From the editor We were delighted when we received an email requesting us, as ‘experts’, to describe what is trending in Joburg. We certainly pride ourselves on having our fingers on the pulse of what is happening in this vibrant city, and so we obliged, using colourful prose and plenty of adjectives. The American magazine that had requested this information wrote back, confused. They wanted oneliners to describe trends that are typically Westernised. Please could they have something comparable to living in London, New York, Paris, Dublin or Stockholm, they asked. Publisher Eric Bornman came to the rescue with a succinct response. “There is an entire cultural and political context that one would ignore if you tried to capture this in a oneliner,” he explained. And that is the crux of the matter. Joburg is unlike any other city in the world. We are a microcosm of so many cultures, lifestyles and traditions. Whilst we are at heart South African, like

Cape Town and Durban and all our smaller siblings, we are essentially one of a kind. Our history, our politics, our geography and our personality is entirely different from anywhere else. And this, essentially, is our charm. The seam that runs through the patchwork of our lives, the way we exist, work, create and spend our leisure time, is very specific to where and how we live in this urban jungle. It encapsulates who we are as individuals and as a group that comes together. We are not Western; we’re intrinsically African. We’re an amalgamation, too, a people of so many different hues, languages, cultures and characteristics, who stop strangers in the street to chat with them as if we’ve known them forever, who are rowdy, raucous, artistic, sensitive, hardy, hungry and essentially genuine. Our inner city is unlike any other in the world. For years it stood cold and empty, remnants of a catastrophic past. Slowly being reborn and rejuvenated, it represents the personality of our mixed-up, crazy city. So much creativity. So much art. So much

NICK BOULTON tradition. Although we are unashamedly conspicuous in our consumption, we have embraced Western culture and made it our own. When a man borrows a Hasselblad and captures the essence of a political prison in a series of 23 emotive photographs, that’s art (see Photo Essay, page 34). When three square blocks of a forgotten suburb hold an entire community from Africa, including 10 churches, that’s culture (see Kulcha, page 40). When a set of identical twins makes music that resonates within the city’s bloodstream, that’s worthy of a cover story (see page 24). When a city area is home to a spacious park as well as a 21st century mixed-use precinct, that’s Joburg in a nutshell (see Cool District, page 64). And when a blogger captures the essence of the city in Glimpse (page 13), that’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Which is, essentially, Joburg. This is Joburg. It’s bigger and better in every sense, including arts and culture. A city that dances to the beat of its own drum. Open these pages and hear the music.

RAGING – ANTI-AGING

I turned 24 this year and I already feel halfway to 50. I finally realised that ‘aging’ exists, something I never thought would happen to me. In winter, your skin can get dry and look fatigued. To combat this, you’ll need a great exfoliant and a moisturiser that suits your skin type. QMS Dermabrasive Gel and Liquide Proteins are my top picks.

CLOSE SHAVE

I am obsessed with Crabtree & Evelyn. For guys who make an affair out of shaving, I suggest the Moroccan Myrrh Shave Cream. Myrrh has medicinal and mystical qualities. It smells great and offers a comfortable shave.

SNEAKING ABOUT

Nobody loves his birthday more than I do. Whenever anyone asks me what I want , the answer is invariably “sneakers”. Dress them up, dress them down, go for a walk around town… these are my latest obsessions. Anyone? Please? Check out the new Clarks Trigenics and Adidas Stan Smith with the perfect touch of gold.

5 STAPLE SCENT

From the second I smelt Chanel’s Allure Sport, I was hooked. It’s sophisticated yet youthful, zesty and delicious! Perfect for day or night and my staple scent.

#STAYLOUD

#STAYLOUD with the Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones. The sound is crisp. Another great product is the Barricade portable speaker. I love both.

SALTY DOG

My favourite hairstyling product, Evo’s Salty Dog literally makes me laugh every morning when I spray it on my quiff of wet hair. It gives just the right amount of texture and hold.

WINTER PLAYLIST

Ameen Harron’s new single, ‘Cold Summer’, is such a jam! Ameen is a good friend of mine and an amazing producer. He’s been instrumental in helping me speak my truth and putting that into music. Shout out to The Cartel! Cara Frew’s new track with SNBRN and BLU J is at the top of my playlist now and will definitely keep you warm on these colder nights. It’s as hot as she is!

HALO HAIR LOUNGE

The one thing I’ve always been OCD about is my hair. When I moved to Jozi, like Kuzco, it took me a full year to find my spot. Halo Hair Lounge is the coolest looking spot to hang out in, with the best head massages and hairstylist in Jozi (ask for Donna!).

GLIMPSE | DAY TRIPS

SIP THE CITY WHETHER YOU’RE A COFFEE ADDICT OR A COCKTAIL CONNOISSEUR, ANNA-BELLE DURRANT TAKES YOU ON A COFFEE SHOP AND BAR ROUTE THROUGH JOBURG THAT’S CERTAIN TO SERVE EVERY VICE!

COFFEE ROUTES Okay, let me start off by saying that I don’t drink coffee. I can appreciate it and I know what’s good and what’s not, but caffeine and I are just not friends. So, when I do indulge, you’d better believe it’s a good one. After scouring the streets of Joburg, here are some of my favourite coffee shops. WOLVES

Anyone remember the heyday of Wolves, when every Thursday night saw a new band spilling on to the streets, and it was the only place in town that served a decent red velvet cake? Well, those days are back. After a much-needed refurb and now under new management, you can spend hours here playing board games, sipping fresh hot coffee and munching away on the new Chomp Cronut. FATHER COFFEE, ROSEBANK

You may know the name ‘Father’ from its first store in Braamfontein, but this relatively new

branch is a welcome addition to the Rosebank coffee scene. I love the décor here and the constant smell of coffee brewing and being ground in-store. There’s reliable Wi-Fi here, so take your laptop and settle in. THE WHIPPET

A long-time favourite of mine. The salmon breakfast bagel is so good that I dream of giving everything else up and just sitting there all day eating one after another! Most of the products are locally sourced, so enjoy its own brand of coffee and baked goods. YIELD COFFEE BAR

I love Yield Coffee because it has no airs and graces. It’s a coffee shop through and through, with only a few tables and a few pastries on sale. It focuses on what it’s good at, and that’s making coffee! DOUBLESHOT COFFEE & TEA

One of Joburg’s diehard coffee stores, it takes its coffee seriously. The guys also brew their own tea, which they take just as seriously! Doubleshot also has a great selection of tarts and coffeemaking paraphernalia! PABLO EGGS-GO-BAR

Pablo is one of my go-to breakfast spots in Joburg; seriously, the hummus and flatbread with salmon should be put on everyone’s brunch! Pablo, of course, has to have some of the best coffee in Melville… otherwise it wouldn’t be on my list. 18 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

TEA ANYONE? www.yswara.com If coffee isn’t your first choice, try Yswara Tea Room. It is tucked away in a beautiful courtyard in Maboneng and prides itself on its excellent African variations.

BAR ROUTES

DIRECTORY

There’s nothing better than blowing off a little, or a lot, of steam at the end of a long week. When I’m not spending my days hiking outdoors, chances are you’ll find me sipping a delicious cocktail or nursing a cold beer at one of my favourite watering holes. Each has something that sets it apart from the next, but they all guarantee a good time!

