It’s always very stressful this time of year, and I question whether I should get the flu vaccine or not. There are the ‘haves’ (those who got the flu injection) and the ‘have nots’ –and don’t tell a ‘have’ you’re a ‘have not’, as they won’t quite be able to quash that slight look of judgment. In other big news, I recently got married and my wedding day was absolutely wonderful, I couldn’t have asked for anything more magical. So, I’m now Mrs Rice. Yes, like Tastic. Which brings me to this beautiful issue of Joburg Style; welcome to all things design! It’s the second time we’ve done a design issue and it’s one of my favourites, mainly

because of all the creative people we celebrate. Starting with the cover: Sindiso Nyoni aka RIOT did an amazing blueprintinspired illustration. It helped that we had a fabulous cover star, ProVerb. What a genuine, fun-loving guy with absolutely no airs and graces about him. I chat to him about why he feels he isn’t ‘done’ yet and what he’d still like to achieve. Our photo essay S’kop might take you aback and will have you look twice, which is exactly the aim. The world of Joburg’s underground butchers is indeed a hard, survival-of-the-fittest, fight-everyday kind of world. Ever thought about how much more we could be doing with our paper? Tebogo Thekiso, aka ProVerb, has come a long way since his childhood days in Kimberley. But his work is not yet done, not by a long shot. The hip hop artist, producer, presenter and entertainer sat down with Julia Rice to answer some tough questions about his past, present and future ow and where did you start out in the entertainment industry? ere is a story not just about an interesting and tough line of work, but about business connections and how to get things done, how to operate below the radar and how to make things work against fairly debilitating odds. In a disused parking garage within the heart of Joburg’s inner city, an informal and almost medieval trade in the flesh, bones and skins of cow heads is underway. Informal butchers in an environment consisting of smoke, darkness, blood and rats, undertake the fierce chopping of flesh. Heads arrive in shopping trolleys. They are bought at a nearby butchery and are sent by customers who will pay R10 per head for the cutting service. “On a good day I chop 60 heads,” a butcher says as he slams his axe repeatedly into one of the three flesh-covered skulls that are being stripped at the wooden industrial cable spool; the butchers’ block. The surface is barely large enough to accommodate these heads but three other butchers join and now four bare arms and four axes pummel flesh, fat and skin in a stampede of blows. As the meat is loosened, it’s tossed into gaping bags at the butchers’ feet. Occasionally a butcher pauses to talk to someone or to buy something from the vendor who wanders past with a tray of sweets and loose cigarettes. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 27

TODAY YOU WOULD HAVE CONNECTED WITH PAPER – THE EVERYDAY MATERIAL THAT IS OFTEN HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT – SEVERAL TIMES. WONDERFUL WOOD There’s something particularly special about paper. It’s made from trees. Trees are made up of wood. Wood is made up of lignin and cellulose, a long chain of linked sugar molecules that give it its remarkable strength. Although paper and wood have been around since time immemorial, scientists are still making fundamental discoveries on the uses of this high-tech fibre made from nature’s building block, cellulose. Believe it or not, more technology goes into paper than flying a Boeing. According to Fredrik Rosen, director for market strategy at Swedish research institute Innventia, there’s a clear trend towards cellulose composites and packaging made from cellulose-based materials. This includes going ‘beyond the box’ – traditionally made from cellulose or paper – towards investigating how nanocellulose could be used as an oxygen barrier instead of aluminium, making this morning’s milk carton easier to recycle. RENEWING OUR RESPECT FOR PAPER Paper is right up there as a renewable and recyclable resource. In South

Africa, trees are farmed, harvested and replanted for the purposes of making pulp and paper products. These plantations absorb atmospheric ‘uglies’ like carbon dioxide (CO2) and release life-giving oxygen into the atmosphere. Although some CO2 is emitted in the papermaking process, absorption balances out emissions, making paper production at the very least carbon neutral. Carbon is locked in paper – from books to boxes – for as long as it’s recycled. This can be up to seven times. The renewability of paper is a message that organisations like the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA) and its allies the world over are shouting ‘from the treetops’. “The South African paper industry plants around 260,000 trees a day. Only 9% of the total plantation is harvested annually and this is replanted within the same year,” says PAMSA executive director Jane Molony. “The fact that we continually replant saplings makes paper a completely renewable resource.” DESIGNING FOR A CIRCULAR ECONOMY Fibres from recovered paper are used to make new products – especially packaging products we see every day. In South Africa, around 64% of recoverable paper is collected and recycled. The goal is to reach 70% by 2020. Although this is higher than the global average of 58%, South Africa still faces a number of challenges when it comes to closing the

