From the editor You’ll notice when you open this issue of Joburg Style that it’s a little bit different to what you’re used to… okay, make that a lot different. We’ve gone through a revamp to make the magazine more interactive, personal and an all-round better experience for you, loyal reader. We absolutely love our new look, and hope you do too. Pop me a mail to tell me what you think. We have a brand new section, Glimpse, which I’m very excited about. It showcases all the latest and hottest beauty, fashion and lifestyle news. This issue offers a great balance of serious, thought-provoking and then more fun stories. I interviewed our beautiful cover star Terry Pheto, and what a rare gem she is. She talks about staying true to yourself, being proud

of where you come from and remaining humble. Something she said really stuck with me: “When you’re true to yourself then you don’t have to change anything about you.” Sibusiso Bheka provided us with his photo essay showcasing Joburg at night, in all its vulnerable beauty and glory. With help from Kerryn Krige of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), our Big Read dips into the world of social entrepreneurship, what it means, how to become a social entrepreneur and the people making a difference right on our doorstep. Anne Dolinschek goes knee-deep into Joburg’s German culture and Chris Saunders and Daniela Goeller give us an insight into the one-of-a-kind Smarteez subculture. Leila Saffarian and Karl Rogers will have you reaching for the pots and pans, or, make that the braai. Feast your eyes and stomachs on the delicious South African

dishes with a Joburg Style twist, of course. Our travel section has been bumped up and in this issue you can explore Zambia along with Eric Bornman, the Midlands with the whole team and Cape Town and Durban with expert coastal bloggers from each city. Jo Buitendach and Channay Harvey explore all the new foodie hotspots, and some of the old faves, that Linden has to offer. The List (formerly JList) doesn’t disappoint, with great live shows, karaoke spots, art exhibitions, a diary of events and what to do with the kids these upcoming holidays. So, it’s farewell from me for the next two issues. I’ll be leaving to have my baby; there’ll be a few Instagram pics, or 500, so no need to feel left out.

Formulated without artificial fragrances or colours.

GLIMPSE | MALE GROOMING

WHERE+WEAR GO TREND FOUNDER AND EDITOR KEVIN MCLENNAN TELLS US WHAT’S HOT AND HAPPENING WHEN IT COMES TO GUYS’ GROOMING

1 COIFFED

Getting ready for fashion week is one of my favourite times to experiment with new hairstyles, my go-to product right now is Urban Fudge Texture Junk. It lets you style your hair in anyway possible; it’s a super strong hold without the horrible crunch that you can get from other waxes and gels. And for the extra bit of hold, try out the Wella Professional SP Hairspray for a look that won’t fade throughout the day or night.

3 FACE ON

Let’s face it, the pressure is on to keep our skin looking great, but busy schedules and the intimidation of a long routine can really be a bummer for some men. I just stick with the basics. A good face wash like Clarins Men’s Active Facewash used daily in the shower can really make a difference to the appearance and cleanliness of your face. Also, using a great moisturiser like the Kiehls Age Defender Moisturiser For Men is great because it’s an easy two-in-one. It really has changed my skin dramatically in a short amount of time and when you begin to see results in your skin it motivates you to look after it better.

16 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

2

SMOOTH SHAVE

Whether you’re a beard-lover or a clean-cut kind of guy, you’re bound to use a shaver to fine-tune. The Phillips Care Touch Wet & Dry Shaver is super handy as it has a pop-up trimmer so you can keep your facial hair tidy and it has three smooth blades on the top. Finish it off with the Clarins Men Shave Ease Two-in-One Oil that soothes the skin.

4

LINGER LONGER

Some of my favourite men’s fragrances right now come from Azzaro, and their new Wanted fragrance for men has just come out in stores. Another favourite of mine is Armani Code Profumo. The seductive combination of oriental flavours and tonka bean extracts really mix well together in this fragrance. Definitely a must-try.

On Trend

5

The Athleisure trend is still very much in; make sure though that you stick to very simple colours such as black, white and grey. With these colour combinations you’ll look aesthetically pleasing, so it’s very hard to go wrong, you’ll always look stylish and presentable at any given time. Plus, you’ll always feel super comfortable – which is a bonus!

GLIMPSE | DAY TRIPS

STYLE. DESIGN. CULTURE BONTLEFEELA MOGOYE AND KHANYI MLABA HEADED OUT ON TWO VERY DIFFERENT JOBURG DAY TRIPS. FROM THE HOT SPOT OF THE MOMENT, MARBLE TO THE NEWLY LOCATED LION & SAFARI PARK, THE CITY OF GOLD OFFERS A MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES

DAY 1 9AM

It’s Monday morning and all I can think of is my lunch date with Chef David Higgs at Marble in Rosebank. I pick up the new Opel Astra to drive around Joburg for the day, and I hit the road. 10AM

I’m off for a facial at Sorbet in Rosebank Mall, but before I enjoy my treatment, I need my fix, coffee fix that is. Well, in my case it’s a chai latte fix, and there’s no better place for a piping hot chai than Starbucks.

RIDE ALONG Opel has launched the new Opel Astra, and it’s more competitive than ever before. It offers a more fashionable, mature feel with its manual six-speed gear box and the power of the engine gives it that perfect sports car feel. I love how the electronics took care of my driving needs, from parking control, to the buttons on the steering wheel. I’m crazy about fast cars and the Opel Astra brought out the Fast and the Furious in me. It’s chic inside with enough storage space to keep all my nik naks I travel around with on a daily basis. An easy, glamorous drive.

18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

11:30AM

Fresh and ready to tackle the rest of the day I make a quick stop at the CIRCA Gallery at Keyes Art Mile. I love local South African art, we have some amazingly talented local artists and it’s important to support them. My favourite pieces will always be ones of Nelson Mandela, especially portraits. 12PM

I have an interview with Marble’s Chef David Higgs. You just have to try their wines; the beautiful cellar calls you from a distance. Unlike other restaurants where you don’t see how your food is prepared, Marble has an open kitchen that forms part of the restaurant. Each dish is prepared on an open flame, Chef David explains. His favourite dish to prepare? Anything fishy. 12:30PM

Lunch time and I can’t wait. I order fillet with sweet potato and a sweet corn sauce, it’s to die for! If I could lick the plate I would, the fillet is tender and cooked to perfection. And the interior? Wow! The restaurant’s

style reflects South Africa’s beautiful cultural melting pot. Before I leave I have a quick chat to Sommelier, Wikus Human. 2PM

Stomach full and happy I hop back into my Opel Astra and drive to Sandton City for some retail therapy. I head into TopShop to buy a pair of socks, Zara to check out their latest collection and I end up buying an oversized denim jacket, and Sunglass Hut for a pair of Michael Kors shades. A trip to Sandton City wouldn’t be complete without a browse through the Diamond Walk. I’m currently obsessed with Gucci’s Ace Embroidered low top sneakers. 4PM

It’s cocktail time, and one of the best places to sip and watch the sun go down is at The San Deck, Sandton Sun. It’s a sophisticated yet trendy outdoor venue that boasts views of the Sandton skyline. With three large fire pits, lounge seating, live music, and a DJ on weekends, it’s perfect for informal get-togethers and special social occasions, serving light meals throughout the day.

DAY 2 9:30AM

With the golden sun tanning the rooftop of my car and the grey clouds playing hide and seek, only to be found later that night, the day was almost too perfect for the adventure that lay ahead. As buildings and skyscrapers faded into mountaintops, the 45 minute drive to the ‘little Paris’ that waited for me in Hartbeespoort was a tranquil one.

TREAT TIME

10AM

French Toast is the French getaway you don’t have to pay thousands for. Right off the bat I’m greeted by Parisian cobble-stones and delicate greenery, almost as if stepping in to a melange of Paris and the south of France. Tip-toeing on the hot pebbles is a noble peacock, and not too far from him, a raft of ducks is pecking at food being sneakily fed to them by toddlers under a table. Back at the table, breakfast is served. A sticky, syrupy, scrumptious satisfaction is my selection for today. Alexandre’s French Toast is an obvious choice. Not feeling up to French toast? How about indulging in the selection of freshly baked cakes, from red velvet to black forest, the cakes are just the right amount of

sweetness you need to kick-start the day. Before hopping back into the car, a selfie in front of the faux Eiffel Tower at the end of the lovers’ bridge is mandatory. How else will the rest of the world know you had breakfast in France? 11:30AM

Yes, the idea of The Lion Park is a tourist cliché, but have you actually hung out with lion cubs? Have you? Reserve your opinion for when you’ve actually cuddled a baby lion – there’s nothing like it. It’s the therapy you never knew you needed. The animal interaction area is my first stop at the Lion & Safari Park. There I pet and cuddled three irresistible baby lions and got to spend some time lounging in the grass with Cindy, the enigmatic cheetah.

