The Wright Brothers Wilbur 1867-1871 Orville 1871-1948
Fletcher B. Willow Room June 2013
Introduction Famous Quotation: "The airplane stays up because it doesn't have time to fall." Best known for: The Wright brothers are best known for building bikes, gliders and planes.
What I find interesting: The Wright brothers are a team and not a single person. They built the first airplane.
3 Key Qualities: 1. Demonstrated bravery 2. Took action 3. Learned from mistakes
I chose this person because...my first choice was my great grandfather. He made army airplanes and that helped me to become interested in airplanes and the Wright brothers.
Overcame a Hardship/Challenge Orville and Wilbur had a hard time figuring out how to steer the planes. The challenge was how to make the wings and the tail move.
I think it is great that the rudder that planes use today is based on the ideas of Orville and Wilbur Wright.
Showed Compassion and Empathy I read that Orville got really sick. Wilbur sat with him and read books about flying and airplanes. Orville eventually got better.
I think Wilbur showed compassion and empathy because he took care of his brother when he was sick.
Took Action I read that Orville and Wilbur needed three things to build a plane: 1. Strong wings 2. An engine 3. A way to steer
I think the brothers started to try different ways to make the wings move so they could steer the plane and fly.
Persevered I read that the brothers built a wind tunnel and tested more than 200 wing shapes.
I think they kept on trying until they got a wing shape that worked.
Impact: How Things are Different Today Orville and Wilbur started learning about flying by experimenting with kites and gliders.
I think that they got a lot of work done. Their ideas helped people build the first airplane in the world.
Demonstrated Bravery I read that Orville and Wilbur had to lie down in the gliders to try to steer them. It was difficult! You could go up and crash down if the steering didn't work.
I think the brothers were brave because they risked their lives.
The Wright Brothers Persevered when: they made a wing tunnel and had to test more than 200 wing shapes.
Showed compassion when: Wilbur took care of his brother, Orville, when he was sick.
Took action by: figuring out three different things they needed to make a plane fly: strong wings, an engine, and a way to steer. Then the started to make those things.
Made a difference when: their ideas helped build the first airplane in the world.
Author Talk I’m similar to my Change Maker because...I build, create, explain, experiment and discover new things to build.
My Change Maker is connected to...other creators and inventors. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb and Henry Ford invented the car.
I’m a Change Maker when I...look at something and build a Lego version. My creating makes my family feel proud.

Glossary A Change Maker is: 1) someone who stands up for rights. 2) someone who changes things that are unfair. 3) an inventor.
Rudder - A rudder is the tail of an airplane. A rudder that can move helps the pilot steer the plane.
Wind Tunnel - A wind tunnel is a small space with wind that comes from a fan. They put a model airplane in the tunnel to see what wind does to the wings.
Pitch - when the plane is taking off, the nose needs to be pointing up and not down.
