Banchory beer festival 2015 programme
Contents
intro All the bars within the festival operate on a token based system. This allows you to purchase drinks tokens in one central point which can be used at all three bars. Having a token system in places speed up the bar services meaning less waiting time for you the customer. The tokens operate on a very simple currency. Two tokens equal either a pint of beer or cider, a gin & tonic, a rum & mixer or a glass of prosecco. All half pints are one token*. Tokens can be purchased with either cash or all types of debit/credit card at a rate of 5 tokens for £10 pounds. All the food vendors within the festival grounds operate on a cash only basis and don’t partake in the token system.
Since their first event last summer it has grown leaps and bounds in terms of size and demand. With the Banchory Beer Festival event Beer@theBarn in February there are now growing expectations as to what to expect from Summer 2015. Feedback has been clearly looked at to make the festival meet the needs of you, the customer. New additions include a prosecco bar, Scotland's first rum and having a family friendly Sunday to attract a larger age range of people. We hope you enjoy your time here today at Banchory Beer Festival and welcome any feedback, be it good or bad, as in order to improve our events we need feedback from you, our festival goers. Feel free to chat to any of us during the event and we'll be more than happy to chat/help.
We’d love you to get involved with us on social media during the festival so remember to check us on the following channels and share your images Banchory Beer Festival @banchorybeer Banchory Beer Festival & remember to tag us and use the hashtag #banchorybeerfestival All pictures and videos taken during the festival by our media teams will be available shortly afterwards on our Facebook page and website so remember to check them out!

The inaugural Banchory Beer Festival was in August 2014, set-up and run by two local brothers Mungo & Guy Finlayson. Since day one of their idea the aim has been to introduce quality local and national drink products not available widely in bars and restaurants to the event. Quality drinks have to go with quality food so using tried and tested food vendors they believe they are bringing some of the best ranges to suit all tastes to the festival. In particular they aim to support vendors who use local producers to supply their ingredients.

One Shot Distillation Only one percent of the worlds gin is made using one shot distillation, it is what we do at Warner Edwards. It means we add the correct amount of botanicals to our still for the amount of alcohol in the pot. We distill this through capturing all the essential oils and flavours of the botanicals and once finished we use the spring water from the farm to cut the 89% gin to bottle strength. Two shot Distillation 99% of the worlds gin is made this way and has been driven in modern times by efficiency. This process involves adding more botanicals to the pot at the start so that you distill a concentrate version of your gin. The gin that comes from the still is then used like an orange squash concentrate with industrial ethanol before the water is added. It is normally used as a 2% concentrate, so a mass produced bottle of gin 2% would be distilled as gin the remainder is industrial alcohol and water. The number of botanicals added is not linear so to make ten times the gin you wouldn’t necessarily add ten times the botanicals. This means you end up with less essential oil in the end product. Two shot is far more efficient and means you can explode the yield from your still. Sion and I believe that these gins are thinner on the pallet and less rounded in the mouth, more of the ethanol flavour comes through. Spring to Spirit The water we use from the farm was the source used by the Knights Hospitallus when they founded medieval fish ponds in the village, the earth works are still visible to this day. We use this fabulous water to distill with and to cut the spirit to bottle strength.

w.E.
w.E. Why W.E. are different When we started the distillery we realized very early that at the craft end of the market we needed to produce quality. The big boys take care of the volume end of the market and have the budgets to market an average product, we do not have a budget so the liquid must do the talking. The main reasons our liquid is so good are the processes we use, the water from the farm and the quality of our still.
Born from Curiosity Our still ‘Curiosity’ is an Arnold Holstein still with a 500 litre capacity, a 4.3 meter rectifying column with eight bubble plates, a deflegmator and a patented catalyzer. The main reason we chose Holstein was a perceived superior build quality and the patented catalyzer. The catalyzer sits on the top of the rectifying column and significantly increases the copper surface area. Copper absorbs acids and other nasties during the distillation process and that’s why the whole machine is made from copper and why our gin is so smooth.

Alechemy Alechemy brewing started brewing in premises in Livingston in the spring of 2012. The father and son team, Adam and James Davies, with their ten barrel brewery have come along way in a short time.
Specialising in Scottish and UK led design, The Wee Boorachie sells high quality crafts, handmade by UK based designer makers actively leading the way in promoting contemporary Scottish craft.
Not content with making a great range of carefully crafted beers and selling them locally they have expanded the range, the brewery and the staff. Their explosion on to the scene attracted a lot of attention including that of the head brewer from a well established Lothian’s brewery, Iain Cooper, who came and joined the team in October 2013. The brewery continues to go from strength to strength with inward investment, allowing the expansion of the brewing facilities to accommodate the imagination of the main brew team that now includes the assistant brewer Shaun Rogerson. All this expansion meant the paperwork needed full time attention so James employed his sister, Lynne Hope, to take over admin duties from his mum, Marion, who still gets drafted in at the busy times James and his dad still run the day to day tasks even taking to delivering the beer when needed.
The Wee Boorachie is now Online! Shop from the comfort of your own home at www.theweeboorachie.com
Concentrating mostly on pale ales their range always has something for every palate from the easy drinking lower ABV beers to the big hoppy specials they do most months. They always have a darker option such as their modern take on an 80 shilling, 10 Story Malt Bomb or Five Sisters a red IPA, one of the original 3 beers they made, in fact all 3 of the original beers are still being brewed today albeit that 2 have been re-branded as Ritual and Black Aye PA. A lot of hard work and outstanding talent goes into making these beers as I’m sure you’ll appreciate when you try one of their tasty West Lothian ales.
