et’s start off with some very exciting news: For the second year in a row, Joburg is the most visited, most popular city in Africa, according to the 2014 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Beating the likes of typical touristy cities Cape Town, Cairo and Durban, this is a huge achievement. Considering this, the fact that it’s our Best Of issue is very befitting. So, what makes this the Best Of issue? Well, we’ve got top international photographer Jodi Bieber showcasing her amazing work from her book Soweto in our photo essay. Leigh Crymble writes about Joburg’s movers and shakers – five top people in the city’s five top industries. Our fashion features the most popular brands, as voted by you in our online poll. Our resident foodie master Leila Saffarian put together an ice-cream delight feature, Keeping it Cool. We’ve also got Joburg’s top 10 steakhouses, the city’s top 10 attractions, and the top 10 things to do with your kids this summer in the always informative JList section. And then there’s our cover star, Toya Delazy. She marches to the beat of her own drum, is a trendsetter, and fits in perfectly with Joburg Style. The cover was shot at Randlords, undoubtedly the best venue in Joburg, and the iconic city skyline provided the perfect backdrop for this issue. It’s New Year’s resolution time. Do you believe in them and do you have any? Let me know. Since 2015 marks my last year in my 20s, I’ll certainly have a few. It’s been an extremely busy year, with highs and lows, but I’m so proud of our

The hands A status symbol, a collector’s item, a piece of sentimental value, or simply a way to tell the time, watches have evolved dramatically over the years. Here are (some century-old) brands that have stood the test of time

TAG Heuer Over the last 150 years, TAG Heuer has established a reputation as the unrivalled path-breaker of Swiss watch-making. Founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer, its many watch-making firsts include the first oscillating pinion in 1887, still a key component of contemporary chronographs; the Mikrograph of 1916, the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second; the first automatic chronograph movement with micro-rotor, in 1969; and the first tourbillion driven by belts in 2014, the Monaco V4. The brand partners with people and projects who, like them, have changed the times and made their mark: 2013 Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo; F1 Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and its world champion Jenson Button; five-time Grand Slam tennis champion Maria Sharapova; the new FIA Formula E Championship, the world’s first electric car racing series; Sebastien Ogier and his World Rally Championship-winning team Volkswagen Motorsport; the Automobile Club of Monaco and the Monaco Grand Prix; actordriver Patrick Dempsey; and film stars Cameron Diaz, Leonardo

Di Caprio, Steve McQueen and Shah Rukh. TAG Heuer’s latest campaign, ‘Don’t Crack Under Pressure’, captures the mental strength of the brand’s ‘Dream Team’ – athletes and partners who reflect the company’s shield. TAG now enters the world of marathon running: The ultimate expression of mental endurance. CHopArd Happy Sport Medium Automatic Two Tone Last year, to celebrate the brand’s 20th anniversary, the new Happy Sport Medium Automatic was unveiled. The famous moving diamonds added an unprecedented mechanical dimension to their enchanting natural charm. Today, Chopard provides a new two-tone backdrop composed of three models: the Chrono, the Automatic and the Power Control, all dedicated to the most prestigious of the classic Grand Prix races. The new Grand Prix de Monaco range offers a complete range of watches featuring functions as varied as the three main types of car engines: V6, V8 and V12. The collection also sees the introduction of

signature of the Zenith manufacture. On the case back, a sapphire crystal engraved with this same tongue inscribed with ‘The Rolling Stones Edition’ reveals the El Primero 4061 movement, the world’s most accurate mass-produced mechanical calibre which beats at a frequency of 10 vibrations per second, timing to 1/10th of a second.

Zenith Zenith, creator of the El Primero movement in 1969, has teamed up with the Rolling Stones with the launch of the El Primero Chronomaster 1969. The watch is the first in a series of limited edition watches by Zenith. The two chronograph counters, 30-minute at 3 o’clock and 12-hour at 6 o’clock, are bedecked in the same colours as the original El Primero model of 1969. The 12-hour chronograph is also overlaid with the famous Rolling Stones logo, red tongue and lip design. These historic colours are associated with the iconic aperture in the dial over the beating heart of the movement, a

Victorinox A company with the status of a national treasure in Switzerland because of its most legendary product, the Swiss Army knife, Victorinox has just celebrated its 130th anniversary. To mark the special occasion, Victorinox Swiss Army created I.N.O.X, a new watch that pays tribute to the history and industrial know-how of the brand. I.N.O.X demonstrates a level of robustness never before achieved in watch-making. Designed to withstand unusual stress, it’s passed a ruthless battery of 130 strength tests. Longines Based at Saint-Imier, Switzerland, since 1832, Longines celebrates 182 years of non-stop craftsmanship and watch-making expertise that reflects a strong devotion to tradition, elegance and performance. It has generations of experience as the official timekeeper at world championships and as a partner of international sports federations. Longines is a member of The Swatch Group SA, the world’s leading manufacturer of horological products. Now, it has re-issued the successful Longines Heritage 1935 timepiece. The watch was originally created for aviators but went on to prove popular among the general public. This new model has an original look that evokes the timepiece on which it is based. As is typical of watches intended for use in aviation, the matte black dial is decorated with large white Arabic numerals and is coated with Super-LumiNova. omegA omegA master Co-Axial In 2013 Omega created the first truly anti-magnetic watch movement, setting a new quality standard in Swiss mechanical watch-making. The name? OMEGA Master Co-Axial. In 1894 a pocket watch was fitted with the Omega movement – a mechanical movement that changed the industry. Omega has reached many milestones, including the first company, in 1932, to be entrusted with the timing of the Olympic Games, the first watch to be worn on the moon in 1969, the first Central Tourbillon Watch in 1994 – all leading up to 2014’s OMEGA Master Co-Axial. omegA seamaster Aqua Terra 150m collection A tribute to Omega’s rich maritime heritage. The dial design recalls the wooden decks of luxury sailboats. It features a lacquered silvery dial decorated with the Teak Concept pattern and a date window at 3 o’clock. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects

this unique dial. This certified chronometer is powered by the OMEGA Master Co-Axial calibre 8500, which is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss. Two years later, in 2013, Eco-Drive SATELLITE WAVE – AIR was created. Since its inception, the SATELLITE WAVE series has enjoyed accolades from all corners of the earth. BREAKING THE MOULD Musician Toya Delazy is unlike anyone you’ll ever meet she’s a leader, not a follower, and she dances to the beat of her own drum. Julia Mafcher chats to her about style, Joburg, inspirations and indulgences. Photographs Jurie Potgieter

