bangin’ on... Hello again from all at Bang Hair! As you will see, our gorgeous little publication is growing nicely, as more talented contributors come on board to help us bring more style, more fashion & a creative edge to our audience. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local businesses that are starting to support our project, this means we can print & fill more pages displaying not just the wonderful talents of our team at Bang Hair, but our many gifted clients & creative counterparts. We’re showcasing the rather special talents of local girl & promising young fashion graduate, Sally Rhodes, who has collaborated with us on several occasions in the past few months. This issue sees a loosely concurrent theme as we take our hats off to Coco Chanel as the brand celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2010. We’re also giving you the low down on where to buy those essential fashion items for this season (and also where to grab some rather cool christmas gifts). And we have one eye looking forward to 2011 with a little hint of what’s ahead in fashion & the world of Bang Hair. After all, we need to stay one step ahead of the game so that you, our clients & friends can too. Hope you enjoy this latest little adventure.

Since the S/S Catwalk showcase, as part of his ongoing work on the ID Artist program, Jody has had some intense education at the L’Oréal Academy from Trevor Sorbie MBE, Mark Woolley, award winning stylist & Adam Reed, hairdresser to Madonna, Lady Ga Ga & the X Factor. The team saw cutting & session styling demos & were moved to tears by a heartfelt speech from Trevor Sorbie. They learned about the influences & techniques behind L’Oréal Professionnel’s A/W collection EVEOLUTION.The collection sees technology & nature collide to inspire fashion. The team then had to source models and decide how they would interpret the looks for the A/W Catwalk showcase events in Newcastle and Leeds. These events are becoming increasingly popular and tickets have sold out weeks in advance & attract audiences of 200+. Jody did a fantastic job and we are all really proud of his achievements so far. So what’s next for The ID Team? Well in November they’re being whisked off to Barcelona for an all expenses paid trip to the Exposure Tour, staying in 5 star luxury in the heart of the city, spend a day at the prestigious L’Oréal Professionnel Academy, watch demonstrations from a top British industry professional hair artist and soak up the sights and sounds of Barcelona for a day before returning to their salons for the christmas rush! Awesome. It really is a great opportunity for these young talented individuals to be able to work so closely with L’Oréal Professionnel learning about the collections and bringing that buzz back into the salon too.
Everybody loves’ The Ice Factor’ and we’re thrilled that they’ve managed to bring it back to York this year, in spite of doubt after losing their pitch under Clifford’s Tower. Anyhoo! It’s all for the greater good, as the rink is now bigger and better than ever and also has the huge advantage of free parking while you skate. So, to celebrate the attraction’s new siting at York Designer Outlet, we’ve managed to snaffle a handful of tickets for our very most deserving of customers. Just mention ‘THE ICE FACTOR’ & spend over £30 on retail items in our salon and we’ll give you a complimentary skating ticket worth £9.50. We have a limited number on a first come, first served basis, so hurry up and get your Christmas stocking filled with some gorgeous hair products now! The Ice Factor will be open from Saturday 20th November - Sunday 9th January 2011 at York Designer Outlet, A19/A64 interchange. www.theicefactor.co.uk

