4 funky bars Raval is renowned for having the most unique, quirky little drinking hovels and we recommend you explore as many as possible. There are hardly any chain bars in this area, instead you'll find a surprise around every corner. Each bar has its own personality and charm, so whether you are after strawberry daiquiris and indie vibes at Foxy Bar (C/ de la Riera Alta 59), a cold beer at Zelig (C/ Carme 116), or a giant gin and tonic at Gipsy Lou (C/ Fernandia 55), you'll find it all here.

Terraces line the Rambla del Raval. The choice and variety is huge; Turkish, Indian, Italian and traditional restaurants. Coq D’Or, at number 51, is known by locals as “the 2 euro sandwich place”, and comes highly recommended. Sandwiches are freshly prepared in front of you, and just when you think they couldn’t possibly fit any more inside the baguette they ask if you would like chips too!

Style and Fashion: Passeig de Gràcia Paris has the Champs Élysées, Rome has Via Condotti, and Barcelona has Passeig de Gràcia. The smartest street in town stretches from Plaça Catalunya to Diagonal and is lined by tall trees, Gaudí’s architectural masterpieces La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, and intricate cast iron lamp posts. It’s the must-have address for any luxury designer; you’ll find Prada, Chanel, Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, and Donna Karan, as well as top jewelers Bagués Joieria, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

High street vogue: Diagonal with Rambla Catalunya This stretch of Avinguda Diagonal and the top corner of the Eixample Dreta is packed with fashionable shops. Look out for Italian trends from Subdued, who opened their first store in Spain this January at Rambla Catalunya 118. The elegant Maisons du Monde, Diagonal 405; and BoConcept, Diagonal 468 offer innovative interior design ideas.

Make sure you take a stroll down Carrer Rec which is back to back with fresh designs, and the lovely bar Borneo at one end and tasty snacks from the Arrepería at the other. The Born Cultural Centre hosted January’s 080 Barcelona Fashion Show, which raised the neighbourhood’s profile even higher. The big brands have noticed and are moving in – starting with Dolce & Gabbana and Custo. We wonder out loud what’s coming next…

Vintage Style in the Raval A couple of streets in this multicultural neighbourhood just off La Rambla have become synonymous with vintage trends: C/ Tallers and C/ Riera Baixa. You’ll find great deals in shops such as Lailo, Motel and De Faralaee.

Day Trip

vall de Núria The autumn colours of the Pyrenees are spectacular, and October is the perfect month to enjoy low-season tranquillity once the summer activities finish and before hordes of skiers arrive. Feel the anticipation of snow in a gust of chilly wind, listen as the cry of a hawk pierces the silence, and marvel that just two hours ago you were surrounded by the busy city of Barcelona.

discover vall de núria

a historic sanctuary

A high mountain valley. Vall de Núria is located at 2000m, in the municipality of Queralbs, a small village with a population of just 200 inhabitants in the province of Girona.

The earliest records of this sanctuary date back to Saint Giles in 700AD. He was a pilgrim who carved an icon of the Virgin Mary, which he hid when he fled Roman persecution. The first chapel was built here in 1072, and a shelter for shepherds was added in 1162. It has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, most recently in 1911.

Religion and fun. Crowned by mountain peaks that reach over 3000m, the valley is home to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Núria, which also includes an important ski resort and a hotel with excellent facilities for skiers, hikers and families. A room with a (political) view. Vall de Núria entered recent history when the First Statue of Autonomy for Catalunya was drafted here in 1931 ,in the hotel room 202. Making babies. The Virgin of Nuria is known as the patron saint of fertility, and many woman still make a special pilgrimage to receive her blessing in the sanctuary. Apparently it works.

22

hiking routes There are some spectacular trails to be enjoyed here! Mountain paths wind through the woods and beyond the treeline towards the high and rocky mountain peaks. Popular routes include Pic de l'Àliga (2476 m, 1hr15), Pic de la Fossa del Gegant (2801m, 3hrs) and Coma de Vaca (2.020 m, 1hr15). Download a map from valldenuria.cat.

The “Market of Markets” is one of the biggest annual gastronomic fairs, and is dedicated to showcasing the very best of contemporary Catalan cuisine. Each neighbourhood in Barcelona has its own food market and they are all represented here. The variety is impressive. Dairy produce includes local cheese and yoghurt. Stalls offer samples of different olive oils, with pieces of bread to dip into their “liquid gold.” Freshly cut fruit is sold, with or without a splash in the chocolate fountain. Cold cuts of salami, ham, and local sausage are available to try and buy. Other stalls use these fresh ingredients to make delicious tapas and other dishes. A large section of the fair is dedicated to cakes and sweets, with traditional favourites and elaborate creations. Local vineyard representatives explain the differences between their red, white and sparkling cava and wine whilst you have a swirl and a swill. You can buy tickets to try the different drinks and dishes, and many of the stands also offer cheeky nibbles and samples for you to enjoy.