I started off the day French, so why not end it off in the latest French import? PAUL bakery and restaurant has opened in Melrose Arch, and a stop for a macaroon or two is a no-brainer. Of course, I lied to myself when I thought I’d order just one thing off the menu. PAUL restaurant is a classic French-styled space that urges you to sip on une cafe au lait and indulge in... well... everything. Croissants, macaroons, éclairs, tartlettes... you name it. Everything is impeccably decorated and elegantly presented.

12:30PM

Top left Cocktails at The San Deck Left Fillet at Marble restaurant Top right French Toast Above The Lion & Safari Park

For lunch, go to the Bull ‘n Buck restaurant, but go hungry. With generous food portions of a range of different delicacies, you’re bound to walk out with a smile on your face. Before I was done with my snails and garlic bread starter, plates with peri-peri chicken and a mountain-sized burger were placed in front of me. Nothing else to do but to throw the diet and any hopes of looking elegant out the window and dive in face first! 1:30PM

Can’t move after licking the plate clean? Not to worry, just jump into the back of a safari truck and enjoy being driven around to look at lions that are as lazy as you now are. Starting off slow paced by observing lions and lionesses sleeping in the sun, to kicking it up a gear and challenging a pack of wilddogs to a race, the safari tour rounded up a day at the park superbly.

DOUBLE SHOT Up for a night cap, or three? Stop by The Bolton Road Collection in Rosebank for a bite to eat and some cocktails. This trendy kid on the corner offers Parisian-style pavement café seating, a glamorous cocktail bar and restaurant with double volume ceilings.

GLIMPSE | TRAVEL

ACCORDING TO JERRI GLIMPSE CHATS TO CULTURAL CURATOR AND INFLUENCER JERRI MOKGOFE ABOUT HIS TRAVELS IN AND OUTSIDE SOUTH AFRICA

My best travel experience through South Africa, and other African countries, has been by road trip. A drive out to Sun City in the North West with a group of friends and family is always a treat. You’re almost always guaranteed the sun will be shining there. A road trip through the Free State is always a good idea. Drive through Thaba Nchu and its surrounds, recapping on your South African history. The story of King Moshoeshoe and Moroka II, chief of the Boo-Seleka section of the Barolong tribe makes you appreciate our history and marvel at the surroundings. Make your way through Ladybrand, Ficksburg, Clarens and stop at Motoulong. A drive through the Garden Route is therapeutic and stunning. When you do end up in Cape Town, drive up Signal Hill and go for a hike up Lion’s Head. Watching the sun rise or set over Cape Town never gets old.

20 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Namibia is a beautiful, unassuming country, and it will quietly lure you in by its hidden beauties. The capital city, Windhoek, feels like a small South African town. They say “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” This quote came to life when I drove from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay. To my left was the Namib Desert and to my right was the Atlantic Ocean. The country has so much to offer as a destination of choice, think Etosha National Park, camping in Sossusvlei or quad biking. Florence, Italy made me weak at the knees with its serenity and its beauty. There are various ways to enjoy the city and soak up all the energy it has to offer, be it by driving through the lush green country side of Tuscany or sipping on an espresso at Gucci Museo. The Gucci Museo is dedicated to the iconic Italian fashion house, with

“Take a drive through the Thaba Nchu area, recapping on your history.”

archived pieces, press clippings, sketches and handbag exhibits. Head to Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michaelangelo’s David, or enjoy an early morning run up to Piazzale Michelangelo where you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over the city. Mozambique can be a little rough around the edges, however dig a little deeper, explore intuitively and you’ll be rewarded. If you’ve planned a short holiday in Maputo, I suggest taking a stroll down to Costa De Sol beach. Take a 10 minute boat ride to Catembe Island across from Maputo CBD. Dedicate a full day and take an hour-and-a-half drive to Macaneta Island where the water is clearer and more appealing than the river water in Catembe and Maputo city.

IN THE MOOD

KHANYI MLABA CHATS TO ASANDA SIZANI ABOUT HER COLLECTION WITH TOPSHOP, LIFE AS AN EDITOR AND HER ABILITY TO TRANSFORM HER MOOD INTO LIVING ART

“I rely on my mood. I rely on my instincts. I rely on my feelings.”

A

rt is one of the many wonders of existence. Although we witness art in everything we do and in every place we go, we let it pass us by. It’s a rare skill to take the art that nobody sees and make it into something of note. This rare skill is one that fashion editor and stylist Asanda Sizani possesses. What Asanda does is make a presence out of clothing, rather than make a mere outfit, and it’s this attribute that led to her success in the

22 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

fashion industry and most recently her collaboration with TopShop earlier this year. Asanda has become a well-known and highly respected figure in the fashion industry, boasting an exceptional online following and leaving her mark on different magazines and brands she likes to call her many homes. “I’m never chasing fame,” Asanda says, explaining the well-known brands she’s worked with. “I always have a connection with whatever place that has become home for me.” These homes range from Drum magazine to Woolworths. Recently, her

temporary home was international brand, TopShop, making her the first South African to collaborate with the retailer. “I feel as if I’m opening the door for the next young black person who grew up like me,” she says. Her hands-on approach to styling is what led to the success of the collection. She explains it was an opportunity not to be taken lightly. “I had to offer things of high quality, things that speak to my sensibility, things that resonate with different women.” TopShop x Asanda was one of TopShop’s “Edited by” capsule collections, specifically edited by Asanda for this year’s SunMet Gala. “I rely on my mood. I rely on my instincts. I rely on my feelings. There’s a lot of things, especially as creatives, we cannot communicate with words. But you know how you feel and you know your instincts.” Asanda credits her mood for her creativity, and explains even as an introverted child, when she had nothing to say, she would see it in pictures and storyboards. Asanda’s future continues to brighten. She still has plans to travel the globe, hopefully start her own collection, and most importantly keep the door open for the black youth planning to follow in her direction.

T

he cliché ‘more than just a pretty face’ is very apt when it comes to Terry Pheto. Her exterior beauty, although breathtaking, has nothing on her soul. Warm, kind, humble, strong, open and funny, we chatted for hours like old friends. During our conversation, she received a phone call informing her she’d been nominated for another award for the movie A United Kingdom. In the true story of Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana, Terry stars as the Prince’s sister, Naledi Khama. “It’s validating. It’s a great feeling,” Terry says. “We’ve had this frustration about international actors playing big African roles, so it is a step in the right direction when local talent is recognised. You do as much as you can and when you get recognised for that, it’s always a good thing.” The actress and producer has come a long way since Tsotsi 12 years ago. In the six-part miniseries Madiba, currently showing in the USA and soon to air here, Terry plays her dream role: Winnie Mandela, alongside Laurence Fishburne

To play someone who you’ve grown up looking up to is the greatest honour of them all.” There was no way of preparing Terry, or any of the Tsotsi cast and crew, for the accolades they received back in 2005 when the film was released. “When your first movie wins an Oscar, that becomes your new normal. I’ve always wanted longevity in this industry and I don’t ever feel I went through a phase where there was no recognition. I’m grateful that all these years later I can still have something new to celebrate.” She says she believes she is where she is for a reason. “I used to joke, ‘If Hollywood wants me, they’ll come and get me,’ and it’s crazy how that has happened. I had an agent from Paradigm fly from LA to woo me and I signed with them last year.” “I take every experience, good or bad, and I go back into my shell and I try to be better. I have a reason why I’m doing what I’m doing, and as long as I remember that and stay true to myself, then I won’t be shaken.” It’s always been a dream of Terry’s to eventually go behind the scenes and produce, and in 2015 her first movie, Ayanda, was released. The movie tells the story of a 21-year-old from Yeoville determined to revive her deceased father’s motor shop by refurbishing old furniture. It’s a coming-of-age story. “I said to myself, when I celebrate 10 years in the industry, I need to say, ‘In 10 years, this is what I did.’ I’m a great believer in timing. When it’s your turn, nothing will ever stop you from achieving what’s intended for you.” As a first-time producer, Terry wasn’t prepared for the success of Ayanda. “For me, it was like, okay I have a small, little film, I’ll tell a few people about it. When it’s well received and winning awards locally and internationally, you know you can

