Editor’s letter

T

FASHION EDITOR Natalia Fernandez

he first week of spring I travelled to my hometown of Qwa Qwa for my favourite cousin’s wedding. Before I tell you about the wedding, let me tell you something about Qwa Qwa, which is one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa – and only a few people outside the town know about it. There are mountains in every direction you turn and the air is so fresh that for many city folks it’s a little difficult to breathe in all the goodness. The wedding itself had all the makings of a great day – family, food and crazy uncles, flush from successful lobola negotiations. I’m, of course, happy for my cousin though I must admit I was elated for other more selfish reasons – the day restored my excitement and passion for weddings. My wedding revival couldn’t have come at a better time. Spring, the season of newness and the official start of the wedding season, is finally here! We made sure that this spring/summer edition celebrates the best of the wedding season, and the colourful proof is in the décor (page 115), flowers (page 112) and cakes (page 107). We are particularly excited about our planning article entitled Golden Age on page 17. We worked with some of the most talented people in the wedding Decor industry, including Eve Poplett from Splendid Affairs, who conceptualised a gold themed wedding using some of the hottest décor trends for 2013/14. For you to see the magic, we’ve Planning posted the behind-the-scenes video by Hauke Wedding Films, wherein yours truly makes a small cameo, on our website. The fashion section is always popular and we’ve attempted to cater to everyone’s taste. You are sure to find your perfect gown in the main bridal fashion shoot (page 44), our Africaninspired bridal fashion pages (page 56) or the gowns section (page 153). Please do share on Facebook or the Nubian Bride website if we helped you find your dream dress, whether you are getting married or not. We really appreciate all the digital love that you have shown us over the last year. Let us know what you like in the magazine, what you want Video to see more of, and comment on the many hot topics we post. Décor

When it came to styling the décor, my desire was to provide a look that exudes wealth, prosperity and ultimate beauty, yet doing so at very achievable and practical levels. If you study the table carefully it is very simple in terms of the design, yet there is unmistakable opulence. This combination provides sophistication and grace. Everything you see here is readily available in South Africa all year around. You will notice that we played with balancing the heavy textures of the gold urns with the light and ethereal nature of glass.

get the look by adding a touch of gold to the following • Base plates • Candles • Ribbon • Gold-rimmed crystal glasses • Planters • Gold tiffany chairs • Candlesticks • Tablecloths

Cake

A grand and opulent cake makes a beautiful statement at a wedding. This elegant five-tier cake has collars of white chocolate wrapped around the sides and is finished off with ivory iced roses and crystals. The cake is made with the finest ingredients and each tier is a different flavour, which gives your guests a variety to choose from. Remember, if you are worried that the cake will not be eaten, opt for some layers of cake and add a few dummy layers for height and WOW factor.

Flowers

We selected roses and hydrangeas for this beautiful table setting. Hydrangeas are soft, elegant and sophisticated and look dazzling in the gold containers and a tall glass vase. The glass vase gives a regal height to the arrangement. A simple selection of flowers, along with luxurious setting and bold choice of décor, creates breathtakingly beautiful arrangements.

of favourite wedding colours, the pathway to using more glamorous printing techniques is laid. Trendy gold foiling and traditional golden wax seals come together to set a brand new trend in wedding invitations. Given the regal style of this theme, a fine balance needed to be maintained between the fashionable new techniques and more subdued, classic design. So we combined classic typography with soft scrolls on shimmer paper and polished the design off with a glamorous foiling technique and traditional wax seal. The result is classic, yet trendy.

Creative Couture

A designer well known for his great attention to detail and his innate ability to emphasise the female form, Kobus Dippenaar has had the whole world’s attention for over a decade and there’s certainly no stopping him now

Designer stuDio

Kobus Dippenaar launched himself into the world of fashion when he began designing high school dance dresses for classmates who couldn’t afford to buy them off the rack. His mother, who had been a Home Economics teacher before she married, sewed the dresses he designed

A

fter being drafted to military service, Kobus completed a diploma in fashion at the Cape Town Technikon and spent the mid-1990s completing his studies in London in corsetry and millinery. He returned to South Africa in 2000, where his studio is located in the heart of Cape Town’s creative district. His designs have won the J&B Met awards for five consecutive years. “I’m a stylist at heart,” says Kobus. “I see the big picture – everything. I see the make-up, the hair, the mood, the tone, the fabric, the dress, and the shoes. It must all work together.” What made you decide to focus on bridal? Our couture market it limited. People are prepared to pay a little more for a wedding dress but they wouldn’t dare spend that much on a little cocktail dress. So what do you do? You want to keep growing creatively and you need a market. Well then, it’s only logical to expand into bridal wear. What is the ratio between bridal and evening wear in your collection? I borrow repeatedly from one range and use those ideas in the other. My ideas are easily transferrable – I just envision a different colour, a different fabric and maybe an embellishment here or there. But strictly speaking, I’d say the ratio is about 60% bridal wear and 40% evening wear. Talk us through the process, from the inspiration of each new collection, to the fabric sourcing and sample making. I'm not the kind of designer who will sit down and start out with page after page of sketches. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like this for me; I am very hands-on. I’ll feel the weight of a fabric,