What is it about Joburg you love the most, and why? The cosmopolitan lifestyle, variety, and the constant movement. There’s always something happening. When you’re in Joburg, where do you like to hang out and why? I like to hang out in places that are underground; I keep it on the low-down and hang out mainly with my friends. You can catch me in Greenside – I’m a pint-drinking and pool-playing type of person. Who is your style icon? Princess Lethuxolo Buthelezi, she had an impeccable sense of style. She dressed liberally, combining her culture with modern-day fashion. How would you describe your style? At the core its vintage street wear; I’m calling it PaTTernBlock. You basically wear different patterns, but wisely, so you don’t end up looking like a quilt. Who/what inspires you and why? I’m inspired by travelling. I enjoy seeing the world and being exposed to different cultures. In my opinion, if you grow up in one place you lose out on a lot of different cultures, so my inspiration is triggered by exploring and seeing new things. Which historical figure do you most identify with and why? My great-grandmother Princess Magogo Ka Dinuzulu. She did the unthinkable and broke gender roles by being a praise singer at a time when the role was reserved for men. When everyone was going one way, she thought of an alternative route. She made it happen. She was tenacious and I’m inspired by that – by not just taking what you get, but by putting some thought into it and creating your own trend. What makes you happy? Good food, road tripping, travelling, love, 20 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

the beach… These are a few of my favourite things. What did you buy with your first pay cheque? I bought myself a weighted piano for my studio. As a pianist it’s always been my dream to get one. What are you most proud of and why? At 18 I told my family I was leaving home to focus on a career in music and I actually made it happen. Three years later my debut album, Due Drop, went gold and I won three SAMA Awards. Being nominated at the BET Awards for Best International Act Africa was a huge achievement, as well as recently having the opportunity to perform at a sold-out show at the world-renowned Apollo Theatre in Harlem. We don’t always have to be conventional to be relevant. What do you value most in your friends? They treat me the same. They didn’t change in the way they treat me because of the fame. I love that they are there for me and advise me. What is your life motto? Before you pray, believe. Before you speak, listen. Before you spend, earn. Before you quit, try and before you die, live. What is your most marked characteristic? I’m hard headed. When I face resistance, I believe I’m doing the right thing. I do things for myself, not for the approval of society. They say nothing great ever comes easy, so I’m willing to nurture my dreams. When I look at what I’m doing now, I’m looking way further... One day it will all fall into place and my day will come.

Clothes: Waistcoat, Replay; Top, Top Shop; Toya’s own

A

fter a few quiet months, Toya’s new album, Ascension, dropped at the end of October and her first single, Forbidden Fruit, is receiving major airplay and rave reviews. It’s not surprising, since her authenticity, bubbly personality and energy shine through in her music and her style.

the Spirit of Soweto Local and international award-winning photographer Jodi Bieber gives us insight into her beautiful, thoughtprovoking photographic book, Soweto

Photo Essay

ThE

Bes Of IsstuE

T

he book Soweto came about when a French/Swedish friend, Axel Gylden, made me aware that there were very few contemporary photographic books on Soweto. Early on in my photographic career, shortly after the 1994 elections, I would ask the picture editor of The Star newspaper if I could go and make my own photographs in Soweto. I remember as the light softened in the late afternoon, the gogos (grandmothers in Zulu) on the streets used to say, “Don’t stay too long, the tsotsis (criminals) will be out after dark.” Finally, they would ask me, “From which country are you?” Fast forward a couple of years and, on returning to Soweto with Axel, I knew some things had certainly changed when we visited the new Maponya Mall. The fact that an upmarket shopping centre existed in Soweto had symbolic connotations for me. In my mind it was a symbol of change. It was an image rarely portrayed in the international media. How would I approach my project, with a population of over 900,000 people (consensus of 2001) and approximately 32 suburbs? I knew that one of the references to Soweto in the mind of an outsider would be of Hector Pieterson, who was killed in June 1976. Or perhaps the famous Vilikazi Street, or Baragwanath Hospital, or poverty, HIV/Aids or even the dusty crimeridden streets of Soweto, which I found to be not all true. I saw so much more to Soweto. The book which it finally became is by no means an A-Z of Soweto. Once you start spending time in Soweto you realise how diverse and different we are as a nation. Children play on the pavements, soccer matches are being refereed in the streets, and adults are chatting or gossiping or flirting with neighbours, friends or lovers. Music systems can be found belting out different sounds on the stoeps of two homes next to each other. My favourite meals in Soweto came from being fed at weddings or birthdays. Large pots of meat, pap and salad. I loved the more low-key places like Tshidi’s Place in Dube. I loved Panyaza Shisa Nyama (Pub and Grill) in White City Jabavu. The coolest of the cool in the trendiest cars hang out here. Many of these people moved to the suburbs but return every weekend as they prefer the vibe here. A trend that is developing strongly in Soweto is wanting to be self-sufficient in the township.

The number of sub-cultures among the youth is ever-growing. Fashion, bling and hair is big in Soweto. I decided to photograph at the famous Hector Pieterson school. The main issue at the beginning of term was not politics but girls turning their school uniforms into fashionable clothing items. Girls wearing wigs were singled out that day. They were told to embrace their natural beauty. The people I chose to photograph all had something special that drew me to them. Sowetans, I found, like photographs and they were excited at the possibility of another side of Soweto being shown. Sowetans are incredibly friendly and it takes only a greeting to get invited into someone’s house. I felt very safe in Soweto. Many people said to me that the community became tired of the crime in Soweto and now the police and community are working very close together. It was said that on every street there is a resident who is on the Community Policing Forum.” - Jodi Bieber THE yEAr 1996 WAS A turning point for Jodi. She was chosen to participate in the World Press Masterclass in Holland and started working on assignments for publications such as the New York Times magazine. At the same time, Jodi also worked on special projects for non-profit organisations such as Doctors Without Borders. Over a 10-year period (1994–2004) Jodi focused on South Africa – photographing youth living on the fringes of society. This work finally found itself a home in a book: Between Dogs and Wolves – Growing up with South Africa. It was published and released in five countries in 2006. Soweto was published in partnership with the Goethe Institut and Jacana Media in May 2010. Her latest book, Real Beauty, was released in English/German by Pagina in June 2014. Her iconic photograph of a young mutilated Afghan woman, Aisha, featured on the cover of Time magazine in August 2010 and Jodi was awarded the 54th annual World Press Photo of the year award for the image. She has previously won nine World Press Photo awards. Her latest solo show, Quiet, was shown at the Goodman Gallery. Her mid-career show, Between Darkness and Light, travelled through Germany last year and was at the Wits Art Museum from April to July 2014.She is represented by The Goodman Gallery. www.jodibieber.com www.joburgstyle.co.za | 23

was once asked which part of Japan i was from after serving a client sushi. i laughed and replied that i was not Japanese, i was Blackanese. The name then stuck,” Joburg-based entrepreneur Vusi kunene recalls. fast forward two years, and Vusi is now a proud, and successful, restaurateur with his restaurant in Maboneng, The Blackanese, drawing in large crowds. working his way up through restaurants and coffee shops, Vusi learnt the necessary skills to be in the food industry before launching The Blackanese brand as a mobile food unit at the weekly Market on Main market. “for me, Joburg is about opportunity. i moved here looking for opportunity. and i continue to find it. Joburgers are always willing to experience new things – making this city, and Maboneng in particular, a great spot to be based.”

