t’s all very artsy fartsy at the Joburg Style headquarters. In the lead-up to this, our Arts & Culture issue, we’ve collected one or two more paintings, taken some funky Latin American dance classes (our publishing director did), and attended some over-thetop, creative fashion shows (that was me). During varsity days, this time of year was always considered fun. Exam-free, care-free drama students put on their plays, and the fine art students exhibited their magnificent work in the student art gallery. Joburg has

a similar feel. For the next three months the Highveld calendar is jam-packed with foodie, arts and culture, music, dance and city festivals – all explained in our 72 hours in Joburg pages. What better way to represent the arts than with a Hollywood A-lister? Egoli-born Sharlto Copley graces our cover and gives us an EXCLUSIVE! interview on what Joburg means to him, his style, and what he’s up to at the moment. We also spoke to award-winning local musicians Mi Casa, renowned photographer Jodi Bieber, accomplished painter Adriaan Boshoff Jr, and up-and-coming sculptor Lehlohonolo Mkhasibe. Changing the world through art is our Big Read feature about the Living Arts Emporium who’re quickly, and wonderfully, changing the way we view art. Our fashion spread will have you look twice, three times, and maybe even four. It’s edgy, chic, sleek, black and white; polar opposites working beautifully together. Anne Dolinschek takes us on a journey through Chiang Mai Thailand, St. Petersburg Russia, and Paris France, as she discovers the world’s top arts and culture cities. I head to Paris with more of a local slant: read what I got up to in the small Free State town of Parys. Our JList section has everything you need and more to get ready for the imminent warmer

HARLTO COPLEY FIRST BURST ONTO OUR SCREENS AS WIKUS VAN DER MERWE

in Neill Blomkamp’s critically acclaimed movie District 9. Who can forget the poignant last scene when Wikus, with flower in his hand, turns into a Prawn? It was this brilliant portrayal that has made Sharlto a household Hollywood name. And, although he’s a rather big deal now, he hasn’t forgotten his South African roots, and his down-to-earth manner and quirky personality are a breath of fresh air in this often egocentric industry.

Where would you like to live permanently and why? I would love to be able to live in Cape Town. It’s my favourite city in the world. I grew up in Joburg and spent my teen and young adult years there, so I always say Joburg is where my soul lives. pay cheque is going to come from. So if You can take the man out of Joburg but you’re asking “Did I go and splash out you can never take Joburg out of the on anything after District 9?” the answer man [laughs]. It’s true though. Joburg would be no, I was too old and wise for informs me as an artist and my two that by the time it happened. favourite films I’ve done, District 9 and Chappie (releasing March 2015), were What is, so far, one of the most both filmed there. The nature of our unforgettable moments in your career? industry is such that I can never stay too I would definitely say attending the long in one place. I really do lead a kind Academy Awards with District 9 was of gypsy life. The blessing in that is I get one of the highlights. I was extremely to live and work in different countries and grateful to be there, and had one of the experience different cities and cultures. best nights of my life on one hand, but on the other hand I couldn’t help feeling What do you consider your greatest a little uncomfortable with the level of achievement? Career wise I would definitely say self-importance some people have in the District 9 and getting Wikus van der Merwe into the industry. There was a huge police presence pop culture around the world. A crew member on my current and chicken wire-style fence going down film in Mississippi recently told me that his friend always dresses an entire road keeping fans away from up as Wikus for Halloween. It turns out that he’s a pretty common Halloween costume us. It reminded me of something out of in America. Poor Wikus probably wouldn’t even know what Halloween is because we don’t really District 9. It is the kind of place where you celebrate it in South Africa [laughs]. But it is one example of many of how the character has see people wearing half a million dollars travelled throughout the world. I can be in Russia, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Spain or London and worth of jewellery around their necks people know Wikus and D9, which is pretty cool. while talking about bringing fresh water to starving kids in Africa. I admire their Did you ever think Wikus would become a household name? No, certainly not growing up with sentiment and efforts, but simply cannot all the Van der Merwe jokes [laughs]. I had known Neill Blomkamp for a long time and I always felt help notice how much of a bubble they are that he was going to be a director who could make commercial, internationally successful content. So living in and the irony of the example they when I heard he was making District 9, with Peter Jackson producing, I was extremely confident that are setting. Our business sells ideals and the film would be a success. I knew that South Africans would respond well to Wikus because the values to the masses, and I often wonder crew loved watching me improvise different takes on set. But I will never forget watching District 9 if anybody stops to think of the examples for the first time with American movie fans at Comic-Con in San Diego – all my confidence drained we are setting and the impact of those from my face as I sat there wondering if they could even understand his accent. It was only when examples on societies around the world. they stood up and clapped at the end of the film, and then mobbed Neill, that I knew we had a shot at real success. What are you most proud of and why? I am proud of the fact that in some What did you buy with your first pay cheque? And what was it for? I am very conservative with small way I helped South African media money. I have worked essentially for myself in my own company since I was 19 years old, and my and culture get a little closer to having whole life I have been in an industry that is very fickle and where you never know where your next a permanent place on the international

stage. The only other South African film that ever made any kind of wide-scale commercial impact on the world stage was The Gods Must be Crazy in the 80s (which happens to be the first movie I ever saw in a cinema). Sometimes young South Africans will come up to me and say: “You made me proud to be South African.” That is the greatest compliment I ever receive, and it’s not even about me. It’s not saying how amazing I am or how talented I am, but that I actually had a small impact on some young people in this country. When I was growing up in South Africa it was hard to be proud of the country – growing up we always aspired to be more like Americans or more like the English or more like anybody except South Africans. We especially did not want to identify with anybody like Wikus van der Merwe. What do you most value in your friends? I value their loyalty, love, honesty and the fact that they’re willing to put up with my flaws and my faults. I have a very small circle of friends, most of whom I have known since childhood. I value these relationships tremendously.

spectacular action sequences you have ever seen. I am currently in a small town in Mississippi shooting The Hollars, an American family comedy with John Krasinski, Charlie Day and Anna Kendrick. We’re having a lot of fun. Who is the best character you’ve played? Definitely Wikus van der Merwe in District 9, but Murdock in The A-Team runs a close second. When you’re in Joburg, where is your favourite place to go out? Well, I am a Sandton boy originally so I usually go out in Sandton. Ever since I left Joburg in 1997, the place has changed and grown so rapidly that every time I come back there are new places to go to. While we were living in Joburg shooting Chappie, the other cast members and I often went to the Morningside Shopping Centre. There are some great restaurants there. It is also just up the road from my old school, Redhill. Back in the old days nobody used to go to that centre but they have done it up really well in recent years.

If you could change one thIng about yourself, what would It be? I wIsh I could get myself to stop thInkIng. my mInd Is always goIng. I do try to medItate sometImes but I’m not very good. I would lIke to lIve more In the present moment.

What is your life motto? I don’t have a single life motto and there are many principles that I try to live by. Most come through some kind of spiritual tradition. One of my favourites is that in any situation, at any given moment of your life, the nature of the universe is such that you’re always being supported and challenged at the same time. Usually we can only see the good or the bad in the situation. We only see one side of the coin but there are always two.

What attracts you to a specific movie role? It is first and foremost a gut instinct, a gut reaction to the character. I am usually looking for characters that I believe I can make different and interesting and entertaining to watch for the audience. But there are other considerations. Probably the next most important one being who the director is. For example, I took Oldboy purely for the chance to work with Spike Lee.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Peace. For me the idea of happiness in the traditionally used sense is usually a short-lived, fleeting high. There are always highs and lows in life. Usually the bigger the highs the bigger the lows. I am interested in finding the peaceful middle ground and trying to live there as much as possible.

What is your most marked characteristic? Within the Hollywood community, probably my South African accent. To date I have never done a film using my own natural accent and dialect, so when I show up at meetings people often have no idea what I sound like in real life – and those that know me don’t hear people like me very often [laughs].

