WELCOME
The Pontio team is delighted to bring you a season that varies in scale from the small and intimate to the very large. Magical small-scale shows like Fran Wen’s Welsh language adaptation of award-winning ‘White’: Gwyn, and Swedish Teater Pero’s Aston’s Stones, are among the most exquisite shows for young children I have ever seen.
Welcome !
In June, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will stage tri-lingual immersive show Vangst / Rhwydo in a small, mobile theatre on Bangor’s old bowling green. At the other end of the spectrum, on Beach Road in Bangor this July, we bring you BIANCO - a big top production by NoFit State Circus.
The Pontio Shop is now open on Bangor’s High Street from 10am3pm, Monday to Saturday. Call in to buy tickets or join in the many workshops and activities – see page 24 for more details.
Drop by our new, temporary home at the Pontio shop on the High Street to find out more. We’ll be hosting a wealth of workshops at the shop over the summer from dance, music, story, film and poetry – all tasters to whet your appetite ahead of the opening of the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre in autumn 2014. At the tail end of the summer, one of Wales’ most prominent musical theatre stars John Owen Jones will join Côr Ysgol Glanaethwy in concert. Plus, we’ll have a golden opportunity for rising stars aged between 16-25 as we’ll be hosting auditions for singers eager to share the stage with the West End and Broadway star himself! ONE OF WELSH ROCK’S BIGGEST ICONS
Shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize in 2011 for his third album ‘I’m a Dancer / Songs About Sleeping’, Sweet Baboo’s (aka Stephen Black) evolution as a songwriter and musician is still very much in motion with his new album ‘Ships’.
Since 1967, Meic Stevens has wowed audiences in thousands of gigs, recording 15 albums and many more singles, during his long and varied career. His unique and unforgettable songs will last forever. Last year, Meic battled cancer successfully and we’re delighted to be able to welcome the 70-year-old rock rebel to the Pontio stage for the very first time!

Desires get under the skin and fears are felt to the bone in this heartfelt piece of physical theatre from The Netherlands by Roos van Geffen. Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru brings award-winning writer Angharad Price’s adaptation of this remarkable production to Bangor in a specially designed mobile theatre. The production will use three languages: Welsh, Dutch and English.
Roos has collected the deepest fears and desires of random passers-by all over Europe. Though weaving these very personal stories, Roos creates modest and poetic work in which the personal becomes universal. She will be adding to this on-going collection with this visit to Wales, gathering and incorporating the fears and desires of people up and down the country.

John Hedley
April 27 – 8 June 2013
April 27 – 8 June 2013
The Uncanny Edge Allusive works, driven by obsession, dilemma and irony, explore personal and archetypal narratives and situations. The strangely significant and the mundane mingle here to bemuse, amuse and disturb in a rich lexicon of intriguing imagery. There is an engagingly odd perspective here that is absurd, angstridden, gleeful and possibly uncanny.
Stress and Layering A selection of new work exploring the concepts of stress, cracking and layering, with reference to the geology related to Geo Môn (Anglesey Geopark) and similarities with some arboreal features. John Hedley has been awarded an Art Council Grant to develop this body of work in print, collage and paint creating images of abstract and organic aspect.

Remarkable Women
‘Salem’ at home
Dorothea Pughe-Jones, Dorothy Drage, Lady Reade
‘Salem’ a watercolour by Sidney Curnow Vosper (18661942) of a small Baptist chapel in Cefncymerau, near Harlech. Sunlight Soap popularised the image and a theory that a devil’s face can be seen in the fold of the shawl have contributed to making ‘Salem’ a Welsh icon. This exhibition will celebrate the work and reflect on how it continues to be absorbed into Welsh homes and expresses Welsh identity.
March 23 – 22 June 2013 This exhibition looks at three remarkable women; Dorothy Drage, Dorothea Pughe-Jones, and Lady Reade. These three names that may not be familiar but each of them have had a huge impact on the museum’s collections and the preservation of the cultural history of north west Wales.
