sizzling art Artists' workshops nestle between the cafés and shops in the back streets of the Born. Pass C/ Abaixadors 10, next to Santa Maria del Mar, and peep into local artist Núria Duran's atelier. The Lomogaphy store at C/ Rosic 3 has a funky display of pop snaps. Buy a camera and give it a whirl yourself.
TOP insider tips!
THE BORN Off the Beaten Tra c k
4 uNIQUE BOUTIQUES As far back as Medieval times this neighbourhood has been a centre for trade and commerce. The cloth merchants are long gone; now you’ll find everything from the fabulous All You Knit Is Love wool shop (C/ Barra de Ferro, 8), to right-on artisan fashion from MTX (C/ Rec, 32) and handmade shoes at Nu Sabates (C/ Cotoners 14) by architect-turnedshoemaker Rafi Balouzian. Very nice.

sightseeing
PLAça sant agusti vell This little-known square at the end of C/ Carders has hardly been touched by time. Elegant wrought-iron lamp posts, an 18th century fountain and tall trees add to this square's unique character. Old restaurants sit next to new establishments; Bar Mundial has been renowned for its seafood and fish since 1925, whilst La Hamaca sells ecological fruit and veggies, and delicious fresh juices and snacks. Step back in time and enjoy the present like never before.
2
3 sculpt your day Perhaps the queues at the Picasso Museum are too painfully long, or perhaps you're after a different art experience. Say hello to the MEAM European Museum of Modern Art (Barra de Ferro, 5). Dedicated to sculpture and contemporary figurative art, you’ll find activities for the kids and a great café in this old merchant's palace. Look out for their regular agenda of concerts.
inspiring art & soul food

C/ Princesa stretches from Via Laietana to the Ciutadella Park, and the best thing on this street is the Blueproject Gallery at number 57, at the park end. It's one of Barcelona’s most interesting contemporary art galleries, with temporary multimedia exhibitions showcasing new talent every month. And don't miss the Blueproject Café next door. Delicious organic menus, raw vegan dishes, mouthwatering desserts, home-made biscuits... mmm!

Focus on:
Casa Lleó Morera Barcelona experienced a cultural Golden Age around the turn of the 20th century. A generation of talented architects and craftsmen rose to the challenge of constructing the new Eixample district. They received enough economic support and artistic freedom to manifest their creative vision through the stonework, tiles and decoration of countless new buildings, and played it well. The legacy of Modernism's star architect, Antoni Gaudí, mastermind of the Sagrada Familia, Casa Milá and five more UNESCO-recognised constructions is just a splash in the pool of a much larger movement. Are you ready to dive in? Another important name in Catalan Modernism is Lluis Domènech i Muntaner. His greatest works in Barcelona are the Palau de la Música Catalana and the restructuring of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. He was also responsible for the Modernist renovation of the Casa Lleó i Morera, at Passeig de Gràcia 35.
14
AN HISTORIC BUILDING In 1902 this house was called the Casa Rocamora and was owned by Francesca Morera i Ortiz. Her family had made their wealth as overseas traders in the Americas. Domènech i Muntaner rebuilt the façade and added structural improvements such as stone balconies and three extra galleries. With the assistance of nearly 40 of the most talented craftspeople of the time, the interior was also redesigned with stained-glass windows, mosaics, ceramics, sculpture, wood, and marble. A recurring detail which you might notice is the mulberry fruit, a symbolic translation of the name “Morera.” Francesca Morera i Ortiz passed away before the works were completed and the house was inherited by her son Albert Lleó i Morera. He was an esteemed member of the Catalan bourgeoisie, who held a Ph.D. in Medicine and worked as laboratory director at the Hospital de la Santa Creu

