After all that training, you can sit down and taste one of the most famous of Catalan products: sausages. This traditional food has been reinvented by leading chefs from the region.

We also have the privilege of interviewing one of the most international film directors from Spain, Isabel Coixet, who gives us details about her latest movie.

Die spanische Schauspielerin Paz Vega ist einer der wichtigsten LatinStars in Hollywood. Sie fing mit Fernsehsendungen an und wurde mit Siete vidas (Sieben Leben), einer Friends-ähnlichen, in Spanien sehr beliebten Sitcom bekannt, in der sie Laura spielt, ein verwöhntes, unbedarftes Mädchen, ähnlich Jennifer Aniston als Rachel Green. Ihr Fernseherfolg führte zur Hauptrolle in Lucía y el Sexo (Lucia und der Sex), einem Film, für den sie 2001 mit dem Goya-Preis als beste neue Schauspielerin ausgezeichnet wurde. Sie war auch die bekannteste femme fatale der spanischen Tradition in Carmen, einem Film des spanischen Filmemachers Vicente Aranda. Er ist ein berühmter spanischer Fotograf, der mit internationalen Künstlern wie Shakira oder Alejandro Sanz gearbeitet hat. De Laiguana ist ein multidisziplinärer Künstler: Er hat als Fotograf, Art Director, Designer und sogar als Musikproduzent gearbeitet.

Seine Berufsweg begann in der Werbewelt, wo er die Produktion vieler Musik-Videos leitete, wie die der berühmten Sängerin Shakira mit Don’t bother, Gipsy (mit Tennisspieler Rafel Nadal) und Loca. In seiner weiteren Laufbahn gewann der Fotograf ein mehr sozial engagiertes Profil in dem Versuch, die Schönheit in der sozialen Unvollkommenheit und in den Benachteiligten abzubilden. He is a famous Spanish photographer who has also collaborated with international artists like Shakira and Alejandro Sanz. In fact, De Laiguana is a multidisciplinary artist: he has worked as a photoprapher, art

director, and designer and even as a record producer.He started his career in the world of advertising and has directed many music videos, especially with worldwide famous singer Shakira, who he directed in video hits like Don’t Bother, Gypsy (featuring tennis player Rafa Nadal) and Loca. Later in his career, the photographer adopted a more socially committed profile, aiming to portray the beauty in social imperfections and in those who are less fortunate. It is by means of this particular point of view that he tries to make a protest and denounce social injustices, while donating the benefits of his published works to social causes like the fight against AIDS and the protection of our environment.

– Molins.

Vielleicht haben Sie sie vorher noch nie gesehen, aber für viele KinoKritiker ist Maria Molins eine der spanischen Schauspielerinnen mit der größten Zukunft im spanischen Kino. Im Jahr 2012 sah man sie im Film El bosc (Der Wald), einer fantastischen Geschichte im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg, Regie Oscar Aibar. Molins spielt die Hauptrolle als starke Frau, die die republikanischen Werte verkörpert. Der Film basiert auf dem Roman des Bestsellerautors Albert Sánchez- Piñol und wurde als einer der besten katalanischen Filme auf dem Internationalen Filmfest 2012 in Sitges gefeiert.

Molins spielte auch in Fill de Cain (Kains Sohn) mit, einem Film von Regisseur Jesus Monllaó, als Premiere gezeigt auf dem Filmfestival Malaga.

Die Schauspielerin war auch in vielen spanischen TV-Serien wie Olor de Colònia (Duft des Parfüms). Eingedenk der Tatsache, dass sie eine der gefragtesten Schauspielerinnen ist, hat Molins kürzlich erklärt, „das wird das intensivste Jahr meiner Karriere“.

You might have not seen her before, but many cinema critics tap Maria Molins as one of the Spanish actresses with the biggest future in this country’s cinema. In 2012 she starred in the movie El Bosc (Forest), a fantasty

story set in the Spanish Civil War directed by Oscar Aibar. Molins plays the leading role of a strong woman who embodies the Republican values of the time. The film is based on the novel by the bestseller author Albert SánchezPiñol and was received as one of the best Catalan films presented in the 2012 edition of the Sitges International Film Festival. Molins has also participated in Fill de Cain (Son of Cain), a film directed by Jesus Monllaó presented as a premier in the Malaga Film Festival. The actress has also acted in many Spanish TV series as Olor de Colònia (The Scent of the Perfume). Isabel – This has been a busy year for director Isabel Coixet. She just received an award for her career in Malaga Film Festival, where they presented a documentary about her work. After presenting Nobody Wants the Night starring Juliette Binoche some months ago, she now comes back with Learning to Drive, an optimistic story about the healing process of meeting others. We spoke to her to discuss the insights of a movie about a recently separated woman from Manhattan played by Patricia Clarkson who takes driving lessons with a Sikh political refugee driving instructor played by Ben Kingsley.

– Das war ein ereignisreiches Jahr für Regisseurin Isabel Coixet. Sie hat gerade eine Auszeichnung auf dem Filmfestival Malaga für ihr Schaffen erhalten, wo man eine Dokumentation über ihre Arbeit gezeigt hat. Nach der Präsentation von Nobody wants the night mit Juliette Binoche vor einigen Monaten, ist sie nun zurück mit Learning to drive, einer optimistischen Geschichte über die heilende Wirkung anderer Menschen. Wir sprechen mit ihr über die Erkenntnisse eines Films über eine geschiedene Frau aus Manhattan (Patricia Clarkson), die Fahrstunden mit einem Sikh, einem politischen Flüchtling und Fahrlehrer (Ben Kingsley) nimmt.

How did the idea for Learning to Drive start?

It came about one day after the shooting of Elegy. I was eating with the actors Patricia and Ben, and she was telling us about this amazing story she had read in The New Yorker. She said it was her dream to shoot the story with us.

After reading it, we couldn’t have agreed more.

Wie fing das an mit Learning to Drive?

Es ergab sich eines Tages nach dem Dreh von Elegy. Ich war Essen mit den Schauspielern Patricia und Ben, und sie erzählte uns von der erstaunlichen Geschichte, die sie im New Yorker gelesen hatte. Sie sagte, es wäre ihr Traum, diesen Film mit uns zu drehen. Nach der Lektüre musste ich ihr zustimmen.

