HOMECOMING DAY It was a Homecoming Day on October 28. About 50 graduate students came to visit BP again. First, the JSC Ecology team and Special Education team gave seminars to all students. Then, the current and graduate students were separated by their subject and gathered together in their classrooms. The graduate students shared their
experiences with the current students. In the afternoon, all students gathered and they had presentations and Q&A session. After the programs, we had a happy time having a big dinner and dancing all together, although we had to stop dancing one hour earlier than expected because of rain. (Photos by Yong-Guk Jeon)
HOMECOMING DAY
Remembering the Love of Richie Fernando... In 1996, there was one young man who loved the students of Banteay Prieb. His name was Richie Fernando, a Jesuit brother from the Philippines, having a regency in Banteay Prieb. One day, there was an accident of a grenade explosion. At that time, Richie sacrificed himself to save the other students and teachers. It was October 17, 1996. On October 18th this year, we commemorated the 20th anniversary of the death of Richie Fernando. Banteay Prieb will never forget his love for Cambodian people. (Photos by Yong-Guk Jeon)
d n e k e e W A of Make-Up Class Students During September, Make-Up class students went to visit children at APCA Metabolic Children’s Center. APCA (Assistance to Poor Children Agency) is an orphanage that houses around 100 children in Kampong Speu Province. Make-Up class students did make-up to the children. It was for the Make-Up class students to
get experience outside as well as give joy to the children at the center. Make-Up class students visited this place twice in September, and in October they went to practice at a beauty shop where the class teacher Ms. Somart runs. Make-Up class students seemed already professional! Pictures are from the day 11 of September.
Celebrating the Day of Persons with Disabilities
All BP students and staff -
all in all around 200 people - joined the celebration of the National and International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Phnom Penh held by the government on December 6. Out of the 2000 participants, Banteay Prieb was the biggest group in the huge theatre. Beside a speech of Hun Sen, Cambodian Prime Minister, the program included different performances from people with disabilities. (Article & Photos by Daniela Leimgruber)

New Faces SIYA
Siya Khim / New Cambodian Staff
I am Siya. I am a staff of Outreach team and also a house teacher number 12. The first time when I came here with Fr. Ingun, I felt so good and peaceful in my heart. I liked the scenery. It was a beautiful place for me. Then the second time I came here, I decided to work to have a new experience and to help the students with disabilities. I wanted to share my love with them. When I came to work for the first day I

in Banteay Prieb cleaned the students' house. On the second day when the students came, I was very busy because we did not prepare everything well. It was surprising for me at that time because I was also new here. I had no experience to look after the students but the principle asked to take care for them (the students who came to study Literacy for 3 months) that I had never known before. I did not know anything and everything was new for me. So it made me hard a little bit. During the first week with the students with disabilities, it was hard for us. Because I saw some students crying and unhappy (they were homesick). I tried to ask her name but she did not reply. Later on, day by day we started to have close communication with one another. After all, we could have fun together laughing and talking a lot. Lastly, I can say that : Staying with the students is a good chance and a main source of power for me. Because I can understand them very well such as their fellings, their behaviors, and so on. Moreover, I can learn a lot from them, especially the deep joy in my heart. All of them are precious and joy to me. Thanks!

SANDEEP unknown for me before coming to Banteay Prieb. Now this world have become source of happiness and peace for me. Most of the time here I stay with the students. It includes playing with them, sitting down and listening to them, sometimes eating with them and visiting their families. Whenever I spend time with them I get special kind of happiness and peace within me and I find myself one among them. Every time they teach me that all the Sandeep Kujur / Jesuit Brother from India

New Faces CARMEN
Carmen Frank / New Volunteer from Austria
My name is Carmen Frank, I’m 44 years old and I will spend one year as a volunteer in Cambodia. Why did I decide to leave my family and my work as a social consultant and supervisor for mentally ill people in Austria to “jump into the unknown” of a social project in Asia? There were certainly several reasons but the most striking one was that my daughter took her first steps into adult life by beginning to study law and to work as well as moving
in Banteay Prieb out of our apartment to stand on her own feet. Perhaps a good time for me to also gain new experiences, to get to know a different culture and work environment and to learn new facets of myself. The fact that I finally came to Banteay Prieb was not originally planned. Nevertheless I feel very grateful to be here, to watch how the impressing, inspiring and highly professional pilot project of the Special education is developing and how the first students will complete their training in May 2017 after two years of continuous motivated work. Although without being able to speak Khmer properly, every day is a challenge for me. I enjoy spending time with the students. In addition, I use the opportunity to expand my horizons: washing the laundry fine and clean by hands together with the students, learning about Cambodian vegetables, gardening and cooking and realizing what vocational training on the one hand and teacher and parent training on the other hand in this specific context really means. It ’s a great joy for me to accompany the students while they are growing and c o n n e c t i n g w i t h fe l l o w s t u d e n t s a n d teachers, becoming more self-confident and independent every day. I wish wholeheartedly to contribute…
With the student of Special Education class
On November 26 (Saturday), Banteay Prieb held a special event for volunteers from KCOC (Korea NGO Council for Overseas Development Cooperation). In the morning session, we had a tour in BP and ate lunch together prepared by the Craft Peace Café. In the afternoon session, there were two special lectures provided by BP local staffs at the Craft Peace Cafe. The first lecture was given by Ms. Phalla and Cristina (BP Special Education Team) about ‘ The Reality of Intellectually Challenged People in Cambodia’. The second lecture was given by Mr. Yuth (BP Outreach Team Manager) about ‘The Story of a Social Worker for People with Disabilities in Cambodia’. We hope that it was a good opportunity to broaden the knowledge and understanding the life and reality of people with disabilities in Cambodia.
