ubian Bride magazine was founded in September 2010. We staked a claim to the title of this industry-leading bridal magazine, which was obviously vehemently contested by the establishment. The New York Times Magazine had the final say when it validated us as the African bridal thought leader last year. Game, set, match, with that signalling that our work was done. As founders, we’ve been fully invested emotionally and otherwise, but the time has come to step aside and make way for new thinking, to make way for an exciting new era and an exciting new order. It is therefore with great sadness, but great confidence in the future of this beautiful brand, that we announce this to be our last edition at the helm. We’re handing over the reins to one of South Africa’s brightest bridal talents and entrepreneurs, Precious Tumisho Thamaga, also known as Precious The Planner of Precious Celebrations. kinseye planned the proposal well – they were on vacation at a resort on the south-west coast of Ghana and he had set up a heartshaped enclosure made out of candles and rose petals. After dinner, they walked back to their villa and Itumeleng walked straight into the middle of the beautiful setting. That is when Akinseye cued the hotel staff to start playing a particular song that they both liked. He held her hand, and says about himself, “I started mumbling – the words just tumbled out hurly-burly, I was so nervous – and then I got on one knee… she had no inkling until then – she thought it was just a super romantic gesture.” Their wedding day was a truly magical day. “It’s hard to describe it in just a few sentences, but it was a full day of experiencing love in its most intense, purest form – from each other,

from family and friends, from above – and the memory of it will stay with us forever.” If the couple could have changed one thing about their day, they would have wanted the day to last longer than 24 hours. “We simply didn’t want it to end and, in true form, the wedding lasted until 4.30am.” For Akinseye, the highlight of his day was seeing his wife for the first time walking down the aisle in dazzling white looking like a peerless vision of beauty. Itumeleng says that for her the highlights were, “The exchanging of our vows – it was a special moment where we got to make eternal promises to each other in front of people who are very dear to us: our God, family and friends. The ‘alone’ time we got to spend while doing the couple shoot, walking hand in hand and finally getting to talk about everything that had happened before the church service at our respective getting ready venues, how we felt leading up to the ceremony and how we felt after the ceremony, in a perfect silence while the guests had gone to the reception venue. Lastly, our first dance… aaah, an indescribable moment that made a

Michael&Zelphinia Mike and Zelphinia met through a mutual friend in Johannesburg. They were both working for a multinational IT company and Michael was on assignment from the US

t was not exactly love at first sight. Zelphinia says that she actually thought he was quite arrogant. “Only after I saw him with his kids did I see a different aspect of his personality and became interested in knowing more about him. In fact, our first kiss was two years later on top of Table Mountain.” For the proposal, Michael planned a romantic weekend getaway to a spectacular lodge. On the big day, they took a trip to the beach and walked along the shore – the setting was beautiful. After dinner at a beachside restaurant, they returned to the lodge where rose petals were spread over the floor and bed. Michael says he poured champagne and they talked about their future, vision, love, values and priorities. Michael says, “We often talked about marriage, so I said, ‘If I were to ask you to marry me, would you say yes?’ This was a question she had heard often, so she

frowned and said, ‘I am not answering that question and do not want to hear it anymore,’ – a typical Zel response. I smiled and said, ‘I will never ask you that question again except this one last time,’ so (with ring in hand) I asked, ‘Will you marry me?’”, and, of course, she said yes! The vision that Zelphinia had of a ‘vintage elegance’ summer wedding came alive at the all-iconic the forum | embassy hill. She says, “We were blessed with breathtaking mountain views, beautiful weather and a show-stopping floral arbour by Prickly Pear. It was a garden ceremony and we invited 90 of our closest friends and family to witness the new chapter in our lives.” They opted for simple but stylish décor, which consisted of crystal chandeliers and candelabras, white orchids, blush roses, a Perspex seating plan and white table linen. Wooden coasters served as wedding favours for their guests. When asked if they would change anything about the wedding, their reply was a resounding, “Nothing. It was the perfect wedding.” Zelphinia says the highlights of the wedding day for her were, “Firstly, when we exchanged our wedding vows during the wedding ceremony. We prepared them separately yet they were so similar – it was surreal. And secondly, seeing the bridal party looking beautiful in their unique dresses brought tears to my eyes.” Michael says, “My main highlight was seeing my amazingly beautiful wife walking down the aisle with my favourite song playing in the background, hearing the gasp from our guests and seeing the tears

