INSIDE THE PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA

onsidered one of the most beautiful buildings in Barcelona, the Palau de la Música Catalana is also one of the city’s most important classical and contemporary music venues. It was built by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908 and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, thanks to its magnificent Modernist architecture. This imposing building has many rooms, each with its own unique ambience. Taking a tour is the best way to discover them all. The guided visit begins in the Rehearsal Hall of the Orfeó Català, the room where the first stone of the building was placed in 1905. The Orfeó Català is one of the most important choirs in Catalonia and has performed an extensive repertoire. A carefully constructed movie explains the history of the Palau and the artists and cultural representatives who contributed to its establishment.
An elegant and wide staircase leads to the Lluís Millet Hall, a fantastic room which has a balcony decorated with columns and flowers in homage to nature. Look out for the stone busts of important figures from the Palau’s history, such as Lluís Millet himself, the founder and first director of the Orfeó Català. The tour then enters the main Concert Hall, which is full of intricate statues and paintings that represent the artistic muses and many great Catalan and international musicians. The space is dominated by a colourful stained glass dome ceiling. Music from the massive organ gives an impressive show of the instrument’s acoustic power. Tour tickets are available online or at the box office. If you get the chance, check out their concert program and enjoy an evening’s entertainment in this unique venue. Lenny Khennouf

Casa Amatller Rethinking Modernist Architecture
I
n 1898, a rivalry was brewing. With the Modernist explosion taking over Barcelona, it was no longer enough for the bourgeoisie class to boast their status through glamorous clothes and fancy hats. Colourful, ostentatious, kaleidoscopic houses were the new trend in Barcelona, and Gaudí was not the only architect to oversee their construction.
a renovation that ensured the house is just as enchanting and impressive now as when it was lived in.
For a throwback in time to the luxurious lifestyle of Barcelona’s bourgeoisie, look no further than the guided tour of Casa Amatller. With intimate tours in English, Spanish and Catalan, a step inside the Casa Amatller time warp is Experience a throwback a genuinely breathtaking and thought provoking in time to the luxurious experience which certainly lifestyle of Barcelona's provides an interesting bourgeoisie contrast to Gaudí's work.
Directly next to Gaudí’s better known Casa Batlló is the charmingly undiscovered Casa Amatller. In 1898, Antoni Amatller, a wealthy industrialist chocolatier, bought the building for 490,000 pesetas. He commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch, a prominent architect whose work can be seen all over Barcelona, to convert the building into a flamboyant family home. Casa Amatller opened to the public as a house museum only 2 years ago, after more than 5 years and 4.9€ million were put towards

sketches. The tour follows a full circle of the house, from the grand dining room to the private quarters of Antoni and his daughter, Teresa. Every detail of the house museum has been beautifully preserved from the marble and stone statues on the walls to the original beds, clocks and even the dumb waiter. The only significant change to the house is the conversion of the downstairs kitchen to a genuine Amatller chocolate shop…hardly a disappointing end to the tour! Antoni and Teresa are equally responsible for the charm behind Casa Amatller. Both father and daughter were art enthusiasts and together acquired a collection of hundreds of significant pieces, particularly glasswork and both antique and contemporary Catalan paintings. In his will, Antoni requested that if Teresa did not provide an heir, that Casa Amatller would be converted into an Art Foundation to preserve
their collections. In 1942, Teresa oversaw the house’s conversion, which in turn has allowed much of Antoni and Teresa’s collections to be displayed in Casa Amatller today. The time, dedication and effort that have resulted in the incredible renovation of Casa Amatller contribute to the magic of the building, whose family and story clearly mean so much to all those who have worked behind it. The guided tour of Casa Amatller provides one of the most authentic experiences of modernist architecture you will find in Barcelona, as well as leaving you contentedly admiring the unsung heroes of the Passeig de Gràcia. W E E K E N D TRIP T R I P WEEKEND
AND RRA The smallest country in Europe is only a few hours from Barcelona. Its natural landscapes, culture and of course duty-free shopping are worth discovering with a weekend trip. It is also an internationally renowned ski destination which has excellent pistes and services. The season ski usually starts at the beginning of December and ends in mid-April, although this depends on snow conditions. GRANDVALIRA
NATURLĂ€NDIA
This is the largest and most legendary resort in Andorra, with spectacular landscapes and panoramic views. It has 110 pistes of all levels spread over 193km and plenty of good snowboarding runs. Grandvalira is an amalgamation of 6 resorts, including Pas de la Casa, Gran Roig and El Tarter, and a skipass for the whole area is available. www.grandvalira.com
Close to the Spanish border, this is the only cross country ski resort in Andorra, with 15km of tracks. It is ideal for children as it includes a multi-activity theme park with popular attractions such as Tobotronc and Airtrekk, which is the largest sky trail in Europe. A large choice of leisure activities includes snowmobiles, snowshoes, electric vehicles, pony rides, manual workshops for children, archery, mini golf and a 5,3km long toboggan ride.
VALLNORD The second largest ski area in Andorra is located in the northern valleys. You can enjoy 100km of slopes, as well as a wide variety of activities for non-skiers. There are two ski resorts in Vallnord: Pal Arinsal, and Ordino Arcalis. Both are connected by cable car and have hotels at the foot of the slopes. www.vallnord.com 24

CATALAN SEASONAL TRADITIONS CHRISTMAS MARKETS
CAGANER
The most important Christmas market is the Fira de Santa Llúcia, opposite Barcelona Catherdral, in the Gothic district. The square in front of La Sagrada Família also fills with festive stalls offering traditional Christmas figurines, nativity scenes and artisan gifts.
A key character in the Catalan nativity scene is the caganer, a small figure defecating discretely behind the crib of baby Jesus. These statues symbolise fertilisation and renewal. Children love finding the caganer in the larger nativity scenes that have dozens of characters, from shepherds and kings to villagers and angels.
CAGA TIÓ This Christmas log is a smiling hollowed out piece of wood with a red barretina hat. Children "feed" him every day from the 8th December and keep him warm with a blanket. On Christmas Eve the children beat him with a stick, singing songs that demand he poops presents... and candy, nuts and figs come pouring out! 28

STREET LIGHTS Once Barcelona's street decorations are switched on at the end of November there's no denying that Christmas is just around the corner. Look out for the pretty lights in small streets of the Gothic and Born districts, and the large wall of electrified colour along Gran Via.
FEATURES
TURRÓN: A TASTY TRADITIONAL TREAT
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Festive window displays beckon shoppers into their colourful decorated consumer wonderlands. Shops are normally closed on Sundays and public holidays in Catalonia, but during the month of December many will open on the 6th, 8th, 10th, 17th and 24th.
TURRÓN This traditional Christmas sweet is made with honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds or other nuts. Turrón de Jijona is a soft blend with ground almonds and oil, which makes it more sticky. Turrón de Alicante is a hard block made with whole almonds. There are many other modern variations with additional ingredients such as chocolate, puffed rice and candied fruits.

This is the culmination of Wagner’s artistic ethos, an opera which revolutionised tonal music with its harmonic ambiguity. Musically, the work conveys Arthur Schopenhauer’s nihilistic philosophy. GOTHIC QUARTER Barcelona's Old Town The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri.

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