SIN+TAX

Sin+Tax happens to be just up the road from my apartment, but that’s not the only reason I keep going back. This bar is a speakeasy, which creates a sense of mystery around it; it can even be a challenge to find the entrance. The cocktails might be pricey, but I don’t mind paying for the ambience and quality craftsmanship. Expect great service and enjoy feeling like you’re in on one of Joburg’s secrets.

HELL’S KITCHEN

Hell’s Kitchen has an affinity for neon signs and for transforming into a whole different type of animal come night-time. Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest and you’ll be hard pressed to find a seat, let alone a place to stand without being bumped into, but the rest of the week offers a more relaxed vibe. Expect to spot loads of pirate inspired tattoos and beards, with the cinnamon scent of Hellfire in the air! JO’ANNA MELT BAR

Clockwise from top left Father Coffee, Hell’s Kitchen, Sin+Tax, Jo’Anna Melt Bar, Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar and Wolves.

Any place that serves toasted sandwiches on the level that Jo’Anna’s does deserves a medal. It pretty much serves all the yumminess you can imagine on toasted bread. Pair your chosen sandwich with your pick of an impressive selection of local craft beers and you’re set. Stick around long enough and you’ll see tables being moved around as the restaurant transforms into a dance floor. The music is played from a jukebox so you decide what to dance to.

EIGHT SIX PUBLIC

Eighty Six Public started in Braamfontein and was known for its gourmet pizzas and top-notch cocktails. Since moving to Illovo, it’s safe to say that it’s even better than before! My favourite thing about 86 is the deck, which is perfect for whirling away sunny afternoons. Once you’ve had your fair share of cocktails, it’d be a sin not to try one of the pizzas. MESH CLUB

The bar at Mesh Club is a new discovery for me and it’s fast becoming one of my favourite places to watch the sun set over Joburg. The front of the bar is made from glass, which means an uninterrupted view of Joburg that is guaranteed to make you fall in love with this city all over again. The only thing better than the selection of gin is the service. If you’re a little confused about exactly where Mesh Club is, you have to go inside the Keyes Art Mile building and then up the main staircase – you’ll find it at the top. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 19

GLIPMSE | INTERVIEW

NO ORDINARY CONVERSATION ANNA-BELLE DURRANT CHATS TO HUSBAND CRAIG DURRANT ABOUT LIFE ON THE ROAD WITH HIS BAND, DESMOND & THE TUTUS, AS WELL AS WHAT IT’S BEEN LIKE STRIKING UP A SIDE SOLO CAREER WITH YO GRAPES

Firstly, what is it like being forced to sit down and answer questions for me (your wife)? It’s like any other interview except I have a pretty face to look at. I get to see people asking you the same questions over and over again in interviews, what’s one thing you don’t want me to ask you? Where did the name come from? I think I’ve been asked that at least 500 times; each time a little part of my soul dies.

Okay, so you’ve got Desmond & the Tutus and Yo Grapes. Tell me a little bit about each band and what makes the music different? Firstly, Desmond is indie rock; we’ve adopted a bit of a ‘pop’ influence recently. It started out with us wanting to make thundering indie rock music; we wanted to be known as an indie rock band, but now we’re just making music that sounds good to us, we’re not boxing it in at the moment. What makes Yo

“I would like to get into a space where I have more people on stage with me” Grapes different for me is that I have to do everything on my own, the music, the lyrics, all of it. It’s fun, but it’s hard trying to do every part well all the time. I have my weak points, but I enjoy the music so it doesn’t really matter much to me. Musically, it’s different because there are quite a few electronic elements in it.

What does it feel like to have a successful band and then have to start all over again with your solo project? Yo Grapes has always been a passion project, Desmond has become a job – it’s what I do every day. I work on Yo Grapes when I can and when I feel like it. It’s cool to see how people respond to the different types of music I create; I love it when people are fans of both bands for different reasons. You’re used to being on stage with your friends/band mates. What’s it like standing up there alone? I would like to get into a space where I have more people on stage with me. It’s cool having a solo act, but it’s not as fun hanging around between shows. Having your buddies with you is always better! So, what or who would you add to the Yo Grapes line-up? My first step is going to be finding some backing singers. I don’t want them

www.joburgstyle.co.za | 21

GLIPMSE | INTERVIEW

“I usually just get in my Ford and drive myself to every show” five balls in a row into the water, then you know where to find me. It seems that it’s a bit of a theme in your life to have side projects and passions. How important would you say they are? I think musically it’s important, especially if you’re part of a band. Generally, you make decisions as a group, but it is great to create something that’s completely your own. It’s the same for people who aren’t musicians; having and following

to sound like anyone else, auditions start now! How do you feel people perceive your life? What’s something that everyone gets wrong? The other day I had someone ask if I took a helicopter from my house to the show; that’s not what happens at all! I usually just get in my Ford and drive myself to every show; it’s not as glamorous as everyone thinks. I get to hear you make music on a daily basis, but I’ve never asked you about your creative process, what is it... if you even have one? I try to figure out what

22 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

kind of song I want to make before I start. I have references and decide on a tempo that helps me decide on what type of feeling I want to get from a song. I start strumming on my guitar and build the song in Ableton. I also just write the words as I go along. It doesn’t happen in blocks, but rather just all at once. What are some of your other passions besides music? Golf, I love golf so much. What golf course will people find you at? I play at Killarney Country Club mostly, I’m a member there. If you want to see someone hitting

a passion that is completely your own is pretty liberating. When did you first start learning the drums? Do you play other instruments? I started playing the drums when I was 15. I can also play the guitar and dabble a little on a few other instruments. Where’s your favourite place to perform in Joburg? Joburg is a little lacking when it comes to top quality venues. There are a few such as Rumours and Good Luck Bar that I enjoy, but I wish people would support live music venues more so there would be more of them. Over the years, it’s been great to play at places like Town Hall and The Woods. Do you have any exciting projects in the pipeline? I’m busy releasing a new Yo Grapes single and there will be a video out really soon. We’re also starting to write a new Desmond album. I’m super excited about the next few months!

HERE’S HOW TO DIVIDE YOUR GARDEN INTO FOUR DIFFERENT ZONES TO SAVE WATER The easiest way to make your garden water-wise is to group all your plants with similar water requirements together. Some plants need much more water than others, so it makes sense to group the thirstiest in an area where they can get regular hydration and those that need little water in a group. Divide your garden into four separate zones – one for plants needing lots of water (3 drop), another for those that have medium water requirements (2 drop), a third with low water needs (3 drop), and the final group that needs no watering at all (1 drop).

3 DROP ZONE

2 DROP ZONE

HIGH WATER USE Keep the area as small as possible. Plants will need frequent weekly watering yearround. Plant 3-drop plants like annuals and spring-flowering bulbs (eg begonias and impatiens) in containers.

MEDIUM WATER USE Make this area small as these plants will need more water than just rainfall. Many popular exotic plants fit into the 2-drop category, including Nandina domestica and Phormium tenax.

