The annual “Mercat de Mercats” gastronomic fair takes place in front of Barcelona´s Gothic Cathedral, from the 18th-20th. Film fans might like to check out the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, with new contemporary national and international screenings from the 11th-20th. FANCY WATCHING A FILM IN ENGLISH?
Barcelona has several cinemas which regularly screen films in the original language. Look out for the initials V.O. (Version Original) to avoid hearing your favourite actors or actresses dubbed. The two Verdi cinemas in the Gràcia district show new releases, on C/Verdi 32, and C/ Torrijos 49. You´ll also find an extensive V.O. program at Icara Yelmo, near Port Olympic, on C/Salvador Espriu 61.
KIDS IN BARCELONA Chances are you´ve already discovered that Barcelona is a very junior-friendly city. There are plenty of parks scattered throughout the city, and climbing frames on several of the beaches. This international film festival focuses on the horror and fantasy genres. The most highly rated Catalan directors, producers and productions will be appearing alongside their international contemporaries in one of the defining industry events of the year. Screenings are also open to the general public, and if these are the kind of films that arouse your curiosity and interest then you’re strongly recommended to plan a special day trip to the nearby town of Sitges and catch a première. Who knows, you might even find yourself sitting next to a very special VIP! The festival opens on the 11th October with Catalan production Grand Piano, whose international cast is headed by Elijah Wood and John Cusack, and directed by Eugenio Mira. One of the highlights of the festival is the world première of the paranormal thriller Mindscape. A detective who can enter people´s memories (Mark Strong) takes on the case of a brilliant but troubled and dangerous 16-yearold girl, Anna (Taissa Farmiga), to determine whether she is a sociopath. The official selection includes fantasy themed feature length films of all nationalities, unreleased in Spain, and produced in 2012/13. Other categories include animation, short films, horror, Asian productions, and alternative screenings (DVD or Bluray) of the weirdest, most radical fantasy cult-movies. Expect the unexpected! INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
An treat for music fans; Barcelona’s Inedit Festival is a back to back showcase of documentary music films. The international selection is heavily dominated by U.S. releases, with only one European film in the program. The Sound of Belgium (Dir. Jozef Devillé, Belgium, 2012,) is a tribute to the nation that “works hard and parties harder,” and tells the story of a club owner who takes a trip through their dance music scene. In Mistaken for Strangers (Dir. Tom Berninger, US, 2013,) the protagonist tours with a band as a roadie, until getting sacked, and gains a real insight into the close relationship between success and disaster on the road. This year´s tributes feature Les Blank and Dick Fontaine.
This autumn Barcelona will again be hosting a generous agenda of inspiring and innovative contemporary jazz, and jazz spin-off concerts. If you’d like to enjoy a relaxing evening of live music in one of Barcelona’s most emblematic venues then book your tickets now! Highlights include Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Messengers presenting his new album Border Free at the Palau de la Música on the 30 Oct. The Tindersticks bring their eclectic indie-rock vibes to BARTS in Parallel on the 31st. Solo pianist Alfredo Rodríguez and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès unveil a special tribute to 20th century musical genius George Gershwin on the 23 November. LA CASTAÑADA... Or Halloween...?! The evening of the 31st October is traditionally a time for friends and families to get together and huddle around an open fire, to share roast chestnuts and “panellets,” seasonal sweets covered with pine kernels, and other local specialties. This is in preparation for the following day, All Saints Day, a public holiday when families visit the cemeteries of their deceased. However, Halloween is now firmly established here too, and you´ll find plenty costumed theme parties, especially in the Irish pubs and international bars. Various events