Big read gaps that exist in the ‘circular economy’. This is defined by WRAP UK as an alternative to the traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which “we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them while in use, and then recover and regenerate products and materials” at their end of life. In layman’s terms, this simply means recycling our ‘waste’. To the companies that PAmsA represents, waste paper is an extremely valuable raw material – which means it isn’t waste at all. According to the south African Department of science and Technology, R8.2 billion worth of resources are recovered and recycled back into the economy (based on 2012 data). This figure would rise to R25.2 billion if all recyclable material going to landfills were to be reclaimed. Jane adds, “Over 150,000 people are employed because we plant trees, make paper products and recover them for recycling.” Imagine the potential for our society and economy if we all recycled? If this practice has so many benefits, why do only 3.3% of urban households recycle household waste? “In some areas it’s just plain difficult to recycle due to the inconvenience factor or lack of municipal collection programmes,” Jane explains. Fortunately the City of Joburg, through Pikitup, is smoothing the way by supplying bags for recyclable materials. Then there’s the irritation of having to dismantle packaging before recycling. We’ve all bought a new toothbrush, but how many of us take the time to pull the plastic away from the paper backing?

ImagIne the potentIal for our socIety and economy If we all recycled?

Form meets Function Every problem has a solution. Every solution has a hurdle. Hurdles lead to innovation. This was the case for Ecologic Brands founder Julie Corbett who wanted to create a bottle comprising less plastic for better recyclability. Along came her new iPhone nestled on a smooth, robustly moulded paper-based tray. Cue in ‘lightbulb moment’. Julie designed a bottle comprising a sturdy outer moulded fibre shell made from cardboard boxes and old newspapers, with a thin inner plastic pouch and re-sealable cap. In 2008 she secured a patent for her technology. Another exciting example of moulded fibre packaging is Carlsberg’s project to develop the world’s first fully biodegradable wood-fibre bottle for beverages. All materials used in the ‘Green Fibre Bottle’, including the cap, will be developed using bio-based materials – primarily sustainably sourced wood-fibres – allowing the bottle to be responsibly degraded.

Just add innovation Fredrik Rosen, Innventia’s market strategy director, adds that sustainable packaging is not enough. “It has to be something that strikes the interest of consumers. If we’re able to go from a traditional paperboard to something with curved surfaces, then the opportunities for packaging innovation are endless.” A few years ago, Innventia and design studio Tomorrow machine were awarded the Dieline sustainable Packaging Award for the sustainable Expanding Bowl, a prototype developed by materials scientists and designers to demonstrate the possibilities of a new bio-based interactive material in food packaging. Before reaching the consumer, the package size is minimised, reducing air in the package and transport costs. Normally, this type of food packaging comprises as much as two-thirds air. Add hot water and the compact package grows, opening up for the contents to be consumed. The cardboard has active properties that respond to heat and moisture. There are countless examples of research into packaging solutions that

are stretchable and can be moulded into exciting shapes with barrier properties and protection against light and impurities – all made from paper. “Think inside the box,” Jane encourages, adding that the industry needs to work with packaging designers and marketing creatives to improve their knowledge of the recycling process and life cycle of packaging. What may stand out on the shelf might not be recycled efficiently in south Africa. Fancy foils, glues and coatings and even the material itself can often make the package non-recyclable, and destined for landfill – remember the linear economy? Packaging will always play an important role in the consumer purchasing decision – from function and product information to aesthetics and recyclability. We need to think in a circular fashion, using a material designed by nature, and designed for recycling.

