CYCLING IN the city
· · ·
Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.
in the street
· · · 8
Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.
INFO
in your apartment
· · ·
Please keep quiet between 10pm and 8am. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday! Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.
ON THE BEACH
· ·
Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.
RECYCLING Barcelona is an eco-friendly city. Keep an eye out for the coloured recycling bins nearest to your apartment:
·· ·· ·
Yellow: plastic and tetra pack Green: glass Blue: paper Brown: organic Grey: non-recyclable items

MUSIC IN PARK GÜELL
better safe... Be careful with your bags, cameras, phones and any other personal items, especially around La Rambla and on public transport.
Innovative architecture, landscaped gardens, sunsets, spectacular views... what more could you want? Live music? Well, ok then. You can enjoy some great gigs in the open air. Look out for Microguagua, and the talented Spanish guitarists that play in the caves.
graffiti at park tres xemeneies One of the few spots where street artists are allowed to paint, so you can find some larger works here. It's a popular spot for the skater crowd and local residents. For stencil work, check out the back streets of the Raval and Ciutat Vella, especially around Carrer d' Avinyó.
boutique shopping in the born Stylish Born, trendy Born, how cool are your shops? Very. Funky fashion simply oozes from boutiques like Coquette and La Comercial in C/ Rec, or bag emporiums Capricho de Muñeca and Lubochka in C/ Brosolí. Look out for the outlets which are scattered along the back streets of this neighbourhood if you’re on a budget. Another excellent street to check out is C/ dels Flassaders, where you'll find Mercat Princesa.
ski getaways The snow-tipped Pyrenees are less than a two hour drive from Barcelona, so you can easily catch a morning bus, spend the day on the slopes and get back home in the evening. One of the most popular resorts is Masella. Sagalés offer a combo SkiBus package, with return transport and day skipass from 39€. Have a look on www. masella.com for more offers.
vintage on carrer riera baixa A retro theme permeates this entire street, which has record shops, chill-out cafés and a hairdresser that specialises in throwback looks, just off Rambla Raval. Galalith is the best place for jewellery, bags and accessories. Browse deep at Xuxu & Vintage and you‘ll be deeply rewarded. Lullaby is owned by musicians so you'll always catch some great tunes whilst scanning their rails.

Exhibition: T'estimo? A History of Love and Marriage (Until 22nd May) Love and marriage have not always gone hand in hand. This exhibition traces the main changes in marriage and ways to love over time, from the classical era to the present. A tour presents customs and characteristic elements: courtship and seduction, beliefs, customs of the wedding day and the social function of marriage as an institution.
Exhibition: Corner of the Absurd (Permanent Collection) An invention is used to solve a problem; or so we’ve been told. However, everything you see here has been created to provoke a smile, or even a laugh. Common sense is sometimes a little too sensible and this is why, in this crazy world, it is occasionally advantageous to leave good sense at the door. Does that make sense? Discover this and more in one of Barcelona's most original museums.

Day Trip
SITGES This small coastal town is located just 35km away from Barcelona, and in February it becomes the Rio of Catalonia. Its carnival celebrations are colourful, extravagant and well worth experiencing. It's also a fantastic day trip destination, any time of the year.
sitges carnival
the arrival of the king
Be prepared for crowds as over 250,000 revellers take Sitges by storm from the 4th-10th Feb.
According to tradition, "King Carnestoltes" makes an appearance on the first Thursday of the celebrations to welcome everyone to the carnival. He absolves everyone's sins throughout the weekend, and "dies" during the carnival's closing party, which marks the beginning of Lent.
The biggest events are the Debauchery Parade on Sunday 7th and Extermination Parade on Tues 9th. Expect a procession full of extravagant costumes, with colourful feathers, masks and elaborate make-up. Floats pass down the main street, each with their own quirky theme and many with an on-board sound system and party crew. Dancers, acrobats and other performers accompany the floats and provide creatively choreographed and often somewhat daring performances. The Children's Parade is a tamer version which takes place on Sunday at 3pm, and is also well worth catching.

RESTAURANTS & Bars You'll find everything from excellent quality traditional Mediterranean dishes at El Trull (C/ Mossen Felix Clara 3), to burgers and craft beers at Big Al's Burger Bar (C/ Sant Bonaventura 5). Lady Green (Sant Pau 11) is perfect for veggies. As for bars... explore, and you won't be disappointed!