and how that fabric and weight convey a particular mood. And then I’ll drape that fabric, noticing how it falls, what it does. It’s in this play that my ideas begin to develop. For example, tulle is ethereal; silk charmeuse is so glamorous; and heavy satin is perfect for draping on a woman’s body. That said, I do love to travel, to get out of my box. I am inspired by cultures and textures and smells and food. I’m like a sponge. I was recently in China and I noticed the origami, the cherry blossoms, the sensation of spring. That combination of headiness and ethereal lightness gave me ideas that I want to translate into gowns. And I should also say that my private clients inspire me. With them it's a collaborative process. And very often I will take an aspect from a creation for a private client and elaborate on it for a dress that becomes part of my collection.

I am inspired by cultures and textures and smells and food. I’m like a sponge How many stockists do you currently have for bridal, and what countries can your collection be found in? Obviously I can be found in South Africa – in Cape Town and Johannesburg. My dresses can also be found in Düsseldorf and Copenhagen, and recently my collection has been snapped up by Morgan Davies in London. How many pieces are in each collection and how many collections do you produce each year? I produce one collection for each of my two labels. That usually ends up between 18 and 21 for my Anna Georgina by Kobus Dippenaar line, and about 10 for Kobus Dippenaar Atelier. What are your favourite fabrics? I love heavy silk charmeuse – the way it drapes over a woman’s curves. And beaded tulle is wonderful because of its light, airy sparkle. And Chantilly lace – I adore it because of its old-world glamour. Do you have a studio? Tell us about your working environment? My studio is located in the heart of Cape Town’s creative district. The streets outside my studio are busy and alive and buzzing with energy; there’s a wonderful artisan coffee www.nubianbride.co.za |

DESIGNER STUDIO

rotisserie across the way. And my studio? Well, it’s creative and chaotic and crazy and I wouldn’t have it any other way! We have large generous windows that let in the sunlight South Africa is known for. My studio also has a voorkamer or salon – this is where I receive my private clients. The hottest trends for 2014 – can you define them? Oh, I think the movie The Great Gatsby made a big impression in the collective consciousness! So I suspect we’ll be seeing more bias cuts, illusion backs and very low backs, and fish tails. Got any views on accessories? Should a bride always go for high heels, for example, and should she always wear a veil? I have a very strong opinion about accessories – and that is that each girl should identify who she is and then dress accordingly. It’s not about convention for convention’s sake, for me. If a woman is athletic and doesn’t like killer heels, then she shouldn’t cramp her style. Of course, it can get tricky because she might like a dress that requires 4-inch heels. And I love veils but please, not over the face, because no one’s a virgin anymore. That’s just sacrilege, in my opinion.

WEDDING ETIQUETTE

NO MORE WEDDING PLANNING DRAMA Between high highs and very low lows, Bridget Williamson tells you how to survive the emotional rollercoaster when planning your wedding

P

lanning your wedding is an experience meant to be filled with love, excitement and anticipation, but it can very easily be riddled with emotional disasters and stress. There are some things that love just cannot disguise. Even the most relaxed and easy-going bride can find herself in a twist of emotional drama, from fighting with the in-laws to disagreements with your fiancé. To free yourself of wedding baggage, you need a good support system, deal with conflict head on, and know when it’s time to call in extra help.

Pictures: Getty Images

Phone a friend You are not ‘Super Bride’, you can’t do it all on your own. You will need a sturdy support network of your closest people. The ones who will understand teary midnight phone calls and going to a dozen dress fittings. Wandile Ndabambi, senior associate, says that her support network comprised of her younger sister, mother and boss. They all played a part in supporting her. You also need to remember to lean on your fiancé. “It’s very easy to get caught up in all the details of a wedding, so make sure that you touch base with each other regularly with dates, chats, walks or movies to remind yourself what it really is all about,” says Che Kershaw, blogger of indieberries. blogspot.com

Dealing with conflict With so many people getting involved in a wedding, it is understandable that you are going to get a few personality clashes – either

between your bridesmaids, family members or even between you and your fiancé. “Prior to selecting and requesting for assistance, I prepared a letter outlining my expectations and the obligations of each bridesmaid. When they accepted to assist, they knew exactly what they were getting into, just like a contract,” says Wandile. Kazaya Soobrayan, investment specialist, had to deal with conflict between her mother and future mother-in-law while planning her wedding. She sorted it out by dividing their tasks and giving them each something to do, making them agree not to get involved in the other one’s tasks.