Nicola loved the name Diesel High for their latest campaign because it has a multitude of meanings and implications. It’s provocative; it pushes you to live life with intensity. It suggests immediacy – being in the moment, enjoying the present and living fully – as well as spontaneity, escaping from the everyday into something bigger, more immersive and more exciting. Today, as the world can feel mired in war, fear and illness, Diesel High is bright and optimistic; it’s a punk or subversive answer to the darkness around us. The Diesel High campaign is especially eye-catching as a contrast to serious premium fashion campaigns; it’s playful and happy. As Nicola says, “There are so many crazy things happening now that you don’t see people just having fun anymore. The challenge was to work with an avant-garde photographer, Nick Knight, and get him to do something he’s rarely done – which is shooting people smiling. PRADA Can a woman exude confidence, yet be relaxed; appear uninhibited and carefree, yet remain in control? These seemingly contradictory states are explored in the new campaign for Prada by Steven Meisel. Gemma Ward, Julia Nobis and Ine Neefs take centre stage. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all portrayed in a different mood: stoic, psychedelic and intimate. A black and white studio shot is strong and defiant. A graffiti pastel backdrop channels movement and a youthful attitude. Then weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re drawn in close, into a seductive bedroom scene. There’s design, and then there’s Italian design. It’s special and appreciated the world over. It represents an abundance of history and culture, a cornucopia of art that’s immediately recognised. It’s about food, love and the way you live your life. Italian design is spirito della vita! Words Sulaiman Philip | Photographs Paul Westgate t’s the regard for small details, the perfection in production. The history of small family-owned design houses and their legacy. It’s amore. Or, as the Italians say, ‘out of the stomach’,” Robert Marengo begins by way of explanation. The owner of Hip Republic, a design and décor store in Greenside, is stumbling over his thoughts as he tries to explain the appeal of Italian design. It’s the buzz, the ‘huzza’, the love of life that arouses a need to create. “An Italian designer starts with a need for something, then creates to match that need. I’m German, I’m the opposite. I need a plan before I begin.” History and a sense of place allow designers influenced by Italy to create objects that tell a story, rather than just stand there and look pretty. The results tend to be something brand new yet classic and molto chic. Italian designers are moving away from the heavy wooden designs of old, Robert says. New young designers’ imaginations are being fired by the Italy they call home and not just the history they can call on. “Designers are working with engineers to create designs for homes that are smaller. A company like Flexform are creating incredibly stylish furniture

for smaller rooms. They’re using wood and metal and suede. Even in the small family-owned design houses that have existed for generations, designers are drawing on everything that went before to reimagine design.” Jewellery designer Lia Abrahamse speaks in slow, hushed tones. She seems to be thinking, designing even as she whispers. “Italian design is three things: It’s creative, free and organic. The outcomes are unexpected.” She spent four months studying at Alchimia, a school of contemporary jewellery in Florence, relearning how to make jewellery. “Contemporary jewellery,” she corrects me. “It’s a very Italian style of jewellery. Every piece is a work of art and it doesn’t have to be wearable.” Already a designer and goldsmith when she left for Florence, she was not allowed to use any gold in her work. “I had to use found objects, sponges, newspaper. The idea is to take your mind to another place where ideas develop and change.” From her experiences in Florence, Lia created a line of jewellery she called Mend. It began with a bangle made from candle wax. “I created a bangle using wire mesh and papier mâché. It changed the longer you wore it, it began to look like bone.”

The essence of design is something stolen. A table will always have a top but when you design a new table, inspiration comes from something else. You have stolen inspiration from other things, other objects. Design is inspired by a piece of wood, by common objects around you. In the end, imagination, the ability to mix together and create something completely new, is design. Franco Forleo is a restauranteur, a photographer and furniture maker. His father was an Italian POW who settled in South Africa after the Second World War. Franco, dressed in a crisp shirt, says the Italian influence in South Africa can be traced to the 100,000 Italians who were housed at Zonderwater Prison. “(Sculptor) Edoardo Villa was one of the prisoners that stayed. There were artists, musicians and woodworkers housed at Zonderwater and some of them stayed. They opened restaurants and workshops; made music; influenced the world around them.” Close your eyes. Imagine Franco making furniture. It’s a step back, away from the rush of digital time into a slower, more precise age. He caresses the wood as if it were a living thing,