Paella and tapas workshops
Run by locals
Sara is mother of two beautiful little girls, young and friendly. She is laying out the ingredients for lunch when I arrive at her house, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the fabulous Park Güell. What’s on the menu? Paella. Mmmm... The open-plan kitchen is homely and warm and leads out onto a magical garden filled with trees and plants. Having spent the morning amidst the hustle and bustle of Barcelona’s busy streets, I truly feel as though I’ve discovered a secret paradise here. Sara is wearing her apron and is ready to receive her guests – or rather, students, as she will be showing them how to make a recipe that is very typical for her, yet completely new and exotic for them. She will be teaching special tricks and techniques to get this delicious dish just right, before sitting down and enjoying it all together afterwards. Sara and Jordi have been running workshops in their gorgeous home for two years, and they love it. By sharing their passion for cooking with visitors from all over the world it would seem that they too have learned a lot from

Groups are often very international and courses are run in English (though Sara, in addition to Spanish and Catalan, also speaks French). The best bit is that after the workshop you have the skills to make your own

CIRC RALUY Circus
The Raluy circus has been coming to Barcelona for the last 16 years, offering a classic circus experience with a different twist every time. The clowns have red noses and cry huge crocodile tears, the tightrope walkers make you hold your breath, and the acrobats' gravity-defying stunts leave you searching for invisible wires that probably aren't there. Marvel at the "human cannonball", laugh at the self-deprecating humour of the clowns, appreciate the dexterity of the jugglers, and be prepared for some modern circus sketches involving a lazer light show. This new show includes international performers and is fun for all the family. Port Vell, Moll de la Fusta

SANTA EULÀLIA Traditional
Is it fair to wonder whether Barcelona has two patron saints to squeeze yet another holiday into the annual agenda? Back in the 3rd Century AD Eulàlia was brutally murdered and martyred as a young child, for not refuting her religion. Her statue looks down from the top of Barcelona Cathedral onto the square, which hosts an artisan market from the 6th-8th. A myriad of shows, dances and folkloric interventions take place during these festive days. Highlights include the Illuminated human castles at 20:15 in Plaça St Jaume on the 6th. More human castles reach for the skies in the same square on Sunday 8th from 13:00. Also on Sunday, the traditional gegants of Ciutat Vella, large sculptures that tower above the shoulders of their bearers, take a twirl at 10:00 in Plaça Reial. One of the most dramatic events will be the correfoc fire-run route which departs from opposite the Cathedral at 20:15. Immerse yourself in the action! RUMBA CATALANA Rumba Catalana originated in the early 1960s as a fusion of Catalan gypsy flamenco music with Cuban and Columbian rhythms. More upbeat than flamenco, it celebrates life and the struggle for social justice. Look out for Rumba concerts around town, or spend an evening at La Rumbeta, at Passatge Escudellers 7, for a taste of some of Barcelona's most authentic beats.

The Shamrock turns a new leaf One of Barcelona's oldest Irish pubs, The Shamrock has now joined forces with the Guinness Laughter Lounge Comedy Club to host international stand-up comedy shows in Barcelona. The Shamrock Bar in Barcelona is one of those long-standing institutions that definitely deserves another look-in of late. Nestled right in between a bunch of Barcelona's trendy establishments, such as the Flax&Kale restaurant or the Holala Plaza vintage mecca, The Shamrock has stuck to its roots while Barcelona's hipster movement has grown up all around it. Whereas before this square was pretty much ignored, the human traffic nowadays indicates the true strength of its location, below central Universitat metro and the beginning of bustling Tallers street that leads to La Rambla. With all the ensuing fuss, it's comforting to know that The Shamrock still remains as the fifth oldest Irish bar in Barcelona and certainly one of the most authentic, right down to se単or Pedro, the original owner. Himself a singer with his own blues rock band, it's easy to see where the bar gets its inspiration, as guitars and music stars adorn the walls unpretentiously. Pedro explains that this bar, its staff and punters, are Shamrock family, greeting newcomers like old friends in true Irish bar fashion. A bar where everybody knows your name, there is a level of relaxed comfort here gained only through the years. Or perhaps it's a sense of easy confidence, derived from the Guinness Seal of Approval up on the wall. This is like an honour badge for any discerning Irish bar and it's pleasing to
know that the Guinness will always be good here (especially for Barcelona). The Shamrock shows football games as standard, but more interestingly, there is a large barn-sized room at the back; fit for a game of pool, and on occasion jam sessions by Pedro's band and other locals. Coming in January, The Shamrock Bar is joining forces with Guinness Laughter Lounge Barcelona to present the first ever comedy show live in the venue. Fans of the cult Irish TV series Father Ted will be thrilled to see Joe Rooney aka "Father Damo" from the hit show perform a night of hilarious stand-up comedy, on Friday January 8th. In unwavering Shamrock style, there will also be a jam session afterwards and new musicians are very welcome. The bar is so well stocked with music equipment that there's even an organ! With seating for about 100 people and a night that's certain to be the best of Irish craic, mark January 8th as the start of your new year and time to turn over a new leaf with The Shamrock at C/ Tallers 72.