TERRY ON BEING A ROLE MODEL never ask for more. It’s been a beautiful journey. A beautiful rollercoaster.” Where to from here? “For me, it’s all about storytelling. I would never want to limit myself. As a matter of fact, I’d like to even explore more as an actor, and as a producer and director. Maybe one day I’ll write a film. As long as I’m living my truth and my calling, it doesn’t matter what platform it is.” And her next dream role? “I’d like to explore different genres. I’ve done mostly drama, so perhaps comedy next time? I don’t know, maybe I’ll play a superhero one day. The sky’s the limit, I think. I’m just going to give it to the universe.” These days Terry spends two or three months at a time in LA. “I’m fortunate in that I’ve always had friends there. It’s so important in Hollywood because it’s a lonely place. I’ve always been surrounded by love, real love, not a hashtag kind of love and support structure.” Black women in the entertainment industry are still facing a constant struggle. “People have this idea of what a black woman should be. Maybe it’s because we’re magic. A black woman will often be told you can’t do ‘that.’ It’s frustrating. In my world, I like to think it doesn’t exist. I see people as people. My identity and my roots are more than just the colour of my skin. I believe if you understand who you are and where you’re from, then you’re a more solid individual in the world.” At the time of the interview, Terry’s father had recently passed away, which led her to talk about her fears. “I used to fear losing the people I love. But the older I get, I’ve realised I’ll lose people I love, one way or another. Right now, my fear is to not live the life I’m meant to live by trying to please other people. My fear is not reaching my full potential. My fear is not being where I’m meant to be because perhaps I was distracted, or too busy trying to make other people happy. As much as I give myself to everyone who I love, how much of me is left? I have to live my truth.” As our lunch date comes to a close and Terry stirs her cappuccino, we move on to chat about pride and her achievements. “I’m most proud of the woman I’ve grown up to be. There is no better feeling in the world than being able to silence that little voice that says, ‘You’re not good enough,’ with success. It’s like a slam dunk. Shut that voice down with success and you win.” Above all, Terry is grateful. “I think if you live your life with a grateful attitude, no moment will be wasted.”

I take it very seriously because growing up I didn’t have many role models. Sometimes the only access to role models you have, or the people you feel are the closest to you, are the ones you see on TV. I believe it’s important to be honest and tell your story as truthfully as you can. I’m still doing the same thing 12 years later and telling my same story to a different audience every day; that’s why I still tell it. As unpretty as it may be, I’ll tell you where I come from and how I grew up. And as tiring as it may be, it will inspire someone else. I hope the role I’m playing in living my life truthfully is received in the right way, and is inspiring. I’m tired of young people only having reality TV as a reference. I’m about telling people that this is as tough as it was. So, when a kid of 20 is listening to me speak or reading something I’ve said, there’s nothing wrong with not having fancy shoes and a fancy car. We put so much pressure on young people. When I was 20, I had nothing. I didn’t even have airtime. For some reason, people now feel like that at 20 you should be slaying.

THE BIGGER PICTURE THE DICTIONARY DEFINITION IS SIMPLE: SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP – ACHIEVING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC GROWTH. HOWEVER, IT’S MUCH MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM GIBS’ KERRYN KRIGE AND THREE JOBURG LOCALS MAKING AN IMPACT ON SOCIETY, WE FIND OUT WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR

K

erryn Krige, the senior programme manager at Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), says the best way to understand social entrepreneurship is to look at the choices we have for organisations in South Africa that can either register as notfor-profit organisations or for-profit organisations. Forprofit organisations exist to generate commercial and economic value, and our not-for-profits drive social change. But South Africa’s needs are too complex to rely on these opposite sides to lead our social and economic development: Our inequality, unemployment, youth bubble, education and health systems are all social issues that have enormous impact on our economic growth. What social entrepreneurship does is open up the space in the middle, encouraging us to combine the best of business (its focus on profit and sustainability) with the best that civil society brings (its focus on values and social change) – these are social enterprises, organisations that simultaneously have a focus on social and economic value generation. The equal focus on social value is important here as it is not incidental or a by-product of doing business – so social entrepreneurship is not corporate social investment, or the job creation that happens as a natural consequence of good entrepreneurship.

TSA LAPENG YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Based in Stinkwater, north of Tshwane, Tsa Lapeng Youth Jazz Orchestra (TLYJO) was founded in

September 2012 with help from the legendary jazz saxophonist McCoy Mrubata as a flagship ensemble of the Tsa Lapeng Music Initiative (TLMi). It has financial assistance from the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC). The TLYJO is led by talented flautist, singer, composer and music educationist, C’nky Siwela and aims to provide an opportunity for talented young musicians from the remote corners of big cities and rural communities to get together, learn new skills and grow together as established artists who appreciate the art of South African jazz and kwela music and reintroduce the love of these art forms to as wide an audience as possible. Under C’nky’s leadership, the TLYJO presents its annual Tsa Lapeng Youth Jazz Orchestra Festival in Hammanskraal and also conducts a series of educational concerts in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga each year. TLYJO featured 25 talented young students and teaching artists aged between 12 and 25 years from Tsa Lapeng Music Conservatoire - Stinkwater. Showcasing endless talents, improvisational skills and exuberance, the ensemble participants demonstrate these traits in every performance and play with a collective maturity well beyond their years with a repertoire that makes no concession to their youth and featuring soloists of startling ambition and creativity. These young artists bring South African music to life and pay tribute to the true giants of South African jazz, making their compositions, and playing with enthusiasm, style, personality and expression. The TLYJO promotes the future of young performers and cultivates the dynamic, adventurous spirit that has kept audiences coming back for more. TLYJO is dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for its beneficiaries and less fortunate artists by seeking resources needed to create business opportunities. The purpose of social enterprise within TLYJO is the development and marketing of its annual festival and its educational concerts as well as selling sponsorship opportunities, tickets, merchandising (branded snacks, popcorn, stickers, posters, apparels), artists bookings, concert coordination as well as the exploration of new endeavors not only consistent with the TLYJO mission and vision, but also to enhance its revenues, therefore reducing dependence on traditional www.joburgstyle.co.za | 29

SPARK SCHOOLS

GIBS alumni Stacey Brewer and Ryan Harrison stepped up to a challenge delivered by Professor Adrian Saville to address South Africa’s poor education system. SPARK Schools charges the same as a government school – they earn an income – and they cleverly use technology and their building spaces to ensure every asset is fully utilised. But what really makes them different is their enormous investment in teacher training, which sets them apart and has earned them a reputation for high quality, innovative education. Parents choose to send their children to SPARK and hold it accountable to deliver affordability and exceptional quality. Some background on SPARK… The founders believe that the children of South Africa deserve an education that best serves their needs without any compromise. SPARK Schools aims to provide a model that is affordable to the country and produces internationally competitive scholars. The state of South African education is stark, with South Africa consistently ranked among the worst performing education systems in the world. While pursuing an MBA at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, SPARK Schools co-founders Stacey and Ryan decided that, instead of waiting for others to create the change in education, it was up to them to do so. Ryan and Stacey wanted to create schools where they would be proud and confident enough to send their own children. Although Ryan and Stacey did not have experience in the education sector, they believed their fresh approach to education combined with their business acumen would offer a sustainable, high quality solution to the education crisis in South Africa. SPARK Schools was born, with a mission to provide access to high quality education for all South Africans through the accessibility of affordable education. SPARK Schools is a network of primary schools dedicated to delivering accessible, high quality education. SPARK Ferndale, the first school in the SPARK Schools network, opened in 2013 and achieved tremendous academic results in its first year of operation. Following on this success, the SPARK team opened SPARK Cresta in 2014, SPARK Maboneng and SPARK Bramley in 2015, and SPARK Midrand, SPARK Lynedoch 30 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

(Stellenbosch), SPARK Rynfield and SPARK Centurion in 2016. In January 2017 the network grew to 11 schools, with SPARK Randpark Ridge, SPARK Silver Lakes and SPARK Carlswald. Their vision at SPARK Schools is to open new schools each year throughout South Africa. www.sparkschools.co.za

