne and oysters upon arrival, cheese and wine or just an ice-cold beer) is the kind of stuff you will never forget. When the entire river is stocked (there are times that specific dams only are stocked) walking, stalking and exploring this area is extremely special. Pancakes at the Cat & Cow, Tonteldoos
ALSO CONSIDER Make time en-route to stop in a place (calling it a town would be overkill) called Tonteldoos, 20km outside of Dullstroom, for lunch at The Cat & the Cow. Here you will find the most fantastic pancakes and the coldest beer in Mpumalanga. It is the most unexpectedly delightful spot where you can easily spend an entire lazy afternoon. Check in at Pendle Hill Dairy or Bergen Cheese to stock up on some quality fromage – an absolute essential accompaniment for those red wine nights once you’re at your final destination. Alternatively, if you fancy a wee dram, pop in at Wild About Whisky in Dullstroom. Milly’s (en-route to Machadodorp) is an institution as far as home-made everything, including the most amazing trout pies, is concerned.

For a taste of something completely different, you can explore Chinatown for cheap chic.

For dinner and drinks, take a taxi to Newton Circus, an enormous square (six times the size of Melrose Arch), which is home to more than 400 bars and restaurants. You can choose anything you feel like eating, from sate bars to Thai, Indian, Chinese… the choice is endless. Once you’ve found what you’d like, sit in the middle of the square with your Peking duck, seafood oriental, Singapore crab or dim sum, and wash it down with a craft beer, or something soft.

The selection is wide-ranging and includes everything from Hong Kong barbecue baby ribs, to sliders, Moroccan lamb koftas and mushroom arancini. 011 326 6984 | www.lopulence.co.za

LIGHTING CONSULTANTS Lighting technology is forever evolving and developing … and at a vast rate, with hundreds of new products being introduced into the market place annually. Energy saving lamps and LED are very much the trend currently and although they are cost effective, they provide their own application challenges such as which wattage should be applied to achieve the correct visibility and effect. A good lighting design practice integrates the art and science of lighting beyond that which can be achieved with standard everyday light fittings. Lighting is very much a partner to architecture and the environment – it fills by complimenting the form, creating dynamics, mood and improved visibility. With the correct use of lighting, a space is changed, electrical and environmental costs are reduced, work productivity increased and risks due to poor visibility reduced. An experienced lighting specialist understands this and continues to seek a further understanding of lighting and the trends therein, in order to satisfy and provide the correct solution and outcome. For 25 years lighting has been our passion. We have loved light with the sole vision to provide the best possible technical advice to individuals and companies seeking to improve their environment with lighting. Our product ranges include: lighting, automation and switching. Our services include project follow-through from conceptualization, budget development as well as onsite supervision. Located at The Zone @ Rosebank, News Café’s flagship store was a finalist in the prestigious Restaurant & Bar Design Awards held in London in September. JEEP WARRIOR RACE
Warrior and Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) in general has become huge. The organisers lay out three courses of aboutw 5, 10 and 17km respectively, all interspersed with boot camp-type obstacles you have to successfully navigate in order to complete the race. It’s so popular because it’s a great way to keep fit and stay in shape for those who aren’t that keen on simply standing in a gym lifting weights or are bored with single discipline activities like running.
ENERGIZER NIGHT TRAIL RUN SERIES
The Energizer Night Trail run series offers runners a monthly night run on suburban golf courses. Runners are guided by reflectors laid out at 10m intervals along the race trail. Entrants light up this course with their powerful Energizer (LED) vision headlights. Despite their reputation as pristine, manicured environments, golf courses still have plenty of dips, ditches and obstacles to overcome, so visibility is key. www.energizer.co.za
SUP YOGA
It’s also a wonderful team exercise in which anyone can participate. Each event has new challenges with bigger and better obstacles, keeping participants guessing, like the infamous Mud Monster, a 100m stretch of mud riddled with 3m humps and 3m dips athletes have to navigate, or the Tower of Rage, a 6.3m platform athletes need to jump off into a pool of water. There are eight races that take place throughout the year around the country. www.warrior.co.za
Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga Sessions take place every Saturday morning at Emmarentia Dam. Each session starts with short instructions on how to stay stable on the boards, including a short paddle to the other side of the lake. The SUP boards are then anchored together to begin a 60-minute yoga practice suitable for all levels. The best part is the wonderful relaxation at the end of the yoga session, lying on your back floating on the board. www.yogaworks.co.za
URBAN FITNESS OUTDOOR SA
Urban Fitness Outdoor SA offers you a range of health and fitness services that will help you get ready for summer and reach your goal of obtaining that dream body you’ve always wanted. Plus, your first class is free. www.urbanfitness.co.za www.joburgstyle.co.za | 159