A teenage Franco was influenced by the sights and sounds and smells of Italy when he first went to visit. Like an entire generation, he was swayed by the fashion. The sharp-cut suits in ice cream shades and textiles used in women’s fashion. Franco puts on coffee. It’s easy to fall in love again with the traditional charm of his battered Bialetti stovetop pot. It takes practice but it makes a perfect cup of coffee. Pressurised water bubbles up through freshly ground beans. A strong espresso scent fills the air. “My second car was an Alfa 1600 Super. -Max Roller Derby League was the first roller derby league to start in South Africa and was formed by Melinda Lotz and a few of her friends in 2010. It’s home to the Joburg All Stars, Thundering Hellcats, Raging Warmones, Slam Damsels and Zebricorns (the referees). Let’s rewind a little bit. Before I relay to you my time with these amazing athletes and their subsequent subculture, here’s a formal description about what the sport actually entails from the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Flat Track Roller Derby is a fast-paced contact team sport that requires speed, strategy and athleticism. The flat track version of the sport evolved (and now also male) sport played on quad roller skates. The game consists of a series of twoin 2001 and has quickly grown to minute ‘jams’ where players skate around an elliptical track. There are five members from each encompass more than 400 leagues team on the track at one time. They are: The Jammer (the point scorer), three Blockers (defence/ worldwide. In the C-Max Roller Derby League’s first year of establishment, it consisted mainly of girls learning the game and how to skate, while at the same time recruiting as many people as they could. Now, five years later, it’s the biggest league in the country, with their team ZA All Stars recently attending the prestigious Blood & Thunder World Cup in Texas where they competed against international roller derby teams of the highest standard. Girls who start the sport are held together by dedication and commitment to their teams. It’s a sport that bonds people and brings women together from all walks of life, and it was a natural progression from simply a sport to a subculture. It’s the most open sport when it comes to body diversity and there’s a role for everyone on the track. It’s made girls, who would previously never have taken part in sport, into athletes and given them a place to express themselves freely without judgement. This year has seen C-Max face a huge challenge when they lost their venue to development. They’re currently on the hunt for the right place to train in. However, the 2015 Home Season Fight to the Finish has so far been a great success and there are many more games lined up for the rest of the year. They’ll also be holding boot camps with international skaters, as well as growing their teams internally. The Joburg All Stars travel team is heading to the UK in November to compete against top international teams, so training is in full swing. For more pictures, visit

Located just to the east of the Sandton CBD, this once industrial area is now an interior design and fabric mecca. Amatuli is the sparkling jewel in Kramerville’s crown. This treasure trove of a store sources its artefacts and antiques from all over the African continent, China, Indonesia and India. With three floors filled to the brim with curiosities, this is a unique shopping destination, where every item has a story just waiting to be discovered. Trying to pick a favourite item is near impossible, but look out for the selection of African fabrics, intricately beaded chairs, detailed wooden chests covered in Hindu deities, and vintage carved doors. The décor boasts a colonial vibe with a difference – think comfy leather sofas, black-and-white checkered floors, vintage photos, huge windows and a resident cat, Tequila. CRAFT feeds the masses some great grub and ensures fantastic looking design. From the copper-finished pizza oven and bar to the distressed leather aprons, we felt inspired by our favourite local eating joint. They showed us how they do it on the trendy streets of Parkhurst. We decided to have a go at some of the CRAFT favourites that we just can’t get enough of…

Food

Remember, seafood LOVES flavour, herby, to be exact. Along with parsley, add a handful of chopped coriander, chives or tarragon, or even a combination of all.

Creamy mussels

Ingredients 1 tbsp (15ml) butter 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil 1 small leek, halved, thinly sliced (white and pale green parts only) 1.5kg mussels, scrubbed, debearded 1 cup (250ml) dry white wine ½ cup (125ml) fresh cream 4 tbsp (60ml) chopped fresh parsley Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Crusty bread, to serve method 1. Melt the butter with the olive oil in a large base, heavy pot over a medium heat. 2. Add the leek and sauté for 3 minutes. Add the mussels and the wine. 3. Cover and simmer until the mussels have opened (about 4 minutes – discard any that do not open). 4. Add the cream and parsley into the mussels. 5. Simmer uncovered for 3 minutes. Season the mussels and sauce with salt and pepper. 6. Serve with crusty bread.

Use this dough recipe to create quick bread sticks. Simply roll into sticks, place on a greased baking tray and scatter with sea salt, black pepper and fresh rosemary.