When to get help There is only so much emotional stress and drama that you can handle before you completely lose your marbles. When the drama just gets too much, you may need to call in a neutral, uninvolved person to help sort things out. Depending on what you are having trouble with, you can seek help from your priest, a couple’s counsellor, or someone who isn’t involved in your wedding at all, such as a work colleague or a friend. They will be able to give you guidance and an outsider’s opinion.

Che suggests getting a wedding planner involved to alleviate some of the wedding planning stress. They will have no emotional involvement and have years of experience behind them.

Post-wedding blues Even if your wedding planning was full of stress and drama, you will most likely miss it once the wedding is over. You will never experience the excitement of announcing your engagement again, or any of the other exciting and fun moments that planning a wedding comes with. The post-wedding blues hit Che when she and her husband were on their honeymoon. Seeing another couple get engaged sent Che into a fit of tears. It ended with her making her new husband re-propose to her, just so she could get that newly engaged feeling again! The best way to combat the postwedding blues is to throw yourself into a new activity – decorating your new house, planning a family, celebrating married life, calling yourself Mrs, making scrapbooks of your wedding, or you can just live vicariously through your engaged friends until the blues pass.

PLANNING

Great The

Pre-wedding Party Debate Are pre-wedding parties still relevant today? Do they encourage bad behaviour or are they a great opportunity to celebrate? We talk to two brides who share their very different views of the practice Palesa Modise is a freelance journalist. She believes bachelorette and bachelor parties are a fun and healthy rite of passage.

Shruti Pillay is an administrative assistant at a publishing company. She and her husband agreed not to have bachelor/bachelorette parties.

Did you have a bachelorette party?

What are some of the reasons you decided not to have a prewedding party? We don’t drink for

Yes

Yes I did. Thami (husband) was not too comfortable with the idea at first. He is really old school and the idea of a bachelorette party never really sat well with him. He did not have a bachelor party. My sister and my best friend planned a surprise party for me, with his consent.

Did you have a say on how the day would go? Funny enough, yes. Neo (sister) and Mpho (best friend) were very clever. They kept on teasing me about how strict my man is, and pretending that they sympathise with me about missing out on such a special thing.

What does a kitchen party mean to you? I now consider them an essential rite of passage. A big surprise was that my friend had actually hired a stripper. I did drink more than I normally do.

Would you advise other couples thinking of having a bachelor/ bachelorette party to have one? Yes, celebrate your last night of being a single girl. After that night you are a married woman and in my culture this means you have to be dignified – no more wild parties, short dresses or anything like that.

No

religious and personal reasons. We are also not big party people. We didn’t meet that way and that’s not how we plan to spend our married life, so why start now. We were ready and wanted to be married and take that next step in our lives.

What did you and your husband do to celebrate the day before your wedding? We chose to spend the day with our families; many had travelled a long way to come to our wedding. We knew that we wouldn’t get to see much of them on the actual wedding day so it was nice to be able to catch up and let them know how grateful we were that they would be celebrating the day with us.

Would you advise other couples thinking of having a bachelor/ bachelorette party to have one? Everyone should decide for themselves but I think people should know that how you decide to spend your last day of singlehood says a lot about how you see marriage.

This was a suggestion for pre-wedding fun from the Nubian Bride Facebook page: “We’re going paint ball shooting and the ladies will go to a day spa for our bachelor/ bachelorette. I don’t feel the need to do anything scandalous because what’s the point of getting married then? I wouldn’t marry someone who insisted on having a stripper.” — Andy Wayne www.nubianbride.co.za |

Stars In Their Eyes

Two soap star sweethearts, Tshepo and Salamina Mosese, share with us how they made each other’s dreams come true. They also give good advice on how to weather the challenges of a young marriage and parenting. By Mmachigo Manase