“LEARNING TO DRIVE REFLECTS THE HUGE RACISM IN THE UNITED STATES AND ALSO PEOPLE’S FEAR OF THE OTHER” „LEARNING TO DRIVE SPIEGELT DEN GEWALTIGEN RASSISMUS IN DEN USA WIEDER UND AUCH DIE ANGST VOR DEM ANDEREN“ This happened 8 years ago. Why did it take so long?

There were many times where it seemed we would begin shooting, but then it was stopped again. Once they asked me if I would do the movie with another actress in the main role, but I wouldn’t do that.

The movie script has some differences compared to the original story. Why? You’re right. Sarah Kernochan changed the nationality of the main character. In the article he’s Filipino, but in the movie he’s a Sikh. She did so because there is a huge Sikh community living in Queens, a lot of them working as taxi drivers and instructors.

What did you like the most about the story?

I really liked the way it ended. And I was captured by the story of a man trying to maintain his culture in a country that accepted him as a political refugee.

Did you learn a lot about Sikh culture?

I did! To tell you the truth, I had no idea about it before the movie. We were living with people from Richmond Hill; we went to a Sikh wedding... I also had the opportunity to meet women from arranged marriages. Some of them were successful, and others had experienced huge disasters. Just like our marriages!

Das war vor 8 Jahren. Warum hat es so lange gedauert?

Es sah viele Male so aus, als würden wir mit dem Dreh beginnen, aber dann wurde wieder unterbrochen. Ich wurde auch einmal gefragt, ob ich den Film mit einer anderen Schauspielerin in der Hauptrolle machen wollte, aber ich wollte nicht.

Das Filmscript weist Unterschiede zur Originalgeschichte auf. Warum?

Da haben Sie Recht. Sarah (Kernochan) veränderte die Nationalität der Hauptrolle. Im Artikel ist er Philippino, aber im Film Sikh. Der Grund war, dass es eine riesige Sikhgemeinde in Queens gibt, viele von ihnen arbeiten als Taxifahrer und Fahrlehrer.

Was gefiel Ihnen am besten an der Geschichte?

Mir gefiel sehr, wie sie ausging. Und ich war gefesselt von der Geschichte eines Mannes, der versucht, seine Kultur zu behalten in einem Land, das ihn als politischen Flüchtling akzeptiert hatte.

Haben Sie viel über die Sikh-Kultur gelernt?

Ja! Um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich vor dem Film keine Ahnung davon. Wir lebten mit Menschen von Richmond Hill, wir waren auf einer Sikh-Hochzeit… Ich konnte auch Frauen in arrangierten Ehen treffen. Einige waren erfolgreich, andere ein Desaster. Wie unsere Ehen!

Sie sagten, dass der Film eine Kritik an der Ignoranz sei.

Wie wir im Film zeigen, nennen viele Menschen sie noch immer „Bin Laden“ und lachen über den Turban. Das passiert jeden Tag. Wie Katha Pollit, die Autorin des Originalartikels sagte: „Wir sind immer 25 Zentimeter vom Taxifahrer entfernt, aber wir wissen nichts über ihn“.

Der Film hat viel Humor. Wie war es für Sie, als das Publikum während der Aufführung im Toronto Film Festival lachte?

Es war erstaunlich. Ich hatte den Film nur im Schneideraum mit Telma gesehen, es war also das erste Mal auf der großen Leinwand. Das Feedback vom Publikum ist unglaublich.

Telma ist eine der berühmtesten Cutterinnen der USA. Wie war die Arbeit mit ihr?

Sie ist beeindruckend. Wir arbeiteten die ganze Nacht und sie erzählte mir all diese Geschichten des Drehs von Taxi Driver. Das machte mich unglaublich glücklich!

You have said that the movie is a criticism of ignorance.

The film reflects the huge racism in The United States and also people’s fear of the other. In fact, the Sikh community suffers from a lot of racism. As we show in the film, many people still call them “Bin Laden” and make fun of their turbans. This happens every day. As Katha Pollitt, the author of the original article, told me: “We are always 25 centimetres from the taxi driver but we don’t know anything about him”.

In the movie there is a lot of humour.

How did you feel when the audience was laughing during its screening in the Toronto Film Festival?

It was amazing. I had only seen the film in the editing room with Thelma, so it was the first time seeing it on the big screen. It was incredible to see that it connected with the audience.

Thelma is one of the most prestigious editors in United States. What was working with her like?

She’s impressive. We would be working all night long and she would tell me all these stories about shooting Taxi Driver. This made me incredibly happy!

What have you learned from her?

I’ve learned to better structure the story, and to cut when you need to. I usually like long scenes, but she showed me how important it is to cut at the right time.

Apart from being the director, you are also the camerawoman. Why? It really helps me to create a bond with the actors, to explore intimacy in a more direct way.

It is important for me to share the same space as the crew, to be there with them and not be looking through a monitor some metres ahead.

Why is it important to learn?

For me it is fundamental; it is part of my DNA. It’s something that gives me hope, because it breaks many prejudices. As Frank Capra said, “The only important thing is that your movie doesn’t leave viewers indifferent”.

Was it difficult to shoot inside a taxi?

It was really challenging. It was very hot, as we couldn’t turn on the air conditioning. I had to ask everyone to use deodorant!

I loved shooting there. I didn’t want to do a postcard of the city, even if it’s tempting. I wanted to show the real New York, the one where normal people live.

We visit the six chosen Spanish places to discover what makes them so special.

— Cittaslow movement defends a sustainable tourism that highlights the most deeply rooted traditions of every place. In Spain, only six towns have achieved this distinction, in part because they have fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, are friendly to tourists and promote the consumption of local products.

But what makes places such as Lekeitio in Biscay and Rubielos de Mora in Teruel so special? We give you some hints.

THE FISHING PORT

The Mexican painter Diego Rivera was so taken by Lekeitio’s landscape that he did several paintings of the town, such as Lekeitio Church.

This fishing village on the coast of Biscay also attracted Hapsburg Empress Zita and Isabel II. Lekeitio is considered a slow city because it promotes traditional recipes and popular songs.

