CYCLING IN the city
· · ·
Protective helments are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.
in the street
· · · 8
Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.
INFO
in your apartment
· · ·
Please keep quiet between 10pm and 8am. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday! Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.
ON THE BEACH
· ·
Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.
RECYCLING Barcelona is an eco-friendly city. Keep an eye out for the coloured recycling bins nearest to your apartment:

Remembering the Second World War AT The Catalan History Museum The seventieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps is commemorated with two exhibitions which run until the 18th October at the Catalan History Museum. These tragic hours of European and world history are remembered through the images and words of the people who experienced these horrors first hand.
Beyond Mauthausen. Francesc Boix, photographer The Catalan photographer Francesc Boix was held at the Mauthausen camp. His photographs of the Nazi deportations stand as witnesses to these crimes, and some of his images were used as evidence at the Nuremberg and Dachau trials. This exhibition is the first retrospective of the author, and it presents unedited images from his youth. These images come from the Commission for Dignity and from the period after the liberation from the archives of the Associaci贸 Amical of Mauthausen.
16
Fleeing the Holocaust. Catalonia and the Jewish refugees of the Second World War The exhibition recovers the unknown history of thousands of Jewish people who escaped the Nazi atrocities by crossing the Pyrenees. Some managed to get away, whilst others lost their lives. Visitors can get closer to the history and testimonial records of the time with projections of a selection of personal interviews with refugees, which were recorded between 2005 and 2014 by Mireia Boya and Josep Calvet, curators of the exhibition, and also experts on the escape routes used by the Jews in Spain during the Second World War. Catalan History Museum Pl. de Pau Vila, 3 (Palau de Mar) Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00-19:00. Wednesdays from 10:00-22:00. Sundays and public holidays from 10:00-14:30. Mondays closed (except public holidays).
Poblenou Cemetery: Free Guided Tours
F
unerary history offers a distinctive insight into the values and traditions of a culture. We have learned much about cultures as diverse as the Ancient Egyptians, Romans and African tribes by investigating the rituals and practices with which they honoured their deceased and provided their final resting place. The monumental Cemetery of Poblenou is a fascinating tribute to more recent Catalan history and is recognised by the Association of Significant Cemeteries of Europe for its outstanding funerary architecture which includes neoclassical art and Egyptian elements from the beginning of the 19th century. It was the first municipal cemetery in Barcelona, and served as a reference throughout the country.

You are invited to join a free guided tour which covers approximately one hundred years of history of the funerary enclosure and the city. It spans a timeline that stretches from its foundation in 1775 until 1888, when the Universal Exhibition was held for the first time in Barcelona. The cemetery offers a display of different periods and styles of some of the most important architects and sculptors of the XIX and XX centuries. You can also discover collective events and personal anecdotes that support the rich fabric of connections existing between the city and the cemetery.

a dragon on la rambla You may have found yourself wondering why there is a Chinese art deco dragon hanging on the edge of La Rambla 82, near the Miró mosaic. The dragon is holding a fan, and is perched above an umbrella - which gives us a good clue. It used to advertise an umbrella shop that was located here at the height of the "Japonisme" movement in the 1860s.

