ello lovely readers and engaged couples! It’s my privilege to be Nubian Bride’s new editor and I’m delighted to play a part in helping you make arrangements for your big day. I hope we inspire you and help you make your dream wedding a reality. We’ve made a few changes to your favourite wedding magazine, which I hope you will enjoy. Look out for the new Trends page that features some of the hottest and most innovative local wedding ideas. We’ve also added a new Wedding Planner section to our Décor Theme pages. We’ve interviewed some of the best wedding planners in South Africa – all of these guys will go the extra mile for you. I particularly love the cover concept, which we’ve carried out in the Planning section, and the main fashion spread. It’s the ultimate wedding fantasy full of bight, happy colours – a whimsical take on the biggest day in most couple’s lives. We let our imagination take flight as we wanted to incorporate the joie de vivre of Spring with the magical nature of weddings. We took that sense of childhood wonder and happiness which being at a fair or theme park brings, and combined it with the ultimate step into adulthood: getting married. Since I got married recently, I know all too well the pressure that goes with planning a wedding. It’s over a year of hard work, compromises and trying to make everyone happy. But as scary as it can all be, it’s worth seeing it all come together so beautifully on the day! My most valuable piece of advice to spouses-to-be is to savour every second of their wedding day, and to not sweat the small stuff. Yes, it may be annoying that something didn’t come together as flawlessly as you’d hoped, but nobody knows this but you – so take a deep breath, a sip of champagne and smile! Enjoy it, the day will be over before you know it. So sit back, relax, take a breather away from everything else, grab your copy of Nubian Bride and let us help you dream a perfect dream for your wedding day!

THE MAGIC OF COLOUR There’s something miraculous about weddings – it’s the start of a shared promise of a life together, and the day you’ve been dreaming of for years! Your vision for your special day is magic only you can conjure, and you want everything to be perfect. Draw some enchanting inspiration from the lovely ladies of Bright Studio, Dalton & Bloom and Custo Photo. By Bright Studio

Planning

S

pring has sprung! It’s all around us in the cheerful flowers and the green grass that beckons, even in our clothes. Looking at the catwalks, big and bold 1970s florals are definitely back for spring and summer – but with a modern twist. So why not incorporate that vibrancy and effervescent bubbliness into your wedding, from your flowers to your stationery? It doesn’t necessarily have to be part of your fabric but imagine a bold and striking floral palette that makes your guests sit up and take notice. Picture a kaleidoscope of colours coming together in your ahead-of-the-trend stationery, tables dripping with lush blooms, gorgeous bright bouquets, and riots of colourful and delicate flowers decorating you and your bridesmaids’ hair. Make your guests feel like they’ve jumped on a magical merry-go-round that transported them to a world of colour. Think ruffles, feathers, sequins and exotic shades of aqua, orange and hot pink – nothing is off limits and everything is as big and beautiful as you want it to be.

Flowers

Strict symmetry and structure is definitely out when it comes to achieving this look in terms of floral design. The ombré look is still very big

and Karen Dalton of Dalton & Bloom created the same mood of fading and flowing for the floral arrangements. The key is to not use traditional toned-down wedding colours but to go for the beautiful bold blooms available in springtime colours: oranges, yellows, reds and hot pinks to deep violets. Differences in height of the arrangements will also add interest to your tables. Karen says, “Don’t be afraid of bright colours. When arranged correctly, they can bring a wonderful, vibrant energy to your event. Throw out the rule book, be brave and simply select blooms that excite you.” Another upside of choosing colourful blooms is that they can be less expensive than the white neutral flowers, especially during the ‘wedding seasons’. Karen explains her flower selection by saying, “I use the entire colour wheel and set out to create a rainbow effect with blooms, from bright yellow to deep plum, choosing more by colour than type!” Create drama and texture by including exotic-looking stems like bromelias that come in the most incredible colours. Another favourite for dramatic colour are celosias. Speak with your floral designer ahead of time if you want something unique at your wedding… Everyone loves working with a trendsetting bride! www.nubianbride.co.za |

Planning

Bouquets

If you’re using bold colours, a flamboyant bouquet is a must – just make it big! Choose an extra-length cascading arrangement or the more modern full and messy type bouquet. Let your personality shine through your flowers and inspire your guests with your brave choices. Remember, your bouquet will be in many of your photos so make it a statement piece.

Fashion

This look is definitely for the more adventurous bride and will speak volumes about who you are. It is loud, and proud of it! So don’t be afraid to go for a wild card when it comes to your wedding gown: think sequins (like the gorgeous gold sequin and chiffon gown by Biji on p.17), bold detailing (we love the white zipper number above by Spero Villioti) and do the same for your bridesmaids – add colour, texture and details like playful bows, ruffles or pleats (bridesmaids’ dresses above are by Spero Villioti). You can also add a twist by opting for statement jewellery pieces but remember the ‘either or’ rule and don’t overdo it! Either use the statement jewellery, or consider skin jewellery like what was used in this shoot on the models’ ears and bodies for some night-time glamour.

Cake

For the colourful theme, nothing less than a carnival-worthy cake will do. The upcoming trend for 2015 is looking very bright indeed when the Pantone colour of the year was announced as ‘Radiant Orchid’ – it is gorgeous and vibrant

Planning

and can be mixed with so many other colours. A mix of colour and patterning was used to make the cake a true pièce de résistance. A great tip is to ask the florist to add the same flowers used in the table arrangements onto the top of the cake, or even cascading down. It will form a lovely entity and look completely customised. The ‘satin-all-over’ look is also starting to phase out as brides are moving away from fondant finishes. TOP TIP Trending at the moment are buttercream cakes, with techniques like “scraping” the butter cream or adding in patterns.

