INNOVATION - Conference onboard full of many projects
For its recent Conference, District 6780 (USA) used an unusual approach to be inniova ve : the event was held on a cruise ship. Governor Deborah Alexander-Davis and her team set two goals: to help new members make personal connec ons and provide meaningful experience for all par cipants. The event began with fellowship and networking so that the guests became familiar with each other. Later, during a day of community service in Nassau, Bahamas, par cipants installed pre-built libraries, restored mangroves and painted buildings for the Salva on Army. The team worked closely together with District 7020 in Nassau and RI President-elect Barry Rassin from the Bahamas to plan these and ďŹ ve other humanitarian projects. The District 6780 promoted the cruise launching a challenge in social media to see which club would get the most number of likes and shared posts for releasing the event. Enthusiasm for the ini a ve helped a ract 201 par cipants, some from six other districts.
Community assessment: Assurance of success Assessing the strengths, weaknesses, needs, and resources of a community is the ďŹ rst step in developing strategic and sustainable projects. For years, Rotary clubs and districts have done that and achieved great impact. Knowing its importance, RI has decided that from July 1 on, every applica on for Global Grant will have to be accompanied by a community assessment. If your club or district plans to apply for a Global Grant to fund a vocaonal training project or team, evaluate the community ďŹ rst. Complete the form and a ach it to the order. Why does POLIO require a lot of investment? Eradica ng an illness requires a lot of financial investment. The number of cases represented by the remaining 1% is the most difficult to prevent due to factors including geographic isola on, precarious public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Un l polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk for outbreaks of the disease. To ensure the success of the program for the next three years, only Rotary will raise $ 150 million, along with other major global contributors. Each dollar of this sum will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Founda on in the ra o of 2 to 1. These funds are used to cover opera onal costs with immuniza on campaigns, surveillance of new cases including the network of laboratories, human resources with recruitment of area professionals health, training, monitors, drivers, guides, managers, purchase, transport and packaging of vaccines, communica on, graphic material, megaphones, banners, social mobiliza on, laboratory equipment and educa onal materials for health agents. As endemic areas have varying opera onal difficul es to reach children at risk of polio, efforts must be maintained un l the last child, up to eradica on, to a polio-free world.