Its cobbled streets hide treasures such as the Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, the Zahar Tower and the picturesque harbour with colourful boats. Here you will also find the oldest Basque Txakoli, the Bizkaiko Txakolina, — Die CittaSlow Bewegung steht für einen nachhaltigen Tourismus, der die tief wurzelnden Traditionen jedes dieser Orte wertschätzt. A global movement In order to understand the origins of Cittaslow movement we have to take a look at the Slow Food organization. Founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986, it promotes the preservation of traditional and regional cuisine as an alternative to fast food. Cittaslow movement was founded in Italy some years later, in 1999, with the idea of preserving local traditions and promoting sustainable ways of life. Towns must accomplish 50 principles in order to be recognised as Cittaslow.

These include environmental consciousness, the promotion of cultural diversity, improving citizens’ quality of life and resisting globalization. According to the Slow movement, cities become better spaces to live when they slow down their overall pace and embrace their uniqueness.

Rubielos de Mora has been awarded the European Union Europa Nostra award, which recognizes the conservation of its historical sites.

CUBAN ESSENCE IN GIRONA

Strangely, Begur reminds visitors of Cuba. And there is a reason for this: during the nineteenth century, many citizens went to the Caribbean island to work and came back and built similar colonial houses. To commemorate this past, Begur organizes an Indians Fair each September, with concerts of Cuban music and documentaries about the legacy of American culture in the city.

In Begur we also find the origin of the term ‘Costa Brava’ referring to the rocky shoreline of Fornells cove.

Don’t miss the area’s restaurants, where you can taste “sea and mountain” rice and rockfish.

MEDIEVAL BACKGROUND

LEKEITIO’S COBBLED STREETS HIDE TREASURES SUCH AS THE BASILICA OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY it transports visitors to medieval times with it narrow streets and walled doors with wrought knockers.

In August, the citizens of Rubielos de Mora dress up as knights, rogues and minstrels and recreate dances and medieval dishes. It is known that inhabitants leave their house doors open and appreciate the traditions and crafts of ancient times. The Tower of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Covent of the Augustinian are two of its most emblematic monument.

GASTRONOMIC FARMHOUSES

Located in the Basque Country, Mungia has managed to convert a XVI Century farmhouse into an amusement park about Basque culture. Landetxo Goikoa is the oldest farmhouse of Biscay and also a museum where we can learn about Basque beliefs and superstitions and walk around the first amusement park on the mythology of the region, the Izenaduba Basoa.

Through gastronomy, Mungia promotes agricultural biodiversity and the contact between consumers and producers. Many farmhouses from the eighteenth century – such as Aurrekoetxe and Aritxi - are now restaurants that offer grilled meats and local dishes such as mungiako taloa, a local cornmeal cake.

For a slow city, it is important to have parks, squares and friendly architecture. This is one of the main reasons why Bigastro, a town of Alicante known for its hiking trails and city parks, has made it onto the list.

The town is committed to alternative energy initiatives such as the Ecopark and the Connect: More than Wi-Fi project, which benefits both locals and tourists.

Another interesting initiative is the traditional orchard, a space for those who want to walk between orange, fig and palm trees and experience the farming culture of the people.

In the late twentieth century, the technique was perfected and launched in the Scandinavian country as a form of self-training for skiing during summer months. At the end of 1997, Marko Kantaneva launched the first sticks to practise this activity and it quickly became a huge success.

LEARNING TO WALK The technique must be learned correctly in order to take advantage of all its benefits. An instructor is required only at the beginning or if you want to raise the level. Once you feel autonomous, you can continue the sessions alone or in groups, as Nordic Walking is a great sport to socialize and meet new people.

If you practise it in natural surroundings such as the beach or the mountain, it also helps reduce stress and increases the feeling of general wellbeing.

There are currently three different learning disciplines to master this

technique: in ten, seven and three steps depending on the intensity.

It is recommended to practise it for at least a couple of hours per day five times a week. On long walks, it is essential to bring a bottle of water or other liquid, as it is important to hydrate the body every thirty minutes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STICKS Nordic Walking sticks are not used for support, but to give impetus to the walker. The movements must be comprehensive and the palm should be wide open when we push the sticks. Generally made of aluminium or carbon fibre, the sticks have an ergonomic handle that fits in the hand. As for the shoes, they should be comfortable and resistant to promote comfortable walking.

This Finnish technique is a good option that allows people to balance mind and body, as it is considered by many doctors as one of the most

complete and beneficial sports for health. Moreover, it gives them a sense of vitality and happiness –as exercise increases the production of endorphins- and promotes easy-todo physical activity.

Simply find an interesting walk at any time of day or replace short car trips with pleasant walks with sticks. And, since you are in Spain, take advantage of the coastline and walk along it with your Nordic Walking sticks.

— Víctor Serna and Xabi Zirikian started this adventure in the fashion business in 1995. Víctor had just finished a degree in business administration and Xabi worked in industrial engineer designing airplane wings. However, they had something in common: their passion for surf. The two friends from Irún, a small village located in the Basque Country, started designing urban clothes for those who wanted to be comfortable while wearing original, local designs. 20 years ago, they established a surfer wear shop in the port of San Sebastian. And the story had just begun.

DEVOTION TO FLOWERS You only need to take a look at Loreak Mendian’s blog to find the creative inspiration for its collections. Contemporary artists, music festivals, classic movies and the latest surf trends are among the main influences in its work.

The name of the brand tells us a lot about its intentions: written in Basque, it means “the flowers from the hill”, taking into consideration not only the roots of the company but also a symbol that is clearly related to surf culture. At the beginning of their adventure, many Spanish teenagers wore t-shirts with the representative slogan of the brand -a white graffiti daisy -. But Loreak Mendian has now developed an appeal for a more mature audience and changed its logo to a more sophisticated design.

Known as ‘Jon’, it is a tribute to Bauhaus aesthetics and dominoes.

However, most of its clothing collections are inspired by elements of Basque culture, for instance traditional fishing, cooking and local sports, as well as representative local politicians such as Sabino Arana.

Many visitors buy the clothes as a souvenir, as many t-shirts have iconic images from the region.

QUALITY CLOTHING The Spanish fashion brand is not only known for its amusing designs but also for the quality of its fabrics.