MPB: MUSICA POPULAR DE BARCELONA 10 Oct - 15 Nov
This festival presents live music at its best, with a carefully curated program that includes local, national and international talent. Cuban group Descember Bueno´s pop rock sounds inaugurate the festival on the 10th October. There´s an eagerly awaited performance by the Orquestra Illegal de Barcelona, street musicians who are used to being moved on by the authorities, at the Harlem Jazz Club on the 11th. Vicente Freir from Brazil plays short sets for just 7 people at a time at Bar Zim on the 17th October. Live music MERCAT DE MERCATS If you´re in Barcelona during this weekend, count yourself lucky. The “Market of Markets” is a delicious and delightful showcase of the very best of Barcelona´s contemporary gastronomy. Each district in the city has its own food market, and all 39 are represented here. You´ll find dairy stalls with local cheese and yoghurt. Some stalls offer samples of their different olive oils, with pieces of bread to dip into their “liquid gold.” Freshly cut fruit is sold, with or without a splash in the chocolate fountain. Cold cuts of salami, ham, and local products are available to sample and buy. Other stalls use these fresh ingredients in delicious tapas and other dishes which you can sample. A large section of the fair is dedicated to cakes and sweets, with traditional favourites and elaborate creations. Local vineyards are also present, and explain the differences between their red, white and sparkling “cava” wines. You can buy tickets which allow you to try the different drinks and dishes, and of course there are plenty of cheeky nibbles on many of the stands.

The world’s first and only multilingual comedy festival is already in full swing, with shockingly good international headliners and new talent. The Barcelona Final of the Funniest Ficer contest is on the 11th Oct, featuring the cream of local talent. Logan Murray gives an intensive 3 day comedy workshop, climaxing with the workshop show featuring its participants on Sunday 6th. And true master of uncompromising satirical comedy, Marcus Brigstoke closes the festival on Sat 19th. Plus more international shows and workshops.
Snatam Kaur was born into a California family where the sacred songs and chants of the Sikh and Kundalini Yoga tradition were part of her everyday lifestyle. She was drawn to music from an early age and studied in India. Over the last decade she has released 7 albums. Accompanied by accomplished musicians, this is more than just a concert, it is a powerful experience of the sacred sound current.

Local Talent Radar: The Mañaners The Mañaners play BARTS every Sunday Night, and City Hall Oct 17. Nightlife chats with Federico “Mono” De Gennaro at home.
The Mañaners are musicians from Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Mexico, and “own” every joint they play. Not only here in Spain, but also clubs and festivals in France, Germany, Andorra, Austria, Argentina (both live and on radio,) and Chile, selling a few thousand albums along the way. Barcelona is a natural choice for them, and Fede explains the move. “Music, bad economic situation in our countries, and for myself anyway, the will to travel. We love the multiculturalism of Barcelona and surroundings.” The group performs a live fusion of Latin American Soul and Funk

“I find the real lack of good deli sandwich spots and the fact that many shops and restaurants are closed during the afternoon siesta hours frustrating, but I adore everything about Barcelona,” he shares. “Since I first started coming here in the mid-90s, there’s been a considerable amount of hotel, restaurant and nightlife development. It´s light-years better than it used to be. I’m just upset that I spend so little time here due to my punishing tour schedule - which also makes it virtually impossible for me to learn Spanish,” admits the jet-lagged jock. A typical day in the city for Ali normally includes a coffee in the Born, where he recommends Café el Magnifico. For great food places, he stresses there are too many to mention, but he often tucks in at Xemei, Tickets, Pakta, Suculent, Paco Meralgo, Koy Shunka, Bar Mut, Bar Cañete, Dos Pallilos and Suquet de L’Almirall. “I rarely, if ever, get to a beach in the summer, but I head to Sitges for the day when I can get away,” he adds.

Right now as the 2013 European summer season draws near its close, Dubfire is relaxing at a villa hide-out on the white isle of Ibiza, where he admits getting stuck into the odd science fiction film or two during downtime. “I’m a science fiction junkie and I loved the latest Star Trek movie. There’s also a remix for Barem which should be out sometime soon, and I’m about to dive into an Asia Argento remix project. These new tours of Barcelona’s historic centre are the first of their kind in Spain. This is more than just another tour company; it is a social enterprise that employs homeless people and gives them an opportunity to start earning and regain their independence. Guides are trained by a local historian who prepared the guides for Barcelona’s Olympics. Hidden City was inspired by Unseen Tours in London, who pioneered the concept and started training homeless people as guides 3 years ago in London. They now run a few different tours in the capital, and the project is an absolute success. Similar initiatives have already been launched in Prague, Berlin and Bath. We spoke with Hidden City Tours’ founder, Lisa Grace, who is originally from the UK and has lived in Barcelona for 10 years. After being made redundant last year she was looking for new ideas, and came across an article about the Bath project. “I saw it and I thought that someone must be

