hese days, more and more international couples are having spectacular weddings in South Africa, leaving all the details to specialist local wedding planners. In our Planning section on page 114, we chat to Marius Barnard of Weddings by Marius about a wedding he planned recently for a couple from the UK. Our expansion into Africa and the rest of the world is sure to bring more international business into the South African bridal industry whilst providing the local market with unrivalled returns on investment. Don’t forget to catch the monthly blog ‘Coffee with the King’ on our website to see what Otto de Jager of ODJ Events was up to on a recent visit to Paris. Johannesburg is a fabulous wedding destination. To show our predeliction for an urban state of mind, our 28-page fashion shoot (see page 50), was shot over two hectic days in the streets of Maboneng. The Nubian Bride team was there in full force. Each look was carefully curated and caters for every conceivable taste. It was
a pleasure to work with top international brands such as Maggie Sottero, Rebecca Ingram and Essense of Australia, Lipsy of London, Pronovias, Nicole, Modeca and TM Lewin. The shoes were also exceptional, thanks to Chrystal Erasmus from Imaani. You can catch all the action on the behind-the-scenes video we’ve put up on the website, which explains our inspiration, the Alicia Keyes hit, ‘Empire State of Mind’. As the African bridal thought leader, the type of content we produce is unique, as in one-of-a-kind, and enters new frontiers. As exceptional as it is, the content needs to be relevant, practical and different, which we have achieved in this issue. The South African bridal industry has resisted change for so long, so it is very exciting to see what is coming out of our creative ranks and that the African bridal renaissance is in full swing. We hope to pull our competitors along and inspire them to greater heights at the same time. Here’s to celebrating the quintessence of bridal vogue, one beautiful issue at a time.

TRENDS
HOT RIGHT NOW
Who says bachelorettes must be held at home? A new trend, according to mega-celeb Minnie Dlamini, is to get away to another country. Minnie and her bridesmaids jetted off to France a month before her September nuptials. Sadly, they’re tight-lipped about the trip as it was filmed to be aired on Vuzu Amp as part of Minnie’s upcoming TV special entitled Becoming Mrs Jones.

Especially for summer, a list of what’s hot and what’s cool when it comes to weddings
GREAT GETAWAYS
REGISTRIES FOR CHARITY
TAKE THE CAKE… Summer wedding cakes take dessert to a whole new level… why not try the ice cream route? (Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream now makes a whole range of delectable ones), or choose a seasonal alternative with a fruit filling (we’re talking strawberry shortcake or citrusinfused fillings). And don’t forget… there’s always chocolate. Or doughnuts; tiers of round deliciousness make a great wedding cake (like cupcakes but more melt-in-the-mouth). If you’re keen on a naked cake, cover it up a bit with icing that drizzles off the top and along the cake tiers. For more inspiration, take a look at our stunning cake feature on page 143.
It’s become increasingly popular to offer a selection of charity organisations, or one particular needy cause close to the couple’s heart, to donate to instead of buying a gift from a wedding registry. In fact, it’s so popular in the US that charity donation registries are being set up, or included in regular registries, to give guests the choice of purchasing an item or donating towards a charitable institution. If you’re given the option of adding a charity to your registry, or making it charity-oriented, this new trend is both inspiring, cool and can even save lives. www.nubianbride.co.za |