In fact, this is one of its main focuses, as all its clothes for men, women and children are locally produced and have handcrafted details.

MOST OF THEIR CLOTHING COLLECTIONS ARE INSPIRED BY ELEMENTS OF BASQUE CULTURE — Víctor Serna und Xabi Zirikian begannen 1995 ihr Abenteuer im Modegeschäft. Víctor hatte eben seinen Betriebswirtschaftsabschluss gemacht und Xabí entwarf Flugzeugtragflächen als IndustrieIngenieur. Aber sie hatten etwas gemeinsam: Ihre Leidenschaft für Surfen.

Fresh and simple, it offers light fabrics and bright colours inspired by the seaside, camping stayovers and road trip experiences. Moreover, the apparel and accessory collections are available from multi-brand retailers in the UK, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Greece, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Russia and Japan.

Few products identify with Catalan gastronomy as much botifarras and llonganisas do. Their slightly spicy taste is becoming a gastronomic trend in the hands of the best chefs.

— Although sausages already existed in ancient Greece, the Romans are considered to be the first to use mince mixed with herbs as a stuffing. This civilization developed a real taste for this technique, which closely resembles the one used in today’s Catalan sausages.

In recent years, however, this food made with lean meat, a small amount of fat, salt and pepper has become an excuse to investigate new combinations, flavours and aromas.

Specialist butchers, fast food chains and Michelin starred restaurants are proposing new ways to cook and serve them with a touch of sophistication.

GASTRONOMIC REINVENTION Michelin-starred chefs such as Víctor Trochi are making their own Catalan sausage innovations within the parameters of haute cuisine.

In Les Magnolies restaurant in Girona (www.lesmagnolies.com), the acclaimed chef stews sausages with cinnamon and citrus and covers them with béchamel, mushrooms and caramelised apple slices. He has also created an outstanding dessert with sausage sponge cake, black garlic ice cream, liquorice icing and rice pudding foam. His recipes demonstrate that traditional ingredients can also be transformed into modern dishes.

Catalan sausages are also on the street, thanks to initiatives such as Mr. Frank & the Butis (mrfrankandthebutis.com). They serve sausages when catering at private parties, and they also visit festivals with a hipster van that has become trendy on social networks.

Another sausage food truck is Yango Urban Food created by recognised chef Carlos Abellan (www.carlesabellan.es/ yango). It aims to transfer the hotdog experience to Catalan sausages called “llonganisa” whichh are made with meat, salt and pepper-.

We can also find restaurants devoted to this food as is the case of Butikfarra (www.butikfarra.com), a restaurant with specialities such as black rice sausage with cuttlefish and lamb sausage with crispy breadcrumbs.

On the other hand, Butifarring (www.butifarring.com) cooks the sausages on the grill and offers Spanish omelette sausage and specialities with tasty blue cheese from Muntanyola.

Creativity has without a doubt invaded the world of Catalan sausages.

What does it mean?

It comes from the word ‘llonganisa’, which is a typical Catalan sausage.

We wanted to make it international, so we used the phonetic diminutive Yango. And we chose the “y” instead of the “i” to make it look cooler, to give it a Quentin Tarantino touch.

Your slogan is “The Catalan yangonissa travelling around the world”. Why do you want to make it famous?

The idea is to make llonganisa as global as we can. This is why we offer different ingredients and combinations from around the globe. It is also a way to give value to a product that I personally admire.

Of all of them, which is your favorite one?

I love the Peruvian one, because it reminds me of the trip I made to that country. It has huancaína sauce, yellow pepper, red onion and cilantro.

Galician style octopus

Pulpo a la gallega has been consumed in Galicia for many centuries. Its original name is pulpo a feira, which means “fair style octopus”. The name comes from the fact that ancient farmers would sell their products in cattle fairs and buy special groceries such as octopus. The dish is prepared by boiling the molluscs in copper cauldrons and adding olive oil and paprika, usually accompanied by finely sliced potatoes. It is usually served on wooden plates, and it is best to taste it in the provinces of Lugo and Ourense.

Galizischer Tintenfisch Pulpo a la gallega wird in Galizien seit vielen Jahrhunderten gegessen. Der Originalname ist pulpo a feira, was „Jahrmarkt Tintenfisch“ bedeutet. Der Name stammt aus der Zeit, als frühere Bauern ihre Produkte auf Viehmärkten verkauften und spezielle Lebensmittel wie Tintenfisch kauften. This tasty tuberous crop can be eaten alone, accompanied by a sauce, or alongside meat or fish dishes. We have selected two of the lesser known recipes made with locally grown potatoes.

Papas antiguas

The name of this typical Canarian dish is not very appealing. Translated as “ancient potatos”, they are supposed to be as tasty as those that came from Latin America to the Peninsula in the 15th century. The island of Tenerife has the highest number of varieties, about 40, and they are grown at an altitude up to 1,200m. They are boiled in water with plenty of salt, an ingredient that makes their skins wrinkle up. Lièger Fleischbällchen Ingredients: • 1 kilo of minced beef or mixed beef and pork mince • 5 finely chopped onions • 1 bunch of chopped parsley • 2 eggs • Salt and pepper • Butter and oil •Breadcrumbs •Brown sugar • Vinegar • Sirop de Liège (it can be replaced with thick apple, pear or plum jam) • Laurel • Thyme • Corinth raisins and cornstarch Zutaten • 1 Kilo gemischtes Hackfleisch (RindSchwein) • 5 fein gehackte Zwiebeln • 1 Bund gehackte Petersilie • 2 Eier • Salz und Pfeffer • Butter and Öl • Semmelbrösel • Brauner Zucker • Essig • Lièger Sirup (oder dicke Apfel, Birnen oder Zwetschen marmelade) • Lorbeer • Thymian • Korinthen und Maisstärke

•Mix the bread crumbs with the finely chopped onion, parsley, meat and two eggs until achieving a smooth mass.

• Make the meatballs about the size of a fist. Fry in oil.

•Put the butter with the remaining chopped onions in a separate pot.

Add a pinch of thyme.

•When the onion is soft, add 4 tablespoons of brown sugar to caramelize it. Then add a dash of vinegar.

•Incorporate the meatballs, add water to cover and two tablespoons of Sirop de Liège.

