Introduction Famous Quotation: "Those who dwell as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth, are never alone or weary of life." Best known for: Stopping some pesticides because it was hurting animals!
3 Key Qualities:
1. Persevered 2. Communicated and shared 3. Impact: Made a difference
What I find interesting: Rachel cared so much about animals and tried to help them a lot so it would be a better world. I think that was thoughtful. I chose this person because... She helped nature and I like nature!
Overcame a Hardship/Challenge Some people did not want to stop using pesticides. Rachel Carson kept trying and then some pesticides were illegal.
Showed Compassion and Empathy The Woods Hole Marine biology laboratory on Cape Cod was surrounded by ocean. It was all that Rachel dreamed of! She must have found lots of information because there is a lot to learn there about animals and she loved animals.
Took Action Rachel had a summer cottage built in Maine along the estuary of the Sheep Scot river near a place called Dogfish Head. There were so many animals there for her to learn about and to help. I wonder what types of animals she found and where they live.
Persevered Rachel was responsible. She wrote a book about how pesticides hurt living things. But it did not get better right away. Rachel had to keep trying to stop pesticides and help animals.
Impact: How Things are Different Today Eventually the government made some pesticides illegal.
She helped by studying animals and seeing how bad pesticides were for them and for other living things.
The next year Rachel's sister Marian died. Rachel must have been sad but she was responsible. She wanted to help a lot.
Viewed Problems as Opportunities Rachel learned that people were hurting nature. She tried to help. She studied pesticides and saw how bad it was. She shared her information with lots of people and tried to stop pesticides.
Communicated and Shared Rachel tells people (even children) not to use chemicals! Rachel is strong about what she wants to do. Many people think that the last book Rachel wrote, Silent Spring, was one of the most important books ever written about the environment.
Writing
Communicated and Shared When she was 10, Rachel wrote stories for a children's magazine.
Rachel's first book was called Under The Sea Wind. It was about the sea and the animal facts.
