The idea of the project came out so that people could donate items of clothing every day, according to Edgard Hernandes, President of the Rotary Club of Santos. Funding was provided through District Rotary Grants for this club of US$ 3,000. Four collec ng containers were delivered and installed in strategic points in the city of Santos, one of them is in front of Parque Balneário Mall. The Solidarity Social Fund of Santos will distribute the collected items to approximately 26,000 people registered in the program. The president of the Solidarity Social Fund of Santos, Maria Inês Barbosa said that the importance of this ini a ve of Rotary, "is fundamental for our popula on." On January 23, the project was officially handed out and was a ended by countless Rotarians, the Governor of the D4420 Carlos Torci and the Mayor Paulo Barbosa, who took the opportunity to highlight that "the project encourages solidarity gestures every day and comes against the mo o of the city of Santos: Land of Freedom and Charity ".

Pakistan reduces POLIO cases with preven on ac ons

Poliomyeli s cases have been progressively declining, but 33 cases were reported in 2019: 21 cases in Afghanistan and 12 cases in Pakistan. The reless work for polio eradica on has a structured surveillance network seeking to iden fy the virus in the environment. The existance of a virus is an indicator of risk for infec on. Pakistan has stepped up its polio program, which has already resulted in a 96% reduc on in cases between 2014 and 2018. Preven on efforts in the country have been stepped up with the so-called Na onal Immuniza on Days as part of the Emergency Plan for years 2018-2019. Between 10 and 13 December, 3.9 million children were vaccinated. The program has had enormous mobiliza on to reach even children in transit as in border areas and means of transport, and the vaccina on coverage rate reached 95%. We hope that all this mobiliza on is awarded with a reduc on in the number of cases in 2019. Unfortunately, this is not yet the year we will celebrate the eradica on of polio because 03 cases have been recorded so far, one in Afghanistan and two in Pakistan. But, as Rotarians, we will keep working to achieve our great goal which is the eradica on of polio in the world. Source: Polio Global Eradica on Ini a ve.
