Introduction Famous Quotation: "Well done is better than well said."
Best known for: inventing things that are important.
What I find interesting: that he is very important.
3 Key Qualities:
1.Communicated and shared 2. Learned from mistakes 3. Took action
I chose this person because he invented a lot of inventions.
Overcame a Hardship/Challenge When Ben was young, his dad didn't have that much money so he had to be home schooled, work in the barn, and in a soap shop. I think it was hard for him because he had to work when he was only 10.
Showed Compassion and Empathy In 1765 Ben was in England for 10 years! He really wanted to give more rights to the thirteen colonies. When the king refused, he traveled to France to ask for money and help. I think this shows compassion because he stood up for his colonies' rights and freedom.
Took Action Ben wrote part of the Declaration of Independence in 1976. He also helped write the U.S. Constitution in 1785. The Declaration stated the U.S. 's independence from Great Britain. The Constitution stated independence for the 13 colonies. I think he felt really proud of himself when he was asked to write all of this important writing.
PERSEVERED Ben invented a lot of inventions and if they did not work the first time, he would just try again. Like the first library, (which opened in1731.) At first people didn't borrow books but they never shut it down so eventually people did! I think it does not always work the first time every time.
Impact: How Things are Different Today Ben invented the lightning rod in Philadelphia. He helped make the first hospital and he also made the first bifocals, and many more! The lightning rod makes lightning hit the ground instead of the house. Bifocals compare two sets of lenses in one pair of glasses. I think it has impact because many of those might not be here today if he did not invent them.
Viewed Problems as Opportunities Ben saw that people could only see far or only see near which was a problem so he made it an opportunity to make a new invention. He invented bifocals in 1784. I think bifocals are cool because you can see far and near at the same time.
Learned from Mistakes In June 1752 Ben Franklin used a kite to experiment with electricity. He tied a key to a kite on a stormy day. He tried to prove that lightning is electricity. Lightning hit the key. He saw sparks which led to the invention of the lightning rod. I think it was a very dangerous experiment. It must have hurt when he pressed his knuckle to the key.
Communicated and Shared Ben started his own printing shop. In 1729 he started a newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette. At first he was the only worker. He was the editor, reporter, typesetter, and business manager. I think he had a hard time starting his own newspaper all by himself.
Benjamin Franklin Persevered when: he invented many inventions and if they did not work the first time he would just try, try, again.
Showed compassion when: he was in England for 10 years to give rights and freedom to his people.
Took action by: writing part of the Declaration of Independence.
Made a difference when: he experimented with lightning.
