Dear Readers, In case you missed it, an invisible sculpture by Italian artist Salvatore Garau recently sold for $18,000. In the words of the artist, “the sculpture is intended to be displayed in a 5x5 foot square… even if you can’t see it, it does exist, just not in material form.” The name of the nonexistent art piece? “I am.” The buyer feels it’s a good investment as there will be future buyers of beautiful invisible masterpieces. The question is, what was the seller thinking. Seems a bit risky introducing artwork that no one can appreciate and, other than his certificate of authenticity, everyone can replicate. It’s art because he says it’s art, and he’s hoping people buy into that, thus establishing it as art. A modern-day example of the emperor without clothes. The past few decades and specifically the past few years has seen an ever-growing movement of rephrasing words, terms and descriptions so that they can be used to obtain power and at times for the exact opposite. Words like peace, gender, activism, diversity, public safety and parenthood are freely used to promote war, lust, vandalism, cancel culture, control and ending the life an unborn child. It’s starting to seem that falsehood isn’t a means to an end, it’s the end itself. Once there’s no longer an objective starting point for language and ideas, then all that’s needed is a great PR team to repackage it for the masses
to follow. Consider - almost all current discussion on these topics were at the extreme fringe a mere 5 years ago. Indeed, this isn’t something new - Communist Russia had a monster propaganda machine that literally controlled the information its citizens were able to consume. They also had a newspaper promulgating their approved information. Its name? “Pravda”, truth. This isn’t to say that as Yidden we need to call out every falsehood we see being promoted. We do however need to have utmost conviction when pushing back against these frauds in areas affecting our ability to learn Torah and fulfill Hashem’s Mitzvos. The above also connects to man’s original falsehood; the world doesn’t have a creator. This was worded with layers of sophisticated philosophical ideas which nevertheless don’t address the basic question -where did the first cause come from. This lie had the same benefits as today; it removed objective responsibility from the individual so that they may pursue cannibalism, selfishness, power and control over others. As descendants of Avraham Avinu, the first light unto the nations, who went against the false G-ds of his time, we need to continue carrying the torch of truth showing the world the beauty of the eternal nation of Israel whose glory will rise one final time with the coming of our righteous redeemer. Wishing you a wonderful and meaningful Shabbos, Shalom

Kesser Torah Graduates Inaugural Shiur
W
ith much Siyata d’Shamaya, Mesivta Kesser Torah graduated its first 12th-grade class of eighteen bochurim on June 7th. Families gathered together for a scrumptious seudah and meaningful speeches to mark the completion of four years of growth for the mesaymim. Students listened to speeches from Rabbi Avrohom Feldheim (Menahel), Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim
(Rosh Mesivta), Rabbi Moshe Dovid Robinson (Principal), and Rabbi Mordechai Weissmann (Curriculum Coordinator). The speakers highlighted how the talmidim should see themselves as the “bechor” of the yeshiva and how they should never forget that the kol Torah emanating from the mesivta is a legacy they helped create. In addition to receiving their diplomas, each bochur was presented with a sefer and personalized messages from
their rebbeim from throughout their four years in mesivta. Additionally, two students- Rafi Rose and Moshe Shmuel Leder, addressed their classmates and expressed their appreciation for their rebbeim and hanhala. The evening concluded with a message from Rabbi Chaim Schwartz, proud father of a graduate and member of the Board of Directors, regarding the history of Kesser Torah and a charge to the talmidim to be repre-
sentatives of their mesivta for years to come. About a third of the bochurim will be part of an inaugural shiur of roughly twenty talmidim in Kesser Torah’s new Bais Medrash, under the leadership of Rav Nosson Newman, next year. The remaining two-thirds will be in yeshivos throughout Eretz Yisroel, Lakewood, and Monsey.

ecreational water users should exercise caution at three areas in Baltimore County due to potential contamination, officials say. Baltimore County officials have issued three alerts Monday around water quality in the area. Sanitary sewer overflows prompted water contact alerts at two locations: Parks Run and lower Beaver Dam Run in Cockeysville Big Gunpowder River downstream from the Loch Raven Dam The Baltimore County Environmental Health Services issues water contact alerts to let people know they should not drink stream water; they should avoid contact if they have cuts or wounds; and they should minimize hand-to-mouth contact if they are in the water. People should wash their
hands thoroughly before eating if in the area. A water quality advisory is also in effect for the freshwater portion of the Patapsco River. Officials say they issue this type of advisory when sewage contamination is not a factor but stormwater may produce contaminated conditions. The two water contact alerts and the water quality advisory are in effect until further notice

The Jewish Community Softball League (JCSL) by “Shimz Cars” Returns for 3rd Season
THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME
JUNE 17, 2021
J
CSL by Shimz Cars kicked off their third annual season at the Northwest Regional – by Stutman Chiropractic fields. Prior to opening week, the league’s 108 players were divided between nine different teams via a draft system, ensuring parity in competition. The nine teams are each named for their individual team sponsors: Columbia Group, Donny Ankri Architects, Fired Up Promotions, Gastro Center of MD, Joseph Greenfield & Laake, Kaylah Diamonds, Levin & Gann, Seven Seas Sushi, and WigWorks. Following the draft, teams were provided with their team jerseys, sponsored by Raskin Built. All nine teams will compete for eight regular season games, with the top four teams facing off in a round of playoffs. The playoffs winners will then battle each other in the AMF Creative championship. Continue below for some of the excitement from the first few weeks of the season. Week 1
Levin and Gann

Kaylah Diamonds
14
Levin & Gann showed resiliency and perseverance in their season opening win, ultimately “chipping away” at the Kaylah Diamonds team. L&G jumped out to a 4-0 lead but after some early inning jitters, Kaylah settled in, scoring 12 straight, with some clutch hitting from Yaakov “The Effervescent Tapeworm” Lichter, to take a commanding lead. L&G responded with a defensive adjustment that moved all three Rappaport brothers into the infield. This strategy proved fruitful as Kaylah scored only 2 more runs the rest of the way. L&G’s runs came from all spots in the lineup, including OF Shmuel Luxenburg, whose consistency at the plate proved to be taxing on Kaylah’s pitching. With a 1-2-3 inning from P Yaakov Rappaport in the 9th, L&G emerged victorious.
Donny Ankri Architects Seven Seas Sushi
Architects pulled away in the 8th inning. Down 5-1 in the 5th, Seven Seas scored a run in each of the next 3 innings to make it 5-4. But in the 8th, the heart of Architects batting order got on base and scored to extend the lead. Defensive gems were made by Architects’ outfielder Josh Zaslow (who made an incredible diving catch) and SS Donny Ankri (who orchestrated a pair of double plays).

Fired Up Promotions got things rolling quickly when slugger Mordy Schiermeyer drove in multiple runs with a clutch double in the 1st, helping the team take an early 5-0 lead. Fired Up maintained the lead for a bit but some costly mistakes allowed Gastro Center to draw even, eventually tying the game at 13-13 after 7 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Fired Up’s Richard Buck led off with a sharp single to right and Noam Shiman followed by hitting a triple to right, scoring Buck. Fired Up scored an insurance run when “Fountains of” Wayne Chesner (who collected 3 RBIs on the day), knocked in Shiman with a sac fly to right, putting Fired Up up 15-13. Gastro mounted a rally in the 9th to score 1 run but Fired Up, with some solid defense, held on for a 15-14 victory. RUBY LASKER DESIGNS

Timely hitting by Asher Sondhelm and Nosson Berman helped break the game open early, allowing WigWorks to go up 6-0 after the first inning. Outfielder Aryeh Wolf made multiple highlight worthy plays in the outfield while the rest of the team played solid, consistent defense. All around, the team is looking almost as pristine as a wash and set from Chana at Wig Works.
Columbia Group Levin and Gann
21 5
After a tumultuous off season which saw changes in ownership, management, and the loss of the “Finkelstein Bash brothers of Baltimore” to free agency, the Columbians were struggling to find their new identity as a team. Opening the season with a lopsided loss against said Bash brothers certainly did not help the cause. With the highly anticipated rematch of the JCSL 2020 championship game’s first pitch ceremony nearly complete, long time team co-captain Mendy Rauh gathered the team for what would turn out to be the motivational speech of the decade. “I was just trying to get the young guys riled-up and involved. I can’t even get them to batting practice!” said a gushing Rauh in a postgame interview. Come out to batting practice they certainly did!! The “young guys” went a combined 18 for 22 with 3 homers & 16 RBIs in a game that lasted 5 innings before the mercy rule was enforced. Week 3
Columbia Group 5 Joseph, Greenwald, & Laake 4 After a lengthy but friendly discussion regarding any and all nuances of the Pinch Running rules, the Columbians jumped out to an early 3-0 league. Still basking in the glory and daydreaming of the previous game’s victories, both teams didn’t seem to want to do much else until the 7th inning. Down 2 runs with one out in the 7th, JG&L’s star shortstop, David Pensak, single-handedly shocked both teams back to reality with a bases clearing triple. Father-of-the-year Tali Strum followed with the go-ahead sac drive to put the J.G. Laakers ahead 4-3 for what seemed to be another dramatic come-from behind victory. But the Columbians regrouped, scoring two in the bottom of the 7th, and reluctantly accepted victory in the bottom of the inning. Week 4
Donny Ankri Architects Levin and Gann
11 11
With multiple lead changes during the game, it was only expected that Levin & Gann would not let a 3 run deficit get to them in the bottom of the ninth. But that’s all L&G would get, as the game ended in a 11-11 tie. After some tightening up on the defensive end, L&G is beginning to get back to championship form. Donny Ankri Architects provided some timely hitting (and hard to track fly balls) but ultimately, they couldn’t hold on to their 3 run lead.

arlier this year, Mercaz Torah U’Tefillah, under the auspices of Rabbi Eichenstein shlit’a, launched Bachurei Mercaz. This programs goal was to provide for 7th and 8th grade boys who have a desire to be part of a chevra of growing
bachurim who will spend their shabbos together in a more productive way. The boys have their own minyanim throughout shabbos, including a Friday night Oneg, Melave Malka, and a very special Shalosh seudos together with the Rav. More than 40 boys from a vari-
ety of schools are members of this special group and they have proven themselves to be capable of organizing and carrying out the many responsibilities that come along with such an undertaking. Bachurei Mercaz celebrated their grand banquet at the Royal Restaurant togther with Rabbi
Eichenstein. They heard divrei chizuk from R’ Binyamin Blackman, a parent of one of the bachurim, R’ Shmuel Kranz, the programs director, and special guest speaker, Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim.