ON THE MENU What you serve your guests depends largely on your theme and budget, but as trends will have it, little bites are becoming big news these days. Paired with a delicious drink, they are magical. Think oysters and champagne, mini tacos with a shot of tequila, alcoholic popsicles… you can go wild! Healthy fare has become very popular: cauliflower rice, zucchini pasta, sweet potato chips with sauces and organic ingredients. A choice of little dishes means guests can eat lighter if they wish, especially in the summer heat.
DRESSING UP The latest trends in wedding gowns call for either ultra-modern or a new take on a classic style, such as vintage lace beautifully put together to create a stylish masterpiece. In the modern realm, brides are adding a touch of drama with black adornments (bows, sashes, decorative embroidery) on an all-white ensemble. And then we have capes… romantic, regal, a statement piece or little capelets to add another element to an otherwise simple silhouette. French designers Elie Saab and Monique Lhuillier adorned their latest creations with long capes, so if that’s a look you’re after, go for it. It’s hot off the runway right now.
GIVE US YOUR HAND ALL THINGS BRIGHT Let your wedding pop with dynamic colour in the theme, décor, flowers and gown. Choose one or two hues, or add an accent to create a mix of bright and beautiful. One colour can make a sophisticated statement (think mandarin, watermelon pink or scarlet). Nothing beats bright flower arrangements or centrepieces... your call. Your colours. It’s time to play…

TRENDS BOTTOMS UP Let’s hear it for the Old Fashioned, and other time-honoured cocktails, trend of the moment for pre-dinner drinks at weddings. The Old Fashioned was one of the first cocktails ever invented. Created in the 19th century, it was the tipple of choice at New York’s fancy Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Made from bourbon or rye whiskey and a few dashes of Angostura bitters, it’s heaven in a glass. Another favourite at that time was the aptly named Manhattan, a centuryold cocktail that blends whiskey, vermouth and bitters.
STYLISH MUST-HAVE Travel in style with one of these beautiful weave handbags created by Samsonite. its latest Weave Collection is available in either taupe or black, in a choice of styles – shopping tote, bucket bag or backpack. All are functional and chic, ideal for travelling on honeymoon. www.houseofsamsonite.co.za
PERSONALISED PICTURES Photo booths are still popular but now they have a twist. Instead of fun accessories, (hats, sunglasses and mock moustaches), you can dress up in old-fashioned costumes and have your picture taken, portrait studiostyle. Guests are also enjoying all sorts of perks, including uploading directly to your Instagram account.
CHANEL INSPIRATION
LAWN GAMES Take advantage of the glorious South African summer weather and offer entertainment in the form of lawn games for your guests, such as croquet and even boules (a French bowling game). Everything vintage is really new again, so take a classic lawn game and give it a modern twist.
In its Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2017/2018 runway show in Paris, Chanel opted for a touch of drama and decadence with an over-the-top, attention-grabbing tulle veil trailing behind a magnificent wedding gown. The veil itself was simple; it was the length that made it a jaw-dropping, gorgeous statement.

ubrey and Lesego met at work, became lunch buddies and then great friends. Eventually their relationship blossomed and they started dating. Aubrey didn’t propose until after the traditional lobola proceedings had taken place. “His family wrote a letter to mine and negotiations started,” Lesego explains. He surprised her with a proposal on a road trip en route to Cape Town. They stopped at a wine farm in the Winelands. “I had no idea that this had all been planned with some help from my best friends. They helped Aubrey pick out the ring and had it secretly couriered to him,” Lesego says with a smile. According to Lesego, the wedding was: “Incredible, the most memorable day of our lives. It was freezing that day but we felt the warmest love from friends and family. We really felt as if God showed up at our wedding.” Would they change anything about their special day? Apparently the videographer was almost a no-show,

so Lesego says that was the only glitch. The highlight of Lesego’s Big Day was when Aubrey said his wedding vows. “I was blown away,” she says. Standing together for the first time as man and wife was another very special moment. “It felt amazing and so surreal, as if we were in a dream and could wake up at any moment.” After the wedding, the couple honeymooned in the Wilderness, staying between Knysna and George. Advice for the bride-to-be? “Stay calm. The little things that might not work out don’t really matter. he couple met at a friend’s house-warming braai. “Tumelo said ‘Hi’, smiled – and as they say, the rest is history!” says Thobeka. He proposed while they were on holiday in Thailand. “We were on a boat cruising the Phi Phi Islands. We stopped off at a beach, our last stop before heading back, and he went down on one knee,” she remembers. “Our wedding day was nothing short of amazing! Every moment felt like we were part of a dream. It’s a day we will never forget and that we will treasure forever.” The highlight for both of them was: “Walking down the aisle and seeing most people crying.” Finally standing next to each other as husband and wife “felt surreal,” she says. The only thing Thobeka would change about their perfect wedding day? “We would start the ‘bride and groom’ photo shoot a bit earlier so we could get more photos!” The only advice they have for a bride-to-be? Start the planning as early as you can. That way you can relax and enjoy your special day.