DESIGN-YOUROWN-PIZZA PIZZA Ingredients 2 cups (500ml) warm water 1 tbsp (15ml) dried yeast 1 tbsp (15ml) salt 5 cups flour, divided 4 tbsp (60ml) olive oil

Toppings *We were inspired by the Italian pizza at CRAFT* ½ cup (125ml) tomato pizza sauce 150g blue cheese 150g Parma ham 100g fresh asparagus spears 100g Rosa tomatoes, halved Fresh rocket, to serve Method 1. Mix the warm water and yeast in a small bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast proofs. 2. Add 2 ½ cups flour with proofed yeast and mix well in food processor, using a dough hook (can be done by hand). 3. Add the remaining flour and salt and knead it until it’s smooth (about 5-10 minutes roughly). Cover the bowl with cling wrap and let the dough rest for 30 minutes. 4. Pour 2 tbsp (30ml) olive oil onto a baking sheet or pizza pan and evenly coat the bottom. 5. Divide the dough into two pieces. On a clean, floured surface, roll the dough out thinly. 6. Spread some pizza sauce onto the dough base, followed by blue cheese, Parma ham, asparagus and tomatoes. 7. Place in an oven at 220 degrees Celsius and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling. Scatter with fresh rocket just before serving. GOURMET BEEF BURGER Ingredients 500g minced beef 1 large free-range egg Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp (15ml) Dijon mustard 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil Lettuce leaves, to serve 6 fresh burger buns

Method 1. In a large bowl, combine the mince, egg, salt, pepper and mustard. 2. Mix well and divide into 6 portions. Form into burger patties and place them in the refrigerator to firm up for 15 minutes. 3. Preheat a large griddle pan for 4 minutes on a high heat. Turn the heat down to medium. 4. Brush the burger patties with olive oil and place on the griddle. Cook to your liking for 4-5 minutes on each side. 5. Place a few lettuce leaves into each bun, add a burger patty and serve. 6. Optional: Add a slice (or two) of your favourite cheese â&#x20AC;&#x201C; cheddar, blue or Stilton. Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola is one of the most recognisable brands the world over – an icon, some might say. It was 1899 when Coca-Cola was first bottled under contract in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Coca-Cola president Asa Candler sold the bottling rights for $1 and the bottles used at the time were straight-sided Hutchinson bottles with a metal stopper. 1906 Amber-coloured and clear straight-sided bottles with an embossed logo are used by bottlers across the US. 1915 The now famous Coca-Cola contour bottle is patented in 1915 by the Root Glass Company of Terre Haute, Indiana. The creative brief given to Root called for a bottle that could be recognised when it was broken on the ground or by touch in the dark. 1957 Coca-Cola contour bottles are printed with a white label featuring both trademarks, Coca-Cola and Coke. Previously the CocaCola trademark had been blown in glass lettering on the bottle. 1960 12-ounce aluminium Coca-Cola cans are introduced in the US. Early can graphics include an image of the Coca-Cola bottle so customers’ would recognise it as the same beverage they enjoy from a bottle. 1993 The 20-ounce PET contour bottle is introduced. Castle Lager

What would a South African braai be without beer? The one complements the other. And, what could be more South African than Castle Lager? Castle has been an iconic local brand since 1895. When Charles Glass arrived in South Africa in the late 1800s during the Gold Rush, he discovered a slightly different kind of gold: the brewing recipe for a pale gold liquid. In 1884 Charles Glass started the company Glass & Co. Charles struggled to set up the brewery, plagued by shortages of proper building materials at the time. He had the further challenge of sourcing the hops, malt and the other ingredients necessary to brew the beer. The brewery was eventually completed and he started the work of producing a beer that would sell. The beer grew rapidly in popularity. It was named Castle Beer in 1884 and the brewery was named Castle Brewery. In 1895, the South African Breweries was founded, with its registered office being the Castle Brewery. Charles sold his Castle Beer recipe to SAB. Changes started happening with packaging in the 1950s, with Castle Lager becoming South Africa’s first canned lager in 1959. The first brand label to be used

