4.........INTRO 10......TOKENS 12.......MUSIC 18......DRINKS 24........FOOD 30.....EVENTS
WELCOME Welcome to the Second Beer @ the Barn. The inaugural Banchory Beer Festival was in August 2014, set-up and run by two local brothers Mungo & Guy Finlayson. Since day one of their idea the aim has been to introduce quality local and national drink products not available widely in bars and restaurants to the event. Quality drinks have to go with quality food so using tried and tested food vendors they believe they are bringing some of the best ranges to suit all tastes to the festival. In particular they aim to support vendors who use local producers to supply their ingredients. We hope you enjoy your time here today at Banchory Beer Festival and welcome any feedback, be it good or bad, as in order to improve our events we need feedback from you, our festival goers. Feel free to chat to any of us during the event and we’ll be more than happy to chat/help. 4

All the bars within the festival operate on a token based system. This allows you to purchase drinks tokens at one central point which can be used at all three bars. Having a token system in place speeds up the bar services meaning less waiting time for you, the customer. The tokens operate on a very simple currency. Two tokens equal either a pint of beer or cider, a gin & tonic or a rum & mixer. All half pints are one token. Tokens can be purchased with either cash or all types of debit/credit card at a rate of 5 tokens for £10 pounds. All the food vendors within the festival grounds operate on a cash only basis and don’t partake in the token system. 10

We hope you enjoy all of our drinks. They have been hand selected for your enjoyment.
Cromarty Brewing Co – Cromaty, Ross-shire, Scotland 5. Hit the Lip – Blonde - 3.8% ABV It pours golden orange with a medium head. Lots of tropical fruit on the nose which moves to passion fruit with a medium carbonation all held together with a great malt backbone.
6. Brewed Awakening – Coffee Stout - 4.7% ABV Dark in colour with great floral coffee and roasted malts on the nose, it moves to a full and creamy palate with dark chocolate and more coffee. Spot on… if you’re a coffee fan.
7. Happy Chappy – Blonde - 4.1% ABV A rich golden colour with a distinct lemon and soft lime aroma, lots of citrus zing on the palate accompanied by a well balanced digestive biscuity back bone which finish with a touch of toffee lending itself to becoming very moreish…
8. Artic swell – Lager - 5.2% ABV Alechemy – Livingston, Scotland 1. Talisman – Lager - 4.1% ABV What we like to use as our house lager now as it’s just so sessionable. But it’s no ordinary lager, clean, bright and fresh.
2. Citra Burst – IPA - 5.4% ABV Light toffee notes and loads of fresh, grassy hops give way to a gentle bitterness and generous malt
3. EH54 – IPA - 5.7% ABV Packed with loads of American hops this is one for the IPA lovers. Bright citrus notes on the nose which is followed but a piney slight grapefruit palate. Big thumbs up to this one!
4. Blindside – Pale Ale - 3.7% ABV Being in the middle of the Six Nations rugby championship, this is rather apt. A lovely all day beer, a perfect starting point for your afternoon or evening. Pine and slight sweet malt on the nose which leads you to the lemon & orangey palate well, the finish is short and to the point leaving you wanting more… 16
This beer isn’t made yet…. Hopefully it’s ace like the rest of their beers!
Six Degrees North – Stonehaven, Scotland 9. Hop Classic – Belgian Style – 6.6% ABV Dried apricots and sweet butter scotch on the nose leads to a full palate of hoppy refreshment. The bitterness is well intergrated in the true Belgian style and it also has a pleasant kick at the end of it!
10. Honey Bee Good – Belgian Style - 6% ABV Amber in colour with a sweet malt and honey on the nose, the palate is more tangy honey with a hint of lemon. The slightly higher than average ABV on this one really helps to keep the sweetness under control.
Heretic Brewing Company – California, USA 11. Evil Cousin – Imperial IPA - 8% ABV
Hailing from sunny California this take on an American west coast IPA is a monster. It has heaps of in-your-face hops and is a very bold style. Its actually relatively light and easy to drink, having not forgotten the important malt back ground it really allows the hops to stand out. For those who cant get enough hops. We like to look after your best interests this monster only comes in half pints. Although it is a little more pricey then the rest.
Big Hug Brewing – London, England 12. Slow Loris – Session IPA - 4% ABV By using a load of Sorachi Ace hops it gives the nose a lovely lemony coconut aroma which moves to more bitter orange and tropical fruits on the palate. A great session beer!
St Andrews Brewing Company – St Andrews, Scotland 13. Big Red Rooster – Rye Beer – 4.5% ABV On the nose this has a lovely spicey note with a touch of smoke. As with any good rye beer this has a big full flavoured palate of slight dried fruits matched with a good amount of bitterness.
14. Oatmeal stout – Stout 4.5% ABV Dark in colour with a rich toasty almost slight coffee nose which moves to a long and lingering body on the palate which is all held together superbly by the creamy nature of this beer.
15. IPA – UK/USA Hybrid IPA – 5% ABV Trying to find a happy medium between the huge hoppy monsters of the west coast of America IPA’s and the soft more gentle English style has lead the team at St Andrews to this. A very well balanced IPA with both lots of hops and malt. Nose is lemon and toffee, which leads to a sweet malt and almost orange palate.
15. Wee Blonde – Blonde/Wheat – 3.7% ABV Soft lemon and slight pineapple on the nose, which opens to a very refreshing light malt body which is carried through by the under laying citrus tones of this beer. An all-day beer