CELEB TALK

S

Seeing young celebrities get married is as exciting as spotting a shooting star. This is why South Africans love Salamina and Tshepo Mosese. Salamina practically grew up under the public’s watchful eye, first appearing as the cute presenter with the sweet smile on etv’s CrazE. She also had a role in the charming teen series Soul Buddyz. Tshepo (known in music circles as Howza) became popular initially as a soulful rapper and songwriter. Since those early days, both stars have been rising steadily. Tshepo was furthering his music career, working with other well-known artists such as Selwyn, Amu and Bouga Luv. He also hosted the Christian lifestyle magazine show Big Up on SABC1. Salamina’s profile includes presenting Top Billing, and acting in Soul City and the international feature film Beat the Drum. Many people were delighted by reports in the media of them dating. Both are photographic models and they also acted together on etv’s soapie Backstage. There were of course whisperings here and there about them being an unlikely couple. The news of them actually tying the knot was a big surprise. Of course there was speculation about why such a young couple would get married. Why the rush? Will it last? Almost half a decade after their wedding in 2008, the two are still going strong. They look happy and work seems to be going well too. In 2012 Tshepo became the host of the reality show All You Need is Love, and recently became the host of the reality competition series Bar One Manhunt. The young Mr and Mrs Mosese definitely deserve a big up! We asked them a few questions about how they make it work and how they keep it fresh.

was the naughty, hell-raising student named Chase. We liked each other from the onset.

When did each of you know you had found the one? Tshepo: When I first met Sali, I just knew. I grew up watching her on TV and I had had a crush on her since her CrazE days. So meeting her, getting to work with her and becoming friends was like a dream come true for me. My mom remembers a day that I showed Sali to her on TV, and I told her that this was my wife. Sali: On first meeting Tshepo, I saw my future husband in him but I was still so nervous about it, it just seemed too good to be true. However, listening to the song that he wrote was confirmation for me. I prayed for a man like him, and I thank God every day that I got one of the good ones. I was so heartbroken when we met that getting to know him, even as a friend, was like applying healing balm to my wounds. I always joke with him that he rescued me from my past.

How did Tshepo propose? We went out for a stunning dinner at one of the restaurants on Long Street, and we were excited because it was our four-month anniversary. We had a lot to celebrate. The whole night was just so perfect; I guess one could say it was written in the stars. Just before they served the mains, he stood up, got down on his knee and proposed right there in the restaurant. I laughed and cried all at once. I didn’t say yes immediately, I said we would have to do it the cultural way first. So his family wrote a letter to my folks and we went to Polokwane together so that he could speak to my grandmother. He was the perfect gentleman. My family has loved him ever since.

How did you and Tshepo meet?

What were your thoughts on marriage before getting married? Did either of you have any other marriages to hold up as an example?

We met while we were both working on Backstage. I was his drama lecturer, and he

Tshepo: My parents are still together but Sali’s parents are divorced. We both didn’t

have perfect examples of marriage to hold up, but we both went into it fully aware that it would not always be roses, cards and candy. Sali: I was very apprehensive when Tshepo asked me to get married, because mentally and emotionally I wasn’t as ready as he was to take the big step. To get us both on the same page, we did pre-marriage counselling. I was petrified of ending up divorced and unhappy like my parents had been, so I needed to let go all of that first and learn to write my own story.

Seeing young celebrities get married is as exciting as spotting a shooting star

You got married young, especially for a couple in the entertainment industry. Were you ever concerned about how your marriage would survive under such pressure? Sali: Yes, of course we were concerned, but we also knew that what we have is real, and we were more than prepared to do the hard work of protecting our union. I always said I wanted to get married at 25 so that we could still have fun together, grow together, build a life and inspire each other’s dreams. So when Tshepo came along, I knew he would be the man to take me off the market. We are very private people, and this hasn’t changed.

Can you give us a brief description of your wedding day? Sali: We had a traditional wedding that became a ‘white’ wedding as the planning for the traditional wedding got more and more elaborate. It became more about what our parents wanted than what we had planned or had always imagined. Despite all the drama that came with the wedding preparations, on the actual special day the weather played along and it was a gorgeous day in September. When we changed into the www.nubianbride.co.za |

CELEB TALK

traditional attire, the real party started. We were exhausted at the end of the day.

What has been the biggest surprise to both of you regarding marriage and partnership? Sali: For me it’s the fact that you don’t suddenly become a new person with new interests, new friends and new hopes and dreams. These stay the same, yet you now have to share yourself with this person you have chosen to live life with. Tshepo: I have been shocked by how much young people do not believe in the institution of marriage, how it has a bad reputation as a life ender and a dream killer.

What have your roles as a mother/ father and wife/husband taught you about yourself and each other? Sali: I took to being wife easier than I did to being mom. The latter role made me extremely nervous. It exposed my insecurities and made me doubt myself at every turn. I think it’s the most important task that God assigns to us, and I pray daily for the guidance to be the type of mom who will remind her daughter daily how blessed, bright and beautiful she is. I have seen my husband become a more mature and more responsible man. He is so effortlessly good with Tumi. It is my favourite thing to watch them together.