What films are you working on at the moment? I have just finished shooting Chappie in Johannesburg. It was a great experience and my third film with Neill Blomkamp. It was my first motion capture performance – I play the central character, Chappie, who is a robot that speaks with... Well, I will keep his accent secret for now, but I can assure you, you have never heard a robot speak with this accent in a major summer blockbuster film [laughs]. I wore a grey suit on the set and the animators animate over my movements. I was interested to see how much of me and my performance would be left in the robot after the process was completed because there is such a heavy reliance for an actor on his physical appearance. I have to say I am astounded by how much of my original performance is in Chappie. It has been like giving birth to some new kind of being and it was a really rewarding creative experience. Chappie also stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel. I also recently finished up the last week of additional shooting on an action movie called Hardcore that we shot in Moscow for three months last year. It was definitely the most original and experimental film I have ever made. It is shot from a first person POV – very much like a firstperson shooter video game. The whole movie was filmed on a Go-Pro camera. It is going to be something of a cross between a movie, a video game and a roller-coaster ride in the cinema, and has some of the most

Copley has recently been named as the Jaguar brand ambassador for South Africa. Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa is proud to announce their formal relationship with Copley. When away from the Hollywood cameras and back on home soil, he’ll now be found driving a Jaguar. “Sharlto is a great example of a local star doing great things on the global stage,” said Peter Biven, Marketing Director for Jaguar Land Rover SA & SSA. “He makes Jaguar locally relevant while enjoying international success – quite similar to his international success from a local footprint.” Copley and Jaguar’s partnership has the potential to typify continued achievement as well as providing a platform to showcase some the world’s finest and most exclusive vehicles. “I'm very proud to be associated with Jaguar,” said Copley. “Their new range of vehicles represent a new era for this classic, exceptional brand – comprehensively closing the door on the idea that a Jag is 'your grandfather's car'. It has become a very sexy, very cool brand and the F-TYPE Coupé is one of the most exciting and exhilarating cars on the road today.” "The F-TYPE Coupé combines high-tech innovation with raw power. It's a sexy, stylish and an utterly thrilling car to drive," said Copley. Copley will be driving a Jaguar F-TYPE in and around South Africa throughout the year alongside partner and international supermodel Tanit Phoenix. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 21

It was a chance meeting that brought South Africa’s darling Afro-Pop band, Mi Casa, together in 2011. Duda, the band’s pianist and DJ, was playing at a rooftop party in Sandton when Joao ( J’Something) and Mo-T gatecrashed the party and joined him on stage. This little stunt had a potential to end disastrously, because the artists had never shared a stage together before. However, it developed into something beautiful, more beautiful than any of them could have ever imagined. When they went home that night, they all knew their lives would never be the same again. A band had been formed, albeit it had no name yet. Even though critics quickly filed the band under the Afro-Pop banner, it’s hard to ignore the diversity of their musical finesse. Elements of house 22 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

and Latin music can be detected in their tunes. It’s the combination of these two components that inspired the trio to name the group Mi Casa, Spanish for ‘my house’. In the long list of the group’s accomplishments, Mi Casa recently clinched a deal with Mini Cooper as their brand ambassadors. The trio joins other heavyweight artists like DJ Fresh, Euphonik and Goldfish. “This partnership has always been our dream, but we had to build our credibility first before we could approach the company,” says J’Something, the band’s lead singer. “The partnership is only a few months old, but it’s proving to be a beast.” The band just tied up an 18-country African tour. One would argue that this is perhaps the highlight of their career, but they insist they will not rest until they have done a world tour and can count a few Grammys under their belt as part of their achievements. Mi Casa is currently working on the second part of their African country tour; this will include a 22-city expedition of the continent. It’s not uncommon for young and gifted artists to emerge out of nowhere and do incredible things, before fizzling out as quickly as they arrived. So, what is their strategy for staying current and relevant? “We strive to make good music. We believe strongly that we as human beings were never destined to arrive but to continue striving to be better than yesterday. So we will continue trying to be a better Mi Casa than the day before.”

Cover Profile

Adriaan Boshoff Jr. is the son of one of the greatest artists that South Africa has ever produced, Adriaan Boshoff. As an impressionist, he followed the likes of Monet and other greats of this movement. There are some that believe that the quality of his work and his technique in fact surpassed them, but due to the isolation of South Africa at the time, his work hasn’t been internationally recognised to that degree. One of his greatest works, however, is the legacy that lives on in his son Adriaan As humble a person as you’ll ever meet, you’d never perceive this gentleman to have as much talent as he does or that he comes from such famous stock. Society is filled with second generations that ride the coattails of famous parents. Not Adriaan . There are many that are needlessly waiting for him to paint like his famous father but he believes without a doubt that his dad wanted him to follow his own path, find his own style and subject matter, and not to simply copy him. You’re the son of a very famous artist, and you are an artist yourself wanting to carve your own way. How did it all start for you? I grew up with art. Of my father’s three children I was the one who could draw, so he taught me how. My dad taught me that the world is open and that you can paint anything you want as long as you do it tastefully and sound from an artistic perspective. I want to technically paint LIKE my dad did but I don’t want to paint WHAT he painted. He appreciated the fact that I saw something different to what he saw in his work, and so I paint things that I’ve experienced, not what he did. What I paint has grabbed me on some level, it has inspired me and that is what he taught me. It’s pointless to paint what others see. I eat, live and experience what I paint. That is what I respected about him. I started off as a framer but I painted with my dad. I felt that the weight of expectation lifted when he passed away and that my time had come. I was 40 when I started. He was also a late starter and I think that it’s a good thing.

Many young guys don’t have an appreciation of what it takes or a strong enough work ethic. Being an artist is not about sitting down and painting pictures. You end up disconnecting from the world because when I go out I am seeking. Two weeks before my dad died he looked at one of his paintings and said to me that he still had so much to learn. That sense of humility is obviously something you got from him. How does it contribute to your work? Art can bite you. It has the ability to totally floor you just when you think you know it all. It can eat you alive and make you feel alive all in one. It can’t just be about sales. Yes, we must all pay bills but the joy for me is in others enjoying my work. What do you feel about the commercial side of the art world? I paint something once, because I put everything into it, so when it’s done it’s done. People nag me to paint something a second time but I feel it’s unfair to people who want to buy something unique. I feel this respect for the art is what lacks in the art world and this is often to my detriment. I saw in my dad a longing, an ongoing search to be a serious artist. He once took a pot of daisies and made 400 sketches of it from all angles to understand the pot. I get angry when people simply copy work, because there is no value it in.

DOES FINE ART HAVE A FUTURE? IT DOES BUT IT’S DYING SLOWLY. THE TRADITIONAL STYLE, IN ANY CASE. THERE ARE MANY HIGH-VOLUME GUYS BUT I WANT TO APPLY 100-YEAR-OLD TECHNIQUES TO MODERN DAY THEMES.

You paint from an image in your mind, not a visual example. What is your favourite thing to paint? Anything with a story and a bit of fantasy. That’s why I paint the bikers and their girls. There’s an element of fantasy and romance in it that was perfectly captured in a story told to me by the widow of a pastor. She bought a painting of a really bad-ass biker and his chick. She told me that there was once a biker on the scene before the pastor’s time and this made her wonder what would have happened if she got on his bike with him. She made a connection in my work and there was a communication between us because of it. The real bikers do what they want and the doctors or business men that buy the biker paintings fantasise about that life. That’s what I like doing; connecting people to a fantasy. A pearl of wisdom for aspiring artists? Work hard and sketch; don’t paint, sketch. Show the world what is beautiful to you and don’t confuse yourself with what others are doing. Make your subject yours. It’s your life’s work, go for it full tilt. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 23

The first camera Jodi Bieber ever held in her hands was her father’s. He gave it to her to take on her backpacking travels around Egypt, Israel, Eastern Turkey and Europe for 10 months. She professes that the photographs were not any good, but the bug bit her hard. Since then, she’s relentlessly pursued her passion for photography. She studied photography at the Market Photography Workshop. After completing the course she was chosen to participate in a photographic training programme at The Star newspaper. After her training, Jodi went on to photograph some of South Africa’s pivotal events, such as the 1994 elections, however it was her personal projects which fast-tracked her career to greater heights. She received an opportunity to participate in the World Press Master Class in Holland. From there she worked on assignments for prestigious publications such as the New York Times Magazine. Over the last 20 years, her work

has been exhibited all over the world, in museums, galleries and group exhibitions. These covetable achievements did not quench Jodi’s thirst to become the best in her field. Some of her personal projects include Soweto and Real Beauty. These projects goes against stereotypes usually portrayed. Jodi says her journey hasn’t always been a walk in the park and blatantly refuses to classify herself as an artist. She says, that staying on top of her craft can be challenging. Her line of work has not been without a fair share of trials, tribulations and triumphs. “I recently received a letter from a woman in Pakistan stating that she saw one of my pictures and it inspired her to become a photographer. It’s things like this that keep me motivated.” Jodi has three published books: Between Dogs and Wolves - Growing up with South Africa, Soweto and in the last month Real Beauty. They can be bought at David Krut Book Shop and on Amazon. Her next exhibition in the coming weeks will be at The Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney.

