“Meet you by the cubes!” Yes, Barceloneta’s unusual beach sculpture is a reference point for thousands of sun-worshippers every summer. It’s usually the busiest stretch of beach so arrive early to pick the best spot. Chiringuitos, or beach bars, provide everything from refreshments and snacks to gourmet meals.
The wide open beaches of Castelldefels with their soft sand and convenient watersports facilities are popular with Barcelona's local residents who want to get away (but not too far away!) from the city. Cultural activities such as concerts and performances are regularly organised along the seafront promenade. Cercanias train. 20 minutes from Sants.

NOVA ICÀRIA Kids will love any stretch of the giant sandpit that extends from the W Hotel to behind the angular Fòrum building, but this beach is particularly ideal for a day out with the little ones. Bring bats and a ball for the ping-pong table, or join a volleyball game. Deckchairs, ice-cream kiosks and showers are conveniently located.
SITGES The once fishing village of Sitges is just 30 minutes south of Barcelona. This funloving town is characterised by charming whitewashed buildings and its vivacious summer ambience includes seventeen golden beaches. It's worth walking those extra few minutes away from the town to reach the quieter beaches. Cercanias train. 35 minutes from Sants.

PLATJA SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS You could be forgiven for thinking you're no longer in Barcelona when you reach the beach behind the Fòrum. The chiringuitos are actually allowed to have live DJs and music here because yes, this is just outside the official city limits. Party on! El Maresme Fòrum
GARRAF Picturesque and quaint, this area is located between Castelldefels and Sitges and is surrounded by the Garraf Natural Park. Its cute beach huts and rocky surroundings create a special atmosphere. It is especially popular with local families as there aren't any bars on the beach, so remember to bring your own supplies. TOP SUMMER REFRESHMENTS During the hot summer months it’s important to keep cool with plenty of liquid refreshments, and of course there are drinks for every occasion. Here are a few of our favourites, in Catalan and Spanish.
1. SANGRIA
4. CLARA
It might be a touristy cliché, but no trip to Spain is complete without a glass (or pitcher!) of this classic cocktail. This combination of wine, spirits, chopped fruit, soda and ice can be found at nearly every restaurant and bar in the city. Although it is generally made with a red wine base, it can also be served with rosé, white wine or cava.
Whilst Spain is renowned for its wine culture, beer is another drink of choice. For a lighter and more refreshing alternative, ask for a clara, which is one part beer and one part soda water or lemonade. This shandy mix is made with draught beers in any bar, and also available ready-mixed in cans.
2. ORXATA/HORCHATA This unique and deliciously refreshing concoction made from tiger nuts originated in the Valencia region. The sweetness and slightly bitter aftertaste are simply delicious. A recommended place to enjoy this at its best is Orxatería Sirvent, founded in 1920 (Parlament, 56. Sant Antoni.)
3. GRANISSAT/GRANIZADO These icy-cold, semi-frozen “slushies” come in various flavours and go down perfectly under the strong Barcelona sun. Lemon granissat is most classic, although mint or coffee hit the spot for an instant pickme-up. Look out for the granissat stands on the counter of ice-cream parlours or cafés.

5. CAFÈ AMB GEL/CAFÉ CON HIELO To satisfy that caffeine craving while also cooling down, try an iced coffee. This cold brew can be served black or with milk and sugar. Be sure to check out the local cafés to ease yourself into those early mornings.

CADAQUÉS Tiny, hidden bays outline this seaside town in the Costa Brava, in the province of Girona. Its incredible landscape of rocky coast fringed by beautiful beaches and coves makes it a very popular summer destination.
DISCOVER CADAQUÉS
SALVADOR DALÍ'S HOUSE
Cadaqués was a favourite resort of both Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, who were attracted to the incredible scenery of this sleepy town. Spend just a few minutes in this former fishing village and it is not hard to see why it is loved by so many and appreciated by artists of such prestige. The crystal clear waters dance with an incredible light and a sea breeze accompanies the hot sun. It remains a favourite spot for artists and weekenders from Barcelona and nearby towns.
Salvador Dalí was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. He was known and loved for his flamboyant personality as well as for his iconic paintings. The house he lived in, just around the bay at Port Lligat on the Cap de Creus, has been preserved as a museum. Dalí is said to have been drawn by the location's landscape, light and remoteness. He reconstructed its inner spaces during the 40 years he lived there, creating a quirky and unique ambience.
Although its small population makes for a quiet town during most of the year, this number grows dramatically during the summer months. Despite its popularity among tourists, the town has managed to retain its charm and authenticity. There are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can taste the local specialties and enjoy beautiful sea views. Keep an eye out for the artisan craft shops for original and stylish souvenirs.

CAP DE CREUS The Cap de Creus is a nature reserve, marked by the eastern end of the Pyrenees. There are a number of hiking trails both north and south of the peninsula with incredible views across the bay to France. These views of the coast with its tumbling cliffs are sure to leave a lasting memory in your mind.

ACTIVITIES
GETTING TO CADAQUÉS
Several companies rent out boats in Cadaqués for a unique way to explore the bay and beyond. Dusk is especially beautiful here, and we suggest making time to watch the sunset over the bay. The short walks and longer hikes are a real treat. There are many paths that wind along the coast and hilltops, lined with plenty of bars where you can enjoy the views and cool off with a refreshing drink or ice-cream.

DIABLES, OR DEVILS, DANCE THROUGH THE STREETS BRANDISHING FIREWORKS THAT SPIN AROUND A LONG POLE
years have been in Plaça Revolució, Plaça del Sol and Plaça de la Virreina, with acts ranging from Catalan indie rock to Latino ensembles and DJs feeding rumbas, rockabilly and reggae to an up-for-it crowd. Check online for the full line-up and agenda. Traditional events are definitely not to be missed. The unmistakably pagan correfoc- “fire-run” is a highlight, with diables, or devils dancing through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Tribal drumming accompanies the parade as it winds its way through the streets. Look out for the fire-breathing dragons that take part in the action. Gràcia’s own dragon, called “Gaudiamos”, is a large replica of the famous Gaudí dragon statue found in the ornamental staircase of the Park Güell. If you or a friend have a balcony overlooking the correfoc route, start the night there. Human castles reach up to the skies in Plaça Rius i Taulet. A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. AL FRESCO TERRACES Nothing says summer quite like eating out and enjoying an al fresco drink, and Barcelona is full of lovely bars and restaurants where you can make the most of those sunny afternoons and long evenings. Here are three popular spots with plenty of fabulous venues to chose from.
1. Plaça del Sol, Gràcia This funky square surrounded by bars and restaurants has some of the most coveted open air tables in town. Sol Soler prepare delicious homemade tapas including quiches, salads and scrummy desserts. Sol de Nit is a busy cocktail bar with contemporary art exhibited on the walls and excellent patatas bravas. Another arty spot is Joali, and if you’re looking for some late night entertainment Eldorado Disco Club will be spinning the sounds of the summer. There are always plenty of people hanging out in the square and usually a bohemian guitar being strummed at any time of day or night.
2. Passeig del Born, El Born One of the best areas for bars, in a neighbourhood renowned for its lively scene. The Passeig del Born itself is home to classic establishments such as Berimbau, the oldest Brazilian bar in town which serves a mean mojito and capirinha, and El Born Cafeteria. The outdoor tables of the Cactus Bar are ideal for watching trendy revellers go by. Newcomer Casa Nova has an exquisite selection of traditional and creative tapas, and expert bartenders who mix refreshing cocktails and offer suggestions from the excellent wine list. 50

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down C/ Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by the locals.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
