The issue also contains a separate supplement that focuses on exquisite honeymoon destinations. It features a selection of exclusive jet set locations around the world that all offer heavenly honeymoons. We fill you in on what’s on trend right now – we’re talking France and the Maldives – as well as beautiful beach holidays, extraordinary adventures and bucket list experiences. We’ve added a couple of Real Honeymoons, too, to give you an idea of where some of our readers have chosen to spend this special time, and a plethora of local destinations. Whatever you do, don’t disregard your own shores. South Africa has become one of the most sought-after destinations in the world for a stunning getaway, so take advantage of your proximity to some of the most delightful places to get away from it all. They may be close to home, but that doesn’t stop them from being exceptional.

"Make sure to be in the moment because the day goes by very fast"
he couple originally met on the school bus in primary school and have been inseparable for more than 24 years. He proposed while they were sharing a picnic breakfast. “When I woke up on the morning of the wedding and looked out of the window over the Bona Dea estate, the first thing I saw was my wedding arch being decorated with beautiful flowers. The venue was breathtaking. We had four coordinators who took care of everything, so we didn’t have to worry about a thing. This set the mood for our magical day. Everything was impeccable; we were amazed at how quickly it went by,” says Nomaswazi. “A highlight for me was when my bridesmaids made a circle around me and prayed over me.

“Each bridesmaid stood at the bell towers to ring the bells just before I walked down the aisle to the love of my life. Thato’s highlight was when I walked down the aisle towards him. Part of our prize is a stunning five-star, two-week honeymoon at the V&A Waterfront in a plush, private apartment with every possible luxury thrown in. We have decided to keep our honeymoon prize and use it to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in 2018.” Their advice for a couple about to tie the knot? “Take your partner’s wedding ideas into consideration. Also, make sure to be in the moment because the day goes by very fast. It also helps to have a very good coordinator, like we did!”
"He got down on one knee, told me that he couldn’t live without me and asked if I would be his wife"

iki and Suzanne met at a club at the Waterfront at a friend’s birthday party. The couple were in the same Honours class at UCT, and were introduced at the party. They started seeing each other regularly after that. Niki proposed while they were on holiday visiting friends in Warsaw. At some point, the group separated, and while Suzanne was waiting for Niki, she noticed a piece of paper on the ground. “On the paper were the words ‘look up’. So that’s what I did. Amber was at the top of the viewing tower, waving. She pulled out another sign, which read ‘turn around’. As I turned around, I saw Niki, down on one knee. He said some beautiful words and then asked me to marry him. ‘Are you crazy?’ I responded. He took that as a ‘yes’ – and we then all celebrated with champagne at a fancy hotel nearby.” Niki and Suzanne first got married in Norway (Suzanne’s home country) in August, 2014. And then they got married

We decided to call the event at Landtscap ‘a celebration of life and love’. The day was just that – a wonderful celebration full of joy, shared with family and friends. In hindsight, I’d have started planning earlier. I also suggest that couples be prepared that things won’t necessarily go exactly as planned. he couple met at church. Meeting Pro was a stroke of sheer serendipity, says Jannelle. It was a chance meeting at church. “We were always at the same events, but we didn’t actually get together for two years, when a friend organised a lift for me with Pro… and as they say, the rest is history!” Pro didn’t propose in the traditional way. “He said, ‘I’m going to your family to ask for your hand in marriage’ whilst nibbling on a chicken drumstick. He later surprised me with a ring just before he went to my parents to pay lobola. Our wedding day was the epitome of class and elegance; we honestly can’t fault any service provider. Our décor was sublime and sophisticated and the venue provided us with the perfect backdrop.”

he couple first met in 2004 when they were studying together. Eight years later, while on a holiday in Europe, Craig proposed at sunset on the Bridge of Santa Trinita in Florence. “It was the most incredibly surreal moment I have ever experienced. To the left of us was a view of the Ponte Vecchio and to the right the sun setting over the River Arno. He dropped to one knee, told me he loved me and asked me if I wanted to return to Florence one day as husband and wife.” All of this came true exactly two years later. Their wedding day was simple and elegant, with a beautiful view. “From the immaculate gardens where we held the ceremony to the reception on the terrace under the Tuscan sun, we watched the city light up as we ate under the stars. It was far more beautiful than we had imagined, with 40 of our nearest and dearest travelling to Florence to share the most magical experience of our lives. It was simplicity meets grandeur,

combining our decorations with the villa and views. After a decade of being together, we shared our love for family, friends, travel and our engagement in Florence. This day encapsulated everything we ever wanted, needed or dreamed possible. Our decorations were simple white flowers with touches of gold to reflect the history of this beautiful city without detracting from the view. It was everything I ever dreamed of.” Advice to brides-to-be? “Don’t stress over the small things; the day will always turn out the way it is meant to, so enjoy every minute, it goes so fast!”

