The Oldest Swinger in Town ‘BAR and CLUBBING Mag’ takes a seat with ‘Neil Walker’ someone we consider to be a bit of a local legend here in Tameside, who, at 70 years old doesn’t feel like slowing and sitting down to a fix of TV Dinners and gardening. Neil takes a great pride in showing me some old clubbing photographs from a stack he has kept to remind him of his social journey. “It began for me some 25 years back after the relationship I was in came to a close” Neil states, “I’ve always liked going out as most people do and I have many memories of nights out at home and abroad” .. Neil continues this article … A fond memory for me was ‘Cherries Nightclub’ which was in Droylsden, this was probably the big spot of the time where most people frequented in the mid-eighties, Rix-the-Mix (an old Ashton DJ) was a glass collector at that time, he was only 16 and he went on to assist there as he caught the music bug and started DJ’ing Cherries may have closed some 18 years ago but I enjoyed a great reunion in September and we have another one booked in for March 2011 which I’m looking forward to very much. Ashton-u-Lyne was always a busy town, it was the place to be, I used to love going to Sparx, Universal, Loveshack (which then became Loft) Sunday nights were great as I met so many young people that would love to come and chat to me you could always see Neil bobbing away and lip syncing to the big tracks of the moment with a pint and a cigarette next to the dancefloor – the conversation turns to Music as Neil sits back in his chair lighting another cigarette and sipping from a big mug of tea “Early Music memories for me was the ‘Walsall Concerto’ (classical) to The Ink Spots (Jazz), and the Chris Barber Jazz Band. Lonnie Donegan, was their banjo player that left to do some solo recordings I also liked Buddy Holly and loads of other bands

serious as his thoughts turn toward the demise of Ashton “ I loved ‘Molly Malones in its prime but then the town got violent and some people got hurt, the bars gradually closed one by one and the focus and nightlife picked up in neighbouring Stalybridge St Petersfield (between Ashton and Stockport Road) was supposed to be a new stomping ground for fresh bars and restaurants but this just didn’t materialise, I enjoyed ‘Bar Max’ and I still pop in Ruby Rooms although the music is a bit heavy but like being served by the nice staff in there, I frequent ‘The Bridge Inn’ and have heard more 60’s music than I need but it’s a good party bar and I’m always open to a change of genre to stop me getting bored

*

I’m not a pipe and slippers man!

‘I have nights out in Stoke, Blackpool and I’ve even clubbed in ‘Es Paradis’ and ‘Manumission’ in Ibiza, you won’t see me on a sea cruise just yet, I don’t see holidays as a resting time and I don’t see myself slowing down, not until I have to – I’m not a pipe and slippers man!’ The conversation turns to drink, and Neil likes to keep it simple ‘ I like a good pint of John Smiths and treat myself to a shot or two of Glen Morangie Whisky or Jamesons, bottled beers are just too gassy but last Saturday night I did actually have a Sambuca with some friends’ Food wise I won’t go in the kebab shops but I’m known to have the odd pizza and the best meal for me is a nice carvery during the week

We take a fun photograph for this interview and Neil says to ring him if I need some more material. A movie called ‘Blackboard Jungle’ (from 1955) Neil for me, is a local piece of history with years of used the track ‘Rock around the Clock’ which was fun and stories etched into his face, a real character, probably one of the first ‘Teen Flicks’ produced a gent that you are more than likely to bump into about unruly teenagers in a tough school – we went during your travels in Stalybridge and beyond. to see this movie and everyone was dancing in the Oh, and before I forget, if you see him, ask him to aisles, the ushers and management couldn’t stop do his ‘eyebrow dancing’ - fantastic ! us, it was one of those ‘had to be there’ moments “ Neil grins broadly with this reminiscing then gets

Dancefloor Addict! Welcome back after the Christmas period. Usually January sees a lack of anything good released, however i’ve been digging deep and finding some right crackers for you! I’ve ditched the Boogieometer for a more discerning marks out of ten, handbag !

Arno Cost

Rihanna & Drake

Klub Killaz

What’s My Name

All I Think About Is You

It goes:- Simply “Music Sounds Better” over the music of “One More Time”

It goes:- “Ooh Nah Na, What’s my name?” (over and over again)

It goes:- “All I think about is you, hope you’re thinking of my too”

Nelly

Sherbet Dip

It goes:- “I was think ‘bout us, thinkin’ ‘bout me”

It goes:- “Stop! Hammer time” then it goes bonkers!

One More Sounds Better

Rihanna seems to released a track from her album every Yawn Yawn Daft Punk & Stardust get a rework... there’s one every week, BUT this is day, this is the winner though. Whilst THE ONE! Arno Cost builds more than just a Drake’s impact in the Uk has been slower than expected this will surely break him cheeky mash up, it’s a full on piece of tech into the mainstream. There’s allegations of house with looping epic synths eventually alzheimer’s as Rihanna keeps asking what dropping into the music from “One More her name is and reminiscent of Groundhog Time” and the vocal of “Music Sounds Better”. Make no mistake, this is a quality piece Day as she repeats it continually until it’s drummed into your break. Very cheeky of house music. 8/10 indeed! 8/10

Just A Dream (CLX Remix)

With rumours of Nelly’s comeback, people have been panic buying plasters. If this is anything to go by, then they’d be right to! Whatever you think of Nelly, you can’t argue with the fact he always delivers something you can sing to. The CLX remix is the one! It’s a nice bouncy yet funky house rework which kicks in and out of the original and works wonders with me! 8/10

Hammer Time

Most producers would and should be shot for sampling MC Hammer, but Sherbet Dip has turned out this mental jackin’ tune which actually blew my monitor speaker the other week. Parachute pants at the ready as this tune is gonna blow up as soon as this Brummie sound filters up north properly. This one is Heavy!!! 8/10

This is by far the best thing these guys have done reworking “Checker One” by Da Loops. Having been done several times before it’s not an original choice but never done to this standard. With fresh piano chords and a nice bouncy bassline with enough balls to destroy any dance floor. 9/10

Danny Byrd Rave Digger

It goes:- very nicely indeed Drum & Bass is currently as fashionable as Hayley Cropper’s coat, but for a fairly consistent genre of music, that’s when we see some of the best productions. Whilst students have got their head in dubstep, true music lovers have got their head in this, a soulful album which develops D&B even further. Whilst yo’ve got commercial winners like “Ill Behaviour”, you’ve got some real gems on the album too. Check “Judgement Day” & “Wait For Me”. 9/10
