hey say that a team is only as strong as its weakest link, and Nubian Bride can honestly boast one of the strongest teams imaginable. Working together to create this magnificent magazine has been a joyful effort for all involved, and we have put our hearts and souls into creating what you are holding in your hands. Of course, it helps to have a winning formula, and the team we have put together this year has proven their mettle. Photographer Tim Hulme creates magic with his lens (take a look at the magical fashion and gowns pictures, as well as this issue’s exquisite cover). The talented team assisting (we’re talking stylist Chantelle Miranda, make-up artists Queen from House of Queen and Jenna Ungar, and Thomas and Emme from FR!KA Hair) were responsible for coming up with some of the most amazing fashion, beauty, hair and gowns images we have ever seen. It is no wonder that we’ve chosen to change the magazine’s tagline from ‘Celebrating African Bridal Beauty’ to ‘The Quintessence of Bridal Vogue’. Because the quality of

Lawn games
Piñata wedding cake
Wedding planners are always looking for new ways to entertain guests while they wait for the wedding to start or the couple to get the legalities over after they’ve tied the knot. Lawn games have become popular pastimes to keep your friends and family happy while proceedings get underway. Most popular sports include croquet, life-size Jenga, boules or come up with your own ideas.
Originating in Mexico, a piñata is a container that is filled with sweets or small items, and then broken as part of a celebration. A big trend right now is the piñata wedding cake – beautiful artistic creations. Filled with sweet concoctions (we’re thinking Lindt balls), they make a most unusual choice for a cake. These can be as unique, colourful and ornate as you wish.

WEDDING ETIQUETTE
The Gift Registry We asked wedding expert Aleit Swanepoel for advice on choosing a wedding registry so that gift-giving remains a pleasure on both sides What are the latest trends regarding wedding registries? These days, couples tend to tie the knot at a more mature age. As a result, they have often accumulated most of the traditional wedding registry household items – what was typically considered collectibles for a trousseau. Thus, they prefer to ask their friends for monetary contributions, perhaps for their honeymoon fund or towards a combined purchase of a larger item. How do registries work? Traditionally, the bridal couple chooses their top three home stores and selects items from each store that they would like as gifts for their home. The store keeps a record of these items, which wedding guests can access at any time and purchase. Registries were designed for couples to be able to create a more personalised approach for their guests to buy a gift and also to prevent repeat gifts. What sort of gifts should be included on the registry? Firstly, consider that not everyone can afford that R1,000 towel set you’ve coveted for months. Ensure that you have a variety of gifts at different prices.
24
| www.nubianbride.co.za
Online registries or a registery at a store? There are pros and cons for each, but I feel that sometimes online websites are not always up to date with the latest merchandise available; so a trip to the store might be worth your while.
accommodation in some cases), sometimes the simpler the gift, the better. Can you change the registry, and add/ subtract items? Yes, the registry can be edited and changed at any stage. If you set up the registry well in advance, it might be worth your while to make a second trip to the store to see if any new stock has arrived that you would like to add. How often should you check on your registry? We feel you shouldn’t be checking your registry – keep it a surprise!
When should you advise guests of the gift registry? And how? We recommend that our couples mention the gift registry on their invitation, which normally goes out four months before the wedding date. This allows enough time for guests to get to the store and make a purchase. Which of you decides on the gift? Since the gifts pertain to you as a couple and to your new home, they should be items that you both like. Should all the items be a similar price? Or should you include items of different prices? I suggest you choose a good mix of practical and spoils. One cannot always afford the luxuries in life and this might be an opportunity for a group of guests to club together and buy you the ultimate wedding gift. However, given the financial outlay some guests already have to spend to attend your wedding (for instance, flights and

Fiesta!
Drawing inspiration from the stunning looks in the Fashion Shoot in this issue, The Aleit Group created four inspiring wedding themes. The first is inspired by the rich, bold hues of Spanish architecture and Latin traditions
PLANNING
W
e drew our inspiration from Spain's vibrant colours and designs. This offers the perfect theme for any hot blooded bridal couple.
Venue Look for Latin American significance such as a church, hacienda, Spanish monastery or garden to create an overall Latin theme.
Stationery Play around with colour and texture; include patterns, bold colours, laser cuts and gold foil.
Table dĂŠcor & flowers Rich blue, deep red and lavish gold with touches of black create drama. Place at different heights so they cascade over the tabletops. We used bougainvillea, which has lovely deep, rich palettes of red and purple. Golden cutlery adds a touch of opulence; couple it with cut crystal glassware in the themed colour.
Menu & drinks Get creative with Latin-inspired drinks. We suggest serving heritage refreshments such as sangria, mojitos, Corona and tequila. Ola! Hire a caterer who specialises in Latin food. Appetisers such as tapas are always a favourite. A good choice is colourful, traditional paella.
The ceremony Consider including a Latin tradition, for example, in Mexico and Guatemala, there is a tradition called el ate de nudo, where a rope is placed around the couple.