Sharanjeet Shan has been working for over 20 years to improve mathematics education for African school children and was recently recognised by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. As executive director of Maths Centre, Sharanjeet has constantly innovated the way she and her team teach mathematics, so children in different schools and with access to very different resources can best learn and love maths. “Maths is important because it’s a skill for life. Everything you do is connected to mathematics. It’s the discipline of nature. Understanding maths makes you a better person in terms of how you solve problems. You cannot get away from it,” says Sharanjeet. Maths Centre believes teachers are key to solving the educational crisis. As such, it develops programmes to enhance their qualifications, competencies and professionalism in mathematics, science and technology subjects while systematically monitoring learners’ progression. Maths Centre also provides skills development programmes for in-school and out-of-school youth, and high quality and effective teaching and learning materials. KERRYN’S TIPS TO BECOMING A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR See the world around you Social entrepreneurs stay connected to their environment, but instead of seeing a list of negatives, they see opportunities they can work towards to improve their society. Claire Reed couldn’t figure out why it was so difficult to grow vegetables until she started to do it herself and realised the enormous challenges in literacy, fertilising plants, watering them and then protecting them from birds. Don’t be afraid of profit One of the big differences between a social enterprise and a charity is that a social enterprise earns an income – they have figured out how not to be reliant on grants and charitable donations to survive financially. There is magic in the word ‘profit’ as it ensures the organisation can reinvest in itself and it builds equality. If your service is not good enough, people won’t be prepared to pay for it. This ensures there’s a constant relationship between the social entrepreneur and their beneficiary (who is now a customer).

Think differently And be tenacious. Social entrepreneurship is about doing things differently, and constantly assessing whether you’re achieving your social and economic goals. Passionate about our African heritage and movement, Greg has built a world-renowned dance company that has a trophy cabinet overflowing with international and local awards. THERE’S MANY A FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPH OF JOBURG TAKEN IN THE DAY; HOWEVER, IS THE CITY DEFINED BY NATURAL LIGHT AND DAYTIME ENTERPRISE? WHAT ABOUT ITS OTHER MOODS AND CHARACTER TRAITS, THE ONES THAT EMERGE AT NIGHT? WHAT, TO BE PRECISE, ABOUT JOBURG AFTER DARK? Photography Sibusiso Bheka Words Sean O’Toole

P

hotographed in late twilight and early night, Sibusiso Bheka’s essay ‘At night, they walk with me’ sets out to answer these questions, albeit on this young photographer’s own terms. “I was watching TV and saw some amazing nights shots,” says Sibusiso on his project’s origin. “They showed the beautiful lights of Joburg at night. I had an idea that I’d like to do something like that, but I wanted to do it in a township style.” Much like during the day, Joburg after dark is a place of labour and minimum wage. But Joburg after dark is also a time of diversionary pleasures, when the sobriety of a city characterised by discipline and work, also exploitation and alienation, yields to other things. For many, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, it’s also a time of pleasure, of drinking and dancing. But the night is a far richer subject than even this. The dark and its many associative qualities make it a time of myth and intrigue. It’s this imprecise territory, the night as a place of projection and unseen otherness, that is the subject of Sibusiso’s essay. “I used to be one of those kids who enjoyed playing outside at night more than during the day,” says Sibusiso, who was born in Kathlehong in 1997 and lives with his mother and grandmother in Phola Park. Evening is a sociable time in the townships as workers return from work and the silence that pervades these labour compounds by day abates. It wasn’t that he only played at night. Growing up, he would regularly explore Thokoza on foot. “I would go to the places where my parents told me I wasn’t supposed to go,” he says. To fulfil a simple childhood impulse: to see what was being prohibited. During these wanderings, he would scavenge for pieces of metal to sell to a scrap metal dealer. “I used the money to play video games.” These early mappings of Thokoza later played an invaluable role in his photography project. “I got to know where the dangerous places are, where to avoid, especially at night. If an area doesn’t have electricity, it isn’t safe.” The relationship between light and safety in Sibusiso’s photographs is worth pausing on. “It is safer to take photographs where there is light,” he says, but in the same breath admits, “I avoided places where there are a lot of people because you get robbed.” Light is only a possible beacon of safety in his photographs, not a

guarantee of it. The light sources in his essay vary: from the last filigree of daylight on the horizon to various forms of electrical sources. Sibusiso’s subject is mythical, not infrastructural. He recalls being reprimanded and told not to play at night. “I was told if you play at night, you are playing with ghosts,” he says. In part, his essay is a playful exploration of “the idea of ghosts, whether they exist or not”. A ghost story is a good way to keep a child off the streets, out of harm’s way. “To be honest, growing up as a child was tough,”

concedes Sibusiso. “You witness a lot of things happening in Thokoza.” His photographs only describe a defined period of dark, an early dark. None of his photographs were made late at night. “That is a dangerous hour,” he says. “At that late time, there is too much alcohol drinking. I have never thought of photographing at that time.” Despite the optimistic claim his subjects make to public spaces at night, his photographs are defined by a prescribed working method. “I usually work alone because people know me here, but if I have to go on

the outside section of Phola Park where I live, then I get people from school to join me.” While his essay invites sociological readings directed at the meaning of electricity, crime and the changing role of public space in South Africa’s slowly transforming townships, he is not a documentarian in the manner of Brassaï in 1930s Paris, or Weegee in New York of the same period. His is a playful and autobiographical project. Many of Sibusiso’s photographs include him as a protagonist. “The reason why some of the pictures are staged is so that you don’t get that actual feeling of real events,” he says. Understood in this sense, the strange offcolours, long shadows, constant blurring and ghostly auras that surround his human subjects are integral to the meaning of his photographs, not mere by-products of shooting at night. They are expressive attributes, not simply examples of photography’s ongoing struggle to record events in low light. “When I show people who live in my

36 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

neighbourhood my pictures, they don’t believe it is actually Thokoza,” he says. This constitutes praise for Sibusiso, who likens his photographic method in his essay ‘At night, they walk with me’ to storytelling. “It is like a novel about an old lost town,” he says. A forgotten place that has been found and reimagined by an alert young mind.

“I am trying to describe my neighbourhood in a way I see and experience it. I am kind of creating my own scenario of what you would see in Thokoza – its atmosphere. I want you, when you look at the pictures, to experience the atmosphere.”

GRĂœSSE AUS JOBURG Greetings from Joburg: The German community is about loving life, the outdoors and having lots of fun, as Anne Dolinschek recently found out

I

’ll admit I didn’t know much about the Joburg German community when I started doing research on this article. The first thing that came to mind was the German school’s (The Deutsche Internationale Schule) Oktoberfest, which I’m sure most of us have attended at some point or another. I mean, dressing up in lederhosen and singing along to traditional songs is as fun as it gets. I was then introduced to Helmut Kanwischer, chairman of the German Country Club in Paulshof, who made me aware of an entire German subculture that exists in our City of Gold. He joked that he initially moved to South Africa at the age of 20 to get away from his girlfriend and soon fell in love with the weather and the easy way of living. He waxed lyrical about living in Joburg and I soon realised his views were shared by most of the German expats here. Joburg, and South Africa as a whole, is the perfect place for Germans because they tend to love nature and the outdoors in general. “It’s too cold most of the time to explore and enjoy nature properly at home, but our [South African] weather ensures that we can constantly be out and about,” says Helmut. The openness and friendliness of Joburgers also came up time and time again when speaking to expats. I personally think it’s our warm and sunny weather that comes through in our personalities. The German community gravitates towards settling in Joburg’s northern suburbs and I can only guess it is because it is central to the rest of the city and near to the The Deutsche Internationale Schule too. They have a love for life and get together as often as possible to catch up over a good, cold beer and traditional delicacies. And there are so many great dishes to choose from. The most popular and well-known are bratwurst, eisbein and, of course, sauerkraut, but there are a couple of others we should all try too. Believe it or not, there’s a popular meal that is fully vegetarian! I did not expect that. Spätzle is a bit like pasta and is traditionally served as a side dish to meat dishes, although it can be served on its own. The serving suggestion is to top it with lots of cheese. They had me at “lots of cheese”… where can I order mine? Another dish that sounds too good to pass on is Bratkartoffeln. Me being me, I tried to translate it off the top of my head and I somehow