Tshepo: I love being a parent more than anything else. My daughter has inspired my natural need to provide for my family. She has changed my perspective on life. When I wake up in the morning, I know why.

How do you and your husband ensure your marriage stays strong? We do not compromise on communication, patience, respecting each other’s views and thinking twice before we speak, especially when one is upset. From breaking of glasses to an array of different foods and music, Jewish weddings are not only a celebration of the couple’s union, but of the culture, writes Molife Kumona

The pictures in this article of Malcolm and Fleur's wedding illustrate the joyful celebrations in the Jewish tradition. The couple lives in Hong Kong. Their wedding in Cape Town was a mix of Fleur’s Chinese heritage and Malcolm’s Judaism.

fter an elaborate and romantic proposal at their favourite restaurant in Norwood, Johannesburg, and Belinda Milner saying “Yes!”, Alan Ziegler and his bride-to-be were off to prepare for their wedding. Both of them are Jewish, so the ceremony was sorted. Rabbi S Bacher says traditionally Jewish weddings have to be filled with different rituals that show the beauty of the couple’s relationship. “As much as it’s the couple’s wedding, in Jewish culture rituals are mostly done to follow tradition and show respect to the Jewish culture and people present at the wedding,” he explains.

Days leading up to the big day Alan and Belinda have now been married for 15 years, but a week before they got married, they didn’t see each other. By this time they were called chatan (Hebrew for groom) and kallah (bride). “We stayed in different houses for a whole week before the wedding to respect the tradition. And at times when we had to meet during wedding preparations,

there was always someone present to ‘watch over’ us,” Alan says. Rabbi Bacher says keeping the groom and bride away from each other is to avoid negative spiritual energy (kelipah) that may enter between them before their celebrated union is joined. The night before the wedding the kallah has to immerse her in a mikvah. This is a ritual bath which is meant to bring purification to the bride. “It is meant for the bride to cleanse herself from past sexual activity so that she can be clean for her husband,” Belinda explains. The groom goes to the synagogue where he reads the Torah. He then has a small ceremony called aufruf – a Yiddish word which means ‘to call up’. “Because we know the Torah is the source of blessings, the groom is called up the day before his wedding to shower him with blessings for his upcoming union,” says Rabbi Bacher.

the big day After a week of not seeing each other, Alan finally saw his bride on their wedding day

as she walked towards the canopy they got married under. “We chose to go with the canopy, which we call chuppah in Jewish culture, because it is a symbol of our new home we are starting,” explains Belinda. The canopy is usually designed in a very minimalistic way with only a white cloth and flowers. The cloth is white to celebrate the purity of the union while the flowers symbolise the love between the couple. “When they stand under the chuppah, the chatan and kallah are not allowed to wear jewellery because they are showing that their commitment is based on love of who they are, not on any material possessions they may have,” Rabbi Bacher explains. Unlike most cultures where the bride is walked down the isle while the groom waits, in the traditional Jewish culture the groom walks ahead of the bride with his parents who will leave him to the left side of the canopy, while the bride follows with her parents and is left at the right of the canopy. Belinda laughs hysterically as she recalls how she was almost dizzy during their wedding ceremony as she had to circle Alan www.nubianbride.co.za |

heritage

seven times as a traditional Jewish ritual. “I swear I thought I would collapse in my crisp white gown.” Rabbi Bacher says the circling of the groom by the bride is her figuratively building walls to the new world she and her husband are creating. “Seven is a symbol of completeness and wholeness and doing that shows they have attained jointly that which they couldn’t attain separately,” adds Rabbi Bacher.

Wedding outfits and festivities “Our wedding was very traditional in many aspects. Belinda wore white like most brides and we had a three-course meal that is synonymous with Jewish weddings. We served the usual chicken and beef,” says Alan. Rabbi Bacher adds that in Jewish culture the men should always wear yarmulke or kippah, which is usually worn when people pray or when they study the Torah. But at weddings it's worn to symbolise the purity of the man and his desire to stay pure in his marriage. The only thing Alan and Belinda did differently was in choosing their own music. They added more current music than traditional Jewish music. “Normally, traditional Jewish music is played and the men and woman dance separately. The dancing is centred on the bride and groom, which is to accentuate the union between them,” reflects Belinda. Rabbi Bacher says one of the most important parts of a Jewish wedding is the breaking of a glass by the groom. “He cracks the glass with his foot to symbolise sadness at the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. This also identifies the couple with the nationality and spirituality of Jewish people.” The breaking of the glass ends the ceremony and opens the way for the wedding party and reception to begin. Ordinarily at Jewish celebrations or weddings, people dance the Hora – a dance where the couple is lifted in a chair by friends and family and they dance around with them. Alan and Belinda followed tradition. “We did the Hora and it was so much fun, seeing the joy and support of our family members was heartwarming,” recalls Belinda. What you should tell your make-up artist! The relationship between a bride and her make-up artist is an important one. You trust her to make you look beautiful, but for her to do her job there are a few important beauty facts that you need to share with her, says influential make-up artist and Avon expert Queen Motlale

Skin history

Why this is important: It is very important to do skin analysis weeks before the wedding day to get advice on the required skin care treatment for your big day.