’50s Rock There is so much to love about the ’50s… Rock ‘n Roll was born, swingy skirts were in fashion, Audrey Hepburn was Hollywood glam and jukeboxes were the life of the party! Use these themes to make your wedding fun, exciting, quirky and positive
PLANNING
T
here is so much to love about the ‘50s; this is exactly what a themed wedding should be: fun, exciting, quirky and positive. Make sure your theme is authentic; when planning a vintage wedding, it is imperative to make the details as era-perfect as possible. Today we have access to quite literally thousands of images to inspire us.
Invites A fun way to introduce the theme is by starting with the invitations. Design bespoke invites that immediately hint at the idea of the vintage-inspired theme. Request (but don’t insist) that guests dress in ‘50s attire as this will absolutely get them into the spirit of things, not to mention make your wedding photos fun!
Photos We can’t stress enough the importance of good props. Think of all the little details. After all, you have booked the photographer of your choice, so make the most of it! This is also a great excuse to drag your fiancé and bridesmaids along for a fun day out looking for props!
Food Opt for a playful menu incorporating popcorn, mini-hamburgers, corn dogs and pizzas, milkshakes, candy floss and a cupcake station.
Entertainment We don’t recommend that the music be exclusively ‘50s-inspired, but it should play a big part in the day. Opt for a nonstop ‘50s soundtrack as background music and perhaps even have a vintage gramophone for guests to play with later on. For the evening, you could hire a live band that specialises in ‘50s and ‘60s music, but at the end don’t be afraid to mix it up – it is a celebration after all!

Edge
Afro-punk is an eclectic mix of colours, patterns and cultures fused to create a unique look. Fun and exciting, it’s an extremely audacious and completely unexpected wedding theme
PLANNING
U
se this edgy theme if you’re a bold, very creative bridal couple who take inspiration from being on the edge. You’ll find inspiration from all over Africa; then add a bit of punk to make it your own.
Venue Afro-punk has a certain funky edge, so the venue must have the same X factor. A city venue will capture its boldness with the bustling city lights as a backdrop. Or choose an abandoned warehouse with raw brick walls and concrete floors as an unspoiled canvas to mix and match to your eclectic heart’s content.
Menu A modern twist on traditional African cuisine: rich flavours presented in delicious bite sizes served on beautiful wooden platters and slates. Try food stations that encourage socialising rather than a formal sit-down dinner. Use alternative desserts such as a delicious shooter topped with a sweet snack.
Décor Think an assortment of patterns, textures and cultures culminating in an eclectic backdrop. We used modern, sophisticated furniture to counterbalance the rugged street style. Make use of various materials such as wood, copper, rope, concrete and plastic to create a multidimensional atmosphere.
Stationery For invites, use unusual shapes and materials. Bring in wooden elements and engrave onto the wooden slab or make use of laser cutting. Instead of printing a menu on paper, place vinyl cut-outs onto food station booths or print the menu on textiles and hang from the ceiling to create layers.

Couture
Couture is high fashion; it’s everything that is bespoke, hand-crafted, stylish and glam. Keep this in mind when choosing couture as your theme, and you can’t go wrong
PLANNING
T
his theme inspires a creative bent with tons of simplicity... white on white with oodles of style. Think big, think bold, beautiful.
Venue Look for bold simplicity – an empty shell, a conservatory with its bare frame structure and glass paneling all around, or a white studio with exposed ceiling beams.
Décor Think refined and only the best. Floral details include delphinium orchids, white lilies and the finest chrysanthemums in crystal vases. White candles reflecting off the glass create a warm, intimate atmosphere. Cutlery is simple, paired with bohemian crystal glassware.
Menu A menu inspired by French cuisine; delicate bites that you’ve already consumed with your eyes before you’ve taken a bite. The haute couture of food pairings: blue cheese and pear; duck and orange; figs and bacon.
Stationery Create a monogram that can be used across all stationery. This will be the golden thread that creates a continuous look.
Cake Create a dramatic effect by making the wedding cake a feature, such as a seven-tier cake. Not all tiers need to be cake.