Kesser Torah of Baltimore
What is the mesivta’s current enrollment? There are currently over eighty bochurim in grades 9-12. B”H, the mesivta just graduated their first shiur of eighteen bochurim. About a third will be continuing in Kesser Torah’s new Bais Medrash next year, while the remaining will be in yeshivos throughout Eretz Yisroel, Lakewood, and Monsey. Next year the mesivta will be welcoming our largest incoming 9th-grade class.
What would attract the parents of an 8th-grade bochur to send their son to Kesser Torah? Families are attracted to the mesivta due to its warm atmosphere, personal touch, dedicated rebbeim, and holistic approach to ensuring that each talmid grows in his Limmud ha’Torah and Yiras Shamayim. The rebbeim are young and talented talmidei chachamim who have found a way to inspire our talmidim to love and live learning. The General Studies curriculum is also known to be one of the most innovative and serves as a model for other yeshivos around the country. As well, the beautiful new campus allows the students to learn in an oasis of Torah where their entire day can be focused on their growth. How does the mesivta serve as a model for other mosdos when it comes to General Studies? The General Studies administration includes Rabbi Moshe Dovid Robinson and Rabbi Mordechai Weissmann.
They have created a unique methodology and approach to General Studies. After seeing much success, a sister organization called Machon Menoras Hachochmah: The Institute for Torah Based Curricula founded to share this approach with yeshivos around the country. Under the leadership of Rabbi Weissmann, The Machon creates Torah-based General Studies courses and currently supplies approximately 10-15 yeshivos around the country with curricula. Please check out www.TheMachon.org to learn more about this exciting endeavor. The new campus has been described as a hidden gem. Where is it and what is on it? The 40+ acre campus is located just a short drive away from the community and located at 8400 Park Heights
Avenue. It includes a large academic building with a library, dining rooms, classrooms, dorms, offices, and multiple outdoor athletics fields. How can the community partner with the mesivta? The closing for the new campus during the peak of the pandemic inhibited the ability to fully renovate the academic building and construct a proper Bais Medrash. On Sunday, June 20th, the community is welcome to the beautiful new campus for a Hachnasas Sefer Torah beginning at 6 pm. This event will also kickstart a matching campaign that will allow Kesser Torah to transform a mid-twentieth-century monastery into a twenty-first-century Makom Torah. Please visit www.RaiseTheCrown.com to help Kesser Torah make this dream a reality.

What led to the founding of Kesser Torah? Five years ago, a need was recognized within our vibrant Baltimore community to establish another yeshiva that could be mechanech our boys with the drive, desire, and skills necessary to acquire the crown of Torah. Rabbi Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim, a noted rebbe and menahel from Yeshivas Toras Chaim of Denver and his son, Rabbi Avrohom Feldheim, a young and energetic rebbe and assistant menahel from the Mechina of South Florida joined forces to fill this need by establishing Kesser Torah.
Who will run Kesser Torah’s new Bais Medrash? Our Bais Medrash will be led by Rav Nosson Newman, a noted lamdan, talmid chacham, mechanech, public speaker, and mashpia. Rav Nosson is talmid muvhak of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik, zatza”l, who brings with him the ability to give over lomdus and yedios ha’Torah with an energetic bren. We expect to have approximately twenty bochurim from Baltimore and beyond.

Bennett Takes Over The Knesset on Sunday approved the 36th government in a narrow 6059 vote, making Naftali Bennett Israel’s second-youngest prime minister and the country’s first-ever religious prime minister. United Arab List MK Saeed Alkharumi abstained from the vote in protest of the planned demolition of illegal Bedouin structures in the Negev.
As former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu left his seat and passed that of Bennett, he shook Bennett’s hand in a gesture symbolizing a peaceful transition. In his speech before the vote, Bennett promised that the new government will be “reasonable and responsible” and work “for all citizens of Israel.” Prior to the vote, Yesh Atid’s MK Mickey Levy was chosen to replace the outgoing MK Yariv Levin (Likud) as Knesset Speaker. He was
elected 67-52. The new coalition is comprised of Yesh Atid, with 17 seats; Blue and White, with eight seats; Yisrael Beytenu and Labor, with seven seats each; Yamina, New Hope, and Meretz, with six seats each; and Ra’am, with four seats. Bennett, the new prime minister, hails from the Yamina party; it is the smallest-ever party to lead the government.
Hamas’s New PM
The Hamas terror group announced on Sunday that a new prime minister will take office in Gaza. The new PM, Issam al-Da’alis, served as a member of the Hamas politburo and head of its “Information Department,” in addition to serving as adviser to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. He succeeds Dr. Mohammed Awad, who resigned after just two years for unclear reasons. The handover ceremony was held on Sunday, parallel to the vote on Israel’s new government and its swearing-in. Hamas’ announcement closely followed a decision by Egypt to cancel a Cairo meeting of “Palestinian” groups to discuss a joint Hamas-Palestinian Authority government.

The Week In News Bibi Wants to “Rescue Israel” from Bennett
Tehran: “Iran’s Enemies are Gone” Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Monday expressed doubt that Israel’s policies would change with the country’s change in government. “Iran’s enemies are gone and powerful Iran is still here,” Reuters quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying. “I don’t think Israel’s policies will change with the new government.” Israel’s newly-instated Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has warned that Iran “is approaching a critical point” and that “Israel will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.” “Israel is not a party to the [international nuclear] deal and will maintain full freedom to act,” Bennett emphasized. He has also warned the U.S. that “renewing the nuclear deal is a mistake.”
Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told opposition parties that he intends “to rescue the people and the State of Israel.” In a Monday meeting, Netanyahu said that Israel’s new government is united by its “fraud, hate, and power-seeking,” and its parties do not share enough values to last its term. “It can be overthrown on the condition that we act together and with iron discipline. If we squabble, we will not achieve it,” Netanyahu said at the meeting, saying that the opposition parties should “shoot [politically] from the armored vehicle outwards, and hit. If we concentrate our effort outwards, we will bring them down.” He stressed, “If we work toward that goal we will succeed, but if we clash with each other we won’t.” Meanwhile, MK Yisrael Eichler of the United Torah Judaism party
on Tuesday dismissed Netanyahu’s statement, telling Kol Hai Radio that there is not much to fear from the opposition, since “governments fall due to internal issues.” In his opinion, the United Arab List is likely to bring down the government. “They understood that they were fooled in the agreement regarding the Negev, which is why [MK Saeed] Alkharumi (United Arab List) abstained yesterday,” he promised in the interview. “If you destroy their homes, they will bring down the government.”
Mask-Free
Israeli lifted its indoor mask requirement on Tuesday, marking the end
of one of the only major coronavirus restrictions remaining in Israel. Still, there are some exceptions to the new rule: Workers or guests who have not been vaccinated or recovered at welfare institutions, long-term care facilities or homes for the elderly; individuals en route to quarantine; and travelers on a flight. For now, the Health Ministry did not address schools. In the past, it has said that masks would still be required because the majority of those under 16 have yet to be vaccinated. If the declining trend in morbidity continues and the campaign to vaccinate 12- to15-year-olds, which began last Sunday, succeeds, there would be another discussion to consider dropping the mask requirement in schools as well. Last Sunday, Israel kicked off its vaccine drive for children aged 12 to 15, with 600,000 eligible for inoculation. Israel’s mass vaccination drive, which has already given both shots to over half the population, along with lockdown measures, brought down the number of new daily cases (based on a weekly average), from 8,600 at

Israel and the United Arab Emirates. In the interview, Cohen hinted that the Mossad may have blown up Iran’s underground centrifuge facility at Natanz and detailed how the Mossad removed Iran’s nuclear archive from where it had been stored in a Tehran warehouse in safes. He also confirmed that Israel had had its sights on top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. When asked where he would take his host, Ilana Dayan, if given the opportunity, Cohen said he would take her to the cellar at Natanz, where “the centrifuges used to spin,” insisting that the cellar “doesn’t look like it used to look.” “We say very clearly [to Iran]: We won’t let you get nuclear weapons. What don’t you understand?” Dayan, for her part, said that a “huge quantity of explosives” were built into the marble platform used to balance the centrifuges, noting that “the man who was responsible for these explosions, it becomes clear, made sure to supply to the Iranians the marble foundation on which the cen-

The Week In News trifuges are placed. As they install this foundation within the Natanz facility, they have no idea that it already includes a huge quantity of explosives.” Regarding targeted assassinations, Cohen said simply: “If the man constitutes a capability that endangers the citizens of Israel, he must stop existing.” However, “if he is prepared to change profession and not harm us any longer,” then he may be spared. Cohen also said that it is “not true” that Iran is “closer than ever” to achieving a nuclear bomb. On his relationship with Netanyahu, Cohen emphasized that his work to expose Iran was not related to Netanyahu; it was necessary because “it was important to us that the world should see [the material]” and “that it resonate with the Iranian leadership, to say to them, ‘Dear friends, 1, you’ve been penetrated; 2, we are watching you; 3 the era of hiding and lies is over.” Cohen also said that Netanyahu had never inquired as to whether he was “loyal” to Netanyahu on a personal level but that he knows he
“pays a price” for the relationship between them. However, he emphasized, “Mossad work plans are not remotely influenced by the political background.” Regarding his own future, Cohen said that although he is not planning on running for premiership at the moment, he will not rule it out; polls show that he would be a popular choice among Likud voters, winning 27% of the vote and pushing MK Nir Barkat, who currently leads the polls, down to just 16% from his current 32%.