• Add salt and pepper to your own taste and two bay leaves. Let it simmer for half an hour.

• Add the Corinth raisins and two teaspoons of cornstarch. Let it simmer for another half hour.

The pleasure of taking a nap Die Freuden eines Nickerchens

Some people only opt for a nap if they are very tired. For others, an afternoon sleep is essential to move on with the day. Why do we like taking a siesta so much?

Manche Menschen legen sich nur hin, wenn sie sehr müde sind. Andere brauchen den Schlaf, um den Tag gut zu überstehen. Warum mögen wir die siesta so gerne?

— Taking a nap is a habit commonly associated with babies, children or the elderly. It seems like adults are only allowed to take a nap during the weekend or when they are on holidays.

However, many scientific studies have shown that taking a nap regularly has beneficial effects on health. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health and the Medical School of the University of Athens, naps may reduce coronary heart mortality up to 37%. Other research carried out by scientists at Berkeley, the University of California, states that an afternoon nap can refresh our mind and boost our brain power.

Experts disagree on the ideal duration of a nap. A nap between 10 or 20 minutes, also called turbonap, is enough to recover our energy and keep our ability to react intact; depending on our job, a longer nap might leave us too drowsy to work efficiently. In any case, it is recommended not to exceed 90 minutes of napping, which would represent a full sleep cycle… that would make it difficult for us to sleep at night!

NAPPING AROUND THE WORLD Indeed, the siesta is one of the most international traditions of Spanish culture, often related to the calm of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Yet Spain is not the only country in which taking a nap after lunch is common. This habit is cultivated in other countries in Southern Europe and Latin America (due to the Spanish influence), where employees stop working at lunchtime and business owners close their doors, go home for lunch and then go back work after having eaten and rested for a while.

In South-Eastern Asia, it is very common to take a nap during the working day. In Bangladesh they call it bhat-ghum, which literally means “rice-sleep”. Be it because of the intense midday heat or the result of a large meal, closing your eyes and laying down on a soft surface seems to be the most effective way to recharge the batteries. In Japan, they have created “nap salons” where people pay to have a quick rest away from the hustle and bustle

of city life, whereas in China a midday rest is a constitutional right.

‘IBERIAN YOGA’ It is true nonetheless that some of the greatest personalities of all times were very fond of taking a nap after a productive morning of work: artists like Leonardo da Vinci, composers like Johannes Brahms, inventors like Thomas Edison and political leaders like Winston Churchill and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The French Emperor even used to sleep in the middle of a battle.

Spanish artists and intellectuals like Salvador Dalí and Camilo José Cela were great defenders of the siesta, which the Spanish writer described as “Iberian yoga”.

Der Mittagsschlaf ist ein Erbe der Römer, wenigstens nach dem spanischen Wort: es kommt vom lateinischen “sechste Stunde”, die sechste Stunde des Sonnenlichts, zwischen Mittag und 3 Uhr nachmittags. Während der Mittagszeit unterbrachen die Römer ihre Arbeit, um zu essen, auszuruhen und Energie zu tanken. Später, im 6. Jahrhundert, schuf Benedikt von Nursia seine Regeln, die eine Reihe von Pflichten für die Mönche je nach Tageszeit festlegten. Nach diesen Regeln musste die sechste Stunde der Ruhe gewidmet sein… kein Wunder, dass er zum Schutzheiligen der siesta erklärt wurde.

In Ancient times…

The afternoon nap is a legacy from Ancient Romans, or at least the Spanish word is: it comes from the Latin “sixth hour”, which referred to the sixth hour of sunlight, that is between noon and 3pm. During the midday hours, Romans stopped working to eat, rest a little and recover energy. A few centuries later, in the 6th century, Saint Benedict of Nursia created the Benedictine rules, which established a series of duties for the monks to follow depending on the hours of the day. According to these rules, the sixth hour had to be devoted to rest. It is no wonder he was declared patron of the siesta.

Auf jeden Fall sollte man 90 Minuten nicht überschreiten, denn das wäre ein kompletter Schlafzyklus… das würde das Einschlafen in der Nacht erschweren!

DAS NICKERCHEN IM REST DER WELT Die siesta ist eine der international am bekanntesten Traditionen der spanischen Kultur. Man verbindet sie mit dem entspannten mediterranen Lebensstil. Aber Spanien ist nicht das einzige Land, in dem ein Mittagsschläfchen üblich ist.

Dieser Brauch wird auch in anderen

südeuropäischen Kulturen und in Lateinamerika (spanischer Einfluss) gepflegt, wo die Menschen zur Mittagszeit aufhören zu arbeiten, Geschäfte ihre Türen schließen, alle zum Essen nachhause gehen, und nach dem Essen und einer Ruhepause zurückkehren.

In Süd-Ost-Asien ist ein Schläfchen während des Arbeitstages normal. In Bangladesh nennt man es bhat-ghum, was wörtlich „Reis-Schlaf“ heißt. Ob intensive Mittagshitze oder das Ergebnis eines ausgedehnten Mittagessens – sich hinzulegen und die Augen zu schließen scheint die effektivste Methode zu sein, die Batterien wieder aufzuladen.

In Japan hat man „Schlafräume“ geschaffen, für die man bezahlt, um sich eine kleine Pause weg von der Hektik des Stadtlebens zu gönnen. How gum disease treatment can prevent heart disease

Dancing tango benefits Parkinson’s patients

A team of scientists at Forsyth Institute and Boston University have discovered that the use of oral treatments to reduce the inflammation caused by periodontitis (commonly known as gum disease) helps to prevent vascular inflammation and can lower the risk of having heart attacks. This discovery underscores the important connection between mouth and heart, and reinforces the theory that oral health is an essential factor to prevent heart disease. Information: forsyth.org

This is the conclusion reached by researchers from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital and the McGill University Health Centre, after carrying out a study in which 40 people with Parkinson’s disease took tango lessons with professional teachers for 12 weeks.