Discover the true meaning of ‘beauty’ – a realisation that will compel you to return to Mauritius time and time again... Mauritius is among the top five best places to get married and have your honeymoon, with its stunning scenery, warm tropical climate and natural hospitality of the Mauritian people. Most hotels offer extensive wedding and honeymoon packages and have their own experienced wedding co-ordinators. Legalities for getting married in Mauritius: • Your wedding can take place after three working days in Mauritius • You must be in Mauritius for at least seven nights in total • You must bring your original birth certificates • You must bring letters of personal details and proof of residence • If divorced, you must bring your decree absolute • If widowed, you must bring your spouse’s death certificate and previous marriage certificate • If you have changed your name by deed poll, you must bring your deed poll notice • You must be over 18 • Your wedding is a Civil Ceremony • The wedding is legal under the South African law. DESIGNER STUDIO
Indalo enhle Anna di Donato is a wedding dress designer with a passion for creating the perfect wedding dress for each bride

DESIGNER STUDIO
A
nna Di Donato creates one-ofa-kind wedding dresses, each an individual interpretation of the bride, with a modern twist. Whether it’s for a traditional wedding or a glamorous white occasion, she uses vibrant colours and Shweshwe fabric to create a dress that stands out from the crowd. A medical doctor by profession, Anna, who is half Italian, half Zimbabwean, came to Johannesburg to study medicine, met her husband Judd – and the rest is history. The couple, who have been married for eight years, have a son, Lior, aged two and a half, and are expecting a daughter in January 2016. Until Lior was born, Anna worked in the medical aesthetics field. But designing has always been part of her life and she used to design clothing in her spare time. When she lived in the US for two years, from 2008 to 2010, she started a handbag business, designing African-style bags. “I designed my own wedding gown when I was still at medical school and then I designed a wedding dress for a friend in 2014, and from there, creating beautiful bridal gowns became my passion,” she says. Anna loves using Shweshwe fabrics in her designs and combines these with beautiful, luxe fabrics to create one-of-a-kind wedding dresses for her clients. “I wanted a South African product that is made in South Africa for South Africans,” she explains. “Shweshwe is made in East London, in the Eastern Cape – it’s one of the few fabrics made in this country. It has a rich history, is very vibrant and is worn by every South African tribe. I love making traditional gowns using Shweshwe, but I also incorporate the fabric into white wedding dresses. When it comes to white wedding gowns, “I don’t do traditional, run-of-the-mill wedding dresses,” she says. “I look at each dress as an individual interpretation of the bride, and like to include a modern twist. I make it contemporary enough for a white wedding, but include a touch of tradition with the Shweshwe.”
Anna has named her business ‘Zodwa’, which comes from her mother’s second name, ‘Ntombi Zodwa’, which means ‘girls only’. Her mom was from a family of only daughters, she explains, and she’s always loved the name. Of course, her mother is a seamstress, although Anna says that much of what she knows was self-taught. “I’ve done a few courses,” she admits. “And I have a full-time experienced tailor to assist me with menswear and with detailed work on the dresses.” Although Anna does create men’s suits, the designs always have an African flavour. Many are designed to match the bride’s wedding gown. “My mother earned a living making baby clothes,” she explains. “And now I create wedding dresses.” She also continues in the medical aesthetics business, “The two fit well together,” she says, “as both are creative.” Anna works in her studio, which is
Shweshwe is made in East London, in the Eastern Cape. It has a rich history, is very vibrant and is worn by every South African tribe attached to her Saxonwold home. “Although it’s hard, because Lior is still young and demands attention, I love it,” she says. “It offers my clients a personal touch. I am able to welcome people into my home, which makes them feel as if they are part of the family and not just a customer. I have developed long-standing relationships with my clients because of this.” She admits that she is still learning every day. “I’m a doctor, but I’m clueless about business,” she laughs. Entrepreneurship, she says, is tough and you don’t get any breaks.
“But it’s important to find a career that makes you feel alive. To me, designing doesn’t feel like work. It’s great to be able to wake up every morning and do what I love!” Anna believes that if you are prepared to research and learn, and have a passion and a drive for something, you can literally do anything. “Judd is completely self-taught. He taught himself how to sculpt out of clay, he makes video games for a living. In fact, he’s a self-taught carpenter too, and made a lot of the furniture in our home.” One of the highlights of Anna’s career was showing the public her designs at the Wedding Expo at Oakfield Farm in January. “I got married there, so Oakfield Farm has always been special for me,” she says. “Then, this year, on my birthday on the 24th January, I had my first fashion show. The reception was incredible!” Anna admits that working in your own business can be tough, especially during the quiet times. “Come summer, everybody is in full wedding mode, but it is quiet in the winter months. Right now, we’re very busy, and I love that.” A word of advice? “Many brides leave making their wedding gowns to the last minute. It’s important to realise that designers need time to make the perfect dress. Also, they should put as much time into a traditional wedding as they do into a white wedding. This is not always the case, and it’s a pity.” www.nubianbride.co.za |

Where and how did you meet? A mutual friend of ours set us up on a blind date. I had had terrible experiences with blind dates so I was not keen. Reluctantly, I went on the date – and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. We had a perfect first date at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and, as they say, the rest is history. How did he propose? On the last night of our holiday in Hungary, Basil told me to dress up to celebrate our last night there. We had a romantic dinner at a restaurant along the Danube River. Towards the end of dinner, Basil seemed nervous. He started telling me how much I mean to him. Next thing he was on his knees with a beautiful ring. It was an unbelievable experience. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. Simplicity and elegance with a relaxed, romantic atmosphere. Our service providers were outstanding in providing the perfect setting to celebrate our union. The attention to detail was amazing. Our family and friends made us feel loved. We all had lots of fun. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Nothing. It was a perfect day for both of us. To be celebrating our union with family and friends meant everything to us. What was the highlight of your day? Hearing Basil’s vows. For that time, it felt like it was just him and me in the chapel. It melted my heart to hear how he feels about me, to hear his promises to me and the vision he has for us. www.nubianbride.co.za |

