DAY TRIP

TARRAGONA Just an hour away from Barcelona, lively Tarragona is the "Rome of Spain." The modern town has evolved around a nucleus of ruins from the ancient Roman civillisation; you'll see plenty of contrast between its old columns and new commercial buildings. There is so much to visit and enjoy here!

ROMAN HERITAGE

FAMILY WEEK 18-24 MARCH

T

If you're planning a day trip with all the family, make it to Tarragona during this week! There's a packed calendar of special events, street performances and workshops that will keep the little ones entertained, whilst mum and dad will appreciate the free entry to many sights and great meal deals in family friendly restaurants.

arragona is perhaps best known for its previous incarnation as Tarraco, the Roman capital of the Iberian Peninsula. Many of its historic remains are exceptionally well preserved, which earned the city the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city was first captured by the Romans in 218 BC. They built an infrastructure with everything from an amphitheatre and aqueduct, to a forum with spaces for business and temples for worship, roads, and of course, strongly fortified city walls to protect its perimeter. The walls themselves are considered to be the oldest remaining Roman structure outside Italy, and you can walk along some of these remains and catch some great views through the slits in the stone which were originally made for firing arrows. 20

SHOPPING ON LA RAMBLA NOVA This elegant avenue is the top retail hotspot of the city. You'll find high street brands and luxurious cafĂŠs on this main Rambla, and smaller boutiques with fashion and crafts from local artisans along its side streets.

TURÓ DE LA ROVIRA T

ucked away in the secluded district of Carmel, you’ll find one of Barcelona's most spectacular hidden gems, the Turó de la Rovira. Standing at 262 metres above sea level, this spot undoubtedly provides the most incredible panoramic views of the city. You can enjoy perfect vistas of some of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks including the Sagrada Família, Tibidabo and the Torre Agbar. Aside from the views, this location is known for its cluster of war bunkers, cannon platforms and look-out points; timeless relics from the Spanish Civil War. Although not quite as shrouded in mystery as they were a few years ago, the bunkers are still relatively unknown to most visitors, thanks to their remoteness and omission from most tourist guides, which provides a welcome break from the swarms of sightseers found at nearby Park Güell. The bunkers were originally used as antiaircraft batteries during the Spanish Civil War and were part of Barcelona’s active defence, constructed in response to the city’s first bombings. After the war, and in response to the housing shortages at the time, the area was 24

FEATURES colonised by several local families. The shanty district of huts and shacks of the “Barrio de los Cañones”, as it became known, remained in place until the early ‘90s. Since then, the whole area has been renovated and reclaimed as a historical site by MUHBA (Barcelona History Museum), offering visitors a living, breathing piece of history.

This area was a shanty town, where 7% of Barcelona’s population lived in fragile housing until the end of the 1950s.

ST PATRICK’S CRAIC? ST PATRICK’S CRAIC? St Patrick's Day is on the 17th of March, but

plenty the agenda St Patrick's Day is on there's the 17th ofon March, but around this date! there's plenty on the agenda around this date!

IRISH COMEDY As the saying goes “When Irish eyes are smiling, you’ll be smiling too”. Get down to The Shamrock bar on Friday 11th March for a bit of a pre-paddy’s warm-up with some Irish stand-up comedy. Savage Eye star John Colleary from Sligo is performing in this cosy venue, with a jam session afterwards. More info: Guirinesscomedy.com.

IRISH RUGBY As luck of the Irish would have it, there are two big Six Nations Cup games falling on both Saturdays before and after Saint Patrick's day: Ireland/Italy on 12th March, and Ireland/Scotland on the 19th March. Watch the matches on big screens at your favourite Irish bars.

A GOOD PINT OF GUINNESS Celebrating Saint Patrick’s day in true Irish style is not complete without a good pint of Guinness; or several for that matter. The best Irish bars will be packed to the brim on Saint Patrick’s day, so if you want authenticity with your pint, head over to Flaherty's and Shenanigans (see p 41), The Shamrock, Dunne's or The Michael Collins, for guaranteed top-notch craic and some Irish traditional music sessions.

ST PATRICK'S AT FLAHERTY'S IRISH BAR Feel the real Irish experience to the fullest, St. Patrick’s is one of the most important days of the year for Flaherty's, and boy do they know how to celebrate! Amusing official t-shirts, lots of fun prizes to be won and of course it wouldn’t be Paddy’s Day without free hats, would it? Their official St. Patrick’s t-shirts will have you in tears of laughter. Face painting is an absolute must, get a clover, the Irish flag or go all out and nuts and go green! Irish jigs and mouth-watering homemade Irish stew... what more could you want? LST : POETRY IN DARKNESS This is an extremely well produced concept. The Nightlife team was invited to the opening and quite literally the performance blew us away. Since 2007, Live Soundtracks is an organisation that has bean steadily earned critical acclaim and is now beginning to conquer new countries, with successful events at major festivals such as roBOt in Bologna, Italy, as well as building on its roots here in Barcelona. LST’s philosophy is clear: each performance takes the “aesthestic of on-screen cinema”, editing images and nonmusical sounds, with hypnotic electronic sounds heralding a pioneering all-sensory reality through performance. It is the next logical step in electronic music’s journey, allowing musicians or film producers to experiment and programme music to words and pictures, or vice versa. The next show is on March 15 with Lebanese producer Rabih Beaini, while on April 19th, LST hosts Kyoka from Japan, at Sala Hiroshima (C/ Vila i Vilà 67). www.livesoundtracks.net/en

editerranean sunlight spills through large glass windows onto silver-flecked tables framed by a purple velvet curtain and an elegant bookshelf. High tables for on-the-go lunches for two face a marble-topped bar. Premium brand liquors whisper anticipation of evening cocktails. A cosy round table is surrounded by three wicker chairs, for a relaxed evening meal. Comfort, elegance and style permeate each corner with an easy grace.

MEDITERRANEAN FUSION

Good taste is also very much on the menu. Fresh locally sourced market ingredients are creatively combined in this delicious Mediterranean cuisine with touches of international fusion. Three lunch menu formats give clients a choice of dishes. However, with dishes such as broccoli and potato timbale with ham and bacon, and tagliatelle with vegetables and beansprouts, it’s easy to give into the temptation of the full menu. Evening meals are a special occasion at Malgam. Their extensive selection of half-portion dishes, or “platillos”, reflect the Malgam concept of sharing not just good company but also the food. Tapas with a twist include a Russian salad made with Japanese “yuzu” mayonnaise and a touch of lime, guacamole with langostine ceviche, and home-made nachos.

Located in the stylish Eixample district, Malgam is one of the restaurants that sets the standard around here.

An original dish of Galician squid plays on texture, accompanied by crystallised potato and foam of sweet pepper. Meats are grilled on volcanic rock and accompanied by home-made chips, sauces, and grilled vegetables. This is a popular venue for groups, and different sized spaces can accommodate parties of up to 12 and 30 people, or even 50 people, for all kinds of occasions. From 23:30 the restaurant takes on a lounge atmosphere, with great cocktails and often a DJ until 3:00. Evenings get busy, especially weekends, so make sure you call to reserve. Address: C/ Aribau 113. Tel: 93 452 3673 www.malgam.es/ info@malgam.es