DESIGNER STUDIO

Making dream dresses a reality Fashion designer Asanda Madyibi may have fallen into designing clothes, but with her natural talent, good eye and attention to detail it’s no surprise that celebrities are clamouring to be dressed by her. Passionate, down to earth and with plenty of creative flair, Asanda’s star just keeps shining! Claudia Pillay gets the low down on what it takes to succeed in this highly competitive field

What’s the biggest lesson you learned at Sun Goddess? It introduced to me dealing with, shall we say, “elite and pedantic clients”. One of the greatest lessons I learned was how to deal with people. As much as that gave me a good grounding, I still had to learn that the buck stops here, with me. It’s a whole different story when it’s your name on the door. Now I realise just how big a role accountability plays in my life. How did you get into wedding gowns? Wedding gowns were a natural progression for me, because for me custom making things is the same as working at the couture level, which is similar to the

24

wedding dress level. The couture level, like the wedding dress level, is where a client gives you a theme and you must produce a fairytale. Everyone wants to be an individual but you want to be a well-crafted, beautifully finished individual. You want your style to reflect who you are and you want to look good, have something that flatters your best assets and downplays your worst. I did my first wedding dress after I’d left Sun Goddess, for an ex-colleague. Then I did another white dress for a friend, and there was no turning back. What do you love most about doing wedding gowns? Designing a wedding gown is an incredible feeling! It doesn’t matter how rough the journey is, because when the bride sees the dress and can’t believe you did this, and even you can’t believe this is your work, it’s such an amazing moment. There is also something magical about fulfilling someone’s dreams for such a big day. I love that one day grandchildren are going to look at these

hat made you want to be a fashion designer? It wasn’t a conscious decision, it just happened. I knew I wanted to do something with art but when I got accepted for fashion design, I just went with it. It helped that I’d grown up with my granny’s sewing around me, so I knew how to do it properly. Studying fashion, I gradually fell in love with it as I thoroughly enjoyed all the exploring and experimenting. However, my first job was a drag as there wasn’t much creative expression – I just worked on men’s clothes. But I embraced my next job, at Sun Goddess, and there my love affair with fashion took flight! That’s where the fashion-is-art concept came alive for me and I could unleash my creative side.

photographs – so even 40 years later, the dress must still be timeless and gorgeous. There’s also a level of experimentation that keeps pushing me, as I have to put my ego aside – it’s not about me as a designer, it’s about giving the bride what she wants. Getting it right, that feeling of accomplishment and achievement, is just unbeatable!

I don’t want to do the average and in design that’s hard to do as you don’t want to be gimmicky or dramatic for the sake of being dramatic How would you describe your design style? I’d have to say I’m a great designer because of my versatility and because my style is so experimental. My style is also very hand-orientated and there’s lots of crafting. I don’t want to do the average and in design that’s hard to do as you don’t want to be gimmicky or dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. I recently met someone who said to me they’ve been watching me since I left Sun Goddess. They said, “I love that your style is always evolving, it’s the one thing that makes you unique – the fact that you’re always experimental and open to trying out new things.” That meant a lot to me as it shows that people are taking note of what I can do. What are the current must-have trends for brides? Fashion moves in cycles, whether it’s street wear or bridal. There’s always more than one trend at a time. Right now bridal fashion is very feminine, hence we’re totally in love with lace – it’s not going to let up soon. Also currently very big is the minimalist trend, but with a theme, for example Gatsby. It’s simple but with character and something more. I love that in SA we’re so open to experimentation – you can have a red lace wedding dress and

26

get away with it. We know how to make that work, for example we will add an Indian or a traditional African feel to it. What’s the ultimate wedding wow factor for you? It’s all about being an individual and bringing in your own personality. I just loved Kim Kardashian’s wedding dress. It was amazing, so very couture! Givenchy had done that range a few years back but it had never really translated into a wedding dress until Kim’s dress. It was sexy and romantic and so classy – everything a wedding dress should be. The craftsmanship was unbelievable and it was a well thought-out dress. What the best bit about designing for celebrity clients? The only difference in dealing with celebs is it’s like their wedding at every function, especially the evening ones. They want to be on trend and look forward-thinking, but they’re often conservative. When a celebrity wears your clothes, it’s a brand endorsement but also a sort of kinship as you have to be on the same wavelength. I particularly enjoy dressing Unathi Msengana because she’s been such a loyal client through the years and we’ve grown together. As her brand grows, so does mine.

SAY ‘YES’ TO A GIFT

REGISTRY

Registering for wedding gifts is a fun and enjoyable exercise – who doesn’t love the picking without the paying? Just remember, the items you pick here will be the building blocks for your everyday life! So here’s a bit of advice to help get the best gift registry possible and hopefully reign in a click-happy partner. By Princess Langa

A

wedding registry is more than just a list of wants – it represents the life a couple imagines together down to the smallest detail. The days of receiving two toasters are long over and thanks to the internet, most gift registries can be done online. But before you embark on that all-important decision on which silverware to use to cut your sirloin steak with, or which porcelain gravy boat will make your in-laws jealous, just remember there is an art to registering for those perfect must-have gifts.

She says in her experience couples were still adding classic kitchenware tools, appliances, tableware, quality bed linen and towels to their list. ‘‘However, these days couples who have already been living together like to upgrade to premium quality versions of the ‘classics’, or try something new like outdoor and picnic gear, wines and craft beer, or designer and quirky brands,” she says.

Fiona Hilton, head of registries at Yuppiechef.com, says the registry market has grown rapidly over the last 20 years in SA. “Only 10 years ago it was still seen as ‘taboo’ to have a wedding registry, whereas in Europe, the USA and other countries it’s been a regular part of the wedding planning process since the 1960s. ‘‘However, things have changed as couples realise wedding guests will want to buy them gifts for the home regardless, and they may as well ask for items they genuinely want and need,” says Fiona.

Do set up your registry early. Wedding planners advise this should be high up on your list of priorities. Don’t register at just one location. Spread it out. Choosing two or three places gives your family and friends a little more choice when it comes to shopping for you. Do register for a nice variety of gifts and spread them out across various price ranges. Don’t be shy. Don’t shrug off those time-honoured items. Sure you might not

wedding etiquette

PoPular registry items need a toaster but go ahead and get a juicer or blender. Do try to wait to use the presents that arrive before the wedding. As excited as you might be to test drive that gravy boat, be patient and rather break it out after the wedding day. Don’t ask for money outright but stage your request in a polite, subtle manner. Maybe try a little rhyme or poem – just so it softens the request a little. It also helps if you avoid using the word money or cash. Think along these lines: “If you’d like to help send us on way a financial contribution would make our day. But if you’d prefer to outfit our home, Yuppiechef or Boardmans is where you should roam.”

