EDITOR’S LETTER
W
elcome to our very first hair and beauty supplement, because we know there’s more to looking good than meets the eye! Woman to woman, it’s a lot of work trying to look your best everyday so we wanted to make it a little easier for you to achieve that ‘effortless’ glow. Because, let’s face it, the old adage ‘beauty is pain’, while true, understates the matter – beauty is also time consuming (all day hair appointments), expensive (hello spa treatments!) and sometimes embarrassing (Brazilian wax anyone?). But women all over the world want to look great all the time. Unfortunately, Murphy’s Law states that the one time you leave the house looking a little dishevelled or less than your best, is when you bump into that ex or your old high school rival. And all you really can do is just grin and bear it – smile like you’re a supermodel and you haven’t got a care in the world. Fake it till they believe it! You can be as skinny as Kate Moss or have Naomi Campbell’s wardrobe, but this doesn’t guarantee you happiness or success. So be happy with who you are and what you’ve got. There’s nothing wrong with making the most of your looks and wanting to look your best; we’re doing our best to help you achieve that goal with this supplement. We’ve got everything you need to help you be the best you can be! So if you’re looking for make-up or hair tips, we’ve brought in the professionals to show you the way. We’ve also scoured the beauty market to test out some interesting products that could be just what you’re looking for. There’s also sensible and straightforward diet and exercise advice – and we’re even giving away some boot camp vouchers to help you get your fitness regime started. But looking good goes hand in hand with feeling good – so remember: Put on a happy face, smile and just be content with yourself.

TOp TIp Always first measure the fake lashes against your lash line so that they’re the same size as your own. If they are too long, they will pull the shape of your eye down.
Setting the foundation Step 1: On a clean face, first apply a primer to even out the skin tone and moisturise. Next, use a strobe cream, as this gives an iridescent glow to the skin. You need two shades of foundation, one shade slightly lighter than your skin to be used around the eye area, and the other for the rest of your face. Apply

the lighter shade in a triangular shape from the outer corner to your nose, then apply the foundation in the right shade. Blend the lighter make-up around your eye into this. Apply loose setting powder, heavier under the eyes, as much as is needed. The rest will be absorbed.

Define the brow Step 2: I used a brow wax from Benefit to define the brows, as the wax sticks to the skin and hair. Next, an eyeshadow one shade lighter than her eyebrow was used to fill in the gaps and provide a cleaner look.
under the arch of the brow and on the corner of the eye.
Line the way Step 5: Always use a waterproof brand of eyeliner. Here I applied it on the inside on the top of the lid, under the lashes right in the lash line. On the bottom lid, stick to the natural lines for a more defined shape without it looking too heavy. Line as close as possible to the natural contours of the eye. Don’t forget you’re aiming for a very thin line, if you make a mistake, wipe it off and try again.
Lengthen your lashes Step 3: First, use an eyelash curler to add length to natural lashes. Next, apply mascara to the roots going out, from the bottom to the top.
Shadow the eye Step 4: Copper and gold tones work brilliantly on dark skin. First apply a darker bronze on the eye socket and under the eye. On the lid, mainly on the ball of the eye, use a lighter and more pigmented copper, so you get more shine and when you blink there’s a pretty pop of colour. Go with the natural contour of the eye. Lastly, use a crisp gold highlighter
Fake it till you make it Step 6: Apply the glue, then add the lashes, starting at the inside corner and end where your lashes end. Always go as close to your own lashes as possible.

Bronze beauty Step 7: Start by contouring with a matte bronzer first, to create a shadow under the cheekbone. Take this contouring into the hairline and slightly on the temple and forehead – wherever you would get tanned by the sun. Next, apply a bronze blusher on the apples of the cheek, going into the cheekbone. Blend it with the matte bronzer.
length of the nose and top of the lip to give the face a glowing highlight. After your blush and contouring, you can clean up the lighter powder under the eye by simply dusting it off very gently.
Pucker up and you’re good to go Step 9: I used a lipliner in a slightly darker colour than her own lips, simply to emphasise the shape of her lips. A lipstick in a similar hue was used to add colour. Add gloss for shine.
Blush clean Step 8: Add a coat of slight pink or peach blush to the apples for a rosy finish. Lastly, add an iridescent powder to the cheekbone,

working in sections.
Pucker up and you’re good to go Step 3: When you are finished and the hair is cool, remove the pins to loosen the curl. Using a soft natural brush, lightly brush out the curl without pulling it.