1. Farmer Jim / Devon South – Medium 5% ABV Made using only apples from Jim Orchards in Deepest Devon cider country comes this lovely light golden medium cider. It starts with a crisp appley flavour with a subtle refreshing sweetness, its well balanced and very drinkable!
2. Farmer Jim - Rootin Tootin – Raspberry & Ginger - 4% ABV A spicy mix of real Devon cider, fresh ginger and tart raspberries helps to provide the perfect winter warmer, which has enough sweetness which is balanced well with the fresh ginger spiciness.
3. Lily’s Cider Barn – Rum Cider 4% ABV Made from a blend of bittersweet and medium apples along with a hint of rum helps create this smooth and mellow unfiltered cider.
4. Twisted Cider Wild Orchard – Sweet – 6% ABV Made using only wild apples picked from 40 year old trees on the Dorset Somerset Border this cider is born. Its rich colour draws you in and tempts you to have a smell of the sweetness contained within. It has a fresh apple start with a lovely sticky finish. Yum yum
5. Gwynt Y Ddraig – Black Dragon – Oak aged 7% ABV Special reserve welsh cider hand crafted exclusively from cider apples grown by traditional in ageing orchards. Once the apples have been hand-picked then fermented it is then matured in oak barrels which helps produce a cider rich in body and colour and has a wonderfully complex palate. Oooft full deece.
6. Glebe Farm – Side R – Elderfower – 6.5% ABV From the heart of Cambridgeshire comes this light and delicate cider a perfect starting point before working in to the more serious big hitters.
1.Warner Edwards – Harrington Sloe Gin / 30% ABV A fabulously fruity gin infused with handpicked sloes from the local countryside- we suggest you try this with summer house lemonade.
2. Warner Edwards - Victorian’s Rhubarb 40% ABV Fabulous rhubarb extract (with royal connections!) is combined with our Harrington dry gin & just enough sugar to balance the acidity. The result is a rumbustious gin with a big burst of rhubarb which is a glory on its own & beautiful with either tonics.
3. Isle of Harris – Sugar Kelp infused (Essentially it’s healthy… ish) 45% ABV Very refreshing Gin with a good classic bitter juniper hit, followed with fresh cut herbs and fruit which is slightly grapefruit, mango and orange. The introduction of sugar kelp leads to a lovey dry flinty finish which leads its self to the maritime history of the island. Perfect which Walter Gregors Tonic!
4. Porter’s – Aberdeen Gin 41.5% ABV The first Gin to be distilled in Aberdeen for over 200 years! The modern take on a classic style makes for the perfect starting point and a wonderful celebration of something local. The main stand out flavour of Porters is Budda’s Hand a dried citrus fruit which gives the gin a crisp citrus element backed up by a solid juniper body.
5. Duncan Taylor – Indian Summer 46% ABV Another great local fairly un-known gin, from Huntly. Indian Summer uses a clever combination of citrus fruit and spices to lead to a fairly unique tasting gin (in a good way of course!!)
20
1. Dark Matter Distillers - Spiced Rum 40% ABV Scotland’s first rum distillery, produced no more than half a mile from the beer festival side it is full of Christmas spice and nutmeg along with a big hit of ginger. Now this is how spiced rum should be!
1. BUNDABERG GINGER BEER 2. FEVERTREE STANDARD TONIC 3. FEVERTREE LIGHT TONIC 4. WALTER GREGOR TONIC 5. ORGANIC LEMONADE
It’s 12 years since a farmers’ market returned to Banchory, taking its rightful place in a town which would have had markets stretching back to medieval times. The markets of those days would have entailed days of travelling and the sale of livestock rather than hygienically packaged cuts of meat and Mexican street food, but the principle remains the same. On the third Saturday of every month, Banchory’s Bellfield Car Park in the centre of the town plays host to a rising number of excellent quality local producers, in fact 27 stallholders participated in the November and December markets These range from meat, fish and game to bread, olives and vegetables, and include artisan macaroons, homebakes and jam. Wark Farm’s excellent pork pies are a must, as is the new stall Fresh Mex – selling Mexican street food. You can get a fresh coffee, an ice cream from a chap in a boater and striped blazer, locally made cheese and quails’ eggs for a posh picnic. The market was begun by Linda and Graham Clark, and was originally held in Scott Skinner Square. After ten years, the Square was designated for an upgrade, so an alternative site was found – and the market has never looked back. “Increased visibility from the main road and easy parking are just two of the advantages of the new site,” says David Ritchie, the Farmers’ Market manager. “We like to say that you can get everything you need for a meal at the market now, along with some great extras such as plants. We now have coffee and street food so there are reasons to stick around a bit longer, plus we plan to have entertainment whenever we can.” Each market sees new producers eager to take a stall, so the market looks set to keep on improving. There are opportunities for local businesses and community organisations to have a stall, showcasing their wares or cause to upwards of 400 people at each market.
Previous successes have included pumpkin carving, ceramic decorating and fundraising for local charities. The market has also recently run a competition to design its own shopping bags. David runs the market with the help of market assistant Lauren and recently retired from a management position in a major supermarket chain. He says, “The two jobs couldn’t be more different, with the market we’re getting back to basic principles – good produce and good customer service, with a firm focus on fresh and local. People love to be able to interact with the producer of their food, and to be able to build a relationship through a monthly market is something special.” Anyone wishing to find out more should visit the Banchory Farmers Market Facebook page or www.visitbanchory.com.