DeLonghi Icona Vintage Toaster

TOP TIP Give your guests an option, so opt for both a registry and asking for some cash. That way those who would feel uncomfortable with giving cash can get you a gift instead. Do be prompt with the thankful notes. Nobody likes an ungrateful couple. Ensure it’s thoughtful. Email and phone calls don’t count, this calls for going old-school. So yes, break out the fancy paper and get writing. DO... • add a good range of products in different price points to suit all budgets. • add enough gifts to give your guests enough choice. • keep your registry updated with new products all the time. • remember to put the store names and your registry details on your invitation so guests know where to go. DON’T... • just go for the seasonal/trendy stuff – you’ll appreciate the classics in a few years’ time! • shy away from big ticket items – guests often love to club together to buy you something really special, like a Kitchenaid mixer, so make sure you let your close group of pals know that it is an option. • forget to encourage your guests to buy off your registry so you get what you want, and not 10 platters or five toasters!

GREAT DEBATE

TO CHANGE OR NOT TO CHANGE... that is the question To paraphrase Shakespeare: “What’s in a name? After all, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet...” Nubian Bride’s editor, Claudia Pillay, and her fairly new husband, Mujahid Padayachy, go head to head over the issue of name changing and tell us how they resolved it

I

really love my husband and he is one of the best men I know. Kind, thoughtful, understanding and extremely generous with awesome legs, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for me. He also knows how to work the business end of a mop and is a dab hand at the washing! So while he’s a bit of a sports-crazy jock (my exact opposite) he’s still highly evolved. Which is why the battle of changing my name is not one I expected to fight. So when my reasonable, understanding, laid-back husband reverted to some caveman like behaviour, it was a surprise. All this sudden rearing up into an alpha-

32

male pose missed were the words, “Me Caveman, you Mrs Caveman!” It seems that after the wedding I was going to be Mrs Mujahid Padayachy, no questions asked. And while I was eager to wed and finally ready to check the ‘Mrs’ box, I knew I wasn’t ready to change my name. “Why should I?” I sulked like a teenager not allowed to go to the dance. So what if this is the conventional way? For more than three decades I was Claudia Pillay, journalist, reader, shopaholic, shoe lover and good friend to many – was I ready to throw that all in and become the unknown Mrs Padayachy? I wanted to join my life with this man and proudly stand next to I wanted to join my life with him as his wife, but did that mean I had to lose myself entirely? this man and proudly stand I considered double-barreling next to him as his wife, but but being Claudia Claire Pillaydid that mean I had to lose Padayachy (CCPP) was not an option. Somewhat passionately myself entirely?

GREAT DEBATE

I laid out my arguments – mainly that after more than 10 years as a journalist, I’d built up a suitable portfolio as Claudia Pillay and I didn’t want to lose it. Besides, the Pillay me had finally made the move to being an editor! That old me had worked hard to get here – why should the new Mrs Padayachy get all the glory? Not exactly the best argument but it was important to me. Adding salt to all of these wounds, climbing into the bureaucracy that is Home Affairs is no-one’s idea of a good time! I’d have to get a new ID, passport, driver’s licence, bank cards, plus change my name on all my numerous loyalty cards. After planning a wedding, a mini-moon (short honeymoon), dealing with end-of-year deadlines, plus finalising a five-week-long honeymoon in Asia – was this my next task? I even now shudder at the thought and selfishly proclaimed that if I lose this battle, I’m taking my husband with me and he has to stand behind me in every queue! I could see his main point, that when we have children, we should all have the same surname. I was also flattered with his honest and somewhat bewildered response to all my passionate arguments, “But baby, I just want the world to know that you’re my wife and that we’re a team.” That, combined with a dimpled grin and an exhilarating fistpumping “Team Padayachay!” had me laughing. Ironically, in the end it was all taken out of our hands, it seemed. When you register a marriage, unless you specify that you’re keeping your maiden name, it automatically changes to your husband’s! How very patriarchal. So while the system may have me as Mrs Padayachy, I continue to be known professionally as Ms Pillay and will, when the time comes, slowly change my name – like when I’m getting that new smart card ID or renewing my driver’s licence. But honestly, I’m proud to be Mrs Padayachy, even though I’m still surprised when I’m addressed as such. I guess I’ll have to revel in the frisson of schadenfreude when he gets called Mr Pillay when we go away on work trips or mini-breaks I’ve booked...

B

eing an open-minded young man of the 21st century, I feel I am more evolved than my father at the same HIS stage in his life. But when the issue came VIEW up with my fiancée of her changing her name to mine, I must say I reverted to a more traditional way of thinking. I’m a firm believer in most

modern views of society – on being accepting of different points of view and open to different things – but the caveman in me reared it’s rather ugly head the minute the topic came up. I had just automatically assumed she would change her name to mine and well, be happy about it! It was, after all, the way things were done. My point of view stemmed from old-school ways of men who like to think of the woman in their lives as “their own”. Yes, I’m proud to be married to such a wonderful woman and is it so wrong that I’d want the world to know that Ms Pillay is now Mrs Padayachy? We had taken the ultimate step, we had joined our lives (and names) because we were going to start a life together.

My point of view stemmed from old-school ways of men who like to think of the woman in their lives as “their own” There are so many admin issues to handle when it comes to changing your name but I feel it is a rite of passage we all have to go through. Or, rather, that it was something that women, specifically, had to go through when they get married. Being a traditionalist, I thought why mess with that? Let’s just say that my wife was a bit thrown off by this attitude as she had never seen this side of me and, to be honest, neither have I. Just issuing dictates and expecting them to be followed is not my style at all – and here I was doing exactly that! But to me the changing of my wife’s surname is part of marriage and it is expected. My wife, being very opinionated and independent, didn’t see it the same way. This was my introduction to married life and it was my first lesson that most things are a compromise with your partner – as it is not just ‘my life’ any more, it is ‘our life’, and decisions are made together for everything. So we chatted about it and came to the compromise that she would carry on using her maiden name for work and her married name for pretty much everything else, which to me seemed like a good compromise. I have realised that in the greater scheme of things, Claudia changing her name means nothing. She will still love me and as we get ready to welcome our first child into our new family, together we will provide a loving environment for the little guy to come into… providing he gets my name, of course [laughs]. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Heritage

‘I Do...’