1 DROP ZONE LOW WATER USE This area can be as large as you wish. The 1-drop plants thrive mainly on summer rainfall and may only need a little extra water in the dry months. Suitable plants include indigenous varieties.

For further information on Water Wise, please contact us on 0860 10 1060 or visit www.randwater.co.za and click on the Water Wise logo

NO DROP ZONE NO WATER ZONE Make this area as large as you like. Plants in this zone are often indigenous as well as shrubs and succulents. You can also include permeable paving and hard landscaping in this zone.

ANDREW

Real world or online?

Real world every time. I spend so much time online as social media is a huge part of what I do, so when I get the chance to go offline, I take full advantage of it.

Exciting, progressive, diverse.

SA entertainment industry in three words.

Growing up fast.

Trey Parker, Diplo and Wizkid.

Three celebrities (local/ international) you’d invite over for dinner.

Elon Musk, Drake and Dr. Dre.

Proudest moment in your career so far?

There have been so many proud moments. I would say starting CB (Contra Banned record label) has been the biggest highlight, because I built it from the ground up, and seeing it grow and expand is a huge feeling of accomplishment.

Who do you look up to?

Elon Musk. I’ve always wanted to be involved in the tech side of the world, and I think what Elon Musk is doing is absolutely incredible.

Kenya.

Favourite travel destination?

I love to explore. So I would say anywhere with amazing history. I really want to see the ancient Mayan ruins, and I haven’t had the chance yet, but that’s where I want to go the most.

I love to scuba dive and I’m not a huge fan of heights.

Winter fashion.

Dinner, drinks and then back to the homestead.

I want to, and will be remembered for innovative creations and ideas.

A road trip I took with my Dad up through Africa; it was a hell of an experience. We camped out in the most desolate of places, got stuck in the middle of the bush surrounded by lions and hyenas, and just enjoyed the journey.

You can expect new music and events from our company, ContraBanned.

BRIAN Summer or winter fashion?

I prefer summer as a season, but I’m a huge fan of winter fashion.

Ideal date night?

I would say something interesting, along the lines of a hot-air balloon ride followed by an amazing dinner overlooking the city.

Besides your music, what do you want to be remembered for?

Being a focused and driven person who always does what I want. Once I’ve set my sights on something, I don’t let anyone or anything get in my way.

Describe a favourite family memory.

Travelling through Africa in a Kombi with my Dad when I was around 10. It was the first time I saw the whole continent, and it was an incredible trip filled with a lot of unforgettable moments. It was an adventure to say the least

What more can we expect from you this year?

First of all, a lot of new music! You can expect to see CB in a lot more areas of the entertainment industry as well as property. One of my main focuses right now is to develop the building in Jeppestown and create an extension of the Maboneng Precinct. I want to see Joburg become a metropolitan gem. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 27

ENCORE 125 PRODUCTIONS. 10 YEARS. 3,7 MILLION PEOPLE. AS MONTECASINO’S TEATRO TURNS 10, WE TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH THE INSTITUTION’S GM, BRYAN HILL

Big Read | Features

Joburg Style: You opened the Teatro in 2007 with The Lion King. How did that impact the Teatro? Bryan Hill: The Lion King was an iconic success and the perfect show to kickstart the theatre. It contributed to the Teatro’s ongoing success as it highlighted the theatre’s qualities and set a high benchmark. It ran for nine months, attracting over 550,000 people, and is the longest running show in South African theatre history. It also attracted great names and celebrities, adding to the Teatro’s glamour and status. We hosted people such as Celine Dion, Elton John and even Nelson Mandela on a most historic night. His bodyguards were upset because in his gracious way, Madiba wouldn’t leave without shaking everyone’s hand that he could.

“Movies will make you famous; television will make you rich; but theatre will make you good” – Terrence Mann

How has the Teatro impacted the performing arts sector in Johannesburg, or even South Africa? Very positively. We’ve had about 125 productions over 10 years, attracting over 3.7 million people – and counting! The Teatro has impacted theatre attendance and increased the size of South Africa’s theatre-going audience. We continue to attract first-time theatre-goers who return again and again once the bug has bitten. We’ve been conscious of the need to provide a diverse mix of productions so that we continue to draw people into the theatre, not just here, but to other Tsogo Sun theatres, too. From a theatre development point of view, we were incredibly fortunate to be able to open the Teatro for such a high calibre of productions, starting with Disney’s The Lion King, and to hold onto the Disney franchise for Beauty & The Beast and High School Musical, and for these productions to become the breeding ground for local talent. This meant that there was more available for performers to aspire to, and the training and training platforms increased, resulting in new talent being uncovered. We’ve got performers on stage in Priscilla whose first trip to the theatre was The Lion King; it’s been humbling to watch their growth. South Africa previously had limited ‘triple threat’ (acting, singing and dancing) training grounds, and as a result of the number and quality of international musicals staged at the Teatro, we now have a far more solid ‘triple threat’ base. decade later, we’re now seeing performers become producers. There is no doubt that the Teatro has created jobs for the theatre industry – and will continue to do so for as long as producers like Showtime Management, Pieter Toerien Productions and Big Concerts share our passion and vision. What is the primary factor that most attracts South African audiences to the Teatro? The Teatro is all about entertainment; it’s not about heavy art. It’s about taking our minds off everyday worries and walking out of this theatre smiling. It’s also about inspiration, for instance War Horse was a remarkable show that made every visitor feel something. What are your personal favourite shows? Jersey Boys, it’s a perfectly crafted jukebox musical because of its strong story. Les Misérables has had the greatest emotional impact on me and Wicked is the show I’d most like to bring here. What are sure-fire hits for the Teatro? In 10 years, there’ve been three. Johnny Clegg, Hugh Masekela and The Parlotones – they’re guaranteed sell-outs. What role has Montecasino played in the Teatro’s success? Montecasino is Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination for good reason. It adds so much more to the theatre experience – excellent dining options, other entertainment, accommodation, security and a wonderful ambience. It’s a privilege to be part of the team that keeps Montecasino top of mind for entertainment seekers and to help keep the property’s offering fresh and ever changing.

THE LION KING

“South Africa has played a vitally important role in the life of The Lion King,” says Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Productions. “South African performers have been in every single production of The Lion King, from the first show in New York to the nine other productions, which have played to packed houses around the world. Audiences have seen and felt the extraordinary talent, warmth and spirit which these performers and the South African music bring to the show.” The Lion King was a momentous occasion for the Teatro, not only because it was the debut production for the theatre in 2007, but also because it marked the 10th anniversary production. The South African show was co-produced by Lebo M and Pieter Toerien, and after an exhaustive year of auditions, a full South African cast of 53 artists was announced. South Africans were also welcomed into the technical team and orchestra. But, the real hero was the theatre itself. The Lion King production demands enormous theatrical dimensions and a stage of specific proportions that simply weren’t available in South Africa until the development of the Teatro.