The Week In News Binyamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu stepped down from his position as prime minister earlier this week, after being replaced by MK Naftali Bennett, who chairs the Yamina party. Haley and Hagee, who are visiting Israel together with their spouses, visited the Western Wall and historic Christian sites prior to stopping by the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem ahead of the Netanyahu family’s return to their private home. Immediately following the meeting, Haley tweeted a photo from the visit, adding, “Time with Prime Minister Netanyahu is always invaluable. His contributions to Israeli security and prosperity are historic. We have not heard the last from him.” At the same time, former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence tweeted his praise of Netanyahu, writing, “Congratulations Benjamin Netanyahu on your extraordinary tenure as the most successful Prime Minister in the history of the Jewish state. Millions of Americans are grateful for your leadership in Israel & your dedication to
strengthening the cherished Alliance between our two Nations.” Pence added, “Like every American, I welcome the new Israeli Government led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and look forward to working together to make the strong bond between our two great Nations even stronger. America Stands With Israel.”

ministration noted. The funds are the unspent balance of the $3.6 billion earmarked by former U.S. President Donald Trump for the wall’s construction. The money will be used to fund 66 defense projects in 11 states, three territories, and 16 countries. Meanwhile, the wall’s construction has been suspended by the Defense Department, though the Department of Homeland Security is still obligated to use approximately $1.9 billion allocated by Congress for projects at the border. Some of the funds will be used to “remediate urgent life, safety, and environmental issues resulting from the previous administration’s border wall construction,” DHS said, adding that all land will be returned to its previous owners if it is not needed for environmental or other remediation projects.
Covid Was Here Earlier Although lockdowns began in
the U.S. in March 2020, new studies suggest that Covid-19 was actually in the United States in December 2019 – weeks before cases were first recognized by health officials. Although the analysis of blood samples is not definitive, some are recognizing that small numbers of infections may have been in the U.S. before the world woke up to the danger emanating from China. “The studies are pretty consistent,” said Natalie Thornburg of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There was probably very rare and sporadic cases here earlier than we were aware of. But it was not widespread and didn’t become widespread until late February,” said Thornburg, principal investigator of the CDC’s respiratory virus immunology team. The pandemic coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Officially, the first U.S. infection to be identified was a traveler – a Washington state man who returned from Wuhan on January 15, 2020 and sought help at a clinic on January 19, 2020.

HEAVENLY HEALED How can one describe the pain and hysteria of a mother whose young child was diagnosed with a terrible tumor? The situation was grave. The doctors explained that few people recover from a growth as terrible as the one this child had. But here she was, calling to report on the happy seudas hoda’ah that her family had celebrated, thanking Hashem for the had they nissim above-and-beyond witnessed. “All along,” the mother said, “I had full trust in Hashem that we could overturn this gezeirah. Even though the doctors were pessimistically preparing us for the worst, I knew that our tefillos – and those of your special Tehillim minyan – would help. I felt secure, relying squarely on Hashem.

“We visited a great professor who suspected a malignant growth in our child’s hand. The specialists at Memorial Sloan Kettering said that we first needed to take a biopsy. “Unbelievable as it sounds, the results of the procedure were entirely different than all tests we had previously taken. The growth was benign! The doctors were amazed… but I wasn’t.”

The Week In News The latest CDC study, published on Tuesday by the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, is by a team including researchers at the National Institutes of Health. They analyzed blood samples from more than 24,000 people across the country, collected in the first three months of 2020 as part of a long-term study called “All Of Us” that seeks to track 1 million Americans over years to study health. Like the CDC study, these researchers looked for antibodies in the blood that are taken as evidence of coronavirus infection, and can be detected as early as two weeks after a person is first infected. Nine study participants – five from Illinois, and one each from Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin – were infected earlier than any COVID-19 case was ever reported in those states.
Chicago on Fire At least four people were killed and four others were injured on Tuesday morning in the second mass shooting in Chicago in four days, police said. A barrage of gunfire erupted just before 6 a.m. in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, police said. The shooting followed a disturbance at a home, police said. Several people were gathering inside the home when the shooting started. Four people suffered critical injuries in the shooting, including a 25-year-old man and a 41-year-old man who were both shot in the back of the head. A woman and a 23-year-old man, who was shot in the back, were also in critical condition at University of Chicago Hospital, police said. The incident follows a mass shooting on Saturday in Chicago that left a woman, Kimfier Miles, 29, dead and nine adults injured. Chicago police officials said investigators are searching for two suspects who walked up to a crowd gathered on the sidewalk in a business district in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood and opened fire just after 2 a.m. on Saturday. The nine adults who suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting ranged in age from 23 to 46, according to police.
Decuplets Chances are you don’t even know what decuplets are – and that’s OK. There have rarely been decuplets, but now, Gosiame Thamara Sithole is the proud mom of ten babies. The South African woman’s husband, Teboho Tsotetsi, was astonished by the amount of children that his wife was carrying. In scans before the birth, only eight babies were showing. “It’s seven boys and three girls. I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much,” he told Pretoria News after the birth. Ten babies at once would be a world record. Currently, the Guinness World Records is verifying Sithole’s experience. Lots of babies means lots of records. A woman who had eight babies in the U.S. in 2009 currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most children delivered at a single birth to survive. Last month, 25-year-old Halima Cissé from Mali gave birth to nine babies, who are reportedly doing well at a clinic in Morocco. Time to buy stock in Pampers.

The exceptionally rare 1933 “Double Eagle” is now the most valuable coin ever to appear at auction, almost doubling the previous world record, according to Sotheby’s. The coin has a face value of $20.

It features Liberty on one side and an eagle in flight on the other. What makes this coin so valuable is the fact that the 1933 edition of the “Double Eagle” never entered circulation, and nearly all of them were returned to the U.S. government and melted down. Only a handful of the coins were spared this fate, and a small number entered the market. In 1944, a Secret Service investigation declared that any of them found in collectors’ hands would be considered stolen. The coin that was recently sold is the only one that can be legally possessed by a private individual, following a legal battle between the United States Treasury and a former owner. The sale marks the second time it has broken the auction record for a coin, having last done so in 2002, when it fetched $7.6 million. The coin was one of three valuable items put up for sale by the shoe designer Stuart Weitzman. The other two – a stamp from a former British colony and a sheet of U.S. postage stamps printed with a unique error –
also attracted bids in the millions of dollars. Collector Weitzman meanwhile said in a press statement that it had “been an honor to be a custodian of these three legendary treasures.” “I started coin collecting to pass the time in a full leg cast at the age of 12, and later became interested in stamps when my older brother left behind the stamp book he’d started when he went to college. The passion for collecting took root immediately, and today truly marked the culmination of a life’s work.” $18 million all in a day’s work.

spheric Administration, examined a sample through a microscope and made a surprising discovery.
This wasn’t that.” Entomologists are trying to identify the insects and determine where they came from. Now is not the time to bury your head in the sand.
Whale of a Tale “Much to our surprise, it wasn’t some kind of algae or an oil spill like you would expect. It was just a whole bunch of dead bugs in the water,” Lillibridge said. The insects have wings smaller than a pinpoint, but in such large numbers they cause dark stains when stepped on. Steve Dickson, a marine geologist with Maine Geological Survey, said, “This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of this in my 35 years. Normally this time of year we get calls about too much seaweed on the beach and the swarming flies that hang around the decaying seaweed.
A lobster diver found himself in a bit of a hole when he encountered a whale off of Cape Cod on Friday morning. Michael Packard said that after jumping off his boat into the water, he “felt this huge bump and everything went dark.” At first, he feared he was being attacked by a shark.
“And then I felt around and I realized there was no teeth,” he said. “And then I realized, ‘Oh my G-d I’m in a whale’s mouth…and he’s trying to swallow me.’” Packard has been lobster diving for 40 years. Packard said he thought to himself, “This is it, I’m gonna die.” He thought about his kids and wife and felt there was no getting out of the whale’s mouth. “Then all of a sudden, he went up to the surface and just erupted and started shaking his head. I just got thrown in the air and landed in the water,” Packard recalled. “I was free, and I just floated there. I couldn’t believe…I’m here to tell it.” Captain Joe Francis witnessed the biblical-like event. “He’s … lucky to be alive,” Francis said, who was heading a fishing charter nearby. He got a front row seat to the narrow escape. “Then I saw Mike come flying out of the water feet first with his flippers on and land back in the water,” Francis said. “I jumped aboard the boat. We got him up, got his tank off. Got him
on the deck and calmed him down and he goes, ‘Joe, I was in the mouth of a whale.’ He goes, ‘I can’t believe it, I was in the mouth of a whale, Joe!’” Packard was probably in the big fish’s mouth for around 30 seconds. He was hospitalized after the traumatic event and was able to leave the hospital a day later, walking with a limp. “It was happening so fast,” a stunned Packard said. “My only thought was how to get out of that mouth.” Peter Corkeron, a senior scientist at the New England Aquarium, said that when humpback whales feed, “they do what we call gulp feeding, and they can open their mouths up incredibly widely.” “It’s a very unusual accident…this is a one in a – goodness knows what – trillion chance,” he said. “He was just unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Corkeron added, “Whales are big and strong, and if something goes wrong when you’re around them, it can be very dangerous,” he said. Oh, whale-y?