Tsholo was hired there two years ago as a promo girl and met him on her first day there. “After he met me, he hired me to work at The Sands full-time. Then, once we officially started dating, he fired me!” The couple dated for 17 months before Litha proposed. They had planned to go out for lunch one day, and while Tsholo was getting dressed, Litha went to have a meeting with her dad. “He went over to my dad’s house, and told him that he was ready to marry me and wanted to get the lobola process moving. Two weeks later, the family came from Port Elizabeth and met with my family here in Johannesburg. Ten days later, on my birthday on 10 August, we got married.” Tsholo and Litha had four weddings in total. Guests were greeted by a live jazz band and served cocktails and canapés in the Sunken Garden. The reception décor was quite spectacular, with glittering crystal chandeliers, long floral garlands and luxe draping. The highlight of the day was opening the dance floor at the wedding reception. “This was our first opportunity to really step back and truly absorb the overwhelming love from our friends and family who had travelled from all over the world.” The two stayed in the Cape after the wedding for a few days’ honeymoon. “We have since been blessed with a beautiful baby girl and are planning our honeymoon for later this year. PHOTO BOOTHS ARE ALL THE RAGE Ever been to a photo booth and had fun taking pictures? Well, this is a new trend at weddings right now, courtesy of Photo Booth, a group of photographic professionals including Tim Hulme, whose photographs often grace the pages of this magazine. Their Photo Booth offers high-end equipment, superior lighting and a state-of-the-art printer, producing photos worthy of being published in a glossy magazine. There are also printless solutions for social media uploads. LIVE PERFORMANCES Having a live performer at your wedding is very popular right now. One of the country’s most sought-after stars is singer and pianist Christof van der Berg, who is based in Cape Town. He has also earned international acclaim as a pianist and performing artist. Originally from a little town in the Free State, he has travelled extensively around the world and lived in Dublin when he worked as an entertainer for an exclusive celebrity lounge called Lillie’s Bordello. He is currently based in Cape Town. His collection of soulful songs, Portraits of a time in Bohemia, tell the story of his time spent living with a group of artists in Constantia in Cape Town. The show featuring these songs premiered in Cape Town and was then performed in Dublin in 2015. During his performances, which include weddings and other special events, Christof includes a varied repertoire that encompasses swing and jazz, folk music, music from the ‘60s to the present day and Afrikaans music. He also performs at the Table Bay Hotel at the V&A Waterfront every Wednesday from 2pm. www.cvanderberg.com www.nubianbride.co.za |

TRENDS SPECIALITY DRINKS For 2017, full bars at weddings are being replaced with tasting stations that are set up so that guests can sample just one alcoholic beverage, like craft beer, wine, champagne, whiskey or gin. Create a tasting experience where experts take people through the rituals of drinking a particular tipple and the recipes involved. This includes education, fun and some great taste experiences thrown into the mix. For all your mobile bar requirements, as well as event staff, dĂŠcor, events and anything else you require, contact Drake Events. It will cover everything for your Big Day, drinks included. www.drakeevents.co.za
MAKE IT THE MALDIVES The honeymoon destination of choice for 2017 is the Maldives, a magical set of untouched coral islands located close to south-west India, all featuring stunning white sand beaches, pristine coral reefs and blue, blue sea. There is a choice of exotic resorts, each on their own private island, most of them with over-water villas and facilities, making a honeymoon here a heavenly experience. Take a look at the Nubian Bride Honeymoon supplement that comes with this issue for a list of luxe resorts in this charming destination.
DRESSING UP
COLOUR IT BEAUTIFUL Two colours stand out for wedding themes this year – blush pink and the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2017, Greenery. The delicate blush pink that is trending in 2017 is an elegant, feminine choice for a romantic wedding. The colour green symbolises new beginnings and the Pantone colour Greenery (15-0343) is a refreshing and revitalising shade of this hue. Reminiscent of lush foliage, this colour epitomises the inherent beauty of nature. Our designer, Lucy Nkosi, is crazy about the combination of sage and oxblood, a stunning combo using these two shades at their edgiest.