How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? The feeling that a Comrades Marathon runner gets at the finish line of the race. Magical. Ecstatic. Fulfilled. Grateful. Where did you go on honeymoon? The Seychelles, an amazing destination to relax after the stress of planning a wedding. What advice would you give to a soon-tobe bride? Your wedding will always be more expensive than what you anticipate. Decide on an affordable budget and stick to the big figure, but allow flexibility within that sum. And make sure you enjoy the day of your wedding even if some things do not go the way you had planned. Where and how did you meet? We met on Tinder! Our first date was at Mezepoli in Melrose Arch. How did he propose? He took me to this amazing boutique hotel in Houghton, the Residence, after ensuring I’d had a manicure. He even packed two of my favourite dresses (the whole thing was a surprise). We were waiting for dinner to be served in this beautiful, private open-plan dining room overlooking the pool and he told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me while Ed Sheeran played in the background. He got on his knee and everything – it was so special! Please provide a short description of your wedding day. We got married at Florence Guest Farm in Mpumalanga. The weather was perfect, which was lucky as it had been cold and rainy the day before. The ceremony was held in a ‘forest church’ and we had around 80 guests. It was a very beautiful, intimate and emotional day – a lot of tears were shed. We surprised guests with an entrance dance, which everyone found entertaining! Everyone cried through all of the speeches and one of my favourite moments was when I surprised Richard by singing him the song he proposed to me with. It was the perfect day spent with the perfect group of people. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I almost want to say nothing, but there was one annoying thing – the DJ played the wrong version of my entrance song! I wanted to kill him, but in 10 minutes all was forgotten because it really was such a magical day. www.nubianbride.co.za |

What was the highlight of your day? The reception was amazing, but I think highlights were our entrance dance, Richard’s speech (I cried) and my surprise song to him. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt weird for a split second – a wonderful sort of weird and then I forgot and had to keep reminding myself over the course of the night! Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to LUX Belle Mare in Mauritius – absolutely amazing! Best resort I’ve ever been to; I had the time of my life and would go back in a heartbeat. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s okay not to be too stressed out (I was stressing that I wasn’t stressed). It’s going to be the perfect day no matter what happens, so take it all in – you may not be present the whole way through, but try to remind yourself to stop and take it in occasionally. Trust your gut with all your suppliers – we changed venues three months before the wedding because we trusted our intuition. Be good to each other during the process and remember to take a moment to celebrate yourselves on the day. Where and how did you meet? We worked in the same company. We would chat occasionally, then one day, Vuyo asked me to go jogging. We had coffee afterwards and realised we had a lot in common. We met up a few more times and one day we kissed… and the rest is history. How did he propose? Vuyo asked me to take half a day’s leave and go to a friend’s wedding in Magaliesburg. I took the day off, and even bought myself a new pair of shoes for the wedding. We got to Mount Grace, checked in and I started getting ready. When I got out of the shower, Vuyo was sitting on the couch reading.I noticed a small box on the table. He said he’d bought me a pair of earrings. I started unwrapping the box and then he stood up and opened it. To my surprise it was a diamond ring. Then he admitted we weren’t going to a wedding; he had actually brought me there to propose. I was very surprised, cried and of course said “Yes”. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. The wedding included a picnic where DJ Paul Mtirara from Metro FM played the top 10 love songs that were a reflection of our love. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? As I was walking to the chapel, it started raining, so the picnic in the garden didn’t go as planned. So I’d probably change the weather just for that hour. But, in my culture, rain means blessing… so I guess it’s okay! What was the highlight of your day? It was definitely walking down the aisle. I realised that my wedding day was finally here. www.nubianbride.co.za |