Lehlohonolo’s love for art kicked in when he encountered a pair of izimbatata – traditional shoes made from rubber. The shoes are worn at traditional ceremonies. He was fascinated by the amount of detail that’s put into the making of these shoes. He found himself constantly baffled by the zigzag triangular patterns and how they’re crafted by using old tyres. This encouraged Lehlohonolo to start collecting tyres from the dumps of Emndeni, Soweto, where he was born. When he started collecting these, the only thing he had in mind was to make his own shoes, but fate had other plans for him. “I saw tyres lying around forming different shapes.” The whole idea of making izimbatata flew out the window, and new ideas came to mind. He started making chairs, hats, coffee tables and life-size drawings, all fashioned out of tyres. “My work is a combination of my life’s journey, and at times highlights social ills.” Lehlohonolo attributes his love for art to his uncle. “When I was much younger, my uncle would always assist me with drawing projects.” This awoke his creative side and he started entering art competitions, each

time coming out on top. One occasion he remembers vividly is bagging the Pikitup drawing competition prize for his school. “It was to encourage learners to clean up and brighten their environment.” The winners were also required to draw on the company’s trucks. It’s feats such as these that compelled Lehlohonolo to pursue a career in art, and perhaps what made him realise this was more a calling than it was coincidence. Today he holds an Art Diploma from the Funda Community College. He specialises in an art form called I’mbatata Mdwebo, which employs a technique he calls Imabhondobhondo. This method consists only of tyres, nails and wood. He is also one of the founding members of Ubuhle Bobuntu, an initiative that markets artists and grooms them to reach the best of their potential. Through art exhibitions they are able to bring the necessary exposure to their works. It was through this initiative that he was chosen by Red Bull to make a logo using white - wall rubber tyre material. With the other members they educate youth about using art, not just for commercial purposes but as a form of recycling too. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 25

RAGGA

BOMB Hanro Havenga graduated less than two years ago, but he’s fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the photography sphere. Ragga Bomb, his best project to date, was commissioned by Egg Films

H

anro Havenga graduated from Vega School of Branding with an Advanced Certificate and National Diploma in Photography. He has since worked on some interesting projects such as BestRand, a photographic project based on the West Rand, and the concept of Afrikaans Amerika, which looks at the American influence on Afrikaans sub-culture. Another one of his remarkable projects is 500; this saw him taking random portraits of people he came across on his travels. He’s also done work with performing artists such as the band Desmond & The Tutus. Ragga Bomb is a strange set of photography; it’s beautiful, with an element of darkness that is hard to ignore. It was shot for American-based artist DJ Skrillex. The musician is no stranger to things that are out of the ordinary. Skrillex is ranked as one of the best paid DJs in the world and specialises in Electronic Dance Music (EDM). He’s also responsible for the popularisation of dubstep, a genre of music that emerged in the late 1990s in South London. “This shoot had a very strong and new approach; it was fresh and surreal,” says Hanro. This series of photographs is one of Hanro’s most popular projects to date, and rather unexpected. He was at a wedding shoot when he met Egg Films director Terence Neale. They spoke about working together on future projects, but Hanro never thought it would be so much sooner than he’d anticipated. “It was a last-minute thing, but a great opportunity.” Terence, in turn, was tracked down by Skrillex’s record label based on the work he codirected for the band Die Antwoord. The images, which were shot in the dilapidated parts of Joburg such as Hillbrow, Joburg CBD and Alexandra, show a very different side of the city. “Ragga Bomb, albeit shot in the most shady parts of town, adopted a positive direction.” Smoke and fire was crucial in setting the tone, but the locations needed very little dressing. The characters in the images were cast based on the energy they naturally possessed, a trick that has obviously paid off handsomely, as they stand out in the images. Those who’ve witnessed Skrillex play live, say his music is the kind that makes thousands of people swoon with a dreamy fervour, the kind that can only be witnessed at spiritual awakenings. If the 24,638,983 YouTube video views are anything to go by, then the artist is really is gifted. And they couldn’t have chosen a better photographer to work with. – Nwabisa Ngumbela

Changing the world Art movements have become a huge global trend. They’re made up of collective titles given to artworks and artists that share the same creative ideals, styles and time frame. THROUGH ART

alking into the Living Arts Emporium (LAE) workshop at Ellis Park Stadium, you know instantly that you’ve stepped into an artists’ workshop. There are life-size paintings lying haphazardly around the hall, works in progress, and some complete masterpieces too. LAE was founded over a year ago by Conrad Bo to promote contemporary art made in Africa by promising and talented young artists. “The venture was not planned. I was working at a run-down building in Maboneng when some artists came looking for space and LAE was born,” says Conrad. He also happens to be the godfather of two art movements: Superstroke and Superblur. In the former, paintings and sculptures are executed using expressive, sometimes even violent, brushstrokes on parts of the painting and on the surface. “When mediums such as pens and pencils are utilised, they should be used in a manner that’s overly expressive to be considered Superstroke.” There are barcode lines visible throughout the paintings that employ this method. Subject matters such as Africa, light, dark, life and death are encouraged, and collages, stencils and calligraphy can be used for impact. Superblur, on the other hand, refers to a method of creating art using the definition of the word ‘blur’. It focuses largely on making the object or classification of the art unclear or less distinct, and pays great attention to elements that cannot be heard or seen clearly. “In these techniques the abstract barcode is the symbol of the Superblur Art Movement, just like the cube can be seen as the symbol for the Cubism Art Movement,” explains Conrad. The barcode is important because it distinguishes Superblur paintings from other art movements such as Neo-Expressionism. The blurry photograph plays a big role in the execution of the Superblur Art Movement. LAE is the home of many incredibly gifted young artists. One such creator is Ayanda Nkosi, who specialises in what she’s dubbed Modern Africanism. This is achieved by marrying Superstroke – geometric shapes, plus signs and primary colours – and Superblur. “This is the kind of art that encourages the viewer to stop, observe and think,” says Ayanda. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 35

Her colleague, Simphiwe Mlangeni, says he got his love of art from his father, who was a sculptor. “My father spent most of his time in his creative space and I feel privileged that he allowed me to be a part of his world.” Simphiwe practised drawing and sculpting by looking at his father’s sculptures and after high school he decided to pursue a career in fine art. While the other artists noticed their gifts at a young age, May Wentworth realised her vocation was art while studying at university. “I knew I was an artist when I attended my first year as a fashion design student and simply loathed the sewing and technical courses, but couldn’t get enough of the drawing courses.” When her lecturer Andreas Schonfeld saw this, he recommended that she switch to Fine Arts. May specialises in painting; her favourite medium is acrylic paint on canvas. “I love the immediacy of acrylic paint; it feels magical seeing textures and colours come to life on a canvas, and my greatest pleasure is the process of mark making.” Another remarkable artist is Vincent Osemwegie from Nigeria. He’s recently had his first solo exhibition at Arts on Main, a series of ballerina paintings inspired by South Africa’s first black ballerina, Kitty Phetla. She is the first black woman to star in the theatre production Black Swan. “I discovered Kitty at a formidable time in my life,” explains Vincent. “I was touched by the stuff that she had endured to end up being cast as the lead dancer of Black Swan. At the time I was in a rough place in my life, and Kitty revived my passion for art.” Vincent’s paintings incorporate ‘paint drips’, a skill he accidentally discovered. The method begins by a sketch of what the artist intends to paint and is followed by varied lines achieved by hovering the brush over the sketch lines on the canvas. There’s no denying the passion these artists have for their craft. It’s visible in their artworks. With a platform like LAE, we might just have a few masters on our hands. >> You can catch these geniuses at work every Sunday and first Thursday of the month at Arts on Main, unit 18. If you call in advance (011 402 2000), you may just land yourself a private viewing. To liaise with the LAE, contact Desiree Brouwer, 076 238 0282

Passionate and Proud Music, dance and food are part of most cultures, but Latin Americans do them in the only way they know how – with passion and pride. Netanja Turner danced, ate, and drank her way through Joburg’s Latin community. Photographs by Dion Viljoen, supplied

“R

eady?” shouts an energetic César Alvarado. The infectious beat of Ole Ola, this year’s Soccer World Cup anthem, starts. Legs wide apart, César is already swaying to the samba rhythm. The group of ordinary-looking Joburgers at Dance Junxion in Rosebank can’t wait. Hips, shoulders and feet hit the groove with adrenaline-pumping Latin flair. César calls it Adrélatin, a combination of adrenaline and Latin. Think samba, salsa, merengue and other smooth Latin moves meet cardio workout. It’s just one of the ways in which this award-winning Peruvian dancer and singer shares his passion for Latin American culture with the City of Gold. He’s also the driving force behind Fiesta Latina. This vibey one-day festival comes to Joburg for the third time this year. With live music, dancing, traditional games and tastes from 10 different countries, it’s a celebration of all things Latin – a piñata jam-packed with treats included. Inspired by César, Joburg Style learned more about this fascinating and exciting culture. Latin America comprises South America and the countries on the southern border of the United States, so from Mexico all the way down to Argentina. Spanish is the language of choice, except in Brazil, where Portuguese is spoken. Joburg’s Latin American community has been growing steadily over the years. Many Argentinians, for example, started making the city their home in the 1970s. Most Latin Americans are brought here because of their careers, explains César while we munch on some delicate, caramel-filled alfajores. He bakes these Peruvian shortbread cookie ‘sandwiches’ himself.

