Let's Help House No.2 ! What Happened? Eight male students of Special Education Class used to live separately in different houses with other students. But since January of this year, they started to live by themselves in House No.2. There were two house teachers to accompany the students with intellectual disabilities in House No. 2. However, one of the house teachers stopped working at the end of April, which caused a big difficulty of taking care of the students

in House No.2. The most difficult thing for the remained house teacher was to go to the market with a student every morning before dawn. Since it was too demanding, Special Education team suggested one good idea: Notify this issue to other students and ask for their help! As a result, fortunately, 30 students volunteered to accompany the House No.2 students going to market in the morning.

Volunteer Students for House No. 2

The 30 volunteer students first gathered together on May 18. On this day, Mr.Sopheap and Br. Hakjoon explained about how to help the students with intellectual disabilities. The volunteer students continued this gathering once

a month, to share their experiences and feelings and to ask teachers about their difficulties. From May 19 to August 14, for about 3 months, they took turns in helping the students at House No.2 to go to the market.

Voices from... I was glad to let them know about how to go to market.

I enjoyed bringing them to the market to buy food and check the changes together.

It was very difficult because the students were not good at counting money. And since they took a lot of time buying things, we had to come back late.

I was happy to go to market with them. There was nothing difficult!

Here at BP, I didn't recognize their disabilities. But when I went to market with them, I found out that they cannot buy things by themselves. I think I could also do good deeds through them.

I volunteered 7 times in total. I gave money to the students to pay by themselves, but it seemed like they were afraid and they didn't want to buy by themselves.

I felt happy when I went to help the House #2 students to go to market!

It must be very challenging for volunteer students. But even students on wheelchairs were willing to volunteer!

On July 1, teachers, staff, students and volunteers gathered together and celebrated with the students who completed the courses. Teachers gave a speech and students expressed gratitude towards BP. On the following weekend, students went back home. We pray for the next chapter of their journey!

New Face

in Banteay Prieb

Daniela start a day with the mass and to hear the gospel almost every day – but I really enjoy. Very often the texts go along with me during the days. One gospel which touched me once again and which expressed exactly what I come to know these days is the gospel from Matthew (6, 19-21):

Daniela Leimgruber / New Volunteer from Switzerland

For three months, more or less, I have lived and worked in Banteay Prieb now. From the first day I felt very happy and comfortable here in Cambodia, even when my body had to confront the heat, mosquitos and the standard of living here. Although I came from one of the richest countries in the world (Switzerland) to one of the poorest (Cambodia), I never felt so rich before as now. The people here, especially the students in Banteay Prieb, make me rich through their love, happiness and cheerfulness they share with me. I came here after I finished my studies in Social Work to share my abilities and knowledge, but I realized that I would never be able to give that much as I get from the people around me. The life in the community of the Jesuits is very good in the way to reflect and share my experiences. It is new for me to

Make no store of wealth of yourselves on earth, where it may be turned to dust by worms and weather, and where thieves may come in by force and take it away. But make a store for yourselves in heaven, where it will not be turned to dust and where thieves do not come in to take it away. For where your wealth is, there will your heart be. The gospel doesn’t explain what kind of store we should make for ourselves in heaven, however I can feel that my personal treasure chest is getting fuller and fuller these days. Even though the barrier of language exists between me and the students in Banteay Prieb, in the moments when I play volleyball or boccia with the male students, when the ladies teach me how to weave or do a new hairstyle for me, when I help the students of Special Education Class to wash their clothes or release them of the lice in their hair, when the students try to teach me the right pronunciation of a word in Khmer in a very patient way, I feel myself very rich and thankful. I can feel a piece of heaven on earth.

We Can Use Solar

Energy Now!

-A New Solar Power Generator Built by Korea Green Foudation In August, Korea Green Foundation has built a solar power generator inside Banteay Prieb. It was carried out as their project, 'Solar Energy Project in Cambodia'. From now, a monthly average of 810kWh will be generated by its solar power system. We are expecting that this will help us in the bill to save the electricity as much as 157 USD every month. We also hope that the new solar power generation will let our BP students to learn about the environment and the alternative energy.