MAKE-UP Step 1: Smoky eyes don’t have to be limited to one colour or shades of grey or black. I went with a bold purple shade with a complementary green for the ultimate look-at-me effect. I used the purple eye shadow on the inside of the main lid, closer to the lashes, working from the middle of the lid and fanning out towards the crease. Step 2: Don’t forget to put a little bit of pressed powder lightly under the eye, as this will catch any stray eyeshadow. Use a powder with a bit of shimmer, so when you lightly blend it in at the end, it adds some dimension.
Step 3: Layer your colours for that ‘wow’ effect. Just above the purple shade, I used the green on the top bit of the eye. I chose to blend the colours just a little where they join, so it looks more natural, but you can make them more defined – depending on the look you’re going for.
Step 4: Just below the eyebrow, I used a much lighter, pinkish shade as a highlighter colour. This draws attention to the shape of the brows and adds a little sparkle. I used a brown pencil to emphasise the eyebrow and neaten unruly hair.
Ready, set, smouldeR… Just like a little black dress or a man in a tuxedo, smoky eyes are a classic and sexy look. Hazel Mzolo from Avon shows you how to get smouldering eyes in six easy steps
Step 5: You can create more of that smoky feel by touching up with a little bit of brown eyeshadow. This gives the eye a little bit more of a pop, so that the brighter, more vibrant colours stand out. I used the brown on the end of the eye to blend the colours in.
T
he basic layers of moisturiser, primer, concealer and foundation should be done first. Applying the primer or a concealer will help the make-up stay on longer and appear bolder and more vibrant. Then, sweep on a flesh-coloured shadow or powder to help it set. The trick to remember when lining your eyes is to use a thin gel pencil if your hands aren’t steady enough to use a liquid liner. Using the pencil, trace your lash line. Always work from the inside and get thicker towards the end. You can also choose to give it a slight flick for a sleek cat-eye look.
Step 6: Now that the look is complete, very gently blend the pressed powder under the lids into the rest of the makeup. Use little sweeping motions and just tidy it up where necessary. This powder should not be visible and is very easily camouflaged. If you’ve put on too much, you can add a little dab of foundation on a brush or sponge to make it look more natural. Add a bit of lip gloss and you’re good to go!

Get your Glow on… If there’s one day that you should be rocking that radiant golden glow, it’s your wedding day! Hazel Mzolo from Avon shows us how to achieve that sun-kissed gorgeous look…
1 Darker skinned people tend to shy away from bronzer, concerned it will make them looker darker – but that shouldn’t be a worry! Bronzer should be a make-up staple as it enhances your skin tone and provides a radiant, lit-from-within look. How to apply bronzer: We used the Avon Bronzing Pearls, which provides a good range of colour. Using a good high quality bronzing brush or a blush brush if you don’t have that, sweep the bronzer over your cheekbones. Add an extra dimension to your look by swiping the bronzer down the bridge of the nose, contouring it to your natural shape. Also
3 11
2 brush it along the outer perimeter of your face, going into the hairline so it looks blended and natural. Finish off your golden glow by adding just a little bit of blush. Here the trick is to give a natural smile, so you can find the apples of your cheeks. Once you identify the apples, swipe a peachy-pink shade onto the cheeks. You can also apply bronzer to your cleavage and arms for more of that radiant effect. How to choose a bronzer: Choose a colour that’s one or two shades darker than your skin tone, and no more. Go for products that are sheer not matte, as matte can make your skin look dirty.

