For the past 12 months I have worked as a receptionist in a hostel so I often take on the role of Barcelona’s welcoming committee and most sincere advocate. What makes my job hard is constantly having to console people who have lost all of their valuables in one fell swoop.
naïve. While walking from one platform to the next I felt a sudden sense of being followed. I spun around to find some total c-word opening my bag with his disgusting sticky fingers. I knew better than to have anything valuable on my back but it still angered me enough to teach him some new expletives in English and swing a few girly punches his way.
I do my best to drum the warnings in to people as much as I can but often by the time they get to me it’s already too late. On more than one occasion whilst checking someone in I have asked for their passport and have known even before they did that they no longer had anything to show me. As they rifled through their bag in confusion saying “I know it’s in here somewhere...” I was already drawing up a map of the nearest police station and pouring them a stiff drink.
You could argue that people who get hit by thieves are ignorant to the culture here but how hard is it to give them a little heads up?
To these people I find myself apologising on behalf of the city, as if my residency status somehow rationalises my sense of shame. In a way I think it does, and that’s why I’m taking the time to write this piece. Equipped with a backpack, I recently took the metro from Sants, the line with all the freshly landed tourists, excited and in some cases
Two days ago I was on the metro and heard a warning announcement about pick-pocketing. The pick-pocketing scumbags are smart enough to target the tourist heavy lines like the ones from the airport so why can´t we pump it through the PA system? While we´re at it, can we get some big old signage up at the train station at the airport? Something along the lines of “pickpockets are rampant here...no seriously guys, they really are.” It wouldn´t even be a blip on the radar to finance this. I don’t want people hating Barcelona, and going through the ordeal of having your passport stolen is enough to wipe every good memory you have of a city and replace it with frustration, anger and humiliation. Where do we go from here? Bec Robinson. Photos: Alain Rouiller