doing this already in Barcelona. We’ve got a huge homeless problem here, and the second largest tourist sector in Europe.” When she realised that in fact nobody was doing it, she decided to put 2 and 2 together and to make it work. Barcelona has the highest rate of homelessness in Spain, with more than 3000 people living on the streets. The average age is 43, mostly male, and about half have children. About 40% are English speakers and 60% Spanish speakers. It used to be an even 50% split before the economic crisis. For many of Barcelona’s residents and visitors, especially those living in the city centre, homelessness is an aspect of urban reality that they are faced with every day. Lisa shares her experience: “I used to live in Escudellers in the Gothic, and there was the same homeless guy on my doorstep every day. He had a dog, and so did I, so we ended up getting to know each other. I got talking to plenty other homeless people during the 5 years I lived there and that really changed my perception.” Hidden City has followed the model of the Bath project, whose founder approached local charities. These charities proposed candidates who they felt this could work for, and then the training began. Building up trust was a very

Hidden City Tours will be presented at the International Responsible Tourism Conference ON the 2nd October, and tours are open to the public from the 11th. important first step, and the process took many meetings and countless coffees. The guides joined the project in July, and were taken on some tours to see if this was something they were interested in. Then the Hidden City team decided their route. Tours begin in the Gothic area, which is full of important landmarks. Groups will visit the Cathedral, Pl. del Rei, the Temple of Augustus, Pl. St Jaume (which is where the Roman forum used to be), the Jewish quarter, Pl. Felip Neri, and Pl. del Pi, before crossing the Rambla into the Raval. The tour then goes down Carrer St Pau, passing the beautiful Romanic church of Sant Pau del Camp. It winds up in Rambla Raval, goes through the Hospital Antic de Santa Creu, crosses its gardens, then on to the Boqueria, through to Palau Virreina, and up the Rambla.
In the Raval, the sights are more spaced out, which gives the guides an opportunity to comment on the social reality. If they only speak Spanish there is simultaneous translation during the tour. So far, the guides are excited and committed to the project. It’s an opportunity they hadn’t thought would come about, especially with the current economic climate. At first it was more of a social project; they had regular meetings with the team and training sessions with guides and historians. But now, October has come and it’s time for the new guides to start taking people around the streets that they know so well, and sharing their insights with the public. This looks set to be a new chapter in Barcelona’s tourism, so if you are able to book a place on the tour don’t miss it! DAY TRIP TARRAGONA Tarragona is perhaps best known for its previous incarnation as Tarraco, the Roman capital of the Iberian Peninsula. Many of its historic remains are exceptionally well preserved, which earned the city the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city was first captured by the Romans in 218 BC, who immediately set about constructing an infrastructure that included everything from an amphitheatre and aqueduct, to a forum with spaces for business and temples for worship, roads, and of course strongly fortified city walls to protect its perimeter. The walls themselves are considered to be the oldest remaining Roman structure outside Italy, and you can walk along some of these remains and catch some great views through the slits in the stone which were originally made for firing arrows. The most striking construction in the town of Tarragona is the Roman amphitheatre. This is situated right on the coast, with wonderful views over the Mediterranean from one side and the city on the other. Holding up to 14,000 spectators, it was used for traditional Roman