he couple were introduced to each other by a colleague of Gosego’s who knew he was looking for a girlfriend. He had already mentioned Gosego to Monzo (Phestine) and told her all about him. She gave him her number and some photographs, and Gosego fell in love at first sight. They agreed to be introduced – and the rest is history. Gosego proposed at home in Kathu. He asked Phestine how much her parents would pay for lobola, and she asked him why. He replied by asking her to marry him. “She made me the happiest man in the world and said ‘yes’ with a huge smile on her face,” he said. Their wedding was “a dream come true – literally the best day of our lives”. “It was emotional, meaningful, and above all, joyful and fun.” The couple was even blessed with a little rain at the end of what they described as an “epic day”. A highlight was the way the church was decorated, and the reception. For Gosego, his highlight was “how beautiful my wife looked on the day”. They were

ea and Themba met in Rustenburg in 2013 when they joined Anglo American’s graduate programme. “She didn’t really show much interest in me,” he remembers. “I liked her the moment I watched her address the auditorium. She was full of energy and incredibly beautiful. I just imagined myself being with her.” Although Themba felt as if they were “worlds apart”, he admits that “there was always this ease around each other, it felt like I had known Kea for years”. Themba proposed on a dinner date. Kea recalls how, towards the end of the evening, “he became emotional, expressing how fortunate he was to have me in his life. I’d never seen him like that. He finally proposed… we were both teary and in our own bubble. That was one of the best days of my life.” Their wedding was an intimate affair, held at Red Ivory in Hartbeespoort on a beautiful December day.

"Of course, marrying into a Tsonga family, the sound of Xigasa music was a definite hit"
“The chapel ceremony was beyond magical. Emotional, teary faces with the biggest smiles ushered us in. At that moment, everything ceased to exist. Seeing our families and friends uniting made it really special,” says Kea. Red Ivory offers an unpretentious, luxury bush feel, with the most breathtaking views. “We let the venue guide our décor, so as to not take away from its natural beauty.” Would they change anything about their special day? “We would have probably had an entire wedding weekend. We really did not want it to end. We loved every moment.” Themba says his highlight was “seeing my bride walk down that aisle. It felt as if I were dreaming. I literally had to fight back the tears. I will forever treasure that moment.” For Kea, it was saying their vows in the middle of the bush in a treetop chapel with magnificent views. “My heart could have literally stopped,” she recalls. Kea and Themba honeymooned in the Maldives. They left a few days after the weekend and spent Christmas and New Year on their island resort. Advice for soon-to-be newlyweds? “Start planning as early as possible. There are so many intricacies to a wedding that you don’t want to overlook any. Lastly, don’t sweat the small stuff – have fun! DESIGNER STUDIO
MASTERPIECES & MEMENTOES Nubian Bride chats to Katherine-Mary Pichulik, founder of quirky Afrocentric jewellery and clothing brand, PICHULIK, about her inspiring pieces that we feature regularly on our fashion pages
DESIGNER STUDIO Please tell us about PICHULIK and how you started the brand. I’m a BA Fine Arts graduate from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town as well as a qualified patissier (pastry chef). After my studies I travelled to India and Spain where I collected interesting and unique pieces of jewellery. Then, when I returned to Cape Town, I began making jewellery from rope and other items. When strangers began stopping me on the street to enquire about my neck pieces, I decided to turn to jewellery design in earnest. I launched PICHULIK in August 2012.
PICHULIK creates African jewellery that more than holds its own on the international design stage
What is PICHULIK? The essence of the PICHULIK brand is the pursuit of imparting sacred feminine wisdom for the modern woman. We utilise organic materials such as jade, shell, horn and hemp that we assemble into gentle forms to impart powerful meanings of ancient feminine wisdom and craftsmanship. No matter what inspires us, whether it’s Mali’s Islamic architecture, the shades of North African garments combined with gleams of copper and gold or subdued desert colours emboldened with gold and gemstone, PICHULIK creates African jewellery that more than holds its own on the international design stage. Urban design, time-honoured craft and Africa’s vibrant colours meet in every neck piece, bracelet and pair of earrings that we create. Who is involved in the business today? I’m the founder and designer, while Nadya von Stein is our garment designer of a range we call PICHULIK by Nadya. We have a fantastic team that is made up of a group of craftspeople who design in our Woodstock studio. Please give advice to brides-to-be on how to accessorise their wedding gowns to make them not only more individual, but also more African. I think wearing a talisman jewellery item on your wedding day is so important – it brings intention and meaning to a great life transition and initiation in your life. I think it is really all about distilling how you want to feel on your Big Day, what story you wish to tell and then choosing thoughtfully accordingly. I would focus on feeling radiant, beautiful and sensual… whatever that means for you. Choose fabrics that feel delicious against your skin, choose embellishment that draws attention to the www.nubianbride.co.za |

