In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your property

· · ·

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. You may wish to leave your passport or identity card in your hotel or apartment's safe, and carry a certified photocopy instead.

DAY TRIP

VALL DE NURIA

Vall de Núria is a high mountain valley located at 2000m, in the eastern area of the Pyrenees. Crowned by majestic mountain peaks that reach over 3000m, it is an idyllic location for outdoor activities and an ideal starting point for longer hikes into the mountains.

ACTIVITIES FOR ALL THE FAMILY

As the intense summer sunshine gives way to a softer autumn climate, Vall de Núria's activities become even more appealing. It's an ideal place to come with kids, as there is a huge variety of outdoor fun on offer. A play-park entertains the younger ones, and there is also a mini-golf area, and boating and canoes on the lake. There is a pony ride route especially designed for 2-8 year olds, which goes around the Sanctuary buildings. The farm area invites kids to encounter animals such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and Catalan donkeys. Horse riding is a good way to discover the landscapes of the valley, and routes are available for all levels. There is also an archery range inside the woods where you can test your focus and aim against silhouettes concealed among the trees. 26

A HISTORIC SANCTUARY

The earliest records of Vall de Núria Sanctuary date back to Saint Giles in 700AD. Giles was a pilgrim who carved an icon of the Virgin Mary, which he hid when he fled Roman persecution. The first chapel was built here in 1072, and a shelter for shepherds was added in 1162. It has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, most recently in 1911.

HIKING ROUTES

There are some spectacular trails to be enjoyed here. Mountain paths wind through the woods and beyond the treeline towards the high and rocky mountain peaks. Popular routes include Pic de l’Àliga (2476 m, 1hr15), Pic de la Fossa del Gegant (2801m, 3hrs) and Coma de Vaca (2.020m, 1hr15). Download a map from valldenuria.cat.

LA MERCÈ CATALONIA'S EXPLOSIVE TRADITIONS Just when you thought the summer was over, the party-loving city of Barcelona bites back with the big one! This spectacular street festival spills out from many stages and venues throughout the city, with over 600 activities and events including music, fireworks and traditional parades. It dates back to 1902 and was originally a religious occasion to commemorate the city’s Patron Saint, La Mare de Déu de la Mercè. Every folkloric element of local tradition is represented, from the towering castellers, or human castles that can reach up to nine storeys high, to epic correfocs, with dancing devils skipping through the streets brandishing twirling fireworks alongside fire-breathing dragons.

outfit Reyes Da República inaugurate the action at 21:00 in Plaça Joan Coromines, next to the MACBA. Another Friday highlight is the Hishik Bishik Show of independent theatre by Metro Al Madina, at 22:30 in Park de la Ciutadella. Eleven stage artists revivie the early 20th century colourful dances from the Arabic-influenced Middle East. They come from this year's invited city of Beirut, so look out for other Lebanese performances across the agenda. Another highlight looks set to be the rumba party at Bogatell beach from 23:00 with the popular Catalan band La Pegatina. One of the big name highlights this year is indie stars The Wedding Present at 23:15 on the Plaça dels Ángels stage on the 23rd. And if you're looking for something different, Montjuïc Castle hosts a program of circus and clown performances for all the family. Check out the full agenda at www.barcelona.cat/lamerce

BARCELONA'S FINEST BALLET & OPERA The Liceu Opera Barcelona is the city’s most prestigious opera house, and one of the most important venues in Europe. Its undisputed opulence and world-class acoustics create the perfect setting for touring international operas and national productions. This autumn we can look forward to two world-class performances, which are sure to be a highlight of your visit to Barcelona.

LES GRANS BALLETS CANADIENS 14TH-19TH SEPT

TURANDOT 7TH-25TH OCT

An enthralling performance of contemporary dance and ballet takes the audience on a suggestive journey from darkness to the light, from the lament of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater to the Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, defined by Wagner as the "apotheosis of dance ".

The Liceu Opera Barcelona celebrates the 20th anniversary of its renovations with the opera that re-inaugurated the venue on October 7, 1999. Turandot is Giacomo Puccini’s last opera, premiered in 1926 at La Scala in Milan. It is considered to be the last great Italian opera, a masterpiece that opened the way for the new music of the 20th Century.

This festive celebration of dancing bodies infused with spirituality was presented at the Place des Arts in Montreal to great public acclaim. Its intentionally refined and minimalist decorations and wardrobe allows the dancers to shine, accompanied by vocalists and orchestra, for a magical evening. Liceu Opera Barcelona La Rambla, 51-59 www.liceubarcelona.cat

Its signature aria Nessun Dorma was sung by the most famous tenor of all time, Luciano Pavarotti, reaching international recognition beyond the opera world. Even so, Turandot is more than just an aria. The choir plays a very prominent role, as does the rivalry of two sopranos, Princess Turandot and the slave Liú, with the emotion-stirring In questa reggia and Signore ascolta. 29

GARAGE 442 Our favourite place right now for getting down to the latest underground sounds before hitting the city’s clubs. Some pretty big names in the electronic music industry show up here quite regularly to showcase their sound - recent visiting artists include Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll and DJ Hell. Garage442’s music policy is varied, with something going on every night of the week, so it’s best to check the schedule ahead of your visit on their Instagram or Facebook pages. Highly recommended is its mid-week House Music Lovers night, or the monthly Planet Wonk parties - both hosted by Danny Mekanik (DJ at the infamous Golden nights in the UK). Also check out its monthly UK House & Garage nights hosted by Londonbased DJ Katty, and of course, events hosted by our very own nightlife guru, Mark J! His next one is on September the 6th featuring guest DJs Redness (Radio Nossa) and Paradisco residents Jonny Loves House and Simon Boulind playing back to back. A NIGHT OUT IN LA VILA DE GRÀCIA The nightlife team went into deepest Gràcia recently to discover some hidden gems and revisit some hotspots. From what we can remember on route, here’s what we found during a boozy night that ended up at this edition’s Top Pick venue! There are hundreds of bars in this district and the best way to discover them is simply by getting yourself lost. There are numerous squares (plaças) scattered around this neighbourhood, all a stone’s throw from each other, so immerse yourself, explore and find your own little secret hidey-holes of Gràcia. Tag a photo of your trip to our facebook. com/barcelonaconnect or instagram/ barcelonaconnect and let us know how you got on.

Vermuteria del Tano Gràcia is known for many things, especially its little vermut joints. Vermuteria del Tano is a good place to begin your education! Head to Joanic metro station, cross the road and head South West along Carrer de Bruniquer

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