Zulu meets Tsonga In every African culture, there are certain traditional procedures that need to be followed when a man wishes to marry. But what happens when the couple are descendants of the Tsonga, Tswana and Zulu cultures? Palesa and Sello Maake tell Nwabisa Ngumbela how they navigated their cultural differences to make their traditional wedding memorable

C

upid definitely had a hand in this couple’s initial meeting. They met at a Valentine’s event that Palesa Mboweni-Maake was hosting. Numbers were exchanged, and six months down the line Sello Maake-Ncube couldn’t wait any longer to propose. Sello’s family sent a letter to the Mbowenis, stating their son’s desire to marry their daughter. The lobola negotiations When a man of the Zulu culture has intentions of taking a wife, he consults his parents who give their blessing and then consult the rest of the clan. The patriarchs make plans to meet with the family of the woman. This is called ukulula – the introduction between the two families. The bride’s family then asks their daughter if she knows the young man in question, and when she acknowledges him the families start with lobola negotiations. However, in Palesa and Sello’s case, this was done a little differently. “My two cousins and I were covered in doeks (cloths), and my husband’s family was told to point out the woman their son wanted to marry. They pointed to one of my cousins and we laughed as all of them were convinced my cousin was Sello’s fiancée,” she says. This was done to break the ice and provide some humour – a good bonding point for both families. When a lobola agreement is made, a goat is slaughtered in celebration. This is also done to introduce the woman to the ancestors. After this modest celebration the families depart, to meet again after a few weeks. Then

the woman is taken to the soon-to-be groom’s home where she is put through a series of tests to see if she is the perfect fit for the family. This is a crucial stage of the process because it is this behavioural test that decides the fate of the woman with the love of her life. Putting her to the test The test duration is usually seven days. The young woman is sent along with a matriarch from her family, which the Tsonga call insulu, meaning angel. This woman’s responsibility is to see that the prospective bride does not embarrass her family by waking up late or acting lazy. She must abide by the older woman’s rules or she risks being sent home by her soon-to-be in-laws. During this phase, she is not allowed to communicate with her mother-in-law; all communication is done through her insulu. This is to show respect for the in-laws. By the end of this period, if the groom’s family is not satisfied, they send her home back to her mother to be ‘taught manners’. This is a polite way of saying she does not meet their standards and they ask for their lobola to be given back. However, if the bride-to-be has proven to be a perfect fit for the family, they proceed with lobola. The final celebration When the bridal price has been paid in full, the matriarchs of the bride’s family take the bride to the groom’s family home. At this point the bride is also accompanied by amahlonisa – bridesmaids. When they get to the groom’s family, only the older women are allowed to go in.

35

HERITAGE

Amahlonisa and the bride are ordered to sit outside the groom’s homestead, until they have been ‘welcomed’. The welcome is done in the form of money. The money is also expected to be accompanied with the finest brandy and traditional beer. Once the groom’s family is satisfied with the ‘welcome’, she and her bridesmaids are allowed to crawl inside on all fours. Walking is forbidden until the bride is fully accepted into the groom’s family. The woman is taken to a bedroom where she sits with a doek covering her eyes. The older women of both the families give her advice on how a man is treated. She is also given a new name, as she is no longer a girl but a woman, and a fully-fledged member of her new clan. Then the real celebrations begin. The older women sing traditional wedding songs and do the Xibelana, a traditional Xitsonga dance performed at special occasions. The Zulu people also celebrate by doing their cultural dance. Just as Palesa and Sello so neatly navigated all the traditional aspects of their big day, so too have they merged their lives and families into one. After all, with her good looks and business acumen setting off his chiselled features and silver tongue, they’re a winning combination.

BLANKETS Peter Tlholoe, author of Faces of a Blanket and a director at Aranda Blankets, explained the cultural significance of blankets when, people from Tsonga and Zulu cultures marry. “The Tsonga and Pedi are the only two groups who don’t have a cultural blanket of their own. However, following the groom’s tradition the blanket handover ceremony starts at the Umabo. “It is the bride’s responsibility to know how many blankets she has to give to the groom’s family. She will hand blankets to her new in-laws and family members. The groom is the last one to receive a blanket.”

REAL WEDDINGS REAL WEDDINGS

Where and how did you meet? Kgomotso: We met at Thato’s 21st birthday party; I went with a friend of mine. Thato interrogated me about my hair, which was apparently too gorgeous to be mine. We exchanged numbers and met up a few weeks later for numerous long picnics – the rest, as they say, is history. Thato: We met a few months before my birthday; Kgomotso doesn’t remember that. How did he propose? We were on holiday at a Game Lodge and Spa in Bela Bela. It was a very intimate and private moment. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. K: The theme for the wedding was ‘love is’; we wanted the wedding to be soft, romantic, whimsical and dreamy but still natural with no bling. It was a celebration of our love, with our closest family and friends. T: Kgomotso is a stickler for order and structure, so everyone knew their role and Oakfield wedding venue did not disappoint. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Absolutely nothing. It was exactly what we wanted. What was the highlight of your day? K: The wedding ceremony. Walking down the aisle on my father’s arm, seeing my mom’s teary eyes, walking towards the man that I absolutely adore and being surrounded by friends and family. The vows www.nubianbride.co.za |

REAL WEDDINGS

were also amazingly personal and special. It felt like the start of a new chapter in our beautiful love story. T: The reception, where we showed off our dance moves. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? K: It just felt right. T: It was a proud moment for me. It was also a humbling moment when individuals said we are an inspiration to both the young and older guests. Where did you go on honeymoon? We chose East Africa as our honeymoon destination because Thato loves the African continent. We chose to move the honeymoon to our one-year wedding anniversary because we were going on a work-related trip just after the wedding. What advice would you give to a soon-to-be bride? Plan the wedding together, it’s a great way to bond. Be kind and considerate of each other’s ideas; the wedding day is just one day, you have your whole marriage ahead of you. & 80

Where and how did you meet? We met four years ago when I was doing a work presentation, but nothing ever came of it. After our initial meeting, Desmond was moved into my immediate team by our company. Even so, our relationship remained platonic until November 2012. Then it changed from professional to highly personal! How did he propose? Desmond’s initial wedding proposal had to be rescheduled; the ring was not ready at the time. As a result he had to make some compromises on the final day. He made me pack a bag without a word as to what he was up to, but I suspected he had the ring. We both got dressed up in our evening wear and he took me to a surprise destination – Signature, where we had our first date. I didn’t know if he was going to propose or not and couldn’t wait any more, so I just asked him. He told me he didn’t bring the ring because his plan didn’t pan out the way he wanted it to. But when I turned around he was on one knee. I cannot even remember what he said because I was so overwhelmed and happy. Please tell us shortly about your wedding day. We didn’t want a ‘traditional’ wedding. We wanted to be sure our wedding was a reflection of who we are, and we wanted to connect with everyone there. We both love the energy and passion of the city, so when we saw Randlords, we simply knew that that was where we were going to host our reception. Rhema, our spiritual home, was where the ceremony was held. We also chose to have a small wedding with only close friends and family, and had to convince our families to buy into the idea of only 80 guests. And thankfully they did. We both wanted simple, clean lines at the wedding: from the cake to the table settings it had to be classy. Even though there were one or two glitches on the day (my wedding car didn’t arrive so my dad had to drive me in Desmond’s car) everything was exactly what we had hoped it would be and we got the experience we both www.nubianbride.co.za |

