The most visited country in the world because of its scenic beauty and romantic offerings, France has been inspiration for numerous artists and writers over the years, such as Picasso, Cézanne and Ernest Hemingway. This beautiful country boasts numerous historic treasures, postcard-pretty scenery and a wealth of culture. Take a look...

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW 1. Provence, in the south-east, is one of France’s most seductive locations, famous for its scenic beauty. 2. The French Riviera, or Côte d’Azur, has been a popular jet set haven since the 1960s. 3. Paris is home to iconic fashion design houses such as Chanel, Dior and Saint Laurent. 4. The charming university city of Aix-en-Provence is the ideal base from which to explore Provence. 5. Flying time from Johannesburg to Paris is 10 hours 50 minutes.

AT A GLANCE THE RITZ HOTEL

LANGUAGE French and English

One of the city’s most famous and luxurious establishments reopened its doors last year after an extensive four-year renovation that cost over $200 million. The hotel, located on Place Vendôme, was originally a private 18th century palace. Once home to Coco Chanel and a favourite of Ernest Hemingway, it now offers fewer rooms than previously, as some were enlarged to make way for three new suites. Although it has been meticulously restored, it also offers every modern convenience. New additions include an underground ballroom, a 21,500-square foot garden, and the Salon Proust, where guests enjoy the hotel’s famous afternoon tea. The renowned Bar Hemingway, named after the author, has also been renovated. Another addition, in honour of Coco Chanel, who lived at the Ritz for over 30 years and whose suite is also available to stay in, is the world’s first Chanel Spa, Chanel au Ritz Paris. It offers seven treatment rooms and a selection of customisable Chanel beauty treatments. www.ritzparis.com

Day 1

Settle into your hotel, then take a leisurely stroll along the famous Champs-Élysées. Stop off at the renowned restaurant L’Avenue for breakfast or brunch then continue till you get to Avenue Montaigne, famous for its stunning designer fashion stores. The fabulous Arc de Triomphe is nearby, and from here you can take the Louis Vuitton bus to the city’s newest art museum, the fabulous Fondation Louis Vuitton in the pretty park, the Bois de Boulogne. Give yourself time to explore this museum, home to exquisite works of contemporary art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Housed in a stunning Frank Gehry designed building, it also features a great gift shop and excellent restaurant. Enjoy a romantic gourmet lunch at the iconic Le Jules Verne Restaurant, located at the top of the Eiffel Tower. The restaurant, which boasts two Michelin stars, has its own private elevator, which means you won’t have to queue to get to the top of the tower to enjoy a panoramic city view. This way, you can enjoy the view while savouring sublime dishes. Make sure to

request a window seat when you book. Take an afternoon walk back to your hotel to freshen up. Then head for the historic Plaza Athénée Hotel for pre-dinner drinks at one of Paris’s trendiest spots, the hotel bar. Take a taxi or stroll to the Palais de Tokyo, home to the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (the city’s Museum of Modern Art) and a very popular restaurant, Monsieur Bleu, where you can enjoy dinner. The museum will be closed in the evening, but you can visit it tomorrow if you wish.

Day 2

This morning, head for Avenue Montaigne to grab a coffee and a croissant at one of its many sidewalk cafes. Then explore the bohemian Le Marais district with its many famous vintage and antique stores and quirky fashion boutiques. For something romantic and sophisticated, head for the restaurant, Frenchie, which is run by Parisian chef Gregory Marchand. He has worked all over the world, including at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant, Fifteen, in London. His restaurant offers a superb five-course a la carte menu. You can’t visit Paris without exploring some of the city’s magnificent museums, so take some time this afternoon to explore a few. If you’re only in Paris with 48 hours to spare,

GETTING AROUND The Paris Metro and buses are controlled by RATP; this public transport network is split into several different fare zones. You can use a single ticket to travel on any of these transport systems within a particular zone. The Metro operates a network of 14 lines, so this is the ideal way to get around central Paris.

David suggests the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay and his favourite, Palais de Tokyo, where you had dinner last night. For your final meal in Paris, head for the unique, avantgarde restaurant, Le Derrière, which resembles a French apartment. Diners can choose to eat its wholesome French fare either in the apartment’s lounge, dining room, bedroom or boudoir. It’s truly a unique experience.

Jamaica W

e decided to make our honeymoon very adventurous, so our week was packed full of activities like snorkelling, trekking up Dunn River Falls, swimming with dolphins, floating down a river on rubber dinghies sipping cocktails – it was amazing!

We stayed in Ocho Rios, a big town where internationally renowned Jamaican reggae singer/songwriter, musician and guitarist Bob Marley lived

Highlights included visiting Bob Marley’s house, 9 Mile, on a tour and seeing the room where he used to write his songs. One of his sons still lives there – we actually met him! Jamaica itself was awesome: the people are the friendliest I have ever met. We also loved the food – it was so different from anything we’d ever eaten before. Jerk chicken, beef patties and lots of unusual spices.

Staying in a water villa was another highlight. I would go back there in a heartbeat.