with a full menu of afro-asian creations, a noodle bar and sushi, The Blackanese has become one of Joburg’s most popular restaurants. “i loved the idea of fusing two cultures, so i decided to do this with my restaurant – to make creative asian dishes for an african palate.” according to the restaurateur, your eyes always eat before your mouth does, so the visual appeal is just an important as the taste. “i put a lot of time and effort into the presentation of my food.” his specialities? “Biltong strawberry sushi with bean curds are very popular. i like creating unusual dishes that at first might confuse my customers but soon after delights them.” Vusi adds, “and you don’t need to use chopsticks. We have just relocated to a space far better suited to our growing size.” ‘Johustleburg’, as Keri affectionately calls it, is where it all happens. “it’s where most head offices are, where most people travel through, and it’s where the money is. We at engage Joe public pride ourselves on being able to have media and influencer relationships across provincial, local, and global borders, and being based in Joburg helps us be at the centre of it all.” an industry leader in the public relations space, Keri thrives in the often high-pressurised pr environment. “an ongoing consideration for me is what defines us and set us apart from the other pr agencies. We decided to focus on growing our brand belief, something i am really passionate about.” What this means for engage Joe public is that all pr strategies are centred on creating real, relevant content. “The cornerstone of our approach is to engage in both a corporate and consumer space in truly meaningful ways. “This was best seen in the first ‘veggie only’ Veggieparty for kids that we created for mccain as well as the recent manhattan ice tea ShoplikeanewYorker campaign.” a fan of loft-living in milpark, you’re likely to find Keri at the StanleybeerYard at 44 Stanley or the melt bar in melville. “Joburg has so much to offer when it comes to dining out. Six years later, she decided to take the plunge. “i always had a passion for events, so i knew this was the perfect fit for me.” based in Sandton, Daniella attributes much of her company’s success to an energetic team that inspires her creativity and ignites her passion. “being in vibrant Joburg helps, too. most of our clients have their headquarters in gauteng, making Joburg the central location for events.” Daniella and her team are kept busy with event organisation, coordination, management, and marketing tasks. “Joburg is hugely competitive and this can be overwhelming at times. The fast pace and, at times, cut-throat industry really keeps us on our toes. however, being thrown in the deep end is the fastest way to learn and this is exactly what we have been able to do here. ” When people think of event planning they often only see the glamorous side. “precision in timing, the close attention to detail, the design and layout of the event, managing guest lists and rSVps, pre- and post-planning, etc. is a lot of work. but on the day of the event, when everything comes together, it is all worth it.”

and if you’re working in financial services on the african content, there is nowhere else to be but Joburg. “Joburg is well situated to run a global business like discovery. our geographical distance from other financial centres matters less today given advances in communication technology. today, timezones matter more than travel time. Joburg shares five hours of the working day with new York and hong Kong – i don’t think we could have run our business as effectively from the Us.” according to Kailas, Joburg’s greatest strength as a financial focal point lies in its dual nature – a city with a formal highincome market that is well developed, as well as an informal, emerging segment. “The interplay of these two worlds means we have an exciting market structure, perfectly positioned for creating innovative financial services and assurance products – which is what we’re all about at discovery. “in the grander scheme of things Joburg is quite a young city, having only been around for just over 100 years. since inception, Joburg has always been the economic engine of south africa and currently a substantial amount of our country’s wealth is generated here.” The thriving financial industry aside, Kailas enjoys living in Joburg. “There is a vibrant energy here: it never feels stagnant. i love that we are constantly reinventing ourselves as a city. There is still so much untapped potential. LLOYD JUSA

BEST OF... SOMMELIER: FIVE HUNDRED It was a few casual vIsIts to the wInelands that whet lloyd Jusa’s appetite for wine. as restaurant manager and sommelier at the award-winning fine dining restaurant five hundred, based at The saxon hotel, lloyd hosts and educates the crème de la crème of Joburg society every day. “during semester breaks, while studying in cape town, I worked as a waiter on the camps Bay beach front where very often the well-heeled tourists enquired about the vinous offerings. This is what prompted me to visit the winelands and hone my wine skills. “other than distinguishing between white and red, dry or off-dry, drinkable or corked, I don’t think my interest extended beyond the basic etiquette. don’t get me wrong: I loved the intimidating side of wine, the ‘whys’ and ‘ifs’, but the holy Grail was not until I saw a Master sommelier do a blind tasting. The almost fanatical descriptions he gave of the four different reds in front him would make almost any corporate-geek-turned-wine-aficionado green with envy.”

BONGANI MAZIBELA

so, what’s it like being a sommelier in Joburg? “The city of Gold; what’s not to love about it? The passion for life, the hunger to succeed, the relentless pursuit of gastronomic delights and supremacy. It’s almost like writing code. at times you only know the end product or destination without much direction and you have to find that perfect balance between intrigue and realism.” lloyd loves creating things and has made it his mission to connect with customers, anticipating their needs and finding the perfect wine to create memories on the dining table. “wine on its own can be wonderful and an experience in itself – like the string section of an orchestra – but it’s somewhat limited in terms of the notes it can play. food can be soulful, powerful and soothing, but again it’s a limited production. It’s the mindful pairing of food and wine that creates the notes and flavours that only a full orchestra can produce.” lloyd says that Joburg is the next big thing when it comes to wine. “The wine culture is surprisingly more developed than the rest of the country. People not only know what they want, but demand the rarest wines that only true devotees can purchase. I love that progressive energy.” so, what is a true wine connoisseur’s favourite wine to drink? “There are so many. If I was banished and confined to an island and given a choice of one wine to take with me, it would have to be the eisen & viljoen normandie 2010 (small boutique winery in franschhoek). It has an earthy tight nose, palate big, round and full, classic wet gravel, cedar and wet tobacco. It has a generous elegance with flavoursome whiffs of mocha, blackcurrant, and a long lingering farewell.”

The conTroversial, many-people-love-To-haTe (buT sTill can’T resist listening to), Gareth cliff announced he was leaving his popular morning show on 5fm earlier this year to a reaction he didn’t even expect himself. The response of sadness and disbelief from his many fans and listeners was overwhelming, he says. “it motivated me even more to create something new for my audience.” Gareth launched – what he calls ‘unradio’ – cliff central in may. after a few teething problems here and there and some initial confusion from the general public, the station seems to have found its feet and has taken off exponentially. listeners can tune in via the social app Wechat or on the website via live streaming. it’s always been Gareth’s goal to branch out and do his own thing. “i think that’s anyone’s goal, really – either because you want to have creative freedom or financial independence – or both.” on the state of broadcasting in south africa at the moment, Gareth says it’s where it should be. “stable but predictable. The time is ripe for change. i spend a lot of time looking at international trends and we’re on target to take the next big leap.” he adds that broadcasting is more power than ever. “We have it on our mobile devices and we can have what we want on demand – this is the exciting thing about living in the 21st century.” Gareth is proudly patriotic and says his number one place to live would be “right here. right now.” “Joburg is the new york of africa, it’s an energy centre. people in the city have things to do and are fired up to do it. There’s a lot of ambition in the air.” in the next few years Gareth intends for cliff central to become the preeminent global content hub for original, diverse, sexy programming of all kinds – visual, audio, blog, meme, and social. What does he love most about his job? “The tremendous energy and excitement that accompanies every time you switch on the mic – that, and the people i work with.”

bonGani mazibela, The ceo of ulwazi Group, is on a roll, sweeping up an array of coveted business awards, from the black business Quarterly award to the latest – entrepreneur of the year. bongani, a civil engineer by trade, confesses to being an entrepreneur at heart, which is why he moved into business. “i always say that if you want to get into business, you must do something you love – get involved with something you’re passionate about and put everything into it! That’s the best business formula for me. “While i’m involved in every aspect of the company, it is important to learn how to delegate and mentor others. a key element in business is delegation – you have to empower your staff so they can learn and grow. ” The businessman is also very passionate about social responsibility and says the matter is very close to his heart. “as a true corporate citizen, you have to plough back into the community. you have to recognise the community’s needs as well and invest back into it. i always say to young people that it doesn’t matter what your background is, look at me – i grew up poor without any parents and look where i am today. if i can do it, so can you. you don’t have to bring your past into your future. yes, we must recognise our past, but you don’t have to always bring it along with you – you need to get rid of the old stuff and move on.”