Session Lessons Updo's are a big favourite on longer hair this winter. Hair should be worn effortlessly sexy, using movement and texture for an unkempt, playful finish. So, what are the hottest looks to see you through the season? Here’s 3 key trends from London Fashion Week for you to play with. 1. PONYTAILS Ponytails were huge on the catwalks and have already filtered through to celeb-land, with the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore sporting the look. Wear yours dishevelled and off to one side for a 60's inspired version. Get the look: Apply L'OrÊal Texture Experte Expansion Mousse to rough dried hair and blast with a dryer, tip your head forward for root lift, decide where your ponytail will sit & smooth the hair using a natural bristle brush towards this point, spraying with TIGI Masterpiece, when you have an even tension all around, secure with an elastic, take a small piece of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the band and secure with a couple of kirby grips, lightly spray with the mist to finish. 2.FISHTAIL PLAITS (Pictured - Fat & Messy) Fishtail plaits are one of the hottest hair trends of the moment and have worked their way down every catwalk in one guise or another. Ferne Cotton has been a great ambassador for the trend. Get the look: Start with a low ponytail, off to one side. Make sure the band is secure then split the pony into two equal sections, take a piece of hair from the outer edge of the left side and cross it over to the inside right to join that side, then take the same size piece from the outside right and cross it over to the inside left, repeat, right to left and left to right over and over until you reach the ends, secure with a band. You can remove the band at the base of the ponytail , now by cutting it free. shed squa f ar tistic o t s o ay o, wave flyaw ispy ve after d easy to w h a it n w a w O s a D w I te NE r y no mple ere w e TIG NDO y buns co ignons, th do' is ve st in som ins, U . 3 e m h n, bla mess ndon led c for 5 From ly cr ump W. Words by Sarah Cotton Director, Bang Hair
Love them or hate them, there’s no denying that Fringes are very much at the forefront in the style stakes this season. It’s a catwalk favourite that just keeps on coming back in one guise or another. Be it heavy, blunt, choppy, wispy or side swept, there’s a fringe out there to suit almost everyone. A fringe makes a bold statement and brings structure to a hairstyle. It’s the smart option when you want to change your look without risking a complete restyle. Nothing has more impact on a hairstyle than dramatically cutting the piece of hair that surrounds your face. For better or worse it can completely change the perception of your face shape so a decision should not be entered into lightly, a fringe that suits one face shape may not suit another. Before you make up your mind on the perfect fringe, explore your options, have a chat with your stylist and take along pictures of the kind that appeals to you, a good stylist will guide you in the right direction considering your face shape, lifestyle and the direction of hair growth, for example cows licks, low hair line’s and natural partings which may limit your choices. Don’t be afraid to pop into your salon in between haircuts for a fringe trim, most salons don’t charge for this and it prevents you being tempted to get out the kitchen scissors before a big night out......potential disaster! Adding a fringe is a daring decision, so don’t chop off your precious locks until you’ve checked out our guide to the most ‘on trend’ bangs out there.

It would be fashion sacrilege if we didn’t mention the extravaganza. The venue, Paris’ Grand Palais had been transformed in its entirety into a black and white formal garden with working, full size fountains and a full orchestra at one end. And that’s before we even get to the collection. Lagerfeld displayed updated versions of the classic Chanel tweed suit, feathered dresses & hard leather accents, with a monochromatic & nude palette against pastel hues. The celeb filled front row included Rachel Bilson, Kiera Knightley, Claudia Schiffer and Clémence Poésy.