GERMAN FANS The German community loves sport and the outdoors almost as much as sharing good food and drinks. A sporty, outdoors and slightly competitive event to look forward to at the German Country Club is their annual 3-LandeSpiele. It’s a fun event where the German Club takes on the Swiss and Austrian Clubs. Events include darts, tug of war, tennis using a frying pan, a quiz and much more. In addition to having a fun day in the sun, participants and onlookers can also look forward to delicacies from the three countries.

got to ‘brat potatoes’, which sounds great to me. I’ll eat most things containing potatoes, bratty or not. The dish comprises thinly sliced, boiled potatoes fried in a pan with a substantial amount of oil, bacon and onion until it’s dark and crispy. Doesn’t that sound delicious? Sign me up for German meal nights. If you’d like to experience more German and, more specifically, Bavarian culture, there are many Oktoberfest events held around Joburg on an annual basis where you can share German food and beer with friends and family. Once there, you can look forward to entertainment in the form of Bavarian brass bands, local girls trained by German mädchen (girls) on how to serve guests and let’s not forget the traditional outfits - a feast for the eyes. The best Oktoberfests to look out for are the ones hosted at the The Deutsche Internationale Schule, Monte Casino and smaller scale ones at the German Country Club. Whichever way you look at it, spending time with Germans is never dull or a waste of time. You are guaranteed good food, hearty conversation and probably an ice cold beer or two. Make sure to befriend the next German you encounter.

EXPATS If you are German and have just moved to Joburg, Internations.org is a great website to meet others in the area. The organisation also hosts a variety of social events throughout the year especially for the German community. They provide advice for living in the city and have forums if members want to discuss a certain topic.

“F

ashion is in the sky, in the street,” said Coco Chanel in another century, “fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening…”. The vision of the iconic French designer corresponds better to the spirit of The Smarteez than her iconic brand, considered mainly as a status symbol in our capitalist and neocolonialist world. The Smarteez’s style has been researched for its significance to South Africa and its consistency with postmodern consumer theories, as well as for its hybridity and the strategies of remixing and sampling employed, considered significant in the postcolonial context. On the backdrop of the revival of craftsmanship

and dandyism, The Smarteez set out to examine the role of fashion in South African society and the expectations and rules that define it. The Smarteez are a fashion collective from Soweto, formed by fashion designers Sibu Sithole (FDB), Floyd Manotana (Floyd Avenue), Kepi Mngomezulu (Kepi) and Lethabo Tsatsinyane (Liter). The four designers used to organise fortnightly style sessions on Sundays, and quickly gathered an important group of fans and followers. Like any other subculture in the world, they created their own recognisable style: a credo for its followers;

iconoclast and provocative to the mainstream, but fresh, new, exciting and full of inspiration. Fashion traditionally plays an important role as an identity marker in South African popular culture, especially in the black community. In a country where the majority of the population was deprived of basic human rights, clothing allowed individuals to protect and differentiate themselves and maintain their dignity. Dress was used as a form of resistance and contestation. In the 1940s and ‘50s, the multiracial Joburg suburb of Sophiatown, with its jazz musicians, writers and notorious gangsters, was strongly influenced by American culture and fashion. People dressed in expensive and hard-to-get imported clothes, and labels were everything. This tradition lived on well beyond the forced removals and even apartheid – in the form of a conservative dress code that comes with nostalgia for the past and a relentless competition of labels. The importance of the labels is a

constant in all South African youth cultures; in the townships, labels are used to impress and to assert social status and gender. The Smarteez played with this heritage. With a postmodern, postcolonialist attitude, they remixed and revisited their classics – in the form of thrifted original garments, materials and classic cuts. They amended and prepped them up, and combined them with contemporary items tailored by themselves. The Smarteez created a very open-minded and playful fashion, based on the original combination of old and new, masculine and feminine, high and low fashion, casual and chic, expensive swagger and DIY, modern and traditional, patterns and colours – a local, handmade and personalised fashion as self-expression that stood against the conformity of the global consumer market. It always carried the mark of the temporary and improvised, and was only true in the moment. The Smarteez fashion was all visual and movement and performance-based and became a symbol of post-apartheid identities – or the quest thereof. The Smarteez fashion was reflective of a certain optimism that came with the lived experience of the newly obtained freedom of movement and expression. It’s this mixture of global belonging and local context that is said to characterise the South African Millennials or Generation Y. Although The Smarteez achieved public attention in 2009, a reality TV show was based on their lives, they appeared in Dazed and Confused magazine in 2010, presented a collection at the South African Fashion www.joburgstyle.co.za | 47

week in 2011, a more relaxed version of their fashion was to be commercialised for big retail and they even won an award as Joburg’s best subculture, the hype created around them ultimately never materialised in a sustainable business development. They struggled with the exploitation of their ideas by the mainstream, because they felt largely left out of the material side of their success. The fame became an obstacle in itself, as the hype around the brand at least partly destroyed its uniqueness and the dictate of the group worked against personal freedom and individual creativity. It also led to an identification of the individuals with certain looks, especially as certain images out of the two iconic portrait series, shot by the photographer Chris Saunders in 2008 and 2011, went viral. The conformity they wanted to combat caught up with them as their anticonformist style became the image of the new South Africa. The Smarteez have catalysed South African subcultures and street fashion in a very unique and innovative way. They made thrifting desirable before it became mainstream, inspired and influenced numerous young (and old) designers and contributed to creating the image of South Africa as a country of cultural variety, creativity and inspiration. But they were only one group among many, emerging in a strong creative field determined by fashion, performance and music.

“In a country where the majority of the population was deprived of basic human rights, clothing allowed one to protect and differentiate oneself and maintain one’s dignity.”

there’s a DIFFERENT KIND OF magic in ZAMBIA

From sunsets to cruising on the Zambezi River, Eric Bornman discovered the true spirit of Africa in Zambia on an epic adventure

O

ne minute I was soaring like an eagle over the breathtaking Victoria Falls in a helicopter, the next I was enjoying a dip in Devil’s Pool overlooking those roaring waters. I also journeyed on a 1930s steam train and enjoyed a luxury Colonial lifestyle at one of Africa’s most historic hotels. The people of Zambia are gentle, with spirits as strong as the mighty Vic Falls; they speak 72 official languages, but still manage to communicate their warmth and friendliness without uttering a single word. Wherever you go, the surroundings are spectacular and filled with natural beauty, making a getaway here an unforgettable experience. If you love adventure, there’s never a dull moment, whether you’re enjoying a helicopter flip, going on a safari cruise to see wildlife in its natural habitat, swimming in the waters above the falls at Devil’s Pool or enjoying trail biking, bungee jumping or white water rafting. There’s also plenty of time to relax; on a booze cruise at sunset or while enjoying superb, Colonial-style cuisine at the sumptuous Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara. This iconic hotel, which is arguably the most opulent hotel in the area, was our base for three nights. It’s an historic place named after the legendary explorer, David Livingstone, who was the first 56 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

European to discover the mighty Victoria Falls, and boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site location on the banks of the Zambezi River overlooking the spectacular falls. Offering every possible luxury facility, the hotel features 173 opulent, air-conditioned guest rooms located in two-storey clusters, each with a private balcony or terrace. While staying there, we enjoyed fine dining, a selection of adventurous outdoor activities and warm, personalised service. With ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ (Victoria Falls) just a 10-minute walk away, the hotel is an ideal base from which to explore – especially as it offers guests a complimentary private entrance to the falls. The hotel is also a great place to relax, with its deep verandahs, generous spaces and cool courtyard retreats. We enjoyed a number of fine dining experiences at the Royal Livingstone Restaurant, which overlooks the river and offers both international cuisine and fusion-style African dishes. A highlight of the trip was enjoying drinks at the Travellers Bar, which became a regular spot to sit and mull over each day’s adventures. Another really pleasant surprise was watching giraffes and zebra roaming the grounds. This is Africa at its most exquisite and untamed.

