Dr. Martin Luther King JR. 1929-1968
Jackson G. Buckeye Room May 2013
Introduction Famous Quotation: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they are not judged by the color of their skin color but by the content of their character." Best known for: For changing white only laws.
What I find interesting:
That he never gave up.
3 Key Qualities:
1. non violent 2. never gave up 3. peaceful
I chose this person because... He made a big change that I wanted to learn about.
Overcame a Hardship/Challenge His friends could no longer play with him because he was black.
I think his friend felt sad and his parents were not allowing him to play with Martin.
Showed Compassion and Empathy Martin loved his enemies but he would hate the things they did. He was about to not get up for a white passenger on the bus. He did get up for his teacher because she did not want to get into trouble. If he hurt or killed his enemies it would start a bigger war or fight.
The teachings of Gandhi was one of Dr. inspirations.
Took Action The Southern Leadership Conference elected MLK president.
I think he could change how African Americans were treated by joining the SLC.
Persevered He never gave up on changing things for people that were treated unfairly and won the Noble Peace prize.
I think he did this so things would be fair for blacks so that they could have the same access to stores, schools, and work.
Impact: How Things are Different Today Blacks are treated fairly.
I think they listened to him and the laws changed to have laws that treated people fairly and with equity.
Viewed Problems as Opportunities African Americans were not allowed to go into some stores.
MLK saw an opportunity for the laws to be changed.
Demonstrated Bravery He would not back down from making sure everybody has equal rights even though his life was threatened.
I think he did not back down to help himself, his family and his community.
Communicated and Shared His message to the people was to use words and stand up for ones rights in a peaceful way. He gave speeches all over the country. He shared his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Martin Luther King, Jr. He persevered when he went to jail and still fought for Civil Rights.
He showed compassion when he didn't fight.
He took action by going out and giving speeches and supporting other people who were fighting for Civil Rights.
Dr. King made a difference when he helped pass the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
Author Talk I’m similar to my Change Maker because...I would make sure people are treated fairly. If someone is being bullied and being called a "nerd" I would show the bully that they should be treated with fairness.
I’m a Change Maker when I stand up for the right thing that will help if people are judged unfairly.
My Change Maker is connected to...Rosa Parks. One time MLK did not want to get up on a bus.

Someone who helps makes the right laws and helps to change the unfair laws.
Segregation: Laws that keep people apart from attending the same schools, shopping at the same stores, using the same restrooms and drinking from the same water fountains.
Civil Rights: The rights of all people.
He would fight without hitting but used his words and he would change the things that were wrong.