The solution: I always advise brides with dry skin to take lots of water to hydrate the skin and use a homemade mask with honey, lemon and milk. Cream foundation is the best for dry skin. For acne-scarred skin I use concealer. There are different colour concealers for different reasons. For example, for red and pinks scars, I use green concealer and for brown scars I use yellow concealer.

The location of the wedding (indoors versus outdoors)

Why this is important: It is essential that the make-up you apply not only looks amazing, but has the desired effect when it comes to the photo shoot on your wedding 66

day. Different lighting will affect how your skin will look.

The solution: For an outdoors wedding, try to schedule photos in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set. That’s the kind of outdoor lighting that makes everyone looks their best. Use sheer, satin matte foundation and medium coverage concealer for trouble spots, and dust with pressed powder and powder blush. Apply at least two to three coats of mascara.

Wear make-up; don’t let make-up wear you

Your lipstick can be any colour, but choose sheer, cream lipstick, which will last for hours. Avoid lip-gloss so that your lips don’t appear too shiny or wet, especially if you’re going to have kissing photographs. If you’re going to be photographed indoors, camouflage your make-up with a neutral to yellow-toned foundation. Do not apply shimmer or products that give your skin extra shine, as these will cause you to look very light in the camera flash. Use concealer to camouflage under-eye darkness, spots and discolorations, especially around the nose.

The look you want – natural versus glam

Why this is important: Make-up goes with your personality, lifestyle and charac-

ter. I always advise my clients to express themselves and not shy away from it. Wear make-up; don’t let make-up wear you.

The solution: Natural bridal make-up is safe, so add a little bit of drama/glam makeup if you can. Vintage soft smoky, winged eyes with red lipstick will give you a sexy romantic bridal look, while super smoky eyes are a rare but fashion-forward choice for bridal makeup. Natural eyes, bronzed cheeks and coral lips are perfect for a summer wedding, and soft eyes with pink lips are always chic.

Queen’s top tip: Having make-up that suits your skin, your dress and your personality is vital to make you feel as comfortable as possible on your big day. For a Q & A with Queen Motlale on her career and vachievements visit www.nubianbride.co.za

etting the right look is definitely a team exercise and the most important person on the team, believe it or not, is you, the bride. To ensure you get the exact look you want from your make-up artist, it is important that you are honest and clear about your expectations and the condition of your skin. This means discussing some important beauty topics and also how each of them may impact your final look.

If you wear little make-up in your daily life, stick to the same routine for your wedding day. You should look like you, only enhanced. American actress Kerry Washington shows that less is more.

Look

Use lots of mascara. It’s important to apply on both the top and bottom. Applying mascara on the bottom lashes gives a more youthful look because it opens up the eyes. This mascara lengthens your lashes and gives them volume in a smooth finish. Sweep your eyeshadow across the entire eyelid in shades of brown and bronzes. The eyeshadow application is not concentrated, its soft and dusted on.

he make-up look is influenced by the international trend from MAC called Puri-Tan. Puri-Tan uses various shades to highlight the bone structure of the face. The colours used are all taken from your face’s natural skin tones. The look is all about simplicity and femininity, perfect for the bride who prefers not to wear a lot of make-up. The foundation of the look is clear, hydrated skin. Use a BB cream or tinted moisturiser, or for more coverage use a water or cream-based foundation. There is no need for blush as the cheeks are contoured using a darker shade under the cheekbones. Use either a concealer or a foundation in a darker colour to achieve this.

Lips Natural tones are again used on the lips. Shades of browns with red and purple undertones work best with darker skin tones. The lips shouldn’t look too shiny, so choose a lipstick with a natural finish.

Skin For a spring/summer wedding, you don’t want foundation that’s heavy. Go for BB cream or a tinted moisturiser. The skin should glow and look hydrated. Try Ponds BB Cream in Chocolate. For more coverage, Black Opal Liquid Foundation is oil free and available at various Edgars stores.