SECRET SUNRISE
In the words of the people at Secret Sunrise: “Secret Sunrises are a gathering of like-minded individuals who are not scared of radical self-expression, movement, love, connection… and to make the time to celebrate the rising sun.” Secret Sunrise venues are kept a secret until 24 hours before the event, which happens every two weeks. This gives you just long enough to plan your time and a possibly crazy outfit (the theme is always different). On the day of the event, you’ll receive a set of Bluetooth headphones and then you dance, move, jump up and down and just let loose. www.secretsunrise.com
PIRATES 21K
Commonly known as ‘Joburg’s Toughest 21,’ the Pirates 21K takes place at the beginning of each year and is a highlight on the city running calendar. So, are you tough enough? Or do you know anyone who is? The race follows a circular route, past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill and back again. The first half has three challenging hills, the first starting after one kilometre and then undulating with two more climbs, the last peaking at the King of the Mountain point at about 14km. The downhill after that is fast, enabling runners to pick up time. The start and finish are at the Pirates Club. It’s a great time out for runners and spectators alike, with refreshments and fun at the club afterwards. www.pirates21.co.za
MUSHROOM FARM GREEN OUTDOOR GYM
Okay, so working out indoors can be a bit tedious. Space is limited as it’s overcrowded, there’s no fresh air or scenery – so, if you’re looking for that gym experience out in the open, then be sure to head down to the Mushroom Farm Park Green Gym! This outdoor gym offers equipment for leg presses, chest presses, sliding, stepping and parallel bars to do some lifting. NOTHING CAN GROW WITHOUT WATER Not the economy. Not the environment. Not your kids. It is time to start using water wisely
DESPITE SOME GOOD RAINS, DROUGHT CONDITIONS ARE STILL BEING EXPERIENCED... The following are some Water Wise tips: • Monitor your water bill for unusually high use, which can indicate a leak. • When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. • Replace the shower head with a water-efficient model. Shower for 5 minutes or less. • While showering, collect water in a bucket and use it in your toilet cistern or the garden. • Consider water and energy efficient appliances. • When you save water, you save money on your utility bills too. • Wash dark clothes in cold water to save both on water and energy.
• Report broken pipes, open hydrants and wasteful sprinklers to the property owner or your water provider. • While staying in a hotel or even at home, consider reusing your towels. • Re-route your grey water to trees and gardens. • Install covers on pools and check for leaks around your pumps. • Don’t leave the tap on while washing hands or plates and brushing teeth. Follow the 3 R’s of being Water Wise: • Reduce your daily water use. • Reuse water where possible. Most tap water can be used at least twice. • Repair leaking pipes, toilet cisterns and taps. Inspect your water meter and carry out a water audit to identify water that may be leaking without you knowing it.

The Last Word
10 MINUTES
WITH CHRISTIAAN SCHOLTZ Our stock comes from all over South Africa from people who are moving houses or emigrating, people’s estates and sometimes even old hotels and museums. We look for quirky things, too, like old pharmacies, where we can sell old glass bottles, jars, etc. Luckily we don’t get many fakes. On the furniture side of things, it’s too expensive to make products nowadays compared to what it was 100 years ago. So, furniture is difficult to fake. But, there is obviously modern furniture compared to old furniture. There are four or five of us here and between us we have 100 years’ experience in the trade, so we can usually tell if we’re being duped.
CHRISTIAAN SCHOLTZ JULIA RICE CHATS TO OLD JOHANNESBURG WAREHOUSE OWNER CHRISTIAAN SCHOLTZ, ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR ANTIQUES AND WHY MORE PEOPLE SHOULD SHOP AT AUCTIONS
We hold antique auctions once a month, right here at the warehouse, and sell everything from books and porcelain to art, collectibles, furniture, vintage cars and toys. I worked in a retail antique shop for 20 years and two years ago started Old JW. The warehouse used to be my restoration and storage place and we renovated it into an auctioneering venue. I’ve always been interested in antiques. My grandparents were antique dealers and my ex-wife’s parents had an antique shop in Stellenbosch. Throughout my adult life I’ve been interested in antiques and art as well as buying and selling it. 176 | www.joburgstyle.co.za
I’m passionate about Afrikaner furniture. This is 19th century furniture made in South Africa using indigenous woods like yellowwood and stinkwood. I also love retro and well-designed furniture. I’m passionate about everything in this business, really. It can be a piece of silver or jewellery, I like everything. I’m on a permanent treasure hunt, always hoping to find something special. So, my work is constantly on my mind. People are generally scared of attending auctions, and there really is no need to be. I think people have a preconceived idea that auctions are scams or are unaffordable. And they’re neither. We’re cheaper than furniture shops by a mile, plus you’re getting better quality. We get very good prices for the clients, so it’s also a good place to sell your items. Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of younger people attending our auctions and we always try to make them fun and interesting. We get two types of clients, private clients who collect for themselves, and then there are the professional buyers – antique dealers, shops, interior designers. We sell about 80 percent of our stock every month, so we have a very high turnover. The private buyers will pay the most for an item, but the professional buyers will buy more items. You have to have a balance between the two. www.oldjw.co.za
