2. BORN This beautiful cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the most best shops are in C/ Rec, C/ dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

Just below Plaça Catalunya you'll find this pedestrian street which is brimming with top high street stores such as El Corte Inglés, Zara and Cortefiel. You'll also find several shoe shops and sparkles from Swarovski. It's a short stroll from here to the Cathedral, and you'll find plenty of boutiques and quirky stores in the streets of the Gothic quarter.

GRÀCIA
Whilst visiting bustling Barcelona, why not take a day to enjoy the quieter side which the city has to offer? Over the years, the Gràcia neighbourhood has established itself as one of the most cosmopolitan and hip areas of Barcelona. Not having the burden of major tourist attractions means Gràcia has developed its own identity. Instead of being full of international brands and fast food chains, Gràcia is home to more independent shops and authentic restaurants. It has a unique and distinctive feel thanks to its narrow streets structured around a series of beautiful squares and Mediterranean style of low-rise architecture.

1. Parks and gardens Montjuïc is covered in parks and gardens, some of which are free to explore and all containing a wide variety of plants and natural features. The Montjuïc Cactus Garden has hundreds of cactus specimens, whilst the Botanical Garden showcases Mediterranean plants and flowers with a backdrop of spectacular views over the city. Its many smaller parks such as the Jardins de Laribal and Jardins de Joan Brossa are ideal for an afternoon stroll, and there are several play areas for children.

2. Sports Montjuïc was a focal location for Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Games, and the many installations created for the occasion remain as part of the city’s world class sports infrastructure. The Bernat Picornell Olympic swimming pool has large indoor and outdoor pools and a spectacular open-air diving pool. Palau Sant Jordi is an important venue for indoor games and athletics. The Olympic Ring and Stadium are now part of the Open Camp sports experience, with virtual reality and “real” reality interactive challenges and games.

3. Museums & Art Galleries Iconic and imposing, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya presides over Plaça Espanya. It contains a vast collection of Catalan art, including an important Romanesque collection. The nearby CaixaForum is one of the city’s most important cultural centres. A carefully curated program of art exhibitions, concerts and conferences takes place all year round. Fundació Joan Miró contains the world’s largest collection of the artisit's works, and temporary exhibitions are dedicated to the contemporary avant garde that resonates with his trajectory. The Olympic Museum offers a unique opportunity to relive the Olympic Games hosted by Barcelona in 1992, and to explore its extensive insights into all the most popular sports.
4. Historic Montjuïc Castle is situated 170m above sea level, giving it some amazing views of the city. The castle was built in 1640 and has overlooked centuries of change in the city. This remains one of main attractions and highest points on the mountainside. It played a significant role in the Spanish Civil War. Montjuïc Cemetery can also be visited and is the final resting place of many prestigious and influential Catalans. Evening tours take visitors on a journey into the past.
5. Sightseeing One of Barcelona’s top free attractions, the Magic Fountains, is located at the foot of Montjuïc. The fountains dance to a soundtrack of rock, pop and classical music, illuminated by an impressive light show. Poble Espanyol gives a feel for Spanish architecture, and this model village also includes several restaurants, entertainment and nightlife venues. And of course, no visit to Montjuïc would be complete without a ride up to the summit in the cablecar.

