YOUR

SOCIETIES

Now that you’re coming to Bangor University you’ll need something to do in your spare time! You should check out all of the student societies we’ve got! Societies are a fantastic way to meet new people, make friends or experience new activities, many will even complement your academic studies, giving skills and qualifications that will benefit you long after you’ve finished your time here! We have over 100 different societies and the number is growing every week. We have academic societies like the Psychology Society or the Geography Society that will be involved with your academic schools. Our media societies Y Llef, Seren and StormFM deal with print journalism and radio. There are music societies that organise bands and orchestras. If you like being on the stage or helping out backstage we have performing societies such as BEDS (Bangor English Drama Society), Rostra and SODA. For the activist in you we have campaign societies such as CoppaFeel, Time To Change, and Nightline!

DJ Society

If you’ve got an idea for a society then all you need to do is find 10 likeminded people that want to be involved, and drop me an e-mail at mark.stanley@bangorstudents.com to get the ball rolling! Oh and the other bonus is, wait for it. They’re all FREE to join! We’re one of only three students unions in the UK where that’s the case and it allows for all students and community members to join in on as many activities as possible and stops any barriers to your experience.

YOUR WHAT IS

UMCB?

We have a number of societies to be a part of as you can see overleaf and we are always interested in any ideas for new clubs, societies or events. All you need to do is to come and see me in either my office in the Students’ Union or in JMJ or contact me on ifan.james@ bangorstudents.com.

UMCB, Bangor’s Welsh Students’ Union, is the Union to look after the welfare of Welsh students, Welsh learners and anyone interested in Welsh language and culture during your time here at Bangor. We have a wide variety of activities to enjoy throughout the year to make sure you make the most of your time here. Over the next year I will ensure that you are not under any disadvantage whilst studying through the medium of Welsh by reviewing the translation process and the language of your exams. If you have any problems with your course or the services in Welsh here at Bangor, come and see me and I shall do my best to help or direct you to someone who can.

EDUCATION 18

YOUR

WELFARE

To enjoy your student experience to the fullest you need to be happy and healthy and know you can turn to someone for support when you need it – which is exactly what we do all day, every day! With welfare societies like Nightline, Coppafeel and our LGBTQ+ society, myself as your Education and Welfare Sabb, we are all committed to ensuring that your welfare is at the top of the priority list.

Campaigns

Housing Campaign

There are many campaigns that you can get involved with, from existing campaigns such as our Love your mind mental health campaign, to the #Welfare, focusing on how you look after yourselves during the busier times of your degree.

Our Take your Time to Sign (housing campaign) will also be starting in November to inform you when the best time is to start searching for a house and what to look for. This will include a chance to view a variety of houses with an Open House Scheme so that you Take Your Time To Sign. Look out for our publicity!

Student Life Wellbeing also includes coping with student life at Bangor (we all face difficult times when we’re away from home at university) and the way you live in the community. This is why the SU works closely with Student Support Services at Rathbone to make sure you’re time at Bangor is as awesome as it can be. Adding to this the Connect@Bangor volunteering project will be available to all students as well, making sure that you have the support you need to make the most of your time at Bangor. All bases covered.

Zero Tolerance Policy We also have a Zero Tolerance Policy a, whereby staff are Zero Tolerance trained – meaning when you’re on a night out, or going about your own business, you can feel safe in knowing that there are people across Bangor looking out for your safety (being a relatively small city, it’s quite easy to do!). Finally - never, ever, ever hesitate to phone, email or pop into the SU at any time for some advice, support, or just a chat – we’re a talkative bunch, we won’t mind!

Psst! Nightline is a confidential listening and information service run by students

for students! During term time, every day from 8pm till 8am, Nightline are available all night for queries you may have, takeaway phone numbers or more serious things you may wish to talk about. Call: 01248 383880

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES GET INVOLVED!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HAVING A RECORD OF YOUR THREE YEARS AT BANGOR? Are you interested in helping us make life better for everyone? At Bangor Students’ Union we have an exciting and innovative vlogging project called Three Years Later. We’re looking for up to 5 students from a variety of backgrounds to take part in the project this year by recording short video blogs on your life as a student at Bangor over the next three years.

We want to know how Welcome Week was for you, how you found your first assignment and what it’s really like being in a club or society. All vloggers will be given a video camera and asked to send in short videos of about 5 – 10 minutes throughout the year and we’ll be using the videos to help us put together a really in-depth understanding of life at Bangor for students. As a reward for taking part in all three years, we’re offering a free Summer Ball ticket every year and you’ll be able to keep the cameras afterwards. We’re looking for students from all sorts of backgrounds – international students, research students, undergraduates, Welsh speakers – so if you’re interested, get in touch with us at Danielle.barnard@bangorstudents.com for more information.

FREE HOMEWARES PACKS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS NEEDING SUPPORT If you are a student coming from a low income background, or without significant support to attend university, you may be interested in receiving a free pack of household items for your time in halls of residence. The packs contain all the crockery, cutlery and pans that you will need, along with glasses, mugs, cooking utensils and a chopping board.