flowing. She took my breath away in her body-hugging dress. It was a perfect picture of love, not only my love for her and her love for me, but that of our guests for us.” Michael explains how he felt when they first stood together as husband and wife, “It felt like the beginning of a new chapter in my life. After all the planning, stress and anxiety, standing next to the person you will face the rest of life with felt so secure, peaceful and complete.” The couple’s honeymoon was a six-month job transfer to Dubai. Seventy-two hours after they said “I do”, they were on a plane to begin a new life journey. The wedding was such a wonderful way to not only celebrate their union, but to celebrate the end of their journey in South Africa. The couple’s advice? “You should have a vision for your beautiful day. Make sure everyone, including your suppliers, buys into your vision – never compromise. dward proposed on a roller coaster ride on Brighton Pier in England. “They say life is a roller coaster, so why not get engaged on one?” Their wedding day was a celebration of two different cultures, with lots of singing, dancing, great food and fantastic entertainment. Funanani’s bouquet was a representation of the two cultures – she had roses representing England where Edward is from and king proteas representing South Africa, her home country. The day started off with a saxophonist serenading the guests as they arrived. They then had a fun and lively ceremony in the chapel, followed by pre-reception canapés, drinks and entertainment from traditional Venda dancers. The reception was in a grand banquet hall with plenty of space for energetic dancing throughout the evening. The venue was perfectly situated for both their international and South African guests to travel to, and had plenty of accommodation so that guests could stay and party well into the night. Funanani says that if she could

change one thing about her wedding day, it would be, “The fact that it could last for two days instead of one. The day goes so fast and we wish it could have lasted longer.” When asked what the highlight of the day was, Funanani says, “It was seeing everyone singing and dancing throughout the day. Between the starters and main course, guests spontaneously started dancing – young and old alike.” In the Venda culture, and generally in most African cultures, people have the most fun when they are able to sing and dance in celebration. She adds, “It felt special to stand together as husband and wife to finally say our vows with all our family and friends.” They went to Cape Town on honeymoon. “We had such a lovely time hiking up Table Mountain, kayaking with penguins and tasting all the delicious wine that Franschhoek has to offer. Some friends and family were also in Cape Town for post-wedding vacations and joined us for delicious dinners and parties. We couldn’t escape Edward’s parents who showed up everywhere, even on our hike at the top of Table Mountain!” What advice would they give to a soon-to-be bride? “Accept that your wedding day will have a life of its own. The bridal couple had the most magnificent traditional Xhosa wedding in KwaZulu-Natal. With a beautiful adherence to both of their cultural traditions, it was a day of love, beauty and style

"I wanted a dress that adhered to the tradition, but still made me look like a princess”
habile says that she wouldn’t change one thing about her wedding day. She laughs when asked how Sizwe proposed: “He didn’t really propose. He only asked me for my family’s contact details and told me he is planning to send his uncles for lobola negotiations.” She says: “Our wedding was a beautiful Xhosa traditional wedding. It started with umembeso, where the groom’s family presents the bride’s family and relatives with gifts. The second session was the officiation, during which the pastor renders a sermon and the bride and groom exchange vows.” The couple got married at Umnsinsini, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The venue was Thabile’s home – she says that they chose the venue for two reasons: “It’s customary for traditional weddings to be held at the bride’s house, and we both loved the landscape that the area offers. The venue is spacious, the forestry surrounding it was ideal for our wedding pictures and it seemed the most ideal place for the memories we were hoping

to preserve about our wedding day.” Thabile explains that they decided to go for a modern natural look. She says: “We love the look and feel of wood and woody colours mixed with gold and cream with a dash of black to try and blend it with our Xhosa traditional outfits.” When looking for the perfect dress designer, Thabile says she was disappointed at first as she battled to find the perfect supplier – she eventually met the designers of her gorgeous dress on the net. She says, “Their designs and styles were exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a dress that adhered to the tradition, but still made me look like a princess. A dress that was unique, elegant and stylish. The designers understood me and my style.” When we ask Thabile what the highlight of her day was, she says, “Seeing my husband crying (they were tears of joy) when he saw me walking down the aisle. And hearing his wedding vows. And seeing all our planning and hard work finally coming together so perfectly. Our décor, the wedding cake and the wedding photographers – they all synced so well. It was just too beautiful. Oh wow, it still feels like a dream.” Thabile is Zulu and Sizwe is Xhosa. She explains that the two cultures are not too different from each other. The wedding process is as follows: First comes the lobola negotiation process. The second step is umembeso (exchange of gifts by grooms family to the wife’s family). Then the traditional wedding similar to the white wedding except for the outfits worn. Ending with umabo (bride’s family presents gifts to groom's family). Matsela and Devon met in 2012 at a Maboneng restaurant called Pata Pata. Devon was an American tourist taking in the sights of Johannesburg and Matsela was out for Sunday lunch with a friend

he restaurant was filled to capacity, so when Devon and his friend walked in, they approached Matsela and asked if they could join her table. They started chatting and at the end of the evening they exchanged email addresses. Two years later, while visiting Matsela in South Africa, he took her back to Pata Pata for a drink. There was a live band performing. Matsela says, “The next thing I knew, he got up on stage with a microphone in his hand, the music stopped and he professed his love, and in front of a full audience, he asked if I would be his wife. I was pleasantly surprised as the entire restaurant applauded.” Matsela says that on the day of their wedding the weather was perfect. They had 100 friends and family join them on the day. It was small and intimate. “I am born and bred in Johannesburg and wanted a venue that is quintessentially Joburg, so I we went for Emoyeni in old Johannesburg (Parktown), which has views of The Parks and is a beautiful place to watch the sunset,” she says. “Devon is American and I am Pedi, so I wanted something that brought the two worlds together. My theme was a contemporary wedding that was inspired by my South African heritage. We wore the usual white dress and tailored suit, but accessorised with different South African ethnic accents,” says Matsela. “Instead of wearing ties, the groom and groomsman wore Xhosa beads (intsimbi). The bride and the bridesmaids accessorised with Ndebele dzila and sekgoloane. The bridesmaids wore pantsuits instead of dresses. I chose www.nubianbride.co.za |