Torah Thought
Taking the High Road By Rabbi Zvi Teichman
After the unfortunate incident of Moshe hitting the rock and discovering that he will not merit entering the Promised Land, Moshe nevertheless forges ahead in leading the nation up to Israel’s border so they may be poised to be handed over to Yehoshua’s able leadership. As the nation was now situated to the south of the Land of Israel, the first region they attempt to traverse, the most natural direct route due north, is through the territory of Edom, the descendants of Esav. Moshe sends a delegation to the king of Edom with an impassioned plea reflecting on their kinship of ‘brotherhood’, describing his nation’s sojourn through the travails of Egypt where they called out to G-d who heard their prayers and brought them out of the iron furnace. He then kindly requests of them to please allow them to continue towards their ultimate destination through their land, adding, דרך המלך — on the king’s road, — נלךshall we travel, promising not to veer off the main road. They adamantly refuse, threatening to confront them with the sword. The Children of Israel present a second petition, offering to travel through roads that would bypass their cities altogether, as well as offering to pay them for any water usage. Once again their appeal is declined as the Edomites march out en masse defiantly, denying them entry. The verse concludes, — ויט ישראלand Israel turned away, — מעליוfrom near him. This entire interaction between the descendants of Yaakov and Esav is uncannily similar to the original actual encounter between their famous ancestors themselves. When making his way back from Charan, Yaakov aware of Esav’s enmity towards him also
sends messengers to appeal to Esav’s sensibilities in seeking reconciliation. There too they ultimately part ways with Yaakov making reference to one day meeting up with him in Seir. The great Sfas Emes, reveals that this intention to travel conveniently through the land of Edom was not a strategy to simply save them time and energy. Yaakov knew that one day the power of the ‘Voice of Yaakov’ would finally overcome the ‘Hands of Esav’, subduing its negative influence once and for all. In his first encounter Yaakov made an attempt to implement that ultimate goal and although it had its affect in quelling the anger of Esav, the time wasn’t ripe for a full conquest. As his descendants were at the cusp of entering the land they too sought to assert the supremacy of the word of G-d over the might of Esav by personifying the purity of their overpowering message that resonated from their very character. They would conquer the hearts of the Edomites, with them submitting to the will of G-d as expressed by the voice of the children of Yaakov. The time was yet premature for that eventual meeting at the Mount of Seir where the prophet foretells how ‘the saviors will ascend Mount Zion to judge Esav’s mountain, and the kingdom will be G-d’s.’ The Sfas Emes teaches that Moshe’s assertion of on the king’s road shall we travel, was not a geographical description of which road they would travel but rather a noble declaration that they would carry the banner of Torah and its values proudly, promoting the Almighty’s honor to the benefit of all humanity, prodding all the nations to accept His dominion.
So here we have the ultimate battle lines drawn between the forces of Yaakov and the legions of Esav. This conflict would continue until the final redemption. Until then we would continue to promote the values of Torah by the inspired daily life we live and in the myriad of interactions with the world around us bringing joy and positivity to all aspects of life. At the same time we must remain vigilant in warding off the influences of indulgent self-gratification, dishonest self-promotion, negativity towards people and things that interfere with our selfish and short-sighted perspective and goals — the corrupt legacy of Esav. No wonder this was where we took our very first step in that long journey to the Land of Israel, that we are still traveling toward. It was providential that this be our starting point so that from the onset we would know precisely where the line in the sand is drawn and wherein lies our greatest challenge in reaching that noble objective to pronounce with utter clarity the ‘Voice of Yaakov’ in all that we do and engage in. Ben Azzai taught in Avos, אל תהי ) (אבות ד ג...בז לכל אדם, do not be scornful of any person and do not be disdainful of anything, for you have no person without his hour and nothing without its place. Could the Mishna simply be teaching us that one should be wary of whom you write off because you never know when his moment will come? The author of this Mishna, Ben Azzai, attests elsewhere that although the famed principle of Rabbi Akiva, to love your neighbor as yourself is termed a ‘major rule’, there is an even greater one. He avers that the verse where the Torah begins to delineate the descendants of Adam that states, —זה ספרthis is the account,תולדת —אדםof the descendants of Adam )(בראשית ה א, is of even greater import. In what way is this verse more significant? The Chasid Yaavetz interprets the Mishna as a summons to man to absorb the world around him and all its
experiences with a positive attitude. G-d gazed into His Torah and created the world, if so then everything that follows from that moment is to be considered an integral part of Torah. He adds, that just as a Torah if it is missing one small detail is deemed disqualified, similarly man must consider and weigh the significance of every man and every experience of this cosmic expression of G-d’s will. One who scorns, ignores, or shuns the possibilities of discovering this manifestation of G-d in every facet of life is in a sense denying G-d. In expanding this idea a bit further, the notable Baal Mussar, Rav Shlomo Wolbe, describes what he refers to as ‘Olam HaYedidus’, a ‘World of Friendship’. The whole of creation is unified and bonded. Aren’t we all children of one Father? All of creation is close to one another, one great family. Us humans have an kinship to earth, after all that’s where we were created from; a closeness to the strata of vegetation, for we too grow; the connection to animal life even more apparent, and it goes without saying the affinity we share for humanity and all races. The ancient nations despised the stranger for they accepted not the notion of our common ancestry; a common Father. For a Jew however, there is no alienation in the world, on the contrary we are commanded to love the ‘sojourner’, the convert. Elsewhere he writes: A great closeness predominates between Israel and G-d. The Jew does not approach God with celebration like to a god who is a rare, exalted guest, but like a son who approaches his loving and devoted father. This closeness is pervasive in all areas of life and even gratifies one’s physical life. The closeness between Israel and the Holy One establishes a yedidus and ‘closeness’ between a person and the world. It establishes a very close bond with each Jew, behavior in accord with the ways of peace with all people, caution against causing pain to any living being, and a positive relationship toward everything in the Holy One’s world. This finds expression in the maxim, ‘Despise no one and disdain nothing, for there is no person

34 who does not have his moment and there is nothing that does not have its place.’ When we enter the world of Torah, we find ourselves in the world of yedidus. This yedidus is not an abstract theory. The Torah speaks in the language of action, it gives us commandments. They are what establish the connections between a person and his Creator, between a person and his peers, and between a person and himself. Here there isn’t merely a religious ritual but a lifestyle that encompasses all aspects of life. Might it be that when Ben Azzai speaks of the ‘account of Adam’ he means to address this very notion? The ‘story’ of man unravels with each positive reaction we have with those people and events that are all integral to that marvelous and continuous story that began with the advent of Man. He thus emphasizes in Avos the value of being attuned to this world of yedidus that finds its full expression in the positive manner in which approach each manifestation of His presence in this wonderful tale called life.
Esav is the very antithesis of this notion. In his myopic view of the world he sees only himself and his needs, incapable of seeing an inviting world of yedidus that beckons us to warm ourselves in His world of friendship. The negativity towards anyone or anything that cannot serve his expectations is ultimately his denial of G-d’s presence in this world. The very first individual to display scorn in the face of unprecedented opportunity was Esav when he opted to placate his hunger by forfeiting his right to the Bechora, the birthright. — ויבז עשוEsav spurned the birthright. )(בראשית כה לד It is in contrast to the pessimism of Esav that Ben Azzai challenges us to view the world with an optimism that will not only enlighten all whom we come in contact with but most importantly ourselves. A story was told regarding a husband and wife from Los Angeles, long time teachers, who traveled to the