Martha Sbusiso

Give us a short description of the wedding day. The bride and bridesmaids all stayed at Lidgett’s Grant House on the Netherwood estate and started getting ready there, while the groom and groomsmen stayed at nearby cottages on the Netherwood estate and began their morning with some clay pigeon shooting. When the ceremony began the sky was still free from rain. The ceremony was perfect, personal, intimate, emotional, filled with God’s presence and the love of family and friends. Is there anything about your wedding day that you would change? Martha: It ended up being misty and a little wet on the day of our wedding, and having naturally curly, frizzy hair, I think I would have chosen to wear my hair completely up to avoid dealing with frizziness and having to attempt to put my hair up myself prior to the reception. Sbu: I would consider beginning the wedding earlier in the day. I felt the reception was a little rushed in order to accommodate all the speeches and dinner. What were the highlights of your wedding day? Martha: The ceremony. My favourite moments were walking down the aisle with my father, Sbu and I seeing each other for the first time, and reciting our personal vows to each other. Also our pastor Bruce, who officiated the ceremony, did such an amazing job. It was perfect. Sbu: The ceremony was also the highlight of the day for me. Seeing Martha for the first time walking down the aisle was special. We also were facing each other for the entire ceremony so it felt extremely intimate, like it was just the two of us in the moment. Another highlight was having all my family and friends there to celebrate the day with us. Where did you spend your honeymoon? Since we were returning to Canada to live shortly after the wedding and wanted to spend as much time with family and friends before leaving, we decided to just go away for a few nights for our honeymoon. We flew to Cape Town and stayed at the Arabella Hotel & Spa in Kleinmond, Hermanus. It was the perfect little getaway to relax and have some time to ourselves post-wedding. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Lillian Sam

How did the two of you meet? Lillian: Sam and I met in December 2006 at work. He was then the medical director of the South African National Blood Services, and I was the company’s training co-ordinator. We pretty much enjoyed each other’s company and started to spend time together. We enjoy nature together, he loves the outdoors and so do I. We love to go hunting, fishing and enjoy game drives a lot. We both love wild animals. Being with Sam has made me a better person. Sam: Having Lillian in my life has provided an opportunity for me to start enjoying life again. How did Sam propose? We had our traditional wedding in September 2009, and got engaged in the same year. The traditional umembeso ceremony was also done in the same year. Is there anything about your wedding day that you would change? We would not change anything if we did it again. Where did you spend your honeymoon? Victoria Falls, it was perfect. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Give us a short description of the wedding day. It was an intimate occasion, which is just how we wanted it. The Morrells team was amazing in the way they handled everything. We spent the evening at Morrells with a few friends and wrapped up the weekend with a lovely long champagne breakfast (which extended into lunch) with our friends. That was just the cherry on top. Is there anything about your wedding day that you would change? I would make sure that Guma and I got to have some of the canapĂŠs that were served while we were taking photos. Everyone was raving about them. I would also use a different stationer. We only got to sleep at 3am the night before the wedding, thanks to our stationery supplier having messed up the ceremony booklets. What were the highlights of your wedding day? The highlight for me was definitely the photo booth. It was so much fun seeing our family and friends enjoying trying on the different wigs and silly costumes. I also remember laughing a lot throughout the day. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Give us a short description of your wedding day. It was my fairytale wedding come true. I was very fortunate to have the dream team I had, consisting of my family and Wedding Emporium, who made sure I got the wedding I always envisioned. I wanted an outdoor wedding in a rose garden and we were fortunate to find Le Chatelat, a spectacular guest house with an amazing garden. The reception at the Forum was just fabulous and the table setting, flowers and lighting were right on point. The wedding was elegant and chic. Is there anything about your wedding day that you would change? I forgot to thank my sister in my speech for all the hard work she put in! I wasn’t the easiest bride. That broke my heart. Other than that I wouldn’t change a thing. What were the highlights of your wedding day? Walking down the aisle and seeing everyone’s expressions. Kissing my husband when they pronounced us husband and wife. Walking into the reception and seeing what the Wedding Emporium had put together. I was speechless.

Tips for getting married in this area • KwaZulu-Natal enjoys relatively warm winter weather. It has a warm subtropical climate, and summers are gorgeously hot and moist. • Rainy season: Summer • Extend the wedding celebrations by heading over to The Elephant Coast, well known for its sea life, including whales and turtles. • Some might prefer The Zulu Kingdom’s North Coast, also known as the Dolphin Coast. This is the playground of bottlenose dolphins that frolic in the waters close to shore, and they are visible all year round. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Tips for getting married in this area • Summer in the Eastern Cape starts in November. Summer temperatures range from 17 to 28 degrees Celsius. It seldom gets very hot in the region. In winter the temperatures range between 7 and 20 degrees Celsius. • Port Elizabeth and East London both get summer rain. The Garden Route shares a similar winter climate to Cape Town but has much less wind in summer and with rainfall throughout the year. • After the formal wedding fun, spread your wings with the Featherbed experience. Featherbed is a pristine piece of paradise situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is accessible by ferry only. • Newlyweds who are nature junkies might enjoy the exquisite forests of The Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail. This southern Cape hiking paradise journeys through lush indigenous afromontane forest and mountain fynbos.