SHE DESIGNED ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC HANDBAGS OF ALL TIME AS WELL AS THE LITTLE PINK SUIT WORN BY JACKIE KENNEDY THE DAY JFK WAS ASSASSINATED; SHE INTRODUCED THE WORLD’S MOST CELEBRATED PERFUME, WORN BY NONE OTHER THAN MARILYN MONROE. SHE BEGAN THE ERA OF THE SUN TAN, COSTUME JEWELLERY AND THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS. BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK AND ABANDONED BY HER FATHER IN AN ORPHANAGE, HER LIFE WAS ASTONISHING AND HER ACHIEVEMENTS EVEN GREATER.
This is the story of Gabrielle Chanel. Born in 1883, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel became one of the world’s most renowned designers and revolutionised women’s fashion until her death in 1971. She was a true icon and because of her status within the fashion industry she was the only person in business to be named in the ‘Time 100 Persons of the Century’ in 1999. It was 100 years ago, in 1910 that Chanel became a licensed ‘modiste’ (hat maker) and opened her first store, after learning to be a seamstress in an orphanage at the age of 12. Her hats proved to be popular with the French hunting elite, who would buy them for their mistresses. Following the success of her headwear, Chanel introduced her first collection of casual clothing in 1913. It was this collection which challenged the classic woman’s clothing, using soft fabrics and a loose fitting silhouette while maintaining class, elegance and originality. These attributes were especially popular throughout World War One, as women were required to work in the place of
18
men, for the first time. Chanel’s clothing was not only fashionable, but practical and comfortable for the working woman. Her designs became known throughout France for their simplicity and style. So much so, in the years following the war she opened her first and now world famous boutique on Paris’ Rue Cambon. In the early 1920s, Chanel launched her first and now legendary perfume: Chanel No. 5. It is rumoured that Chanel was prompted to name her signature scent after being told by a psychic that five was her lucky number. The psychic proved to be right as Chanel No. 5 is still a profitable perfume for the Chanel company to this day, as well as being the most popular scent ever created. It was in the late 1930s when Paris fell to Nazi invasion that Chanel had no choice but to close her boutiques. It was at this time that she lived, rather comfortably, in the Paris Ritz while engaging in a highly controversial relationship with a Nazi officer (something which has been left out of
most publications regarding Chanel’s life.) It would seem Chanel was one of many of Paris’ famous cultural elite who fell for the charms of the Nazi soldiers. After World War Two and her Nazi controversy, Chanel fled to Switzerland in exile and stayed there until she returned to Paris in 1954 to resume her business. It was when she returned to Paris she realised that while she’d been gone French women had switched their alliances to designers such as Dior and Balenciaga; who much preferred the classic feminine silhouette, svelte and glamorous and this went against everything Chanel stood for. It was at this time Chanel got the biggest response from American and British women who still stood by her. It was in the next year, 1955, that Chanel launched one of her most iconic pieces, the 2.55 handbag. The 2.55 was launched in February 1955 and was an updated version of a bag Chanel had designed in the 1920s. There are many personal design features within the 2.55, such as the burgundy lining which was a similar colour to that of her orphanage uniform. There are many variations of this iconic piece, including differences in colour and material and in the 1980s the bag was released with the, now popular, interlocking CC lock replacing the standard “Mademoiselle”. In February 2005, fifty years after its original launch, Chanel launched a commemorative reissue of the 2.55. These bags regressed to the original design along with the Mademoiselle lock
and burgundy lining and were a tribute to Chanel’s timeless design. Chanel was still designing when she died on January 10th 1971, just a few days before being due to show her latest collection. All was quiet from the Chanel house until 1983 when Karl Lagerfeld took over as the brand’s Creative Director in the very same Parisian building in which Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel worked long and hard for fifty years, making a style which is instantly familiar worldwide. Since taking over at the helm of the Chanel fashion house, Lagerfeld has taken the world by storm and continued the design greatness the brand is renowned for. A Chanel piece is more sought after than it ever has been, with the interlocking Cs becoming a globally recognisable symbol of decadence. Chanel has also become the market leader of perfumes, with No. 5 still being at the helm of their range. In 1999 Chanel released PRÉCISION, now used by men and women all over the world and their luxurious cosmetic lines are on every girls’ wish list. We SO need a NARS retailer in York! It currently means a trip out to Harrogate or Leeds to sample their gorgeous products. This strong, classic look is very current for AW10/11. Shades vary from blackcurrant to sweetest raspberry. Don’t be afraid to play around with the shape, outline with a pencil, draw a deep cupids bow shape or use a lip brush to keep things precise. We love NARS Semi Matte lipstick in Red Lizard. £17.00. www.narscosmetics.co.uk
The trend for eye make-up for AW10/11 is minimal. Just a smudge of eye shadow or a flick of liner, but keep it simple, even smokey eyes are more subtle in colour. Try this YSL duo of khaki & nude. For a natural look, dust the lid with the nude tone & blend a little of the dark from the lashline toward the corner, just don’t over do it. Available at Browns, Davygate. www.brownsofyork.co.uk

Bang’s AW10/11 hair collection, SCULPT showcases texture , structure and movement . T he styles create a powerful image with bold shapes & colour , yet the subtle textures suggest a delicate feminity . T he whole collection is perfectly complemented by the amazing talents of local promising
Fashion Week’ - Ferry Staverman, who creates beautiful sculptures from corrugated card. Sally’s designs have the same strong, geometric, almost sci-fi edge to them as the hair collection itself. Hard leather panels meet soft, sometimes sheer fabrics in a Yin Yang collision of science meets nature. fashion

Framed When planning our hair shoots, hiring a good studio space is an integral part of the process. We need a place that can cope when we rock up with a crazy team of about 20 people. After scouring the whole of York, we found one studio that ticks all the boxes and more. York Studios is conveniently situated off the Wiggington Road roundabout at Clifton Moor. The facilities are phenomenal, including hi-tech studio lights, a 24ft built-in backdrop, WIFI, hair & make-up studio, chill out lounge and refreshments area, what more could any photographer and his team ask for. They certainly get the thumbs up from The Bang Art Team and many other professionals.
PICTURE PERFECT York Studios also offer a range of domestic and commercial photographic services by their talented in-house team. Whether you’re after a family portrait, a unique piece of personalised wall art or some products that need creatively shooting for your business, these guys really know their stuff.
PERSONAL SERVICE A photographic portrait experience with York Studios is far from daunting. The guys put you at ease from the outset, they discuss the shots you want to achieve and tailor a shoot that meets your expectations. Go all out for the full hair and makeup transformation or simply opt for a natural portrait. The photos you choose will be retouched to perfection and then supplied to you printed, mounted, framed or wrapped on a canvas - the choice is yours. Most importantly, there is no ‘hard sell’, their work sells itself.