For autumn/winter 2017, the bridal trends seen on international runways feature offthe-shoulder gowns, plunging necklines and sleeves. Skirts are ruffled, tiered and feathery, much like we saw on the Oscars red carpet, and the focus is on long sleeves that flutter, billow or gracefully embrace in lace iterations. Ball gowns, A-line dresses, modern creations and bohemian sheaths all feature bare shoulders. Take a look at the stunning fashion pages in this issue for inspiration (pages 66 to 75 and 88 to 96).

SO JOZI Joburg has a unique beauty, history, character and style, making it an ideal location for a wedding for those who are lucky enough to live there. Tickled Pink Weddings & Events has created an urban chic wedding to celebrate your love and your appreciation of this iconic city
PLANNING
T
he main inspiration for the colour palette is the bold Shweshwe fabrics that were recently released by Three Cats, in bright pink, orange, green, turquoise and yellow. For an urban edge, accents of black are used and gold is added as a metallic accent, alluding to the ‘City of Gold’. White is included to give the feeling of freshness. All of the colours are set against the gritty, raw, distressed textures and neutral tone of the city’s signature backdrops.
Venues Each of the three different venues offer a real sense of the city. 1Fox the Sheds is an awesome event space with raw, rustic, textured walls, whilst Shine Studios provides a stunning backdrop close to the city with views of Newtown. Randlords features a different city perspective from up high. This is a stunning venue where guests can sip champagne at sunset while taking in the breathtaking view.

Stationery, signage, food and name tags Take the opportunity to embrace Joburg’s edge, with handmade Shweshwe envelopes and liners for the invitations, layered invitation cards with graphics that pop with colour, rusted beaded twine name tags, creative signage display and more Shweshwe used for signage. Food tags are in casual script, ginger beer bottles have customised labels and informal seating areas are created with crates and Shweshwe scatter cushions. The seating chart is inspired by city street vendors, another ingenious idea. www.nubianbride.co.za |

PLANNING
A touch of history The Guest Book idea, inspired by street tailors and old-fashioned handicrafts, is a stunning display that pays tribute to a long-lost era. A vintage sewing machine with a quilt created from blocks of Shweshwe fabric offers a selection of plain blocks where guests can write special messages. There’s also a framed wall mount giving instructions and a framed quote by Nelson Mandela that reinforces the sentiments of our predecessors.
Ceremony The backdrop for the ceremony is an artistic display built from textured panels of corrugated iron, fencing, shipping crates, old doors, gold sequined fabric and a raw string curtain of light bulbs. Touches of gold remind us that this is Jozi, and the Shweshwe cushions on the crate ottoman take the African theme one step further.
Flowers Bouquets were created using handcrafted beaded wire. The giant pincushion main bouquet features a Shweshwe wrap, while the two other bouquets are equally eye-catching and innovative, featuring metal flowers in one and raw wooden proteas in the other, crafted from repurposed wooden spoons. www.nubianbride.co.za |
115
PLANNING
Main table The raw wood banquet table and yellow retro industrial chairs make an interesting feature, decorated with a Shweshwe runner. The hanging egg lantern cage lighting, enamel pedestal bowl with a handcrafted metal flower arrangement, unusual vases and colourful place settings are all indicative of the unmatched pieces that make up the city of Joburg.
Candy buffet A highlight of the décor, this brightly coloured display with its assortment of spaza-style candies and traditional South African desserts is a delightful addition. The attention to detail is tongue-in-cheek, a glimmer of what gives this incredible city its distinctive personality.
Wedding gowns and bridesmaids’ dresses Two very simple white gowns with a touch of African chic epitomise what Jozi stands for… a modern city that still holds on to its traditional values. The bridesmaids’ dresses were created by two designers who captured the city’s glitz and glamour – a 'Sex in the City' style that is chic, hip and happening, shimmering and sexy. Just like Joburg.