recent Torah Umesorah convention that took place in the Poconos. They rented a car when they arrived to the airport in Philadelphia for the weekend. They were rushing to the airport after the convention to make their flight back home. They arrived at the car return site and were greeted by Kelly a friendly agent handling their return. After greeting her kindly and presenting the rental agreement she pointed out that they failed to refill the tank which would now cost them ten dollars a gallon. After suggesting they were free to find a gas station to fill-up they thanked her but told her they would incur the expense fearing they might miss their flight. She then inquired if they were Jewish to which they obviously responded they were indeed. She wondered aloud about the overwhelming number of orthodox Jews who were frequenting the airport that day. The couple informed her about the teacher convention and the thousand or so participants who travelled there from the throughout the United States and beyond. Having by now fully processed their papers she surprisingly took the document, proceeded to rip it up and told them she would reprocess them without the exorbitant surcharge for gas. Bewildered, they listened to her express a most poignant sentiment. She told them that just three days earlier her beloved bother passed away. Being in no mood to go to work and face the daily pressures and challenges with customers she nevertheless had no choice, due to financial realities, but to go to work. She admitted that before setting out she prayed silently to G-d that she not have to face the usual collection of tired, worn and crabby travelers, otherwise she would surely blow a fuse. To her utter delight the vast majority of people she had dealt with that day were inspired orthodox Jews, whose pleasant manners and kind and thankful attitude had brightened her day allowing her to survive her inner emotional turmoil. (Ami Living Magazine, Issue 323, Aha moments; Rabbi Yoel Gold) The moral of the story is not that it pays to be nice because you never know when it will save you a couple of bucks. Neither is the lesson that one should always behave nicely since one never knows when their actions will affect a Kiddush Hash-
em, a sanctification of G-d’s name. It is though about living in a world of yedidus. When we live attuned to the people and experiences around us, knowing that with a positive, optimistic and happy outlook we can draw from the wellsprings of ‘friendship’ that G-d threaded into every patch of life, not only will we live more peacefully but we will avail the planet of G-d’s warm embrace that is ever present for those who are willing to open their eyes. There are people who focus on the negative, who refuse to see the positive light that emanates from every person despite their shortcomings. They deprive themselves of the happiness that awaits those who are simply willing to discover the good. אין לך אדם שאין לו שעה, for you have no person without his hour. The Hebrew word שעה, translated here as hour or moment, more accurately means to ‘turn ones attention to’ as when G-d, וישע, turned favorably in acceptance of Hevel’s offering and not Kayin’s. What the Mishna is affirming is every man’s value before G-d, for each of us has a quality that G-d sees favorably. As with Esav’s torchbearer Edom, when we were shunned by them the Torah reports how ויט ישראל מעליו, and Israel turned away from near him, so too must we not allow other’s negativity to infect our soul, and we must forge ahead with absolute optimism. The numerical value of ויט, and Israel turned away, is exactly that of ויבז, and he rejected — the negative credo of Esav. On the king’s road shall we travel! We must always take the ‘high road’, the path of our King, our Father in Heaven, Who desperately seeks our closeness waiting for us to access it in discovering a world of yedidus. We must never wallow in antagonism and deprecation. We must always aspire to see the bright side in life for in that quality lays our success in living inspired by His presence. The depth of Torah knows no bounds. Volumes of sefarim are written about seemingly minute topics. Gemara contains the give and take of a sugya, while the halacha reveals the end result. What could be better than combining this process of learning—from the conceptual discussion in the Gemara to the p’sak halacha in the Mishnah Berurah! And even more so, to learn a sugya relevant to an upcoming Yom Tov!
Now, we have that opportunity. This year the limudim of Daf HaYomi Bavli and Dirshu Daf HaYomi B’Halacha are incredibly coinciding with each other in the months preceding the Yom Tov of Succos. This gives us a rare opportunity to prepare for the Chag with a deep understanding of the complex Mesechta and Halachos behind this extraordinary Yom Tov.

Delving into the Daf
What Came First? By Rabbi Avrohom Sebrow
B
oruch: I learned the Daf very well this week, and I can’t really see how it has relevance to practical halacha. Shimon: The Daf doesn’t have to have any practical relevance. Learning Torah is a mitzvah even if it’s not halacha l’maaseh. Furthermore, the logic behind various scenarios can be applied elsewhere, even if the exact situation discussed in the Gemara doesn’t exist. By the way, I wanted to ask your opinion on an interesting situation. There are two babies having their bris in the same shul with the same mohel. One was born Wednesday morning at 5 am. The other was born at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Which baby should have his bris milah first? Boruch: That’s obvious. The baby born in the morning should have his bris first, since he was born first. Shimon: Actually, from the Daf this week, we learned that there is no preference. The Gemara discusses a goat that was designated for a korban on Yom Kippur. Another goat was designated for the same exact korban. The kohen gadol has to choose which one to bring. The Gemara suggests that even though one was purchased earlier and designated earlier, that itself is not a reason to choose that one. Ultimately, both the original korban and the replacement are not viable until a second lottery is performed. Therefore, they both become viable at the exact same time. (Rashi Yoma 64a D”H B’idna. This logic is the conclusion according to Rav and the Chachomim.) So too, here, although one baby was born earlier, he cannot have his bris until the morning of the eighth day. The baby that was born later can also have his bris performed
at the same time on the morning of the eighth day. Since the obligations come at the exact same time, there is no preference to perform the bris on the baby that was born first. However, if this will lead to argument and strife, then the bris should be performed on the baby born first. (Birchas Avrohom OC 14) Boruch: It’s interesting you brought that up. This Sunday in shul there are two brissim taking place: one where the baby was sick and could not have a bris earlier; the other baby was born during twilight on Friday. They are not sure if the baby was born on Friday or Friday night (Shabbos), so they are making the bris on Sunday.
to give the baby that recovered from illness a bris until Sunday. Since his obligation started later, his bris should come second. (See Chelkas Yaakov YD 142) Boruch: But going back to your initial case, you said that when the original korban became temporarily disqualified and now you have two viable korbanos, you can choose either one. (According to the Sages.) That logic is clearly against the Shut Torah Lishma (56). He writes regarding a certain shul that kept their Sifrei Torah in a safe. Before davening, they would take a Sefer Torah out of the safe and put it in the Aron Kodesh. It happened once that they took a Sefer
Ultimately, both the original korban and the replacement are not viable until a second lottery is performed.
Friday wasn’t an option because it may be Day 7. Shabbos wasn’t an option because maybe the baby was born on Friday during the day and the bris can’t take place on Shabbos because that would be Day 9. (Only brissim on the eighth day can take place on Shabbos.) So the bris is on Sunday. I guess they can pick which baby goes first. Shimon: Actually, in that case, the Friday/Shabbos baby should have his bris first. There is no question that the obligation to give him a bris either started on Friday or on Shabbos. Because of doubt, the bris is pushed off until Sunday. There was no obligation
Torah out from the safe and brought it to the shul. They decided to roll it to the proper place before davening. The gabbai noticed that two letters were attached, rendering the Torah pasul. They put it in the Aron Kodesh meanwhile and took a second Torah out from the safe. They rolled that one as well and put it in the Aron Kodesh. The gabbai mentioned to the Rav that the first Sefer Torah was pasul. He examined it closely and discovered that a combination of shadows and dirt had misled the gabbai. The Sefer Torah was, in fact, kosher. The Torah Lishmah ruled that they must read
from the first Sefer Torah. Since that was taken out of the safe first and was designated for use first, they must use it and not the second replacement Sefer Torah. This clearly contradicts your logic, Shimon. In your case, since one korban was designated first, they should have to use that one. Shimon: Good point. However, there is a major difference. In my case, the first korban did, in fact, become temporarily disqualified. When it was reinstated, there was already another viable korban as well becoming qualified at the same time. In that case, you are free to choose either korban. Here, the first Sefer Torah was never disqualified. It was erroneously declared pasul. In fact, it was kosher all along! Therefore, since it was chosen first, you must read from it first. Boruch: So if I set up my Chanukah menorah with wax candles and then find olive oil which is more mehudar, I should still use the wax candles because I chose it first? Shimon: According to the Shvua Yaakov, you are correct. However, the Chacham Tzvi disagrees and says since the olive oil is more mehudar, you should not use the wax candles even though it was chosen first. (See Shaarei Teshuva OC 683:1) Boruch: Thanks Shimon, but if I have any halacha l’maaseh questions, I’ll ask my rav and not rely on this article.

Mother of 8 Saves Lives By Raphael Poch

alton resident Orly Ezra is a woman of many talents, in addition to running her own tourism business and renting out tzimmerim (guesthouses) in her hometown of Dalton, she is also a mother of eight children aged 1127 and volunteers as an EMT with United Hatzalah in a number of capacities. In addition to being a volunteer first responder who drops whatever she is doing and rushes out to respond to medical emergencies whenever they occur in her area, Orly also volunteers with the organization’s Ten Kavod project as well as the Emergency Room assistance project. As part of the Ten Kavod (Giving Honor) project, Orly visits an elderly person who lives on their own at least once a week. She spends an hour with them, checking their medical status as well as being social with them so as to alleviate the feeling of loneliness that they feel. “This project was especially important during the Covid-19 pandemic in Israel when many of the elderly were cut off from the rest of the world for fear of contracting the virus,” said project director Ariel Ben David. “Many of the elderly in Israel, including Holocaust survivors who are part of the project, didn’t leave their homes at all during the entire year of the pandemic and the only social interaction they had was with volunteers who visited them – volunteers like Orly.” As part of the Emergency Room Assistance project, Orly, like some 500 other volunteers across the country, does at a minimum two shifts a month, each for 3-4 hours in the emergency room of a local hospital. Orly works with Ziv hospital in Tzefat. As part of the project, she assists the nursing staff at the hospital with patient triage and intake, as well as performing numerous vital tasks in caring for the patients. Orly
and other participating volunteers are responsible for some of the basic care that the incoming patients receive in the emergency room, and by doing this, they alleviate the pressure felt by the medical teams during peak intake times. “I’ve been volunteering for more
hiking trail of Nahal Amud. Those keep us pretty busy, as do the home child-births that take place because women can’t make it to the hospital in time,” Orly explained. “We have lots of other medical calls as well – pretty much everything that can take place does.”
“It took me three minutes to arrive, and within six minutes of getting there, the baby was born in my arms.”
than three years as part of United Hatzalah, and I love it,” said Orly. “I live in an area without a lot of first responders, and as the towns are fairly far apart, ambulance response times can be slow, especially if the other volunteers aren’t around when an emergency occurs,” explained the seasoned EMT. “We have a lot of car accidents here due to the windy roads and a lot of hikers get stuck on the nearby
Orly recalled an emergency birth that took place entirely in six minutes. “I remember the most dramatic child-birth experience that I had was when I responded to an incident of a woman in the early stages of labor. She was still having early contractions when her husband called for an ambulance. It took me three minutes to arrive, and within six minutes of getting there, the baby
was born in my arms. Thankfully, the mother and baby were both well, and a new baby boy was born. It was pretty dramatic how quickly things developed, and thank G-d I was there with another volunteer, otherwise, the husband would have had to deliver his own wife and would have waited a long time for the ambulance to arrive.” Orly recounted another incident involving two young men who were involved in a motor vehicle accident. One of the men was driving a car and the other an all-terrain-vehicle ATV. “It was a serious accident involving a young man who was in critical condition. He was transported by helicopter to Rambam Hospital. He was suffering from a serious head condition. The second young man was in serious condition with an open bone fracture,” she recalled. “Had we not been there to treat them, they would have waited too long for intervention and may not be here today. Currently, they are both recuperating and hopefully will make a full recovery.” In spite of running her own business, Orly is very thankful to be a volunteer with United Hatzalah and have the opportunity to save lives. “I am very thankful that I entered into this line of volunteering,” she said. “I believe that anyone who can should pick up the gauntlet and become a volunteer EMT and first responder, no matter what you do. “I have eight children and run my own business, and once I had the opportunity to do this, I jumped at it. It makes such a difference to those around me, as well as to me and my children and husband as well. The work is so vital and important, and it really saves lives. Those who love give to others, and they give to others without expecting anything in return. This is what we do as volunteers in United Hatzalah.”