BEST OF... FASHION DESIGN: LOINCLOTH AND ASHES

The incredible TalenT behind The cloThing label loincloTh and ashes, anisa Mpungwe, says never in her wildest dreams did she think her name would become so well known. “i didn’t even know i’d be making clothes for people outside my family. My goal was never fame-driven, it was about making people feel good about themselves and knowing that with each person i dressed, i’d learn a little bit more about why we dress the way we dress.” visit anisa’s style icon is cameroon’s first lady, chantal biya. “i know many raise their eyebrows w.joburgstyle.co.za

when they see her but i find her style inspiring. beyond its loudness is a message; and that is to be yourself and be yourself confidently and without being apologetic. She is a woman who probably grew up with similar restrictions most of the women in my life that i call ‘mum’ did, yet she has the flair i find very attractive.” What inspires this diverse designer? “i find everything inspiring; a thought, a conversation, a scent, current affairs, you name it. if you look through history, a lot of information is taken from images from different eras. The clothes depict what was happening at that specific time. as long as my inspiration is relevant to its time and still praises the female form, then it’s all good.” anisa says what she loves about Joburg is its authenticity. “its where, if you work hard, all your dreams are made into reality. Working in town really puts my ideas of how fashion should be in perspective and it challenges me a lot. Thinking of what people like to wear and actually knowing what people like are two totally different things. i learned that in Joburg. in the banking district i see women who love a good high heel and a fitted pencil skirt. in the fashion district i see chinese inspired haircuts with side blue dip dies, braids and crop tops. in the design district there are hipsters galore; some are photographers and others are owners of buildings. i mean, what’s not to love here? “We are africans, so we automatically have the confidence and flair to be vocal in our dress sense. and, well... people fly from across the world just to know and understand our culture; if that’s not star power i don’t know what is.”

SOUTH AFRICA’S pIOneeRIng first independent black-owned coffee business, Sihle’s Brew, is based in Randburg and has soared in popularity since it first launched in 2012. Coffee originator, roaster, and barista Sihle Magubane is the man behind the brand and thanks to his close attention to detail – from sourcing and personally selecting the coffee beans to roasting and retailing his products himself – Sihle’s Brew is fast becoming a household name. “My life changed for the better when my coffee adventure began a decade ago. In 2003, by chance and luck, I was selected for a training course at the Ciro Coffee Academy and was able to obtain an International Barista Certificate.” Before this, he worked as a gardener and struggled to support his family. “I fell in love with coffee. And I believe that love was returned as I built up my knowledge in this field.” After gaining the necessary experience, Sihle realised that he didn’t just want to just sell coffee – he wanted to be fully involved in the holistic process of coffee making. For Sihle, Joburg provided the perfect platform for doing this. “A big part of my success has been thanks to living in Joburg. Joburgers have the palate for excellently roasted coffee beans and are hungry, or let’s say thirsty, for artisan coffee. They also have a desire to know more about coffee – how to store it correctly and how to get the most flavour out of the beans, taking the coffee experience back to their own homes and not just reserving it for coffee shop visits. “My coffee is now available from Food Lover’s Market in the nicolway Shopping Centre and a percentage of my profit goes towards training underprivileged potential baristas. I’d love to set up a training centre.”

T

he tea leaves in the tin are shrivelled, almost mummified. But once they hit the warm water, they unfurl slowly like magic. The tea was harvested in spring, explains Patrick Cui, a tea master. “Smell it,” he says, lifting a small cup. “Then drink it slowly. Enjoy every sip. Tea calms the mind and helps you to relax. It’s nature in a cup.” I’m at Norick Interiors in Kramerville. Patrick and his Chinese South African wife, Nora, own this store that specialises in high-end Chinese classical furniture, antiques, ornaments and accessories. He left Beijing for South Africa in the 1990s and Norick Interiors has become his way to share his culture. It’s one of the few Joburg places where you can experience an authentic Chinese tea ceremony. A painting of Lu Yu, the sage of Chinese tea, hangs behind Patrick. In front of him are all the tools of the tea master: different teapots, small cups, spoons and tins of fragrant tea. While learning about the art of drinking tea, Patrick also talks about being Chinese, about growing up with values based on Confucius’ teachings like honesty, loyalty, being hard-working and tolerance. He even asks about the year I was born to share a bit of Chinese astrology. There’s more to Chinese culture in Joburg than its many China malls. So, inspired by Patrick, I set out to learn more, especially from those who have called the city home for as long as they can remember.

A tale of two Chinatowns

The city has a large and established Chinese community with between 300,000 and 400,000 people. Its history dates back to the days when Chinese were brought to the city to provide cheap labour on the mines. Since then, numerous families have settled here. In the 1970s and 80s specifically, the city saw an influx of Taiwanese people, and in the 90s, Chinese from mainland China started to arrive. Together, they have helped to give Joburg one of its claims to fame – two Chinatowns. Mandarin becomes the language of choice once you pass through the impressive arches of New Chinatown on Derick Avenue in Cyrildene. This street is packed with Chinese supermarkets, exotic vegetable stalls, beauty salons, IT stores, pearl milk tea shops and much more, catering for a growing community, which has been given a

jumpstart with the new arrivals from mainland China. Across town in Commissioner street, you’ll find Old Chinatown. This is where the city’s first Chinese community settled, many of whom can trace their roots to the Guangdong province in southern China. They speak Cantonese or Hakka and the subsequent generations identify themselves as Chinese South Africans. Swallows Inn, Joburg’s oldest Chinese restaurant, is still here, as well as various heritage buildings (look out for the blue plaques). Ufrieda Ho, author of Paper Sons and Daughters – Growing up Chinese in South Africa, calls it the Chinatown of her childhood. “These days, the influx of Chinese people is helping to make the local culture more diverse,” she says. “But one thing you have to keep in mind is that there are communities within communities. Culture will also always be very personal. You decide what you want to hold onto.” Wanting to know more, I visited an Old Chinatown stalwart, the Sui Hing Hong supermarket, run by Walter Pon and his parents before him. They immigrated to Joburg at the beginning of the WWII and Walter, who has become one of the most respected members of the Chinese community, was born here. At Sui Hing Hong you can buy anything from Chinese herbs and kung fu shoes to rice and red ‘lucky’ papers with ornate golden lettering. Walter describes the latter as visual reminders of the good things that we all want in life. “Yes, we use these papers and put them up everywhere. And red means luck,” a Chinese lady at Sui Hing Hong told me earlier, pointing at some on the walls in the shop. “You can call the Chinese superstitious, or perhaps it’s rather a way to think positively,” laughs Walter, when we meet at his brother’s fireworks shop across the road from Sui Hing Hong. He explains that Chinese people believe that fireworks chase away bad spirits. The negative has to make way for something positive.