launched in 1965, with the Castle Lager brand changing to red and gold. In 1975, Castle Lager introduced the original dumpy bottle, which has gone on to become a South African classic. In 1993/4 Consol marketing believed that the Dumpy design had outlived its time and the first moves were made to a more elegant, taller design. One of the negatives of this taller design was fairly major feedback from consumers – because the Dumpy was so established, refrigerator manufacturers actually designed fridge shelf space to fit the Dumpy but the taller bottle would not fit the shelf heights in the fridges. There was some success with the taller Ohlsson’s design but this 1975 led to the development of today’s much taller NRB bottle designs. Black Elephant Vintners: Two Dogs, a Peacock & a Horse Not your typical wine producers, Black Elephant Vintners, located on the outskirts of Franschhoek, have introduced fun and an element of quirkiness not only into their wines, but into their label design too. No pomp and ceremony about them, one of their most eye-catching labels is the Two Dogs, a Peacock and a Horse. The name alone should pique your interest. “In essence, there are just too many labels with the Big 5 on them, as well as other overused recognisable South African elements, so we chose three random animals, just wanting to have a bit of fun. Also, Two Dogs, a Peacock and a Horse tells the story of Franschhoek,” says Kevin

First came the Dutch: “If you lay the bottle on its side, neck on the left, you will see that the die-cut shows the Dutch Cape Gable and the cap is orange.” Then came the French Huguenots: “If you stand the bottle upright you will see the inverted Y, which represents the Eiffel Tower.” And lastly they all came to live in South Africa: “Turn the bottle on its side again, with the neck on the right, and you will see that now the Y represents the South African flag.”The labels capture and celebrate the character and personality of each blend, with each wine becoming a performance on its own. www.bevintners.co.za www.joburgstyle.co.za | 67

or more than a century people from all over the world have been drawn to the Robertson Wine Valley to put down roots, cultivate and produce wines. JBay Winterfest 2015

Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape is preparing for another JBay Winterfest, is set to run from 8 to 19 July. Along with the surfing contests there are also a number of other sporting events like the JBay Mountain Bike Open, the Core Sokkie Jol skate event and the Infood Blue Cold Water Swim Classic. The JBay X Trail Run is a unique and extreme event comprising 60 km of trail running in three races over two days, with all races starting exactly 12 hours apart. The JBay Winterfest Live music festival is also set to return, with some great acts lined up. Matthew Mole will be headlining, and other acts include the inimitable Jack Parow, Taxi Violence and PHFAT, among others. OppiKOppi

Get ready for three days of nonstop partying, singing, dancing, fun and a little bit of roughing it. OppiKoppi, from 7 to 9 August, takes place 13km outside of Northam in Limpopo. OppiKoppi is a colloquial abbreviation of the Afrikaans phrase ‘op die koppie’, which literally means ‘on the hill’. The camping area is at the foot of a hill, on top of which is a bar and the Sipho Gumede stage. This stage features hip hop and dance acts, while the main Oppikoppi stage features all of the big acts and most of the rock music. The festival has grown to attract in the region of 15,000 people. EKURHULENI FOR THE DAY 9am: The eastern part of the city has many surprises in store, but first head out to Bedfordview, home of the giant Eastgate Shopping Centre as well as the popular Bruma Fleamarket. Best bet for breakfast is either in Eastgate, at the Village View Shopping Centre or at trendy Bedford Square. Here are our choices: • Europa, Bedford Square – a stunning European deli offering continental pastries and coffee as well as a choice of breakfast options. • Tasha’s, Village View Shopping Centre – now a household name in South Africa, this was the original bistro where coffee and great food is a trademark, as are the stunning freshly baked goods on display. • Mugg & Bean, Eastgate – offers huge hearty meals and great coffee. Their breakfast muffins are legendary, as are their hefty portions. 11am: Once you’ve had your fill of food and great shopping, it’s time to head for a cultural experience in Benoni, where you can enjoy a glimpse into township theatre and dance at the Sibikwa Community in Benoni. You can also spend some time at the OR Tambo Museum, which highlights the area’s cultural diversity as well as important historical events that took place there. 1pm: Enjoy lunch at the lovely little restaurant at Uncle Tim’s Cabin on the outskirts of Benoni, home to a charming collection of Victorian buildings that boast various shops selling arts and crafts, wrought iron and antiques. The restaurant has a pretty, private garden with a fountain and there’s a specialist herb garden nursery on the premises too, which makes it the perfect setting for a bite to eat before doing some shopping. ALSO CONSIDER You could return to Joburg via Kempton Park, to visit the Mandela Freedom Museum, a museum located

at Emperor’s Palace Casino that honours the life and legacy of former South African President, Nelson Mandela. Emperor’s Palace itself is a haven of entertainment, with a choice of restaurants as well as worldclass gaming facilities. You could spend your afternoon here instead of at Uncle Tim’s Cabin. If you’re visiting Emperor’s Palace between 16 July and 9 August, you can enjoy Touch of Class, a glamorous song and dance extravaganza.