REAL WEDDINGS wanted. I can honestly say that we thoroughly enjoyed our wedding – the perfect way to start the marriage we wanted to create. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I would have loved Desmond’s late dad to have been there to witness our day, but his mom presented us with an incredible portrait of his dad on the day, which simply added another unforgettable touch to an already incredible day. What was the highlight of your day? Our vows – they were not the standard rehearsed vows and each of our vows were different. Our pastor combined everything we had said we wanted our marriage to be about and ensured that we committed to it on our special day, which really made it unique and special for us. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? I still feel like the luckiest woman alive as he always treats me like a precious gift. Where did you go on honeymoon? We had our traditional wedding the next day. Two days later we flew off to Madrid, Spain, followed by Barcelona and then Lisbon, Portugal, followed by a week at the beach in The Algarve, Portugal. The honeymoon was an amazing way to wind down and enjoy each other. What advice would you give to a soon-to-be bride? Remember the wedding day is one day – your marriage has to last a lifetime. Make this day a symbol of what you’d like your life together to be about. This is not just about you, it’s about the man you are about to make your husband and it’s about your families becoming one. With 22 years experience, we’re experts at recognising a perfect match

Jeremy Kent, Jewel Africa’s bridal specialist gives a few tips on finding the perfect rings. Engagement rings and wedding bands are declarations of great love which will be looked at for many years to come. You didn’t rush the process of finding your perfect match, and neither should the decision be, in choosing the perfect ring.

“One size does not fit all” Choosing the right ring for your finger is a lot like choosing the right swimsuit for your figure. When trying on engagement rings or wedding bands, you will quickly discover that not every style suits your hand. I always consider finger size and shape, and recommend a ring style which enhances both hand and ring.

Which ring style suits my personality and lifestyle? This is a really important factor to consider, as rings reflect both the wearer’s individuality, lifestyle and taste. Whether it is a beautiful classic solitaire, or a slightly more modern halo design, there is a style befitting every need. Some modern brides and grooms prefer to custom create their masterpieces by making a selection of a beautiful diamond, and designing their perfect setting.

We make your engagement unforgettable by helping to mark it with an experience of joy, trust and celebration. We celebrate all life’s precious moments by becoming your lifelong partners in jewellery.

How much is enough? So many couples ask this question, and my answer is the same every time. You can’t put a price to a promise, so your decision should be rather based on spending what feels right. Your wedding rings are a sign of everlasting love and commitment, and the quality of these should match that sentiment.

REAL WEDDINGS REAL WEDDINGS

Where and how did you meet? Phumlani and I met in September 2007 at my cousin’s wedding (he’s friends with my cousin) but we only started dating in November 2012. How did he propose? Phumlani was very nervous that day. I remember at lunch he even dropped and broke a plate at the restaurant. Later on we were supposed to go out for dinner where he’d planned to propose. Unfortunately we had too much to eat at lunch so we ordered room service instead. He proposed during our light dinner, popping the question out of nowhere. Please tell us shortly about your wedding day. It was the most beautiful day ever, emotional and filled with so much love! If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Maybe we’d invite a few more guests. What was the highlight of your day? For a rather romantic Phumlani, putting the ring on Lebo’s finger meant the most to him. Lebo says, “My highlight of the day was hearing the priest announce us as Mr and Mrs Kubheka. It was very special.” How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? We were both excited and happy that the day had finally come and that we were now married. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Where and how did you meet? We met at a mutual friend’s house. How did he propose? We were relaxing at his house and then he surprised me by giving me a present. When I opened it there was a ring inside and he explained it was a promise ring. I was thrilled when he asked me to be his wife! Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was a magical day and I really enjoyed it. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I wanted it to go on for longer. I definitely would have had the DJ stay on until later in the night. What was the highlight of your day? It would have to be driving to the ceremony in the Rolls Royce! It’s such a luxurious car. I loved every second of my journey. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was scary but exciting. What advice would you give to a soon-to-be bride? I found it is key that you appoint good wedding planners – I could not have done it without them. They were very professional and knew exactly what I wanted. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Wedding wonderland Feast your eyes on the latest trends and designs – from feathers to extravangant centrepieces, we feature everything you need to help you create your dream wedding

DÉCOR

The Aleit Group, a class act in wedding planning

Welcome to our brand-new feature on wedding coordinators, where we profile three outstanding professionals. The Aleit Group has the experience to organise world-class events and nothing is too much trouble for them

W

hat are the hottest wedding trends right now? The wedding industry is quite competitive and being on par with the latest trends sets you apart from your competitors – that’s why we are on trend every time. Couples are always looking for the next best thing, and want to keep up with what is new and exciting. Colour: Don’t be afraid to play with colour – be it soft shades or bold pops with metallic accents. Classic white will always be very popular but colour is gaining a much stronger presence. Embellishment: We’re seeing a lot of weddings with contemporary edge, vintage craftsmanship and detail. We aren’t just talking about colour here, but classic design periods such as Baroque and Victorian are reborn to include a mix of modern textures, textiles and unique elements. Food: To incorporate something exceptional, go with food stations. They offer a more up-scale version of the traditional buffet, catering to a variety of different tastes. Digital: Technology provides endless options for registries, wedding websites, and event RSVPs online (but don’t forego printed wedding invitations). This provides a more streamlined process. The most important piece of advice you can give someone who’s getting married

is… to use a wedding coordinator to take over the nitty-gritty planning of the wedding. They can point you in the right direction regarding your budget and everything from florists to photographers. They will also deal with potential disasters on the big day. The most common mistake couples make when planning their wedding is… forgetting what a wedding really is all about. It is the day that you as bride and groom get to celebrate your love and start the rest of your lives together. The biggest wedding wow factor you’ve seen was… a gorgeous bride, dazzled in glitz, arriving in a helicopter that landed on a heart-shaped bed of white rose petals next to a picturesque dam. As the helicopter descended, all the rose petals flew through the air. The bride then climbed into a vintage carriage with stately white horses and was escorted to the ceremony area, where she was accompanied down the aisle by nine elegant bridesmaids. The biggest wedding you’ve done was for… a lovely Angolan couple who’s wedding took place at the gorgeous Cavalli Estate. Guests were flown in from across the globe to attend the lavish affair and were treated like royalty at the numerous pre- and post-events. And what was the budget? We can say it went high into the R2 millions, but including accommodation, flights, transfers and additional events, well over R5 million.