HONEYMOONS

S

The luxury hotel on wheels is charismatic and majestic, providing a unique way of traversing some of southern Africa’s magnificent landscapes and landmarks

o you’ve tied the knot, and it was nothing short of what fairytales are made of. In fact, it was made of the very things that Shakespeare would’ve loved to pen. Now all that’s left is the honeymoon. If you’re looking to get to your destination in style (with plenty of leg room) look no further than The Blue Train. The luxury hotel on wheels is charismatic and majestic, providing a unique way of traversing some of southern Africa’s magnificent landscapes and landmarks. The train glides through an ever-changing landscape of 1,600 kilometres of South Africa’s varied and stunning vistas comprising open farmlands, rugged mountains, semi-arid desert, and dams dotted with pink flamingos. On board the train, you will indulge in fine cuisine accompanied by some of the best wines from around the world. Personal butlers are at your beck and call to tend to your every need for the duration of the trip, 24/7. Be it in the comfort of your private suite or at any one of the exquisite lounges, your wishes are their commands. The all-inclusive one night’s accommodation on the five-star train includes brunch, high tea, breakfast, dinner and all beverages, except for French Champagne. It’s a one-night travel experience, perfect for guests with a shorter itinerary. Much of the night time journey is through the Karoo, so there’s nothing to distract you but the star-filled African night sky. You can be assured of a good night’s rest due to the very gentle motion, achieved through The Blue Train’s advanced suspension system. Let’s not forget the en-suite bathrooms, elegantly decorated with Italian marble and gold-plated fittings. The facilities are remote controlled, including the blinds, air-conditioning and under-floor heating, and all suites are soundproof. The train travels on selected Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to both Johannesburg and Cape Town. Trips to Durban and the Kruger Park are also available. Stops include Zimbali Lodge if you are travelling to Durban, Bakung from Pretoria, and Matjiesfontien near Cape Town. The Blue Train offers far more than just a journey. It’s an incomparable experience that could rival even the most exotic of beach honeymoon destinations. So take a journey into a timeless world of grace, elegance and

LAST WORD

Good Advice Deciding on the venue determines so many other aspects of the wedding. It’s also one of the biggest expenses, so it’s important to get it right. We invited top three wedding venues to share expert advice on what to look for in a venue, what questions to ask and when to sign on the dotted line

How important is choosing the right venue to ensure a great wedding? Carl Visser: Choosing the right venue is

imperative to the success of your wedding day and the journey leading up to the day. Most venues book out six months plus in advance – so first select a venue and then a date. Better the right venue on the wrong day, than the wrong venue on the date of your choice.

Taryn Porteus: After choosing each other

as wedding partners, booking the perfect wedding venue is the most important decision that the bride and groom will make during the process of planning their special day. The venue determines the theme and adds both personality and atmosphere to the wedding.

Karen Nortjie: The venue needs to offer impeccable service and products as you and your guests would like to be treated as royalty. The venue should have the right image that you would like to set for your big day, as every bride has a very specific idea of what they want to create. Once the venue has been chosen, the rest will fall into place. What are some of the questions couples need to ask their venue of choice before they sign on the dotted line? Carl Visser: Ask for a printed copy of the Terms and Conditions and read through it thoroughly before signing – especially the payment terms, for example what happens

financially should you need to cancel?

Taryn Porteus: Availability and venue capacity. Popular wedding venues are booked at least a year in advance, especially in the summer months, so if a couple has a significant date that they are set on, it is important to check availability as soon as possible.

Carl Visser – Oakfields Farm, Hospitality consultant

Karen Nortjie: Does the venue have backups such as a back-up generator should the power fail and does it have a rain back-up in the event of an outdoor wedding?

What are the top three qualities that all good wedding venues share? Carl Visser

• Experience matters. Never forget that a wedding, however beautiful, if not managed well will be a disappointment. • A good pricing structure and exceptional value for money. • Good food and professional, friendly service.

Taryn Porteous – Thaba ya Batswana Eco Hotel and Spa, Sales and business development

Taryn Porteous

• Location and setting. • Tantalising food. • Professional service.

Karen Nortjie

• Great service from the moment you walk into the venue for the first time, all the way on to the wedding. • Top quality food. • Qualified and professional coordinators to guide you through the planning process.

Karen Nortjie – Avianto Wedding coordinator and sales manager