ACTIVITIES

We enjoyed a number of unforgettable experiences, including a 15-minute helicopter flip over the falls and a luxury steam train journey on the olde worlde Royal Livingstone Express, which included being wined and dined beside the falls. Travelling on this charming Victorian train through scenic passes is reminiscent of rail journeys of yesteryear. We travelled through untamed bush on a nostalgic journey, enjoying

every luxury and comfort in the five Pullman-style coaches that have been meticulously restored. The train is made up of two dining cars, a kitchen car, lounge car and observation car from which we watched the sunset. For me, the highlight of the trip was an excursion to Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool right next to it. Located right on the edge of the falls, it offers breathtaking views. We left the Royal Livingstone by boat from its private deck and first enjoyed a guided tour of Livingstone Island, with beautiful views beyond the falls. Then we swam to Devil’s Pool, a short swim from the island, and sat right on the edge of the falls. We also enjoyed a delicious picnic afterwards before heading back to the hotel. Time stands still at Victoria Falls, which is why it’s so important to return there as often as you can.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS

Midlands | Explore

The magical KwaZulu-Natal Midlands offers hundreds of hidden treasures for those who come to explore this scenic, charming part of the world. Joburg Style’s team meandered their way through the area’s quirky nooks and crannies

A

side from being a diverse ecological paradise with scenic beauty as far as the eye can see, the area was once a best-kept secret, nestling between waterfalls, misty mountains and pockets of rare indigenous forest and known only to those who had passed through en route to the coast or made it their home. Stretching from Mooi River in the north to Hilton down south and reaching outwards from the N3 highway in both directions, the Midlands offers numerous hidden treasures. These are discovered along what is called the Midlands Meander, a selection of the area’s most beautiful locations, as well as places where unique arts and crafts are created, all with their own special story to tell. The Midlands’ numerous fascinating cultural traditions are evident in the handiwork crafted by artisans in the area, from blacksmithing and exquisite quilting to fine woodwork, delicate embroidery, homemade jams and preserves. In many instances, time-honoured techniques are used in innovative ways to adapt items for use in the modern world. Artists and craftsmen have opened their workshops and studios to visitors, who can watch skilled hands moulding clay

into fine porcelain pots on a potter’s wheel or deft fingers spinning mohair into breathtaking carpets. This lush farmland area is called ‘the land of milk and honey,’ and understandably so. Here, rural life takes centre stage; the main source of income is those products that are created from the toil of those who work with the land. Farm-fresh products like cheeses, honey, vegetables and fruits and the sense of community here are what give the Midlands its very special charm. The people who live in this special place are dedicated to protecting their unique environment, a small area that has a relatively large selection of plants and animals. As a result, nature-lovers discover a wonderland in the Midlands. You’ll also discover a touch of history here, as within the area you’ll find the Capture Site, the place where Nelson Mandela was captured and arrested on 5 August 1962. Home to quaint, comfortable places to stay, including Brahman Hills, where Joburg Style had the pleasure of spending a weekend, the Midlands is a delightful place to explore. Here we list some of the hidden treasures we uncovered on our journey… www.joburgstyle.co.za | 59

Whether you like cheddar, brie, gouda or gruyere, there is no way you won’t find something delicious at Cheese Gourmet. Consisting of both a café and a cheese store, this is the perfect spot to grab a cheesy snack, or a few tasty treats to enjoy later. The highlight of Cheese Gourmet is definitely the huge array of cheeses, preserves and accompaniments there are for you to peruse and taste. But be warned, you won’t leave without an overflowing basket of cheesy indulgences. If midcentury modern is your thing, then a browse at Re-Trend is essential. The antique furniture on display will make you feel like you’ve stepped into an episode of Mad Men. Think wood, beautiful lines, striking colours and quirky design. And, if

you feel your purchase needs a modern update, it offers a reupholstering service, too. In its over 100-year history, Arthur Bales has been a firm favourite with generations of crafty Joburg residents. Known countrywide for its beautiful material, wool, patterns and quilting fabric, a visit will have you itching to pick up some needlepoint skills. Farm Table specialises in organic produce fresh from the farm, straight to your table. But it doesn’t just stop there; you’ll also find gourmet Greek yoghurt, hormone-free meat, free-range eggs, gluten-free bread and toxin-free home cleaners. Formally known as Ceramic Factory, Rialheim specialises in South African-made ceramics, inspired by local surroundings, heritage and international trends. I love the animal skull wall hangings (made from clay, of course), robot figurines and the uber stylish Gatsby face container.

MIAMI VICE Also known as Brian Lara’s ‘good vibe’ drink, served to the tables that are having a good time. It’s made up of half Pina Colada and half Strawberry Daquiri.

Cape Town Style

EXPLORE | CAPE TOWN

This prime eatery has lit up the city centre, Shortmarket Street to be exact, with its eclectic atmosphere, which comes as no surprise, with the creators being part of the team behind The House of Machines and Outrage of Modesty. Born from a passion for quality ingredients and no mess, no fuss service, the atmosphere for this trendy hotspot encourages large groups to gather for delicious drinks and yummy food. Favourites include the Currywurst, a pork-filled sausage served on a bed of fries, topped with the secret signature sauce. Another is the option of three sausages, with a choice between a cheese griller, bockwurst, knackwurst, chorizo and bratwurst – pork sausage with some extra flavour. There are also vegan and vegetarian options.

POD

www.pod.co.za This glamorous, 15-bedroom boutique hotel in Camps Bay is barefoot luxury at its finest, with butlers ready to whisk your chaise, towels and chilled water down to the beach at a moment’s notice. There are sea views from the pool, deck and laid-back lounge and bar, where cocktails are served. The suites are sanctuaries of calm, with raised, wooden, podlike structures containing the bed and cleverly designed LED lighting to soften the sleek, sharp lines. You’ll love the attention to detail, including architect Greg Scott’s eco-friendly features (sustainable water supply, energy-saving lighting and insulation).

THE SILO

www.theroyalportfolio.com Built in an historic grain silo complex above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), The Silo is set to be part of a new ‘symbol of Africa’ in Cape Town. The ultramodern, industrial-style hotel has 28 rooms, each with whimsical interiors and dramatic waterfront views. Each room has been individually designed and decorated by the stylish wand of Liz Biden. The hotel, part of The Royal Portfolio Hotel Collection, has a restaurant overlooking Table Mountain, a spa and a rooftop pool.

MORO GELATO

LA PARADA DEL MAR www.laparada.co.za

www.hokeypoke.co.za

This upmarket gelato hotspot in Long Street offers a taste of authentic Italian gelato. With 100 percent natural ingredients, no preservatives, colourants or added fats, Moro Gelato offers a guiltfree experience of flavours that will blow your mind. Think the traditional Cioccolato (chocolate) gelato, which is made according to co-owner Stefano Moro’s grandmother’s recipe.

La Parada del Mar occupies prime position on Camps Bay’s strip. The barmen behind the mosaicclad Bombay Sapphire bar whip together their signature Gin & Tonic Del De Barra. Executive chef, Martin Senekal, has pushed the level of cooking into a new league. Flavours are bold yet perfectly balanced, but the focus will always remain on interpreting and reinventing traditional Spanish flavours.

The food at this fabulous new eatery in Cape Town’s CBD is straight-up, simple, fresh and delicious. Poké is traditionally Hawaiian fare–fishermen would cut up and marinate their catch of the day to keep it fresh for longer. The original Poké is typically Hawaiian– raw tuna, shredded kombu, sweet onions and toasted macadamias with a zesty, soy-based furikake seasoning and a bit of a kick.

EXPLORE | DURBAN

48 hours IN THE 031 APHIWE KHAMBULE EXPLORES SOME OF DURBAN’S GEMS AS WELL AS SOME FUN AND AFFORDABLE ACTIVITIES TO ENJOY WHEN YOU NEED TO LIVE A LITTLE

6AM – 11:30AM Start off the morning the right way by visiting the popular and festive Shongweni Farmer’s and Craft Market located in the greeneries of Shongweni. Grab a yummy, freshproduce breakfast while sitting on a hay bale listening to some nostalgic music. Unlike other markets, the Shongweni market doesn’t cause much damage to the pocket. Everything at the market is freshly made or home-made. It is also the ideal place to pick up some everyday grocery items such as eggs, bread, vegetables and milk.

