introduction Famous Quotation: "The first gay people we elect must be strong. They must not be content to sit in the back of the bus. They must not be content to accept the Problem. They must be above wheeling and dealing. They must be for the good of all of us--independent."
He is best known for fighting for equal rights for gay people.
3 Qualities: hardship strong mind perseverance
what I find interesting is that when he ran for the public office in SF and he lost he kept trying until he won.
he had a lot of interesting facts in his life such as running for the SF Board of Supervisors.
In 1973 he opened a shop called CASTRO CAMERA in San Francisco on Castro street. HE had no legal protection and he could be harassed by the police. he could lose his job and home. I think that that is very dangerous and he is risking having no home, no job and no money and being broke.
He convinced the mayor and 10 out of the 11 Supervisors to vote for the gay rights bill. He wanted to make gay people's lives easier and more fair. HE realized that gay people were not having a good time so he tried to help. I think that it shows compassion and empathy because if you were gay back in the 1900's life was not easy. You did not have the same rights as not gay people but Milk changed that.
in 1951 He joined the navy and became the head of a underwater submarine rescue vessel called the U.S. Kittywake. He survived the war which was very dangerous and he could have gotten killed. I think that you have to be brave to go in a war because you are risking your own life and you are doing some good to most people.
HARVEY MILK was elected to the SF Board of SUPERVISORS in 1978. He was the first gay man to become a Supervisor for the mayor.
I think he is taking action because he is the first one to do this. He is showing everyone that they can do what they want. There is no difference between gay people and not gay people.
he finished college a year early and was handed his diploma on a warm day in june 1951. I think that takes a strong mind because finishing college a year early takes a strong mind and hard work.
He ran for the San francisco board of supervisors in 1973 and 1975 and he lost. in 1976 he lost the state assembly election. But he did not give up. in 1977 he won a spot on the san francisco board of supervisors. i think that it takes perseverence to have thought "i'm going to do this and I'm going to keep trying as many times as it takes."
Now gay people have the same rights as not gay people. Life is a lot more fair and now gay people can live out in the open. I think that he must have thought that he felt like a hero and that he made history too.
PERSEVERED WHEN he ran for public office in san francisco and lost the first three times. But the fourth time he won.
SHOWED COMPASSION WHEn he convinced the mayor and 10 out of 11 Supervisors for the mayor to sign a gay rights bill. he wanted to make gay peoples lives easier and more fair.
took action by being elected to the SF BOARD oF SUPERVISORS in 1978. he was the first gay man to be elected to become a supervisor for the mayor.
MADE A DIFFERENCE WHEN he fought for the rights of gay people now gay peple have the same rights as not gay people.
I'm Similar to my change maker because: I think that everyone should have the same rights too.
I'm A change maker when I pick up trash around the bay and other places.
My Change maker is connected to BARACK OBAMA because like 2 weeks ago barack obama said Ithink that gay people should have the same rights as not gay people.