Nimue Melanofade Mask: This active sleep mask from Nimue is targeted to help hyper-pigmented skin – it promises to brighten, moisturise and inhibit future pigment production. The result is an even-toned skin with reduced inflammation. This mask should be worn overnight, between one and three times a week, depending on the severity of the pigmentation/discolouration. The results are fantastic. I loved the fact that you can see the improvement almost immediately. It is really moisturising, and leaves your skin silky soft.
Tangle Teezer Aqua Splash’s latest innovation is an upright, non-slip, detangling hairbrush which I loved! The hard plastic feels durable and the bright pink makes it stand out. It’s also well thought out for shower use as the hollow design makes for easy, lightweight handling and the water drains off quickly. It doesn’t pull at your hair or leave split ends. It doesn’t feel like it damages the hair as the bristles are hard enough to tackle any knots while also providing a gentle head massage at the same time. Paula’s Choice, Resist Daily Pore Refining Treatment 2% BHA Exfoliant: This pore refining treatment claims to unclog and refine pores, reduce the signs of ageing and smooth the skin’s texture. I’ve only recently gotten acquainted with the Paula’s Choice brand and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s very light, almost water-like, so it’s easily absorbed and you can wear it under your moisturiser. My skin felt smoother, it evened out my complexion, and it gave me a happy glow. Even better is the fact that it helped calm down redness and would-be breakouts.
Ordinary Skincare Moisturising Balm: This product is for dry or hypersensitive skin – it gives an intense moisturising effect that is long lasting. My first impression was that the balm would be greasy as it has a Vaselinetype consistency – I was really surprised that the balm absorbs beautifully into the skin, leaving it soft and moist all day long. What amazed me even more was that you can easily apply make-up over the balm. I definitely recommend this product (the Eye Gel is also worth a mention; it is light and moisturising) as my skin looks and feels fantastic. An extraordinary product.

Caivil Racy Wine Hair Dye: When I was a kid, Caivil was always my mother’s first choice when choosing a hair product for me. She claimed it was suitable for a young girl as it did not damage the hair or burn the scalp. Of course I didn’t know much about it then, but now that I have tried its Racy Wine Hair Dye, I know what she meant. Unlike regular hair products, this hair dye has none of the strong hair scent and is not harsh on the scalp. It also comes with a shampoo and conditioner that reminds me of summer.
Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective EyeOpening Serum is a ‘super smart’ five-in-one anti-ageing solution that’s supposed to visibly smooth, lift, firm and restore youthful shape to eyes. I loved the smooth feeling of the serum as well as the fresh, natural smell. Upon first application I could feel the serum tightening on my skin, and the sensation was a pleasant one. I’ve noticed that my skin feels more supple and the creases around my eyes seem to have faded too. I’ll most certainly continue to use it!
Caivil Oil Moisturiser Spray promises to help dry, brittle and damaged hair. It keeps the scalp moisturised and shiny and protects it from breakage. I really enjoyed using this product. My hair is rather brittle, but often when I use products they tend to be too greasy. However, Caivil Moisturiser Spray left my hair soft, manageable and shiny with no greasiness in sight. It also has a lovely scent that lasts.
Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain offers a luxurious pop of lip colour that does wonders for any look. What better way to celebrate the start of summer than with a splash of bright lip colour? It really is a face and outfit game-changer. I love the non-sticky, non-drying feel of the product. While I end up wiping off most glosses because my hair gets stuck to my lips, this one is creamy and moisturising. It felt like my lips were nourished, and I receive compliments about the colour whenever I wear it.
Caivil Fusion Oil repairs traumatised hair. It reverses the effects of damage caused by harsh chemical treatments. It’s also excellent for hair growth and works wonders on receding hairlines. I’ve found that the product has really helped with my hairline and I can see the regrowth. The easy-to-apply spray worked wonderfully and the product mixed easily into my hair. My hair and scalp is much more hydrated and my hair is sleek and shiny. It smells great.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks are clinically proven eye masks formulated to instantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I love face masks, especially ones that target specific areas. You simply tear open the individual sachet (there are six in a box), peel off the plastic backing and apply the masks under the eyes, sticky side down. You can relax for 20 minutes, or continue to go about your day as they stay in place and don’t slip. My under-eye area was perfectly smooth, really plump, hydrated and bright. I couldn’t have asked for more.