Father’s Day By Sara Rayvych, MSEd
F
athers play a large role in a child’s life that is often underappreciated. There is a story told about Rabbi Eliezer Silver, zt”l. Rabbi Silver was well-known for the lengths he went to save Jews from the Holocaust and assist the survivors afterwards. A couple with two young children came from the ashes of Europe and arrived on American shores. They had no one in their families who survived the war, and they went to Cincinnati, OH, where they knew Rabbi Silver would help them. They stayed in an apartment above Rabbi Silver’s home. Soon afterwards, the husband died and the young widow was left alone with two children. Rabbi Silver turned to the bereaved woman and told her that he would step in as the children’s father. Rabbi Silver meant those words when he said them. It was known that the Rav never slept properly, but one day he was briefly resting and as the Rav tried to lay down the two young orphans came into his room, bounced on his stomach and played with his beard. When their mother found out, she was horrified that her children had used the gadol as a human trampoline. Rabbi Silver quickly stopped her apology and said that children can jump on their father and that he was serving as their father. I heard this story a few years ago, and it made quite an impact on me. The obvious lesson is that Rabbi Silver understood that a father’s role is so much more than taken at first glance. Fathers play a unique role and that is what we honor on Father’s Day (and every day!). As parents, there is so much more than just serving food and paying the bills. The bonding and playfulness are important to a child’s development, and fathers have their own unique style that needs to be appreciated.
Throughout this article when I refer to “fathers” I am not only referring to the biological father but to anyone who steps up to that role in a child’s life. There are many ways to step into that role including through adoption, as a stepfather, grandfather, uncle, mentor, or as Rabbi Silver did above. Anyone who fulfills that important role in a child’s life
my family will attest, Rabbi Silver took his fatherly role seriously and was there for our family for the rest of his life. To this day, our family treasures the unique connection we had with Rabbi Silver. I have a son named “Eliezer” for this very reason. Thank you to my father and to my cousin Joey who verified the story as they personally heard it from
They have their own unique way of having fun, and kids love it.
should know how important they are to that child and his/her development. Through my extended family, I’ve been able to see the many powerful ways a man can be this important person in a child’s life. There is a second, less obvious reason that I found the opening story so special. I confirmed the story not from a book but from within our family itself. The aforementioned widow was my Bubby Bina after the too-early passing of my Zaidy Yosef. My father was one of the two young orphans jumping on his new, substitute father, Rabbi Silver. As
my grandmother numerous times. Honestly, I’m not sure fathers need my article on how to be fathers but I’ll throw a few points in anyway. The truth is that this article isn’t just for fathers but for others to appreciate the fatherly role. We can step back and appreciate how unique each parent or adult is in a child’s life and allow that to flourish.
Beyond the Obvious We tend to get caught up in the details of daily life. There is so much that goes on that we can easily forget to step back and have a little
fun. To be honest, there are times that it’s unrealistic to do more than the bare minimum because we’re in “crisis mode.” That being said, we shouldn’t forget to go beyond that and add some enjoyment to our days. Kids thrive on attention and playfulness. From all that I’ve seen, fathers have a special way of doing this. They have their own unique way of having fun, and kids love it. As much as I might do the occasional airplane ride, I can’t do it with the same flair as my husband. Whether it’s Simchas Torah dancing or flying through the living room, there is something different and exciting that fathers do and kids love and thrive on. It’s important to appreciate how much children require these lesser-known needs. We can easily underestimate how much children benefit from the various life experiences they encounter. Fathers view the world differently than mothers, and kids benefit from having a bond with their fathers and what only that adult can provide. One-on-one time is so important and gives children a chance to have special time with their father. Walks, errands or games are all ways to enhance the father-child bond. Private bonding time with a father should be considered no less important than bonding time with a mother. It may look different, but it’s no less important.
Take a Step Back I think that often others get nervous when they see how fast fathers can make kids fly. Unless it’s reaching dangerous or risky levels, step back and let fathers be fathers. If you’re unsure if it’s dangerous, then you can ask a pediatrician or physical therapist. Otherwise, step back and let the giggles begin. It’s good to remember that fathers (and others) can do things differently but that dif-

dler. Even if they laugh, it can still be dangerous. Ask a professional what is safe and at which point it becomes dangerous. Watch your child’s face throughout. If you see he/she is starting to look scared or nervous, then tone it down. Sometimes kids need a bit more support to feel secure. This can easily be done by supporting them further, whether it’s their back, neck or legs. Watch for their reaction so you can respect their needs as you play. Have fun and enjoy being a kid again when you interact with your own. The more fun you have, the more fun they’ll have – just do it safely.
our community who may not have someone to take them to shul, a father-child event or other seminal moments in their young lives. Don’t underestimate the part you can play in someone else’s child’s growth and development. Fathers, however they came into a child’s life, are irreplaceable and the relationship should be respected and treasured. Let’s all take the time to appreciate the fathers in our and our children’s lives. We wouldn’t be the same without them. On a personal note, thank you to the men in my family who have given of themselves every moment to be there for the next generation.
An Important Note ferent isn’t bad. Let them do their thing and allow the children to revel in the attention only fathers provide. Everyone has their way of doing things and we easily tend to discount the way others do it. If there can be 70 faces to the Torah, then
there can be more than one way to interact with or speak to a child.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that there are many children who don’t have someone currently in their life to play that paternal role. You don’t need to be the next Rabbi Silver to step up to the plate and recognize that there are children in

Another Reason to Cut Out Sugar
THE BALTIMORE JEWISH HOME

here are many reasons to avoid sugar in your diet. High sugar consumption tends to lead to weight gain and obesity. Obesity increases your risk of developing other chronic diseases such as Type II diabetes and heart disease, not to mention all the cavities that can result from high sugar consumption. Sugar has absolutely no nutritional value – no vitamins or minerals, simply calories and carbs. Here’s one more reason to stay away from sugar. A study published in the journal of Cancer Research demonstrates an association between sugar consumption and an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Research on mice showed that high sugar consumption, such as the average American diet, increases one’s risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers believe that eating sugary foods causes the growth of certain enzymes and fatty acids in breast cancer cells. Eating sugary foods causes a rapid rise in blood sugar. The body then responds by producing more insulin. Elevated insulin levels can cause an increased production of a growth factor called IGF-1. IGF-1 stimulates the growth of tissues –
including breast tissue. Studies have found that insulin, along with IGF-1, fuel the growth of cancer cells. Another way that a high sugar diet contributes to cancer is sugar’s effect on body weight. As mentioned above, a high sugar diet increases body weight and one’s risk of obesity.
levels. None of that is controllable. Our diet, though, is something that we can control and by cutting down on the sugar, hopefully we can prevent the development of breast cancer in that way. Staying away from candy and cake is not enough. Sugar “hides” in almost
Most people get bombarded with the “hidden” sugars in foods and are consuming a lot more sugar than the recommended amount.
Obesity has been shown to have a link to breast cancer. The bottom line is that sugar is bad for your body in general. Being that we lack control over the prevention of breast cancer as most of the risk factors are not alterable, it is important to take control of what we can. The most common breast cancer risk factors are age, family history of breast cancer, genetics, and estrogen
all packaged, processed and refined foods in the U.S. and around the world. When purchasing processed and packaged foods, it is important to read the food label clearly and carefully analyze the sugar content. The American Heart Association suggests that women restrict their sugar intake to less than 6 teaspoons a day. To put that into perspective, the average 12-ounce soft drink contains about
9 teaspoons of sugar. But let’s face it: that’s never the only sugar we’re consuming daily. Most people get bombarded with the “hidden” sugars in foods and are consuming a lot more sugar than the recommended amount. The best option to lower your risk of developing breast cancer would be to cut back on sugar. Enjoy more whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, as well as exercising regularly. Try cutting back on the sugar in your coffee and tea and on the amount of sweet treats you normally eat. You’ll be surprised to find your taste buds will adapt and become more sensitive to the sweet taste. Cutting out sugar from your diet will also help you lose weight and leave your body feeling better energized. 9 Ways Fatherhood is Different Now Than 100 Years Ago M
In 1921, if a father put a roof over his family’s head, he was a success. Today, it takes a roof, deck, pool, and 4-car garage. And that’s just the vacation home.
M
In 1921, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when the baby arrived. Today, a father must wear a smock, know how to breathe, and record the whole thing on his iPhone.
M
In 1921, fathers passed on clothing to their sons. Today, kids wouldn’t touch Dad’s clothes even if it meant freezing halfway to death.
M
In 1921, fathers shook their children gently and whispered, “Wake up, it’s time for school.” Today, kids shake their fathers violently at 4 a.m., shouting, “Wake up, it’s time for hockey practice.”
M
In 1921, when fathers entered the room, children rose to attention. Today, kids glance up and grunt, “Dad, you’re blocking my view.”