FIND US AT... handbook 2015.indd 22-23

As this is a pilot program, there are a limited number of packs available; therefore we only ask that you put your name forward if you would be unable to purchase these items yourself. You can find out more about this scheme and put your name forward by e-mailing svb@bangorstudents.com.

YOUR

EDUCATION

At Bangor Students’ Union we believe that students should be in the driving seat of their academic experience. We’re also very proud of our Academic Representation Unit and Course Representative System Our Academic Representation Unit focuses on students’ academic experience, and is where you can go if you have any academic related problems or need to make an academic appeal. The ARU is also home to the Student-Led Teaching Awards – a project which gives you the opportunity to have a say about your teaching and learning experiences, by giving you the chance to nominate staff in your department for one of our awards. Look out for more information about this during Semester 1! Want to know more - e-mail us at academicrepunit@ bangorstudents.com

Each year the Student Led Teaching Awards (SLTA’s) are coordinated in the ARU to give students the opportunity to nominate staff who have gone the extra mile. TWITTER.COM/BANGORSTUDENTS

The Course Rep System, is where all of your feedback is heard and used to continually monitor and improve your academic experience. This helps to resolve problems with your course, providing you with opportunities to comment and reflect on your experiences and by working with you, together we can change issues that matter the most. The system is led by your Reps while working in partnership with your School, your College and everyone here at the Students’ Union so that your opinions are at the centre of every decision made which affect your studies.

Course Reps are elected in the first few weeks of Semester 1, and any student can stand to be one. If you’d like to be at the forefront of decisions affecting your education, e-mail coursereps@bangorstudents.com to find out how you can get involved!

OUR ANNUAL

STATEMENT

THE ANNUAL STUDENT STATEMENT IS ONE OF OUR PIECES OF WORK THAT WE ARE PROUDEST OF. You can read our Statement over on our website, but put simply, it’s a report entirely based on what you tell us about your academic experience. From books on shelves, to computer labs, feedback on your work and module choices - your voice is at the forefront of change.

WE EVEN LOOK AT EMPLOYABILITY AND REDUCING BARRIERS TO ACCESSING EDUCATION. Working in partnership with the University, we implement recommendations on how you can improve your experience by shaping how you’re taught, how you progress, all the way to how you want your academic experience to look and feel.

It’s YOUR education, and we believe that you’re the experts, so it should be us as students informing decisions.

Here’s what we want to do for you: Strengthen the inclusivity of Bangor’s student community Enhance the postgraduate experience Increase support for care-leavers and student parents Promote the importance of sexual health Further develop the relationship with the local community Create a welcome and engaging environment tailored to part-time, mature and home students FIND US AT... handbook 2015.indd 24-25

YOUR REPRESENTATION

23

Bangor Students’ Union is YOUR Students’ Union. We’re here so you can shape your Union, make the change you want to see, and be the change that you want to see.

ELECTIONS

STUDENT COUNCIL

The SU is led by students, for students. It’s how we make sure we’re fresh, vibrant, fun, and rooted in your experience. Democracy is at the heart of everything we do, and you’ll get the chance to elect students to run your club or society, to be your Course Representative, to sit on Student Council to debate ideas and issues, and to work as Sabbatical Officers. You have the power to choose who represents you. Or, if you’ve got drive, enthusiasm and ideas you can always stand in the elections yourself!

Student Council is a representative body of our student population. It meets regularly to make sure that the Sabbatical Officers are fulfilling their roles effectively, to debate ideas and issues and create new projects and areas of work. You can get involved in Student Council by talking to students on Student Council, by submitting an idea for Student Council to discuss or by coming along to the meetings!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES The SU is a charity that works on your behalf. Legally we have to have a Trustee Board to oversee our activities, making sure that we work hard for students, whilst, of course, ensuring that it’s all above board and legal. In addition to the Sabbatical Officers, we have 3 elected voluntary student trustees. You can find out more online.

HAVE YOU GOT A BRIGHT IDEA? TWITTER.COM/BANGORSTUDENTS

GENERAL MEETINGS We have two General Meetings a year, one at the beginning and one at the end. The GMs exist to give all of you an opportunity to question your Officers, find out what progress your Union is making and set budgets for the year ahead. This is also a chance for you to suggest new projects and ideas for the SU to work on.

If you’ve got a great idea to improve Bangor, it’s really easy to make the change! All you need to do is head to bangorstudents.com, to the Ideas section. Anyone can submit an Idea, and the Idea will be discussed at Student Council and then, if passed, becomes SU policy. The SU Officers will work with you to implement your Idea! That’s you influencing the experience of those around you! FACEBOOK.COM/BANGORSTUDENTSUNION 20/07/2015 23:59:14

HOUSING

WASTE

We are working with you and the local community to improve living standards through initiatives such as Housing Hand. Housing Hand is a volunteering initiative that will provide support to students and give new students advice on what they need to look out for and what questions they should ask in the future when searching for a house, gradually improving expected standards.

We believe that students need access to the appropriate information on how to deal with household waste and recycling and we work to provide you with this information and keep Bangor tidy.

UNIVERSITY PARKING If you’re planning on bringing a car to Bangor you can buy a parking permit . However, parking spaces are limited and we strongly recommend you consider whether or not you need a car in Bangor. Remember! - The Students’ Union can take you to and from our activities.