How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? I actually felt a sense of relief and excitement because the ceremony was the most important part of the day for both of us. I also enjoyed having our closest friends and family there to witness our special moment with us. Where did you go on honeymoon? We travelled to the Garden Route. We walked with elephants in Knysna, enjoyed a canopy tour in Tsitsikamma and then stopped over in Oudtshoorn. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Sit down with your parents and discuss your plans, budget and guest counts so that everyone is on the same page from day one. It’s also important to enjoy your day and not sweat the small stuff. Where and how did you meet? I attended church with his brother. How did he propose? We were in New York on holiday and on a chilly afternoon, we went for a walk through Central Park. He asked if I wanted to sit on a nearby bench for a photo. I reluctantly agreed as I had been complaining about the cold. As I sat down, he went down on one knee and proposed. I suddenly felt all warm, burst into tears and said yes. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was relaxed, filled with simple beauty… so magical and ethereal. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Anthea I would not stress about insignificant details. Bongani I would be more present and enjoy the moment. What was the highlight of your day? Anthea How Bongani danced to ‘Classic Man’ while going down on his knees to take my garter off. Bongani The ceremony itself. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt natural, filled with inexplicable joy and excitement. Where did you go on honeymoon? We flew to Rome for three days and then cruised around the Med. We then spent two days in Rome before flying home. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Enjoy the planning and make it a point to enjoy your wedding day. Those few hours pass by very quickly. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Then he called me to the front of the celebration, went down on one knee and popped the question. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. Where and how did you meet? We met at a mutual friend’s house-warming party. It was a while until we met again, but by the second encounter it was evident to me that he was the man with whom I was going to spend the rest of my life. How did he propose? This really took me by surprise. I knew he was ‘the one’ and wanted nothing more than to be his wife, but truly didn’t see it coming. I had been away in Paris on a work trip and on my return my best friend collected me from the airport (little did I know this was part of the proposal plan). She dropped me off and I found rose petals covering the entire apartment, a candlelit bubble bath and a three-course candlelit dinner! After dinner, he went on one knee and asked me to marry him! It was emotional and special; I will never forget it! Please provide a short description of your wedding day. Wow! It was the most emotional and incredibly amazing day! We knew we wanted an intimate wedding with close family and friends. We wanted to make it about love and the celebration of our union. We believe we truly achieved this. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? There is nothing we’d change about our wedding day. It was everything we wanted and more! What was the highlight of your day? There are many moments to choose from but for me it was the vows! We chose to do the church’s vows and finish them off with some vows we had written ourselves; this was truly the most amazing moment of the day! Listening to the words he wrote about his love for me, I felt like I was in a movie! I have to share the first few words he said, which made this the best moment of my wedding: “I was not there when you were born, but I wish I could’ve been, I was not there to take you to your matric dance but I wish I could have been... www.nubianbride.co.za |

But I’m here now and I want to spend the rest of my life sharing the moments that are close to your heart.” For Thomas, the highlight was the moment I walked down the aisle towards him. It was the first time he saw me, and he said I was breathtaking. He cried. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? Truly surreal. Like it was meant to be! Where did you go on honeymoon? We travelled the Western Cape Garden Route. It was beautiful and incredibly romantic! What advice would you give to a bride-to-be? Enjoy the process to the fullest! Where and how did you meet? We met at a friend’s braai where we were watching the 2010 World Cup Final. Tebogo says I hit on him when he introduced himself to me; I told him he looked familiar, which he did, although I’d never met him before. We spent most of that evening chatting; it felt as if we’d known each other for years. We kept in touch after that and the rest is history. How did he propose? It was my 25th birthday, which I was making a big deal about as I was turning 25 on the 25th. He decided to make it extra special by asking for my hand in marriage. I hosted a birthday lunch in Sun City and when it was his turn to give a speech, to my surprise, he popped the question in front of my parents and our close friends! Please provide a short description of your wedding day. We wanted something different. We don’t like following trends, and we also love our country and the beautiful colours that come out when people go to traditional weddings. So, we decided to go for an African theme, which would also make our parents happy. We fused a modern white wedding and a traditional one and called it ‘African traditional chic’. We added the family gift-exchanging ceremony to make it really feel like a traditional wedding, although everything else was very modern. www.nubianbride.co.za |

TRADITIONAL REAL WEDDINGS
If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Nothing, everything was perfect. What was the highlight of your day? Tebogo: Seeing my beautiful wife-to-be for the first time. Tokoloho: Listening to my husband’s speech. He is very shy and never gives speeches, but he was such a natural on our day. I was really proud of him! How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was all so surreal. Where did you go on honeymoon? We took a little trip down the Garden Route, from George to Knysna. What advice would you give to a brideto-be? Make sure you take in every second of the day. When you do, time won’t fly as much as people say it does. Just be present, in the moment. L’ÊtÊ Flower Editor Otto de Jager is famous for his amazing artistry and creativity. Here he combines sage, mint and fresh summer greens with white to give a fresh summer appeal in these simple, modernist flower arrangements
S
omething old, something new
Centrepieces should be more creative in interpretation. It is a classic interpretation of amaranths and beautiful ceramic containers hint at a rich historical past. The reference is very much an Inca Village and Temple that has been rediscovered, with trailing ivy, bold faces of gods and goddesses. But once again clean, modern and simple.
FLOWERS
F resh and clean, white and green
The key word for summer is freshness, the cleanness of whites and greens. Sage greens, mint greens and fresh summer greens all combine

with white to allow for that fresh summer appeal. The style of flower arranging is simple, modernist and very much in the genre of Jeff Leatham. It’s about proportions, clean lines and the shape of the vase.
Out of the oridinary
Fresh summer flowers in soft oranges, pinks, greens and whites in glass vases offer a very simple and modern interpretation. There is a tremendous amount of movement, texture, shape and colour involved for an interesting table setting, but it’s something that is removed from the clichÊd table centrepiece that we have become so accustomed to.