ANNIE LENNOX

In 2009, the Teatro hosted Annie Lennox in a way that few audiences had seen her before – unplugged. It was the first time that the multi-award winning singer/ songwriter had performed in South Africa as a solo artist and soon after Lennox had released The Annie Lennox Collection. The evening was used to raise awareness for the SING campaign, an initiative which she established to bring attention to HIV/Aids in Africa.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

In 2012, the Teatro extended the run of the blockbuster musical The Phantom of the Opera four times to accommodate over 200,000 ticket holders. “It was the first production where we saw daily ticket sales of over 2,000 tickets. Before this, the norm had usually been an average of about 1,000 for a blockbuster production,” reveals Bryan Hill, General Manager at the Teatro. “We had people coming to the show who had never visited a theatre before – it was an extremely gratifying experience for us as it has always been one of the Teatro’s main objectives to contribute to the growth of theatre audiences in South Africa.”

JERSEY BOYS

SWAN LAKE ON ICE

Two years ago, the world’s premier theatrical ice skating company, The Imperial Ice Stars, returned to South Africa with their interpretation of Swan Lake. The Teatro stage had an icy makeover and artistic director Tony Mercer introduced a new prologue to the classic tale. “I wanted to create a more realistic interpretation of this much-loved tale, with an ending that was more plausible and left no unanswered questions. I also wanted to transpose the story onto ice, creating a new art form in the process,” he explains. “I always felt it was a natural fit to have swans gliding on ice.” Audiences were enthralled with acrobatics, aerial gymnastics and pyrotechnic effects performed by 24 championship level skaters.

A slick and fast-paced show of the riveting tale that sees the pop group, The Four Seasons, go from being unknown New Jersey kids to international pop stars was certainly a standout production that came to the Teatro in 2013. Montecasino offered tailor-made hospitality packages to allow everyone, whether from Joburg or out of town, the opportunity to come to the Teatro and experience the Jersey Boys!

JOBURG STYLE’S FAVOURITE TEATRO MOMENTS “The level of skill and performance by the acts of Cirque Éoize iD was simply incredible” – Eric Bornman “I took my sister and brother-in-law to see the Shaolin Monks for my birthday. I’m a fan of the Martial arts, so it was really cool to see Kung fu lvie on an international stage” – Justine Kerr

CHICAGO

The cast of Chicago razzled and dazzled the Teatro stage in 2008. In fact, the 1920s jazz age was extended throughout the whole of Montecasino as 1920s themed casino promotions got everyone in the mood with substantial cash prizes in the build-up to the production’s opening night. The casino was alive with seductively dressed dancers, 1920s jazz and all the glitz and glamour of a bygone era.

LORD OF THE DANCE

The year 2008 saw the quick feet of Michael Flatley and his company of 40 Irish dancers hit the Teatro stage. It was the second time the dancers came to South Africa, but this time the choreography and set design were taken to new heights, making it one of the standout family shows put on at the Teatro. “We love putting our weight behind everything that’s magical ... Lord of The Dance is great entertainment for the entire family.”

“I remember seeing The Sound of Music a few years ago. It was incredible to see such a famous production on our home stage” – Sharon Preston “The Lion King – a world class production, as good as the London show” – Gina Borthwick

idden Shadows and Silent Voices of Prison Number 4 is a body of work created by photographer and artist Clint Strydom, which is currently on exhibition at Constitution Hill, and will be on indefinitely as the images have been donated to the prison as a permanent installation. The series of 23 photographs was taken on a high definition Hasselblad camera (on loan from local company SunshineCo) and printed and framed using the innovative Diasec method. Juxtaposed against the rough cell walls of the prison, these images have an incredible impact. “This body of work was an emotional journey,” Clint admits. “It took almost a year to complete. I visited the prison cell six or seven times without a camera just to get the feel for the energy that is still there. I’d lock myself in with one of the men who spends his days working at Con Hill, kick the door closed and then hope we would be able to open it later. We’d spend 10 minutes in the dark, the only light coming through the viewing window in the door. We’d imagine an incarcerated prisoner, 36 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

political prisoners such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Oliver Tambo who spent time here. “We’d ponder where to sit, where to stand to get that feeling, to feel the weight of the situation in each posture. We’d listen, engaged in the moment. Then I’d return and we’d lock ourselves in with a camera. I’d capture the spirit with an eight-second exposure, my ‘model’ would hold the position for four seconds and then move towards me, around, behind the camera. His image became transparent, evident in pieces. I could see the texture of the walls and the door through him.” Light and shadow, patterns and textures are Clint’s inspiration; he calls himself an “untrained artist who uses a camera”. The images at Con Hill are large – 1.5m x 1m in size, created using what Clint calls “mixing old school printing methods and modern framing techniques”. Clint has also created sculptures, including a bronze that is currently in the Football Hall of Fame in Mexico City. For the past two years he has trained in textile design and is currently

releasing a range of silk scarves that incorporate photographs that have been transformed into patterns and repetitions on the textiles. Future projects include a series of photographs capturing city life in Joburg as well as architectural shots, starting with a magnificent image of the civic building right next to Constitution Hill. He also plans to take on a project photographing the women’s prison at Con Hill. Aside from his eye-opening pieces on display at Constitution Hill, other examples of Clint’s work are currently also on show at The Melrose Gallery in Melrose Arch.

“THOSE CONSERVATIVE VALUES ARE LOST WHEN ONE LIVES IN A WESTERNISED ENVIRONMENT. BUT IT’S THE SACRIFICE WE MAKE WHEN WE HAVE TO LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OUR OWN COUNTRY”

Y

eoville is no longer an historic Joburg suburb, or a spin-off of Hillbrow. Today it’s a slice of Africa, a microcosm of many countries on the continent, a melting pot of cultures, traditions, languages, cuisines and people. The three largest groups are Zimbabweans, Nigerians and Congolese. Each of these communities has its own particular area. In Yeoville, the Congolese turf takes up three blocks along Raleigh and Rockey Streets, including the street above (Hopkins) and below (Hunter), forming a square. And in these three square blocks, you find a community centre, a market, a Congolese restaurant – and 10 churches of different persuasions. This tiny little slice of Yeoville is where you go when you arrive fresh off the plane from Kinshasa and where you go to meet other Congolese people and to network at the community centre, Kin Malebo. This is also where you go to purchase traditional Congolese ingredients, including dried fish, yams, okra, cassava leaves and other items at the market (called Soko in Swahili and Wenze in Lingala). Those Congolese people who have made Yeoville their home live in the blocks of flats and houses lining Hunter and Hopkins Streets and the streets going down towards Raleigh and Rockey. These people have left their homes because of the political strife in their own country, where earning a meagre living is far harder on the streets of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi than it is here in South Africa. “We have Top Beer with friends. come here to make a life and Bottom Yeoville market a safe haven,” says Herald wares. 42 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Kavuala, who has lived in South Africa with his family now for more than 15 years. The Congolese traditionally speak French, but most also speak English to a certain degree, as well as various dialects including Swahili and Lingala. They are a quiet, conservative people, whose love of music is renowned (the rumba is the style of their music). “Music is our lifeblood,” Herald explains. You’ll hear the beat of the music when you visit the community centre on weekends and in the evenings; a place where groups of people, young and old, get together to chat and drink a beer or two. The beers are always local Congolese brands – Black Label, Simba, Tembo, Skol and Primus. You don’t buy your own here – everybody puts money in a kitty and purchases the beer for the entire group to enjoy. For the Congolese, family and religion are paramount; part of tradition, a way of life, something instilled in every child from the day they are born. “It is traditional to eat together as a family,” Herald explains. “This means that we wait until every single member of the family is home before we sit down for dinner.” But that’s just a part of the family tradition. Children never leave the house without being blessed by one of their parents. They respect their parents, confide in them and ask for advice from them even when they have families of their own.“Religion is an integral part of Congolese life,” Herald says. The family prays together before meals and before