The rhythm will get you

Although Latin countries each have their own distinct cultures, they do have some things in common. Like the music – from the more traditional rhythms to get-offyour-bum Latin pop. “Latin American music combines indigenous, African and Spanish sounds. We are very passionate. So our songs are usually about love – new love, lost love, it doesn’t matter,” says César with a laugh. And where there’s music, there are stilettos stomping to the beat. “Yes, being Latin is definitely about passion,” says Adriana da Cunha, a dancer from Brazil. “Also loads of body connection and expression, such as hugs and kisses. We have fewer boundaries with the body. That’s probably one of the big reasons why dancing is such a big part of our culture. It starts at a young age.”

Eat, drink, be merry

Latin Americans also take their cuisine seriously. Just ask Hector and Gaby Agraz, the Mexican owners of Azteca Mexican Food Products in Midrand. The factory has been producing tacos, nachos and tortillas since 1997 and now supplies most of the restaurant chains in South Africa. Hector and Gaby are both from Mexico. As the mouthwatering aroma of hot tacos fill the air, Gaby explains that while every country is proud of its own unique cuisine, maize-based dishes (such as tortillas, tamales and arepas), 56 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

salsas, condiments (like guacamole, mole, chilli and chimichurri) and beans are all common across Latin America. Meat, poultry and fish dishes – and their preparation – are usually specific to certain regions. But no matter the country, the flavours are as vibrant and spicy as a Latin American hitting a dance floor. Popular drinks include yerba mate (a potent Argentinian tea) served in a special cup with a metal straw, and caipirinha (Brazil’s national cocktail), among other options which you can all try at the Fiesta Latina on 13 September.

Come one, come all

The biggest advocates for Latin passion and pride are the people, of course. “We are really friendly and love to be together,” says Denis Cardenas, the Venezuelan owner of Hashi, a sushi restaurant in Rosebank. “Family is very important, but friends can become part of the family too. Even if we don’t have a lot, we share what we have.” And surprise get-togethers can happen at any time – without warning. “You call a friend after work, asking what they’re doing. You go over to their house. 25 people end up coming and it’s a party,” laughs Edwin Gil, the Venezuelan chef at Hashi. How do you get in on the culture in Joburg, though? “Make a Latin American friend,” says Belén Benitez, a student whose parents moved to Johannesburg from Argentina when she was just a little girl. One of the best places to do exactly that will be Fiesta Latina. It’s a chance to feel that Latino-style passion and pride. >> Fiesta Latina is on 13 September at the Argentinian Association (Marks Park Sports Club, Judith Road, Emmarentia), starting at 1pm. R60 gets you in (kids under five enter free). More information, info@adrelatin.com >> For more information about the alfajores, contact eat@filigrana.co.za

Thought only South Africans know about braais? The Argentinian Association at Marks Park regularly hosts asados – traditional Argentine braais. The asador (the braai master – yes, he has a title; meat is serious business for Argentinians) grills lamb, beef, chicken and sausages to perfection over hot coals. Although the meat is just seasoned with a bit of salt and lemon, it’s delicious. A selection is served on a tray placed on a brasero to keep it sizzling, and is accompanied by salad and spicy chimichurri sauce. A Latin American favourite, caramel flan was the dessert of the day when we visited. The Association often couples an asado with a milonga (a tango event). nora@asociacionargentina.co.za Move your feet Get a taste of live Latin American music at The Orbit Jazz Club & Bistro in Braamfontein when its resident AfroCuban salsa band, En Fuego, takes to the stage. The group is mostly made up of South African musicians but lead singer César Hurtado is from Peru. New York-style Latino sounds and popular salseros are the inspiration behind their repertoire. www.theorbit.co.za Go Brazilian Dancing, acrobatics, music and a bit of simulated combat – what’s not to like about capoeira, a Brazilian martial art? Classes are held throughout Joburg. Steve Grunberg, whose parents moved to Egoli from Brazil in the 1980s, is one of the local capoeira mestres. He also started an Afro-Brazilian drumming group for high school kids in the city. estivador@capoeira.co.za

Cool City Tour

I

Imagine walking through your city, grey walls and streets, the general humdrum of people rushing to and from work, just trying to survive. But then you’re met by a giant blue budgie skateboarding, a green dragon rising bravely from the asphalt, or a giraffe twisting its way around a traffic light… No, you haven’t gone mad, you’re just discovering Joburg’s graffiti culture. When you mention the word ‘graffiti’, people’s opinions are divided. While some see it as vandalism and illegal, others see it as a strong artistic tradition bringing colour and art to cities all over the world. Graffiti is not a new development. From ancient cave walls in France, to graffiti engravings in Pompeii, to the beginnings of graffiti as we know it today in New York and Chicago in the late 1960s, people have always felt the need to express themselves – be it in a grotto, the back of a public bathroom door, a stationary train carriage, or a five-storey building. Graffiti came relatively late to Joburg, first arriving in Cape Town and on the Cape Flats. By the time it reached the City of Gold, the inner city was in a degenerative state and in many ways provided the perfect space for a graffiti industry to grow, thrive and evolve. With many businesses and people fleeing the Joburg www.joburgstyle.co.za | 61

Cool City Tour

CBD, graffiti artists flocked to it, learning to paint through the creation of complex tags. One of Joburg’s leading graffiti artists, who prefers anonymity, says he, like many other artists, became involved in the graffiti industry in the late 1990s as an offshoot of the hip-hop culture.

The problem wiTh graffiTi is ThaT words don’T do iT jusTice. words can’T express The rainbow of colours splashed over buildings, bridges and dusTbins The focus for many at the time was Club Reality in downtown Joburg, which supported graffiti artists and let them paint. From these humble beginnings, the city has seen an explosion of graffiti over the last few years, due in part to two annual festivals, The City of Gold and Back to the City. The City of Gold is a week-long inner-city urban festival that showcases graffiti in Joburg. World-famous International and local artists work together to create a number of walls throughout the inner city. These walls re-activate forgotten spaces in the inner city, bringing colour and art to communities sometimes left behind. The festival also comprises film screenings, urban art tours and

gallery exhibitions. Since 2007, Back to the City, primarily a hiphop festival on Freedom Day, has taken place in Newtown – the festivities include a graffiti battle between local artists on the pillars under the M1 highway. These two events have elevated the status of graffiti in Joburg with an increase in press coverage and local interest. This might be counter-intuitive to the fundamental principles of graffiti – an underground industry made up of illegal painting, crews and topsecret alter egos – but maybe that’s okay. As one graffiti artist stated, his point of view is schizophrenic in the sense that he doesn’t want everyone to know about it, but at the same time, the more graffiti the better. And although the art might not be aimed at the general public, many definitely enjoy it, either taking photos, going on tours or in the case of locals who work or live in graffiti-rich areas, enjoying the colour it brings to their surroundings. Malawian street hawker Raymond Jimu, who’s based under the M1 Highway in Newtown and surrounded by graffiti daily, says he really enjoys it and the people it brings to the area, even if he doesn’t know what it means. The problem with graffiti is that words don’t do it justice. Words can’t express the rainbow of colours splashed over buildings, bridges and dustbins Words can’t describe the mad letters snaking over Joburg’s electricity boxes, and neither can they truly express the feeling you get when you discover a new piece or character popping out around a corner. The only remedy to this is to get out there and explore graffiti in the city. So open your mind and start searching.

6 Botanical Beauty

From July to October, the Northern Cape is transformed from a traditionally arid landscape to a botanical wonderland when the spring flowers of the Namakwa region burst into a kaleidoscope of flowers. The blooming beauty of this region is a world-wide phenomenon.