BEAUTY
Bridal Beauty essentials Every bride wants to look absolutely beautiful on her wedding day, but many women fall into the trap of following misguided, outdated or just plain bad skin-care and make-up advice. Use these simple, tried-and-tested beauty tips and all you’ll have to do is smile when the cameras start flashing! By Paula Begoun of Paula’s Choice
H
need right before your wedding day or special occasion is a blotchy reaction from a treatment gone wrong! Pamper yourself with a massage or pedicure instead, and book all other skinrelated appointments several weeks in advance of your big day – especially any procedures you’ll be trying for the first time.
ere are three top tips from make-up and beauty expert Paula Begoun about how best to handle your pre-wedding skin routine: • Practise smart skin-care well in advance of your event. Don’t experiment with new products a few days (or even a few weeks) before the event, or you will risk having a reaction to them. Start good skin care as early as possible and you’ll enjoy the benefit later on. • Find and test out a well-formulated salicylic acid (BHA) exfoliant in case of any last-minute blemishes that might pop up. But make sure to test it out in advance to avoid any surprises. The antibacterial and anti-redness properties of salicylic acid can rescue your face overnight! In a pinch, an over-the-counter 1 percent hydro-cortisone cream can help, too. • Steer clear of facials and dermatological treatments shortly before the event. It can be tempting to splurge on an exotic facial treatment or chemical peel right before the big day; however, a day (or even a week) before the big event is not the time to experiment! You never know how your skin may react (even if you’ve had the service done in the past), and the last thing you
Bridal make-up done right
• Book appointments with at least two different make-up artists to see what kind of look you are most comfortable with. If you are hiring a professional make-up artist for the big event, get your make-up done in advance to be sure you end up looking the way you want. Any reputable make-up artist will offer this service as a test-run before the event. • Find your perfect foundation. Special occasion or not, foundation is essential to a complete, formal make-up application. Your foundation should match your skin exactly, with no obvious lines at your jaw or hairline. Few things are worse than looking back on photos and realising your face and neck are two different colours. In general, liquid foundations with a soft matte or subtle satin finish work best because they

are most flattering and beautifully mimic a healthy skin tone.
• Be a blushing bride. Don’t underestimate the power of a

beautiful blush, especially for indoor photos. Powder blushes with a matte or really subtle shimmer finish are best for photographs and hold up well during long days. Apply more than you normally would for everyday make-up. • Experiment with colours ahead of time, but our tip for medium to dark skin tones would be to stick to the rosy-plum tones. • Emphasise your eyes. Keep eyeshadow tones muted and matte so that they emphasise, not compete with, your natural eye colour. You can’t go wrong with colours that have a brown, tan, taupe or neutral beige base. Think earth tones (slate, shell pink, bronze) and ‘food’ tones (cream, caramel and coffee). • If you want to add a touch of shimmer to your eye make-up, find the sheerest product possible, use a brush and apply sparingly to highlight your brow bone or the inner corners of your eyes. Make sure you like how the shine looks in photos before the big day arrives. Beware: Flash photography always magnifies shiny make-up! • Liven up your lashes. Long, luscious lashes can make a woman feel sexy and confident, so make sure your mascara can go the distance. Opt for waterproof mascara if you know the tears will be flowing. Fake lashes are fabulous for adding that extra special touch, but be sure to experiment with these ahead of time so you’re sure you like the result. Lash extensions require a trip to a salon that offers this service. • Easy access to your make-up is a must! Between tears, kisses, eating and burning up the dance floor, your make-up is bound to need a touch-up. Find a cute clutch bag to stash your basics or have a trusted bridesmaid or friend keep them in her purse. At the very least you should have quick access to your lipstick or gloss, pressed powder and a small, retractable powder brush.
Get ready for your close-up!
Outdoor photo tips Getting married outdoors during daylight hours? Less make-up is preferred for outdoor weddings so follow these tips: • For the most flattering lighting during outdoor photography, try to schedule photos in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set. Often referred to by photographers as “the magic hour”, this is the kind of outdoor lighting that makes almost anyone look their best. • Eye make-up can include soft eyeshadow colours that are matte or barely shiny, and eyeliner that is medium to dark brown or slate grey rather than black, which can look too harsh in daylight. Too much shine can make your skin look sweaty and greasy in photographs, not the glowing luminous look you were going for. • Apply at least two or three coats of a lengthening mascara that leaves lashes softly fringed. • Keep lip gloss to a minimum because a heavy gloss can make your lips look unnatural. TURN HEADS WITH A CLASSY, SLEEK BOB
How to get the look The most important part of achieving a slick bob is to get a professional hairstylist to cut your hair correctly. Without the correct cut, the style cannot be achieved. To get this alluring do, you have to start with relaxing your hair, which you can do either at home or at a salon. The hair can be cut once it is relaxed. Make sure your hair is kept well moisturised as this will keep it healthy, prevent breakage and make it look shiny. This can be done
by either using a hair food or a hair moisturiser – we suggest Caivil Oil Moisturiser. Once your hair is moisturised, you can simply comb it into the style shown here. If you want to keep the sleek, sexy look, try using a light holding spray to ensure your hair stays in place. This style looks great, is easy to achieve and heavy on glamour – the trick is combing the hair perfectly straight.

