Also in the Raval, a retro theme permeates this entire street, with record shops, chill-out cafés and a hairdresser that specialises in throwback looks. On Saturdays the shops often spill out onto the street creating an open-air market.
An increasing number of pop-up markets appear each month with their bubbly vendors, DJs and performances, special promotions and a fun, relaxed atmosphere where you can shop to your heart’s content or simply hang out.
Xuxu & Vintage (Riera Baixa, 12). Browse deep and you‘ll be deeply rewarded. Friendly staff can help you to mix and match your items and create a unique look.
Flea Market Barcelona are rolling out another edition of their famous gathering on the 14th January from 11am-5pm at Plaça Blanquerna, behind the Maritime Museum in Drassanes. More than just a market, this is a popular event where you can meet with friends for the day whilst enjoying the lively vibe and eclectic entertainment.
Lullaby (Riera Baixa, 22). The first thing you’ll notice here is the awesome soundtrack courtesy of its musician owners. Clothes are arranged by decades, and the 60s and 70s sections are especially well stocked. La Vella Maia (Riera Baixa, 10). Although officially an antiques store, this combines the grace and authority of a museum with the chance to buy vintage bags and accessories.
Other markets are Lost and Found, one of the biggest vintage dates in the Barcelona calendar. Barcelona Vintage Market hosts over 200 stalls selling bric-a-brac and second hand items at the Estación de Francia. SITGES
AND THE CARNIVAL The streets of Sitges explode with dance, music, parades and parties during the week of the mighty Sitges Carnival, which takes place this year from 8th-14th February. This small beach town situated 35km away from Barcelona fills with flamboyant feathers and colourful costumes, a tradition that has lasted for over 700 years to mark the start of Lent. The Carnival will attract roughly 300,000 visitors, and is sure to give Rio a run for its money.
CARNESTOLTES According to tradition, “King Carnestoltes” makes an appearance on the first Thursday of the celebrations to welcome everyone to the carnival. He absolves everyone’s sins throughout the weekend and presides over the carnival's wild behaviour and debauchery. He is tried and burnt on the last day, which marks the end of the festival and beginning of Lent. This is an especially fun event in Sitges, where glamorous drag queens and widows dramatically mourn the end of the festivities and transgressions. FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD! Over the week, look out for the carnival’s most classic, tasty treat, the Catalan xatonada. The dish combines a mouth-watering mixture of frilly endive salad, anchovies, tuna and salted cod 26

(bacallà) served with a xató sauce made with almonds, hazelnuts and breadcrumbs. Alternatively, branch out from the conventional Spanish paella and tickle your taste buds with a Catalan fideuà. The ingredients are predominantly the same as a paella, however in a fideuà, the rice is replaced by a stringy noodle type of pasta and accompanied by a dollop of juicy alioli. For the ultimate fideuà restaurant experience go to Abraxas Restaurant (meaning ‘hugs’ in Catalan!) at Paseo de la Ribera, 15. Advance booking recommended. GAY FRIENDLY Sitges is renowned as a popular LGBTQ tourist destination and is famous for its open minded community. The Sitges Carnival includes a huge range of parallel events, activities and nightlife for men and women.
FEATURES CARNIVAL FUN Sitges is famous for hosting one of the largest and certainly the most flamboyant carnival parades and parties in Spain. Dress up, dress loud and come prepared for a vibrant festive experience.

Jueves Lardo (Lardy Thursday/ Mardi Gras)
Rua de l’Extermini (Extermination Parade)
His Majesty Carnestoltes arrives in town, declares a week of unlimited fun and announces the beginning of the carnival.
Much the same as the Debauchery Parade, expect an extravagant procession of loud music, wild performers and drag queens.
SUNDAY 11TH
WEDNESDAY 14TH
Rua Infantil (Children’s Parade) Rua de la Debauxa (Debauchery Parade)
Enterrament de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine) Ash Wednesday
The Parade of Debauchery welcomes around 150,000 visitors to watch the colourful procession of costumes, feathers, masks, floats, acrobats, dancers and other performers. The children’s parade is a tamer version of the evening event.
In the final parade of the Carnival, the townspeople dress up and carry a huge Sardine in a funeral procession, symbolising a burial of the past and a new society to be reborn. 27
GREETINGS & CHAT One of the most rewarding aspects of travel is meeting new people. Here a few friendly phrases you can use to break the ice and say hello in Catalan and Spanish.

CIRC RALUY Circus
The Raluy circus has been coming to Barcelona for the last 18 years and offers a classic circus experience with a different twist every time. The clowns have red noses and cry huge crocodile tears, the tightrope walkers make you hold your breath, and the acrobats' gravity-defying stunts leave you searching for invisible wires that probably aren't there. This new show includes international performers and is fun for all the family. Port Vell, Moll de la Fusta. www.raluy.com

L'ELISIR D'AMORE Opera
One of the most delightful comic, and at the same time romantic operas in the history of the genre. Nemorino is a naĂŻve lad who still believes in love potions to win over the heart of his beloved Adina. She makes him suffer until she herself succumbs and falls in love with him. Affection and mischief come together courtesy of the fresh, creative music by Donizetti, the last major proponent of the Italian comic opera. SANTA EULÀLIA Traditional
Is it fair to wonder whether Barcelona has two patron saints to squeeze yet another holiday into the annual agenda? Back in the 3rd century AD Eulàlia was brutally murdered and martyred as a young child for not refuting her religion. Her statue looks down from the top of Barcelona Cathedral onto the square, which hosts many activities. A myriad of shows, dances and folkloric performances take place during these festive days. Highlights include the human castles in Plaça St Jaume who reach for the skies on Sunday afternoon. Also on Sunday, the traditional gegants of Ciutat Vella, large sculptures that tower above the shoulders of their bearers, take a twirl in Plaça Reial. One of the most dramatic events will be the correfoc fire-run route which departs from opposite the Cathedral at in the evening. Immerse yourself in the action! UNDERESTIMATED AT GARAGE 442
If underground house and techno is your thing, then Underestimated at Garage 442 every second Friday of the month is a great place to shake some moves and get the night underway. The format is really interesting as they don’t pre-announce who will be spinning at the event, and it could feature a totally unknown DJ headlining, as well as supporting DJs/producers from the local scene with its 3 act billing format. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down C/ Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by the locals.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