Here we find another interpretation created using Lego pieces. Stacked glass vases give a visual image of Lego blocks. To draw attention to the ‘Lego box’, the power of colour has been simplified by only using one shade. In this way, the colour draws attention to the shape and simplicity of the stacked vases.

Le Sel @ The Cradle restaurant and wedding venue is situated in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind just thirty-five minutes from both Johannesburg and Pretoria near Lanseria airport. With its panoramic views and breathtaking scenery, the restaurant provides an opportunity for unique and spectacular weddings. This popular venue situated on 3000 hectares of game farm offers endless opportunities. We are able to host a wide range of ceremonies and receptions from smaller weddings that may take place under 800 year old indigenous trees alongside the Motsetse stream, to larger more formal weddings in the Stone Room and the Restaurant. The Restaurant was designed with wedding functions in mind. The space is ideally suited for weddings of up to 180 guests. The dramatic building perfectly compliments the setting to create a simple yet spectacular space that can adapt to a wide range of dĂŠcor. Our beautiful teak tables may suit your reception but can also convert to ten-seater round tables. We spent a great deal of energy designing and building our teak and leather chairs which resulted in an extremely comfortable seat. The Stone room doubles as a wedding chapel for those who wish to tie the knot on the premises. The sliding glass front of this multifunctional building opens out onto a long balcony and offers staggering views of the waterhole and beyond to the Magaliesberg. The room seats up to 180 guests for the ceremony and can also be used for smaller wedding receptions with a maximum of 60 guests. Picnic weddings - Huge indigenous trees grow along the watercourse that develops into the Motsetse Stream. We are able to host wonderful ceremonies and receptions under these 800 year old giants and once again the style of the wedding is yours to create.

Fig
The classic Roman Grecian olive jar with one of the holy fruits from the Old Testament‌ classical elements are used but interpreted in essentially a very modern, graphic, clean, horizontal line. There is very little detail so as not to suffocate the beauty of the fig and the Grecian olive jar. In fact, the simplicity highlights the gnarled branches, the shape of the figs, the curve of the vases, even the dendrobium orchids that have been scattered to soften the graphic details.

The bride The dramatic neutrals, browns, muted greens, greys and texture support the delicate whites and the bride’s beauty. This is playing up the surreal madness rather than the reality of the wedding. This image is about joy, freshness, fun and is ultimately geared to garner a smile.
Iconic historical references are used: Greek sculptured heads, the apple and pear representing Adam and Eve, the butterfly from the Garden of Eden. The snake is reminiscent of Cleopatra and reminds us of the importance of its power as a symbol of protection. Then there’s the human skull… all of these pieces have been thrown together to remind us of our rich historical past. Once again, the colour focus is on green and white.
Vestal virgin
The feast
Mermaids’ delight: we have gone underwater to interpret and engage the ocean with spring enchantment. Barnacle pink becomes the focus, with classic elements like silver-plated cutlery, mother-ofpearl shells and pink flowers to highlight the barnacles. Much magic, but orchestrated madness to spring shows its abundance.

H
ow does spending time lazing on the beach, taking romantic moonlit walks, enjoying delicious food and making plans for your future together sound? Wonderful. Lasting memories are made on honeymoon, especially when you are in Mauritius. If you are up for more than soaking up the sun on the white sandy beaches or sipping on cocktails at your resort’s swimming pool, then enjoy one, or plenty, of the island’s fabulous outdoor activities. Black River Gorges National Park Hike in the Black River Gorges National Park, a 6,794-hectare forest, to view indigenous plants, birds and wildlife. Blue Bay Snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat out to see the fish and coral in Blue Bay, Mauritius’ only marine park.

The island’s cuisine is sublime, with a mixture of French, Creole, Indian, Chinese and English influences. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on earth, Mauritius offers not only fantastic weather and exquisite beaches, but also a distinct cultural identity that is well worth exploring.
Dine at Domaine du Chasseur Head here for an adventurous lunch of roasted wild boar, duck or deer curry with one of the best island views.