hair necessity is Hair Gro Essence, with a mix of coconut oil, neem oil and tea tree oil – it does wonders for promoting hair growth and a healthy scalp. How to get the look The first step to achieving this sassy look is to relax your hair, which you can do before you leave home. For styling, all you need to do is a little bit of light curling, then pin it up at the back and spritz with a holding spray.
You shouldn’t have to worry about styling your hair while you’re on honeymoon. Opt for a shorter but sexier do that’s low maintenance but looks effortlessly gorgeous. If you’re keeping it short, you still have to concentrate on keeping it shiny, beautiful and healthy. Relaxing, weaves, extensions and heat styling can take a heavy toll on your locks. So you should show it plenty of love by using healthy oils, moisturising creams and root nourishers. Another

HAIR TODAY, GONE
TOMORROW
If there’s one thing that black women the world over are precious about, it’s their hair. This is a multimillion rand industry – movies, documentaries have been made about it and many books written on the subject
by damage to the hair’s cortex. This type of damage causes the hair to become fragile and break easily. Heat styling, over-processing and using harsh products can cause damage to the cortex. Try to let your hair have a rest from over-styling, be gentle and show your hair love! Use gentle shampoo on chemically treated hair. Dryness is caused by sebum being stripped from the hair shaft. Black hair is dry naturally and must be moisturised regularly. Try using water-based moisturisers and coconut oil (which is also an old Indian hair remedy) as these can penetrate the hair shaft. Other oil products simply coat the hair, giving it a look of moisture. Shedding is a normal process. When more than 80 hairs per day are shed, it may be excessive. This type of shedding can be caused by stress, hormonal changes, diet or scalp conditions. Many women experience this type of shedding after giving birth. Minimise hair thinning by first finding out what the cause of the shedding is. Use garlic on the scalp to tighten the pores and prevent the hair from shedding. Simply blend garlic with your favourite conditioner until it is a paste. Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair and cover with a plastic cap. Leave in for an hour before washing. Slow growth is a common complaint associated with black hair. This can be caused by the natural growth rate, breakage or nutrition. Source www.hairfinity.com TIP You might be able to speed up hair growth by using a hair vitamin formulated to increase hair growth. You can also try eating more eggs, salmon, nuts and whole grains.