What is the strangest thing you’ve seen at a wedding? At one of our recent weddings, as guests became merrier throughout the evening, the coordinators had their hands full with groomsmen throwing a table into a dam. They started with a spoon, then a tray and finally a very expensive designer Italian table. Another strange request was a bride asking for a real lamb at her couple photo shoot at the last minute.

The Aleit Group is South Africa’s premier wedding and events coordination consultancy. The company also includes The Aleit Academy, Aleit Travel, A Place, Aleit Music and Entertainment, aMedia, A-Tek, Stir Food, and Shake and Serve, fully encompassing the catering, bar, staffing, training, travel, venue management, film and graphic design disciplines. This affords us the option to provide the very best, personalised service to every event we coordinate. By paying attention to the finest detail, we create an ambiance that is chic with understated elegance and unique styling – a look and feel tailored to your specific wishes. www.nubianbride.co.za |

hat are the hottest wedding trends right now? People are finding there is a delicate balance between traditional and contemporary. That said, it is important to remember marriage is an age-old institution and we need to keep some sacred and traditional elements, but find fresh and new interpretations that work well for the modern bride. Some of the options currently being considered is casual lounge versus formal seating, and food stations versus smarter sit-down dinners. The most important piece of advice you can give someone who’s getting married is… Use a wedding planner who is organised and creative, understands the pitfalls, utilise creative and ingenious concepts, and who can organise and orchestrate the event to ensure the day is perfect in every way. The most common mistake couples make when planning their wedding is… Couples create unrealistic expectations when they look at social media sites such as Pinterest and magazine layouts showing great wedding concepts. And often couples have unrealistic budgets for large guest lists.

The biggest wedding wow factor you’ve seen was… A wedding on a Free State farm that was held under thorn trees, with exposed light bulbs, bustle back chairs and vintage décor. The biggest wedding you’ve done was for… 5,000 guests. It was interesting. What was the strangest thing you’ve seen at a wedding? An ex-girlfriend that was also a bridesmaid.

After 15 years in the business, we pride ourselves on still being a boutique-sized, signature event company specialising in creating functions with a difference. Our strengths lie in bespoke birthday bashes that keep guests talking, product launches and award evenings that inspire, unforgettable anniversary celebrations for those who know what is important, and fairytales come true for any wouldbe bride who walks through our doors. We’re diverse and experienced, so we can offer the complete package – be it for corporate events or private functions, Otto delivers impeccably, always. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Planners of distinction: The Wedding and Lifestyle Emporium The exceptional team of Guy Granger and Anton Rautenbach from The Wedding and Lifestyle Emporium know how to create unforgettable experiences that stand out from the rest

W

hat are the hottest wedding trends right now? Being an individual, and not following the crowd. When we design a wedding, our focus is always on the uniqueness of the couple we are working with – they literally become our creative inspiration. Every detail showcases who they are, and the lifestyle they lead. The most important piece of advice you can give someone who’s getting married is… Keep your focus on what is really important – saying your vows is the highlight of the day, so be physically, emotionally and spiritually prepared. We have noticed that many couples put most of their energy into planning the reception, and while the celebration is wonderful, we believe it should not take centre stage in the run-up to the big day. This is why it is essential to work with a good planner who can take care of the details, while you concentrate on the major things. The most common mistake couples make when planning their wedding is… Trying to do it without professional help. It is a common mistake to assume that employing a wedding designer is expensive, but we actually save money for our clients. The biggest wedding wow factor you’ve seen was… Fireworks set off at sea in Mauritius as the couple cut their cake.

The biggest wedding you’ve done was for… Malenga and Patricia Machel – there were 800 guests in a marquee in Xilembene, Mozambique. And what was the budget? It’s a secret. What was the strangest thing you’ve seen at a wedding? Jelly Tots fashioned into a grapevine with wire hanging over the wine glasses – it wasn’t one of ours! The Wedding and Lifestyle Emporium is the only truly bespoke wedding and lifestyle design company in the world. It is a studio that not only facilitates the planning, coordination, creative process and direction of your wedding, but also personally designs and creates your special day with exceptional creativity and innovation. It is with this forward thinking that we have changed the way weddings are done. When we design your wedding, we will choose the venue with you, design your wedding invitations, the wedding-day stationery, the dress, the suit, the ceremony, the flowers and décor, the food, the entertainment, the gifts and the cake... it is all created to showcase your lifestyle. We offer this personalised service so that you can focus on being physically, emotionally and spiritually prepared for saying your vows on the big day. We create beauty, and you are our inspiration. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Tips for getting married in this area • KwaZulu-Natal is best for winter weddings, because of relatively warmer weather. It has a warm subtropical climate, and summers are gorgeously hot and moist. • Rainy season: Summer • Why not extend the wedding celebrations by heading over to The Elephant Coast (Maputaland), an ‘ecotourism mecca’. Elephant, rhino, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Hluhluwe, whales and turtles are some of the things associated with the Elephant Coast. www.nubianbride.co.za |

To make your honeymoon truly memorable takes a little extra planning. While most ordinary honeymoon destinations are charming, our list of the unusual will make your honeymoon unforgettable. By Sulaiman Philip

HOnEymOOn TRAVEL

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC What to do: Prague offers romantic river boat rides, a rich cultural history or a chance to walk hand in hand through its cobbled streets. This is a city built on l’amour. The spinning apostle figurines of the Astronomical Clock, the Gothic Charles Bridge or the gardens of the city’s castles and villas will make every excursion into Prague’s heart a starry-eyed stroll. Profess your love while enjoying butterfly kisses at the Fata Morgana greenhouse. Wander over the Charles Bridge to the Kampa neighbourhood and find the bridge behind the Čertovka mill. For years couples have been attaching padlocks to the bridge as a symbol of their everlasting love. The Mucha Museum is testament to the enduring love affair between artist Mucha and his wife, Maruška. After his death she dedicated her life to preserving his work. Touring the collection of his work, sensual portrayals of women crowned with haloes, you can swear love is all around. End your visit at the statue of Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha – legend says love sealed with a kiss here is eternal.

