A visit to the Casa de les Punxes reveals a unique structure built in a Medieval castle style reminiscent of Northern Europe, with its dreamy turrets and a fairytale demeanour. It resonates with the late 19th and early 20th century Modernist reality of an emerging bourgeoisie on the leading edge of industrialisation. The house was originally designed for three sisters, who each had their own independent apartment. It was opened to the public for the first time in summer 2016.

CATALAN ARCHITECTURE The beautiful Monestir Romànic de Sant Miquel is an example of Romanesque Catalan architecture and is made up of a combination of elements from different monasteries around Catalonia. If Girona is your favourite destination, then look no further than the buildings inspired by the town of Besalú. One of these is a cute nude-pink hued house with pastel blue shutter doors and balconies covered in colourful flowers – like something out of a fairytale!
ANDALUSIAN REGION In the central area of Poble Espanyol, there is a space dedicated to the Andalusian region, which offers a delightful architectural contrast to the rest of the village. Characterised by its winding, cobbled streets, white façades and blue flower pots, this area replicates provinces such as Córdoba, Seville, Cádiz and Jáen.

GREEN OASES FOR A FAMILY DAY OUT CIUTADELLA PARK Barcelona’s central green space proudly boasts everything from fountains and museums to a zoo! It’s a perfect place for a peaceful stroll or to enjoy the creative ambience of people practicing everything from circus skills and tightrope walking, to guitars and bongo drums. The most impressive feature is the Cascade Fountain, which is a grandiose Baroque style monument that suggests Gaudí’s flamboyant hand in its creation. There is a large boating lake full of ducks. It’s a great spot for a picnic, which you can pick up from the nearby Santa Caterina food market. Passeig de Picasso, 21
COLLSEROLA NATURAL PARK This natural park frames the back of Barcelona and covers 11,000 hectares. There are countless routes for hiking and mountain biking. One of the most popular panoramic trails is La Carretera de las Aguas, which can easily be accessed from the Funicular de Vallvidrera. Situated just over the first ridge of mountains surrounding Barcelona, you can get a view of some of the huge villas where the elite of Barcelona live. One of the main attractions in the park is the Villa Joana that houses the Verdaguer Museum. www.parccollserola.net
CASTELL DE L’ORENETA PARK This can best be described as a family park, perfect for a picnics and full of activities for the little ones. It is located on the slope of a hill in Sarrià with breathtaking views of the sea. There is a pony ranch with instructors who help kids to learn the basics of riding. Right at the top of the hill, past the playground with the swings and seesaws, you’ll come to a railway crossing. A miniature steam engine operates on these tracks, with overjoyed kids screaming and shouting as they venture into the wilderness hidden beyond the trees and bushes. Camí de Can Caralleu

VALL DE NÚRIA PYRENEES
Vall de Núria is a high mountain valley located at 2000m, in the eastern area of the Pyrenees. Crowned by majestic mountain peaks that reach over 3000m, it is an idyllic location for outdoor activities and an ideal starting point for longer hikes into the mountains. ACTIVITIES FOR ALL THE FAMILY As the summer sunshine climbs in the sky, the resort area of Vall de Núria transforms from a ski haven to a hub of summer activities. It’s an ideal place to come with kids, as there is a huge variety of outdoor fun on offer. A play-park entertains the younger ones, and there is also a mini-golf area, and boating and canoes on the lake. There is a pony ride route especially designed for 2-8 year olds, which goes around the Sanctuary buildings. The farm area invites kids to encounter animals such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and Catalan donkeys. Horse riding is a good way to discover the landscapes of the valley, and routes are available for all levels. There is also an archery range inside the woods where you can test your focus and aim against silhouettes concealed among the trees. 34

A HISTORIC SANCTUARY The earliest records of Vall de Núria Sanctuary date back to Saint Giles in 700AD. Giles was a pilgrim who carved an icon of the Virgin Mary, which he hid when he fled Roman persecution. The first chapel was built here in 1072, and a shelter for shepherds was added in 1162. It has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, most recently in 1911. HIKING ROUTES There are some spectacular trails to be enjoyed here. Mountain paths wind through the woods and beyond the treeline towards the high and rocky mountain peaks. Popular routes include Pic de l’Àliga (2476m, 1hr15), Pic de la Fossa del Gegant (2801m, 3hrs) and Coma de Vaca (2.020m, 1hr15). Download a map from valldenuria.cat.

WHAT'S ON
THIS INTRIGUING GRAND OPERA IN FOUR ACTS FEATURES THE MUSIC OF DONIZETTI
Meanwhile, the King wants to divorce his Queen and marry Léonor, but the Church refuses to sanction a divorce. An official intercepts a love letter to Léonor, who confesses to loving another man. Balthazar intervenes, backed by the Pope, demanding that the King ends his adulterous relationship or faces excommunication. Fernand returns triumphantly from the war and is met at the court of the King. The next twist in the plot occurs when the King wants to reward him for his triumphs in battle by granting him any wish. Fernand asks for the hand in marriage of the lady who inspires his courage, and as he points to Léonor the missing pieces of the love triangle fall into place. The King is at first distraught to discover the identity of his love rival, and then swiftly declares that they must marry immediately. After the wedding celebration, Balthazar tells
Donizetti Fernand that he has just married the King’s favourite consort. Fernand is distraught and returns to the monastery to seek refuge there. He remembers his beautiful Léonor and the aria she sang, “Ange si pur”, which is an adaptation by Donizetti from his unfinished opera Le Duc d’Albe. Leonor is still very much in love with Fernand and disguises herself as a novice monk, to enter the monastery and approach him to beg his forgiveness. They embrace passionately and declare their love for each other. However, it is already too late as Léonor dies of exhaustion in Fernand’s arms. SALA MONTJUÏC: OPEN-AIR CINEMA Summer has arrived in Barcelona! Jackets can stay home, sandals replace boots, and our imaginations are allowed to wander freely whilst planning travel and outdoor entertainment for the next few months. July in Barcelona's calendar is synonymous with Sala Montjuïc open-air film screenings, which nearly always sell out.The season runs from the 29th June- 3rd August.
(11th) presents an intimate portrait of intense yet fleeting summer love. Los Carosones kick off the evening with a Mediterranean frenzy of swing and Italian mambo. If you haven't yet seen Guy Ritchie's gangster flick Snatch (23rd) be sure to catch it here. salamontjuic.org
Picture the scene… a giant projector screens large images onto the wall of Montjuïc Castle, the soft summer air gently fills with music and hundreds of people make themselves comfortable on deckchairs and blankets, with tremendous picnics and bottles of beer and wine to be shared. What better way to enjoy some of the best films ever made?! Every screening begins with live music, thematically connected with the main feature film. This year’s variety of films takes us through cinema history from top to bottom. Highlights include West Side Story (6th), a contemporary take on Romeo and Juliet set in New York in the 50s. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down Carrer Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
