Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

HIBERNIAN BOOKS

FIDEUA
Barcelona's second hand English bookshop is a treasure trove of pre-loved books. They have a great selection of novels, non-fiction and kids books, as well as new work by local writers. Carrer Montseny, 17, Gràcia.
The frames and equipment for working out on the seafront are always well frequented by mostly guys who dedicate good hours to keeping fit. It's also somewhat of a magnet for the guys and girls who hang out and appreciate their efforts.
Have you tried the Catalan variation of paella yet? Fideua is made with noodles instead of rice, packed with the same fishy, meaty and veggie ingredients, and accompanied by alioli, a delicious garlic mayonnaise.
SUNSET ROOF TERRACES The rooftop terraces of Barcelona's most elegant and modern hotels are open to the public. Take the lift to the top floor and enjoy a swanky cocktail with a view, DJ sessions and live music as you dip your toes into the pool. Some of our favourites include the 360º terrace at Barceló Raval (Rambla Raval, 17), the urban garden of Hotel Pulitzer (Bergara, 8) and the party vibe at Hotel Arts (Marina, 19) - photo.
STREET CANS You're probably already aware that the beer sellers who offer cans on the street are operating illegally, and both seller and buyer can be fined if stopped by the police. What you might not know is that they often store their stash down the manholes that connect with the sewers and are frequented by rats, so give them a good wipe.
PARK LIFE AT CIUTADELLA Pack a picnic and head down to the liveliest grassy spot in town, Ciutadella Park. The animal zoo is next door, and this is a human zoo where all kinds of talents come out to play. You'll find musicians busking, bongo-players busting out their funky rhythms, people practicing juggling, tight-rope walking, poi, acroyoga, all kinds of martial arts and goodness knows what else.

A GREEN DAY IN BARCELONA Visiting one of Europe’s most environmentally friendly cities, but don’t know where to start enjoying the green-minded lifestyle? We’ve got some suggestions for a day in Barcelona where you can relax and have fun, whilst minimising your environmental repercussions.
TAKE A TOUR There are several eco-friendly tours available to show you around all the famous and notso-famous sights of Barcelona, on foot, by bike or Segway. Runner Bean (Carme, 44), organise an Old City Tour, a walking tour that winds through the enchanting streets of the Gothic Quarter. Tours begin every day at 11:00 and 16:30, meeting in Plaça Reial. You decide the price at the end of the tour. If you prefer to get around by bike, Green Bikes (Escudellers, 48), have several routes for biking enthusiasts, including a general city tour that goes to the most popular tourist attractions for 25€. They also offer a Gaudí and Modernism tour that includes the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and the Palau Güell which is just off La Rambla, also for 25€. While Segways may seem a bit ridiculous at first, these zero carbon emission vehicles

can be fairly quick as well as fun. Barcelona Segway Tours (Passeig Lluis Companys, 10), offers a visit to the Gothic Quarter as well as the beaches of Barceloneta and Port Olympic. There’s also the option of a 3-hour gastronomic tour of the flavours of Barcelona. While it may not look like the “coolest” option, you may be pleasantly surprised by these rides.
"BARCELONA IS COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING ITS GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE" PARKS AND GARDENS Barcelona has a surprising amount of green spaces for such a densely populated city. Montjuïc is full of parks, gardens and nature trails, and is known as the city’s “lungs”. It can easily be reached on foot or by public transport from Plaça Espanya, or via the high-line cablecar from the port. Jewel in the crown is the Botanical Garden, which has an extensive collection of Mediterranean plants from various continents. Ciutadella Park is just behind Barceloneta,

although it’s most impressive approach is walking from the mighty Arc de Triomf, down Passeig Lluís Companys. It has a boating lake with ducks, children’s playgrounds and plenty of shaded lawn for chilling out or sharing a picnic with friends. Admire Miró’s colourful “Dona i Ocell” sculpture in the Joan Miró Park, next to Tarragona metro in the Eixample, and relax under palm oases, pine trees and pergolas. There’s a large square, children’s play area, and ping-pong tables. Enormous ceramic sculptures by Beverly Peppers undulate like giant blue waves and contrast beautifully with the lush green grass in Parc del Nord, next to the Estacion del Nord bus station.
however, Barcelona also offers a wide and increasing variety of vegan and vegetarian cuisine. One of our favourites is Amaltea (Diputació, 162), a well-established vegetarian restaurant, which been a foody favourite for decades due to its creativity and reasonable price. It has midday menus from 11,10€ and weekend/evening set menus at just 15,80€.

However, this drink is still riding its well-deserved comeback and the city is enjoying a vermouth renaissance which everyone seems eager to join in with. Served on the rocks, with or without a splash of soda water, and garnished with a slice of orange, vermouth looks the part. It is usually served with a salty tapa of anchovies, sardines or olives, making it the perfect mid-afternoon treat.

Steeped in history, Bar del Pi is the perfect bar to experience the real Barcelona. If you are lost in the Gothic quarter… head to Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol and you will find yourself in a beautiful square looking onto the Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi, just across from La Rambla. Adjacent to the church is Bar del Pi, famed for the foundation of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia at the beginning of the Civil War in 1936, but also where parties from both sides of the political spectrum would meet and try to resolve issues during this time. The bar’s ambience is a natural mixture of bohemian Barcelona and Paris chic, and the design is based on a salon with a mezzanine floor and an outside terrace for sipping a cava or two and watching the world go by. The menu is simple but tasty, with a selection of freshly prepared traditional, city-style tapas, hams, sausages, sandwiches and other picapica favourites. No music (apart from the buskers outside), and no Sports TV… just brilliantly retained authenticity. It has Wifi though! Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, 1

OFF
WEEK I usually ask a Barcelona-based DJ to submit their picks, so it’s the first time in 6 years that I have selected the best fringe events orbiting the official Sónar festival. It’s a bit of minefield actually, as Sónar doesn’t recognise these events at all, and even more complicated by the fact that Sónar is in July this year, not June. Nontheless, June’s Off-Week promoters are pressing on with around 100 key events taking place from the 12th-16th June.
The Life & Death Party at Vila Habana Vila Habana is gorgeous and located on the outskirts of the city, but fairly accessible by public transport with connections to the actual site provided by the promoters. The two day event is hosted by DJ Tennis and features guest artists and DJs like Axel Boman, Chloé, Gilles Peterson, Mano Le Tough and Mind Against playing in the gardens of this Colonial, Neoclassical estate up in the hills overlooking the city. More info at facebook.com/tennisdj
La Macarena The world’s favourite micro-club! The music programme is generally looked after in-house, and for Off-Week in June, it looks like this is still the case with a great selection of local heroes and some specially invited guests. 10th June is Memento XS with Idriss D and the Analogue Cops. 12th June is the Closeknit Posse and 16 June is Argy & Co with a special

GOTHIC & RAVAL Barcelona's Old Town The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri.

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down Carrer Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.