Rice, respect and the dragon dance

Walter doesn’t look his 74 years. His secret is drinking green tea and eating plenty of rice. “I’m Chinese, I love my rice,” he says and smiles. He also does tai chi, a Chinese martial art, but quickly points out that he’s “very bad it”. Nonetheless, he gets up to provide an impromptu demonstration. He explains that local Chinese culture has become

very Westernised. Yet, things such as respect, especially for elders, are all mentioned by the people I spoke to. Walter reckons that if I wanted to be strict about it, I should actually call him Mr Pon. Values such as these are why Emma Chen, the owner of The Red Chamber in Hyde Park, says she loves being Chinese. She has been living in Joburg since the 80s and her restaurant is regarded as one of the best in the city. “My generation has been taught to be very considerate and not to impose on others. In Chinese culture, there’s also a great emphasis on being reciprocal, ” she mentions. ‘Face’ is another critical aspect. You shouldn’t lose ‘face’ or show anger or irritation or let someone else do so, as this can negatively impact your relationship, Patrick mentioned earlier. No matter how Westernised the culture becomes, some traditions are kept. Like clan dinners where ancestors are remembered, or handing out red envelopes with money to kids at Chinese New Year celebrations. Eating noodles (chow mein) on your birthday, because it signifies a long life. Or always serving tea with both hands as a sign of respect and in turn tapping the table to say thanks if you’re the recipient. “And if you’re Chinese, you’ll also always be prepared to welcome more people to your table,” says Bridget Ah Ling. Bridget has been involved in lion and dragon dancing for 12 years. She explains that the lion dance signifies protection and is performed to chase away evil spirits and bless businesses. The auspicious dragon dance is all about celebration. Bridget emphasises that you have to know the basics of kung fu – “not karate, that’s Japanese” – if you’re going to do these dances right.

Getting your Chinese on

“You may observe certain Chinese ways of doing things when you’re eating in a restaurant or when you’re walking in Cyrildene, but you won’t necessarily pick up on the culture,” says Emma. “So my advice is to befriend a Chinese person.” The New Year celebrations, which take place in February 2015, should provide ample opportunity to do exactly that. These festivals include dragon and lion dancing, traditional music and fireworks. It’s a chance to get more insight into being Chinese in our city.

Eric Bornman and Gina Borthwick left Cape Town to start their own publishing company, Ballyhoo Media, in the City of Gold. They shared their story about where it all began and why they decided it was time to give the company a facelift. Photographs Dion Viljoen HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

It had always been Gina and Eric’s dream to start a publishing company. “The company was established in 2007 with the vision to start our own magazine titles.” They wanted to start a magazine centred on the Joburg standard of living. It was here that the idea behind Joburg Style was conceptualised. “We believed it would be best to get ourselves to Joburg, and look for an opportunity to go at it alone,” explains Eric. In 2007 on 15 October, Ballyhoo Media finally came to life, with both Gina and Eric starting off as full-time employees. They were given a contract to sell the advertising space in the University of Stellenbosch’s business journals. During the first production of Joburg Style, the founders sold advertising space, a field in which they have a world of experience. However, since they were the only employees, Gina had to handle the major part of the editorial content. The first edition of the magazine went on shelf at the beginning of May 2008. “The launch issue was fully supported by the City of Joburg. They loved the idea of a magazine dedicated to the upliftment of the city’s image and reporting on the positive side of things.” This was no mean feat for a magazine whose office was a bedroom at Gina’s parents’ house. One of the biggest challenges they had to face was waiting for their landline. This was debilitating because their jobs mainly revolved around a telephonic advertising sales approach. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, they had to share a laptop with a dreary internet connection speed. And that’s how this now award-winning publishing company began.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…

After publishing the first issue of the magazine, the founders moved. Once again, the second bedroom assumed the role of an office. At this point the company was making enough money to employ their first in-house designer, Tumi Sibambo, who’s still with the company today. “We bought a set of second-hand workstations and set them up in a very tidy space but it wasn’t long before the lounge, dining and TV room became sales offices and admin areas.” With the company having made it past the two-year mark, they bought premises in Parkhurst, where the offices are located today. “We did some initial structural renovations to the building to better suit our purposes, and this is the same office space that we are now changing.”

BALLYHOO GETS A FACELIFT

The business generates content for publications across the print and digital platforms in a rapidly changing industry that requires innovation and creativity to stay relevant. “We’ve had

to turn all the space available at our disposal into fully functional offices as the company continues to grow, but when you look at an ad agency setup and other companies in the design and creative industries, they always have very cool offices that are designed to stimulate creativity. As we enter our eighth year, we thought it would be fitting to create a more visually stimulating space with some creative elements that can inspire us to greater heights.” Eric has a penchant for fine art. So it will come as no surprise that Ballyhoo Media’s facelift is a permanent art exhibit featuring work by local artists. “We featured these artists in our recent Arts & Culture edition and they graciously agreed to donate some pieces to the cause.” Every room has been designed around a central piece of art, with the reception and boardroom as gallery space for other work. People who are interested in the art on display have been directed to the artists. Some of the pieces have already been sold. So what’s next for Ballhyhoo Media? “One day, when we buy the buildings around us and fulfil the vision we have for the Ballyhoo Media campus, complete with skybridge and in-house coffee shop/restaurant, we will have gone full circle! I still sit with my sales team but look forward to one day driving the business from a corner office with a view.” www.joburgstyle.co.za | 53

THE PEOPLE WHO MADE IT HAPPEN

IT IS Design created and project managed the new Ballyhoo Media office revamp. We chatted to Darren Bester about the process. How did you get involved in this project? We were contacted by Greenside Design Centre to see if we would be interested in assisting the publishing company with their offices. I met with Eric and loved the idea of the talent swop he was proposing. How did you come up with the specific concepts for each room? The main focus for the entire concept was the amazing collaboration between Ballyhoo Media and up-and-coming artists. We were seduced by the wonderful artwork and wanted this to be the focal point of each space. This allowed for the spaces to simply evolve from this starting point into plays on colour and texture, while some of the elements became a play on the techniques adopted by the various artists. We wanted to create interesting spaces where creativity could be birthed but also where the art could ‘live’. What were the main challenges and why? The limited budget is always a concern but it requires that we come up with effective solutions to fit the budget. What has been the most exciting part of this project? When we had to do the Joburg skyline technique in the sales department. We knew the effect we wanted would be tricky but we did not think we would have so much fun doing it. The masking of the wall was time consuming and laborious but when the time came to add the ‘Pollock’ type effect, it was a really freeing experience. We often get bogged down in our day-to-day design work but I saw a fire and sparkling light in my team’s eyes as we splashed, laughed and enjoyed creating the technique. The true joy was when we removed the mask the following day to reveal the skyline. We have all grown to love this iconic symbol of our city but this time we truly appreciated it. It is always important to have fun when you are creating, and that was definitely the highlight of the project for me. What do you think of the finished product? Has it met your 54 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

expectations? I am happy with the finished product so far but my view does not really count. A true reflection of a successful space is if the end user is able to grow and enhance the space further. I think that with time the staff will add their stamp to the interior and then it will truly be a space to create in. I look forward to coming back in a few months to see how everyone is enjoying their spaces. IT IS Design 011 708 5882 MAGICODE (PTY ) LTD, the innovative and design-oriented office furniture suppliers and space planners, provided the colourful and space-effective furniture for the three teams of Ballyhoo Media. MAGICODE provides services for all types of businesses, including corporates, government facilities, small and medium enterprises, and various private residential properties. Over the years the company has grown from strength to strength in satisfying and fulfilling their clients’ needs with high levels of service and excellent quality products. Their vision is to continuously create unique office environments for employer and employee. The company provides products, services, and designs which provide clients with full value for their money and which maximise the workplace environment. In terms of social responsibility, MAGICODE sources, where possible, first and foremost from local manufacturers, products that are durable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. We spoke to Claudia Panzeri about the process. What was the brief given to you? Eric stated the amount of desks that were required and explained that the aim was to create a creative environment for the staff at Ballyhoo Media to work comfortably in. Why does the specific furniture chosen work in this space? The sales office room configuration called for a long, narrow work area, which is what we provided. The finance office is small and had to accommodate three people. This area required space planning and furniture design, which we designed to work well in the space. The design and editorial office required a more modern feel and look, giving room for personal creativity. We created this feel in a restricted space. We chose the mesh