Cool City Tour

Joburg graffiti artists to look out for: The city has some fantastic graffiti artists making their mark, including Rasty, Tapz, Fin, Bias, Mars, Dekor, Mein, Love, Rekso, Myza and Veronika. if you’re interested in the city’s graffiti, pay a visit to these places: Grayscale Gallery Grayscale is a gallery that presents exhibitions strongly influenced by street and low-brow culture and provides a platform for artists whose work doesn’t fit in a normal gallery setting. Past exhibitions have included painted skateboarding decks and souped-up sneakers. Grayscale is run by one of Jozi’s top crew’s Pressure Control Projects (PCP), and imports Montana paint, which has been developed specially for graffiti artists – so this is really your one-stop graffiti shop. 33 De Korte Street, Braamfontein 011 403 0077 www.grayscalegallery.co.za Two by Two Art Gallery Two by Two is situated right in the centre of some of Joburg’s best graffiti work – under the highway in Newtown. The gallery showcases different artists who are inspired by graffiti or gallery work by graffiti artists. They aim to supply gallery space to those who often can’t, or don’t, get to exhibit. They also sell Ironlak paint as well as graffiti books and other art supplies. 41 Gwigwi Mrwebi 081 831 3557 Newtown Graffiti If you’re looking to see some breathtaking graffiti first hand, take a trip to Newtown and wander down to Joburg’s primary graffiti gallery under the M1, featuring graffiticovered pillars and walls created primarily at the Back to the City Festival. A SPLASH OF

CO LO U R

The book Bright Bazaar: Embracing colour for make-you-smile style by Will Taylor, with photographs by Andrew Boyd, has become an international success showing people how not be afraid of colour when it comes to dĂŠcor

Delightfully Dotty Colours and patterns have been used to create a cheerful vibe. Homemade textiles with eye catching diamond patterns, a whimsical lampshade and painted multicoloured dots introduce vibrancy to the neutral backdrop.

A Light Touch Sometimes a subtle difference is all that is needed to create visual interest. In this room a wall mounted cabinet is painted in a soft sky blue hue to define it against the white walls.

Will Taylor is the author of brightbazaarblog. com, one of the world’s leading interiors blogs, with over 400,000 readers per month, 2.6 million followers on Pinterest and 20,000 fans on Facebook and Twitter. His blog was recently named as the seventh most inspiring design website in the world by the Daily Telegraph. Bright Bazaar encourages you to experiment with schemes that vary from fun fizzy sherbet shades to vibrant yellows and lime divine, via ten colour cocktails that include The Tangerine Dream and The Monochrome Magic. Will regularly collaborates with Martha Stewart Living, Laura Ashley, IKEA, Farrow & Ball and Habitat. From soft and delicate pastel hues to bright and bold colour statements, it’s an engaging and practical book that equips the reader with the confidence and knowledge of how to successfully show their personality when decorating with colour. Delivered in a friendly and encouraging tone, the book reads like a helpful friend, guiding the reader through making the most out of the most important cornerstones of their life – where they live.

FOOD AS

The Arts & Culture issue got the Joburg Style team thinking about the food section in a unique and different way. They say you eat with your eyes and we couldn’t agree more. Photographs Graeme Wyllie. Styling and words Leila Saffarian Food isn’t simply an entity on its own; shapes, colours, textures and flavours all enhance a meal, and the way a dish is presented often turns a humble plate of food from drab-a-dinner to an extravagant feast. Chefs, foodies and home cooks alike find and source food inspiration from different genres, such as the art and fashion worlds. Certain colours or images seen on the runway might just be enough to spark an idea in a creative chef’s mind, to adapt a dish to resemble the textures or movement of fabric. Colour blocking and the ombre effect (colour grading) have been trending within the fashion world for some time, so why not in food as well? We decided to create our own colour palettes where we could pick a single ingredient (or more) within that colour palette to create not only a tasty, but equally beautiful image and plate of food.

Green with envy

Heading into spring, a touch of green is a must. From the light shades of star fruit and limes, to the textured leaves of mini Savoy cabbages and the dark bursts of emerald tree-like broccoli florets, we created something equally delicious from our green bounty.

Food

Pistachio, pumpkin seed and basil pesto

As delicious as a simple basil pesto is, pistachios add a creamy flavour to fragrant basil leaves and the pumpkin seeds add a nutty crunch. Dollop onto gourmet sandwiches with prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella, add to smooth creamed cheese for a tasty dip using home-made herby breadsticks to dunk, or simply add spoonfuls to warm, freshly made home-made pasta for a simple meal made with the best ingredients. Apart from the green palette looking beautiful, a touch of green also instantly screams “health and wellbeing”, the perfect start to spring. Ingredients 1 small garlic clove, peeled ½ cup shelled pistachios 4 tablespoons pumpkin seeds

3 cups loosely packed basil leaves Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ½ cup + 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese Method • Place the garlic in a food processor and pulse until chopped. • Add the pistachios, pumpkin seeds, basil leaves and season well with Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper. • Pulse until the nuts and seeds are finely chopped. • Add the olive oil gradually and process until well combined. Add the Parmesan cheese and follow with a few quick pulses. • Adjust seasoning (if the mixture looks a little dry, add a few more drops of olive oil). • *Place in a sterilised glass jar. If not using immediately, add a layer of olive oil on top of the pesto and store in the refrigerator for one to two weeks* www.joburgstyle.co.za | 75

Seeing Red

From plump, glistening pomegranate rubies to crunchy baby radishes, sweet red peppers and juicy vine tomatoes, the red colour palette certainly adds a splash to any dining table and meal. We opted for something fresh, simple and light.

Vine tomato, radish and micro herb salad with a pomegranate dressing

Simple? Yes. Utterly delicious? Definitely! Scrumptious sweet baby radishes and juicy vine tomatoes are fabulous on their own but add a few peppery herbs and combine with a sweet, tangy pomegranate dressing and you have a winner of a salad for any dinner party. It’s equally fabulous with a few shards of sharp, salty Parmesan cheese. It’s easy, simple and will definitely impress guests. There’s something rather eye -catching about pops of red when it comes to food. A bold colour that automatically makes one think of something sweet or a little bit fiery, elements in cooking that no great food lover would want to be without... Ingredients 500g vine tomatoes 5 baby radishes 4 tablespoons fresh pomegranate rubies Large handful of assorted micro herbs Large handful of fresh wild rocket

Pomegranate dressing 80ml extra virgin olive oil Juice of 1 fresh pomegranate and pomegranate rubies Juice of half a fresh lime Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 100g shaved Parmesan Method • Slice the tomatoes and place onto a serving plate or platter. • Thinly slice the radishes and add to the serving platter with the tomatoes. • Scatter the tomatoes and radishes with the fresh pomegranate rubies, assorted micro herbs and wild rocket. • For the dressing, combine the olive oil, pomegranate juice and rubies and lime juice in a jug. • Season well with Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix well. • Pour the dressing over the salad just before serving and scatter with Parmesan shavings.

Orange Delight

We used the ombre effect for this one. From the bright pop of colour with beautiful granadillas and sweet baby carrots, a mix of kumquats and gooseberries, to the lighter shades of Parmesan chunks, fresh pasta and bright egg yolks, what you have are dashes of colour and a lot of flavour.

Kumquat jam served with coconut cake

Making your own jam is easier than you think. Keep jars of this preserve in your fridge to spread on your morning toast, add to sauces or spoon between layers of Victoria sponge cake for a high tea treat. You could also just enjoy it with a rather lipsmacking coconut loaf. Some say orange is the new black and we certainly agree. Nothing quite beats the citrus notes of a lemon or orange or glossy, bright egg yolks, just waiting to be combined with handfuls of flour for silky, pale yellow homemade pasta. Ingredients 24 kumquats, rinsed and thinly sliced 2 oranges, rinsed, sliced and seeded 9 cups white sugar Juice of 1 lemon 8 cups water

Method • Finely chop the kumquats and oranges and add to a large saucepan. • Add three cups of water per cup of fruit. Stand in a cool place for 2 – 3 hours to soften. • Bring the fruit mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the rind is tender. Remove from the heat and measure the cooked fruit. • Add one cup of sugar to the pot for every cup of cooked fruit. Add the lemon juice and bring to the boil. • Boil, stirring occasionally, until the gel stage is reached (the temperature of the marmalade should be 105 degrees Celsius when checked with a kitchen thermometer). Remove from the heat and skim any foam that reaches the surface. • Transfer the mixture to sterilised glass jars, leaving some space to seal. Seal the jars immediately and allow to cool in the jars. Refrigerate after opening.

HANGING OUT IN NORTHCLIFF Actor, writer, creative producer and music lover Anthony Oseyemi tells us about his favourite things to do and see, and where he shops, in his hood, Northcliff

What is your favourite thing about Northcliff? Location, location, location! The views and landscapes are beautiful, the area is quiet, and there are great spots to hang out at.

Picture: Dion Viljoen

What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend? I like visiting the Maboneng Precinct or just relaxing on my balcony. Sometimes I move around the vicinity, doing the general things people do over the weekend — shop, loiter, catch up with friends and chill out.

without a doubt. It’s the second highest point in the city and the views are breathtaking. You’re not a true Joburger if you’ve never… Been pulled over by the traffic cops for petty things, or broken down in the middle of the highway. There’s never a dull moment in my hood because… We entertain ourselves; it’s where many Joburg talents are born.

For a scrumptious meal in Northcliff one must got to… Isabella’s. The food is great, you won’t want to leave. I’m especially fond of their red velvet cake – it’s the real deal.