PLANNING EXPERT ADVICE
ON TREND TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS International wedding planner Precious Tumisho Thamaga, CEO of Precious Celebrations™ Luxury Weddings & Bespoke Celebrations, offers advice on planning a traditional wedding
T
he trend right now when it comes to traditional weddings, according to expert international wedding planner Precious Tumisho Thamaga, is towards adding a more modern touch. “I suggest giving up those kitsch traditional African elements like skins, mats and spears, and going for something more modern, with stylish elements. Bring the cultural element in with flowers and colours, something clean and modern that still tells the story.” www.nubianbride.co.za |
121
PLANNING EXPERT ADVICE
Precious Tumisho Thamaga has planned and coordinated more than 200 exquisite wedding celebrations all over South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. As CEO and Founder of Precious Celebrations™, she is an expert in eventing, PR and telecommunications in both the retail and hospitality industries. She started her own empire in 2007 and turned her passion and skills into a lucrative business. Precious Celebrations™ has been operating as a registered company since 2011. Her knowledge, experience and commitment is legendary.
Trending in traditional weddings More couples are choosing to have their traditional weddings at a beautiful venue rather than at home, Precious says. This is because most of the traditions take place in the house before the guests arrive. “Rather have your traditional celebration in a lovely space, one that’s not limited to a narrow street for a marquee.” As parents of the bridal couple want both a traditional and a white wedding, Precious suggests combining the two. “It’s a great idea,” she says. “You’ve got everybody at the venue; they’re all in one place. You start early for the traditional wedding, make the décor flexible so that it includes a little bit of the traditional. And then you continue with the white wedding. The bride could even wear a wedding gown with little ethnic touches added to it. This translates into one big celebration.”
EXPERT ADVICE ON PLANNING A TRADITIONAL WEDDING
Why it’s important to hire a wedding planner Whether you’re having a white wedding and a separate traditional wedding, or combining them, Precious explains the importance of having a wedding planner. “It makes the bridal couple’s life so much easier,” she says. “Firstly, you save money, as the planner has a relationship with all of the suppliers and can negotiate better rates for flowers, food, etc. “They are experts in what they do, they have experience in planning a wedding and they also know how things work. Thirdly, you can’t put a price on peace of mind. Having somebody else handle everything makes it less stressful for the bride. The planner has a reputation at stake and will ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.”
122
| www.nubianbride.co.za
• Make sure you’ve saved enough money for the celebration so that you aren’t surprised by unexpected costs. • When it comes to the guest list, plan ahead. Try to estimate the amount of people who will be coming. This is more difficult when it’s a traditional wedding, but you need to have expectations of how many guests you have to feed instead of working on an estimated amount. • If you’re using a planner for a traditional wedding, that’s fine. But don’t expect them to be there on the day. This is a family affair. They can assist with all the planning, but they can’t get involved with the family dynamics. • Remember, a traditional wedding is all about bringing two families together. This involves a lot of pressure. So follow the customs and traditions and listen to what the elders want.
Book a dream wedding special in Mauritius. It’ll be the second best decision you make.

THE ULTIMATE STR ESS-FR EE WEDDING EFFORTLESS ELEGA NCE AT SEA Against the backdrop of sweeping sea views, an officer in uniform reads out beautifully written vows, the scent of flowers softly mingles with the ocean breeze while the champagne chills, ready to pop and fizz. Everything is perfect. And then there’s you, the bride, sublimely relaxed … because you didn’t need to lift a finger to pull any of this off. There are so many reasons why cruise weddings are becoming so popular – the heightened romance, the exotic destinations, the exquisite sunsets – but perhaps the biggest draw card is its sheer simplicity. Because how many brides have 18 months to throw at planning an event? It’s absolute heaven for the bride who doesn’t have time to manage every last detail. Catering, decorations, flowers, venues, seating arrangements, menu cards, DJs, directions, chair rentals, cake tastings, searching for photographers, videographers, officiates and musicians … these are just a few of the items you can scratch off your to-do list when you decide to get married on an MSC cruise.
No matter which package you book, the silver, gold, or platinum, you’ll have the full personal assistance of MSC’s wedding planner while on board. You’ll get your own bridal bouquet and a matching boutonnière, an exquisite venue, elegant flowers and décor, music, sparkling wine, a personalised wedding cake, and of course, an officer to conduct your ceremony. Of course you can choose to add your own personal touches. You can have your own bridal bouquet delivered to the ship, you can bring in pops of bold colour with petals and table runners, you can display your engagement photos, put out a special guestbook, add personalised name decorations, or bring in garlands, confetti and cake toppers. Just be sure to run everything by your wedding planner beforehand. Once the ship has set sail, resources are limited. À la carte extras can also be added to your package, from spa and beauty t r e a t m e n t s , h a i r a n d m a k e u p, photographers and videographers to champagne breakfast in bed. You can
spend your mor ning in absolute relaxation, getting massages, getting your hair and ma keup done, daydreaming about your perfect day ahead, knowing that everything is taken care of. And the seamless planning is not the only reason MSC cruise brides are so carefree, it’s the budget too. MSC’s wedding packages are affordable. In fact, you’d have quite an impossible time trying to find an alternative for the same value. More and more couples are choosing to take the fuss out of their wedding days. They want to be just as relaxed as their guests … clearly an easy thing to do when you’re tying the knot on board an MSC cruise! Contact MSC on