Researchers wanted to find out whether a physical activity linked to music and rhythm could have therapeutic value for patients, focusing on how their motor abilities progressed throughout the experiment. They discovered that tango helped to improve balance and functional mobility, while combining physical exercise with music increased the patients’ motivation and enjoyment of the therapy. Stronger muscles make for healthier bone development

Lesions in our DNA can occur as often as 100,000 times per cell and per day: normal metabolic activities as well as the exposure to environmental factors can damage our genetic data. During the process of DNA replication, roadblocks frequently threaten the transmission of genetic code, which may lead to the loss of genetic information and, thus, produce premature aging, cancer and genetic abnormalities. —Ab 1. Januar 2015 hat das neue Gesetz für Individuelles Einkommen (LIRPF, L26 / 2014) die Anwendung erweitert, wonach neue Steuerresidenten ihre Steuern auch als NichtResidenten-Einkommensteuer (LIRNR) zahlen können. If there is no increase of the inherited property assets, is there no capital gain?

Wenn geerbtes Immobilienvermögen nicht gewachsen ist, ist es kein Kapitalgewinn, oder?

— According to Spanish councils, when a house is sold in the country it doesn’t matter if it makes a profit or a loss for the seller. In both cases he has to pay the municipal capital gains.

However, the Spanish courts are starting to change their minds.

As we can see in the articles 104 to 110 from the Texto Refundido de la Ley de Haciendas locales (Consolidated text of the Local Tax Office Law) approved on March 5th by Royal Legislative Decree 2/2004 (from now on, TRLRHL) the value increase tax of urban lands has to be regulated – an initiative that is usually referred to as capital gains.

The legal doctrine and jurisprudence have always included their basis on article 47 of the Spanish Constitution.

This explains that “The community will participate in the capital gains produced by the public authority of urban action” According to article 104 from TRLRHL, capital gain is a direct tribute that taxes the increase of the value of urban lands when the property is given as another title deed or when the territory’s restrictive enjoyment right is transmitted.

From the previous statement, we can affirm that this taxable obligation is related to the existence of these three elements:

1. It has to be a legal business related to the transmission of a property or to the domains’ restrictive enjoyment.

2. The object of the transmission has to be related to urban affairs.

3. It is mandatory that a value

increase is produced from the purchase date to the sale date.

As we have shown, one of the mandatory requirements for this transmission that is subject to capital gains tax is that the inherited asset has increased its value. Therefore, the tax’s own nomenclature shows us an increase on the urban land’s value. In fact, we can also quote the appeal 515/2011 of Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Cataluña

Wie wir in Artikel 104-110 des Texto Refundido de la Ley de Haciendas locales (Verbindlicher Text des Lokalen Gesetzes des Steuerbüros), am 5. März durch das Königliche Legislative Decret 2/2004 (von nun an TRLRHL genannt) verabschiedete Gesetz sehen können, muss die Wertzunahme von städtischem

Grund reguliert werden – gewöhnlich als Kapitalertrag bezeichnet.

Rechtslehre und Rechtsprechung haben sich immer auf den 47. Artikel der Spanischen Verfassung bezogen.

Der erklärt, dass „die Gemeinde am Kapitalgewinn Anteil haben wird, der durch öffentliche Behörden städtischer Handlung produziert wird“.

Gemäß diesem Artikel 104 des TRLRHL, ist Kapitalgewinn eine direkte Abgabe, die den Wertzuwachs städtischen Grundes besteuert, wenn der städtische Grundbesitz den Eigentümer wechselt oder wenn die Nutzungsrechte übertragen werden.

(Superior Tribunal of Justice of Catalonia, TSJ) from 18th July 2013. It concludes that IIVTNU can’t be required when there has not been any increase on the value.

This legal resolution is not an isolated verdict, as it coincides with other similar legal pronouncements such as the TSJ sentence from 21st March (appeal 432/2010) and another from May 9th 2012.

The content included in the previous legal sentences has been assumed by a

sentence of the Juzgado de lo Contencioso Administrativo de Barcelona Nº 13 (Barcelona’s Dispute Tribunal Court), on January 22th 2013. In this case, no municipal capital gains tax has been accepted in the transmission of urban lands in Barcelona, in which the value had significantly decreased. It is therefore clear that for the most important legal authority in Spain, the Supreme Court, the nonexistence of an increase value excludes the tax.

Aus dem Vorhergehenden können wir schließen, dass diese Steuerverpflichtung anfällt, wenn diese drei Elemente zusammentreffen:

Wie wir gezeigt haben, ist eines der zwingenden Erfordernisse für diese Übertragung, die der Kapitalertragsteuer unterliegt, dass das Erbe seinen Wert gesteigert hat.

Deswegen zeigt die Nomenklatur der Steuer eine Wertsteigerung des städtischen Grundes an.

Wir können auch die Berufung 515/2011 des Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Cataluña zitieren. Sie entschied, dass IIVTNU nicht verpflichtend ist, wenn es keinen Wertzuwachs gegeben hat. Diese Rechtsbestimmung ist kein isoliertes Urteil, sie stimmt mit anderen ähnlichen

1. Es muss ein Rechtsgeschäft stattgefunden haben bei der Eigentums- oder Nutzungsübertragung.

2. Das Objekt muss städtische Angelegenheiten betreffen.

3. Es ist zwingend, dass der Wertzuwachs aus der Spanne zwischen Kauf- und Verkaufsdatum stammt.

Rechtsordnungen wie dem TSJ-Urteil vom 21. März (432/2010) und einem vom 9.

Mai 2012 überein.

Der Inhalt der vorgenannten Urteile wurde von einem Urteil des Juzgado de lo Contencioso Administrativo de Barcelona Nr. 13 (Barcelonas Streitgericht) am 22.

Januar 2013 übernommen. In diesem Fall wurde keine kommunale Ertragssteuer bei der Übertragung städtischen Grundes akzeptiert, dessen Wert signifikant gefallen war. Deswegen ist klar, dass nach der wichtigsten Rechtsautorität Spaniens, dem Obersten Gericht, nicht vorhandener Gewinn eine Besteuerung ausschließt.

Taking advantage of every spot The start-up WeSmartPark helps people find and rent private parking spots easily from their mobile phones in Barcelona and Madrid. Presentation in London and Barcelona of the takeover bid for the British bank TSB

Josep Oliu, the chairman of Banco Sabadell and Jaime Guardiola, the chief executive officer of the entity gave press conferences in London and Barcelona to explain to the media the takeover bid that Banco Sabadell has presented to acquire control of the entire shareholding of the British bank TSB. Both Josep Oliu and Jaime Guardiola have stated that the UK market is an attractive one, as it has a stable, welldefined regulatory framework, offers consistent returns and has sound growth prospects, especially in the retail and small and medium enterprises market.

