In my Ocean Sciences course I’ve been suprised by the amount of hands-on work you do. Rather than reading out of a book, you can experience the habitat, see the species, or even feel the rock sediment for yourself. The lecturers are very passionate about what they teach and make labs and lectures much more interesting. Everyone wants you to be successful and always available for questions after lectures and through email.

Alumni Profile Emily Griffith, Study Abroad student 2008-09 I have spent the past two years working for the Bioacoustic Research Program at Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology as a Research Analysist.
Emily is pictured setting up NOAA acoustic equipment for a deployment off Santa Catalina Island
Recently, however, I accepted a position in San Diego, CA working for SWFSC-NOAA as an Acoustic Technician. Here, I am testing and analyzing data from new autonomous recording devices to measure ocean noise and monitor marine mammals, with a current focus on elusive beaked whales.
I completed my MSc dissertation on odontocete vocalizations, so the skills learnt in that process have been directly applicable to jobs I have secured since graduation.
Alumni ProďŹ le Michael Barnett, Study Abroad student 1963-64.
These wonderful experiences opened my eyes to many cultures and viewpoints that have guided my life since that time. I am now a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California (part of the University of California). I am a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In my private life, I am very active in the California Democratic Party, serving on its Executive Board and on its Platform Committee. Certainly my perspective on life and the world was greatly impacted by my fantastic year in Bangor.

Before coming to Bangor, I had done a lot of folk dancing, so I joined the folk dancing club, and in the spring we decided to enter a competition at an Eisteddfod. We really enjoyed ourselves and to our surprise, we won an award.
Bangor University USA Country Guide 2014/15 www.bangor.ac.uk/international
Being in Wales, it was certainly a priority for me to understand the people and the culture. A highlight was when a Welsh classmate invited me to visit his village and home. I also enjoyed hiking up in the hills above Bangor. The international students I knew came from all six continents, and I especially got close to several African and Middle Eastern students, and my conversations with them really enlightened my knowledge and my thinking.