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE DELICIOUS THAN SOMETHING CREAMY AND ICY WHEN THE WARM WEATHER HITS? WORDS AND STYLING BY LEILA SAFFARIAN. PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRAEME WYLIE Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry are proving to be the favourite flavour choices, as well as a fruity, zesty and refreshing lemon variety. Making your own ice cream and lollies from scratch is as easy as one, two, three…

Food

Very Chocolatey Ice Cream Ingredients 250g milk chocolate 150g dark chocolate 100g unsalted butter 150g castor sugar 150ml water 4 large egg yolks 2 cups (500ml) double cream Method 1. Break the chocolate and place it in a heat-proof glass bowl, along with the butter, over a pan of simmering water (the bottom of the bowl shouldn’t touch the water). Stir until melted and remove from the heat. 2. In a small saucepan, dissolve the sugar with the water. Increase the heat and boil for 5-6 minutes until a light syrup forms. 3. To test if the syrup is ready, place a small drop of syrup onto a cold plate. If a thread forms when stretched between your fingers, the syrup is ready. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. 4. Using an electric whisk, beat the egg yolks in a large bowl. Slowly start adding the warm syrup. Continue mixing until the mixture is thick, pale and mousse-like. 5. Add the melted chocolate and mix well to combine. 6. Place the mixture into an ice cream machine and churn until frozen. 7. Serve the rich ice cream in sugar cones with loads of coloured sprinkles.

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream Ingredients 6 egg yolks 2 tbsp (30ml) castor sugar 2 cups (500ml) milk 1 vanilla bean, split or 2 tsp (10ml) vanilla bean paste 300ml double thick cream Method 1. Place the egg yolks and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until thick and pale. 2. Place the milk in a medium saucepan and add the vanilla. Heat over medium heat until scalding point. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 10 minutes. Discard pod if using a vanilla pod and reheat the milk to scalding point.

3. Strain the warm milk over the egg mixture and beat until just combined. Return the mixture to a clean saucepan and place over a low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Do not boil. 4. Pour the custard into a bowl and place over a bowl of ice to cool. Cover the surface of the custard with cling film to prevent a skin from forming. Place in the refrigerator to chill completely. 5. Whisk the cream into the cold custard until well combined and pour into an ice cream machine. Churn until frozen. 6. Remove the ice cream from the freezer, beat with an electric hand mixer until smooth, then return to the freezer. Repeat this step 2 or 3 more times (beating the ice cream prevents the formation of ice crystals). 7. Serve the creamy ice cream with fresh blueberries for a quick and easy dessert. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 59

lthough there are many strict rules for winemaking, Boschendal winemaker Lizelle Gerber says the most important rule is to respect what nature has given us, and to protect the flavours of the grapes as they are brought to the cellar. Legend has it that many years ago an unknown man forgot a bunch of grapes in a jar and they began to ferment. Invited by the aroma, he took a sip and minutes later he was laughing. He asked his friends to try the merry berry juice, and that is how the first wine was made – or so the story goes, according to Lizelle. Whether you choose to believe it or not, the universal truth is wine is one of the most loved drinks across the globe. Black ElEphant VintnErs Black Elephant Vintners aren’t your typical wine producers on the outskirts of the Franschhoek village. They introduce fun into serious winemaking while still capturing the taste and terroir of the Franschhoek valley in their wines. So how did it begin? Following on from the sale of Black Elephant Investment Holdings’ stake in Noah Financial Innovation in 2011, cofounder Kevin Swart uprooted his family and moved from Joburg to Franschhoek where he purchased a boutique wine farm, La Petite Vigne. Six months later, his business partner and co-founder of Black Elephant Investment Holdings, Raymond Ndlovu, followed suit and the Ndlovus joined the Swarts. Having contracted Amistad Wine Company to assist in the winemaking at La Petite Vigne, Kevin set about learning the art and quandaries of winemaking while Raymond joined Invenfin to further hone his passion for business and private equity. A chance discussion in November 2012 between Black Elephant and Amistad lead to the joining together of Black Elephant’s business skills and the Amistad winemaking expertise. In January 2013, winemaker Jacques Wentzel joined the team, and Black Elephant Vintners was created. Black Elephant Vintners produces and represents premium wines from their own barrels and other boutique estates that share their wine style and philosophy. The company produces quality wines that embody the region, the terroir and character of the grape. The brands reflect a raw, uncompromising and uncomplicated winemaking style that communicates their passion and commitment to the process of untainted winemaking. The labels capture and celebrate the character and personality of each blend, with each wine becoming a performance on its own. The company, the people and its wines are strong in character and personality. The overall result is a wine performance that is unique and not necessarily repeated – a wine performance that is unplugged. www.bevintners.co.za www.joburgstyle.co.za | 69

ONCE UPON A THREEPOINTED STAR

M

y late friend Giempie Wardien, an erstwhile gammat vannie Kaap – his choice of words, not mine! – who had moved to Joburg in pursuit of his personal fortune, had a thing for Mercedes-Benz cars. He would spend hours ogling late model Mercs at places like Carcol Executive Auto in Greenside (those were the days before you could google just about anything) and hatch his plans. Once his savings allowed it, Giempie would buy a dilapidated, mid-60s 220S from someone who knew someone who knew a Karoo sheep farmer, and restore it to a pristine condition. It would take him a while to get it back on the road, but eventually he would call to invite me for a drive from his home in Maraisburg along Commando Road and Empire Road, to show off the beauty in town. It had chrome bumpers and decorative strips running the length of its tail fins – and white-wall tyres, of course.

No longer content to be a mere status symbol, Mercedes-Benz is producing muscular sportscars such as the new AMG GT. Jongi S’korokoro is suitably bedazzled

In addition, it wasn’t resprayed in black, navy blue, bottle green or an anemic beige (the colours of choice in those staid, conservative days when the three-pointed star was the ultimate status symbol), but a rather bright and garish gold, in deference both to the city Giempie loved to call home and his Malay lineage. On the dashboard were all kinds of bling, including a decorative nodding dog, and the seats were quite a sight, bedecked in lime green and pink covers crocheted by Mrs Wardien. Approaching the leafier (and in those days mostly whites-only) suburbs of Auckland Park and Melville, Giempie would lean over towards me, crack a mischievous smile – in the process revealing a gold-capped front tooth – and say, “How about some fun, captain?” He would wilfully swing the Merc towards the prejudicial gates of the Johannesburg Country Club, much to the consternation of the guards on duty. They

would turn us away, of course, but Giempie always loved scoring an innocuous point, cackling at them out the window as he gunned the golden mothership for the exit. I sometimes wonder what he would have thought of modern Mercs, especially given the new direction the company has taken. Ever since it bought AMG (an once-independent engine production and development company that specialises in tuning Mercedes-Benz cars) in 1990 and entered the Formula 1 racing circus, first as an engine supplier to McLaren and later purchasing the Brawn F1 outfit to establish its own works team, the brand has become more synonymous with high performance and edgy design than stately decorum. Out went its traditionally restrained design language and emphasis on safety measures, and in came a raft of models boasting more steroidal, testosterone-fuelled features. Many aspects of a storied history The new AMG GT, left, a Porsche 911 slayer; motivated by an exceptional hybrid powertrain, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, above, has been unstoppable; Karl Benz created the first petrol-powered car, bottom left, in January 1886 – a legacy that gave rise to the famous emblem and bonnet decoration, bottom left.