TSB Banking is currently a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group and holds sixth place in the ranking of British banks. With assets in excess of 34,000 million euros, it has a network of 631 branch offices across Scotland and England, a workforce of 8,600 staff and 4.6 million customers.

By virtue of the agreement, the price agreed on to for the operation totals 1,700 million pounds (approximately 2,350 million euros). The public offering of Banco Sabadell is 340 pence per share (approximately 4.70 euros per share) which signifies a premium of 29% compared to the price of TSB 50

before the operation was announced.

The operation enjoys the support of the current executive team of TSB which has advised its shareholders to accept the offer of Banco Sabadell.

If the operation is executed, Banco Sabadell will have taken a significant step forward in its strategic objective of expanding its business to other international markets, one of the planks of its Triple Strategic Plan 2014-2016.

Thus, with the acquisition of TSB, Banco Sabadell would have 22% of its assets located overseas, as against the current 5%. Moreover, the experience acquired by Banco Sabadell from the seven integrations of banking entities carried out successfully to date, its broad experience in customer service, especially in personal banking and SMEs, will be key for generating major synergies.

As part of this operation, the Board of Directors of Banco Sabadell has approved a capital increase for an approximate sum of 1,600 million euros, with preferred subscription rights for the current shareholders of the bank.

The new shares will be offered at a subscription price of 1.48 €, in a ratio of 3 new shares for every 11 current shares.

As explained by Josep Oliu and Jaime Guardiola, this capital increase will enable it to maintain Banco Sabadell’s conservative capital position, with one of the highest ratios among Spanish banks.

Aufgrund der Vereinbarung stimmte man dem Preis für die Operation von 1,700 Millionen Pfund (ca. 2,350 Millionen Euro) zu. Das offizielle Angebot von Banco Sabadell ist 340 Pence pro Share (ca. 4,70 Euros per Share), was einen Aufschlag von 29 % bedeutet, verglichen mit dem Preis von TSB, bevor die Operation bekanntgegeben wurde. Die Operation wird vom gegenwärtigen Führungsteam von TSB unterstützt, das seine Shareholder anwies, das Angebot Banco Sabadells zu akzeptieren.

The Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders of Banco Sabadell, held recently in Sabadell with 65,74% of capital in attendance (present and represented), approved performance and results in 2014, the bank’s 133rd year in operation, and the proposal to distribute the 371.7 million euros of earnings reported in 2014.

Shareholders also approved a scrip dividend amounting to 0.04 euros per share, complemented by a distribution of treasury stock in the amount of 0.01 euros per share. In this way, gross shareholder remuneration amounted to 0.05 euros per share, which will be paid in June.

The meeting also ratified the appointment of Aurora Catá, José Manuel Lara Garcia and David Vegara as independent directors to fill the two existing vacancies and to replace Josep Permanyer, who has resigned after a career of 57 years, including 13 as a director of Banco Sabadell.

CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS Chairman Josep Oliu discussed performance in the last year, noting moderate growth by the world economy, the European Central Bank’s actions to defend the euro, the implementation of the Banking Union, and the positive impact of adjustments to macroeconomic imbalances. “The economic and financial climate in 2014,” he said, “was more benign than in the preceding years. Financial markets’ confidence in the euro and

in the solvency of Europe’s financial system has been broadly restored.”

The chairman noted that the bank had exceeded its 2013 results, in line with the general improvement in the economy, which continues to recover.

Josep Oliu noted that 2014 was the Bank’s 133rd year of existence, one in which it successfully passed the asset quality review and stress test prior to joining the new European bank supervision system, and that it was the only Spanish bank that did not have to adjust its financial statements.

He added that “following a number of acquisitions, the bank is actively managing capital, having raised new capital when needed, and has attained ratios that have proven to be sufficient for the demanding new requirements.”

He also discussed the bank’s internationalization process: “our internationalization strategy was stepped up in 2015 when we made a bid for 100% of TSB Banking Group plc (TSB), the seventh-largest bank in the UK and one of the banks with the greatest growth potential in the UK market. This takeover bid is a watershed in the bank’s history, opening the door to greater growth potential than is available in our home market.”

Sabadell mit 65,74% des stimmberechtigten Kapitals (anwesend und vertreten), stimmte der Leistung und den Ergebnissen von 2014 zu, dem 133. Jahr ihres Wirkens, und dem Vorschlag, die 371.7 Millionen Euro Gewinne von 2014 zu verteilen.

Die Aktionäre stimmten ebenfalls einer Scrip-Dividende zu von 0,04 Euro pro Share, ergänzt durch eine Ausschüttung von Vorratsaktien in Höhe von 0.01 Euro pro Share. Damit beläuft sich die BruttoAktienvergütung auf 0.05 Euro pro Share, die im Juni ausbezahlt wird.

Das Meeting bestätigte die Nennung von Aurora Catá, José Manuel Lara Garcia und David Vegara als unabhängige Leiter für die beiden freien Stellen, und um Josep Permanyer zu ersetzen, der nach einem 57jährigen Berufsleben, davon 13 als Leiter von Banco Sabadell zurücktritt.

ANSPRACHE DES VORSITZENDEN Präsident Josep Oliu bemerkte in der Besprechung der Leistung des letzten Jahres ein bescheidenes Wachstum der Weltwirtschaft, besprach die Aktionen der Europäischen Zentralbank zur Rettung des Euro, die Durchführung einer Bankenunion, und die positive Wirkung der Angleichung an makroökonomische Ungleichgewichte.

Der Präsident stellte fest, dass die Bank die Ergebnisse von 2013 übertroffen hat, gemeinsam mit der generellen Erholung der Wirtschaft, die sich weiterhin erholt.

Josep Oliu merkte an, dass 2014 das 133. Jahr der Existenz der Bank war, eines in dem sie vor dem Zusammenschluss mit dem Europäischen Bank Supervision System erfolgreich Asset Quality Review und den Stresstest bestanden habe, und die einzige spanische Bank war, die ihre

Geschäftsberichte nicht korrigieren musste.