Day 1

1PM – 3:30PM Since we’re near the highway, be sure to stop by my personal favourite lunch spot, Bellevue Café. My regular order at the very modern and artsy café 74 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

includes a delicious, fruity smoothie and a main course of Thai chicken and prawn curry with rice. While it is a wonderful place to lunch, it also has some exquisite gift shops and local design stores, so be sure to spend some of the afternoon browsing around these corners of Bellevue in Kloof. 4PM – 6:30PM If you’re someone who finds joy in taking adventurous hiking trips then the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is just for you. For people like myself, who aren’t regular hikers, the nature reserve is still enjoyable, and there is no entrance fee. The Blue Trail, also known as the ‘Longshadows Trail’, is my favourite. It is a simple route and one that gives

you a reward at the end, the remarkable and glorious view of Molweni River. 7:30PM – 11PM It is always great to end off the day with a beer or cocktail and a delicious, perfectly cooked mouth-watering burger. If you agree then you’re going to love Stokers Arms pub and restaurant. The burgers are so appetising, but then again, so is everything on the Stokers menu. Food is served until 10pm, afterwards, the night is still young and it’s all about getting your groove on.

“Wake up for morning high tea at the chic Oyster Box Hotel.”

8:30AM – 10AM The Oyster Box offers high tea specials on Sundays and a buffet breakfast over the weekend. The buffet has so much to offer, such as traditional English breakfasts, continental breakfasts, a stewed fruit, pancake and waffle station, and from the kitchen you can order a local South African Jungle Oats breakfast with a drizzle of honey. Oh, and the buffet also includes some bubbly or, if you’re feeling extra fancy, treat yourself to a glass of mimosa instead.

Day 2

11:30AM – 1PM Sundays are usually slow and easy in Durban, but the opposite can be said about the KZNSA art gallery. This contemporary and creative space has refreshing, out-of-the-box artwork from experimental artists as well as art collections from renowned South African artists. If you’re someone who is looking for a creative juice boost then this is the place for you. Entrance is free, but having some loose change so you can grab a quick snack at the café is always a good idea.

ALSO CONSIDER A TRIBUTE TO THE EAGLES Featuring the greatest hits of world-renowned band The Eagles on 8 April at the Playhouse Opera Theatre.

2:30PM - 3:30PM Go bike-riding on the popular promenade along the Durban beachfront. The Golden Mile is a picture-perfect place to get that flawless Instagram shot while cruising on your bicycle and basking in the sun. You can hire a bike at the many cycling shops close by from R150 per hour. 4PM – 6PM Spend the rest of the afternoon at the famous Eyadini Lounge. If you aren’t the party scene kind of person, like myself, and you’re looking for a more chilled and relaxing experience, then Sundays at Eyadini are perfect. Enjoy a late lunch ‘chisanyama’ while bopping along to some Afro-jazz musical numbers. Sundays have never been more rejuvenating than this.

KEVIN FRASER – LIFE ON THE HEDGE Comedian Kevin Fraser is pushing society over the hedge in a hilarious blend of modern world problems, delivered with multiple South African spices. On stage at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 30 March to 1 April. SHAKTI BEATS MUSICAL This vibrant and versatile indo-fusion musical show band will set the stage ablaze with their dynamic, explosive and unique array of music at Izulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino on 13 May. GREAT MOSCOW CIRCUS Watch the amazing Great Moscow Circus at The Mighty Big Top, Suncoast, on until 22 March. OLD AFRICAN FAVES… WE DIVE INTO LOCAL CULTURE, CELEBRATE IT, EMBRACE IT AND QUITE LITERALLY, FEAST OVER IT ALL Recipes & Styling Leila Saffarian | Photography Karl Rogers

South Africans love their traditional ‘go-to’ recipes (nothing wrong with that), however, the team decided the beloved braai could do with a little update. A few tweaks, new interpretations and new cooking methods on the grid prove just how versatile our national pasttime of braaing really is.

82 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Tip

Roast vine tomatoes over the coals as the base for the Prego sauce, it will give the most magical smokey flavour to the final product.

CREAMY PREGO BASTING SAUCE Nothing quite beats a bit of basting heat on some good quality meat (or vegetables or chicken or fish). A braai doesn’t simply have to involve the cooking of the meat.

Ingredients 500g tomatoes on the vine 3 tbsp (45ml) olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-4 garlic cloves (in their skins) 1 tsp (5ml) sugar 1 tbsp (15ml) harissa paste ½ cup (125ml) fresh cream 1 tsp (5ml) fresh thyme

Method 1. Place the tomatoes in a roasting pan and drizzle with olive oil. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, and add the garlic. Cover with foil and place on the braai grid over medium coals for about 10 minutes. Remove the foil and roast for a further 5 minutes until the

tomatoes have softened and are slightly charred. 2. Place the tomatoes with all their juice into a blender. Remove the garlic from their skins and add. 3. Place the remaining ingredients into the blender, adjust seasoning and blitz to form the Prego sauce. 4. Store the sauce in sterilised glass jars in the refrigerator. Use as a basting for chicken, meat, vegetables or fish.

CHARRED CREAMY CHICKEN LIVERS Chicken livers are such a favourite and a great way to feed a crowd. Need a great starter for your guests while lazing around the fire? These chicken livers prove that the braai can be used for pan cooking, too.

84 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Ingredients 3 tbsp (45ml) olive oil 1 large onion, diced 600g fresh free-range chicken livers Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ cup (125ml) of the Ultimate Prego Sauce (previous page) ½ cup (125ml) fresh cream 2 tbsp (30ml) tomato paste

Method 1. Over medium coals, heat a cast iron pan and add the olive oil. Add the onions and fry for 3-4 minutes or until well browned. 2. On a separate section of the grid, place the chicken livers that have been lightly drizzled with

oil. Sear on each side for 2-3 minutes or until slightly charred. 3. Remove the livers from the grid and place into the pan, followed by the Prego sauce, fresh cream and tomato paste. Adjust seasoning. 4. Cook over medium coals for a further 6 minutes or until the livers are cooked and the sauce is slightly thickened.

I WANNA TAKE YOU TO A GIN BAR SOUTH AFRICA HAS EMBRACED THE WORLDWIDE CRAFT GIN TREND WITH OPEN ARMS, MORE THAN A DOZEN ARTISAN DISTILLERIES OPENED IN THE PAST YEAR ALONE, GIVING THE SPIRIT A LOCAL SPIN WITH FYNBOS, BUCHU AND SPEKBOOM. SO, LET’S TAKE THE G&T UP A NOTCH, SHALL WE?

“Gin originated in London in the 17th century where it took on a life of its own as a drink.”

A

According to The Botanist Gin brand ambassador and former head bartender and shareholder at well-known Mother’s Ruin Gin Bar in Cape Town, Caitlin Hill, gin has been on the rise for some time now for various reasons. “Both men and women drink gin; it doesn’t require an age statement, like whisky, rum or tequila. It’s a lot quicker to make; it can be made anywhere in the world, making it accessible to quite literally everyone. The reason we’re seeing such an interest in South Africa at the moment is because we have one of the largest plant kingdoms in the world. We have so many flavours you can’t find anywhere else. This makes us unique.” Gin originated in London in the 17th century where it took on a life of its own as a drink, cheaper than beer, and able to drown sorrows and help those living in misery forget their woes. It soon became known as ‘Mother’s Ruin’ as not even a ‘mother’s instinct could survive the ravages of gin’. To curb frenzy, the government introduced license fees on gin retailers and gin taxes (later met with riots). In the 1800s, gin’s reputation took a turn for the

better, as ‘gin palaces’ sprung up over London making the most of gas lighting and offering sophistication over the dingy drinking holes of old. Fast forward many many years later, to 2015, where gin is now enjoying a revival after lurking in the shadows of its cousin, vodka, for far too long. Caitlin adds, “More people are becoming aware of gin and more people are liking it. It’s not just the drink you grew up watching your parents and grandparents drink. There are loads more varieties of gin available with lots of tantalising flavours. Consumers are playing around a lot with different garnishes, and even different tonic brands and flavours, which have become more available to us – making it that much more exciting.” What’s the best way to drink gin? Caitlin says there’s no right or wrong way, however highly recommends having a double gin, with your favourite fruit and botanical flavours, muddled lightly together in a big glass. “Fill the glass with ice and then top up with 200ml tonic water. Your ratio of gin to tonic water can greatly affect the flavour. I work with a ratio of one part gin, to four parts tonic water.”