CASA DE LES PUNXES One of the most emblematic Modernist buildings in the Eixample district, this opened to the public for the first time last year. The building was commissioned by Bartomeu Terradas, one of the first footballers in the history of FC Barcelona. Three separate entrances led to apartments for each of his sisters. Distinctive towers resemble a Medieval castle and elegant terraces offer panoramic views of the city centre. Casa de les Punxes was built in 1905 by the illustrious architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who also designed the Casa Martí, famous for its restaurant Els Quatre Gats where Picasso and his contemporaries would meet. PAINTING, DRINKS AND FUN
Arte Bar is a newly opened venue (the first of its kind in Barcelona) which aims to bring together the grown-up past time of wine, and a forgotten pleasure from our childhood: painting. Sessions last two and a half hours, and participants can expect to spend their evening painting, sampling local wines, socialising with other attendees, and by the end of the session go home with a freshly painted canvas. The perk? No experience required: wine or art-wise.
AT ARTE BAR
The owners of Arte Bar, Alisa Rosseter and Bruce Anderson leave no doubt as to whether you are in experienced hands. Having run an art school in LA as well as fine art summer camps in various locations, (California, Toulouse, and then Girona) since 1999, Alisa and Bruce know what works. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the class environment is friendly, allowing participants to wind down and enjoy the process. When booking a session, all you need to do is select a date that will tackle a painting that you like the look of. The pace of the class is slow and steady. This goes hand in hand with the ethos of Arte Bar and their wish to make this a perfect meeting point for tourists and locals alike, who want to share a drink over a unique experience. Working on creating a painting by adding one simple layer at a time is a great, bite-size way in which to handle painting. The stages are basic and manageable, with details added gradually. The step-by-step approach means you may not realise just how much progress you are making! Before you know it, you will have a painting much like the example on display throughout the session, albeit with your own personality stamped on it. Participants are free to choose the colours they wish for their masterpiece, meaning you can let your inner hippie run free and go psychedelic, or keep things demure with muted colours. You can think about the painting as much, or as little as you wish. Just enjoy! Carrer de Roger de Flor, 135 www.artebar.es Alexandra Constantine

FUTURE GAMING AT THE VIRTUAL PLAYGROUND
Barcelona’s latest ‘virtual arcade’ consists entirely of virtual reality (VR) games. The building itself has a wide glass front that opens out onto the street so you can entertain passers-by as you grapple with the very latest in VR technology. There are four screens on the walls and four consoles with HTC Vive VR headsets and hand-held controllers attached to each of these. The games themselves vary in style of play and general theme, but all have the ability to totally immerse the player in an alternative reality. Once the comfortable visor is on and the simple controls of the hand remotes have been explained, it is shockingly easy to forget you are standing in a shopfront of the Gothic Quarter and instead believe you are battling the Empire’s forces in the Star Wars simulator Trial of Tatooine or rummaging through a wizard’s treasure trove in Waltz of the Wizard. Perhaps the most surreal experience of all is a game in which you must walk along a plank on top of a skyscraper, pick up an object – usually a cake, although there is also a spider option for the masochists who want to confront two 34
BARCELONA CONNECT
phobias in one go – and walk back along the plank trying not to topple off. For people who suffer from vertigo, this experience can be terrifying! Of course, if you do “fall” off the plank, nothing actually happens to you physically, but it requires a significant amount of rationalising to convince your own brain that you are not really 400 metres above a city. All the games are equally entertaining for those not participating as they can enjoy watching their friends evade invisible obstacles and lash out at unseen enemies. Everything the player can see through their visor can also be observed on the accompanying screen, so you can gain an insight into the worlds your friends have entered. But no screen can possibly prepare you for the captivating experience of VR which positively takes over all your senses. Carrer del Pi, 11 www.thevrplayground.com Charlie Bush

WOMEN: FICTIONS & REALITIES Exhibition
This investigation aims to draw attention a historical interference which is still present in the lives of women: the conflictive, awkward and complex relationship between the standard models of femininity spread by the popular media culture and actual reality. The exhibition offers a journey through some of the most iconic moments from the postwar period to the present, which provide evidence of the discomfort of women faced by the official narratives and elements used as propaganda to promote a reductionist model which restricted femininity and therefore also the freedom of women. THE SHOW
NIGHTLIFE While they are not strictly all nocturnal activities, spring time in Barcelona does create a very welcome grey area as far as music events go. Brunch in the City is a daytime affair that hosts the crème de la crème of international electronic music producers and local DJs and runs every other Sunday. But you only need to walk along the beach to discover an array of beach bars – or chiringuitos as they are known here. Discover cool bars right on the shoreline with sounds to fit your style all day long and into the night.

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down C/ Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by the locals.