lack hair is bold and beautiful but unfortunately it’s naturally dry and prone to breakage. Most black women have an intense love-hate relationship with their hair – with problems like breakage, hair loss or hair that refuses to grow being top of their lists of hair woes. We offer you some useful tips on how you can keep your hair looking as gorgeous and healthy as possible. Most people have about 100,000 hairs on their head. Normal growth is about 6 to 12mm per month. Actually, hair that grows 12 mm per month is considered fast growing. Black hair normally grows slower than this. Every hair on your head will go through three phases: growing, resting and shedding. The growing phase can last from three to seven years. The resting phase lasts about two to four weeks. The shedding phase can last from three to four months. This shedding is the natural process that replaces old hairs with new. It is normal to lose about 50 to 80 hairs per day. So if you’ve felt like your hair will only grow so much and then stop, you’re not crazy – this is because the growing (or anagen) phase is only a certain length of time. This is something that we are born with, so there isn’t much that changes it. The anagen phase also determines the maximum length your hair will grow to. Breakage is caused

top tips for weight loss The truth is there are no easy ways or fancy gimmicks to effectively lose weight – rather, you have to make different lifestyle choices. Here are our top five tips for losing weight – and keeping it off

sauces. Remember, the more fruit and veggies you eat, the less space you have for sweets. Food for thought: When cutting back on calories, consider taking a daily multivitamin. Lack of vitamins and iron may leave you tired and inclined to reach for some chocolate.
Move away from the fizzy drinks, and put down that diet drink too! Drink water instead, as it helps the body get rid of toxins and the constant sipping prevents you from over-snacking. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Your waist and skin will thank you for it. Food for thought: Make some infused water – it looks and tastes great. Add some lemons, limes or strawberries, cucumber strips or some mint to water in a clear bottle, jug or large jar. Add some ice cubes to make it even more appealing and you’ll be gulping it down.

Losing weight really has become high-tech. Get motivated by downloading an app that helps count calories and lets you know just how much you’re putting away at each meal. Diet and fitness tracker apps, like Spark People and My Fitness Pal, are easy to use and, best of all, free! My Fitness Pal already has certain South African outlets and fast food chains on record, so all the information you need is already there. Food for thought: Research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that keeping a ‘food diary’ can double your weight loss efforts.
Slim down servings
Big portion sizes are one of the main culprits of weight gain. Eat four or five meals a day with smaller portions. If that’s too much work, dish up smaller portions instead and make sure to chew slowly so you can savour and really taste your food. Then, if you’re still hungry, go back for more. Food for thought: Consider eating from a smaller plate as you’ll dish up less, but the portions will seem bigger. Before you start eating, drink a big glass of water as this will make you feel fuller sooner.

Get moving
Once you get started, you’ll see it is really not that bad. Pick a time that’s right for you; if you’re really not a morning person, rather opt for working out during lunch or after work instead. And don’t limit yourself; if gym isn’t your thing, consider doing a Zumba or Pilates class instead. There are plenty of options out there – you just have to find one that’s right for you. Food for thought: Aim to work out at least three times a week for 45 minutes; as your body adapts to this, you can add another day or two.

Simply like our Nubian Bride page on Facebook, share it with your friends and tell us just one of the exercises you can do at boot camp. Genevieve van der Vyver, boot camp trainer, offers some advice on how to get into fabulous shape for your wedding. 1. Exercise at least 3-4 times per week in the lead up to your big day to ensure that you are coping with the additional demands made on your time and patience. Throw in an extra two or three cardio sessions for good measure and the increased strength and fitness will mean increased stamina on your big day. 2. Work with increased resistance, i.e. weights, to help firm and slim your body, and it won’t add bulk! Lift heavy weights to be svelte and sexy and burn more calories overall. 3. Don’t stress about your thighs when he goes in for that garter moment. Instead, ensure your thighs are ready for the closeup attention by doing walking lunges across the garden at least twice a week. Sumo squats are also excellent for firming up and getting those obliques to pop. 4. Don’t forget to include some calf raises if you’re going to be wearing sexy high heels on the big day. Not only will your calves look better, but it will also help your feet cope with the demands of being in heels the whole day. 5. Don’t forget to firm those abs and arms with functional training that includes plank stabilisations, push-ups and crunches. Learn to connect with your core so that keeping your tummy pulled in won’t be a chore. Roll those shoulders back, lengthen your spine, tilt your chin up slightly and enjoy the adoration. 6. If you’re still not completely happy with your weight loss by the time the big day rolls around, fake it by posing with your hand on your hip and your elbow pointed out. Also try having your photos taken with your knee tucked across the other leg at a slight angle – for an even more toned and fabulous look.