going to sleep at night. They also go to church at least three times a week. “We often stay at the church overnight on Friday, then go to morning and afternoon prayers on Saturday and attend the Sunday service.” There are three main church groups – Catholic, Protestant and Methodist. Why are there so many churches? Herald looks surprised at the question. “So that there are enough churches for everybody,” he replies. Luc Kazaba lives in Rosettenville, a spin-off of the Congolese Yeoville community. He calls this area the “new territory”, and says that like Yeoville’s Little Congo community, this area also has community centres where everybody congregates, markets and shops selling traditional foods and restaurants where you enjoy Congolese fare. “Main Street and Geranium Street are the two main Congolese areas in Rosettenville,” he explains. “There’s something secure about being in your own community.” Not all of Yeoville or Rosettenville are exclusively Congolese. Most of the bars found in both areas are Nigerian run. Luc, who has been in South Africa now for 11 years, bemoans the fact that the traditional, essentially African lifestyle of the Congolese is lost here. “Those conservative values are lost when one lives in a Westernised environment,” he says. “But it’s the sacrifice we make when we have to look for opportunities outside our own country.”

This traditional establishment was the first fondue restaurant in the city – try the Adler Special fondue or the Raclette, which comes highly recommended.

DAY 2

This morning, see Zurich from a completely different perspective, on a cruise on Lake Zurich. There are several tours available of various duration. So, relax and enjoy the scenery. The shore is lined with promenades and parks where you can relax or have refreshments. After the cruise, it’s time for another adventure – a funicular train ride. The Polybahn has been in operation since 1889, and transports a maximum of 50 passengers every two minutes on the very same route it has used since inception. Refurbished in 1996, the train is fitted with state-of-the-art technology. Take the funicular to the magnificent 125acre park high above the city and visit the extraordinary Dolder Grand Hotel, originally built in 1899 and then refurbished in 2008. The hotel’s famous restaurant is ideal for lunch, but even if you just explore, the remarkable city views will take your breath away. Enjoy typical steak or sausage and rosti potatoes, before exploring this amazing property that includes a nine-hole golf course and pool complete with wave-making machine. Then head back down to explore the city’s trendy western neighbourhood, whose former factories and old train viaduct have been transformed into trendy bars, edgy art galleries and quirky boutiques. There is so much to discover here, including the contemporary art museum, the Kunsthalle. Spend your last evening at Bierhalle Wolf in the Old Town, where you can savour good classic Swiss food washed down with an abundance of beer in a typical party atmosphere. Try the schnitzel, spätzle egg pasta or bratwurst sausages, and plenty of great tasting beer served in large beer mugs.

STAY Eric’s choice: HOTEL ADLER This charming hotel started off as an inn in the 11th century. Refurbished in 2014, it’s located in the heart of the Niederdorf area in the Old City, just five minutes from the Bahnhofstrasse. It’s a very stylish place, with comfortable rooms offering scenic city views. David’s ideal: BAUR AU LAC For almost two centuries, this historic establishment has hosted celebrities, royalty, actors and musicians. Located in a private park on the lakeshore, it is ideally situated right next to the Bahnhofstrasse. The hotel is one of the Leading Hotels of the World, so accommodation and dining are superlative. Have a light meal or drink at the al fresco Terrace restaurant, the city’s hotspot in summer.

AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY Läderach Chocolatier Suisse Nothing in the world beats FrischSchoggi (fresh chocolate), and this fine Swiss chocolatier is one of the best you’ll ever taste. In fact, Joburg Style’s Eric Bornman refused to go for a day without his stash. Luckily, the stores are found throughout Switzerland, so he indulged himself in Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and at the airport! www.laederach.com Chocolate walking tour A glorious two-and-a-half hour stroll exploring a selection of chocolate shops in Zurich’s Old Town with a food expert as a guide. Tasting the products is part of the fun, so indulge. Mountain cheese and chocolate tour Spend a day exploring the countryside just outside of the city. Visit the Lindt outlet store and sample fine cheeses at a traditional Swiss cheese factory. Ride an aerial cable car to Mount Hoher Kasten for scenic views over the Alps. WHEN ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL SMART SMARTIES

SO, YOU THINK YOUR BUSINESS TRIP IS A BREEZE? YOU HAVE NO IDEA THE LENGTHS TRAVEL SPECIALISTS HAVE TO GO TO IN ORDER TO PLAN A JOURNEY FOR FAMOUS CLIENTS WILD REQUESTS AND HOW THEY WERE DEALT WITH

Business trips aren’t always fun, especially if you’re having wall-towall meetings and have had to carry kilos of brochures in your luggage from one capital city to the next. But, let’s consider what it’s like to go bigger than that…. to take a rugby team on a tour, for instance, or transport a celebrity rock star with an ego to match. Flight Centre Travel Group’s Stage and Screen Travel Services is a specialist division of the travel company, whose job it is to make the impossible possible. They design travel solutions for clients in creative industries, such as advertising moguls, media boffins, publishing peeps, fashionistas and the like. They call it their ‘haute couture’ approach, which translates to being just as creative as the people they tailor trips for, making something unworkable work like a dream, no hitches allowed. Think about it. A group of rugby players, their coaches, their vast amount of

luggage, their day-to-day travel itineraries, their PR, their individual wants and needs… all of this has to be put together like a giant puzzle so that the trip takes place with as few hassles as possible. The travel specialists have to take care of everything in advance and plan with meticulous attention to detail, so that every item of luggage is accounted for, every person’s itinerary is organised to the last minute, everybody knows where and when they have to be at a certain place at a certain time… of course, there’s more. There are early check-ins, late check-outs, Wi-Fi and Internet solutions, dietary requirements and all sorts of other problems that need solving. Now, aside from the vast amount of planning that goes into a journey of this nature, there’s something else that has to be taken into account. No two trips are ever the same. And that’s where Stage and Screen Travel Services’ expertise comes in. Take a look at a few examples...

1 2

On a trip to South Africa, a famous rock ‘n’ roll band were explicit when it came to their demands. They stipulated in their performance contract that they be given a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed. Their reasoning? If the organisers were prepared to go that extra mile and remove brown chocolates from a bowl, then they would read the rest of the contract just as thoroughly and be as meticulous with all their other instructions. According to Stage and Screen, unusual requests like this one are regular occurences, but there’s always a reason, just like there was in this instance. And no matter how strange the request, it needs to be followed.

LIGHT AND SHADE

For one celebrity performer, Stage and Screen had to have all 26 windows of the entire suite tinted. This was done, and then the tint had to be removed when the celebrity left.

SURFING STYLE

When a celebrity insisted that their surfboard couldn’t be transported on the roof rack of a car, it got its own car, driver and all.