HONEYMOONS
HONEY MOONS IN KENYA
Whether you’re looking for a sun-filled beach holiday or a getaway in the bush, Kenya offers a choice of exquisite honeymoon locations
Misty mountain high
M
ount Kenya is Kenya’s highest mountain and the second highest mountain in Africa. Designated a World Heritage Site, this breathtaking mountain is surrounded by lakes, dense forest, mineral springs and a wide selection of rare and endangered species of wild animals. A honeymoon here involves mountain climbing, exploring caves, spectacular game viewing and a choice of adventure sports including white water rafting, zip lining and bungee jumping. As part of the area is on the equator, you can also include a trip to famous Mount Kenya Safari Club, with its pristine gardens filled with a plethora of birds and olde worlde colonial luxury. Here you can enjoy high tea before receiving a certificate for visiting the equator. It’s lots of fun, educational and the spread of cakes and sandwiches is delicious. We suggest staying at the atmospheric Mount Kenya Safari Lodge, located at the base of the mountain. This cosy wooden hideaway looks out over a vast waterhole where a variety of wild animals come to drink. There’s even an underground watch point where you can get up close to the animals without disturbing them. Dining here is a delight, with varied menus every night, and you can cuddle up together in your warm cabin with its private verandah overlooking the waterhole.
HONEYMOONS
HONEYMOONS
Magic of the Mara
A
highlight of any honeymoon is being able to experience a number of bucket list adventures, such as viewing the Big Five not once, but twice in one day on game viewing drives and flying over the plains as the sun rises, watching the animals from up high as they go about their business. This is an ideal honeymoon option, complete with staying in a luxurious tent, where it’s just the two of you ensconced in your huge double bed at night, listening to the sounds of the wild outside. If you visit in the winter months, like we did, the weather is sublime during the day and just a little chilly in the evenings.
You can still enjoy an outdoor shower in this weather, and you also stand the chance of viewing the magnificent migration, when thousands of wildebeest head from the Serengeti to the Kenyan Masai Mara plains. Remember though, nothing is guaranteed in the wilds; the animals behave as they see fit. So you might see the migration, or you might miss it the day you’re out on safari. Either way, you’ll see a variety of wild animals in their natural habitat, which is its own adventure, even if you don’t get to see a multitude of animals making a river crossing, which is a highlight of the migration. You can certainly learn a lot about the people who live in this beautiful part of the world by visiting a Masai village. You’ll be welcomed by the men of the tribe, introduced to the women and children, and enjoy learning about their culture and traditions. It’s a fascinating visit with a chance to buy some of their meticulously made handicrafts as well.
HONEYMOONS
HONEYMOONS
Sun, sea and sand down south
O
n Kenya’s south coast you’ll find a tropical wonderland, a selection of luxury hotels each offering a pampering beach holiday. Whichever one you choose, you’ll enjoy plenty of time soaking up the sun or taking advantage of the many activities on offer, including a variety of water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and snorkelling. In addition, the resorts offer spas, beauty salons and superb dining opportunities. We stayed at the plush Swahili Beach Resort on Diani Beach, a Moorish castle offering a choice of beautiful swimming pools, a pretty beach, excellent Indian restaurant, beach bar and buffet restaurant where daily delights include an entire seafood section or pasta if you prefer, and a selection of daily specials that made every meal an adventure.
HONEYMOONS
The accommodation is exquisite and spacious with a living area, balcony, huge double bed under mosquito nets and a bathroom and shower that is literally palatial. It’s tempting to stay put and spend long, lazy days together at the pool or on the beach, but we do suggest exploring a little. A popular day trip is to Wasini Island. You travel down the south coast to Shimoni past lush greenery and palm plantations, and board a traditional Arabic dhow to sail into the Wasini Channel. En route to Wasini Island you may see dolphins and even turtles frolicking in the waves. The island, which lies off Kenya’s southern Indian Ocean coast, is right next to the stunning Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, where you can enjoy superb snorkelling opportunities. You then enjoy a stunning seafood lunch on Wasini Island and afterwards, you’re taken on a historical tour around the Wasini fishing village, or, if you prefer, you can relax next to the beautiful pool.