if the café del opera's walls could whisper... One of the oldest establishments on La Rambla, its history began as an 18th century tavern where carriages would depart towards Zaragoza and Madrid. During the next century it became a “Chocolatería” , and when the Liceu Opera House was established it took on its current identity. Let its Modernist interior take you on a journey through time. Gaudí’s Pedrera: The Origins
Photos: © Marc Vila
A fascinating journey into the origin of life on Barcelona’s most special terrace.
T
he endless creativity of nature was Gaudí's greatest source of inspiration, and this is reflected throughout his architecture. It is especially evident in La Pedrera, a uniquely shaped building that seems sculpted by powerful forces of nature, such as water and wind. This masterpiece of Modernism is an emblem of the city of Barcelona, and was inspired by the very essence of the universe. La Pedrera has launched a spectacular night experience that will leave no-one indifferent and which offers a fascinating and magical voyage to the beginning of time. "Gaudí's Pedrera: The Origins," is a unique show, with light, sound and projections on the roof of La Pedrera. Visitors will have their breath taken away by this exciting journey that charts a trajectory from the origins of the Earth, through the birth of civilizations, until the time of La Pedrera’s construction. This rooftop experience is the highlight of a guided visit that also offers intriguing insights into other aspects of Gaudí’s genius. The visit begins in the lobby, whose central courtyard is open to the sky above. Balconies snake around the central spiral and coloured patterns echo the movement of falling leaves. The lobby is the heart of the
22
house, and its organic swirling shape suggests an underwater cavern. Stepping out of the lift on the fourth floor, the first thing you will notice is the low domed ceilings that bear an uncanny resemblance to the skeleton of a python that stands in one of the display cases. The spirals of a nautilus seashell evoke the distinctive staircase of La Sagrada Família. Gaudí also designed much of the furniture for La Pedrera, including a selection of wooden chairs, ergonomically customised to fit the body's natural curves for maximum comfort. The tour finishes with a complimentary glass of cava in the lobby, a perfect ending to a magical night in Barcelona. s e v a W Cruise the waves by motorboat
Summer 2015 is proving to be a scorcher, with temperatures soaring towards one heat wave after the next, and August looks set to turn it up yet another notch. We caught up with the SkylineBcn crew to bring you one of the most appealing suggestions of the season: boat trips and Mediterranean dips.
32
Sleek and streamlined, the motorboat breaks the waves at a speed of 22 knots, which gets you to the nearby coastline of Masnou in just 20 minutes. The anchor is thrown down, and you can jump into the sea to cool off. When all the passengers are back on board, the anchor is raised and the boat zips on to Premià de Mar, to enjoy a traditional lunch in one of the most authentic chiringuitos of Catalonia. L’Ona was established in 1952 and is famed for its seafood paella and tapas, especially calamari and shellfish. Open motorboat tours leave daily from Port Olympic.
Sail away, sail away…
Sailing boat tours are also organized every day and last for 2 hours. “We decide each morning where to sail to,” explains the owner Victor de la Reguera, “as it depends which way the wind is blowing. The wind normally comes from the South, the Sahara, so we have warm air. When the wind blows from the North it’s colder and
FEATURES
indicates a more unsettled day.” An aperitif is served on the boat, for a taste of the good life. Some clients choose to hire the boat for a weekend and relax as the captain takes them to their destination of choice, cruises along the coastline, and gives on-shore recommendations for those who wish to explore dry land. Popular weekend destinations include Sitges and the Costa Brava. Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols can be easily reached and are havens of incredible natural beauty.
A week at sea
More adventurous clients sometimes choose to charter the boat for a longer trip to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The crossing to Mallorca takes about 17 hours. SkylineBcn prepare well for the journey, stocking up on fuel, food and drinks for the week, and taking their guests to secluded stretches of unspoiled coastline that can only be reached by sea. It’s worth noting that the boats which are used for all these trips, from 2 hour sails near Barcelona to longer escapades are in fact sturdy enough to cross the Atlantic. These 12 metre sailing boats can sleep up to 8 people and are fully equipped for a comfortable experience, with 2 bathrooms and a kitchen with an oven.
Swimming with dolphins Dolphins occasionally pass by to visit. “We see them a few times every month,” shares Victor. He explains that they tend to appear in shoals when people are swimming. These curious and sociable creatures detect the movements and sound in the water of people shouting and splashing, and swim up to see what’s happening. They hang around for a few minutes and then disappear back into the deeper waters.
For more information about SkylineBcn sailing yacht tours and motorboat tours, visit their office in Barceloneta at C/ Andrea Doria 51, or check out www.skylinebcn.com

FIGUERES & the Dalí Museum
Tucked away up the Costa Brava, this unassuming town situated just north of Girona would be overlooked by many, were it not for Salvador Dalí. The artist was born and raised here, and returned to live here after many years in the 1960s.
DALÍ THEATRE MUSEUM The building which Dalí transformed into his museum used to be the town's municipal theatre. It was burnt down at the end of the Civil War in 1939, but was restored and inaugurated in 1974. Even from a distance the Dalí Theatre Museum will immediately catch your eye with its enormous glass dome, pink wall encrusted with 1500 threecornered loaves of Catalan bread and topped with giant eggs, and some incredible statues in the square outside the entrance, all offering a taste of what awaits its visitors. The museum has a complicated array of rooms around a central semicircular garden area that contains a disused Cadillac covered in ivy containing three mannequins and various snails. If visitors put a coin into the slot provided, water washes over the inside of the car. In the Mae West room, a
34
bizarre collection of bedroom furniture forms the actress’ face when seen from an elevated platform. A picture in the main gallery transforms according to the viewer’s focus: ‘Gala Nude Watching the Sea, which, at a Distance of 20 metres, turns into the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln’. Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí, 5. 9:30-18:30. 12€
FIGUERES MODERNISM ROUTE Like jewels in this elegant town’s tiara, Catalan Modernism is represented by seven remarkable buildings in Figueres. Architect Josep Azemar i Pont introduced the style at the turn of the 20th century with his Casa Cusí, Casa Puig-Soler and Casa Salleras, all located on the Rambla. Explore the town as you follow this route, discovering his work and that of his contemporaries.