5

4

TOO BIG FOR THE CABIN

It’s not easy to transport a 36kg harp that is 2m high on a plane. For starters, airlines don’t permit more than 32kg of luggage per passenger. The only way that Stage and Screen managed to get this musical instrument transported was by purchasing a seat in the cabin for one leg of the journey. They then sent the harp as freight for another leg, and then, finally, it was sent as luggage.

COLOUR IT BEAUTIFUL

An artist requested that the rental car be repainted in specific colours. Of course, Stage and Screen Travel obliged. The car had to be repainted once the artist left town.

6

I’M LATE, I’M LATE…

When a top band was late for a performance in Brisbane, the organisers found a way to get them there on time. They were flown from the Gold Coast in a helicopter and dropped right outside the stadium. The logistics for that miracle were mind-boggling – permits were required and the timeline was ridiculously tight.

FEED ME!

Often, celebrities and stars request that their hotel mini bar be replaced with a full-sized fridge stocked with a selection of their favourite foods, some of which have to be specially imported.

CRAZY REQUESTS “Odd requests aren’t just prima donnas flexing their muscles,” says Stage and Screen Travel’s National Operations Leader, Adam Moon. “Rather, they are the bits and pieces that people living a hectic life need to make things just a little more normal.” Stage and Screen Travel Services. 087 740 5181 | www.stageandscreentravel.co.za | experts@stageandscreentravel.co.za

SPACES

On your annual trip to the Cape this summer, don’t race through the Karoo with blinkers on. Stop over and discover some of the magic hidden in the sand

I

f you take the time to discover the magic of the Karoo, you’ll see that there’s much more to this desert region than just stocking up on lamb chops or dancing in the dust at AfrikaBurn. In fact, during a recent road trip to this diverse destination, the Joburg Style team discovered an array of activities that surpass the usual antiques roadshow and succulent spotting. Stretching for nearly 40,000km² in the geographic midriff of South Africa, the Karoo boasts a sky so bright that it feels like you can touch the stars. In fact, many flock to this part of the world to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way in a manner in which you will rarely see it elsewhere. It’s this vastness, stretching as far as the eye can see, that highlights humanity’s insignificance. A real antidote to the stresses of modern living. Visitors to the Karoo seldom go once. In fact, this remarkable desert possesses a mysterious force that draws people

back time and again. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of its quaint farm-style charm, something you can experience when you stay on the myriad guest farms available, or perhaps it’s the eccentric local characters dotted around the dorpies who provide constant intrigue. Regardless, we bet that once you get a real taste of the Karoo, you’ll be hooked. Stand on the red, dusty ground at any time and know that beneath your feet lies a millennia’s worth of stories. A veritable treasure trove of fossils, the Karoo basin is famous among palaeontologists for the record it holds of the transition between reptiles and mammals, a crucial spot towards our evolution as humans. Part reptile, part mammal fossils of creatures known as Dicynodonts (a specimen that’s over 253 million years old, predating dinosaurs) have been found here on Samara Private Game Reserve, which is the spot we suggest visiting first, as we did. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 59

STOPOVER IN SAMARA

Located on 70,000 acres of wilderness in the Great Karoo, just outside of Graaf Reinet, Samara Private Game Reserve sits just 53km away from the nearest town, Graaff Reinet, and offers breathtaking views over the plains of Camdeboo. The reserve has undertaken a massive conservation project, an effort to create South Africa’s third largest protected area in a global biodiversity hotspot. As it’s home to over 60 mammal species including aardvark, Cape mountain zebra, giraffe, black and white rhino, buffalo, eland and cheetah, it’s not hard to understand why.

Milky Way Star Bed Enjoy a sunset picnic in the wilderness, watch wildlife go to the waterhole to quench their thirst as the night sky unfurls, then curl up under the stars in a four-poster bed under a draped mosquito net in the middle of nowhere, with just the Milky Way for company.

WHERE TO STAY The Karoo Lodge

The Karoo Lodge offers five-star luxury in a meticulously refurbished farmhouse that overlooks a natural amphitheatre in the mountains. The farmstead combines every possible colonial comfort with modern luxuries and features four Game Lodge Suites that open onto a wide wrap-around verandah. There are also three Karoo Suites, set in stand-alone cottages a short distance from the main homestead, each with a fireplace, luxury en suite bathroom,

This luxurious five-star villa is built on the site of a 19th century homestead. Decorated with beaded African artworks and traditional Karoo antiques, the stylish manor house boasts breathtaking views, a 21m infinity pool and a waterhole nearby. It features

WHAT TO DO

Picnics are a delight, with a choice of stunning settings, from a wilderness breakfast on a blanket to a gourmet spread in the mountains. Karoo Lodge has a boma for dinner next to the fire and guests at Manor House can enjoy a starstudded sky in the bush.

Track cheetah on foot

A highlight of a stay at Samara is being able to track wild cheetah on foot. Thanks to several habituated individuals, starting with Sibella, who has become synonymous with Samara, the lodge offers exclusive viewing of wild cheetah to its guests, which involves tracking the cheetah on foot.

Melrose The biggest attraction in this beautiful tree-lined suburb is its mixed-use development, Melrose Arch. But, just around the corner in Wrenrose Centre are other hidden treasures. Sharon Preston discovers where to go in Melrose

O

nce filled with beautiful old houses with big gardens, the area that lines the M1 Highway was razed to the ground around 2007 and rebuilt into the only precinct of its kind in the city, a place where you can live, work and play without having to leave. The project, which cost R8 million, completed Phase One in 2009 and has since been expanded to include two hotels, apartments and offices, a selection of upmarket shops, restaurants and entertainment. And more construction is on the cards. Melrose Arch is home to ultra modern apartments that many use as a pied-à-terre, corporate rental or airbnb, though there are some who live there permanently. Many travel there daily to work in the offices and numerous retail stores. The numerous restaurants include a branch of Jamie Oliver’s Italian and French chain Paul’s first bakery. For relaxation, the Piazza and the Square are filled with sidewalk cafés and interesting stores. Heading towards the residential part of Melrose are beautiful homes and townhouses on wide, tree-lined streets and the James and Ethel Gray Park. Across the road, on the border of Birdhaven and Melrose, is Wrenrose Centre, two buildings with a smattering of stunning shops and two very popular restaurants.

Explore | Cool District

DINING

Wrenrose Centre’s Arbour Café & Courtyard is open for breakfast and lunch. Sample a gluten-free galette (buckwheat pancake) for breakfast and choose from an array of delicious meals for lunch. For healthy fare and great deli items, head for Voodoo Lily Café on the corner, where you can sit on the sidewalk or indoors and enjoy a selection of salads, sandwiches, sushi, main meals and desserts. Melrose Arch offers so many dining choices, but long time favourites include The Orient, which specialises in Asian fare. Its dim sum is as legendary as its chocolate mousse balls for dessert and the sushi is sublime. Moyo is popular for locals and visitors, with live music on weekends accompanying stunning traditional South African dishes. Mezepoli is one of the most popular Mediterranean restaurants in town; the choice of delicious tapas and sushi makes it a favourite, and the main dishes are divine. Pigalle is fine dining fit for royalty; a restaurant to enjoy for special occasions. And now there’s also Jamie’s Italian, where you can’t get in to sample the celebrity chef ’s dishes unless you book a month in advance.