LINGERING LONG Long Beach is a game changer in the island’s modern resort history and Julia Rice was lucky enough to experience it
T
he name Long Beach couldn’t be more apt. Located on the Belle Mare Peninsula on the eastern side of the island, and sheltered from the wind, the hotel occupies the longest and widest satin soft, sandy coastline of any Mauritius resort. Only a few years old, Long Beach, which forms part of Sun Resorts, is causing a worldwide stir. Honeymooners can’t get enough of this luxurious, tropical, five-star resort, and why should they? All 255 rooms offer magnificent sea views, so every morning you’ll experience the pleasure of waking up to crystal clear, turquoise water. The days are hot, but not unbearable and, besides, there’s a quick fix for that flushed feeling: the main pool. All sunned out, it is time for some snacks, more cocktails and perhaps some dancing too. You will find all of this at Tides restaurant. Don’t feel like moving from your beach spot or pool lounger? No problem. A waiter will personally take your order and bring it to you. Eating at Long Beach is an experience all on its own. The main restaurant, Le Marche, offers a buffet with a difference. The Italian restaurant, Sapori, offers authentic Italian cuisine and the delectable aromas of garlic, fresh bread and tiramisu to die for will have you all but running to get a table. Located on the bustling Piazza, Japanese a la carte restaurant Hasu is a perfect combination of contemporary design and authentic cuisine. Then there’s Chopsticks, a casual Chinese restaurant fabulous for a light lunch and a glass of wine. No luxury resort honeymoon would be complete without a trip to the spa, and Sea Spa is a destination on its own. If you are up for some strenuous activity on honeymoon (you are probably not), Long Beach is a gym bunny’s paradise. The first-rate Sports Centre is fully equipped. For something less strenuous enjoy daily yoga and stretch classes offered both indoors and outdoors. Waterskiing, scuba diving, big game fishing and canoeing are just some of the adventure sports on offer. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down; in fact it is just the beginning. Nightly entertainment displays a variety of local talent around the Piazza and Tides restaurants. Bombora nightclub is where you will dance the night away to the island’s best music. Spending a day in the nearby quaint town of Flic en Flac is a real treat. Here you will experience the best Mauritus has to offer when it comes to food, markets and art. When all you want to do is linger longer, leaving Long Beach is bittersweet. www.longbeachmauritius.com www.nubianbride.co.za |

WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE? It starts from the inside. I drink plenty of water and try to sleep as much as possible. I cleanse every night, using Avon Nutra Effects Micellar Cleansing Water, and take a break from wearing make-up from time to time. Also, make sure your brushes are clean. Lots of grubby germs can grow on applicators.

WHAT IS THE ONE PRODUCT YOU CAN’T DO WITHOUT? I have two. Deodorant and lip gloss.
Picture Tim Hulme
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SKINCARE PRODUCTS? I’m currently obsessed with Anew Clinical Skinvincible Multi-Shield Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50. I use most of the Avon Nutra Effects range too. I really enjoy Self Foaming Face Wash.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE MAKE-UP PRODUCTS? Make-up and I have an interesting relationship. I always get daring and bold new products but I also tend to stick to the basics I love. I can’t do without a great eyeliner and mascara combo. I’m loving Big and False Lash Mascara by Avon. I like to experiment with lipsticks. My favourite at the moment is Radiant Raisin.

Hair Affair Brides-to-be are faced with a variety of hair choices for their Big Day. We chat to the celebrity FR!KA styling team who were responsible for styling the models’ hair for both our fashion and gown shoots in this issue. Here they offer advice about the latest hair trends and share some tips on how to look your best on your wedding day

WEFTS
are easy to manipulate because they are an instant updo or down style for younger brides. Once your professional stylist has created a look, it can be worn in a larger bun and can be unrolled to keep the look casual for your honeymoon. You can also opt for an off-theshoulder style if you prefer. Wefts give you the freedom to wear your hair to suit the occassion.

2
This is the most common form of styling for brides who want a more classic look, with curls and strands gently hanging off their shoulders. There is a wide selection to choose from to obtain the desired look.
WEAVES
Frika’s Coco Weave, with its length and natural curl, is a fabulous choice for the classic bride – and it is easy to style. It comes in three colours (Rich Black, Coco Twist and Brown Sugar) to match the prospective bride’s style and skin tone. The curl is soft and easy to style and it was designed to withstand the South African weather. The Frika Hotex 18-inch weave is a simple yet elegant choice for women who wish to style their hair on a regular basis. It can be styled using medium heat and, with the right hair accessories, can give great versatility, either classic and sophisticated or casual and relaxed.

FR!KA Coco weave
FR!KA Yaki braid
THE FRIKA YAKI BRAID
is ideal for this style as it comes in different lengths to suit every bride (10, 12 and 14 inches). This is also versatile because it can be heat-styled. Some of the more popular trends are long side braids, flowing curls or even a gentle, more structured updo. To ensure you get the best results, keep your hair and scalp healthy as your hair will cover up the bonds so that they do not show. Have your weave done about a week before the wedding to make sure there are no problems on the day. www.nubianbride.co.za |

