DAY TRIP
COLONIA GÜELL Gaudí’s architecture in Barcelona includes many of the city’s top sights. When the industrialist Eusebi Güell relocated his textiles factory to an industrial colony near Sant Boi in 1898 he asked Gaudí to build the “crypt”, or church. It’s an easy day trip from Barcelona and well worth visiting.
24
GAUDÍ'S CRYPT
INDUSTRIAL EVOLUTION
Güell's industrial colony was designed as a self sustaining socio-economic community, with everything that the workers were considered to need for a well balanced life. Gaudí developed extensive plans for a magnificent Modernist church, with his trademark non-linear columns and undulating arches. The congregation sit in a fan shape around the central altar which creates a real atmosphere of unity.
As the textile industry fell into decline, the Colonia Güell's operations were scaled down until it was finally closed in 1973. Workers were offered the first option to buy their houses, and local institutions and businesses bought up the rest of the land and factory spaces. In 1990 the Colonia Güell was declared a Property of Cultural Interest and Historical Ensemble and opened to the public shortly after.
Gaudí’s original project included two naves and a 40m high central dome. Funds dried up and in 1914 the project was left unfinished. However, the completed crypt is truly spectacular, with breathtaking stained glass windows, intricate ceramic mosaics reminiscent of those in Park Güell and an asymmetrical exterior whose details immediately confirm the same hand that conceived the Sagrada Família.
Keep an eye out for the Modernist constructions built by Gaudí's contemporaries, such as Ca L'Ordal, a traditional country house designed by Francesc Berenguer and Joan Rubió. If you’re in the area at lunchtime, El Ateneu restaurant does a great daily menu.

COMPAÑÍA NACIONAL DE DANZA PRESENTS
DON QUIXOTE S
ometimes a masterpiece is better known than its author. This has happened many times throughout the history of music; everyone knows the famous Sabre Dance and In a Persian Market, but few know Khachaturian or Ketelbey. The same is true for the Don Quixote ballet, with music by Ludwig Minkus and choreography by Marius Petipa. This Vienna-born composer spent his entire career as a ballet composer for the Russian imperial theatre, producing well-known work such as La Source and La Bayadera, yet he is still not as famous as other artists.
The ballet touches down at the Gran Teatre Liceu in Barcelona from the 14th-17th September, with La Compañía Nacional de Danza. It is directed and choreographed by José Carlos Martínez, and inspired by the versions of Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorski who reinterpret the work and create a new classic concept with contemporary touches.
This version was premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in 2015, where it received great acclaim by both critics and audiences. It arrives at the Liceu BALLET AT after having toured most of LICEU OPERA Spain.
Cervantes' Don Quixote has always been hugely popular BARCELONA in Russia, to the extent that The National Dance Company FROM Tsar Pedro I himself read it and was founded in 1979 and is the 14TH-17TH SEPT asked Minkus to compose a ballet most important dance company based on it. GOTHIC QUARTER Barcelona's Old Town The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