FREEDOM HAIR BARBERING & COFFEE 082 339 2087

SORBET MAN

www.sorbetman.co.za

Clean shaven

The Melville cool kids flock in their droves to Boyden at Freedom Hair, an old school, barber type set-up. This quirky spot does two things damn well: hair and coffee. The idea is that you get a trendy cut, style or colour, while enjoying a kick-ass cup of coffee. And for the guys looking to cultivate a sizeable beard, this should be your first port of call for advice, whisker centric products and a trim. Boyden says, “I do outrageous cuts from the classic pompadour to the cleanest bobs, colours range from electric blue to brilliant blonds – up styles and easily manageable personalised looks just for you.”

At Sorbet Salon’s big brother, Sorbet MAN, they barber, shave, wax, tweeze, thread, massage, cleanse and condition while you shoot the breeze with a complimentary Scotch on the rocks. Considered to be among the best barbers in the country, they’re a team of professionals who are there for the regular guy: the quintessential South African dude who can suit up, glove up, dad up and man up to invest in his swagger in a gentlemen’s bar that doubles up as a new age man cave. It’s a pitstop for the man on the move (with Wi-Fi to boot) and a welcome hideout for the guy who just needs some downtime. And a foot rub. Apart from a full house of on-trend treatments – from beard grooming to manscaping – Sorbet MAN not only has it all in one bar, but raises it by stocking international brands like Dermalogica, Blue Beards, Redken and KST – as well as Sorbet MAN’s signature skincare and body range.

The word barber comes from the Latin word ‘barba’, meaning beard. Back in the day, beards signified wisdom, strength, and manhood

BAR BER BLACK SHEEP 011 037 3660

Bar Ber Black Sheep, located at Park Corner in Rosebank, is the brainchild of Rory Sandilands, owner of Blo salon in Parkwood and Maboneng. He wanted to create a space people felt was an authentic barber shop, but where they could also have a whisky and cigar preor post-shave and style. A space where patrons would just pop in after a long day for a whisky, beer, glass of wine or coffee, which would ultimately become a favourite local watering hole; a grooming shop suggestive of a man cave. Patrons have a choice of bespoke grooming services, from a quick shave or trim to an executive experience (think three hot towels, hot foam shave with all the bells and whistles), as well as all other unisex hairstyling services.

CREW MEN’S GROOMING www.crewmens.co.za

Located in Rivonia and catering exclusively for men, the environment at Crew Men’s is upmarket and stylish. Gents can enjoy a complimentary beer, whiskey or just relax with a coffee while having their hair cut and styled. The traditional shave with oils, hot and cold towels performed with a cut-throat razor is one of the most popular treatments. The service is exceptional, the conversation always interesting and you will walk away with a fine, precision haircut… perfection!

With a starting price of R70 for close shaves to intricate designs and fades that are “in a naat” (precise), Legends has attracted quite a following. The business is thriving and employs young barbers working from the three venues with a mobile service to boot. Celebrities like Reason, LootLove, J’Something and Riky Rick are just some of the people who trust Sheldon with their hair.

AGAIN AGAIN, BRETT MURRAY 2 March – 2 April

EVERARD READ & CIRCA

WYE, MIKHAEL SUBOTZKY 2 March – 1 April

GOODMAN GALLERY

www.goodman-gallery.com WYE marks a bold and vulnerable new direction in Mikhael’s work. The centrepiece, from which the exhibition takes its name, is a threechannel film installation that turns the lens ‘inwards’ to map the tumultuous terrain of the ‘white male psyche’. Viewed alongside works from the Smashed series and never before exhibited Sticky Tape Transfers, this demanding exhibition grapples with uncomfortable questions of white guilt in relation to heated politics on representation of the body in contemporary South Africa.

Galleries

www.everard-read.co.za l www.circaonjellicoe.co.za

Brett utilises the full breadth of both gallery spaces and expands upon the 2015 Cape Town exhibition of the same name. This includes the new monumental Again Again bronze sculpture installed in the CIRCA main space. The Everard Read galleries include the full selection of Again Again examples first seen in 2015 alongside freshly conceived artworks from the last two years: bronze sculptures, paintings, wall -based panels and video. The artist returns with many of his archetypal, satirical ‘languages.’ The inclusion of several wall-mounted artworks, mostly involving text, serves directly to reinforce the theme of repetition. Though Brett’s work is unequivocally rooted in his domestic experience in South Africa DARK DAYS (2017) says much about the pervasive prevailing global political climate: the swing towards populism, narrow introspection and xenophobic reactionary politics around the world. We are entertained, we are impressed but ultimately we are all forced to look at and acknowledge what is really going on for the artist, as he challenges the upheaval in the world around us.

THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN

UNFINISHED CITY

THE ISLAND, SIMON GUSH

JAG

MOAD

www.moadjhb.com

STEVENSON, JOHANNESBURG

Using works from the JAG collection exclusively by artists of colour, the exhibition explores various forms of identity and issues of feminism, queerness, revolution and culture in black identity. The exhibition is an opportunity for the public to see some works from the collection on display for the first time, such as Charles Nkosi’s iconic Black Crucifixion series and some of the gallery’s exciting new acquisitions, such as Portia Zvavahera and Blessing Ngobeni.

Joburg was meant to be a mining town, dug up and left behind. Yet, on the 130th birthday of the city, its planning and constant state of flux holds that same mining attitude of ‘do what works’. Unfinished City explores how we think about Joburg and features an anti-disciplinary look at the city. The show features neighbourhood developments by different architects, an exploration of the city by artists Naadira Patel, Kevin Krapf, Tanya Gershorn, Atang Tshikare and site-specific works that will be taken to the streets.

Following the thread of Workplace (2015) and Work (2013), this exhibition is focused on labour. Moving away from perceptions of work and the role that professions play in shaping identity, The Island investigates the sometimes fraught, consistently complex relationship between South Africa and Lesotho. Simon observes the displacement and dependency that characterise the movement of people and resources between the two countries. He frames this exercise as ‘thinking about a space that is thinking about someplace else’. The artist also opens up different ways of looking at the balance of power between the two nations. The Island is also the title of the central photographic essay in the exhibition, an exploration of worksites in Lesotho: workwear factories, diamond mines, government offices and the Katse and Mohale dams. Through the interplay of images and text, one is invited to reimagine ways of seeing the country beyond perceptions of dependence and migration, as a generative space.

The Collective consisted of Emilia Potenza, Marlene Powell, Charlotte Schaer, Judy Seidman and Maurice Smithers. The display features 39 posters originally featured in Images of Defiance and now archived in SAHA’s extensive struggle poster collection, along with photographs of poster protests, political banners and t-shirts from the struggle against apartheid, as well as visual resistance materials reflecting contemporary activism in South Africa today.

developing a local brand that can match or surpass the best of the international beauty brands.

10 minutes WITH JANET RHYS

Since its inception in 1999, Charlotte Rhys has remained at the top of South Africa’s luxury market, on a par, and if not surpassing, many of its international counterparts. We chat to co-founder Janet Rhys about her vision, bestsellers and keeping ahead of the ‘green’ game. Partners Janet Rhys and Shaun McDermott’s intention was to create a range that would set

new benchmarks of quality and luxury in the South African marketplace. Formulated and crafted from the finest natural ingredients and available in a wide variety of fragrances, the brand epitomises quality, elegance and style. As a consumer, I have always had a keen interest in top quality beauty products, which is why, as a manufacturer, we set the bar very, very high when

Janet was born in Wales, grew up in South Africa and lived in Europe for many years, with homes in London and Marbella, Spain. On her return to South Africa she found there was no local equivalent to the top international luxury brands of lifestyle, bath and body products. She saw the gap in the market for a local range of luxury products that would set new standards of excellence, and in Shaun McDermott she found the perfect business partner with the expertise and experience to translate her vision into reality.

Since its inception, the brand has been synonymous with all that is covetable and desirable in luxury and style. All our unique formulations are developed at our laboratory and factory in Cape Town to the highest international quality standards using botanical, natural and organic ingredients, many of which are unique to Africa. We keep abreast of all the international trends and we introduce new products a couple of times a year. We are also constantly researching greener and more sustainable ingredients and formulations for our products. Our Hand and Body Lotion is a constant bestseller, as are our room fragrances and candles. All our products are available in a range of 18 unique Charlotte Rhys fragrances to cater for every taste, every age, every season. www.charlotterhys.com