BRAIDED UPDOS
Top Tips
1. How often should I visit the salon to prepare my hair for the Big Day? If your hair has been relaxed, you should visit the salon every two weeks for a hair treatment. Wait 6-8 weeks before relaxing your hair. The final relaxer should be done a week before the wedding to give your scalp a chance to settle. Visit the salon once a week and at least three weeks before the wedding for deep conditioning. The actual set should be done a day before the wedding (avoid swimming as it may damage your hair). 2. What are the best wefts or wigs to invest in? Select a weft that is pre styled so that you know what your style look is in advance before your big day. This allows for you and your stylist to pick styles that suit the shape of your face and your gown. Wigs can be used but make sure they complement each other and will look good on both your wedding day and the days preceding and after the wedding. 3. What products should I use to maintain healthy hair for my wedding and honeymoon? Conditioning is a very important step after any hair treatment, even on natural hair. Once a week, condition your hair to retain moisture and improve hair quality. Use cream-based and not petroleum-based products. If you have chemically treated hair, either relaxed or colour-treated, invest in a good quality conditioner
158
| www.nubianbride.co.za
FR!KA Yaki braid
and hair dress. Use a hair and scalp cream or oil to maintain hair and avoid scalp dryness. 4. If I decide to have a weave or braid for my wedding, what should I do? Take the design of your dress and wedding theme into consideration. If you are wearing very little jewellery and a boob tube gown, long hair is ideal. Consider what you are wearing on your head and if the chosen style matches the rest of the look. If you decide on braids or a weave, do this a week prior to the wedding, especially if a weave is sewn in. Braids will need time to loosen so that you feel comfortable on the day. Use good quality hair that will last throughout your honeymoon: the better the quality, the better the result. 5. How far in advance should I start preparing my hair for colour or chemical services? Chemical and colour processes on natural hair can be done between 1-2 weeks to two months before the Big Day to allow hair to set and for you to decide if you like the colour. Visit the salon a week before the wedding to redo the roots with relaxer; hair can then be styled as you wish it to look on your wedding. If you are thrilled with the style, have it redone a day before the wedding so that it is fresh. www.frika.co.za
Pictures Fern Tree Wedding Photography
This is a simple style with lots of versatility. Braids can be worn down or as an updo for your wedding, and in various styles for your honeymoon. The requirement is minimal as they can be created on very short natural hair and can also be used as a way to grow your hair out. There is a variety of colours to choose from within the FR!KA range, from natural colours to more vibrant on-trend hues. FR!KA Maxi and FR!KA Sazi styling braids up in a bun or to the side for a more romantic look, using a beautiful jewelled hairclip for decoration. They are easily created by a professional and can be done up to a week before the wedding to give the hair a chance to settle. This makes styling for the Big Day much easier. The Deep Wave in 14-inch length will give a similar look and is an alternative style to use. By using FR!KA Hot Fibre or FR!KA Ombre Braids, your style can be achieved without too much effort. The risk of tangling is minimal and a natural curl can be added by braiding the hair and adding hot water to set the style until it grows out. The more traditional bride can tie all her hair into a stylish Mohawk, leaving space for the veil at the bottom, a look that will take her through the wedding. For added elegance and style, the FR!KA Top Deck range can give regular colour choices an edge.

GOOD ADVICE
Master Chef
Renowned chef Coco Reinharz is intent on making fine African cuisine a force to be reckoned with. Here, in part of a series of Good Advice columns for Nubian Bride, he offers an inspirational recipe fit for a stylish wedding
Herbal crème brûlée INGREDIENTS 400ml of fresh cream 100ml full-cream milk any fresh herb you like 5 large egg yolks 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra for the topping
METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Sit four 175ml ramekins in a deep roasting pan. 2. Pour the cream into a medium pan with the milk. Drop the fresh herb in as well and set aside. 3. Put the egg yolks and sugar in a mixing bowl and whisk for 1 minute with an electric hand whisk until it becomes pale and a bit fluffy. Put the pan with the cream on a medium heat and bring almost to the boil. When you see bubbles appear, take the pan off the heat. 4. Pour the hot cream into the beaten egg yolks, stirring with a whisk, and sieve over a large jug. Pour the hot mixture through to strain it. 5. Pour hot water into the roasting pan to reach about 1.5cm below the top of the ramekins. Pour hot cream into the ramekins; fill right to the top. Put them in the oven and lay a baking sheet over the
192
| www.nubianbride.co.za
top of the tin so it sits well above the ramekins and completely covers them, but not the whole roasting pan. Leave a small gap at one side to allow air to circulate. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the mixture is softly set. To check, gently sway the roasting pan and if the crème brûlées are ready, they will wobble a bit like a jelly in the middle. Don’t let them get too firm. 6. Lift the ramekins out of the roasting pan with oven gloves and set them on a wire rack to cool for just a couple of minutes. Then put in the fridge to cool completely. This can be done overnight without affecting the texture. 7. When ready to serve, wipe round the top edge of the dishes, sprinkle caster sugar
over each ramekin, then use a blow torch to caramelise this. Hold the flame just above the sugar and keep moving it round and round until caramelised.