REGISTRY
GIFT REGISTRY ETIQUETTE Fiona Hilton from Yuppiechef offers advice on the etiquette involved in compiling a wedding registry and purchasing a gift from the registry
KitchenAid stand mixer is a classic for bakers. Most pieces from Le Creuset cookware are must-haves, as are beautiful, quality glassware.
Q What would you consider to be a no-no? A Small ‘gadgety’ things that the couple will probably never use or that won’t last. Guests want to buy you lasting, memorable gifts for your wedding, not a vegetable peeler or a box of cookies.
Q. What would you consider the perfect registry gift? A The most popular brand on all our registries is Le Creuset, so I’d say a classic cocotte from Le Creuset.
Q When is it OK to buy something that’s not on the registry list? Or is this never an option? A It’s OK to do this, but make sure that the item isn’t on the registry, in which case the couple could get a duplicate. Keep in mind that the whole point of setting up a registry is to guide guests towards what the couple really wants and needs.
Q How much is too much for a registry gift? A Don’t limit your registry to lower priced items as there will always be guests who club together to buy you a more expensive item. Offer them a choice.
Q What is a decent price to spend on a friend/family member/work colleague? A Most people spend around R850 per registry gift with Yuppiechef, but this obviously depends on your personal budget and your relationship with the couple.
Q What sort of gifts should be included on the registry list? A If the couple is starting out in a new home, they will definitely need all the basics for the
kitchen, including good quality but affordable crockery, cutlery, glassware, small appliances and cookware, plus basics when it comes to bed linen and towels. If they have the basics, then this is the time for an upgrade, such as a more desirable brand of kettle (think Smeg), a higher thread count for linen (400tc) or a beautiful wine decanter.
Q What are absolute essentials? A The latest and greatest kitchen appliance – NutriBullet is big at the moment and the 166
| www.nubianbride.co.za
Q Do you have any other advice regarding the gift registry? A If you would prefer to buy a gift for the couple that is more expensive than anything on the regisry, but cannot afford to do this alone, why not club together with a few friends or family members? Also, if you are not keen to purchase any of the gifts listed on the registry, you can always give the couple a gift voucher valued at whatever you wish.

For a sparkling bride From celebrities to royalty, we all love champagne. Here’s some advice on this glamorous drink, plus a chance to enjoy a free wine tasting
On trend LANSON WHITE
This is a new generation of champagne, sweeter and softer. With the addition of berries, orange zests or mint leaves, it is a stunning welcome drink and the perfect accompaniment to a stylish and sophisticated wedding.

here is nothing more extravagant than a bottle of champagne, from the pop of the cork to the delicate mousse, the beautiful nectar awakes all five senses. It may be an expensive beverage, but once you understand how complex and layered the process is to make it, it becomes worth it! Although most South Africans call all sparkling wines ‘champagne’, it can only in truth be labelled such if it is from the French region of the same name. The Champenois (inhabitants of Champagne) have perfected the ‘art of blending’ and sparkling winemaking (through secondary fermentation in the bottles), key to champagne for over four centuries. Some champagne houses, such as Champagne Lanson, the fourth oldest (est. 1760), continue to follow the traditional method, developed over many generations, to ensure that every bottle is crisp, fresh and zesty with exceptional purity. Some, such as Champagne Pol Roger, established in 1849 (Winston Churchill’s favourite bubbly),

are still owned by the same family. Their mantra: ‘We are not the best known, but we are known by the best’. Although South African bubblies can’t technically be called ‘champagne’, the ones named Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) have been created using the same traditional method. Like champagne, there is an entire range of vintage and nonvintage wines, and also blended versions. Although South Africa’s maiden vintage Kaapse Vonkel (Cape Sparkle), Simonsig’s flagship, only dates back to 1972, local bubblies are growing from strength to strength thanks to master winemakers like Pieter ‘Bubbles’ Ferreira from Graham Beck and rising star Paul Gerber from Le Lude. Although most of the MCCs are made from traditional champagne grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), some adventurous winemakers are successfully exploring with new varietals. Examples are winemaker Christa von La Chevallerie in Swartland with her Filia, a Chenin Blanc, and John Loubser from Silverthorn’s Genie.