For someone who’s new in Northcliff, where would you suggest they go for: Retail therapy… The Zarq. They have a great selection of slick outfits.

Which is the best sundowner spot? It has to be Northcliff hill,

Best ambience… Isabella’s. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 91

Bucketlist cities Our beautiful planet has so much to offer. I wish I had the time, and of course the budget, to travel often - but even then I don’t think a lifetime will be long enough to discover and experience all that I’d like to. Anne Dolinschek chooses three cities rich in culture, art and history to explore

L

International Travel

et’s start with Thailand. Chiang Mai in the north, to be more precise. I am a Westerner through and through, with an Eastern European heritage, therefore Asia always holds an air of mystery for me. It’s completely out of my comfort zone and far removed from everything I know. So why Chiang Mai? The name means ‘new city’ and even though the city is 718 years old, the name has never been changed. King Meng Rai the Great founded the city as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom back in 1296. It was not only the cultural hub of the kingdom but also the centre of Buddhism in Northern Thailand. The city is one of few places in Thailand where you can experience both historical and modern Thai culture in one place. It has everything from centuries-old pagodas and around 300 temples to modern hotels, nightclubs and bars. Parts of the wall that protected the moated old city is still intact, as well as the four main gates that once provided access to it. Chiang Mai has lots to offer, not only with their historical temples but it also has elephant camps, cooking and massage schools, loads of outdoor activities as well as breathtaking scenery. If you’re into the cultural side of things, there’s the diversity that the city residents offer, the cuisine and lively festivals. It boasts picturesque mountains, waterfalls and rivers. The city is definitely modern and diverse, but has kept its old-school Thai charm.

Musts: The wonderful November festivals

St. Petersburg, Russia

Peter the Great built the city on a swamp and at the time it seemed to be quite a joke. A couple of hundred years on and it’s been dubbed one of the world’s most beautiful cities. St. Petersburg’s Baroque and Neoclassical architecture ensures a European flavour. The citizens also consider themselves to be more European than their fellow Russians. The city’s name has changed three times since its inception in 1703, starting off with St. Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad, and finally back to St. Petersburg in 1991. It’s still considered Russia’s cultural capital and besides famous attractions such as St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Mariinsky Theatre and the www.joburgstyle.co.za | 93

the river end of Ploschad Dekabristov. The statue was sculpted over 12 years for Catherine the Great by Etienne Falconet.

Musts: The State Hermitage Museum

The palace was built for Catherine the Great’s lover Grigory Orlov. It is named so as it uses 36 different kinds of marble in its construction, both on the exterior as well as the interior. It also has an impressive and eclectic art collection.

Set in the superb Winter Palace, the Hermitage collection started with Catherine the Great. Nicolas I also added to the collection and he opened it up to the public in 1852. During the post-revolutionary period, many more great works were added. A definite must-visit.

Yusupov Palace

Situated on the Moyka River, it has one of the most perfectly reserved 19th century interiors in the city. The last Yusupov Palace owner was Prince Felix. Quite eccentric in his ways, this high-society darling loved cross-dressing and often attended the Mariinsky and society balls as a woman. The palace is most notoriously known as the place where Grigory Rasputin met his gruesome end in 1916.

The Mariinsky Theatre

The greatest venue for ballet and opera in St. Petersburg, the theatre itself is quite an attraction in its own right.

Paris, France

When thinking of Paris, I have visions of great love affairs, quaint sidewalk cafés, brasseries, gorgeous pan au chocolat and of course French champagne. The city of love is adored by all who visits it and has a magical appeal to even those who have never set foot there. The iconic Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame’s spire are visible from almost every nook and cranny of the city, but the best way to experience Paris is to www.joburgstyle.co.za | 95

Musts: The Eiffel Tower

The tower was supposed to be torn down in 1909 but its creator, Gustave Eiffel, insisted that it could be used as a testing ground for scientific experiments and a radio transmitter later on. Aren’t we glad he convinced everyone!

The Louvre

If you’re an art lover, it needs to be at the top of your list. It’s the world’s most-visited museum and hosts pieces as old as 9,000 years.

Walk along the Seine

You will encounter the hidden gems of Paris, like bars located in houseboats, an innercity beach and you will see most of the city’s landmarks. Couples can hang a padlock on the Pond des Arts bridge and throw the key in the water to symbolise their love.

Take a tour of 31 Rue Cambon

This was Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment. Back in the day, the apartment was situated on top of the Chanel boutique, where models would show collections to prospective buyers. These days it is used for fashion shoots and press interviews.

The Arc de Triomphe

It’s the monument to Napoleon’s 1805 victory at Austerlitz. The monument has loads of features but one that stands out is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that lies at ground level of the Arc. It honours the 1.3 million French soldiers who lost their lives in WWI and an eternal flame is lit daily at 18:30. I’m ready to pack my bags and book my tickets. The travel itch needs to be scratched… Safe travels!

ith mini Eiffel Towers and old buildings reminiscent of a bygone area dotted along the High Street, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a one-horse town. However, quite the contrary. The cosy coffee shops are bustling all year around, the shops teem with people, and the sidewalks are abuzz with general chatter. I was recently invited to spend the night at the beautiful Vaal de Grace Golf Estate, a couple of kilometres outside Parys. Not being a golfer myself, I invited my boyfriend Nick along to enjoy the experience too. He thanked me profusely when he found out the estate plays host to the first Nick Price Signature Golf Course in the country. We arrived at Vaal de Grace at lunchtime, starving, and it was recommended we try the restaurant/pub Cherry on Top in town. It’s a casual outdoor spot, located on the roof of a small shopping centre. I can imagine it would be great for sundowners in summer. Nick had the biggest, sauciest burger I’ve ever seen and I indulged in the chicken wings and a mound of chips – Tim Noakes would not approve. We decided we’d explore a little bit more the next day, and headed back to the Estate where we were handed the keys to our luxurious mansion for the night. Looking over the Vaal River, we felt quite small in our three-bedroom, four-bathroom abode. We decided we’d definitely be back with a bunch of friends. It was great to take some time out with a magazine, listening to the sounds of the many birds by the river and in the surrounding trees. The silence was short-lived as Nick’s alarm went off at 5pm signalling the start of the rugby. We drove up to the beautifully decorated and stylish, yet still homely, clubhouse to join the many other rugby enthusiasts. We were still quite full from lunch so after the less-than-exciting rugby match we headed back to our villa for a much-needed early night. Since we skipped on dinner the night before, I was craving a delicious pancake when I woke up. We drove into town and strolled around, waiting for something to grab us. It wasn’t long before the cute, welcoming www.joburgstyle.co.za | 101

Die Koffiekan lured us in. The cinnamon and sugar pancake with a mound of whipped cream on top, accompanied by a large banana milkshake, was devoured in no time. We walked off our huge brunch and popped into some of the antique stores and art galleries along Bree Street. The best, in fact the only, way to experience Bree Street is to walk from one place to the next. Here you’ll come across just about anything you’d find in your grandparents’ homes. Some of the trinkets and knick-knacks brought back many a fond memory. The gift shops cater for a wide variety of tastes. You can buy anything from a painted tin can, crystals and paper art to jewellery, wire art and many other gifts. The art galleries will keep you captivated and, unless you know exactly what you want to hang on your wall, the choice between outstanding works by local artists is bound to be a difficult one. You definitely need more than 24 hours in this underrated town. Some of the amazing activities on offer in and around the area include golf, white water rafting, hiking trails, horse trails, fishing, hot-air ballooning, star gazing (very romantic), archery, mountain biking, quad biking, team-building activities, abseiling and bird watching. Alas, we had just one night in Parys, but I’ll definitely go back to explore more (weekend getaway, anyone?). From our short time there it’s easy to see why people choose to stay at Vaal de Grace Golf Estate. It’s a mere hop from the town, the service is superb, the accommodation unparalleled, and the golf course? Well, Nick’s smile says it all. www.vaaldegrace.co.za www.parys.info

Top: One of the many mini Eiffel Towers scattered around the town. Middle: Fluffy and delicious pancakes at Die Koffiekan; Out-of-towners enjoying a unique cheetah experience. Left and right: You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to antiques and art galleries in Parys.