CUZCO, PERU

What to do: Cuzco, 3,300 metres up in the Peruvian Andes, is a honeymoon destination for the adventurous and culturally curious. Continuously inhabited for 5,000 years, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a mix of Incan and Spanish influences. Five minutes of pure oxygen, provided in the better hotels, or a cup of the region’s famous

Where to stay: Chateau Mcely, Romantik Hotel Uraka Why we love it: Prague is a city made for romantic strolls. Work up an appetite meandering its cobbled streets, visiting its markets and discovering 1,100 years of history. Or steal a kiss under one of its bridges as you float down the Vitava. Even the name of the waterway dissecting the city evokes romance.

coca tea is enough to alleviate any altitude sickness. Cuzco is a city of highlights. Watch the sun rise over the city from the walls of the Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Or have a late start before touring Incan and Spanish influenced architectural treasures. There is Santo Domingo Monastery and the sacred Koricancha – Courtyard of Gold – with its gold-lined walls. The city’s gilded Catholic Cuzco Cathedral is worth a tour, if only to see its colossal painting of the Last Supper, with the Peruvian staple cuy (guinea pig) as the main course. Begin an evening’s adventures with a glass of pisco – fermented grapes mixed with lemon, egg whites and Angostura bitters – at one of the bars or restaurants on the central Plaza de Armas. If you tire of the city, take the 10-hour train ride aboard the luxurious, romantic Andean Explorer through mountains, and go back in time. The journey to mythical Lake Titicaca is an unforgettable experience of marvellous food and cosy cabins. Where to stay: Belmond Palacios Nazarenas or Belmond Hotel Monasterio. Why we love it: Cuzco is a city of Incan markets stocked with amazing textiles, dressed llamas and unique experiences. www.nubianbride.co.za |

What to do: “I do” is the beginning of a great life journey. If you are a couple looking to begin your journey together with an adrenalinefuelled honeymoon, then the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park on Palawan in the Philippines is where you should head. Spend your first night in the rustic hut on Starfish Island. Watch as the tide swallows the island till all that is left is the hut on stilts in the ocean, and you are left feeling like the only two people in the world. PUERTO PRINCESA, PHILIPPINES

SANTORINI, GREECE

What to do: From the volcanic black-and-red sand beaches to the steps zigzagging down to the ports of Oía and Firá, the island of Santorini is the home of romance, as it has been for centuries. Santorini is known for its white and blue domed churches and whitewashed towns situated precariously close to the edge of the island’s cliffs. Climb to the town of Manolas just for the view of the sparkling pool of turquoise water carved out by the volcano that created the chain of islands in 1650 BC. On Santorini you can swim on a beach the colour of love or laugh at your better half as you cling to a donkey climbing the steep cliffs of the island. The island is famous for the beauty of its sunsets; couples looking for a romantic end to their day can watch the rosy glow of the Sea of Crete while enjoying wine produced on the island. A boat ride to Nea Kamini will bring you to the rim of the volcano that shaped the island. Despite being active, you can sit together on a bench at the lip and watch steam rise, giving the sunset a beautiful ethereal quality. Where to stay: Perivolas, Mystique Why we love it: It’s easy to be blinded by the beauty of the island, its whitewashed cave houses or the scent of bougainvillea that hangs in the air. The appeal of Santorini lies in the many treasures – extraordinary wines, sandy beaches and archaeological sites – that make it truly special.

BUSH ROMANCE Having managed to steer clear of overcommercialisation, honeymooners will delight in Zambia’s true bush experience, without compromising on luxury. By Julia Mafcher

I

t’s one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls, that attracts most visitors to Zambia. Living up to its local name Mosi-Oa-Tunya, meaning the smoke that thunders, this stunning spectacle of the Zambezi plunging over the escarpment with a thunderous roar is even more special when sharing it with your loved one. Just eight minutes away from this impressive sight is the fivestar David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa. With a location to rival many, right on the Zambezi River, you’ll wake up and go to sleep to the sounds of the cascading falls and soothing bush noises. The décor and design of the David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa is quintessentially safari-style with elements of raw stone, wood and earth glamorised by gold, bronze, copper and ivory. With its closeness to nature, private balcony, and the silkiest, softest linen you’ve ever felt, you’ll find it hard to leave your room (it is your honeymoon, after all). However, it will be worth it if you do. Wild animals roam freely in the surrounding Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, and if you’re lucky enough you may catch a glimpse of

elephants crossing the river as they enter and exit the neighbouring countries at their leisure. There are a range of other activities, including game drives (great spotting guaranteed), helicopter flips over the falls for the less faint hearted, and sunset cruises aboard the very popular, exquisite Lady Livingstone. Sundowners on the river are a highlight for many travellers. A honeymoon without spa treatments? Well, that’s just not right. And this is no run-of-the-mill spa. The Spa and Wellness Centre was the 2014 recipient of the World Luxury Safari Spa Award for the African continent, so you know you’re in for a real treat. Treatments include anti-ageing facials, hydrotherapy, marine algae body wraps, and numerous massages ranging from Swedish and deep tissue to traditional Zambian techniques. A couple’s massage is as romantic as can be. Another high priority when on honeymoon is the cuisine. The wedding is over, so no need for drastic diets any more. Kalai Restaurant in the main lodge offers divine meals in a traditional setting. From local delicacies to mouthwatering Afro-Arabian fusion dishes, you’ll find something to please your taste buds. The Lodge’s sun deck, overlooking the Zambezi, takes al fresco dining to a whole new level and offers true gastronomic delights. Sit back, relax, and sip on deliciously fruity cocktails. That’s the most work you’ll have to do on your trip. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Lose yourself in some island magic – the Seychelles is the perfect place to relax and unwind with your new spouse

T

he Seychelles Islands need little introduction as the perfect venue for a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary or just an impromptu romantic break. For many years, just the name ‘Seychelles’ has conjured up magical images of a necklace of beautiful islands, lost to the world and time itself, where sapphire seas conspire with silver sands and emerald palms to offer the very best in romantic experiences. When you add to the mix the innate romantic ambiance that holds sway over Seychelles’ 115 islands, the natural friendliness of their tiny 87,000-strong population, and the grand diversity of experiences the islands offer, it’s easy to see why a Seychelles romantic holiday is so high