DESIGNER STUDIO sparkle of your eyes, the rich golden brown of the nape of your neck. I’m not surprised you feature our pieces so often in your fashion pages. PICHULIK is a brand that speaks of women’s strength and African storytelling. The trend right now is to take white wedding gowns and make them more part of one’s heritage with exquisite jewellery like yours; modern pieces that are Africaninspired. What was your intention when you started out designing your jewellery pieces? Our intention was to bring back the sacred and ceremony in jewellery. We are honoured that we get to make amazing talisman pieces for weddings around the world. Women from all cultures have asked us to wrap messages, blessings, heirlooms and sentimental objects into their pieces to celebrate this transition. Some expert advice? Do not subscribe to anyone else’s concept of what your wedding should be. There are no ‘shoulds’. It is about your initiation into another family and the sacred union with your partner. Adorn yourself in a way that illuminates your spirit and brings you joy, walking with all the lessons and stories of your journey into a new journey in unity with another. www.pichulik.com

LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS More and more bridal couples from out of the country are having spectacular weddings in South Africa, leaving all the details to experienced local wedding planners like Marius Barnard, who is renowned for creating magical experiences. We chat to him
PLANNING
"Amy walked down towards the beach for the wedding ceremony and told her father, ‘This is exactly what I wanted!’ That was a massive highlight for me"
Y
ou may be thousands of kilometres away, but there are specialist wedding planners, like Marius Barnard of Weddings by Marius, who can plan your wedding for you right here in South Africa, down to the minutest detail. He specialises in personalising weddings for couples, whether they’re based here in South Africa or in another country.
Venue “The wedding photographed here, at Kurland in Plettenberg Bay, was arranged a year in advance. I only actually met the couple face to face two days before they tied the knot,” Marius explains. Amy and Austin had spent a holiday at Kurland previously and decided that this was where they wanted to get married, with the ceremony on the beach. In addition, Austin is interested in horses, and Kurland’s polo players and horses have international status (the Kurland International Polo Test was held on this privately owned www.nubianbride.co.za |
115
PLANNING
estate for a number of years and there are grounds and stables there).
Down to the nitty-gritty Being in different countries meant communicating via Skype, but Marius said it was easy because Amy had definite ideas and he was able to put them into practice. Marius admits that Amy trusted him implicitly to create her dream wedding and that he was responsible for planning every minute detail. “She knew what she wanted and trusted my instincts to the extent that we didn’t even have to do a mock-up for her. I also coordinated meetings with suppliers regarding décor, hiring, flowers, etc. on Skype so that she was kept in the loop.”
Guests There were 40 guests, all of whom flew from the UK to attend the wedding. Marius said that this was a blessing, as when one is flying to a destination wedding, one is unlikely to cancel attending, and the number of guests remained constant.
Décor Marius is responsible for creating around 90 percent of the weddings at Kurland, so
he knows the look and feel of the property. “The venue lends itself to an old-fashioned atmosphere; it’s an old stable that has been beautifully refurbished, with a cobbled floor on the verandah and a very rustic feel. The chandeliers and crockery created an elegant, glamorous environment. Amy wanted a classic old-world theme with beautiful modern touches, which we created with the whitewashed Tiffany chairs and the basilcoloured tablecloths. Another big advantage is the fact that because the décor and theme were so classic, the wedding photographs will never date.”
Food and drink “I loved Amy’s idea of having a South African braai; I made the menu extremely upmarket. We had a braai and fires set a little apart from the dinner tables, so that guests were aware of that woody aroma without being engulfed in it. We served langoustines, prawns and fillet from the braai – it was all very elegant and delicious.”
Advice
"People were blown away by the décor and the venue and how the wedding had been put together. Nothing was overdone; it was just enough" 116
| www.nubianbride.co.za
Marius is adamant that a couple do their homework about the planner and make sure that he or she has coordinated international weddings before. “Call them and speak to them,” he says. “Make sure they are on the same page as you are, that their style suits what you are looking for. My approach is a balance of classical and contemporary, for instance.”