COFFEE

Melrose Arch is famous for its coffee shops, especially internationally famous The Grind Coffee Company, which has made appearances on Instagram because of its espresso served in an ice cream cone. If you prefer drinking your coffee slowly (the cone takes three minutes to melt), you can enjoy a cup of the seasonal three-bean Arabica house blend created by coffee expert Dayne Levinrad in a cup. Diehard

coffee lovers also rave about Naked Coffee, a tiny coffee shop located inside a clothing store. There are only a few tables, and you often have to wait your turn… the coffee’s that good. Il Cantuccio is a small Italian coffee shop inside the galleria that offers espresso or cappuccino plus snacks. Or enjoy coffee in the sun at Wrenrose Centre’s Arbour Café .

STAYING OVER

If you’re looking for a luxury boutique hotel close to Melrose Arch, but far away enough to enjoy a little peace and quiet, The Peech is our choice. A gorgeous retreat in a beautiful garden opposite Wrenrose Centre, it offers beautifully decorated rooms, an excellent restaurant, bar and pool. In Melrose Arch, there’s the African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel, the precinct’s landmark luxury establishment that is a cut above many of Joburg’s five-star city offerings. With quirky décor including rubber ducks for the bath and tables in the swimming pool, this iconic hotel is a treat. Equally quirky, the Protea Hotel by Marriott Fire & Ice adds a touch of fun and frivolity. The hotel is also a great meeting place for drinks – its milkshakes and signature cocktails at the hotel bar are legendary.

NIGHTLIFE

Aside from Melrose’s restaurants and bars, there’s the exclusive club, Churchills Bar, an upmarket bar and lounge that offers fab food, fine cigars and one of the largest selection of single malts, premium whiskies and champagnes in the city. 66 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

This elegant emporium is also home to an array of extraordinary timepieces from many top Swiss horologists (you’ll find fine examples in 24H, Joburg Style’s watch supplement) as well as a curated collection of beautiful international jewellery pieces (think Piaget, Fope and Roberto Coin). The window displays are enough to have you gawking; stepping inside is a journey into a realm of retail and personalised service that is unlike anything else. In keeping with this exclusive feel, shoppers can browse a selection of high-end stores including Bang & Olufsen,

Each apartment will have access to secure basement parking. Aside from the advantages of being able to live in the city’s only live/work/play precinct, an apartment here is an attractive investment proposition. Whether you buy to let it out, or use it as a pied-à-terre, you’re investing in the ultimate lifestyle experience. The Melrose Arch lifestyle for this prestigious apartment block includes a brand new health club in the building, exclusive use of the luxury amenities at the Marriot hotels in the precinct, including the bar and the swimming pool, plus a range of retail stores and motor dealerships that is unsurpassed – we’re talking the likes of Aston Martin and Rolls Royce. 48 hours IN THE 031 BORN AND BRED DURBAN LOCAL TREVEN MOODLEY TAKES US ON A WHIRLWIND ADVENTURE THROUGH HIS VIBRANT SEASIDE CITY 9AM Start off the day with a rigorous grooming regime at my favourite off the wall beauty parlour, Buff. It’s been referred to as the ‘little shop of miracles’ and is filled with everything you need (and plenty of surprises)! From a life-size Betty Boop to quirky components and magical elements, Buff is turning heads and attracting clients quick and fast.

Day 1

11AM Fashion is on the rise in the 031 and supporting local establishments is what we’re about. I’m making it my mission to shed light on all that is creative and trending in our local scene… O.S Man Tailors prides itself on crafting bespoke suits to meet its clients’ personalities and, being a full-time presenter, this is just what I’m after. Sure, it may take a little time, but you can rest assured knowing they use the best materials and have impeccable craftsmanship. 12:30PM Anyone who knows me knows that the only way to my heart is through my stomach. Food and I have a 72 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

very strong connection, and as I come from an artistic background, food presentation has always been a personal joy. The conservatorylike interior, the unpretentious atmosphere and the mix of contemporary Mediterranean and Portuguese flavours are just a few of the reasons why I love Umhlanga’s newest dining hotspot, The Village Table. Munch away while you overlook the beautiful Indian Ocean! 3PM Taking a few snaps on the Umhlanga Promenade is always good for your Instagram feed. Try standing dead centre at the iconic pier (it was designed to resemble the rib cage of a whale) or simply play a little with the perspective of the lighthouse. The promenade is studded with a host of stunning accommodation and day and night activities to keep the whole family entertained.

5PM Happy hour at a local watering hole will help ease in the night as the sun begins to set over the hills. Let me introduce you to Lucky Shaker, an oasis for those looking for a little luxury. They’re a small but passionate team, dedicated to ensuring guests have a memorable visit. (Think of them as the hosts of the best house party you’ve ever been to.) Sit back and sip on a fresh fruit drink, savour a fine whisky or share a punch bowl while you soak up the atmosphere and have a little fun. 7PM Round off the day with a visit to the trendy Café La Plage; it’s sure to entertain you all night as all the waiters are performing musicians! This French-inspired restaurant and bar serves signature dishes and cocktails accompanied by vibrant music mixes. PS Try the salmon – it’s to die for.

TREVEN MOODLEY

10AM Today I start my day with a visit to the Umgeni River Bird Park. I know what you’re thinking… yikes, who wants to go visit birds, right? It’s a shame that many Durbanites find the bird park boring; we tend to go there only on school excursions and rarely make a return trip during our adulthood. But one visit back and the child in you is bound to return as you enter! A real highlight is interacting with the 800 birds in their natural habitat. And to think you’re just down the road from a metropolis. Sometimes a change of scenery can be so refreshing!

Day 2

12:30PM I call Story Café the best hidden gem in Durban. I have totally fallen in love with its story… once upon a time, a dreamer envisioned his perfect space – a charming meeting place for connoisseurs of fine food, fine wine and engaging conversation. Now, the chef tells everyone that his reality is even better than his dream. The menu here is always changing to keep up with daily fresh produce and to create new stories on every plate. Story Café is a true celebration of living in the moment! 2:30PM There’s an amazing energy buzzing through the veins of my city at the moment with the addition of the

Rivertown development and the launch of our first weekly artisanal market, The Morning Trade. But, another equally chic city gem has been quietly developing, the Station Drive Precinct, which already houses Open Plan Studio, The Foundry (the best coffee in town) and well-known leather goods brand Savior Brand Co along with its new offshoot, Savior Coffee Co. This little hub is like a city within the city. 6:30PM Rounding up an eclectic day in the newly developed city centre, I highly suggest a vibrant walk on the Durban promenade while taking in the city skyline and maybe having a sundowner (or two!). After having travelled abroad, I can certainly say that I am proud to call Durban my home. The beat of this city resonates into everything and everyone, and its sense of family and community is something to be proud of… come and hear our city sing!