rose gold and creamy white for the décor, and the king protea for the table flowers. The guests’ dress code was monochromatic (one colour from head to toe), which worked out beautifully.” Matsela planned and styled the entire wedding and used a wedding coordinator for the day. She is a stylist by profession and wanted a certain detail to be carried out throughout the day – she wanted it to be original. Matsela’s dress was designed by Pantora Bridal based in New York. Her brief was that she wanted a simple dress with a cape (for a dramatic effect). Matsela says that everything went smoothly, but she possibly would have started the ceremony an hour later as the 4pm summer sun was still quite hot. Other than that, the day was amazing. The highlight of the day was having Matsela’s 97-year-old grandfather join them for the day, all the way from Limpopo. longtime friend of Cliff’s met Grizelda at a wedding and was convinced she was the woman Cliff had been waiting and praying for. They, of course, are forever grateful that he made it his mission to make sure that they met. Cliff proposed at Grizelda’s favourite restaurant, Table50Two in Gaborone, Botswana. Situated on the 28th floor of Gaborone’s iconic iTowers, it has stunning views of the city. He rallied the waiters beforehand to be in on the surprise. Each of the four waiters had a piece of paper reading ‘Will’ ‘You’ ‘Marry’ ‘Me’ respectively. They came out one by one holding their paper. Grizelda says that she felt completely elated. Then Cliff walked up to her, suave and full of confidence, went down on his left knee and asked her if she would become his wife. Their wedding can be categorised as a destination wedding, as friends and family travelled from all over the world to join them on their special day. The Country Park Guest House became the wedding headquarters, and celebrations, last minute preparations and family meetings all took place there days before the big event. The couple were intent on having a wedding that focused on God and His love for them. “We had both prayed for the perfect partner and God

answered our prayers in His perfect time. The night before our wedding it rained heavily and even a little on the morning of our big day, but we were not fazed by it. The run-up to our wedding was laced with crises, but we knew the worst was over. Nothing would ruin our day.” Grizelda says that Cliff was a very involved groom and that he is the creative one of the two of them. He put his talent to very good use during the planning. If Grizelda could change one thing on her wedding day, she says, “I would be less worried. I worried about every single guest. I wanted to please everyone, to make sure everyone was ok, enjoying themselves, fed and comfortable. I should have trusted the process. My poor husband had to endure my incessant nagging. As always, he was supportive and kept me calm.” The highlight for Grizelda was seeing her groom when she entered the chapel. She says that he looked absolutely dashing. For him, it was at the reception when he could finally sit back and thank God that everything went off without a hitch. The couple experienced indescribable joy once they were husband and wife, “Contentment and gratitude towards God and our amazing friends and family who played pivotal roles in getting us to that beautiful moment.” They headed off to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains for their honeymoon and stayed at Cathedral Peak Hotel. Grizelda says that it was the perfect choice for relaxation and spending time in nature. They then made their way down to Fordoun Hotel & Spa in the Midlands. She says, “The food and service at both hotels were absolutely superb. Set against the backdrop of a magnificent Cape Dutchstyle homestead with a subtle undertone of farmhouse chic, the whole idea was perfectly interpreted as the ultimate intimate summer wedding for the most discerning of couples. Essentially, this look is a celebration of summer sunshine, bright and beautiful colours and the current fascination we all have with gin!

Event styling and dĂŠcor design Floral elements, a selection of vases and candles, bowls and linen napkins breathed life and energy into the shoot and set the

The venue’s beautiful wooden tables served as a natural canvas for the table décor without having to introduce any runners or fabric down the tables’ centres, for a more pared-back and original look. The periwinkle blue linen napkins and navy bud vases complement the wood and the florals perfectly, and add warmth to each place setting. Rustic ceramic bowls and yellow tumbler glasses offer a fresh take on tableware.
Flowers Flowers abound, with magnificent floral arrangements on the tables, as well as exquisite bridal bouquets, buttonholes and signature wreaths with mini clementines. The yellow, orange and red poppies stole the show and lifted the whole look of the table with their vibrance and intensity. Adding loads of foraged greenery to the florals made for a softer and slightly more relaxed look, which was perfectly placed in the cobblestone room with its green barn doors.
Photography Photographer Wynand van der Merwe’s main aim was to create beautiful and elegant photos at this gorgeous venue. Wynand is a creative photographer who loves to craft timeless images that tell powerful stories. He sourced Profoto B1 500 AirTTL lights together with a beauty