THE SILO HOTEL, CAPE TOWN
The perfect excuse to honeymoon in Cape Town? The brand new Zeitz MOCAA Museum of Contemporary Art Africa that opened in October, which is part of the ontrend Silo District. And, of course, there’s only one place to stay… The Silo Hotel. This is the newest luxury hotel in the Mother City; it’s also extremely beautiful and unusual. Offering just 28 plush guest rooms and a penthouse suite with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Fairest Cape in all its glory, the hotel occupies six floors above the museum that rivals internationally acclaimed contemporary museums like the Tate Modern, MoMA in New York City and the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Both the museum and the hotel were designed by world-famous architect
Thomas Heatherwick, who transformed what was originally a building and six rows of seven grain silos next to it into a modern masterpiece. The entire place was designed by hotel founder Liz Biden and her husband, Phil, who own The Royal Portfolio collection of award-winning establishments in South Africa. A new landmark on Cape Town’s iconic skyline, the Silo District, as it is called, incorporates the museum, hotel and various stores. The hotel offers numerous luxurious facilities including two restaurants, a bar, spa, gym and beautiful rooftop pool with panoramic views. It’s the perfect base from which to enjoy all of Cape Town’s numerous attractions, including some of the best beaches in the world and some internationally acclaimed restaurants and wine estates. www.theroyalportfolio.com