Treven says he’s an ‘architecture nerd’ with a perpetual artistic side and a devout passion for all things design. “Architecture has enabled me to witness the world in a vastly different light, the way in which designers subtly change and alter daily living, allowing people to enhance their best attributes.” Treven describes his mix of urban street and preppy haute fashion as “bipolar menagerie”. His vice? “I have no filter,” he jokes.

MASCARPONE & BERRY WAFFLE STACKS Okay, we admit it, we did have a little help from our friends on this one. RED RED WINE

AS AUTUMN DRAWS INTO WINTER, IT’S ALL ABOUT CURLING UP NEXT TO A ROARING FIRE WITH A GLASS OF RED WINE. SO, HOW TO CHOOSE? A RUBY, FRUIT-DRIVEN YOUNGSTER OR A CLARET-HUED, AGED WINE? WE TASTE SOME LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FLAVOURS

W “South Africa’s viticultural history dates back to the mid-17th century, with a number of established wine estates having roots to the days of the Cape Colony”

e’re very fortunate to live in a wineproducing country like South Africa, which is going through a ‘vinous renaissance’, explains wine critic Tim Atkin. The headliners today boast a new generation of innovative winemakers, dubbed ‘The Young Guns’. This select group has revolutionised the wine industry in South Africa by revisiting the essence of ‘winemaking in the vineyards’ and focusing on developing the highest quality of raw materials from which to craft their product, says Atkin. More attention is now directed to virus-free vines, and planting new and more relevant clones. While Newton Johnson’s Albarino focuses on unusual varieties for South Africa, David & Nadia prioritises resurrecting old vines, and Lismore in Greyton plants vines in unchartered areas.

Newton Johnson, Keermont and Crystallum have all had success in producing wines from single vineyards, and Donovan Rall and Duncan Savage have managed to create new, unusual blends thanks to looser regulations compared to the rest of the world. Part of their success is down to the fact that this new generation of winemakers is the first to have travelled around the world observing, harvesting and making wines, while sharing and learning new ideas and techniques with others across the globe. Together with our diverse and distinct terroir and climate – from the cool maritime sites such as Hemel-en-Aarde to the warm inland regions in the likes of Stellenbosch, and from rich clay soils to granite schist – this global thought and technique sharing has given South African wines world-class status.

IT’S IN THE FAMILY

While we love a good tasting red, we love a cute back story even more, and these wine farms have us falling in love with their heritage tales of keeping the family in the biz… David & Nadia After the birth of their two sons, the Sadie family decided to reconnect with their Swartland’s roots and follow their wine dream of restoring a 220-year-old cellar in the Siebritskloof, Paardeberg.

Newton Johnson This family-run winery in Hemelen-Aarde near Hermanus is famous for its Burgundy style wines and is known for constantly innovating its single vine wines while adding new grape varieties.

Cape Rock A winery in the Olifants River region, 300km north of Cape Town, which creates unusual blends with minimum intervention in the cellar. This family farm sells wines at great value for money.

Keermont Situated in South Africa’s second oldest and biggest wine region, Stellenbosch, this range of fine wines is created by the Wraith family with minimum intervention in the cellar.

EXPERT OPINION WAYNE VISSER, AN AVID WINE COLLECTOR AND FOUNDER OF GREAT DOMAINES IN 2000, IS AS PASSIONATE ABOUT SHARING WINE AS HE IS TASTING IT (LUCKY US!). WE SAT DOWN WITH HIM FOR A TRUE VINICULTURAL LESSON

How should you begin collecting wines? Decide what having a wine cellar means to you before you commit any money to storage facilities. Is your intention to buy wine early in its life, and then to mature it in optimum conditions for enjoyment later? Or does it mean you buy bottles to keep on hand for drinking at random? If you’re looking for the latter, then it’s best to only buy a few extra bottles each time you buy wine and build your collection that way. In this case,

go for basic, dark and vibration free. But, if you want to buy extra wine to mature in your own cellar, then you need to make sure that your cellar area has the basics. What do you need to make a good wine cellar? A space where the temperature is constant and no more than 19 degrees Celsius (this temperature works for short to medium storage of wine and anything higher than this will cause even faster maturity). The cellar should also be dark and lights

should only be switched on when necessary. It also needs to be vibration free, so don’t pick a spot near kitchen equipment that has a motor, such as a fridge or a washing machine. Ultimately, you need to bear in mind that cellar space and racking and cooling equipment is expensive, so this cost shouldn’t be incurred if your outlook is short term. What is your favourite food and wine pairing? As a general rule, any food and wine pairing that does not clash is a good one; however, there are some classics… lamb pairs very well with pinot noir, and beef is good with a Bordeaux blend. A grenache blend is delicious with sticky pork spare ribs and, of course, don’t forget chocolate with a shiraz!

WINE TALK

Terroir Refers to the soil and climate where the grapes are grown and is ultimately responsible for the quality of the wine, its unique flavour and aroma profile. Angel’s share The portion of a wine in an aging barrel that gets lost due to evaporation. Minimum intervention To produce terroir-specific wines that express themselves naturally, the winemaker uses minimum intervention in the cellar without adding anything or manipulating the fermentation process, as this will impact the flavour and aroma profile of the wine.

A PERFECT PAIR(ING) Thanks to Marble’s Duncan Savage Red and Seared Tuna pairing, we’re quickly admitting that the right flavour combinations of food to beverage can lead to appreciating your well-earned glass at the end of a long day that much better. Here’s why… On the nose, the Duncan Savage Red wine shows perfumed notes with hints of blood oranges and red fruits. Following through onto the palate are flavours of cranberries and strawberries supported by a touch of spice. Thanks to the elegant flavours shown on the palate, this wine still carries grippy tannins (not too over the top), making it the perfect sidekick

for tuna. Tuna is a red meat game fish so it still carries quite a lot of fat and oiliness, which balances out with the grippy tannins of the wine. One of the most important things to consider with a pairing is the alcohol percentage, and with the Savage Red showing a touch lighter than 13 percent, it convinces the mind that it can handle a bit of heat. The Cajun spice with the grilled pineapple in the dish adds a touch of sweetness, which mediates the Cajun heat and lifts the fruit intensity in the wine tremendously. Your mid palate gets blown away by all of the red fruits!

Warming dishes abound, including savoury Thai curries and there are lots of noodle offerings, each one more tasty than the next. You can enjoy tea and dim sum, delectable sushi and a selection of delicious noodle dishes and stir-fries to warm up even the coldest heart. The restaurant is also well known for its wide selection of cocktails, which certainly take the edge off the chill and add a perfect touch to a menu that is a delectable journey into Asian cuisine.

ADAPTATION – MICHAEL MEYERSFELD IN TOTO GALLERY

www.intotogallery.co.za ‘Adaptation’ is a recent collection of photographs by this renowned Joburgbased photographer, who is famous for his depictions of a country that is slowly readjusting to democracy after two decades. In a series of 17 black and white photographic images, Meyersfeld draws the viewer’s attention away from the obvious to nuances of change to images that are staged as a social commentary. “Perhaps these images are no more than a reflection of something we might have seen or remembered, a wry cameo of another, newer, hopefully happier South Africa. A country that still bears scars, but that can unashamedly show them, because there is a belief that time will heal,” he says of this collection, which offers a rich understanding of South African society.