SLS gullwing trumpeted this new dawn, the brand couldn’t have wished for more exquisite timing in launching their latest scorcher. Not only does the new AMG GT twitches its figurative flared nostrils and snorts at the prospect of dethroning the venerable Porsche 911 from the top of the sports car pile, but its debut coincides with Mercedes winning its first outright F1 championship title since 1955. It’s a milestone almost as momentous as Karl Benz’s creation of the first petrolpowered car in January 1886, and Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach’s conversion of a stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine later that year. The Mercedes automobile, incidentally, was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler (it was named after the daughter of a board member). The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the merger of Benz’s and Daimler’s

businesses into the Daimler-Benz company. Many moons later, another merger (this time an ill-fated dalliance between Daimler and Chrysler) seriously dented Merc’s enviable reputation for reliability and durability. Beset with the challenge of making the transatlantic corporate marriage work, it took its eye off the ball, as it were, inadvertently leading to plummeting quality ratings in the late 90s and early 2000s. Happily the other pillar of Merc’s reputation – innovation – remained resolute and helped the brand forge ahead once more. These days, the Stuttgart operation can hardly put a foot wrong. Having sorted the reliability issues with its mainstream passenger vehicles, its flagship S-Class (laden with the latest technological gizmos and opulent features) has sold a record 100,000 models in its first year of production. And the smaller C-Class is receiving plaudits for sporting the most luxurious cabin in its segment.

Not to be outdone, the go-faster division, AMG, recently announced buying a 25 percent stake in Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta, giving it access to the technical know-how behind lightweight threecylinder engines. With BMW having taken the lead in this regard with its i8 and i3 subbrands, drawing as it did on the expertise of its own motorcycle division, and Audi having acquired Ducati a year or so ago, the race to achieve a convergence of mobility systems is heating up between the top three premium brands. The Mercs of today and tomorrow may not quite resemble the kind of elegant models Giempie Wardien used to dream about, but such was his love of the marque that I doubt he would have minded it. If nothing else, the addition of more chrome (fake or not!), more horsepower, bolder paint jobs and more expressive wheel rims would have pleased him tremendously. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 73

If roadsters and convertibles are increasingly falling out of favour, Mazda does not seem to care. Jongi S’korokoro applauds its new MX-5 for being a fresh take on a timeless classic

et’s start with a bit of entertainment trivia. If you’re too young to know the song The Ballad of Lucy Jordan by Marianne Faithful and have never seen the movie Thelma & Louise, then you probably won’t understand why the convertible is so indelibly etched in the collective Western consciousness. At the age of 37, sung Ms Faithful with her famously rasping vocal chords, Lucy Jordan realised she’d never drive in a sports car (read convertible or roadster) through the streets of Paris with the warm wind in her hair. The poor tortured soul was trapped in the convention of marriage, children and suburbia; if you’re curious about what happened to her, gun for Google or yank the YouTube chain. But for a wall-to-wall, full-power automotive metaphor, go straight to Thelma & Louise, an epic buddy movie with a strong feminist message and a 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible that symbolises the spirit of rebellion and joys of the open road. Director Ridley Scott got it down pat – right down to a soundtrack that featured, among others, Ms Faithful’s plaintive song. When the late Shel Silverstein penned the lyrics of The Ballad of Lucy Jordan, he obviously understood the collective yearning for a poetic, carefree, wind-in-your-hair kind of lifestyle that the convertible invokes. This raises the question why, if most of us feel instinctively called to it, so few manufacturers seem to care. In the 1960s and 70s, some British brands like MG, Triumph and Jaguar did a fairly good job of it – but look what’s become of them! The Yankees used to make relatively cheap convertibles (such as said Ford Thunderbird) that were accessible to the public, but the double obsession with safety and performance has been the death of them. As for the Germans, they wickedly turned the convertible into a fiefdom of status; an expensive luxury available chiefly to the ngamlas

of Saxonwold, Westcliff and Sandton. To add insult to injury, Audi won’t even send the brilliant new TT Roadster our way, irrespective of our perceived monetary might, though BMW will thankfully make some amends on behalf of their Teutonic brethren by releasing the 2-Series Convertible. It will, of course, cost an arm and a leg, though not as much as the 4-Series drop top or the much acclaimed, and super desirable, Porsche Boxster. With Jozi’s warm summer months ahead of us, I’d love to get my hands on a bespoke Jaguar F-Type Project 7. Fat chance! Try as I might, I can’t even get Jaguar to lend me a standard F-Type convertible, let alone their latest siren call to open-air ecstasy. And Alfa Romeo’s hugely covetable 4C Spider sadly won’t make it to our showrooms for at least another year. Which brings us to Mazda and its legendary MX-5. First launched 25 years ago, the MX-5 is to the motoring public what the French revolution was to democracy. A more egalitarian convertible – or roadster, if you like – has yet to see the light. And the good news is that the fourth iteration of this iconic model has not only been put on a diet (making it more agile and economical) but will soon spearhead the Japanese brand’s long overdue relaunch in South Africa. For those of us who still care about affordable automotive fun, this is great news. And seeing that I’m well beyond the age of 37 and have only ever travelled through Paris in a dreary cab, I can’t wait to take the new MX-5 on a test drive to Parys instead. Haak Vrystaat! – as my passionate, rugby-watching Afrikaans friends are prone to shout. And viva Mazda, viva! Its perseverance, despite slumping global convertible sales, is worthy of a celebratory toyi-toyi. >> For more automotive fun, visit

IN THE CITY Whoever says there’s nothing to do in Joburg over the summer holidays clearly don’t have their facts straight. In fact, there’s no time like the present to explore the City of Gold

F

or the second year in a row, Joburg is the most popular destination city in Africa, followed by Cape Town, according to the 2014 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. This is a huge achievement, one that Joburgers are extremely proud of, giving locals and foreigners even more of a reason to enjoy the city to its fullest. Joburg Style, together with Joburg Tourism, have put together a comprehensive A-Z list of what you need to do when visiting Egoli. 12 DECADES HOTEL The hotel pays homage to the city’s history. With rooms conceptualised by some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists and designers, it traces the history of Joburg from 1886 to 2006. ALEXANDRA TOWNSHIP Known as Alex to most, it was established in 1912 on land owned by a farmer, Mr Papenfus, who tried to establish a white residential township there, naming it after his wife Alexandra. However, because it was, at the time, a considerable distance from the city centre, this was not a great success. Consequently, in 1912 Alexandra was proclaimed a so-called ‘native township’. The fact that the township was proclaimed before the South African 1913 Land Act, meant it was one of the few urban areas in the country where black people could own land under a freehold title. ARTS ON MAIN A multiple creative experience in one venue. Features include a restaurant, event and exhibition spaces, an outdoor cinema and a rooftop bar. Developed in a newly converted early 1900s bonded warehouse, Arts on Main aims to preserve the historical aspects of the building and contribute to the Joburg CBD’s urban regeneration.