Er fügte hinzu, dass „ durch die Anzahl von Übernahmen die Bank aktiv Kapital beschafft, neues Kapital beschafft hat, wenn es nötig war und Quoten erreicht hat, die sich als ausreichend für die neuen Anforderungen erwiesen haben.

Er besprach auch den Internationalisierungs prozess der Bank: „Unsere Internationalisierungsstrategie wurde 2015 verstärkt, als wir das Gebot für 100 % der TSB Banking Group abgaben, der siebtgrößten Bank in England und eine der Banken mit dem größten Wachstumspotenzial auf dem UK-Markt. Diese Übernahme ist ein Wendepunkt in der Geschichte der Bank und „öffnet die Tür zu größerem Wachstumspotenzial, als das in unserem Heimatmarkt möglich wäre.“

Banco Sabadell inaugurates its new office on Paris’ Champs Élysées The president of Banco Sabadell, Josep Oliu, has inaugurated the new branch of Banco Sabadell in Paris, at number 127 Champs Elysees. The new branch has extensive facilities and 16 employees, all bilingual, although new hires of local bankers with good knowledge of the French market are planned in the short term. Its customers are mainly subsidiaries of Spanish groups and French corporates with businesses in Spain and a turnover of over 200 million euros.

According to Josep Ruix Balanzá, CEO of Banco Sabadell in France, “Banco Sabadell is now a commercial bank reference for subsidiaries of Spanish companies in France.

Moreover, it is becoming a reference in the French large & middle market segment, having succeeded in closing significant transactions such as in the renewable energy sector, especially in the financing of wind farms. “ Banco Sabadell has operated in Paris since 1987 and this new office represents a commitment of the banc to the French market with, a long-term vision. The branch serves customers in corporate banking and has had an increase in turnover of 50% over the past three years. Grup Idea, founded in 1996, has created the architectural design of the new office.

Ihre Kunden sind hauptsächlich Tochtergesellschaften spanischer Gruppen, und französische Unternehmen mit Geschäftsbeziehungen in Spanien und einem Umsatz von über 200 Millionen Euro.

Nach Josep Ruix Balanzá, dem Vorstandsvorsitzenden Banco Sabadells in Frankreich, “ist Banco Sabadell eine Handelsbankreferenz für Tochtergesellschaften spanischer

Laurelie Boulanger I was born in Liège, Belgium.

I studied to work in administrative support and I speak French and English.

I visited Spain for the first time 15 years ago, on a trip to the Canary Islands. I decided to just stop travelling and stay a while in Fuerteventura, where I am today.

I have been working in Banco Sabadell since 2003. I started in the Caleta de Fuste branch, when opening hours were from 9am till 10pm, 7 days a week. I stayed there for more than 10 years. I was part of a great, friendly team. I still miss Maria, Martina, Guacimara and Rosa a lot!

Last March I moved to the Corralejo branch to become part of a young and positive team of six people as a Personal Advisor.

The thing I like the most about working at Sabadell Solbank is the international atmosphere and being in touch with different languages and cultures every day.

In both branches, the priority is to give good personal service to our customers.

When dealing with clients, the most important thing is to make both residents and non-residents feel comfortable, and to try to make banking easy for them.

What I like the most about Spain is the weather and the good fortune of living in a place with no crowds everywhere. Nevertheless, I miss my family and friends and whatever you can find in a Belgian bakery! We have beautiful cities there, everyone should visit them.

When I am not working I like running a lot. And I love the moments where I am not doing anything, just enjoying the family. I have two lovely boys, Adrian and Hugo. And of course I enjoy the great beaches we have on the island.

Ich bin in Liége, Belgien, geboren. Ich habe eine Verwaltungsausbildung gemacht und spreche Französisch und Englisch. Ich war zum ersten Mal vor 15 Jahren in Spanien, auf den Kanaren.

Ich entschloss mich damals, eine Weile auf Fuerteventura zu bleiben – bis heute.

Ich arbeite seit 2003 für Banco Sabadell. Ich fing in der Caleta de Fuste-Zweigstelle an, mit Öffnungszeiten von 9 -22 Uhr, 7 Tage die Woche. Dort war ich über 10 Jahre lang. Ich war Teil eines wunderbaren, freundlichen Teams und vermisse Maria, Martina, Guacimara und Rosa sehr!

Vergangenen März fing ich in der Zweigstelle Corralejo als Teil eines jungen und dynamischen Teams von sechs Leuten als persönlicher Betreuer an.

Atmosphäre und die verschiedenen Sprachen und Kulturen. In beiden Zweigstellen zählt es zu meinen Prioritäten, guten und persönlichen Service für unsere Kunden zu bieten.

Im Kundendienst ist mir das wichtigste, dass die Kunden sich wohl fühlen, sowohl Residenten als auch Nicht-Residenten. Ich versuche, das Bankgeschäft für sie so einfach wie möglich zu machen.

Am meisten an Spanien mag ich das Wetter und das Gefühl, an einem Ort zu leben, der nicht überfüllt ist. Dennoch vermisse ich meine Familie und meine Freunde und all das, was es in einer belgischen Bäckerei gibt! Wir haben wunderschöne Städte dort und jeder sollte sie besuchen.

Wenn ich nicht arbeite, laufe ich viel. Ich liebe diese Momente, in denen ich nur meine Familie genieße. Ich habe zwei wunderbare Jungs, Adrian und Hugo. Und natürlich genieße ich die tollen Strände der Insel.

Sie organisieren gerade Kurse darüber, wie Unternehmen vom Sport lernen können. Was sind diese Vorteile?

Die Sportkultur fördert Teamarbeit und erteilt uns eine gute Lektion: Dass man bessere Ergebnisse erzielt, wenn man mit anderen zusammenarbeitet, als alleine.

Haben Sie ein anderes Beispiel?

Wenn Sie 80 km laufen wollen, können sie auf den ersten 10 km nicht demotiviert sein. Man muss jeden einzelnen Laufabschnitt separat nehmen. Sport hilft auch, das Gleichgewicht zwischen Erfolg und Misserfolg zu finden.