Top of the list must be the fact that the Seychelles Islands offer such diversity – not only in the islands themselves (74 low-lying coral atolls and 41 steep granitic Inner Isles), but also in their flora and fauna, ethnicity, architecture, cuisine, traditions and activities. Home to the unique Vallée de Mai, purported by many to be the site of the original Garden of Eden, it is little wonder that lovers are inspired to take their vows and wed in this gentle and romantic Indian Ocean atmosphere. Marriage and/or honeymoon packages are offered by several leading travel agencies, ensuring that your wedding day or honeymoon can be as blissfully romantic and unique as you can conjure in your wildest dreams. A selection of hotels, both large and

HONEYMOON TRAVEL small, as well as a choice of discreet island hideaways for your honeymoon will intensify your intimacy as you lazily soak up your first glorious days and nights together. Sip exotic tropical cocktails against the backdrop of crimson sunsets. Visit the island of La Digue where time stands still and bicycles and oxcarts hold sway on the pathways to dream beaches such as Anse Source D’Argent. Quietly stroll in the Vallée de Mai where the legendary coco-de-mer nut grows high on ancient palms. Dine tête à tête with your feet in the sand on uncrowded beaches. Try your hand at dancing the moutia, whose sensuous rhythms beckon from the flicker of a beach fire beneath a lover’s moon. Be swept off your feet by the breathtaking beauty of the world’s most stunning islands that offer you diversity, a carefree lifestyle and the services of dedicated professionals whose attention to detail will leave you with the freedom to enjoy the romantic experience of a lifetime.

HONEYMOON TRAVEL

Sho’t left for romance

South Africans are spoilt for choice when it comes to local travel. When you’re looking for honeymoon destinations, there’s no shortage of romantic hideaways to choose from. By Princess Langa

I

t doesn’t matter if you’ve got your heart set on a bush, sea or mountain romantic escape, the fact is you’re almost guaranteed to find sunshine somewhere. So in a bid to make things a little easier for you, here are some ideas on where you can go to enjoy optimum romance and relaxation.

Waterberg, Limpopo

What to do: Waterberg in Limpopo is a vast natural wonderland of ancient mountains and a rich tapestry of biodiversity. This mountainous landscape is set against the immense open spaces which makes this a very romantic and a truly African experience. Wander into the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere. It’s almost the same size as the Kruger National Park and it gives you close encounters with amazing wildlife and spectacular views. It’s the perfect backdrop for a sunset picnic. Best of all, Waterberg is home to luxuriant hot mineral springs – nature’s Jacuzzi, so to speak – and it’s a great way to relax, especially with a bottle of bubbly. Where to stay: Clifftop Lodge, www.clifftoplodge.co.za Why we love it: It’s wild. Tranquil. Beautiful.

Hermanus, Western Cape What to do: The snazzy seaside town on the southern coast of the Western Cape is filled with green mountains and deep blue waters. But there’s more to this little treasure trove than just lying on the beach and sipping on sundowners. Hermanus is best known for whale watching. Even the casual observer can watch from the benches along the cliff paths while a keen observer can watch the whales from the best view: a boat ride along the coastline. October and November are the best times to spot whales but you can also see them in May during mating season. Get the adrenaline pumping by experiencing a surreal one-on-one with the ocean’s greatest predator: the Great White Shark. There are several shark cage diving operators in Gansbaai, near Hermanus. Not recommended for the faint-hearted but it’s an incredible way to make some unforgettable honeymoon memories. No trip to the Western Cape is complete without a little vineyard touring! Try the Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Route or the Hamilton Russel Vineyard, which is the oldest winery in the valley. Breathtaking locations, great wine and a wonderful way to relax with your sweetheart. Boost the romance barometer with a trip to Kammabaai, also known as ‘Lover’s Cove’. This area has great waves and close by is Langbaai, known by locals as the ‘secret beach’ with a private swimming spot beneath the cliffs. Where to stay: Grootbos Garden Lodge, www.grootbos.com Why we love it: What’s not to love? Sea, sand, wine and sundowners.

White River and Hazyview, Mpumalanga What to do: Mpumalanga boasts some of South Africa’s most stunning views, and what better way to get close to your new spouse than to take in the majesty of Mother Nature together. One must-experience trip is God’s Window in Mpumalanga, named so because of the awe-inspiring views. Use the road-trip time to bond with your beloved, the drive is worth it – soak up the magic of rolling green hills, fields of flowers and the waterfalls. To really escape and get away from the maddening crowd, head over to Highgrove House, an 18th-century colonial farmstead that offers five-star country living. Surrounded by jacaranda trees, it offers colonial ambiance and great cuisine. The Orchard Spa offers the perfect setting to restore and revitalise energy and balance while the Kruger Park (20 minutes away) is a great place and the country’s most famous game reserve – you have to see what the fuss is about. Where to stay: Highgrove House, www.highgrove.co.za Why we love it: Because in this remarkable setting, Highgrove offers private romantic dining, either on the verandah of your suite with lanterns, in the quaint bar, or at the swimming pool – very romantic under the stars surrounded by lanterns. The dinner comes with a back massage – and dessert is served in the room.

Nature’s Valley, Garden Route What to do: As little or as much as you like! The Garden Route isn’t just a road to your destination, it’s also very much a destination in itself – one that involves a little bit of everything from wine routes to mountains, oceans and forests. The choice is yours! Nature’s Valley might not be as popular as towns such as Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, but it’s all the more reason to escape to this hidden little gem. This coastal enclave is also part of the Tsitsikamma National Park and is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. We suggest you visit Tranquillity B&B, which was voted the best honeymoon destination in South Africa for four years in a row by The Bride’s Choice Awards. Tranquility B&B is where the ocean and the forests meet in magnificent splendour, and you can really relax and take in your amazing surroundings. Soak up sun and get some relaxation into your soul as you enjoy some of the most spectacular beaches. You can also watch the dolphins playing in the surf or the breaching whales celebrating new life. If you are feeling more energetic, hit one of the magnificent hiking trails that offer unrivalled views of sea, forest, waterfalls and lagoons. For wild-animal lovers, there are regular bush buck and bush pig sightings in the village, or you can go leopard spotting by trying to find one of these elusive big cats that hide out in the forest. There’s also bird watching, kayaking and fishing. Where to stay: Tranquility B&B, www.tranquilitylodge.co.za Why we love it: Like the name suggests, peace and serenity is close at hand. You can fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing, interspersed with the indigenous garden’s singing birds and trickling water feature. The finest linen and soft fluffy towels makes you feel at home in this little bit of paradise that you can easily lose yourself in.