West Rand adventuRes 9am: Drive to Muldersdrift en route to Krugersdorp, and visit the Shepherd’s Fold Stables where you can enjoy fun, scenic trail horse rides through rivers, bushveld and bird sanctuaries. Either en route to Muldersdrift or on your way to Krugersdorp after your horse riding experience, you can enjoy a stunning meal at a charming country

jumping 50m, such as such a Bridge Swing, and a 320m slide into the water, all operating from Kings Kloof Bridge. Visitors can also enjoy white water rafting and touch rugby here. Until 27 June David Epstein has been called by some the greatest contemporary South African photographic artist. Black-and-white has been his traditional medium of choice for both film and digital, in recent years a hint of muted colour with occasions of pure digital creation adds a different perspective to an already accomplished body of work spanning over 20 years. “I like to experiment with different combinations of photographic media – the old in the form of silver halide and the new, which is, of course, digital. I experiment with different ink/paper combinations and the result is that no two images are exactly the same. Located on Louis Botha Avenue, this legendary spot is said to be the oldest roadhouse in the city. Its authenticity still stands. Joburg’s oldest pub, The Guildhall, can be found in the Joburg inner city. It opened in 1888 and has weathered the city’s many changes. STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

hen I was 21, I boarded a plane to the UK to study at Sheffield University. I had two suitcases, one full of clothes and another crammed with books and CDs. I carried a large, portable radio/CD player and a travel pouch filled with (among other things) detailed instructions from my mother. I still got lost in the snow before finally arriving at my res, Truro Works – a prison-like, red brick building located behind a steel factory (the grinding would begin at 5am). By the 1970s, many of Sheffield’s factories had closed and unemployment was rife. However, the large university flourished. I’d travelled numerous times to England, where my mom’s family come from and still live. However, I was shocked to discover that Sheffield, which used to be an industrial powerhouse of the North thanks to its steel production, was nothing like London and the Yorkshire folk (“Awright Duck?”), nothing like the savvy Southerners. So, I’d arrived in an intimidating and gloomy city, without knowing a soul. Before this, I’d resided in the same expansive house in suburban Johannesburg my whole life. I’d never really had to try hard to get people to know me or vice versa because I’d had the same friends since nursery school. Suddenly, I’d been thrust into a furnace of anonymity which, while I was burning with excitement, felt like a terrifying abyss. What’s more, I was forced to squash myself and my prodigious possessions into a tiny room with a kitchenette and a shared (gasp!) shower and toilet.

There’s something about being anonymous in a big city that is scary but also delicious, says Sass & The City’s Nikki Temkin The first few weeks were very lonely (conversations with shop owners my only human contact) but as time went on, I realised the delight of being able to be without the judgement or knowledge of anyone who knew me. So, I remade myself somewhat, garnering a slight accent so that people could understand me when I spoke. I gravitated towards those who made an effort with me; insinuated myself into English culture. Some people turned out to be from such different backgrounds that it was fascinating just to be with them. A close friend from Liverpool had a hit-man for a father who was serving time in prison and she was putting herself through uni by selling drugs. Another best mate was a neurotic, talented Scotsman who closely resembled Sting. Together we partied, studied and partied some more. Although I could do and be whatever I wanted – a blessing as well as a curse – I was still judged by complete strangers for being a spoilt, sheltered and fairly naive South African (which I was). Big cities are not often kind to strangers— and I was nowhere close to being a poor refugee. As a privileged white South African, I can only imagine what victims of xenophobia suffer. No, I’m inexplicably lucky to be able to say that living elsewhere was an adventure, a gift to be able to stretch out to explore and discover a new world – and what that means, you discover within yourself. By the time I returned home a year or so later, I was much changed. However, my love for Joburg had only grown. I’m grateful for the experience of living elsewhere, partly because it affirmed that sometimes home is about being where everyone knows your name, and sometimes it’s just about where you choose to make it.