ou know the times are changing when a major car dealership opens a new showroom in Jozi dedicated solely to the Opel brand. Opel? They must be bonkers. Yet that is exactly what Williams Hunt has done in Fourways; it is the only dealership in the country to do so. With Opel sales on the rebound in Europe, its primary market, and two new models – Adam, a supermini, and Mokka, a dinky SUV-cum-crossover – destined for South Africa early next year, their timing may well be fortuitous. If the old proverb is to be believed, lightning never strikes twice in the same place, though it does seem that the Opel Blitz is about to electrify our automotive market once again. The last time it did so was roundabout 1987, when Opel bossed the mighty VW GTi and Ford Escort RS Turbo on Jozi roads. That’s right, the Kadett GSi 16v was the The Boss of the hot-hatch brigade. With a pair of cams and 16 valves, its C2ONE engine was advanced for its time. Cosworth having fettled its cylinder head, it cranked out 115kW (a big deal at the time) and raced to 100km/h in 8.0 seconds. The extra valves moved power higher up the rev range, where it was exhilarating to access: a rush of speed above 4,500rpm added a frenetic excitement to chasing the red line. I know an Afrikaans bloke, born in Vereeniging and raised in Krugersdorp, who swears that his teenage years were filled with more fervent fantasies about owning and racing The Boss than having fun

with adolescent girls. Goes to show that Opel had quite a captive market – and you would have expected it to have kicked on from there, though sadly the German car maker went into steady decline. Owned by General Motors (GM), it rolled out products that were striking only for their collective indifference. So much so that Jeremy Clarkson, the celebrated petrolhead who tends to call a spade a spade, became the bête noire of GM and Vauxhall, its parent company that badge engineers Opel products for the UK market. Clarkson famously described GM as a “pensions and healthcare” company that sees the “car-making side of the business as an expensive loss-making nuisance”. He also expressed particular disdain for the Vauxhall Vectra, saying: “I’ve always hated it because I’ve always felt it was designed in a coffee break by people who couldn’t care less about cars.” Eish! Whether you agree with these sentiments or not, GM did go bust in the financial meltdown of the late noughties and had to be bailed out by the Yankee government. And Opel, though still marginally profitable, came perilously close to being sold off; at the time, some hacks mischievously suggested that it would be better served by again manufacturing sewing machines and bicycles, the twin pillars on which the company was founded in the 1800s. Here in post-apartheid South Africa, with GM reintroducing the Chevrolet brand, lovers of the Opel emblem cringed when the excellent Captiva

The Boss and Super Boss The GSi 16v helped Opel conquer the hot hatch segment in the late 1980s. Known as The Boss, it shredded the VW GTi and Ford Escort RS Turbo. A later model, the Super Boss, was an M3 slayer.

and Corsa bakkie were summarily rebadged. Happily, this silliness seems to be at an end. Distinct from Chevvy, which can’t be described as a premium brand, Opel has long mastered the art of turning niche models into successful volume sellers. While today flexible MPVs such as the Meriva is setting trends, in 1970 the Manta and Ascona tapped new vehicle segments for the automaker, selling nearly 1,2 million units in only five years’ time. Though they shared the same technical platform, they addressed different customer groups: the Manta was a dynamic sports coupé; the Ascona a comfortable family car or compact lifestyle station wagon. And old-timers will recall the 1960s and 70s when the Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat were ‘The Big Three’ vehicles that defined Opel’s upper-class range. It is unlikely to churn out such behemoths ever again, focusing instead on smaller vehicles featuring the allnew turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol and diesel engines that began the current renewal of Opel’s powertrain portfolio, and the compact 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo that made its world première at the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show. A glance at its Monza concept car, one of the most extraordinary designs by any car manufacturer in recent times, affirms that Opel has the knowhow to produce stunning vehicles. Its DNA has started filtering through to production level (witness the frontal aspect of the Astra OPC) and heralds a phase of renewal for the brand. Enter the Adam and Mokka, stage left.

tart ’em young. Danish brickmaker Lego recently unveiled the original Mini Cooper as its latest Creator Expert series of kits: it has 1,077 pieces and, fully assembled, is an adorable 23cm-long replica of Sir Alec Issigonis’ classic that may introduce a new generation of kids (and perhaps a few grown-ups) to the joys of being expressive. I love it and want one in my Christmas stocking, though I suspect Lego is in cahoots with BMW, owners of the Mini brand and past masters at subliminally convincing us that its cars are cool through a clever association with artistic expression. Long before Pimp my Ride had become a hit TV series in the States, the Bavarians were doing some seriously funky stuff with their wheels. In fact, they’ve been at it since 1975. Being a luxury brand, you’d think they were barmy to let freaks like Andy Warhol mess with their mollycoddled status symbol. As it turned out, however, the Pop Art genius wasn’t nearly as impactful in the, er, metal as he was on canvas. Even our own Esther Mahlangu arguably worked a better trick. In 1991, the Mpumalanga-born artist created the first ‘African Art Car’, decorating a BMW 525i with typical motifs of the Ndebele tribe. Why it was not incorporated in the new national flag beats me. At the very least it would have made our banner even more colourful and bedecked with an automotive metaphor for the upwardly mobile aspirations of our democratic society – especially those with Malemaesque tenderpreneur tendencies. 112 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

But I digress. Another famous Pop Artist, Jeff Koons, recently took the art car concept to the next level. Koons decorated an M3 GT2 that competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours with bold streaks, making the car look fast even when it is stationary, and completing the theme with blasting debris at the rear that evoke teeth-rattling acceleration. Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, some might say it sucks, though I happen to like it. Happily, the desire to bling or pimp a ride extends beyond Pop Artists. Engineers love having a crack at it too; witness the brutes that BMW with its M Division and AMG are foisting on us. The latter has catapulted the traditionally staid Mercedes brand squarely into bling territory, accompanied by the smell of smoking takkies, the sound of popping exhausts and engines that can claim kinship to a screeching banshee. And let’s not forget about Jozi’s backyard mechanics, the kind of people who know the difference between a hot hatch and a hot rod. How bad would they kill for something like Honda’s Civic Type R? It is coming to a Honda showroom near you. Even without its suspension dropped, the Civic Type R will work a treat at the Rock Raceway in Brakpan. I can already see it drifting in a cloud of figure-8 smoke and hear its insane wail while putting down some rubber. And how sick would it be to customise its already striking body with some heat-reactive paint? If you think I’m nuts, so be it. At least I can blame it on Lego. >> For more car creativity, visit

Joburg Style, together with Joburg Tourism, provide you with some of the top events to look forward to in the upcoming months. JOHANNESBURG ARTS ALIVE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 31 August – 10 September Johannesburg’s première arts festival will infuse the city with the arts this September as the nation celebrates a full 20 years of democracy. True to tradition, the Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival has curated an exciting mix of dance, theatre, music, poetry, comedy and visual arts for Joburg citizens over a 10-day period. Ever committed to ensuring that Joburgers are afforded a range of artistic offerings from across the world, the festival has enlisted the talents of artists as far afield as Brazil, the United States, India, France and China, among others. the Joburg Theatre will host a range of performances over the 10 days of the festival. This year’s edition of Dance Umbrella features a range of collaborations between South Africans and dancers from different countries. As a tribute and celebration to South Africa’s triumphant 20 years of democracy, the Festival will host a 20 Years of Democracy Diva’s concert, featuring one of Brazil’s most celebrated vocalists, Tania Maria. The vocal legend will be joined on stage by Cape Verde’s Nancy Viera, Isabella Novella of Mozambique, and South Africa’s Lulu Dikana. In theatre, award-winning actor Charles Dutton will bring his autobiographical one-hander From Jail to Yale to theatre-loving audiences – an inspiring chronicling of his life story of triumph over almost overwhelming adversity. Popularly known for his many TV and film roles, this established Hollywood player is definitely one of the festival’s highlights, and will run at Joburg Theatre’s Fringe Theatre. Renowned stage production 9 Parts of Desire forms part of the Shared History Festival’s section of the Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival. 9 Parts of Desire has toured the world, and will find a temporary Joburg home at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square. partnership with the Brenda Fassie Legacy project, the Festival will be hosting the Can You Sing Like MaBrrrr? competition, for singers who believe that their stagecraft and vocals reflect the fire that Brenda Fassie brought to every performance. The 10-day festival will round off, appropriately, with the inaugural SEAexpo (Showbiz, Entertainment and Arts Expo) at Newtown’s Sci-Bono venue. www.arts-alive.co.za WORLD ORCHID CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION 10 – 14 September Joburg is thrilled to be welcoming one of the world’s most prestigious and spectacular floral shows to the city during Tourism Month, the 21st World Orchid Conference & Exhibition (WOC), taking place at the