BIKING THROUGH SOWETO Experience Soweto on two wheels. Go out for a few hours, a half-day or full-day bicycle ride, around the streets of Soweto. Visit historical sites, meet people, sit down and have a drink at the shebeen, and enjoy a delicious local lunch. BILL HARROP BALLOON SAFARI It’s sunrise and the silence of flight is punctuated only by the occasional blast of powerful burners and the faint call of a bird or animal far beneath. The thrill is indescribable. After landing, savour a delectable and generous champagne breakfast at the new and beautifully appointed club house, pavilion and restaurant, where you’ll be filled with the warmest memories. CARLTON CENTRE TOP OF AFRICA The Carlton Centre is the tallest building in Africa, hence the ‘Top of Africa’. It was the tallest building in the southern hemisphere when it was originally completed. The building houses both offices and shops, and has over 46% of the floor area below ground level. GAUTRAIN STATION The Gautrain has made many locals’, as well as tourists’, lives a lot easier. It travels at a maximum speed of 180km per hour and links the airport to various stations around the city in just under 12 minutes. LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE Guests are taken to the Ndebele village where a welcome by all the people of Lesedi takes place. The programme begins with a multimedia presentation on the history and origins of today’s Rainbow Nation, followed by a guided tour of the five homesteads. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 85

LORENZO NASSIMBENI, CITY BELOW THE NIROX PROJECTS

18 January – 10 February 2015 City Below is an exhibition exploring and exposing the existing subterranean architecture of the city of Johannesburg. The exhibition will see the unveiling of an Invisible or Imagined City represented in the form of a large mural. This showcase is composed of a layering of subterranean spatial elements inspired by the writings of Italo Calvino. His narrative is an extension of the Drawing on Origins Workshop hosted by the NIROX Foundation and GIFA (Gauteng Institute for Architecture) in 2012. The workshop saw the creation of Nassimbeni’s first Invisible or Imagined City, based upon the architecture of the caves of the Cradle of Humankind. In City Below, Nassimbeni extends the lines representing the organic spaces below the surface of the Cradle of Humankind, to the subterranean treasures of the CBD of Johannesburg, in the creation of a second Invisible or Imagined City. These treasures take the form of unused tunnels, decommissioned mine shafts, storm water drainage networks and urban caves. www.niroxarts.com

Spend lazy afternoons wining, dining, and relaxing at the beautiful Longridge Wine Estate

THE ESTATE The eye catching seasonal transition of the view never seizes to leave a lasting impression – rolling hills clad in greens, hues of sand, caramel and splashes of blue. The glistening bay, almost resembling mirrors, compel visitors to linger longer. With warmer weather on the way Longridge invites you to join them on the gorgeous outside terrace where oversized couches welcome visitors to take in the scenery and enjoy a glass of wine until dinner calls. THE WINE Organic agriculture and natural wine making processes, according to century-old winemaking traditions of natural fermentations, no fining, no filtration, and low sulpher additions, set these award winning wines apart. It’s an art rather than a mass produced product. Cellar master Jasper Raats and his team are dedicated to cultivating the soils in a natural way to ensure outstanding grapes by not making use of any herbicides, chemical sprays or pesticides on the farm. The end of October saw three new releases in the portfolio of wines under the Ultra Premium label – an exceptional Vouvray-styled “Ou Steen” Demi Sec Chenin Blanc from low yielding historic vineyards and a Bordeaux inspired red blend – the 2012 Ekliptika, together with the 2009 Longridge Vintage Reserve Brut. Early indications are that these newcomers will continue the farm’s reputation for producing award-winning wines with four and a half stars being award to both the Brut and the Ekliptika in the 2015 John Platter Wine guide as well as top scores awarded by Jancis Robinson MW. THE RESTAURANT It’s not only in the changing scenery that we know warmer weather is on its way – we can tell by the way rich, creamy soups and warm starters are making way for fresh red salads, carpaccio duo with mustard panacotta, venison and summer styled beef fillet. Its gourmet al fresco with a view. The cuisine is inspired by the freshest seasonal produce from the farm’s organic garden. Tripadvisor granted a “Service of Excellence” award to the restaurant for the second consecutive year, based purely on guest’s feedback. The restaurant also caters for intimate affairs such as weddings and birthday celebrations, with a private facility situated upstairs offering an almost 360 degree view of the vineyard clad hills, glimmering False Bay and of course the Mother City and her Table Mountain.

CONSTITUTION HILL

Nowhere can the story of South Africa’s turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. This National Heritage site has witnessed over a century of South Africa’s history. From soldiers who fought in the Anglo Boer War at the turn of the century, political prisoners and resistors, to the repressive apartheid regime, the youth caught up in the Soweto Uprising and the dawn of democracy, Constitution Hill has witnessed it all. LILIESLEAF FARM

In the early 1960’s, Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia provided the perfect ‘safe house’ from which leaders of Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) — meaning ‘the Spear of the Nation’ — could operate. It was, to all intents and purposes, an operational farm and the black people seen on the farm were, to the world around them, labourers employed to do the farm work. Nobody was aware of the important work that was done here and the place of refuge it provided for the ANC leaders. In July 1963, police raided the farm and arrested Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela and other members. The capture of key leaders and discovery of the operation ‘Mayibuye’ (plans to overthrow the South African Government through violence), led to the Rivonia Trial. It’s a place of fascinating historical insight. www.liliesleaf.co.za

Our top 10 Joburg steakhouses

THE LOCAL GRILL

The food is well prepared and presented with care. It’s no wonder they have been bagging one Steakhouse Award after another for the past three years. And this year they won both The Wolftrap and Eat Out awards. They’ve been voted the number-three restaurant in Joburg by Diners Rossouws Guide. We absolutely love their dependability. www.localgrill.co.za

THE BULL RUN

Situated in Sandton CBD, the Bull Run is famous for their tasty chunks of beef. Try their signature Jalapeno and Feta Fillet. For those who don’t like it too hot, we recommend a delicious plain fillet, with the restaurant’s famous scrumptious mash and some pepper sauce. The food is offered with no complicated processes, what you see is what you get. There’s also an in-house butchery. www.thebullrun.co.za

TRUMPS GRILL

Trumps Grill, situated at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, is famous for its cushy dining, mouth-watering food and laid-back ambience. This steakhouse holds the number-one spot for its sales of Karan beef. This is where you should go when you’re looking for pure beef, be it steaks or burgers. www.trumps-grill.com

THE BUTCHER SHOP AND GRILL

The only complaint you’ll ever have when eating at The Butcher Shop and Grill is that their portions are too large. Even so, the bulkiness does not compromise on the tastiness of the meat. Their food comes with a choice of a fresh salad or equally fresh veggies. You’ll find little to fault at this restaurant. www.thebutchershop.co.za

ALPINE RESTAURANT

Conveniently situated on 83 Braam Fischer Drive, Ferndale, is a gem called Alpine Restaurant & Butchery. Take your time to enjoy their juicy cuts of dry aged beef, soaking in the elegant ambience. THE GRILLHOUSE

Meat lovers will absolutely love The Grillhouse and their scrumptious T-bone steaks. Another favourite dish is their fillet on the bone; it simply melts in your mouth. Pop into The Grillhouse, in Rosebank or in Sandton. www.thegrillhouse.co.za

Since it’s inception in 1984, Thunder Gun has been serving huge chunks of juicy beef. We adore this steakhouse for their consistency. You’re assured a scrumptious meal and efficient service.