In 1921, a father came home from work to find his wife and children at the supper table. Today, a father comes home to a note: “David’s at baseball, Sarah’s at gymnastics, I’m at the gym, pizza in fridge.” In 1921, fathers and sons would have heart-toheart conversations while fishing in a stream. Today, fathers pluck the headphones off their sons’ ears and shout, “WHEN YOU HAVE A MINUTE…” In 1921, if a father had breakfast in bed, it was eggs, cheese, hash-browns and muffins. Today, it’s Special K, soy milk, dry toast and a lecture on cholesterol.
In 1921, fathers told their children, “When I was a kid, we weren’t spoiled like you guys today.” Today, fathers tell their children, “When I was a kid, we weren’t spoiled like you guys today.”

58 There is a recurrent theme on the far left that things have never been worse. Kevin Hart expressed a view many hold when he told The New York Times, “You’re witnessing white power and white privilege at an all-time high.” This is one of the big problems with wokeness, that what you say doesn’t have to make sense or jive with the facts or ever be challenged, lest the challenge itself be conflated with racism. But saying white power and privilege is at an all-time high is just ridiculous. Higher than a century ago, the year of the Tulsa race massacre? Higher than the years when the KKK rode unchecked and Jim Crow went unchallenged? Dating Dialogue
What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters
Dear Navidaters,
I need some advice. I’m a 23-year-old single woman with a good job and a college degree. I’m not yeshivish but not really modern. I’m put-together and ambitious. I’m mature and grounded, and have a very positive outlook on life. But...my parents got divorced (more than 15 years ago). I’m not asking for
much; just a solid intelligent guy with a stable career who davens three times a day and learns a few times a week. I want an ambitious man who will support his wife and family. Is that too much to ask for? I find that there are so few men who exist with this criteria, and the ones who
B A LT I M O R E J E W I S H H O M E . C O M
are available don’t hear about me. They get so many resumes, and because I don’t come from a perfect family, I get left behind. I’ve tried single events, dating websites, met with many shadchans, etc. I put myself out there. Yet, I still don’t get dates. I haven’t gone out in over a year. I’ve only dated a few men, and most were one-and-dones. I know for a fact that if I met a guy naturally, he’d want to date me; regardless of my parents’ marital status. But, all the mechitzas and rules of “modesty” in the Orthodox world prevent singles from meeting. Of course, I’m very happy and living my life to the fullest. However, I’d like to have a companion in life. We’re built to crave a relationship. So, I’m asking you for advice. This system is leaving good women like myself behind. It needs a solution and more than a perek of Tehillim. Chana*

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. hana, I am responding to your wish to get married. It is not my practice to hold forth on sociological issues in our community. I like to focus on individual needs and questions. Nonetheless, I will preface my remarks with a few statements. People with less-than-storybook families do get married. The system is not out to exclude anyone. The past year has been particularly difficult for those in the dating world. Most people have turned inward, and the normal social networking and events have been on hiatus. I feel bad that you haven’t dated in a year but that, unfortunately, is the case for many during this time of isolation and quarantine. Perhaps now, when the world is opening up, is the time to become more creative in your networking. Everyone is eager to meet up. Go beyond the normal channels of shadchanim, weekends, and meetups. You are ambitious and your openness about that tells me you are willing to work at your long-term goals. You have a lot of strong qualities and perhaps you should now seek new social opportunities. Join a sports or hobby group. Or even better, create one. Share it on social media. Find opportunities to connect with people in other communities who share your interests. Volunteering in the right role will give you gratification and a new social circle. Travel, have fun, and continue to live life to the fullest. If you find yourself nearing bitterness, it’s time for professional support.

ear Chana, Before I say anything else I
must say this: Let go of your need for control and work on your positivity. You are using your parents’ divorce as a pawn in the game to find blame in the fact that you are not yet married. You play the same move with your mechitzah comment. If only my parents weren’t divorced. If only there were no mechitzas separating men and women at weddings. If only the rules of modesty were changed. If only… If only…. If only…… You are in a painful position and my heart goes out to you, but if I can be honest, you must work on your attitude. Take your frustrations, wrap them up, and turn them into positive actions. Recognize that you are a wonderful young (yes, young!) lady who has everything going for her but an attitude and jadedness tainting it. You sit too much in your sadness. I cannot tell you how many times a month I hear from guys I set up, “I would like a girl who is positive, upbeat, and not jaded.” There is no way your attitude is not affecting your demeanor on dates and at events. You know the character Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh? I used to have an acquaintance like that. To her, this was life; everyone was out to get her. Society was flawed. Frumkeit was constricting. Family was unreliable. Nobody tried hard enough to be her friend. She lived her life on if-onlys. If only everything was different. I can tell you that sadly it has been over 15 years that I have known her and, still, nothing in her life has changed. She is still sitting sadly in her parents’ home lamenting life. As a famous author and motivator named Jeff Keller once said in his book, “A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.” To a woman with soiled glasses, everything will be dirty. Clean your glasses, pick yourself up, and reinvent yourself. There is no life circumstance that will prevent you from getting married when you realize that you are not in control – G-d is. Find ways
daily to cognitively thank Hashem for all the good that you have in your life. Try to get out more, take trips to different communities. Get involved with singles who get together for communal meals; join an organization that allows men and women to work side by side. Go to singles’ events with a positive and confident attitude. People will look at you differently, and you will look at your life differently.
The Single Rivka Weinberg
C
hana, I really hear the struggle in trying to find a with-it, smart, shtark, and career-oriented guy. At time,s it can be difficult when it feels like that balance simply does not exist. As someone who is also established in a good career, I understand why it can be difficult to find a guy whom you really respect. If anyone has any leads, please feel free to send him my way (rivkaweinberg2@gmail.com). It is fascinating to me that you attribute your being single to your parents’ divorce and claim that you know for a fact that if you met a guy naturally, he would want to date you. However, you also say that you have attended singles’ events and have no success. It is funny because I have never been to a singles’ event where my sticker said, “Hello, my name is Rivka Weinberg, and my parents are married.” From that it is clear to me that not every guy who meets you, regardless of your family background, wants to date you. It sounds like you yourself are not comfortable with your family situation, and you have not worked through the emotional baggage that comes along with it. The law of attraction discusses that the soundwaves a person puts out in the world are the ones that will come back to attract him or her. If you feel like you are not getting set up with quality boys, the first thing you should do is a deep internal search. Although you describe yourself as ma-

ture and someone who has a positive outlook on life, do you deep down really believe that? Before you go pointing fingers and blaming the “rules of modesty in the Orthodox world,” I suggest you go to therapy to work through these issues. Why are you always going on one-and-dones? Why doesn’t your resume get presented to the type of boy you are looking for? I am sorry to say, but I do not believe based off how you phrased your question that this is solely based on your parents’ divorce. If you are not confident with who you are and enough for yourself, then how can you expect a guy to see that within you? Food for thought: I once heard that a person’s ambition usually stems as a coping mechanism for a life challenge one has faced. There is tremendous positive and negative impact when a person is ambitious, so pinpointing one’s intention and channeling ambition appropriately in every situation is crucial. And you are right; you definitely should be saying more than just one perek of Tehillim if you want Hashem to help you get clarity throughout this process. He is the ultimate Shadchan, so if you do not acknowledge that first and try to take matters into your own hands, you will surely fail. Maybe now is the time to put your hands up and turn to Hashem because clearly your intense hands-on method has not been working. As individuals, we each need to find our own balance between hishtadlus and tefillah. It can