i Sant Pau. The building was sold in 1943 to the insurance company Sociedad Mercantil Bilbao, and was recently acquired in 2006 by Group Núñez i Navarro.
The block of discord Casa Lleó I Morera is one of three prestigious Modernist buildings on this curiously named stretch of Passeig de Gràcia. The other are Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s Casa Amatller, which each have their own style. The buildings clash and vie for the title of the “most beautiful.” This echoes the Greek legend of Eris, the goddess of discord, who offered a golden apple of discord, la manzana de la discòrdia, to the most beautiful goddess present at the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. The resulting argument is said to have sparked the Trojan War. It is also a play on the Spanish word manzana, meaning both an apple and a street block.
Visiting the Casa Lleó i Morera Since opening to the public last year, thousands of visitors have already enjoyed this fascinating insight into top Modernist craftsmanship and design. Tours are available and recommended, with experienced guides that offer insights such as the subtleties of the design and the historical context of its construction. A regular guided tour lasts 70 minutes (15€), or you can take a 30 minute express tour (12€). Tickets are only available online, or from the Palau de la Virreina (La Rambla, 99). A foodie's paradise
The Magic Fountain
Explore on foot
Surely one of the most colourful and exciting markets in the world, visiting La Boqueria is a must when in Barcelona and of course, there is no entrance fee. However, the many delicious products will probably be too great a temptation to resist.
Just below Montjuïc at Plaça Espanya lies one of Barcelona’s most special attractions, the Magic Fountain. Offering wonderful evening performances, this spectacular light, music and water show is a must for visitors.
For first-timers in the Catalan capital, it can be difficult to get your bearings. Joining a walking tour is a great way to get to know the city and there are many free tours of Barcelona available. There's a range of different itineraries from the Old Town to Modernism routes.

4 Window-shopping
Go Green
Known as Barcelona’s swankiest boulevard, Passeig de Gràcia is one of the best places in the city to take in the buzz of urban life. Check out some of the best Modernist buildings in the city with the likes of La Pedrera and Casa Batlló and window shop in the über-cool designer stores. Selfie outside Prada, darling?
Another of our favourite free things to do in Barcelona is to wander around the Ciutadella Park. This beautiful green space is a great place for a winter picnic and the impressive fountain is lovely. Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf is just a hop and a skip away too and is great for photo ops.
6 Arty vibes
Museums for free
Continue to the top end of Passeig de Gràcia and you’ll find yourself in the leafy neighbourhood of Gràcia. Known for its café culture, arty vibes, and pretty squares, this where the urban hipsters and armchair revolutionaries hang out.
Many of Barcelona's museums and art galleries offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. These include the MUHBA Barcelona History Museum, Catalonia History Museum and the Picasso Museum. Others are free every Sunday afternoon from 3pm. Get in!

Santa María del Mar Basilica, located in the beautiful neighbourhood of El Born, is one of Barcelona’s most important historical landmarks. As wonderfully told by Ildefonso Falconés in his novel ‘The Cathedral of the Sea’, the story behind this aweinspiring building is incredible.

Barcelona's disused metro stations
Stars in your eyes
Three stations have been closed, and another three were never opened. Keep your eyes peeled as you might catch a glimpse of them when you're on the metro.
A visit to the Planetarium always hits the spot when you're after some cosmic perspective, but the Fabra Observatory above Tibidabo offers the real thing. Guided tours of the observatory and a look at the night sky through the enormous telescopes are offered every Friday and Saturday. www.fabra.cat
The most famous disused station is Correos, at the bottom of Via Laietana. This was closed in 1972 to make way for the L4 extention.

Tea Bars January and February tend to be the coldest months in Barcelona, so we’ve scoped out some of the cosiest spots where you can enjoy a tasty brew.
1. Caj Chai Many people stumble upon this exquisite little tea house in the back streets of the Gothic district, and can't find it ever again. Lord, I know I'm one. But once you've nailed it you'll keep coming back. Their extensive tea list includes a scrummy house speciality chai and a good selection of international teas. Herbal infusions include refreshing mint tea and ayurvedic "Women’s Tea" with a delicious mix of herbs and fruit. You can also buy loose leaves to enjoy at home. Sant Domènec del Call, 12
2. La Teteria This remarkable space is a temple of Chinese tea culture. It was established in 2005 by a Catalan and Chinese couple who take pride in the ceremonial aspects of any experience in their establishment. The list of teas reveals a selection you probably didn’t know existed; white, red, green and black teas, with different quantities of caffeine, grown at all altitudes across the plateaus and plains of China. Tea ceremonies are organised for private groups and on special occasions, such as Chinese New Year on the 19th February. C/ Saragossa, 113