Sandton Convention Centre. This coveted international event was bid for by a group of South African orchid enthusiasts and won in partnership with the Joburg Convention Bureau three years ago in Singapore. This is the second time South Africa is hosting a WOC. The 10th WOC was hosted in Durban in 1981. “Dubbed the ‘Orchid Olympics’, this promises to be one of the most extraordinary botanical events and floral extravaganzas ever held in South Africa, and we encourage the public to attend,” says Anthony Grohovaz, who led the initiative to bring the WOC back to South Africa and win the bid for Johannesburg. It has become a tradition for the many orchid enthusiasts who meet at this event every three years to take the opportunity for pre- and post-tours. This has an additional spin-off for the country

concerned as these registrants are generally well off and spend significant money during their stay. This multi-faceted plant and flower event is organised and staged on a non-profit, not-for-gain basis, with all surplus proceeds to benefit South Africa’s endangered biodiversity. www.woc21.org STANDARD BANK JOY OF JAZZ 25 – 27 September Jazz giants from across the globe – including four-time Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves, National Endowment for the Arts jazz master trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, and South African musical legends Sibongile Khumalo and Jonas Gwangwa – are part of the line-up for this year’s star-studded Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. The new-look 2014 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre. Other huge drawcards include singer Ann Hampton Callaway, Filipino recording artist and cultural trailblazer Charmaine Clamor, New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott, Independent Music Award winner Omar Sosa from Cuba, Italian jazz singer and Grammy nominee Roberta Gambarini, Cameroon’s Richard Bona, Dwele from the US, and trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko, regarded as Poland’s most important jazz ambassador, who will be performing with some top young jazz performers from Finland and Denmark. Performers from South Africa include Tutu Puoane, Feya Faku and his quintet, the Mike Rossi Project, Herbie Tsoaeli and Carlos Mombelli, both of whom will be performing with their quartets. A number of Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz winners are also on the bill, including this year’s winner Kyle Shepherd. Germany’s Wolfgang Diefenbach is the founder and artistic director of the Hessian State Youth Jazz Orchestra, also known as Kicks & Sticks, who will be providing a big band sound at this year’s festival. Delfeayo Marsalis will be appearing with acclaimed Uptown Jazz Orchestra (UJO), who play everything from traditional New Orleans music, swing and bebop, to contemporary brass band funk. Dianne Reeves is regarded as one of the greatest female jazz vocalists in the world. She is known for her unique jazz and R&B styling and her following has only grown as she’s crossed musical genres. After doing session work and touring with Sergio www.joburgstyle.co.za | 117

Mendes and Harry Belafonte, she made her name in the 1980s and has earned four jazz Grammys – an unprecedented three of which were consecutive. Reeves was the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s first jazz creative chair and the first singer to perform at the famed LA Walt Disney Concert Hall. With four No.1 singles in the UK, three American hits and record sales of over 30 million worldwide, Billy Ocean still holds the title as the biggest black recording star to emerge from the UK and his recognisable singing voice hasn’t changed over the years. He sprung to fame with the hit singles Love Really Hurts Without You and Red Light Spells Danger before winning a Grammy Award with Caribbean Queen. Standard Bank Joy of Jazz’s move to Sandton allows the festival to continue its spectacular growth and also means that, for the first time, audiences will be able to buy a full festival pass for all four stages – Dinaledi, Conga, Mbira and Diphala – in line with jazz festivals around the globe. www.joyofjazz.co.za Pick n Pay TasTe of Joburg 25 – 28 september After announcing record numbers for last year’s event, Pick n Pay Taste of Joburg is back at Montecasino Outdoor Event Area. SEPIA RAIN STEVENSON GALLERY

Picture: Derek Smith

18 September – 31 October Kambalu’s Sepia Rain is a series of short films, each no more than a minute, shot during his travels in Europe where he has made England his home. The films, which he calls ‘Psychogeographical Nyau Cinema’, are based on spontaneous site-specific performances. Inspired by the Gule Wamkulu (the Great Play) which has been celebrated by the Chewa in the masquerade culture of his country of birth, Kambalu approaches film making as an occasion for critical thought and sovereign activities – quirky, playful and often transgressive acts aimed at expressing a radical subjectivity with which the artist regards the world. Good service, Great passion A trip to Madrid inspired Christina, owner of the quirky Odd Café in Greenside, to open up her own eatery, ensuring that patrons enjoy delicious food, oneof-a-kind art, and wonderful music. By Nwabisa Ngumbela When and how did you get into the food industry? I opened Odd Café in August 2010. After a fair amount of brainstorming sessions with my husband, it was decided that the merging of art, design, music and food would be a great way to bring together artists, musicians, actors and poets to collaborate under one roof. This got me very excited but I felt there was still an element that was missing. The reusing and recycling aspect of the café completed the project and brought the shop to life. We bought old furniture and gave it a quirky facelift. How did the idea of Odd Café come about? I saw an opportunity and gave myself the licence to experiment in the hospitality industry and, so far, I’ve learnt a phenomenal amount and enjoyed every minute of it. How did you execute the idea in the beginning? The idea was executed with plenty of meetings with our professional marketing team. We gave free coffee to everyone in the area during the time that the builders were finishing the shop-fitting. We hired 142 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

people to give out flyers and biscuits to the people in traffic in the surrounding suburbs, and we also hired a dozen final-year graphic design students from the Design Centre (located next door to Odd Café) and gave them the opportunity to graffiti our building. That was a lot of fun. What do you love most about the eatery? What I love most about my café is that it’s a space for people to feel at home and comfortable in. We have an amazing clientele and we ensure that they always feel comfortable. What can you promise your patrons? An enjoyable experience, a meeting place for friends, and a home away from home. If you could choose any dish at Odd Café as your favourite, what would it be? Our delicious Babalas Haloumi Burger is a winner. The burger consists of caramelised onions, crispy bacon and panfried haloumi cheese all on top of a beef patty. We prepare the lightly toasted bun with crème fraiche and basil leaves, and serve

Shop Talk it with a dollop of our homemade oriental relish. All our ingredients are freshly prepared. You may wait a bit longer but freshness and quality are key ingredients to the Odd Café experience. Where would you like to see your business in the next five years? Since Odd Café fosters young talent within the art, design and music industry, I would like the café to be remembered as the place where artists and musicians were given the platform to perform, exhibit and where their successful careers began. Why do you think Odd Café has been so successful? Being true to my brand has made it successful. Sticking to its values and principles, which is to create a space where people fall in love with food, design, music, each other and life. Did you expect the success your restaurant has achieved? Anybody who knows me well would describe me as creative, passionate and not scared to challenge the status quo and do something different. I am definitely a person who has guts, will take the bull by the horns and not be scared to fail. One must never expect success but strive towards it.

Pictures: Joburg Tourism

If you could change anything about Odd Café what would it be? Nada! I simply love my café and its quirkiness.

The Brand Page

Love these...

From blowing bubblegum bubbles and munching on an iconic chip snack, to drinking maas and using well-known beauty products, we’ve got your (and our) favourite South African brands covered

JUSTINE

One of South Africa’s premier skincare brands, Justine, was founded 40 years ago in May 1973. The vision of its two founders, Veronica Devine and Paul Symes, was to launch a range of skincare products specifically designed to deliver tangible benefits in the harsh South African climate and to be formulated on par with the best international brands. Their aim was to pioneer and develop a

NIKNAKS

high-quality, no-compromise range of natural and botanical skincare treatments with elegant yet inexpensive packaging, combining the very best of nature and science. The name Justine came as an inspiration from the classic The Alexandria Quartet, written by Laurence Durrel. The heroine Justine was mysterious, dynamic, strong and determined, but always feminine and alluring.

INKOMAZI ‘Taste the good life with Inkomazi.’ This true South African heritage brand is the original rich and creamy maas, cherished and trusted for its superior taste and unsurpassed sustenance. For over 30 years, traditional Inkomazi amasi has dominated the market, with a substantial market share. Inkomazi, which was launched in 1979, was the first branded amasi product in South Africa. It soon captured the minds and hearts of South Africans throughout the country, who consider Inkomazi a part of their heritage and culture, their way of life. Following consumer research, a need for an amasi with a smooth consistency was identified. To meet this need, Danone launched ‘Inkomazi Smooth’, giving the consumer – for the first time – a choice in types of amasi. Inkomazi Smooth still has the same rich and creamy taste consumers have come to know and love. It forms part of the deep-rooted family connotation many South Africans have grown up with.

CHAPPIES Certainly our favourite deadline snack in the Joburg Style office, Niknaks have been making South Africans snack happy since 1972. Made famous by Nik the Nak, it’s made of real maize, is oh so delicious, and is a staple at any South African braai. Niknaks has gone through various revamps in terms of the look and feel of its packaging. The familiar Niknaks icon Nik the Nak has also been given a face-lift. The iconic character was first introduced as a middleaged comic-like character but has since evolved into a funkier, more youthful male, symbolising elements of youth culture. 144 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

A truly iconic local brand, they may have got smaller over the years, but they still have that delicious fruity taste and make the best bubbles around. Remember blowing bubble competitions as kids? Chappies have been passed down from generation to generation, and has played a role in the lives of most South Africans at some point. The brand is particularly well known for its ‘Did You Know?’ fun facts inside the wrappers. They’ve expanded their flavour range to include watermelon and cherry.
