1 picasso's designs Thousands of visitors gather daily in the square by Barcelona Cathedral, looking up at its Gothic spires. If you turn around, you’ll notice this building on the corner. The exterior wall of the Collegi D’Arquitects de Barcelona (Architectural Society) has large friezes based on drawings by Picasso. There’s also a magnificent library of architecture books inside.
TOP insider tips!
THE GOTHIC QUARTER Off the Beaten Track
2 jewish history The Medieval quarter of El Call (meaning “narrow street”) was home to the city’s Jewish community in the 14th century and had everything they needed for life according to the Jewish traditions. You can visit one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, admire the old street lamps and explore its antique shops, cosy tea rooms and tavern-like bars with bare stone wall interiors.

3 castles in the sky This stainless steel modern art sculpture in Plaça de Sant Miquel reaches 12m high, and pays homage to the Catalan tradition of human castles. A breathtaking triumph of strength, agility and teamwork is expressed as casteller groups build towers of up to 8 storeys high during local festivals throughout Catalonia.
4 5 generations of candlemakers It's one of the oldest shops in Barcelona; Cerabella was founded in 1862 and has sold candles in its current location at C/ Sant Antoni Abat, 9 since 1865. Five generations of candlemakers have developed their artisan techniques through the years. You’ll find colourful contemporary candles in this fascinating building near the Cathedral.

Holala Barcelona
Contemporary culture is a melting pot of lifestyles, each expressed through its own characteristic fashion, music and activities. As any fan will tell you, vintage is more than dressing up in second hand clothes. Vintage is a celebration of timeless quality, a return to a style that predates mass produced high street fashion, and ecologically sound choices, all usually accompanied by a funky soundtrack. Retro City was one of the first vintage clothing shops to open in Barcelona, twelve years ago. After a brief stint in Gràcia they moved to the Raval. Owner Paul Morot first came to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound festival, took one glance at what people were wearing, dug the vibe and decided to stay. “The vintage scene has become so much bigger now, and a lot more commercialized,” he shares. More at home in the currents of the underground, he’s now moving his vintage stock to Lisbon to set up shop there and promote the Reverence Valada music festival. So what’s happening in Barcelona?!

US BARCELONA urban street art festival Barcelona is a vibrant city, constantly renewing and reinventing itself, and nowhere can this be felt more tangibly than the Poblenou neighbourhood. After a successful inauguration last year in Encants, the BARCELONA ÚS festival is back and dedicated as ever to creating a spotlight on the more degraded and forgotten parts of town that are coming up on a wave of urban renewal. Born from an impulse to reclaim these spaces and provoke fresh dialogue, it is an open invitation to everyone to participate in the many experiences that will blossom on the 9th May, including visual urban art, installations, live music and DJs, conferences, workshops and an art market along C/ Père IV. www.usbarcelona.com

Celebrating
15 Years of d n Primavera Sou It’s the first music festival to kick off the season, and one of the most important urban music festivals in the world. Just one glance at the line-up confirms that its promoters are clearly passionate about music. Big name headliners top the bill, but where Primavera Sound has really managed to stand out is by consistently bringing together talented up-and-coming bands and artists who remain outside the mainstream.
Free concert at the Fòrum
Primavera Sound Festival
Pre-parties, after parties and extra parties… Barcelona’s most restless live music venue is always at the centre of the Primavera Sound action. Mon 25th catch Ice Age (DK), on Tues 26th Barcelona space-rock by Boreals and Cuban sisters Ibeyi. There’s a big line-up on Sun 31st too, with Dave P (US), Catalan punksters The Saurs, and plenty more.
The main festival takes place at the Fòrum. Large stages are spread across this open space, with the Mediterranean Sea as a stunning backdrop. Thursday night headliners are American rock duo The Black Keys, Antony and the Johnsons, Spiritualized, and techno’s Richie Hawtin. On Friday you can rock out to indie rock with Ride and Alt-J, punk rock legend Patti Smith, indie-pop with Belle & Sebastian, and Damien Rice. On Saturday’s big names are The Strokes, Interpol, Underworld and Tori Amos. With over 100 bands and DJs on the bill, this is just a small taste of what looks set to be a huge experience! Day tickets cost 80€, and full accreditation is 195€.
26
On Weds 27th the festival kicks off with a mighty free show in the main venue. Get your dancing shoes ready for electro-pop by OMD, a solo show by Albert Hammond Jr from The Strokes, Panama’s eclectic electro-pop, local indie rockers Las Ruinas and more.
Sala Apolo
Ciutadella Park The open-air fun continues at the Ciutadella Park during the weekend. Head down to the largest green space in Barcelona’s old town and you’ll find a stage that’s ready to rock you on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. www.primaverasound.es

writing, symbols words Art Exhibition
The first exhibition by this recently established new museum explores how writing developed originally as an instrument for conserving and spreading the word, and has now become a symbolic reference of the culture to which it belongs, evoking clues to our collective identity. After all, what would our contemporary societies be like without writing? What is it that creates a complete writing graphology? To what extent do we identify ourselves with our writing? The exhibition presents an extensive route through the cultures of the world by engaging with questions surrounding this basic tool of communication. Museum of World Cultures.