Please don’t be insulted if I suggest that your parents’ divorce is not what’s keeping you from getting dates. From a purely mathematical point of view, there are an equal number of young men and young women whose parents have divorced. And, from what I can discern, men in their midto late-20s don’t usually reject a dating recommendation simply because the girl’s parents are divorced. Because you report that you have not had any success at singles’ events, and that you have experienced a number of “one-and-done” dates, the problem might be in how you present yourself. I hope you are not offended if I offer the following suggestions: Ask a shadchan for honest feed-

scenario, the vast majority decided to wait a few extra days in order to receive an extra twenty dollars. In another scenario, subjects were asked to choose between $100 dollars now or $120 dollars in three days from now. In this case, most subjects chose to receive $100 now rather than wait a few days to receive $120. In both scenarios, there was a three-day delay between the choice of $100 and $120. When both choices were in the future, it was quite easy to decide that it is worthwhile to wait a little longer to receive a larger payout. However, when one choice was in the present and one choice was in the future, then their decision-making process seems to have gone offline, and they chose the instant payout regardless of the cost it will have for them in the future. Why are we this way? Why is the human brain so incapable of staying levelheaded when faced with this type of a decision? We understand that this is part of Hashem’s plan for us, to be faced with difficult decisions and use the gift of free
will to make the right decision. Our main question therefore is what are the neurological underpinnings of this phenomenon? In a very loose sense, our brain has both a thinking section and a reactive section. The prefrontal cortex is our thinking brain. It is located right behind our foreheads and this is where we think through and process the information that we receive. The reactive brain is associated with the limbic system, which contains sections of our brain that deal with emotions and survival. When our emotional arousal is very low and we are dealing with a purely logical question, then our prefrontal cortex can process the information and we will be able to think clearly and make the right choice. However, when our brain senses that the choice we are faced with affects our immediate survival, them our limbic system kicks in, our emotional level spikes, and we start to focus exclusively on the present. Our brains were created this way be-
cause when we truly are in a situation when our survival is threatened, we need to react quickly and focus completely on the present. When our brains are tricked into thinking that I really need this doughnut, then our limbic system kicks in and we lose the ability to think logically. This understanding does make it a little bit easier to make the right decision. When our brain tells us to eat those potato chips, spend that extra money, or ingest that unhealthy substance, we can tell ourselves that this is a false alarm that is sounded by our limbic system that believes that we really need this to meet our basic needs. Myopia is the medical term for nearsightedness. Besides the classic visual myopia, we also experience myopia in other areas of our lives. Our tendency to be shortsighted affects our ability to make the right decision when faced with life challenges that pit the short-term benefit against the long-term gain. Examples of this on a societal level abound. According to Experian, a consumer credit reporting agency, the average American has a credit card debt of over six thousand dollars. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the rate of obesity in the United States is holding at about forty percent. The CDC also reports that as recently as 2016, about fifteen percent of American adults were smoking cigarettes. These are all examples of instant gratification blinding our decision making process. This concept is vividly illustrated by the following study. Subjects were given the choice between $100 dollars in 28 days, or $120 dollars 31 days. In this

Spatchcock Roasted Lemon Herb Chicken By Naomi Nachman
This is my favorite way to prepare and cook a whole chicken.
On my cooking show, “Sunny Side Up” on
Kosher.com, I had my friend, Ahuva Gottdiener (@homegrownkosher on Instagram), show us how to make her delicious sheet pan spatchcock chicken recipe. Ahuva shows us how to remove

out and butterflied for even cooking. As an
added bonus, this recipe also includes a builtin side dish. It really is a “winner, winner chicken dinner!”
Ingredients
b 1 whole chicken, spatchcocked (watch Ahuva’s appearance on my show “Sunny Side Up!” on Kosher.com to learn how to do this or buy it already spatchcocked at Gourmet Glatt) b 1-pound tiny baby potatoes (or 1-pound regular baby potatoes cut into 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch pieces) b 1-pound real baby carrots (NOT baby cut carrots) cut if necessary so no part is more than ½-inch thick
b 7 shallots, quartered b 1/3 cup minced parsley b 10 sprigs thyme, 5 left whole, leaves removed from 5 b 6 whole peeled cloves garlic, smashed b Zest of 1 lemon b 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided b Kosher salt b Freshly ground black pepper
Preparation 1.
Mix parsley, lemon zest and thyme leaves that were removed from the stem and set aside.
2. Place carrots, shallots, potatoes, 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper on a baking sheet and drizzle with two tablespoons olive oil. Mix well and spread out evenly. Place garlic cloves and whole sprigs of thyme on top of vegetables in the center third of the pan. 3. Drizzle spatchcocked chicken with remaining two tablespoons olive oil and rub into both sides of chicken. Season with salt and pepper. Rub with herbs and lemon zest on both sides and under skin where you can (reserving about two tablespoons of the herb mixture). 4.
Place chicken, skin side up, in the center of the pan, rearranging the thyme sprigs and garlic cloves if necessary so they are underneath the chicken. Sprinkle reserved herb mixture over vegetables that are not covered by the chicken.
5. Bake at 400°F for 50 minutes to one hour, until chicken breast is 165°F at thickest part. 6. Carve chicken and squeeze lemon juice over everything before serving.

higher in California than in Texas, right? California’s top income tax rate is 13.3%, while Texas charges (*checks notes*) nothing. That’s why half of California has moved to the Lone Star State in the last couple of years. Your mortgage dollar goes much farther
California’s income tax includes a generous refundable Earned Income Tax Credit for working families that wipes out a lot of the property and sales taxes they pay. For those reasons, the Washington-based Institute on Taxation and

in Austin than it did in Tiburon, too. (Californians looking to make Caitlyn Jenner the next governor might want to check if U-Haul is paying kickbacks to Gavin Newsom.) But for middle class earners, taxes are actually higher in Texas. How can that be? Texas raises most of its revenue from property and sales taxes, which hit upper-income earners less. Texas’s average property tax rate is more than double California’s. And
Economic Policy ranks Texas #2 in their “Terrible 10” most regressive state tax systems. (Don’t look so smug, Washington, you’re #1!) California ranks most equitable. Of course, the Golden State also serves residents an all-you-can-eat buffet of wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and mudslides. Life is full of trade-offs. You may be wondering how lowly sales taxes can make such a big difference between states. But they add up
fast. When was the last time you paid attention to the “sales tax” line on a register receipt? (If you’re shopping at CVS, you probably can’t even find it.) You can probably remember a time when online retailers like Amazon didn’t charge sales tax. But the Supreme Court’s 2018 Wayfair decision holding that states can charge sales taxes on out-of-state sellers, even with no in-state physical presence, opened the floodgates to new revenue. As for that proposal to nearly double taxes on capital gains, many observers have already pronounced it DOA – retroactive or not. The smart money says it may land somewhere in the neighborhood of 25%. That’s where we come in. We have a whole suite of strategies to minimize, defer, or even eliminate taxes when you sell your business, real estate, or other big-ticket assets. So call us regardless of where you’re planning to move, and we’ll help you take more with you!

axes were in the news this Memorial Day weekend: the new administration leaked word that the higher capital gains taxes included in their American Families Plan would be retroactive to April when they first rolled out the bill. That’s drawn predictable fire from the usual suspects on Team Red and the editorial staff at the Wall Street Journal. Raising that rate from 20% to 39.6% is obviously a big deal. But even if it happens, it would only affect gains on sales for taxpayers making over $1 million in a single year. That’s pretty elite company – just three out of every thousand Americans report earning that much. And those folks are concentrated in a handful of high-income, high-tax states, including 72,470 in California and 50,800 in New York. Alaska and West Virginia managed to scare up just 710 million-dollar earners each. But what if we told you taxing the rich isn’t where the real action is? What if we told you the tax man was like a sleight-of-hand artist, distracting your eye with a flash of his right hand while he hides a rabbit in his hat with his left? Everyone knows that taxes are

elieve it or not, when I was a kid, no one wore bike helmets. Wait, I take that back. Rough and tough “ride on the road” motorcyclists did. But, they were truly part of the real traffic flow so that made sense to us. Then again, they looked so tough we thought even the road would be afraid to hurt them. Made you wonder why they actually needed protection?! Still, back then, no respectable two-wheel riding cyclist would ever think they needed a helmet! It just wasn’t on anyone’s radar...until someone figured out that the head housed the brain, even when riding a non-motorized bicycle. However, when they first started requiring it, people were like: no way. It was just not something anyone was used to. Then, eventually, it slowly caught on... And then they started pushing it for skiers, too. I mean, seriously, that was a tough sell – half the pizazz of skiing was your outfit and a big part of the outfit was your hat! It was a difficult adjustment to switch to a helmet but we got there.
Today, everyone recognizes it’s a better idea to wear helmets... Well, at least every parent does! You still see kids riding, rip-sticking, or rollerblading without one. And every parent kind of wants to run over to them and wrap
all the bravado they had as a kid turns into anxiety and neurosis as a parent. One minute you’re the wild and crazy, irresponsible adolescent, and the next minute, you’re the one controlling all the behaviors of someone else!
It just wasn’t on anyone’s radar... until someone figured out that the head housed the brain, even when riding a non-motorized bicycle.
something protective around their heads. But kids think differently. They not opting to wear it comes from the security and naïveté of youth. They just seem to feel immortal. And that is kind of funny, because that’s just when every parent feels like killing them! A person actually knows they’ve transitioned to being a parent when
It seems that kids just force you to grow up in so many ways. And then it gets even more complex because then the kids start controlling the adult’s behaviors. One of the most disturbing turning points is when kids start curtailing their parent’s actions -which comes with that famous line usually delivered by a maturing youth: “You’re embarrassing me.”
Suddenly, you are under their microscope and they are deciding what’s appropriate for you! When that happens, you know you can’t just be who you want to be anymore when they are around. They have an image of what adultlike behavior is and suddenly your spontaneity is no longer in your domain. There is a youth committee out on what’s appropriate behavior for you! Here it was, you thought you were teaching them to be appropriate youngsters. And they are, it seems, teaching you to be appropriate adults! Ultimately, you can say they are starting to make sure you know the rules of showing up in life safely. In other words, they are kind of checking that you have your helmet on. And not just whether it’s on – but if it’s on the way they think is right. So, hats off to parents for being the best parents to their kids.