3. Refresca Tea Barcelona’s first ice tea bar kept us feeling refreshed throughout the hot summer months with their delicious iced green tea and fresh fruit concoctions. We now go out of our way to pass by their two shops in order to wrap our chilly mitts around one of their delicious mugs of chai latte, Fair Trade organic hot chocolate and white chocolate drinks. Keep an eye out for special promotions, and if you’re feeling indulgent treat yourself to a pastry as well. C/ Carders 25 and C/ Escudellers 56.
4. Infussion One of Barcelona’s best kept secrets, this is located in the heart of the old district of Les Corts. The fusion of Mediterranean and Oriental influences is immediately apparent from the moment you step into this exquisitely decorated spot. Chinese tea, fresh tropical fruit juices and Italian coffee is served alongside Arabic pastries, Mediterranean salads and Argentinean savoury treats. They also have a good selection of flavoured shisha tobacco which you can burn in one of the comfortable corners. C/ Deu i Mata 10.
5. Alsur Cafe It’s easy enough to spend the whole day in one of the two Alsur Cafés. Turn up at a reasonable hour in the morning, work away on your laptop, read a book or catch up with some friends and you might realise that it’s already dark by the time you leave. In the meantime you can enjoy their delicious teas, served in beautiful porcelain mugs, and possibly one of their savoury pastries or irresistible homemade cakes. Day Trip
sitges
This small coastal town is located just 35km away from Barcelona, and in February it becomes the Rio of Catalunya. Its carnival celebrations are colourful, extravagant and well worth experiencing. It's also a top day trip destination, any time of the year.
sitges carnival
the arrival of the king
Be prepared for crowds as over 250,000 revellers will be taking Sitges by storm from Tuesday 10th until Wednesday 18th February.
According to tradition, "King Carnestoltes" makes an appearance on the first Thursday of the celebrations to welcome everyone to the carnival. He absolves everyone's sins throughout the weekend, and "dies" during the carnival's closing party, which marks the beginning of Lent.
The biggest event will be the Parade of Debauchery on Sunday 15th February. A procession full of extravagant and colourful costumes with feathers, masks and elaborate make-up owns the streets. Themed floats pump out fat tunes through their on board sound system and the party crew give it all they've got; suck it up, darling. Dancers, acrobats and other performers are hot on their heels with creatively choreographed and often daring performances. If you're ever going to fall in love with a tranny, do it here. The Children's Parade is a tamer version on the same day at 3pm

Local Specialties
Catalan cuisine is as varied as the land itself, which includes high mountains, seaside towns and rolling countryside. Each area has its own special dishes that combine local ingredients with typical Mediterranean flavours. Here are a few popular favourites to look out for and enjoy during your stay.
Enjoy an open-air barbecue
Calรงots These seasonal shallots hit the menus hard in January and February. They are traditionally grilled on an open fire and served in bundles of newspaper to keep them warm. Calรงots are accompanied by a romesco sauce, made with tomato, red pepper, pine nuts and almonds. Try them at: El Mussol, Avenida Diagonal, 488
Escudella This traditional Catalan stew can be prepared with different ingredients. It often includes large meatballs and seasonal vegetables. Another variation uses this broth and mixes it with rice or vegetables.
Typical winter dish 34

Escalivada Fresh escalivada melts in the mouth, you have to taste it to believe it. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, egg plant and onions, which are mixed with extra virgin olive oil and garlic, and left to marinade and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies.
Also delicious in sandwiches
Escalivada is served cold, and is often accompanied by crispy pa amb tomaquet. This rustic bread soaks up the oil and make a delicious snack. It is also served alongside butifarra sausages or other grilled meats, or as a topping for coca savoury pastries. Try this at: Cal Boter, C/ de Tordera 62
Crispy caramel and soft custard

Crema Catalana Dessert custards or natillas are a popular way to finish a meal on a sweet note, and this is the king of them all. It is traditionally served in single portion ceramic dishes, with a crispy layer of caramellised sugar on top which you crack with your spoon. Delicious.