sports as well as violent public executions. Its structure is remarkably well preserved, and you can walk along the top and sit on the steps as the spectators would once have done. A stone’s throw from the amphitheatre are the remains of the Roman Circus, whose underground caverns can also be visited. Emerging from here you’ll find the National Museum of Archaeology, where fragments of larger structures such as columns, statues and busts from the forum and theatre, and other artefacts found in and around Tarragona are displayed. It also includes an impressive collection of mosaics, and items from everyday life such as ceramics and jewellery. There is a large room dedicated to mosaic floors, which include detailed geometrical patterns, intricate depictions of hunting scenes, and representations of myths and stories. A huge mosaic shows 47 different types of of Mediterranean marine fauna. These are generally fish, but various crustaceans, mammals and cephalopods and have been identified. Another large room is filled with statues of and bust of the political and religious leaders of the time. On the outskirts of town you’ll come across the Christian Necropolis, the main Roman burial grounds, which was used in the 4th and 5th century for Christian burial ceremonies. Ironically the burial grounds were discovered during the construction of a tobacco factory beneath which now lies the biggest known

Roman-Christian cemetery. The Pont Del Diable Aqueduct is a short bus ride out of the city, and is another extraordinary piece of Roman architecture. It is almost 250m long, 27m tall and it’s well worth seeing. Built around the first decade AD, it provided water to the city from rivers to the north. The fact that it is still completely intact is credit to the amazing architectural prowess of the Romans.

A special street!
Carrer d’Enric Granados is perfectly situated in central Barcelona, yet remains unknown to a many visitors to the city. The street is named after a wellrespected local pianist and composer, who gained much acclaim and enjoyed great success right up until his tragic death by drowning in 1916. I was lucky enough to move to the street around 2 years ago and this luck was only made evident to me when commenting on the move to friends. The words ‘favourite’ and ‘street’ cropped up again and again. Many Catalan friends were also visibly envious of my new address, as it is often described as one of the most sought after streets to live on in the city. Now I see why. It´s a special street. The way it begins just behind the University on Consell de Cent and only goes as far as Diagonal gives it a quiet exclusivity that many of the streets in Eixample lack. This is not so say that it is

overtly posh, rather it has a classical feel that suits the city’s relaxed ‘vida en la calle’ attitude; with a plethora of restaurants and bars of varying styles, it’s almost impossible not to enjoy a wander up and down this beautiful passageway. The quasi-pedestrian set up of the street and the fact there is only enough room for one lane of traffic means that walkers and cyclists can relax. It also allows the bars and restaurants to make the most of their terrace and gives the road a boulevard-esque quality. Taking a stroll up and down, it’s easy to see why so many Barcelona residents want to live here. It’s excellently positioned; 3 blocks from Passeig de Gràcia, and 10 minutes walk from Plaça Catalunya, which means you are always well connected to the most popular metro lines and have easy access to central Barcelona’s most exclusive shops. It is also extremely quiet and residential in its atmosphere. As with every part of the city, food and drink plays an enormous role in this neighbourhood. There is a fantastic, eclectic mix of new establishments offering a great variety of different foods to cater for all tastes, and some old hands that have been here for years and know their market extremely well, offering up some of the best in traditional dishes. Enric Granados is not just a street where you can have fantastic meals, it also offers visitors

the opportunity to sample incredible produce. All the way from a family wine producer (David Moreno), to incredible Argentinian meat (Deli Argentino) and great local bakeries too. All of these shops are reasonably priced and give the feel of shopping in your local neighbourhood rather than the tourist traps of the city centre. There are several independent design shops and art galleries where you can spend time just relaxing after lunch, and great outdoor spaces replete with areas for children to play in while their parents sit around on the benches and catch up with their friends or simply have a rest.

It is also a favourite with cyclists, offering a good route from the busy thoroughfare of Diagonal right down to the centre of the city and Plaça Universitat.
All in all though, the highlight of this picturesque promenade is merely being on it and taking it all in. A leisurely stroll from one end to the other is really the best way to understand and feel the great quality it possesses. I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s become a firm favourite of mine since I moved in, so much so that I want to promote its charms further and now collaborate on a blog dedicated to showing the charms and wonders that the street has to offer not just to residents, but the visitors of Barcelona as well.