THE ICEHOTEL, SWEDEN
Enjoy an extraordinary adventure sleeping in an ice sculpture in the iconic Icehotel in Sweden. A honeymoon at this extraordinary ice hotel not only includes staying in a freshly built guest room made of ice, but also includes a number of exciting activities such as dog sled rides, hunting for the Northern Lights by snowmobile and encountering reindeer. You can also dine in the wilderness, learn how to sculpt ice using traditional tools, go horse riding at night or skiing in the Poikkijarvi Woods. The hotel, which is located in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi, was originally an art gallery of sorts, a place where local art was displayed. Then somebody asked if it was possible to sleep over… this year marks the hotel’s 28th birthday, and, like every year, different artists from around the world are invited to create brand new art suites for guests to stay in. For 2017 there were 28 artists from 11 different countries around the globe whose task it was to make their designs come to life as guest suites, or ‘art suites’. In some cases, when the artist’s work is very popular, the same artist will be asked to come back and design another masterpiece the following year. Of course, ice sculpture is a most unique art form and is extremely complex; in fact, each ‘art suite’ is created using enough snow and ice to make 700 million
snowballs. This year, the artists have pulled out all the stops to create some exquisite and very exciting experiences for guests. Guests can sleep right next to King Kong, be part of Alice in Wonderland, take a virtual trip to space… there are 15 exciting, mind altering designs, each one more extraordinary than the next. www.icehotel.com
HONEYMOONS
To the city
GRAMERCY PARK HOTEL, NEW YORK
This legendary hotel has been part of the New York scene since the 1920s and is still a favourite haunt of the rich and famous. It was revamped in 2006 by iconic artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, but has retained its cachet as a New York institution. Schnabel is famous for two movies including the jawdropping The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Both brought him international acclaim. He transformed the hotel in 2006 along with cofounder of Studio 54, Ian Schrager. The new iteration is filled with a rotating collection of exquisite contemporary artworks by internationally famous 20th century artists
like Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Twombly. Enjoy superb cuisine at the Italianinspired Maialino restaurant and the two sought-after bars, the Rose and Jade Bars. Aside from the magnificent art pieces, the hotel is literally a work of art in its own right. A new addition is the exquisitely landscaped roof garden restaurant, offering stunning views of the New York skyline. A bonus of staying in this iconic hotel is exclusive access to leafy Gramercy Park, the city’s only private park. But, the 190 spacious guest rooms and suites are also a good reason to stay here… furnished with a combo of bespoke furniture and flea market finds, they feature rich velvet curtains, leather wing chairs, carved stone mantelpieces and, of course, original works of art. The décor and colour choices are Renaissance-inspired, giving the feeling of living in a Renaissance painting. www.gramercyparkhotel.com

THE PERFECT COMPLEXION FOR YOUR BIG DAY
The stress you experience in the build-up to your wedding day wreaks havoc on your skin tone and complexion. Internationally renowned Dr. Clark at Sandton Aesthetic Institute has developed a zero-downtime, skin glow treatment that is ideal for brides-to-be. The Bridal Glow The Bridal Glow Facial is an aesthetic grade facial designed to improve skin glow and reveal a perfect complexion. The three-stage treatment requires a single visit and is completed within an hour. It includes Mesotherapy, a Chemical Peel and a DermaPen HA Mask. The key to achieving your bridal glow is by gently exfoliating the skin using a light chemical peel, followed by mesotherapy, where an individualised cocktail of vitamins is injected for hydration and skin tightening. Lastly, the HA mask drives peptides deep into the dermis for ultimate hydration. The result: a perfect, even and glowing complexion on the day you need to look your absolute best. Additional popular bridal treatments available at SAI include: IV Skin Brightening for a lighter and brighter complexion, Chemical Peels to treat troublesome pigmentation worries and Laser hair removal for a blemish-free wedding day and honeymoon.

fter a year of adjustment, you’ve made the one-year mark and it’s time to celebrate your love again, but this time as a married couple. It is hard to come up with a gift that depicts how meaningful your marriage is. But here’s an idea of what that first anniversary means… Traditionally, first wedding anniversary gifts are made from paper. Pretty difficult? strong in these first years. Work together to keep your marriage going even during the toughest times. If you prefer, you can take the modern tradition of giving a clock or watch on your first anniversary. This represents the timelessness of love. If you want to give jewellery instead of paper or a clock, then gold pieces are best. If he’s sending you a bouquet of flowers, traditionally they should include pansies, carnations, gold or yellow roses. Pansies symbolise thoughtfulness, carnations are a symbol of passion and new love, and gold or yellow roses depict eternal love. The colours gold and yellow are symbolic of the first wedding anniversary.

HOW TO CELEBRATE YOUR FIRST ANNIVERSARY If you kept the top layer of your wedding cake, traditionally you eat it now. If your gift was tickets – celebrate on the evening of your anniversary with a show, a movie, dinner or a trip away. If the weather is good and it is the weekend, how about a picnic? You can use paper plates, paper cups and feast on all sorts of delicious treats.
